Many of the commonly used analytical techniques for assessing the properties of fluvial suspended particulate matter (SPM) are neither cost effective nor time efficient, making them prohibitive to long-term high-resolution monitoring. We present an in-depth methodology utilizing two types of spectroscopy which, when combined with automatic water samplers, can generate accurate, high-temporal resolution SPM geochemistry data, inexpensively and semi-destructively, directly from sediment covered filter papers. A combined X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy approach is developed to estimate concentrations for a range of elements (Al, Ca, Ce, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, P, Si, Ti) and compounds (organic carbon, Aldithionate, Aloxalate, Fedithionate, and Feoxalate) within SPM trapped on quartz fibre filters at masses as low as 3 mg. Calibration models with small prediction errors are derived, along with mass correction factor models to account for variations in retained SPM mass. Spectral pre-processing methods are shown to enhance the reproducibility of results for some compounds, and the importance of filter paper selection and homogeneous sample preparation in minimizing spectral interference is emphasized. The geochemical signal from sediment covered filter papers is demonstrated to be time stable enabling samples to be stored for several weeks prior to analysis. Example results obtained during a heavy precipitation event in October 2012 demonstrate the methodology presented here has considerable potential to be utilized for high-resolution monitoring of SPM geochemistry under a range of in-stream hydrological conditions. We selected 34 papers to focus on the mineral deposits, orogeny‐links, geochemistry, geochronology, and environments related to the Tianshan Orogen of the Silk Road. - Here, we show that several geochemical indicators point to number densities during chondrule formation that were far higher than can be accounted for by known nebula processes. The number densities implied by compound chondrules and nonspherical chondrules are shown to be significantly higher than estimated in previous studies. At the implied chondrule number densities, if a chondrule formation region survived a formation event it would have been gravitationally bound and would have collapsed quite rapidly to form an asteroidal-sized body. The diversity of chondrule compositions and textures in a chondrite group could have formed in a single event in subvolumes of a formation region that were chemically isolated from one another because of slow diffusion in the gas. Within these subvolumes, equilibration between chondrules with different compositions would have been fairly rapid, although small isotopic mass fractionations in elements like Fe, Si, Mg, and O may persist. This could explain the existence of the small isotopic mass fractionations in these elements that have been observed in chondrules. However, the evidence for recycling of chondrules requires that there was more than one chondrule formation event prior to formation of a parent asteroid. Finally, we argue that OC and CO chondrule Mg-Al systematics are both consistent with single ages or narrow ranges of ages, and that the CO, and possibly the OC, ages date parent body alteration. This would resolve the conundrum of needing to preserve in a turbulent nebula physically and chemically distinct CO and OC chondrule populations for 1-2 Myr. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Cretaceous High Arctic Large Igneous Province (HALIP) in Canada involved extrusion of continental flood basalts (CFBs) at 130-120 Ma and 100-95 Ma and emplacement of an extensive sill and dike network that intersected the Carboniferous to Paleogene Sverdrup Basin. In this paper, we present new 40Ar/39Ar ages, major and trace elements, and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope ratios for HALIP lava, dikes, and sills from Bukken Fiord, NW Axel Heiberg Island, Canadian Arctic Islands. Our best constrained 40Ar/39Ar ages yield a weighted average of 124.1 ± 1 (2σ) Ma, coincident with the first pulse of tholeiitic CFB magmatism in the Arctic-wide HALIP as exemplified by Isachsen Formation flood basalts on Axel Heiberg Island. The Bukken Fiord samples are plagioclase and clinopyroxene-phyric tholeiitic basalts, are relatively evolved (3.2-6.5 wt% MgO), and share similar major and trace element compositions to typical HALIP tholeiites. Initial 143Nd/144Nd ranges from 0.51260 to 0.51291 and initial 87Sr/86Sr ranges from 0.70362 to 0.70776, while measured 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb range from 18.614 to 19.199, 15.534 to 15.630, and 38.404 to 39.054, respectively. The most primitive sample in this study has Sr-Nd-Pb isotope signatures that suggest an enriched plume-derived mantle source for HALIP tholeiites. Most samples, however, possess relatively radiogenic isotope signatures that can be explained by moderate degrees of assimilation of Sverdrup Basin sedimentary rocks. Magma-crust interaction in the HALIP plumbing system was likely widespread and may have increased the environmental impact of the HALIP, particularly if crustal carbon was volatilized. Iron reduction and sulfate reduction often occur simultaneously in anoxic systems, and where that is the case, the molar ratio between the reactions (i.e., Fe/SO42− reduced) influences their impact on water quality and carbon storage. Previous research has shown that pH and the supply of electron donors and acceptors affect that ratio, but it is unclear how their influences compare and affect one another. This study examines impacts of pH and the supply of acetate, sulfate, and goethite on the ratio of iron to sulfate reduction in semi‐continuous sediment bioreactors. We examined which parameter had the greatest impact on that ratio and whether the parameter influences depended on the state of each other. Results show that pH had a greater influence than acetate supply on the ratio of iron to sulfate reduction, and that the impact of acetate supply on the ratio depended on pH. In acidic reactors (pH 6.0 media), the ratio of iron to sulfate reduction decreased from 3:1 to 2:1 as acetate supply increased (0–1 mM). In alkaline reactors (pH 7.5 media), iron and sulfate were reduced in equal proportions, regardless of acetate supply. Secondly, a comparison of experiments with and without sulfate shows that the extent of iron reduction was greater if sulfate reduction was occurring and that the effect was larger in alkaline reactors than acidic reactors. Thus, the influence of sulfate supply on iron reduction extent also depended on pH and suggests that iron reduction grows more dependent on sulfate reduction as pH increases. Our results compare well to trends in groundwater geochemistry and provide further evidence that pH is a major control on iron and sulfate reduction in systems with crystalline (oxyhydr)oxides. pH not only affects the ratio between the reactions but also the influences of other parameters on that ratio. Archaeological studies carried out in recent decades have demonstrated that the Pre‐Pyrenees, a mountain range in north‐east Iberia, were regularly frequented by several human groups during the Late Pleistocene. The Cova del Parco archaeological site is an example of this large‐scale and regular human presence. The site was discovered and first excavated in the 1970s, and since the 1980s, a team from the University of Barcelona has been conducting archaeological work. So far, we have found that the site was at least frequented from the Middle Magdalenian upon historical times. In this paper, we present the results of the archaeopetrological, geochemical and geographic information system (GIS) analyses of chert tools ascribed to the Middle Magdalenian sequence. The textural, micropalaeontological and geochemical analysis of the lithic artefacts has allowed us to identify several chert types from local, regional and long‐distance sources. Some of these cherts had their origin in the northern slopes of the Pyrenean chain, suggesting that this mountain chain was regularly crossed by Magdalenian groups. Next, we performed GIS analyses to determine the paths and connections that may have linked the archaeological site with the different chert outcrops, and to identify the best routes for crossing the Pyrenean Mountain range. Moreover, this study provides a larger vision of the mobility and the complex economic interactions between the different Magdalenian groups that settled Cova del Parco at the end of the Late Pleistocene. The Neotethyan Sanandaj–Sirjan Zone of western Iran has recorded major magmatic activities due to its continental arc tectonic setting during the Mesozoic. The Varcheh mafic intrusions were less‐studied plutons in the northern Sanandaj–Sirjan Zone (SSZ). Field evidence, petrography, geochemistry and U–Pb geochronological data were used to determine petrographic composition, geochemical nature, crystallization age and also to suggest a conceptual tectonomagmatic model for their emplacement. Small plutonic bodies are dominantly composed of monzogabbro that have intruded into the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. Based on U–Pb zircon datings, these rocks have crystallized at 125–118 Ma in late Early Cretaceous (Barremian–Aptian), and are older than the supposed ages reported on geological maps. Varcheh rocks are not just typical calc‐alkaline rocks and some show alkaline affinity. Negative anomalies in Nb–Ta–Ti and enrichments in some large‐ion lithophile elements on spider diagrams are consistent with a subduction‐zone setting. Potential deep source for magma generation is partial melting of subcontinental lithospheric mantle wedge above a subducting slab of oceanic lithosphere. The spaces for the Varcheh mafic intrusions are accommodated by dominant dextral strike‐slip movement in a continental arc experiencing extension during late Early Cretaceous subduction. According to the zircon U–Pb geochronology results in this paper and previous U–Pb ages in the northern part of the SSZ, the mid‐Cretaceous magmatism reveals a significant NW‐ward younging trend and migration of the magmatic arc from the Barremian–Aptian in south‐east to the Albian–Cenomanian in the north‐west. The present paper addresses petrography, geochemistry and Ar‐Ar geochronology of a significant number of mafic dykes from the Paleo‐ to Neoarchean Bundelkhand Craton in central India. The majority of the dykes are NW‐SE oriented (with a few NE‐SW and ENE‐WSW) with tholeiitic, sub‐alkaline and basalt to basaltic andesite composition. The trace element geochemistry of these dykes indicates an island arc setting during emplacement. The Ar‐Ar mineral dating (plagioclase) of three representative dykes reveals an emplacement age between 1.53 and 1.46 Ga. This finding and earlier reports (2.1–1.73 Ga) point to sustained mafic magmatism throughout the Bundelkhand Craton in a preferred structural orientation between 2.1 and 1.46 Ga. Mafic magmatism was episodic and can be linked to the perpetual subduction accretion processes between the central Indian Archean continents during the development of the Columbia supercontinent. The mafic dykes were emplaced at 45° to the maximum compression direction (E‐W), that is, along the line of no finite longitudinal strain. This time equivalent widespread NW‐SE and NE‐SW trending mafic dyke system is also relatable along the adjacent continents (Singhbhum, Bastar) and thus opened up a new paradigm for the dyke's emplacement across the Indian cratons. The exploration and analyses of chemical components in (extra‐)terrestrial geological materials (such as asteroids and meteorites) are insightful in modern research. Laser‐induced breakdown spectroscopy (LiBS) is a popular method for analyzing the chemical attributes of geologic samples—which scientists use to study and understand planetary bodies and their complex histories. In the literature, several machine learning models that produce high‐accuracy predictions have been proposed. In our work, we compared the performances of such models in predicting elemental abundances on a certain spectroscopic dataset. Models included partial least squares (PLS), extreme gradient boost machines (XGB), neural networks, and linear models. In our results, we showed how PLS and XGB are superior in terms of high predictive power, their ability to generalize, and their reasonably efficient runtimes. In addition, we proposed Ensemble models that aggregate predictions of top‐tier models and observed that they can be desirable. We intend to gain better understanding of how these models perform in predicting elemental compositions on specific spectrum (LIBS) datasets. In this paper, we compare several machine learning models to identify those who performed best in a specific spectroscopic datasets. The models investigated include partial least squares, Lasso regression, support vector regression, artificial and convolutional neural networks, and extreme gradient boosting machines. There are several different models for the origin of syenites, but the role of magma mixing in the formation of syenites remains unclear. The Wulingshan alkaline complex in the northern North China Craton consists mainly of porphyritic syenite and syenite with abundant enclaves. These enclaves may provide new insights into the petrogenesis of syenites. We obtained zircon U–Pb age, mineral chemistry, whole‐rock major and trace elements, and Sr–Nd isotopic data for the enclaves and their host rocks to constrain the petrogenesis and identify the role of magma mixing during the formation of the different syenites in the Wulingshan alkaline complex. The results of zircon U–Pb dating indicate that the enclaves and host rocks crystallized contemporaneously at ca. 133 Ma. The enclaves contain abundant clinopyroxene, amphibole, and biotite, and their average Nb/Ta (18.46) and Th/Ce (0.04) ratios are similar to those of the mantle. The enclaves have relatively high Fe2O3T, MgO, and CaO contents, and their SiO2 contents are equivalent to those of intermediate rocks, indicating that they formed by mixing the mafic and felsic magmas to some extent. The different mineral assemblages, major and trace elements and isotopic compositions of the enclaves in the porphyritic syenite and syenite indicate that they are two batches of parental magma with different properties derived from the mantle. The porphyritic syenite and syenite have high SiO2 and low Fe2O3T, MgO, and CaO contents, as well as low V, Cr, Co, and Ni contents. These major and trace element characteristics of the host rocks require the involvement of crustal components. The Sr–Nd isotopic compositions of the enclaves and the host syenitoids plot on a mixing curve between enriched lithospheric mantle and lower crust, indicating that these rocks are the products of magma mixing and crust–mantle interaction. Considering the contact relationships, the geochemistry data, and the mixing model presented in the paper, we propose that the upwelling of the hot asthenosphere heated the overlying enriched lithospheric mantle and triggered low‐degree partial melting. The alkalic mafic magmas derived from enriched mantle sources were mixed with felsic magmas generated by partial melting of the lower (or upper) crust to form the different syenites. Industrial‐scale metal mining has long been a feature of developing economies. Processing ores to recover minerals has generated large quantities of waste rock, tailings and contaminants. Mining‐related deposits, along with associated soil and water geochemistry, river modifications and other environmental changes, are a product of the nature, scale and intensity of past operations. These artefacts of historical mining create anthropogenic landscapes that extend far beyond individual sites due to the dispersal of mine waste by rivers and pose enduring threats to human and ecosystem health. Their presence and significance, however, are often overlooked by heritage and environmental managers. To be acknowledged as artefacts of the historical mining industry, landscape features must be identified and characterised with reference to the human activities that triggered their formation. This requires an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates anthropogenic landscape change at a regional scale. In this paper, we integrate archaeological, geomorphological and geochemical evidence to identify and analyse mining‐related changes to the Loddon River valley in Victoria, Australia. Nineteenth‐century gold mining caused extensive erosion of creeks and gullies and mobilised sediments that filled channels and spread over floodplains. In addition, tailing deposits concentrated arsenic at levels significantly above environmental background conditions. Recognising these legacies of historical mining is vital to understanding mining heritage and to managing healthy rivers, environments and communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the results of a multiproxy approach to the ancillary activities which supported the ancient Maya royal court of the center of La Corona (750–900 CE). This approach sampled both the plaster floors and their overlaying soil matrix from areas of the palace of La Corona, resulting in a data set comprised of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry geochemical, soil‐flotation derived microartifactual, and macrobotanical data. These data complemented the architectural and artifactual record, documenting elusive aspects of the economic, ancillary functions of the Northwest Group of the La Corona regal palace. Specifically, this approach revealed that distinct portions of this architectural group were regularly used for preparing foods and craft objects, carrying products and items, discarding ash, using and/or grinding cinnabar‐based pigments, and illuminating nighttime activities. These results not only revealed activity areas in patios, but also provided evidence regarding the functions of adjacent buildings. This paper significantly contributes to our understanding of the pragmatic economic functions of ancient Maya royal courts. It is tempting in material sourcing analyses to treat chemical data primarily as numbers to be sorted, while disregarding their interlinked geochemistries. Consideration of geochemistry, however, often leads to the drawing of more nuanced and reliable conclusions. In this paper we re‐examine data published in 2020, related to the sourcing of stone #58 at Stonehenge, paying attention to geochemistry. Manganese has been observed on Mars by the NASA Curiosity rover in a variety of contexts and is an important indicator of redox processes in hydrologic systems on Earth. Within the Murray formation, an ancient primarily fine‐grained lacustrine sedimentary deposit in Gale crater, Mars, have observed up to 45× enrichment in manganese and up to 1.5× enrichment in iron within coarser grained bedrock targets compared to the mean Murray sediment composition. This enrichment in manganese coincides with the transition between two stratigraphic units within the Murray: Sutton Island, interpreted as a lake margin environment, and Blunts Point, interpreted as a lake environment. On Earth, lacustrine environments are common locations of manganese precipitation due to highly oxidizing conditions in the lakes. Here, we explore three mechanisms for ferromanganese oxide precipitation at this location: authigenic precipitation from lake water along a lake shore, authigenic precipitation from reduced groundwater discharging through porous sands along a lake shore, and early diagenetic precipitation from groundwater through porous sands. All three scenarios require highly oxidizing conditions and we discuss oxidants that may be responsible for the oxidation and precipitation of manganese oxides. This work has important implications for the habitability of Mars to microbes that could have used Mn redox reactions, owing to its multiple redox states, as an energy source for metabolism. Plain Language Summary: In May 2017, the NASA Curiosity rover observed higher than usual amounts of manganese in the lakebed rocks within Gale crater, Mars. These sedimentary rocks have larger grain sizes than what is typical for the lakebed rocks in Gale crater. This may indicate that the original sediments were formed in a river, delta, or near the shoreline in the ancient lake. In this paper, we discuss how manganese could have been enriched in these rocks—for example, by percolation of groundwater through the original sediments or through the rock afterward—and what oxidant could be responsible for the precipitation of manganese in the rocks. On Earth, manganese becomes enriched because of oxygen in the atmosphere and this process is often sped up by the presence of microbes. Microbes on Earth can use the many oxidation states of manganese as energy for metabolism; if life was present on ancient Mars, the increased amounts of manganese in these rocks along the lake shore would be a helpful energy source for life. The establishment, development and abandonment and/or destruction of ancient civilizations were catalytically controlled by geomorphic features such as lakes and rivers and the climate. This paper examined the possible influence of tectonism and climate on six habitations of the ancient Vaigai River Basin civilization in South India, using multiple proxies such as grain size, geochronology and geochemistry of the sedimentary archives. The tectonic setting of the basin changed between the active margin and passive margin; the discriminant diagrams suggested varying provenance and changing climatic conditions over the mid‐ and‐late Holocene. Tectonic activism and quiescence, base‐level change in the channel morphology led to the burial/marooning of the first habitation surface. Overall, arid conditions were punctuated with catastrophic flooding and peak discharge (flood) destroyed the second, third and fourth habitation sites. These flooding events were characterized by moderate weathering (CIA) and high values of Al, Fe and Rb/Sr and low Ca/Mg in the sediment records. The abandonment/destruction of the fifth habitation also occurred during an arid interval (droughts), possibly caused by weak monsoon. Along with the interactions between tectono‐climatic and fluvial geomorphic factors, the new results provided avenues to (a) check and recognize the archives for 8.2 and 4.2 ka‐like events in this part of the world, and (b) the utility of integrated analyses to constrain on the civilizational histories of the mankind. The North Qinling Orogenic Belt (NQB) records the pivotal geological information for understanding the Palaeozoic evolution of the Qinling Orogenic Belt (QOB). Previous studies mainly focused on the subduction–collision process along the Shangdan suture zone before the Early Devonian. However, as the significant interim period between the Early Palaeozoic and Mesozoic orogeny, the Late Palaeozoic tectonic evolution of the NQB remains poorly understood. Fortunately, the Carboniferous magmatic rocks discovered this time provide substantial geological evidence for revealing the Late Palaeozoic tectonic history of the Qinling Orogenic Belt. This paper will provide a detailed analysis of zircon U–Pb ages, geochemical characteristics and Sr‐Nd‐Hf isotopic compositions of Carboniferous rocks. The Carboniferous magmatic rocks are categorized as highly differentiated S‐type granite and monzodiorite, formed at 350 ± 2.4 Ma and 353 ± 5.2 Ma, respectively. The granite shows weak peraluminous (A/CNK = 1.02–1.11) and shoshonite nature. Based on the isotopic composition and trace element characteristics, we propose that the Qinling Group paragneiss is the primary source of the Carboniferous granite. Monzodiorite is characterized by enriched LREEs and LILEs (Ba, K and Pb), depleted HFSEs (Th, Nb, Ta and Ti) and enriched Sr‐Nd isotopic composition. Monzodiorite magma source region consists of continental crustal material and lithospheric metasomatized mantle. Carboniferous magmatic rocks are the product of an extensional tectonic setting, which indicates the NQB tectonic regimes transition from compression to extension during the Carboniferous. Post‐collisional magmatism contains important clues for understanding the reworking and growth of continental crust, as well as lithospheric delamination and orogenic collapse. Early Devonian magmatism has been identified in the North Qilian Orogenic Belt (NQOB). This paper reports an integrated study of petrology, whole‐rock geochemistry, Sm‐Nd isotope and zircon U‐Pb dating, as well as Lu‐Hf isotopic data, for two Early Devonian intrusive plutons. The Yongchang and Chijin granites yield zircon U‐Pb ages of 394–407 Ma and 414 Ma, respectively. Both of them are characterized by weakly peraluminous to metaluminous without typical aluminium‐rich minerals, LREE‐enriched patterns with negative Eu anomalies and a negative correlation between P2O5 and SiO2 contents, consistent with geochemical features of I‐type granitoids. Zircons from the studied granites display negative to weak positive εHf(t) values (–5.7 to 2.1), which agree well with those of negative εNd(t) values (−6.4 to −2.9) for the whole‐rock samples, indicating that they were derived from the partial melting of Mesoproterozoic crust. Furthermore, low Sr/Y ratios (1.13–21.28) and high zircon saturation temperatures (745°C to 839°C, with the majority being >800°C) demonstrated a relatively shallow depth level below the garnet stability field and an additional heat source. Taken together, the Early Devonian granitic magmatism could have been produced by the partial melting of ancient crustal materials heated by mantle‐derived magmas at high‐temperature and low‐pressure conditions during post‐collisional extensional collapse. The data obtained in this study, when viewed in conjunction with previous studies, provides more information about the tectonic processes that followed the closure of the North Qilian Ocean. The tectonic transition from continental collision to post‐collisional delamination could be constrained to ∼430 Ma, which is provided by the sudden decrease of Sr/Y and La/Yb ratios and an increase in zircon εHf(t) values for granitoids. A two‐stage tectonic evolution model from continental collision to post‐collisional extensional collapse for the NQOB includes (a) continental collision and crustal thickening during ca. 455–430 Ma, characterized by granulite‐facies metamorphism and widespread low‐Mg adakitic magmatism; (b) post‐collisional delamination of thickened continental crust and extensional collapse of orogen during ca. 430–390 Ma, provided by coeval high‐Mg adakitic magmatism, A‐type granites and I‐type granitoids with low Sr‐Y ratios. Wildfires affect 40% of the earth's terrestrial biome, but much of our knowledge of wildfire activity is limited to the satellite era. Improved understanding of past fires is necessary to better forecast how fire regimes might change with future climate change, to understand ecosystem resilience to fire, and to improve data-model comparisons. Environmental proxy archives can extend our knowledge of past fire activity. Speleothems, naturally occurring cave formations, are widely used in paleoenvironmental research as they are absolutely dateable, occur on every ice-free continent, and include multiple proxies. Recently, speleothems have been shown to record past fire events (Argiriadis et al., 2019, https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.analchem.9b00767; McDonough et al., 2022, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gca.2022.03.020; Homann et al., 2022, https://doi. org/10.1038/s41467-022-34950-x). Here we present a review of this emerging application in speleothem paleoenvironmental science. We give a concise overview of fire regimes and common paleofire proxies, describe past attempts to use stalagmites to investigate paleofire, and describe the physical basis through which speleothems can record past fires. We then describe the ideal speleothem sample for paleofire research and offer a summary of applicable laboratory and statistical methods. Finally, we present four case studies from southwest Australia which: (a) explore the geochemistry of ash leachates, (b) detail how sulfate isotopes may be a proxy for post fire ecological recovery, (c) demonstrate how a catastrophic paleofire was linked to changes in climate and land management, and (d) investigate whether deep caves can record past fire events. We conclude the paper by outlining future research directions for paleofire applications. Wildfires are a global hazard, and are likely to become larger, more common, and more intense with climate change. Most of our knowledge about wildfires comes from satellite data, which are not long enough to fully understand past fire behavior. We can use paleoenvironmental data to learn more. Natural cave decorations (speleothems) have recently been found to include information about fire events. As they grow, stalagmite chemistry changes according to the climate and environment, and recent research has shown that elements from wildfire ash can become incorporated into the speleothem archive. Here we review recent advances of this new application in paleofire research. We detail the development of this emerging field, starting with cave dripwater monitoring results, we then give an overview of relevant laboratory and statistical methods, and provide four case studies. The case studies are an investigation of ash geochemistry, an analysis of post-fire changes in sulfate, a study of how intense fires are linked to climate, and an exploration of whether deep cave stalagmites may also record past fires. Longer records of fire activity will help to improve models for forecasting how fire regimes might change with climate change and how ecosystems might respond to those changes. Cave carbonates, seemingly growing in defiance of gravity, have attracted the community's interest for more than a century. This paper focusses on 'helictites', contorted vermiform speleothems with central capillaries. Petrographic, crystallographic and geochemical data of calcitic and aragonitic helictites (recent to 347 ka) from three caves in Western Germany are placed in context with previous work. Aragonitic helictites from one site, the Windloch Cave, form exceptionally large and complex structures that share similarities with the celebrated helictite arrays in the Asperge Cave in France. Aragonitic and calcitic helictites differ significantly in their crystal fabrics and internal geometry. Calcitic helictites are best described as a composite crystal fabric consisting of fibrous mesocrystals. Aragonite helictites display a complex fabric of acicular to platy crystals, some of which show evidence for growth‐twinning and perhaps crystallisation via a monoclinal precursor stage. The micro‐tomographic characterisation of several orders of channels and their complex architecture raises important questions regarding fluid migration and helictite architecture. In terms of their isotope geochemistry, helictites are depleted in 13C to various degrees, isotope values that are controlled by the mixing of fluids and mineralogy‐related fractionation. Regarding their δ18O values, most helictites overlap with other calcitic and aragonitic speleothems. Previous models explaining the twisted morphology of helictites are discussed from the viewpoint of fluid migration and CO2 degassing rates, mineralogy and helictite petrography. For the complex aragonitic helicities documented here, the most likely mechanisms to explain the contorted growth forms include the internal capillary network combined with localised (sector) growth at the helictite tip. The morphologically simpler calcitic helictites are best explained by capillary and surface flow. Future work should include geomicrobiology to assess the significance of induced mineralisation and transmission electron microscopy analysis to more quantitatively assign crystallographic properties. The Zhaojinggou Nb–Ta deposit is one of large rare metal deposits newly discovered in the northern margin of the North China Craton in recent years. This paper reports petrography, petrochemistry, columbite‐group minerals U–Pb chronology study of the amazonite granitic pegmatite (AGP) exposed in this deposit, and composition of columbite‐group minerals and biotite are obtained by electron probe microanalyzer and LA‐ICP‐MS. Eighteen analyses of columbite‐group minerals yielded weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 116.9 ± 1.4 Ma. The crystallization temperature of biotite is 630–650°C, and the oxygen fugacity is 10−17–10−18 bars. The biotite has low MgO contents and high Rb, Rb/Sr, and FeOT/(FeOT + MgO) ratios. The AGP has extremely low MgO, Cr, Co and Ni contents, with Nb/Ta ratios range from 1.63 to 9.05 and Rb/Sr ratios range from 303.30 to 648.90, and obvious 'M' type tetrad effect of rare earth element indicating that the formation of the AGP is related to crust‐derived magma. The contents of Nb2O5 and FeO decrease, while the Ta2O5 and WO3 contents, Mn# and Ta# values increase gradually from the core to the rim of columbite‐group minerals. Some columbite‐group minerals have unobvious oscillatory zoning, and some have a clear bright zoing with high Ta contents on the rim, indicating that the genesis of Zhaojinggou Nb–Ta deposit is mainly magmatic crystallization differentiation, accompanied by hydrothermal autometasomatism in the late stage. Continental flood basalts intruded and erupted millions of km3 of magma over ∼1–5 Ma. Previous work proposed the presence of large (>105 $ > {\mathrm{10}}^{5}$–106 km3) crustal magma reservoirs to feed these eruptions. However, in Paper I, we illustrated that this model is inconsistent with observations, by combining eruptive rate constraints with geochemical and geophysical observations from the Deccan Traps and other Continental flood basalt provinces (CFBs). Here, we use a new mechanical magma reservoir model to calculate the variation of eruptive fluxes (km3/year) and volumes for different magmatic architectures. We find that a single magma reservoir cannot explain the eruptive rate and duration constraints for CFBs. Using a 1D thermal model and characteristic timescales for magma reservoirs, we conclude that CFB eruptions were likely fed by a number of interconnected small‐medium (∼102–103 km3) magma reservoirs. It is unlikely that each individual magma reservoir participated in every eruption, thus permitting the occasional formation of large xenocrysts (e.g., megacrystic plagioclase). This magmatic architecture permits (a) large volume eruptive episodes with 10–100s of years duration, and (b) relatively short time‐periods separating eruptive episodes (1000s of years) since multiple mechanisms can trigger eruptions (via magma recharge or volatile exsolution, as opposed to long term (105–106 year) accumulation of buoyancy overpressure), and (c) lack of large upper‐crustal intrusive bodies in various geophysical datasets. Our new proposed magmatic architecture has significant implications for the tempo of CFB volatile release (CO2 and SO2), potentially helping explain the pre‐K‐Pg warming associated with Deccan Traps. Plain Language Summary: Continental flood basalts represent some of the largest volcanic events in Earth's history with a significant impact on the terrestrial environment. However, the nature of the magmatic system associated with the eruption of millions of cubic km of basaltic lavas remains an open question. In this study, we developed a set of new mechanical and thermal models to analyze what sized magma chambers can feed the CFB lavas and what is the dominant physical process leading to eruptions. We find that flood basalt lavas were most likely erupted from a set of interconnected medium (∼102–103 km3) sized magma chambers. In addition, eruptions were most likely initiated by magma recharge instead of magma buoyancy associated overpressure. Using these results, we develop a new conceptual model for continental flood basalt volcanism and show that it can help explain the key observational characteristics. Our results also have implications for the CO2 flux from flood basalts and the consequent environmental impact. Shortly thereafter, in the wake of the "plate tectonics revolution" and working with Alan White, Ross noted the striking similarity between the average composition of the continental crust and andesite - one of the most diagnostic igneous rock types formed in subduction zones (Taylor & White, 1965). Stuart Ross Taylor, always known by his middle name Ross, was born in Ashburton, New Zealand, on November 26, 1925, and died peacefully in Canberra, Australia, on May 23, 2021, at the age of 95, surrounded by his wonderful and loving family. Hydrocarbon reserves of the order of 1140 MM brl oe have been identified in the northern foreland of the eastern Greater Caucasus, principally in the Terek‐Caspian fold‐and‐thrust belt and the Prikumsk Swell in the north of the Terek‐Caspian foredeep. Despite the great economic significance of these areas and their long exploration history, the origin of the hydrocarbons is still poorly understood. In the present paper, geochemical data from 73 oil samples representing 28 fields are used to investigate the presence of oil families and to correlate the oils with potential source rocks. Biomarker composition of oils in Cretaceous and Miocene reservoirs in the Terek‐Caspian fold‐and‐thrust belt is mainly controlled by reservoir depth (100‐5700 m) and maturity (0.70‐1.15 %Ro), and it is therefore difficult to separate maturity and facies effects. For example, a downward increase in diasterane/sterane ratios may indicate a change in source rock facies or may be attributed to increasing maturity. Some shallow oils are biodegraded. The presence of short‐chain n‐alkanes in biodegraded oils indicates recent hydrocarbon migration. Biomarker data (e.g. the presence of oleanane) and compound‐specific isotope data suggest that the Khadum Formation in the lower part of the Maikop Group is the main source rock. However data from Cretaceous and Paleogene organic‐rich rocks, which may also have contributed to the accumulated oils, are urgently needed in order to quantify their possible input. In the Prikumsk Swell, at least two oil families, characterized by low and high C28/C29 sterane ratios respectively, can be distinguished in reservoir rocks of Triassic to Cretaceous age. Most oils are characterized by low C28/C29 sterane ratios and the absence of oleanane ("Group B oils"). These characteristics suggest a pre‐Upper Cretaceous source for the oils, which is also supported by the geological setting. Hierarchical cluster analysis suggests the presence of four sub‐groups (Sub‐Groups B1 to B4). Typically, biomarker ratios in oils in Cretaceous reservoirs are more uniform than those in Triassic and Jurassic reservoirs. Potential source rocks include Lower Triassic deep‐water clayey limestones and shales as well as Middle Jurassic and Aptian‐Albian marine shales. Three oil samples from Triassic and Cretaceous reservoirs form a separate oil family ("Group A"), which is genetically related to oils from the Terek‐Caspian fold‐and‐thrust belt. The multi‐valent manganese is ubiquitous in various marine environments and is involved in many biogeochemical processes with electron transfers between different oxidation states. The involvement of Mn (IV) in the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) in cold seeps has long been proposed by experimental simulation and was suggested to serve as an important sink of methane in the paleo‐oceanic environment. Nonetheless, metal‐dependent AOM processes still lack explicit geological evidence. Meanwhile, research on micronodules gained momentum in recent years, but the authigenic manganese micronodules in active cold seeps were yet not well studied. In this study, Mn‐rich sediments were discovered at the active Haima cold seeps area in the South China Sea, from which Mn‐micronodules were then extracted. These micronodules are irregular or subspheroidal with rough and porous surfaces and are mainly composed of 7 Å and 10 Å phyllomanganates. They are enriched in Mn, and deficient in Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and REYs. Characteristic microbial‐like mineralization structures are also observed. Based on these mineralogical/geochemical features and the abnormally high growth rate (calculated by the cobalt chronometer algorithm), these authigenic manganese micronodules were probably formed rapidly via biomineralization and chemical precipitation and were supplied with sufficient Mn by the metal‐rich seepage fluids. The occurrence of these micronodules demonstrates manganese bacterial activities, and indirectly reflects metal‐dependent AOM. Sulfate reduction (SR) and anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) are important redox processes in seepages. With the development of analysis methods, micronodules research gain momentum in recent years, but authigenic micronodules from cold seeps have not been well studied yet. In this paper, abundant Mn‐micronodules were identified in the surface sediments from the active Haima cold seeps of the South China Sea. Comprehensive geochemical and mineralogical analyses have been conducted on these micronodules to characterize their chemical and mineralogical features (e.g., enriched in Mn, deficient in Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and REYs, and microbial‐like mineralization structures). Based on these characteristics, the occurrence of these micronodules demonstrates manganese bacterial activities, and indirectly reflects metal‐dependent AOM. Overall, this study deepens the understanding of authigenic Mn minerals and the Mn geochemistry in active seepages. Olivine crystals in alkaline basalts preserve important information about the Oxygen fugacity and thermal condition of the mantle‐derived magma. This paper presents new olivine mineral chemistry and whole‐rock geochemistry for Early‐Cretaceous alkali basalts in the Ganjia area, northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. The olivine phenocrysts of Ganjia basalts have low Ni (74–2261 ppm) and high Ca contents (1217–4443 ppm), similar to the olivines in MORB, suggesting that they were crystallized from peridotite‐derived basaltic magma. Al‐in‐olivine/spinel thermometer results indicate crystallization temperatures of olivine around 1202 ± 46°C, corresponding to a mantle potential temperature of 1279 ± 47°C, with low oxygen fugacity of FMQ −1 to FMQ 0, suggesting a reduced mantle source. Whole‐rock geochemical compositions of the Ganjia basalts were characterized by low SiO2 contents (45.39%–48.70 wt%), high alkali contents (3.88–5.11 wt%), positive Nb and Ta anomalies, and enrichment in LREEs, HFSEs and LILEs, similar to those of OIB rocks, with high ratios of (Dy/Yb)N (1.38–1.54) and (La/Yb)N (5.37–7.42) ratios, indicating garnet residue. The above results suggest that the Early Cretaceous intraplate alkaline basalts in West Qinling were formed by a low degree of partial melting of peridotite and that no high‐temperature mantle plume existed. The Qinling Orogenic Belt may have been affected by the subduction of the Palaeo‐Pacific. Reconstructing the tectonic architecture of the southern Altaids is of great importance to piece together the continental growth history of the Central Asian continent. In this paper, we address the subduction‐accretion process of the Paleo‐Tianshan Ocean, one branch of the South Tianshan Ocean, in the southern Altaids, through a detailed geological and geochemical investigation of the Wulanmoren Accretionary Complex (WAC). The WAC is composed of ophiolitic mélanges, ocean plate stratigraphy mélanges, and turbiditic coherent units. In this study, we present key geological, petrological, and geochemical evidence indicating back‐arc and ocean island affinity of the igneous rocks of the WAC. Zircon U‐Pb dates of these rocks ages range between 380.2 ± 1.3 and 302.0 ± 5.3 Ma. The sedimentary matrix units of the mélanges were deposited in the Early Devonian (∼405 Ma) to the Late Triassic (∼222 Ma), rather than Silurian strata as previously thought. However, the ages of some detrital zircons in the sedimentary matrix are Precambrian, pointing to a complex evolution involving multiple ocean island terrains and island arcs of different ages that accreted from the mid‐Paleozoic to the Early Mesozoic. Plain Language Summary: Well‐exposed rock outcrops of the Wulanmoren Accretionary Complex (WAC) offer an ideal opportunity to solve the enigma of the evolutionary history of the Paleo‐Tianshan Ocean (PTO) of Central Asia. We report field observations, geochemistry, and geochronology of the WAC in the southern Altaids, pointing to multiple tectonic settings of ages spanning from the Early Devonian (∼405 Ma) to the Late Triassic (∼222 Ma). This paper presents a survey of geological attributes on the lateritic‐bauxitic deposits to examine their provenance, palaeogeography, and palaeoclimate condition in the Permian–Triassic boundary of Alborz Mountain, north Iran. The mineralogical analysis revealed that haematite, quartz, goethite, kaolinite, diaspore, boehmite, and anatase are the major rock‐forming minerals in these deposits. The major oxide composition of samples detected that enrichment of Al2O3 (up to 31.5%) and Fe2O3 (up to 37.9%) led to the formation of laterite, kaolinitic laterite, and bauxitic kaolinite. The distribution of trace and rare elements provides information about the enrichment of deposits concerning immobile elements. Employing geochemical proxies such as Al2O3/TiO2, bivariate diagrams of Eu/Eu* versus Sm/Nd and TiO2/Al2O3, enrichment of samples relative to heavy rare earth elements, and positive Eu anomaly revealed that the deposits originated from intermediate to mafic rocks. Several factors are inferred to be responsible for the transformation of parent rock(s) into lateritic‐bauxitic deposits: The high values of CIA, CIW, and PIA (mostly above 80) and increase of kaolinite point to deep to moderate parent rock(s) weathering, which is consistent with warming and humidity around the Permian–Triassic boundary. In continuation, transportation and trapping of weathered materials above the karstified carbonate bedrock of the Ruteh Formation and environmental interactions induced the formation of new minerals in a transitional environment near the vadose zone. The deposits have a generic correspondence with Palaeotethys Oceanic crustal subduction due to tectonic uplift, exhumation of bedrock, and regional sea‐level fall at the end of Palaeozoic that offered an opportunity for lateritization process. The Shamai tungsten deposit is located in the western part of the Xing'an Mongolian orogenic belt of northeastern China and contains quartz‐vein hosted tungsten mineralization. In this paper, we present the results of zircon laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA–ICP–MS) U–Pb dating of the fine‐grained biotite monzogranite, medium‐grained biotite monzogranite, and porphyritic biotite monzogranite samples from the deposit as well as in situ zircon Hf isotopic and in situ plagioclase Pb isotopic analyses. Combining new laser Raman spectroscopic data for fluid inclusions with previously HO isotopic data yields insights into the precipitation of ore minerals. The fine‐grained biotite monzogranite, medium‐grained biotite monzogranite, and porphyritic biotite monzogranite were emplaced at 142.5 ± 1.0 Ma, 141.9 ± 1.1 Ma, and 140.2 ± 1.0 Ma, respectively. The fine‐ to medium‐grained biotite monzogranite and porphyritic biotite monzogranite samples contain zircons with εHf(t) values from 3.2 to 7.9 and from 4.2 to 7.6, respectively, yielding tDM2 model ages from 996 to 692 Ma and 923 to 708 Ma, respectively. The geochemical, zircon Hf isotopic, and in situ plagioclase Pb isotopic data indicate that the magmas were generated by the partial melting of juvenile crustal material mixed with mantle‐derived components. The laser Raman and HO isotopic data for fluid inclusions within tungsten‐bearing quartz veins indicate that the tungsten mineralization formed as a result of fluid mixing. Combining the data with the spatial and temporal distribution and tectonic setting of tungsten deposits in NE China suggests that this area records four stages of mineralization at 300–290, 250–230, 200–180, and 150–130 Ma. The Qushandao Granite, mainly composed of alkali‐feldspar granite, is situated in the eastern Zhejiang province of coastal southeast China. In this paper, we present whole‐rock geochemistry, zircon U–Pb geochronology, and Hf isotopes to constrain the age, magma sources, and geodynamic setting of the Qushandao Granite. LA‐ICP‐MS zircon U–Pb dating results revealed that the Qushandao Granite was emplaced in the Late Cretaceous (101–98 Ma). Geochemically, the Qushandao Granite exhibits relatively high silica and alkali contents, metaluminous to weakly peraluminous (A/CNK = 0.98–1.02), and low abundances of phosphorus, titanium, magnesium, and calcium. It is also characterized by enrichment in Rb, K, Th, and depletion in Nb, Ta, P, Ti, and Sr with moderately to weakly negative europium anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.71–0.87). Furthermore, the Qushandao Granite displays lower FeOT/MgO, 104 × Ga/Al, and Zr + Nb + Ce + Y values relative to typical A‐type granites. Therefore, we classify the Qushandao Granite as calc‐alkaline I‐type granite based on a synthesis of geological and geochemical characteristics. The Qushandao Granite shows variable zircon Hf isotopic compositions (εHf(t) = −7.6 to +2.3) and TDM2 model ages of 1.40–0.83 Ga with a mean value of 1.17 Ga. We argue that the Qushandao Granite was most likely generated by mixing of mantle‐derived mafic magma and crust‐derived felsic magma in the lower crust, and that it was formed during post‐collisional extension in the Late Cretaceous, related to the gradually increasing subduction angle of the Paleo‐Pacific plate. The paper presents the results of the archaeometric investigation, conducted for the first time with the use of a wide range of analytical methods, on white and grey marbles exploited in the so‐called City and Regional Quarries of Aphrodisias (south‐western Turkey). The research, based on a multi‐method approach and performed on a representative set of samples, was aimed to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the most important properties of Aphrodisian marbles. The material studied here shows a large overlap in petrographic and geochemical features among the marbles exploited in local and regional quarries, as well as with most of the widespread marbles used in Antiquity. Surprisingly, none of the methods used here, either by themselves or used in combination, is sufficient to discriminate reliably between Aphrodisian and other marble types (mainly Paros‐Lakkoi and Prokonnesos), as well as between marbles extracted from the City and Regional Quarries. The only provenance indicator is the depleted δ13C values below +0.5‰ for the grey variety from sectors AF3 and AF9, which constitute 15% of collected samples. The presumed international use of Aphrodisian marbles may be difficult to verify based on these indistinct outcomes. This paper presents new zircon U–Pb–Hf isotopic and whole‐rock geochemical data for early Paleozoic–early Mesozoic igneous rocks from the Zhangguangcai Range, which are used to provide constraints on the petrogenesis and tectonic setting of these rocks and on the tectonic evolution of the eastern Songnen Massif. We dated five igneous rocks from the Zhangguangcai Range of the eastern Songnen Massif, namely, a late Cambrian (~489 Ma) syenogranite, a middle Silurian (~431 Ma) dacite, a Middle Triassic (~247 Ma) gabbro‐diorite and two Late Triassic (214–210 Ma) rhyolites. The late Cambrian syenogranite, middle Silurian dacite and Late Triassic rhyolites have high SiO2 and (Na2O + K2O) contents and low Mg# values. These four rocks are enriched in light rare earth elements (LREEs) and large‐ion lithophile elements (LILEs) but depleted in heavy REEs (HREEs) and high‐field‐strength elements (HFSEs). In addition, the εHf(t) values and TDM2 ages of zircons from these rocks range from −1.31 to +5.88 and from 1264 to 896 Ma, respectively. These data suggest that their primary magma was derived from partial melting of the juvenile mafic lower crust that was generated during the Mesoproterozoic–Neoproterozoic. The Middle Triassic gabbro‐diorite has low SiO2 and high MgO, Sc, Co, Cr and Ni contents and is enriched in LILEs and LREEs but depleted in HREEs and HFSEs such as Nb and Ta. Combining these features with the zircon εHf(t) values of the gabbro‐diorite, which range from +0.02 to +1.79, the primary magma of this rock is inferred to have been derived from partial melting of an isotopically depleted lithospheric mantle. The late Cambrian syenogranites and the middle Silurian dacites are weakly peraluminous and are classified as medium‐ to high‐K calc‐alkaline series, indicating that they formed in an active‐continental‐margin setting. The Middle–Late Triassic igneous rocks exhibit a bimodal igneous rock association, suggesting that they formed within an extensional environment. Combining our new results with previous findings, the early Paleozoic–early Mesozoic tectonic evolution of the eastern Songnen Massif is revealed. During the early Cambrian–early Silurian, the oceanic plate between the southern Songnen and southern Jiamusi massifs subducted westward beneath the Songnen Massif. The amalgamation between the southern Songnen and southern Jiamusi massifs occurred during the middle Silurian, and the southeastern Songnen Massif was in a post‐collisional extensional setting during the Devonian. During the late Carboniferous–Triassic, the Zhangguangcai Range was in an extensional environment, and the Mudanjiang Ocean started to open along the Jiayin–Mudanjiang Fault, separating the Songnen and Jiamusi massifs during the Middle–Late Triassic. This paper discusses the porphyry copper mineralization in A‐type granitoids from the Precambrian shield of the Karbi Hills (Mikir Hills), NE India. The prospective zone lies in the Kuthori‐Bagori of Kaziranga locality of the north Karbi Hills. The host granitoids are characterized by intermediate to high SiO2 (66.30–72.97 wt.%), Na2O (up to 4.90 wt.%), Ba (up to 1,943 ppm), Zr (up to 410 ppm), Y (up to 70 ppm) and Al2O3 (up to 14.77 wt.%) with low concentrations of CaO (up to 1.53 wt.%), and Cu (up to 32.41 ppm) which suggest a consistent granodiorite‐monzogranite host composition, an intraplate emplacement, A‐type chemistry, shoshonitic to high‐K calc‐alkaline and a predominant metaluminous character. Minerals in the investigated granitoids show hypogene alteration features similar to ideal porphyry style mineralization. Remnants of early chalcopyrite‐bornite‐magnetite (Magnetite‐I) veins have been preserved in the distant propylitic zone. The central core zone of potassic alteration shows the dominance of pyrite‐chalcopyrite‐magnetite (Magnetite‐II) assemblages. Mineral chemistry confirms the presence of two types of magnetites: magmatic (Mag‐I) and hydrothermal (Mag‐II). Mag‐I is octahedral, less commonly cubic, or irregular. It has a porous core with trellis‐type ilmenite exsolution lamellae. Mag‐II is non‐porous, devoid of ilmenite exsolution lamellae, has irregular to distinctly octahedral crystal habit and contains micro‐inclusions of pyrite, chalcopyrite, aluminosilicates, manganite and apatite. The progressive chemical purification of igneous magnetite, exacerbated by hydrothermal re‐equilibration, has resulted in a significant reduction in trace element contents such as Ti, Al, Mg, Zn and Cr, and a significant increase in iron content from 89 to ~94 wt.%. A combination of [Ni/(Cr + Mn) vs. Ti + V], and [(Ca + Al + Mn) vs. Ti + V] variation diagrams and upper threshold concentrations for the Kuthori‐Bagori ore effectively separates Mag‐I and Mag‐II. Our field, petrographic and geochemical data indicate that the Kuthori‐Bagori of Kaziranga granitoid of the Karbi Hills (Mikir Hills) in NE India is an ideal location for porphyry copper mineralization. This paper discusses whole‐rock geochemistry, mineral chemistry, and platinum group element (PGE) systematics of depleted mantle rocks (harzburgite and dunite) from the northern part of Nagaland–Manipur Ophiolite (NMO), north‐east India, to comprehend their source features, fractionation behaviour of PGE during magmatic evolution, and its tectonic origin. The studied ultramafic rocks are characterized by a low concentration of CaO (0.57–0.71 wt%), Al2O3 (0.18–0.92 wt%) with ∑REE of 1.135–2.702 ppm and high concentrations of MgO (38.70–44.21 wt%), Cr (1,843–4,572 ppm), and Ni (894–4,138 ppm). They show U‐shaped REE patterns [LREE and HREE enrichment (La/Sm)N = 1.85–4.11, (Dy/Yb)N = 0.51–0.85]. Olivine ranges Fo 88.18 to Fo92.23, whereas Cpx and Opx range En44.84 to En47.89 and En86.37 to En93.37 respectively. The chrome spinel Cr# [Cr/(Cr + Al)] and Mg# [Mg/(Mg + Fe2+)] are 0.47–0.83 and 0.31–0.60, respectively, which indicates recrystallization from a boninitic magma in a Supra‐Subduction Zone setting. Conventional thermometry indicates the equilibration temperatures of the dunite sample yielded high temperatures of ~850°C, suggesting their formation due to later interaction with high‐temperature percolating melts. The PGE contents in harzburgite are low (125.6–142.8 ppb) as compared to the dunite (248–360 ppb). They have high PPGE/IPGE and negative Pt* (Pt/Pt* = 0.73) anomaly, which is characteristic of re‐entry of PPGE into the system via reaction with percolating basaltic melt in the mantle wedge. Significantly higher concentration of PPGEs than IPGEs in the samples, indicating recrystallization of PPGEs with early sulphide fractionation. The presence of significant Rh and Pd enhancements relative to Pt in all samples suggests that Pt was removed during PGE fractionation. This could be one of the reasons for both harzburgite and dunite's sulphide undersaturation. PGE distribution in NMO ultramafic rocks was therefore validated as being governed by sulphide saturation in parental magma and altered not only by partial melting but also by fractionation during their production in the Supra‐Subduction Zone environment. Granites from the eastern Tibetan Plateau record information about the Tethys evolution. This paper reports a systematic study on the N‐S‐trending Late Cretaceous granite belt in the Yidun Terrane. The studied rocks are A‐type granites and I‐type granites with adakitic affinity. From north to south, the studied rocks have intermediate ages and whole‐rock geochemistry that shows a transitional composition. The granites from the northern Yidun Terrane were emplaced at 106–90 Ma. They are characterized by high silica (SiO2 > 70 wt.%) contents, low Mg# (10–38), Eu/Eu*(0.09–0.70), Sr/Y (1–12), and La/Yb (5–21) values and positive to negative εHf(t) (−7.6 to +2.5). In contrasts, granites from the southern Yidun Terrane were emplaced at 87–75 Ma and are intermediate to felsic with SiO2 < 70 wt.%, and higher Mg# (34–69), Eu/Eu* (0.64–1.01), Sr/Y (16–71), La/Yb (22–41) values, and negative εHf(t) values (−9.1 to −1.3). These features together with the Sr–Nd isotopic compositions show that granites from the northern Yidun Terrane were derived from partial melting of ancient crustal from the Yidun Terrane (Xiuwacu granite), with contributions of mantle‐derived components (Queershan and Genie batholiths). Granites from the southern Yidun Terrane likely originated from ancient thickened‐crustal source. The increase of Sr/Y and (La/Yb)N ratios from north to south suggests a crustal thickening, which influenced the magmatic process, resulting in the transition of geochemical composition of the studied granites. An eastward migrating arc post‐collisional model is proposed for the Lhasa‐Qiangtang collision when compared to the eastward younging Late Cretaceous granites in the Qiangtang Terrane. The southward migrating granitic magmatism in the Yidun Terrane was triggered by the eastward migrating rollback of the flat‐subducted Bangong–Nujiang oceanic slab beneath the Qiangtang Terrane. A prehistoric flint mine in Krzemionki with a neighboring area covers at least 2,300‐year history of striped chert extraction and dressing, spanning the age bracket of 3900 through 1600 B.C. The striped cherts occur in the form of concretions (nodules) varying from centimeters to at least 2 m across. This paper presents updated results of petrological and geochemical study of these siliceous rocks using optical and scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe analysis (major/trace elements), and laser ablation‐inductively coupled plasma‐quadrupole mass spectrometry (rare earth elements). Striped chert concretions show strong light REENASC enrichments in relation to heavy REENASC; distinctly positive Eu, Pr, Tb, Ho, and Tm anomalies (≥1.2); as well as predominantly low (<0.6) Al2O3/Al2O3 + Fe2O3 + Mn2O3 ratios. These features discriminate these siliceous rocks from most chert occurrences in Europe. Microanalysis of individual concretions has confirmed multiphase provenance of striped chert concretions as evidenced by variations in concentrations of REE and other minor and trace elements. During 2018 and 2019, the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover investigated the chemistry, morphology, and stratigraphy of Vera Rubin ridge (VRR). Using orbital data from the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars, scientists attributed the strong 860 nm signal associated with VRR to the presence of red crystalline hematite. However, Mastcam multispectral data and CheMin X‐ray diffraction (XRD) measurements show that the depth of the 860 nm absorption is negatively correlated with the abundance of red crystalline hematite, suggesting that other mineralogical or physical parameters are also controlling the 860 nm absorption. Here, we examine Mastcam and ChemCam passive reflectance spectra from VRR and other locations to link the depth, position, and presence or absence of iron‐related mineralogic absorption features to the XRD‐derived rock mineralogy. Correlating CheMin mineralogy to spectral parameters showed that the ~860 nm absorption has a strong positive correlation with the abundance of ferric phyllosilicates. New laboratory reflectance measurements of powdered mineral mixtures can reproduce trends found in Gale crater. We hypothesize that variations in the 860 nm absorption feature in Mastcam and ChemCam observations of VRR materials are a result of three factors: (1) variations in ferric phyllosilicate abundance due to its ~800–1,000 nm absorption; (2) variations in clinopyroxene abundance because of its band maximum at ~860 nm; and (3) the presence of red crystalline hematite because of its absorption centered at 860 nm. We also show that relatively small changes in Ca‐sulfate abundance is one potential cause of the erosional resistance and geomorphic expression of VRR. Plain Language Summary: Results from near‐infrared spectral measurements showed that Vera Rubin ridge (VRR) in Gale crater, Mars, has a unique spectral signature compared to the surrounding Mt. Sharp units, which was confirmed using instruments onboard the Curiosity rover. This paper describes the spectral, compositional, and physical properties of eight rocks that were drilled and analyzed by the Curiosity rover, including three rocks that are on VRR. Quantitative mineralogy, determined using the CheMin instrument, found that all eight rocks had plagioclase, clinopyroxene, ferric phyllosilicates, and red crystalline hematite in significant abundances. These minerals all have unique spectral signatures that contributed to spectra obtained by the Mastcam multispectral imager of the eight drilled rocks. By comparing spectral parameters of drill tailings from the eight rocks to their quantitative mineralogy, this paper found that the spectral differences of VRR and surrounding units are the result of variations in ferric phyllosilicates, clinopyroxene, and red crystalline hematite. New lab spectral measurements successfully reproduced the same trends as seen in data from the Curiosity rover. The results of this work help us better understand how different minerals affect the spectral signals we measure on Mars, which is extremely important to understanding its geologic history. This paper presents new zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotope data, and whole‐rock major and trace element geochemical data of Permian igneous rocks from the eastern Songnen Massif (SM) and the western Jiamusi Massif (JM), NE China, to constrain their tectonic evolution. Zircon U–Pb dating indicates that Permian magmatism within the eastern SM can be subdivided into two stages: early Permian (ca. 293 Ma) and middle to late Permian (272–257 Ma). The early Permian igneous rocks comprise a bimodal association of rhyolites, basaltic andesites, and gabbros. The middle to late Permian igneous rocks are dominated by gabbro–diorites, monzodiorites, quartz diorites, monzonites, quartz monzonites, granodiorites, monzogranites, syenogranites, and alkali feldspar granites, along with minor bodies of A‐type quartz trachytes. The Permian felsic magmas originated mainly from partial melting of a relatively juvenile lower crust, whereas the coeval mafic rocks were probably derived from partial melting of a relatively depleted lithospheric mantle that was modified by fossil subduction‐related fluids. The igneous rock associations and their geochemical features, together with data from coeval sedimentary and volcanosedimentary successions, indicate that Permian magmatism within the eastern Songnen and western Jiamusi massifs formed in an extensional environment, similar to a back‐arc setting, related to westward subduction of a Palaeo‐oceanic plate beneath the eastern margin of the Jiamusi Massif. Over the past decades, the burial realm, the most prolonged and arguably the least well‐understood diagenetic environment, has received significant research attention. Despite remarkable progress driven by exploratory drilling, outcrop analogue studies and experimental work, the scientific theories defining the burial sub‐domains are inconsistently presented in the literature. This paper reviews the concepts, processes and products that characterise the burial realm from the viewpoint of the carbonate geoscientist. Typical features of carbonate burial (fluid types, porosity evolution, diagenetic fabrics, patterns in isotope geochemistry) in epicontinental and marine basins are presented and discussed. A step towards an improved conceptual delimitation and a subdivision of the carbonate burial realm is taken, and an intuitive terminology is proposed. The very shallow limit of the burial realm is placed within the upper sediment column (redox boundary; centimetres to tens of metres). In the shallow (marine) burial domain (down to depths of many hundreds of metres), carbonate dissolution and reprecipitation, sediment dewatering and grain reorganisation take place. Interstitial waters are mainly marine (and subordinate meteoric) in origin and the system is fluid‐dominated. Under ongoing burial, physical and chemical compaction reduces pore space. At burial depths of ca 750 m, initial sediment porosities (40–80%) are reduced to about 30%. The intermediate burial domain (hundreds of metres to about 2 km; T < 100°C) is characterised by the transition from fluid‐buffered to rock‐buffered diagenesis. In the deep‐burial domain (ca 2–12 km; T > 100°C), marine formation fluids are increasingly modified by rock–fluid interaction and replaced by saline brines. The transition from the deep burial to the very low‐grade metamorphic domain is placed at depths of 12–15 km (T > 250°C). The southwestern Yangtze Craton hosts more than 400 carbonate‐hosted Pb–Zn deposits, and is well endowed with enormous base metals. The giant Maoping deposit is one of the most representative deposits, and the mineralization mainly occurs in the Devonian to Carboniferous dolomitic rocks. Its metallogenesis has been thoroughly discussed from many perspectives by previous studies, but it remains controversial, especially about the relationship between the structural process and the Pb–Zn mineralization. In this paper, we conducted large‐scale structural mapping and whole‐rock geochemical analysis to investigate the structural process and its control on the mineralization at Maoping. Three stages of deformation have been recognized, including the NE–SW‐striking folds and thrusts (D1), the N–S‐striking transtensional faults (D2), and the NW–SE‐striking transpressional structures (D3). The geochemical analysis shows relatively higher contents of the ore‐related trace elements in the tectonites from the N–S‐striking faults, indicating a close relationship between the N–S‐striking faults and the mineralization. Combined with field evidence and geochemical analysis, we propose that the N–S‐striking transtensional faults are likely the major ore‐conducting structures, and the NE–SW‐striking interlayer fractures serve as the assistant structures at the deposit scale. The regional NE–SW‐striking fold‐and‐thrust belts are suggested to dominate the spatial distribution and location of the Pb–Zn deposits in northeastern Yunnan at the regional scale. Our study enhances the understanding of the metallogenesis at Maoping and provides new insights into the Pb–Zn prospecting at both the regional scale and the deposit scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Geochronology and geochemistry are critical tools in geoscience research and research training, but students and faculty at many institutions have little or no access to the specialized and expensive facilities needed for sample preparation and analysis. Here, we explore whether a community laboratory, dedicated to hosting and training visitors, can help address this inequity by increasing access to specialized geochemical techniques and the resulting data. We report the first three years of outcomes from the Community Cosmogenic Facility, the goal of which is to improve access by making an increasingly important analytic technique more widely available. Although the facility we describe here focuses on cosmogenic nuclide sample preparation, the model we present is viable across the geosciences. Three years of development, assessment, and refinement demonstrate that the community laboratory model increased technique access to undergraduate and graduate students. Women were represented in first‐authored, peer‐reviewed papers at a rate nearly twice that of the broader community. In contrast, the participation of under‐represented groups did not increase over geoscience norms. Our data clearly illustrate that challenges to fostering a diverse geoscience community persist. Proactive interaction with faculty and students at Minority Serving Institutions, cohort‐focused training models, and financial support to visit community laboratories may be future steps toward further diversifying users of community facilities. Late Mesozoic granites are present throughout the Jiaodong Peninsula in eastern China, but the petrogenesis of these granites, the magma sources, and the geodynamic setting of the magmatism remain unclear. This paper presents new zircon U–Pb geochronological and Lu–Hf isotopic and whole‐rock geochemical data for the Late Jurassic Queshan pluton in the Shandong Peninsula, an area that represents the boundary between the Jiaobei and Sulu ultrahigh‐pressure (UHP) terranes. Laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry zircon U–Pb dating yields Late Jurassic ages from 158 ± 1 to 153 ± 1 Ma for the pluton in addition to a small number of inherited zircons that yield ages that cluster at 2410, 1831–1776, 750, and 209–202 Ma. Zircons from different samples have similar 176Hf/177Hf values (0.281926–0.282255) and variably negative εHf (t) values that range from −26.5 to −15.1 (weighted mean of −22.9 ± 0.9). The corresponding two‐stage Hf model ages range from 2,869 to 2,154 Ma, with a weighted mean value of 2,645 ± 54 Ma. These data indicate that the magmas that formed the Queshan pluton were derived from multiple sources, including the lower crust of the North China (NCC) and Yangtze (YC) cratons, as well as collision‐related alkaline rocks. The whole‐rock geochemical compositions of the samples indicate that the granites are weakly peraluminous, are high‐K and calc‐alkaline with I‐type affinities, and have high contents of Sr, low contents of Y and Yb, high (La/Yb)N and Sr/Y values, and positive Eu anomalies (δEu = 1.20–1.65), indicating an adakitic affinity. This indicates that the Queshan granites formed from magmas generated by partial melting of a thickened region of the crust (>50 km) associated with eclogite, garnet amphibolite, or amphibolite residual material. The genesis of the Late Jurassic granites are also likely to have been influenced by the collisional orogeny between the NCC and YC and continued subduction of the Izanagi Plate. Thickening of the lower crust associated with this continental collisional event occurred before the magmatism, with further compression and thickening of the lower crust caused by the low‐angle subduction of the Izanagi Plate beneath northeastern China being the main geodynamic driver of the formation of the granites in this region. Calc‐alkaline granitoid intrusions with abundant mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) are widespread in the East Kunlun orogenic belt (EKOB). Here, we present petrological observations, zircon U–Pb ages, whole‐rock geochemical, and Sr–Nd–Hf isotopic data for quartz diorites and the MMEs in the Asiha gold ore deposit in the EKOB, to constrain their petrogenesis and tectonic setting. The laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer 206Pb–238U ages of zircons indicate that the host quartz diorites and their MMEs from the Asiha gold deposit crystallized at 228.4 ± 1.7 Ma and 229.0 ± 1.7 Ma, respectively, which is similar to the gold mineralization age. Whole‐rock geochemical data indicate that the quartz diorites are I‐type granites. The MMEs have εHf(t) values of −7.6 to −0.2, −2.1 on average, whereas those of the quartz diorites range from −3.2 to −0.8, with a mean value of −2.1, which is identical within analytical uncertainty. Moreover, the host quartz diorites and their MMEs have relatively homogeneous Sr–Nd isotopic compositions, with high initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios and low εNd(t) values ranging from 0.70914 to 0.70963 and from −5.9 to −5.5, respectively. In summary, the MMEs and host quartz diorites have similar geochemical characteristics, indistinguishable Sr–Nd–Hf isotopic composition, and almost simultaneous crystallization age. Geochemical evidence shows that they formed due to the mixing of crust‐ and mantle‐derived magmas. Combined with our new results and published geological, geochronological, and geochemical data, this paper proposes that the EKOB had evolved into a post‐collisional environment at about 230–228 Ma, and the host quartz diorites and their MMEs from the Asiha complex formed in the transitional stage from the syn‐collisional to the post‐collisional setting. Hainan Island is a key part of the eastern Tethyan region and contains detailed geological information that can enhance our understanding of the tectonic evolution of this region since the late Palaeozoic. In this paper, we report geochronological, geochemical, and Sr–Nd isotopic data for granitoids from Baomei and Chahe in the northern part of Hainan Island. Three new zircon U–Pb ages of 243.3 ± 1.7 Ma, 237.1 ± 5.1 Ma, and 257.0 ± 4.0 Ma were obtained for these granitoids. The late Permian Chahe granite (257 Ma) is weakly peraluminous to peraluminous, and has rare earth element patterns and Ga/Al and FeOT/MgO ratios typical of A‐type granites formed in an extensional tectonic setting. The Middle Triassic Baomei granitoids (243–237 Ma) are weakly peraluminous, and exhibit a negative correlation between P2O5 and SiO2, which is typical of I‐type granites. All the granitoids have EM II‐type‐enriched mantle Sr–Nd isotopic compositions, which indicate that they were derived from a mantle source that had experienced enrichment and metasomatism. Hainan Island was in an extensional tectonic setting from the late Permian to Middle Triassic when widespread A‐ and I‐type granites were generated. We speculate that Hainan Island was mainly affected by the Tethyan tectonic domain during the Permian–Triassic, which involved closure of the Palaeo‐Tethys Ocean, collision of the Indochina and South China blocks, and subsequent post‐collisional extension. Although progress has been made in defining and explaining the temporal and spatial distributions of Neo‐Tethyan magmatism in the Tibet–Himalaya region, the correlation of magmatic suites in the SE Tibetan Plateau remains poorly constrained. This paper reports zircon U–Pb dating, geochemistry, and Sr–Nd isotope compositions of a concealed gabbroic unit (coverage area of >6.0 km2) in the southern Lancangjiang tectonic zone, western Yunnan, SW China. Zircon 206Pb/238U ages of 143–133 Ma indicate that the unit formed during the Early Cretaceous (ca. 139.7 Ma). The gabbro samples have variable MgO (7.88–16.1 wt%; Mg# = 58–74) and relatively low TiO2 (0.76–1.24 wt%) and total‐alkali (K2O + Na2O = 2.61–4.06 wt%) contents. The samples exhibit weakly fractionated rare earth element (REE) patterns with slight depletion in light REEs and negligible Eu anomalies. In a primitive‐mantle‐normalized element‐variation diagram, the gabbros, display variable enrichment in large‐ion lithophile elements and relatively flat patterns of high‐field‐strength elements. Initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.7079 to 0.7142 and relatively depleted εNd(t) values of +3.96 to +4.84 are similar to those of the mantle source of back‐arc basin basalts (BABBs) in the central Lhasa Block and mid‐ocean ridge basalt in the Indus–Tsangpo Suture Zone. These various characteristics suggest that the gabbroic unit was derived from a shallow and depleted mantle source by relatively high‐degree partial melting in the spinel stability field. The parental magma underwent slight crustal contamination, as well as fractional crystallization of clinopyroxene. The studied gabbros have distinct BABB‐type geochemical affinities similar to those of the Okinawa BABB. Combining our data with the coeval occurrence of a continental rift basin (the Simao–Lanping Basin) leads us to suggest the existence of a back‐arc rifting setting in the SE Tibetan Plateau during the Jurassic–Cretaceous. This setting can also be geochronologically and genetically correlated to the back‐arc basin developed within the Lhasa Block. The Kelameili Ocean was one branch of the Palaeo‐Asian Ocean, the initiation and closure history of which remains elusive. Consequently, they hamper our understanding of the accretionary evolution of the southern Altaids. In this paper, we carried out field mapping and also geochronological and geochemical analyses on the Huangcaopo Group in the northern Harlik Mountains, NW China. Field investigation revealed that "block‐in‐matrix" structure develops with blocks of andesite, limestone, sandstone, and gabbro in matrices of turbidites. Combined with our recent work, our field investigation indicates that the Huangcaopo Group is the southern extension of the Kelameili accretionary complex. A gabbro block (19HAM057) was dated at 500 ± 4 Ma, its geochemical affinity was defined to be similar to arc magmatic rocks. Magmatisms represented by two gabbroic intrusions (19HAM057‐2 and 19HAM048) were dated at the latest Devonian (360 ± 5 Ma) and the latest Carboniferous (299 ± 4 Ma), respectively. Their geochemistry displays enrichments in light rare earth elements (LREE) and large ion lithophile elements (LILE), but depletions in high field strength elements (HFSE, especially Nb and Ta). And a younger gabbroic intrusion (19HAM052) yielded crystallization age of the latest Permian (254 ± 3 Ma), and its geochemistry also shows affinity to arc magmatism. The magmatism represented by the gabbro block (19HAM057) was coeval with the Zhaheba‐Aermantai ophiolite, indicating that it was the product of incipient arc magmatism following subduction initiation in the Kelameili branch of the Palaeo‐Asian Ocean. However, two episodes of gabbroic magmas (19HAM057‐2 and 19HAM048) that intruded the Kelameili accretionary complex from the latest Devonian to latest Carboniferous indicate southward rollback of the subducting Kelameili oceanic lithosphere and resulted in the development of a growing arc. Meanwhile, the youngest gabbroic intrusion (19HAM052) suggests that northward subduction of the Kelameili oceanic lithosphere may have at least lasted to the latest Permian, indicating that the closure of the Kelameili Ocean might have been later than the latest Permian, most likely in the early Triassic. Our new data provide further constraints on the initiation and closure history of the Kelameili Ocean, which shed light on the accretionary evolution of the Altaids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The formation of mafic magmatic provinces are significant geological events that can drive mass extinctions and continental rifting and can influence basin evolution, petroleum prospectivity and mineralization. Buried magmatic provinces, however, are rarely identified and difficult to define. The Northwest Shelf of Australia contains large volumes of potentially interconnected mafic igneous material across several sedimentary basins. However, limited study and a lack of surface exposure have prevented detailed description and classification of these rocks. In this study, the distribution and composition of these mafic igneous rocks are described using an integrated geophysical and geochemical approach, which included over 10,000 km line length of 2D seismic data, well log data and chemical analysis of samples from 14 wells across the Browse, Roebuck, Canning and North Carnarvon basins. Using this combined data set, we demonstrate interconnectivity of buried mafic igneous rocks across the Northwest Shelf and calculate a total surface area exceeding 280,000 km2 and a cumulative minimum volume of ∼140,000 km3. Petrology and geochemistry of samples indicate they are basaltic and doleritic with alkaline and sub‐alkaline compositions and formed in a continental rift setting. Collectively, the igneous rocks meet the criteria for classification as a mafic magmatic province (MMP) and closely match the criteria required for classification as a large igneous province (LIP). Emplacement of the newly defined Northwest Shelf MMP may represent hotspot magmatism that could have initiated rifting of the Cimmerian Block from NW Australia during the Permian and could have potential for future, large scale CO2 sequestration and storage. Plain Language Summary: Magmatic provinces are large bodies of igneous rock often tied to significant changes in Earth's history such as mass extinction events and continental rifting. Many magmatic provinces are exposed on the surface and can be studied directly; however, studying magmatic provinces that are buried under hundreds to thousands of meters of sedimentary rock becomes increasingly difficult. In this paper, we indirectly map and characterize igneous rocks buried within the Northwest Shelf of Australia using seismic data and drilled rock samples. Combining these results, we found the igneous rocks all formed together, most likely during supercontinent break‐up around 250 million years ago. We conclude that these rocks represent a new magmatic province, named the Northwest Shelf Mafic Magmatic Province. Recognition of this magmatic province is exciting because it may have contributed to an important global extinction event, presents new mineral resource opportunities and may be suitable for large scale CO2 sequestration to combat climate change. The study of the palaeoenvironment of the Early Cretaceous has been a significant research topic, largely due to the "Jehol Biota" in western Liaoning and the important prospect of fossils in Dakangpu Layer. Based on the sedimentology of Dakangpu Layer, it is helpful to get a deeper understanding of the living environment of the "Jehol Biota." Varves are highly developed in the Dakangpu Bed of lower Cretaceous Yixian Basin in western Liaoning, China, supplying reliable and high‐quality proxies to explore the palaeoclimate. This paper reconstructs the palaeo‐lake environment and palaeoclimate, using petrography, facies associations, varves components, and geochemistry. Detailed petrographic studies helped to recognize 11 lithofacies which were grouped into two facies associations: Shallow lake and deep to semi‐deep lake sequences. The delicate structure of varves in the Dakangpu Bed were divided into two categories: Clastic and endogenic. Additionally, two sub‐types of clastic varves have been discovered, with distinct components, thickness, and distribution in vertical sequence. Nineteen representative samples of varves reveal that rare earth and trace elements have a similar change trend. The composition, formation, and preservation of the varves in the Dakangpu Bed depicted a deep lake, with stratified water and oxygen‐depleted bottom layer environment. The U/Th ratios and V/Cr ratios are in the ranges of 0.37–1.55 and 0.97–10.47 respectively, supporting the redox environment's minor fluctuation. The varve thickness, flood frequency, sporopollenin collections, and geochemical data indicated that precipitation and humidity decreased gradually in the sedimentary period, and the climate changed to warmer and drier, with fluctuations in the middle to later periods. This paper studies the major, trace, and rare earth elements (REEs) in fluvial sediments from the Yarlung Zangbo River (YZR) on the Tibetan Plateau, China, with the aim of investigating their provenances, sediment maturity, weathering conditions, and tectonic settings. All samples and analytical techniques are based on Environmental Geochemical Monitoring Networks, which are a crucial part of IGCP259/360 (Global Geochemical Baseline). The results show that the YZR sediments consist of greywacke and litharenite with low‐moderate maturities of textures and minerals. The chemical index of alteration (CIA) (49–71), plagioclase index of alteration (49–77), and index of compositional variability (ICV) values (0.82–1.54) indicate that both mature and immature sediments are present in the YZR and have experienced weak to moderate weathering with little intense weathering in the source area, which is also confirmed by the ICV‐CIA, A‐CN‐K, A‐CNK‐FM, and MFW plots. Moreover, the provenance discrimination diagrams suggest that the YZR sediments are predominantly derived from felsic rocks that are close to the upper continental crust and from acid intermediates, and the tectonic settings of the YZR source rocks were associated with active continental margins and continental island arcs. The overall sediment types, weathering conditions, and tectonics of the YZR were consistent with those of the Brahmaputra River and Meghna River during the Himalayan–Tibetan orogeny, while the sediments of the Brahmaputra River are characterized by recycled‐quartzose sources when compared with the other two Himalayan rivers due to the contributions of quartzolithic composition.
