Policymakers are becoming increasingly interested in the means by which individuals can be encouraged to engage in environmental actions around the home. This paper uses evidence from existing empirical research and a large questionnaire survey undertaken by the author to argue that environmental action is open to a range of influences, focusing especially on environmental values, situational characteristics and psychological variables. Accordingly, the paper asserts that strategies for promoting environmentally responsible behaviours (such as energy saving, water conservation and waste recycling) should take account of these factors. ABSTRACT This paper contributes to a growing body of literature highlighting the limitations of behaviour change and the emergence of a social practice approach to reframe responses to escalating resource consumption. Drawing insights from interviews with Australian households and workshops with behaviour change practitioners, we demonstrate how the 'Going Green' discourse, which focuses on targeting individuals to participate in 'easy' sustainability actions, overlooks the majority of consumption implicated in everyday practices. This leaves unchallenged the complex ways in which our lives are becoming more resource intensive. We argue for an ontological framing of social change underpinned by theories of social practice. Rather than considering policies, regulations and infrastructures involving urban form, housing, transport and infrastructure provision as 'external factors' separate from behaviour, practice theories accord them integral status in the constitution of social order and change. This represents a more challenging agenda for practitioners and governments in shifting and transforming everyday life. This work tackles from an empirical perspective the widely debated relationship between sustainability in business practices and profitability, focusing on a sample of listed European firms. To measure the extent of sustainable practices at the firm level, the Comprehensive Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) score is proposed. The indicator, computed using the Mazziotta‐Pareto method, combines qualitative ratings on adherence to ESG standards with quantitative observations on the extent of data disclosure. Firms failing to pursue full disclosure are penalized. Focusing on the constituents of the Euro Stoxx 300 index, a dynamic panel model is implemented, where profitability is explained by the indicator. The results show that sustainability in business practices reduces profitability. These findings are in line with a strand of literature that highlights the role of strategic disclosure of ESG information on part of firms. Strategic disclosure occurs as a combination of greenwashing and social washing, with firms overstating the extent of their positive behaviors. The integration of sustainable practices within successful business models thus remains a relevant societal problem. The current EU policy framework is discussed in line with our findings. The aerospace industry is facing new challenges in managing sustainable development. From an instrumental perspective, eco‐friendly business models should strengthen operations efficiency and improve companies' reputations while also creating conditions for stronger financial performance. Accordingly, the present study examines the drivers leading aerospace companies to engage in corporate environmental responsibility (CER) and its impacts. First, we investigate whether and to what extent the characteristics of the board, as an effective corporate governance (CG) mechanism, foster CER. Second, we analyse the impact of CER engagement on both accounting‐ and market‐based measures of corporate financial performance (CFP). Using a worldwide sample of 157 aerospace companies over the period from 2005 to 2019, this study identifies notable findings. In the first stage, the results show that identified characteristics of the board of directors are positive predictors of higher CER engagement. In the second stage, the findings indicate that CER engagement drives higher profitability and positive appreciation among financial stakeholders. Consistent with this win‐win scenario, we provide empirical support for the conflict resolution hypothesis at the governance level. Furthermore, we recommend that firms in the aerospace industry increase their involvement in environmental policies that enhance competitive advantage and market value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Currently, the debate on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the strategies implemented by organizations to disseminate their business actions, fuels the discussion on aspects that point to sustainable development. To show their CSR strategies, one of the mechanisms used by companies is the presentation of sustainability reports. In this work, we have modified the analysis approach traditionally used to demonstrate the characteristic factors of transparency in the field of CSR. Specifically, we focus on analyzing which indicators are the least disclosed by companies. Within this framework, the objective of this work is to analyse the practices of dissemination of environmental information based on the sustainability reports of the global reporting initiative produced by large companies, in order to establish differences and similarities in corporate social responsibility. The results obtained for a sample of 80 large companies and 67 multinational enterprises (MNEs) indicate a slight difference in the disclosure of environmental indicators. Concretely, the results reveal that 56.12% of environmental indicators are not disclosed by large companies; while, in MNEs, 51.23% of these indicators are not reported. In large companies, the greatest deficiencies in the disclosure of environmental information correspond to the categories of biodiversity, environmental grievance mechanisms, and effluents and waste. Embracing green innovation is one of the most common elements for improving the firm's environmental performance. In a business environment with high level of bureaucratic corruption, companies can easily neglect their environmental accountability. Therefore, strong motivations are needed to prompt or force companies to acknowledge their environmental responsibility. To discover which types of companies embrace green practices, this study explored the association between customer relationship orientation—as a part of the firms' culture—and the adoption of green product and process innovation via a mediator, market‐focused learning. Results from two surveys of 224 small and medium‐sized enterprises in Iran post‐sanction (late 2016 and early 2017) showed that the adoption of green product and process innovation is higher among small and medium‐sized enterprises with customer‐oriented corporate culture. In addition, this research verified that market‐focused learning was an underlying mechanism through which customer‐oriented corporate culture was related to the adoption of green product and process innovation. Accordingly, this study identified the extent to which companies' building a "constant relationship with customers" was a suitable way to identify those companies' going green and showing more environmental accountability in a bureaucratic corrupted environment. This study investigates the role of institutional pressures in corporate environmental responsibility (CER) by testing the interacting effects among cognitive, regulative, and normative pressures at cross levels. Specifically, this research decomposes the cognitive dimension of CER into perceived environmental benefit and perceived ethical obligation to differentiate their mechanisms. The sample is obtained from 212 firms within 34 industrial clusters. Results of two‐level regression modeling confirm that regulative and normative pressures play different roles in the positive effects of perceived environmental benefit and perceived ethical obligation on CER. Regulative pressure attenuates the effect of perceived environmental benefit and amplifies the effect of perceived ethical obligation. Meanwhile, normative pressure attenuates the effect of perceived ethical obligation. These findings suggest that heterogeneous interaction effects may reduce the efficiency of institutional pressures during the initial stage of CER diffusion.
