Pyraclostrobin-based fungicides play an effective role in controlling fungal diseases and are extensively used in agriculture. However, there is concern regarding the potential adverse effects attributed to exposure to these fungicides on non-target organisms and consequent influence exerted on ecosystem functioning. Thus, it is essential to conduct studies with model organisms to determine the impacts of these fungicides on different groups of living organisms. The aim of this study was to examine the ecotoxicity associated with exposure to commercial fungicides containing pyraclostrobin. The focus of the analysis involved germination and initial development of seedlings of 4 plant models (Lactuca sativa, Raphanus sativus, Pennisetum glaucum and Triticum aestivum), in addition to determining the population growth rate and total carbohydrate content in microalga Raphidocelis subcapitata. The fungicide pyraclostrobin adversely influenced growth and development of the tested plants, indicating a toxic effect. The fungicide exerted a significant impact on the initial development of seedlings of all model species examined with T. aestivum plants displaying the greatest susceptibility to pyraclostrobin. Plants of this species exhibited inhibitory effects on both aerial parts and roots when treated with a concentration of 4.75 mg/L pyraclostrobin. In addition, the green microalga R. subcapitata was also significantly affected by the fungicide, especially at relatively high concentrations as evidenced by a reduction in total carbohydrate content. This commercial fungicide demonstrated potential phytotoxicity for the tested plant models and was also considered toxic to the selected microalgae, indicating an ecotoxic effect that might affect other organisms in aquatic environments. Background:Methods:Results:Conclusions:Ripgut brome (Bromus diandrus Roth) is a problematic weed in New Zealand cereals and has developed resistance to various herbicides worldwide, including ACCase, ALS, and EPSPS inhibitors. A population in New Zealand's South Island from wheat recently showed resistance to the ALS-inhibitor pyroxsulam. This study investigates the resistance level in this population.The resistant ripgut brome population was compared to a susceptible population from a nearby organic farm. The level of resistance to pyroxsulam was determined using dose–response assays. The cytochrome P450 inhibitor malathion was used to evaluate the possible role of cytochrome P450 in herbicide metabolism.The estimated LD50 for pyroxsulam in the resistant population was significantly higher (126 g ai ha−1), suggesting a 20-fold reduction in sensitivity compared to the control (6 g ai ha−1). Malathion pre-treatment increased herbicide sensitivity in susceptible and resistant populations.This study confirms significant resistance to pyroxsulam in a New Zealand ripgut brome population and suggests that a target-site resistance mechanism is the most likely explanation. This research adds to global evidence that ripgut brome can become resistant to pyroxsulam and underscores the escalating issue of herbicide-resistant weeds in New Zealand agriculture. Wheat is a very vital cereal crop in the development of a nation’s economy and agricultural sector. A crucial element that profoundly affects the growth and productivity of wheat is the soil temperature. As an insulating layer, straw mulch controls the soil temperature. Field measurement of the soil temperature is time-consuming and costly; therefore, the present study investigates the applicability of random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM) and generalized regression neural network (GRNN) models for estimating soil temperature in wheat fields covered with straw mulch using meteorological, soil cover and agronomical parameters. A field study was conducted on the wheat cultivar with two soil cover treatments for measuring the soil temperature at three depths (5, 50 and 80 cm). Soil plant analysis development value; soil cover and depth; daily meteorological data such as average air temperature, average relative humidity, sunshine hours and vapor pressure were used as inputs for machine learning models in training and testing. Statistical performance indicators showed applicability of three models with a root mean square error (RMSE) ranging from 0.245–0.595°C, 0.867–0.886°C and 0.557–0.812°C, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) ranging from 0.917–0.987, 0.823–0.836 and 0.804–0.935 and Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) ranging from 0.949–0.991, 0.887–0.897 and 0.881–0.957 for the RF, SVM and GRNN, respectively. Results indicated better performance of the RF model for predicting the soil temperature at different depths in the case of both crop and soil cover conditions. Safeguarding the agricultural environment from pollution is one of the most critical challenges facing the world in the context of climate change. The loss of nitrogen fertilizers through agricultural runoff or volatilization in the form of nitrate or ammonia emissions is a significant contributor to pollution. This loss also represents an economic waste that may lead to increased prices of agricultural products. Therefore, finding a solution to this problem has become imperative. An experiment was conducted on wheat plants using various rates of urea coated with slow-release materials. The study aimed to assess the impact of these fertilizers on wheat growth and yield, nutrient uptake, and nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUtE). Results demonstrated that urea fertilizers coated with slow-release materials outperformed conventional fertilizers in terms of wheat growth and yield, uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, as well as NUtE. The most favorable outcomes were achieved using urea-formaldehyde, urea-humic, and urea-biochar fertilizers at 100% of the recommended nitrogen application rate. This resulted in economically viable grain production with high fertilizer efficiency. Based on these findings, we recommend applying either urea-formaldehyde or urea-humic at a rate of 107 kg N ha−1 to produce wheat grain and straw with enhanced NUtE. Agronomy biofortification is an important crop management strategy to enhance concentrations of micronutrients in edible portions. The availability of micronutrients for plant uptake is reduced by the high salinity, pH, and lime of soils. Hence, this study aimed to determine the most appropriate time and the best ratio of zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) consumption during the wheat growth stages in a saline and calcareous soil. The experiment consisted of two factors with four levels; 0, 30, 60, and 120 kg Zn ha−1 as Zn0, Zn1, Zn2, and Zn3 respectively, and 0, 2.5, 5, and 7.5 kg Fe ha−1 as Fe0, Fe1, Fe2, and Fe3 respectively, in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The results showed that the interaction effects of Fe and Zn fertilizers application were significant on the wheat yield indices and concentration of Fe and Zn in wheat shoots and grain. The simultaneous application of 120 kg Zn ha−1 and 5 kg Fe ha−1 caused significant improvement (p < 0.05) in thousand kernel weight (9.1%) and subsequently grain yield (23.4%) compared to the control treatment. The Zn concentration in the wheat shoot during tillering (37.0–58.2 mg Zn kg−1) was higher than the other two growth stages (elongation (29.2–40.8 mg Zn kg−1) and booting (20.0–31.0 mg Zn kg−1)). While the highest Fe concentration in wheat shoots was observed at the stem elongation stage (98.5–268.8 mg Fe kg−1), then the booting stage (91.0–150.8 mg Fe kg−1) and finally the least absorption was at the tillering (80.0–120.0 mg Fe kg−1). Because of the high calcium carbonate, salinity and Zn- deficient soil of the experimental site, the Zn concentration in wheat grain was obtained in a range of 3 to 19 mg kg−1. The results clarified that the fertilizer application of 30 kg Zn ha−1 and 2.5 kg Fe ha−1 can be proportionally and simultaneously increased the concentration of Fe and Zn in wheat grain by 100%. Therefore, the soil application of 30 kg Zn and 2.5 kg Fe per hectare proposed for improvement in quantitative (619 kg ha−1 increase in wheat grain yield) and qualities (100% increase in grain Zn and Fe concentration and 8% increase in thousand kernel weight) indices of wheat yield in calcareous and saline soils. Zinc (Zn) deficiency and salt stress are well-known soil problems and often happen parallelly in cultivated soils. In this study, Zn-amino acid complexes (Zn-AAc) were used as a source of Zn to determine their effects on salt-induced damage in wheat plants. The bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cvs. Kavir) was supplied with Zn-glycine (Zn-Gly), Zn-alanine (Zn-Ala), and ZnSO4 as Zn sources at three salinity levels (EC 2, 4 and 6 dS m-). Salinity caused a significant decrease in shoot dry matter and grain yield of wheat, but this negative effect was significantly improved by the application of Zn-AAc. Salt stress decreased shoot and grain Zn concentration, but this reduction was lower in plants supplied by Zn-AAc. Calcium (Ca) and potassium (K) concentrations were increased in a shoot by salinity stress while decreased in grain. Sodium (Na) concentration decreased in shoot and grain by using Zn-AAc. At all of the salinity levels, wheat supplied with Zn-AAc had lower lipid peroxidation compared to those grown under the ZnSO4 source. Application of Zn-AAc increased the activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the roots of wheat plants in saline conditions. Selenium (Se) is a micronutrient that has multiple biochemical effects ranging from a nutritional deficiency at low levels to toxicity at high levels. Its quantification in environmental systems is vital to protect the health of people and animals. This study developed and validated methods to determine the total selenium (Se) concentration in soil, maize plants, and maize flour. The performance of the methods was ascertained using matrix certified reference materials (CRMs), namely NMIJ CRM 7303-a (trace elements in lake sediments), NIST SRM 1646-a (estuarine sediments), NIST SRM 1570-a (spinach leaves), NIST SRM 1571 (orchard leaves), NCS ZC 73010 (maize flour) and NIST RM 8437 (hard red spring wheat flour). All methods fulfilled the performance requirements of the AOAC International. An acceptable accuracy was achieved with percentage recoveries between 57 and 102% and E n ‐ scores within ±1 limits. Repeatability ( RSD r , %) and intermediate precision (RSD R , %) ranged from 4 to 12%, and 9 to 15%, respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) for soil were 0.024 ng. g−1 and 0.082 ng. g−1, respectively. The LODs and LOQs for maize plants and flour were 0.0036 and 0.0179 ng. g−1, respectively. The performance characteristics of the methods were comparable with previously reported methods, confirming reliability. The measurement uncertainty was evaluated following the guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM). Fusarium graminearum causes Fusarium head blight (FHB) disease in wheat worldwide. Although F. graminearum is reported to secrete several effectors, their role in virulence and pathogenicity is unknown. The study aimed at identifying candidate genes with a role in pathogenicity and virulence using two different host systems, Arabidopsis thaliana and wheat, challenged with F. graminearum TN01. Detached leaf assay and histological studies revealed the virulent nature of TN01. A genome-wide in silico search revealed several candidate genes, of which 23 genes were selected based on reproducibility. Gene expression studies by reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in leaf tissues of Arabidopsis and the two wheat genotypes, the susceptible (Sonalika) and the resistant (Nobeoka Bozu/Nobeoka), compared with mock-treated controls in a time-course study using fungal- and plant-specific genes as internal controls revealed that these genes were differentially regulated. Further, expression of these candidates in F. graminearum–inoculated Sonalika and Nobeoka spikes compared with mock-treated controls revealed their role in pathogenicity and virulence. Gene ontology studies revealed that some of these secretory proteins possessed a role in apoptosis and ceratoplatanin and KP4 killer toxin syntheses. A three-dimensional protein configuration was performed by homology modeling using trRosetta. Further, real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) studies in F. graminearum–inoculated Arabidopsis and wheat at early time points of inoculation revealed an increased expression of the majority of these genes in Sonalika, suggesting their possible role in pathogenicity, whereas low mRNA abundance was observed for 11 of these genes in the resistant genotype, Nobeoka, compared with Sonalika, indicating their role in virulence of F. graminearum. Synthetic genes for the two subunits of phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase (PheRS) from wheat were expressed in Escherichia coli. When each gene was induced individually, the α subunit with a cleavable 6 × His tag at the amino terminus was largely soluble, while the β subunit was almost completely insoluble. When the two subunits were co-expressed, a soluble fraction containing the two subunits were obtained. This was purified by a standard method in which the tag was cleaved off with a specific protease after affinity purification. As the sample contained slightly more PheRSα than PheRSβ, we further resolved the sample by gel filtration to obtain the fraction that showed the size of the conventional α2β2 tetrameric complex and contains an almost equal amount of the two subunits. The final yield was 0.6 mg per 1 liter of the culture medium, and the specific activity was 28 nmol min−1 mg−1, which was higher than that of a fraction purified from wheat germ. This recombinant PheRS was used, along with purified samples of the elongation factors and the ribosomes from wheat germ, for a poly(U)-dependent poly(Phe) synthesis reaction. After the 1960s, breeding activities carried out on many crops, including wheat, and the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, saw increased criticism of the negative consequences in terms of nutrition, social, and environmental impacts. There is a current re-emphasis upon changing the methods of flour and bread production technologies, and wheat landrace varieties have made a resurgence. Wheat landrace varieties have become widespread and create the demand for their consumption as an alternative to industrial wheat. Producers have come together to form collectives of different structures and seek ways to expand production of wheat landraces. As a result, alternative food consumption communities have become established in which consumers can access wheat landrace products. The factors related to the development of wheat, flour, bulgur, bread, etc. should be put forward to consumers and producers. The fieldwork of this research is based on five community supported food groups formed by consumers in the İzmir province of Turkey, and associations/groups that produce wheat varieties in Çanakkale, Balıkesir and Kars provinces. The aim of the research is to identify common problems that reduce the separation between wheat production and consumption and how to increase the use of wheat landraces and their products by using participatory action research. Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE) and recovery with nitrogen (N) fertilization rates in crop rotations need further exploration. The effect of cropping sequence and N fertilization rate were evaluated on spring wheat N concentration and uptake, N harvest index (NHI), N-use efficiency (NUE), and N recovery index (NRI) from 2012 to 2019 in the northern Great Plains, USA. Cropping sequences were conventional till spring wheat-fallow (CTWF), no-till spring wheat-fallow (NTWF), no-till spring wheat-pea (Pisum sativum L.) (NTWP), and no-till continuous spring wheat (NTCW), and N fertilization rates to spring wheat were 0, 50, 100, and 150 kg N ha−1. Straw N concentration and N uptake were greater for CTWF than NTWP and NTCW in 4 out of 8 years and increased with increased N fertilization rate. Grain N concentration and NHI varied with treatments and years. Grain N uptake was greater for CTWF and NTWF than NTWP and NTCW at most N fertilization rates and years. In contrast, NUE was greater for NTCW than CTWF and NTWF at all N fertilization rates in most years. The NRI was greater for NTWP or NTCW than CTWF or NTWF in most years. Increasing N fertilization rate increased grain N uptake for most cropping sequences in all years but had a variable effect on NUE and NRI. Although spring wheat N concentration and N uptake were superior for CTWF and NTWF, and NUE for NTCW, NTWP with 50 to 100 kg N ha−1 can be used to sustain grain yield, N uptake, NUE, and NRI. Wheat is a crop of great food importance for food production in Brazil. However, the improvement of this crop is still concentrated in isolated areas, which hinders advances in new cultivation regions due to the extensive demand for existing information. In this investigation, four wheat genotypes analysed to study associations and interrelationships between wheat traits across nine environments during the agricultural years of 2016, 2017 and 2018. The experiment was conducted using a randomised block design with four repetitions, and the analysis was divided into two groups: morphological and productive traits of wheat, comprising three and eleven characteristics, respectively. Canonical correlations between the morphological and productive groups were found to be dependent in most environments. Taller plants with longer main spikes and longer tiller spikes can be indirectly selected to increase grain yield under different sowing conditions. The information generated in this study indicate that some care must be taken when using the interrelations between trait groups to select or recommend genotypes for broader regions, as these relationships are influenced by the specific conditions of each region and sub-region. Two experiments were conducted to determine net energy (NE) values of wheat bran ingredients and develop a prediction equation for NE of wheat bran. In each experiment, 12 multiparous pregnant sows were allocated to two 3 × 6 Youden squares with three consecutive periods and six diets in each square. The study consisted of six diets, including a corn-soybean meal basal diet and five diets formulated with 29.2% wheat bran. Each period lasted for 10 d, with 5 d allocated for adaptation and followed by 5 d for heat production measurement. Sows were provided feed at 604 kJ/kg BW0.75·d−1. On day 10, sows underwent fasting to measure fasting heat production. Results indicated that the inclusion of wheat bran in the diets significantly reduced digestibility of energy and nutrients in (p < 0.05). The average net energy (NE) content of wheat bran was determined to be 8.8 MJ/kg DM. A regress equation NE = 7.968 + 0.28 × CP + 0.607 × EE − 0.782 × ash − 0.05 × hemicellulose (R2 = 0.98, p < 0.01) was found to accurately predit the NE value when feeding pregnant sows with wheat bran-based diets. In conclusion, the net energy content of wheat bran fed to pregnant sows ranged from 7.24 to 10.67 MJ/kg DM and can be effectively estimated using proximate analysis methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The yields realized under rice-wheat rotation are generally low in the geographical regions prone to B deficiency and a sound B application schedule recommendation is required for the sustainable yields and enhanced soil fertility. The effect of different B application schedules involving different dosages and frequency of B application was investigated on yields and B nutrition of rice-wheat rotation and changes in the chemical fractions of B in soil in six years field study carried out on a sandy loam (Typic hapludoll). Based on the average grain yields of rice and wheat during the period of experimentation, application of 1.5 kg B as borax ha−1 to rice crop on alternate years was the profitable practice for mollisols as it gave an average yearly production of 5.51 t of rice grain and 4.28 t of wheat grain ha−1. The average concentration of B in flag leaves and grains of rice was much lower compared to wheat crop. The recommended schedule of B application to rice-wheat rotation resulted in a Benefit: Cost ratio of 11: 1 and also maintained the optimum level of B in soil. Most of the added B markedly increased specifically bound (0.05 M KH2PO4 extractable), ammonium oxalate (pH 3.3) extractable fractions followed by residual and organically bound fraction in the soil. Zinc (Zn) deficiency is one of the most prevalent micronutrient deficiencies and is mostly brought on by a diet high in cereal grains with low Zn contents. In order to screen prominent bread (12 varieties) and durum (6 varieties) wheat varieties grown under Zn deficient (control) and sufficient (Zn @ 25 mg kg−1 as soil) condition and a pot experiment was conducted in the screen house of the Department of Soil Science, Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar. In the Zn deficient and sufficient soil, the highest yield was observed in HD-2967 (14.57 & 16.13 g/pot) and PWD-291 (8.68 & 11.70 g/pot) of bread and durum wheat, respectively. In Zn-deficient soil, the highest total protein content and Zn content in grain were observed in DBW-88 (8.17 & 26.50%) and PWD-291 (8.42 & 26.52%) of bread and durum wheat, respectively. All the bread wheat varieties were found to be semi tolerant, i.e. the percentage increase in yield was in the category of 10–25% except WH-52 and RAJ-3765 where increase in yield was more than 25%. The maximum increase in yield was found 28.91% in the WH-542 and the minimum increase (10.70%) in the HD-2967 wheat varieties. For durum wheat, two varieties (WH-912 &WHD-943) were found to be semi tolerant, i.e. the percentage increase in yield was in the category of 10–25%. In this study, submerged and solid-state fermentation studies were performed for xylanase production simultaneously to determine ideal carbon and nitrogen sources together with necessary production parameters from the laboratory scale to the pilot scale. The results showed that barley malt sprout is effective as a nitrogen and a good carbon source. Under optimum conditions, xylanase activities 71.74 ± 2.70 U/mL, 56.95 ± 3.6 U/mL, 65.8 ± 8 U/mL and 46.05 ± 0.1 U/mL were achieved in shake flasks, 2, 10 and 30 L bioreactors, respectively. In solid-state fermentation studies, maximum activity in flasks was 759.15 ± 36.16 U/g production media, and maximum activity in pilot-scale tray bioreactor productions was 1312 ± 137.85 U/g dry substrate. Bread-making trials showed that using xylanase at 100 U/100g flour resulted in a significant increase in the loaf volume of wheat flour bread and whole wheat flour bread. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the major vernalization locus 'Vrn-D1', the spring allele, Vrn-D1a, and two winter alleles, Vrn-D1b and vrn-D1, have been identified in wheat. We conducted field trials to determine the effects of alleles on growth and yield-related traits, using near-isogenic lines developed in the genetic background of spring type wheat cultivars, 'Abukumawase' and 'Asakazekomugi', both of which carry the Vrn-D1a allele. Although maturity date of three alleles was same, the panicle development occurred earlier in the following order of genotype: Vrn-D1a > Vrn-D1b > vrn-D1. There was a significant difference in panicle development even between two winter type alleles vrn-D1 and Vrn-D1b. Grain yield and the spikelet number per spike of the original spring type cultivars were lower than those of the winter type NILs. In addition, while the young panicle development of the tillers in the spring type cultivars was found to be two weeks to one month later in the tillers than that in the main stem, young panicle development of the main stem and tillers in the winter type NILs were almost identical. Hence, winter type wheat bearing vrn-D1 which exhibit later panicle development than that bearing Vrn-D1b, was elucidated to might be more useful especially in areas with high risk of frost damage. This study conducted a dietary exposure assessment of chloropropanols and aluminium, after quantifying their content in food. The mean dietary exposure to Al from total grain products was found to be 6.4E–04 mg/kg bw/week, not exceeding the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI). The results showed that the mean dietary exposure of 3-monochloro-1,2-propanediol (3-MCPD) from grain products was higher than the tolerable daily intake (TDI). Deterministic evaluations showed that the mean HQ of 1.5 to Al from fried dough twist was higher than 1. However, the HI values to Al were lower than 1 and the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) showed that the HQ was greater than 1 at the 99% exposure level. Implementing compost can assist in improving soil structure and enable nutrient mobilization to plants that initiate an appropriate soil balance. In a greenhouse experiment, the influence of hazelnut husk compost (HHC), both in single and in combination with the phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) on the wheat yield, yield parameters, and soil biological properties were investigated. A significant increase in yield and its quality parameters was recorded when the soil was treated with different doses of compost and bacteria. It was observed copious improvements in the soil biological properties with these applications. The microbial biomass carbon and total organic carbon ratios (Cmic:Corg) ranged from 1.51 to 2.09, were also remarkable in the organic amended soils. However, in all the treatments, the co-inoculation of bacteria with compost enhanced all the parameters significantly more than their individual applications. The highest yield increase over control (22.12%) was recorded from the integrated application of organic source and bio-fertilizer. This reflects a synergistic relationship between the compost and bacteria that eventually enhanced wheat production. It is therefore concluded that using HHC and PSB in soil can unfold promising possibilities for better soil health, which in the long run can contribute to sustainable food production. AbstractAgronomic bio-fortification remains a crucial focus area for enhancing wheat productivity and quality while alleviating environmental pressures. Micronutrient deficiencies, particularly in iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), persist among the Indian population, especially affecting women. These deficiencies can be effectively addressed through agronomic bio-fortification of wheat grains. To tackle this issue, a comprehensive multilocation (4) field experiment was conducted, incorporating four high-yielding wheat cultivars (HD-3226, HI-1544, DBW-187, and PBW-1-Zn) alongside six foliar fertilizer applications (Control, 2% S, 2% N, 0.5% ZnSO4.7H2O, 1% KCl, and combined treatments) during 2021-22 and 2022-23 utilizing a split-plot design with three replications. Analysis over the years revealed that significant impacts of location and cultivar on yield and its attributes, and Fe, Zn, and protein content of grains. Warmer locations like Hisar exhibited higher yields primarily due to significantly increased earheads/m2 and grains number/m2 compared to other locations. Moreover, Fe content in wheat grains was notably higher in Gurdaspur followed by Hisar, surpassing Ludhiana. Notably, cultivar DBW-187 outperformed others with a 14.75% higher grain yield than the least yielding cultivar, HI-1544. PBW-1-Zn exhibited the highest grain Fe and Zn content among the cultivars studied. The interaction between cultivar and location significantly influenced all yield parameters and grain Fe content. Foliar spray of ZnSO4 (0.5%) during stem elongation and milk stages resulted in significantly higher grain Zn content compared to applications of KCl (1.0%), N (2.0%), and S (2.0%) alone, with an increase of 9.9% over no spray. In conclusion, the selection of appropriate cultivars tailored to specific regions, coupled with strategic agronomic bio-fortification approaches, is imperative for enhancing wheat productivity and grain quality, thereby ensuring nutritional security. AbstractCurrent agricultural production systems face challenges of poor economic returns, soil fatigue and negative environmental outcomes from excess use of nitrogenous fertilizers, especially in wheat production under middle gangetic plains. To overcome these challenges, the current study was conducted to optimize nitrogen management in different wheat genotypes with precision nitrogen management tools and approaches. The field experiment was laid out in split-plot design, with three genotypes assigned to the main plot and six nitrogen management practices to the sub-plot. The soil of the experimental field was sandy loam in texture, with low levels of organic carbon and available nitrogen, and medium levels of available phosphorus and potassium. Results revealed that the HD-2967 genotype outperformed others in terms of growth, grain yield (4.7 and 4.81 t ha−1), gross return (1417.41 and 1505.48 US$ ha−1), net return (953.43 and 1019.76 US$ ha−1), and B-C ratio (2.04 and 2.08) in 2015-16 and 2016-17, respectively. Among the nitrogen management practices, application of 150 kg N ha−1 in three equal splits demonstrated improved crop growth, grain yield (4.7 and 4.81 t ha−1), and economic returns (gross return, 1500.40 and 1607.65 US$ ha−1, net return, 1025.40 and 1110.38 US$ ha−1 and B: C ratio, 2.17 and 2.23) in 2015-16 and 2016-17, respectively. AbstractSoil acidity has negative effects on both plants and soil. Furthermore, liming is the most common and effective management practice used to neutralize the acid produced in the soil and the problems associated with soil acidification. The study evaluated whether liming impacts wheat growth, yield, nutritional status basis exchangeable, and their related soil acidity indices. A greenhouse experiment was performed under a completely randomized arrangement, with four lime application rates equivalent to (0, 4.0, 8.0, and 12.0 Mg ha−1). The results showed that all yield components significantly increased with increasing lime addition rate. The grain yield, shoot and root dry weight, and plant and spike height improved quadratically (R2 = 0.909, 0.950, 0.976, 0.902, and 0.891, respectively). Additionally, the lime rate influenced P and Mg concentrations in the shoot, and the concentrations of Cu and Zn. With increasing lime rate, the soil exchangeable Ca and Mg concentrations increased quadratically (R2 = 0.969 and 0.984), while the soil exchangeable K and Al concentrations decreased significantly. The pH of the soil solution increased linearly (R2 = 0.994) with the lime addition rate. Liming significantly reduced the exchangeable Al3+ and Al + H in the soil. Finally, liming improves wheat yield in acid soil by reducing the negative effects of Al and H by increasing soil pH, Ca2+, and Mg2+ concentration, consequently improving root growth and resulting in wheat yield. Liming increased the grain yield by 188.7, 198.2, and 322.8% following the increase of lime rate, if compared to the control. Combination of crop protectants is an important approach to increase insecticidal efficacy and reduce the application rates. In this study, the insecticidal efficacy of spinosad and seven monoterpenes, alone and in binary combinations, was evaluated against Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in stored wheat. Spinosad was tested at application rates of 0.1 and 0.5 mg/kg while monoterpenes were tested at 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 g/kg. Mortality of adults after 7, 14 and 21 days, progeny reduction after 45 and 90 days, and grain weight loss were recorded for all treatments. The results showed that the complete mortality (100.0%) of S. oryzae adults was observed in wheat treated with 0.5 mg/kg of spinosad + 2.0 g/kg of carvone or P-cymene or menthone after 21 days. At the same time, no progeny of S. oryzae was resulted in the combined treatments (0.5 mg/kg of spinosad + 2.0 g/kg of carvone or 0.5 mg/kg of spinosad + 2.0 g/kg of P-cymene) after 45 and 90 days. The same trends were observed for grains weight loss as the binary treatments at highest application rates preserved the wheat seeds free from damage caused by S. oryzae for 90 days. In this work, an effort has been made to show that a cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAPP) can be applied to promote the growth and development of wheat seedlings. A dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma-based reactor has been developed having two-roller conveyor rollers running on sprockets to generate cold plasma. Wheat seeds (Triticum aestivum) are treated with cold plasma for shorter durations to examine their germination parameters. In the cold plasma, reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) are generated which alter the surface of the seeds. This results in enhanced germination, growth, and enduring vitality of the plants enhance seed germination. After plasma treatment, the germination rate was enhanced from 84% to 98%. Also, after treatment surfaces of wheat seeds became more hydrophilic, as confirmed by a decrease in the water contact angle which results in higher seed germination. It is inferred that plasma is a viable alternative to the conventional pre-sowing seed treatment for germination due to its uniform treatment without degradation and the use of pesticides. In this article, we consider a measure of predictability of a random field following a stationary two-dimensionally indexed autoregressive moving-average (2-D ARMA). The purpose of this article is two-fold. First, we give a characterization of equal predictability processes by providing necessary and sufficient conditions, which highlight the role of the coefficients of the moving average (MA) and the equivalent autoregressive (EAR) representations. Lead and its compounds can have cumulative harmful effects on the nervous, cardiovascular, and other systems, and especially affect the brain development of children. We collected 4918 samples from 15 food categories in 11 districts of Guangzhou, China, from 2017 to 2022, to investigate the extent of lead contamination in commercial foods and assess the health risk from dietary lead intake of the residents. Lead was measured in the samples using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Dietary exposure to lead was calculated based on the food consumption survey of Guangzhou residents in 2011, and the health risk of the population was evaluated using the margin of exposure (MOE) method. Lead was detected in 76.5% of the overall samples, with an average lead content of 29.4 µg kg−1. The highest lead level was found in bivalves. The mean daily dietary lead intakes were as follows: 0.44, 0.34, 0.25, and 0.28 µg kg−1 body weight (bw) day−1 for groups aged 3–6, 7–17, 18–59, and ≥ 60 years, respectively. Rice and rice products, leafy vegetables, and wheat flour and wheat products were identified as the primary sources of dietary lead exposure, accounting for 73.1%. The MOE values demonstrated the following tendency: younger age groups had lower MOEs, and 95% confidence ranges for the groups aged 3–6 and 7–17 began at 0.6 and 0.7, respectively, indicating the potential health risk of children, while those for other age groups were all above 1.0. There are doubts about nitrogen (N) management and the use of growth regulator in wheat. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the wheat performance as a function of topdressing N applied at different phenological stages of crop, and the use of trinexapac-ethyl (TE) growth regulator associated with N fertilization in subtropical regions in southern Brazil. In each environment, two experiments were carried out, all with an experimental design in 2 × 4 factorial scheme. The factors in experiment 1 were topdressing N application at seedling emergence and tillering stages and N rates (0, 40, 80, and 120 kg N ha−1); and in experiment 2: use of TE (with and without) and N rates (0, 40, 80, and 120 kg N ha−1) applied at tillering. The augment of N in topdressing increases the lodging. The use of TE minimizes the lodging. In environment with irrigation, the application of intermediate N rates at crop emergence reduces lodging. The yield components are altered by the rates and stages of N application, with variable responses according to the cultivation environment. The stage of application does not affect grain yield. N fertilization increases the yield, being that in Ponta Grossa the wheat is more responsive to higher N input. In certain environments, TE reduces the number of spikes m−2 and increases the number of grains per spike. TE impairs yield when associated with N non-application in topdressing. This study was carried to investigate the quality of bread produced from blends of wheat–watermelon seed flour at varying proportions of 100% WF, 97.5% WF:2.5% WSF, 95.0% WF:5.0% WSF, 92.5% WF:7.5% WSF and 90.0% WF:10.0% WSF, respectively. Functional and pasting properties of the flour samples were determined. Proximate composition, color, vitamins, minerals, physical properties and sensory evaluation were also carried out on the bread samples using standard methods. The results showed that the bulk density, water absorption capacity, oil absorption capacity (OAC), swelling capacity, solubility, dispensability and foaming capacity were in the range 0.63–0.74%, 79.00–97.00%, 86.93–98.30%, 567.7–67.6%, 4.75–8.38%, 10.87–13.88% and 10.00–18.00%, respectively, for different composite flour samples. Proximate compositions for moisture, protein, fat, ash and carbohydrate content were in the range 10.03–10.99%, 2.13–12.89%, 2.47–7.68%, 1.69–3.82% and 65.31–72.83%, respectively, for bread samples from different composite flours. Minerals and vitamins in bread from wheat–watermelon seed composite flour decreased with increasing watermelon seed flour substitution level. The pasting properties of the wheat–watermelon seed composite flour samples ranged from 843.00 to 154.00 cp for peak viscosity, 1876 to 1191 cp for final viscosity, 369 to 77 cp for trough viscosity, 5.47 to 5.87 min. for pasting time and 84.70 to 91.85°C for pasting temperature. The colors for lightness (L*), redness (a*) and yellowness (b*) were in the range 7.65–13.50, 6.67–39.13 and 60.87–93.00, respectively. The wheat flour had the lowest specific loaf volume of 1.02 cm3/g. The sensory scores revealed that bread produced from samples 97.5WF:2.5WSF was the most preferred by the panelists and was also described by panelists as having excellent properties when compared to the control samples. Genetic resistance is the most economical and efficient way to reduce production losses brought on by diseases. Plant breeders continuously incorporate new, dependable sources into their breeding materials to continue developing disease-resistant genotypes. Fourteen certified wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar (Bahawalpur-2000, NIFA-Bathor08, Fareed-2006, Haider-2002, Imdad-2005, Lasani-2008, Marvi-2000, Moomal-2000, Manther-2003, Pirsabak-2006, Iqbal-2000, Pirsabak-2004, Shahkar-2013, and Wafaq-2002) seeds from the Nuclear Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA) and National Agriculture Research Center (NARC) were grown in pots. DNA obtained from fresh leaves of the wheat cultivars were screened for leaf rust resistance genes (i.e. Lr-51, Lr-47, Lr-46, Lr-37, Lr-36, Lr-35, Lr-34, Lr-28, Lr-25, Lr-19, Lr-13, Lr-9, and Lr-1 using PCR. Results showed that the Lr-47 gene was present in nine wheat cultivars, Lr-1 and Lr-28 in eight, Lr-5, Lr-9, and Lr-13 in three, and Lr-19 and Lr-37 in one cultivar. In the selected wheat cultivars, the resistance genes Lr-25, Lr-35, Lr-36, and Lr-46 were not observed. This study suggests cultivating wheat varieties Haider-2002, Iqbal-2000, Lasani-2008, Manther-2003, Pirsbak-2004, Pirsbak-2006, Shahkar-2013, and Wafaq-2002 for high level of resistance to rust and protection against high production losses. AbstractThis study investigated the responses of two wheat varieties, Alvand (Zn-inefficient) and Pishtaz (Zn-efficient), to various zinc (Zn) fertilization methods to determine optimal strategies for enhancing wheat growth and grain quality. The primary aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of various Zn fertilization strategies, including foliar applications of Zn sulfate and Zn-EDTA with and without urea, as well as synthetic Zn amino acid complexes, along with soil applications of Zn sulfate, on the yield and nutritional quality of grains in these two contrasting wheat varieties. The results revealed that wheat varieties responded differently to Zn treatments. While Alvand showed a promising trend of elevated grain yield with foliar zinc sulfate application, Pishtaz exhibited a stronger response to foliar treatments like Zn-Met and Zn-EDTA + urea. Yield components as 1000-grain weight and spike weight, were significantly influenced by Zn fertilization. Foliar application of zinc sulfate + urea enhanced 1000-grain weight in Alvand, whereas Zn-EDTA + urea substantially increased spike weight in Pishtaz. Soil application of zinc sulfate was found to be as an effective method to enhance grain Zn content. Furthermore, the Zn concentrations in flour, straw, bran, and roots elucidated the complex patterns of Zn distribution among various plant tissues. Soil applications were particularly effective in increasing Zn levels in flour and bran, while foliar treatments influenced Zn content in straw and roots. Overall, this research highlights the importance of Zn fertilization strategies for different wheat varieties biofortification. These findings can provide practical implications for sustainable wheat production, addressing Zn deficiency challenges, and advancing food security worldwide. AbstractIron and phosphorus deficiencies in alkaline soils threaten wheat by limiting nutrient availability due to their antagonistic relationship. This study tested if combining microbial incubation with foliar iron could synergistically improve wheat productivity and nutrition and mitigate deficiencies. A field experiment using a split plot design tested different iron and phosphate fertilization techniques. The main plots consisted of three iron application methods: foliar-applied iron (FL) at 2.5 kg ha−1, soil-applied iron (FS) at 5 kg ha−1, and no iron (F0). The subplots comprised four phosphate fertilizers: PSB + TSP (inoculation with phosphate-solubilizing bacteria + 100 kg ha−1 of triple superphosphate fertilizer), AMF + TSP (inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi + triple superphosphate), TSP alone, and no phosphorus (P0). Foliar iron application with AMF + TSP increased seed potassium and root length density by 16.3-17.9% and 22.1-25.8% more than PSB + TSP, respectively. Under FS conditions, AMF + TSP exhibited 28.5-29.1% lower magnesium and 23.9-28.4% higher zinc seed concentrations compared to PSB + TSP, as well as higher levels of soluble proteins and lower concentrations of chlorophyll. There was no difference in grain yield between PSB + TSP and AMF + TSP for any of the iron treatments. Combining AMF + TSP and foliar iron application resulted in the highest grain yield, desirable seed nutrient content (particularly zinc, iron (>100 mg kg−1), and magnesium (>18 mg kg−1), improved root biomass, chlorophyll, and soluble proteins compared to PSB + TSP and TSP alone. This combination of microbial inoculation with foliar iron application is an effective strategy for mitigating the antagonism between iron and phosphorus and improving both crop productivity and nutrition. AbstractFusarium graminearum is the most important pathogen of maize and winter wheat in Canada, resulting in yield loss and mycotoxin contamination. Fungicides are essential to manage F. graminearum in cereal crops. Until pydiflumetofen became commercial, the only available fungicides were triazoles, limiting the potential to manage fungicide resistance. Fusarium graminearum isolates were surveyed from wheat, grain maize and overwintering maize stalks in southern Ontario. Chemotype and the baseline sensitivity to pydiflumetofen were determined in addition to sensitivity to common fungicides used to control F. graminearum. Fusarium graminearum has several strains producing different trichothecenes called chemotypes. In Ontario, 73.3% of the F. graminearum isolates were 3ANX chemotypes producing 7α-hydroxy, 15-deacetylcalonectrin, in addition to 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol and deoxynivalenol; the remaining isolates were 15ADON chemotypes producing only 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol and deoxynivalenol. Chemotype was not affected by isolate source (wheat grain, maize grain, maize stalks) nor by location. All isolates were sensitive to pydiflumetofen and fungicide products containing pydiflumetofen. The mean EC50 for isolates exposed to pydiflumetofen was 0.05 µg mL−1 (range 0.01–0.10 µg mL−1). The mean EC50 for isolates exposed to Miravis®Ace (containing pydiflumetofen and propiconazole), Miravis®Neo 300SE (containing pydiflumetofen, azoxystrobin and propiconazole), Caramba® (containing metconazole), Proline® (containing prothioconazole) and Prosaro (containing prothioconazole and tebuconazole) was 0.06, 0.13, 0.18, 0.05, 3.75 and 0.30 µg mL−1, respectively. AbstractWheat stripe rust disease caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst) seriously affects wheat yield. We studied the fungal infection process and host response between wheat ‘AvS’ and its near-isogenic line ‘AvS+Yr10’, which formed compatible and incompatible interactions, respectively, when challenged with Pst race CYR32. The difference in reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation between the compatible and incompatible interactions was analyzed by measuring the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration and observing H2O2 production. Hydrogen peroxide concentrations, H2O2 accumulation areas, necrotic areas and expression of several resistance-related genes in the AvS+Yr10/CYR32 interaction were higher than those in the AvS/CYR32 interaction during the entire infection process. The rice-wheat cropping system is the largest cereal-based agricultural production system in India. It provides considerable significance to national food, nutrition, and livelihood security. However, the extensive use of resources under rice-wheat system has resulted in significant issues, including a decline in groundwater levels, indiscriminate use of fertilizers, the burning of rice residues, increased emissions of greenhouse gases, and the development of herbicide-resistant weeds which led to stagnant crop productivity and reduced profitability. This study was conducted at the research farm of ICAR-IIWBR, Karnal, India, to evaluate the combined effects of conventional and nano urea on productivity, profitability, and efficient nitrogen management strategy in wheat under rice-wheat system. The study evaluated eight treatment combinations of nitrogen application through conventionally applied urea (46% N) and foliar applied nano urea (4% N). The results of the study showed that the application of 150 kg N/ha in three equal splits as basal and just before 1st and 2nd irrigation, either alone (T2) or along with a spray of nano urea (T5), resulted in the highest grain yield and profitability. Top dressing of urea just before irrigation with a dose of nitrogen 150 kg/ha applied in three equal splits (T2) resulted in 420 kg/ha additional grain yield over top dressing at 7-10 days after irrigation with same dose (T3). Treatment T5 recorded the highest gross and net returns with 2492.5 and 1804.0 US $/ha. The study's findings suggest that efficient nitrogen management is essential for sustainable wheat production in India. Improving nutrient use efficiency and system productivity with a positive nutrient balance in rice-wheat cropping system (RWCS) is vital for long-term food security. Two-year field trials were conducted with the objective of computing the effect of different rates, time, method, and source of potassium (K) fertilization on nutrient recovery efficiency, nutrient balance, and system productivity in a dry direct-seeded RWCS with eight treatments. The two-split (half basal and half at panicle initiation) application of 60 kg K2O/ha resulted in 37.5% and 19.2% increase in recovery efficiency of K in rice and wheat, respectively over basal application of 60 kg K2O/ha. Besides, the split-application of K increased the nitrogen recovery efficiency in rice and wheat by 11.2% and 10.8%, respectively. Similarly, the phosphorus recovery efficiency was increased by 3.6% and 7.4% in rice and wheat, respectively. The split application of 60 kg K2O/ha also increased the K harvest index (% of the total K absorbed is transferred to grain) by 0.7% and 2.7% in rice and wheat, respectively over applying entire K at basal. Similarly, the system productivity (11.26 t/ha) was increased by 8% over applying entire K at basal. In the absence of top-dressing of K (30 kg/ha), two foliar-sprays of 2.5% K provide equal benefits of top dressing. Application of 90 kg K2O/ha lowered the K negative balance (−99 kg/ha/year) considerably compared to two-split application of 60 kg K2O/ha (−152.5 kg/ha/year). Isotope source tracing enables to accurately determine the fate of nutrients that are applied with fertilizers to soils. While this approach is well established for major nutrients such as nitrogen, it is not yet established for trace metals. Here, we aimed to determine the fate of the micronutrient zinc (Zn) and the contaminant cadmium (Cd) that were applied with an organic fertilizer to a soil–wheat system. A pot study was conducted in which wheat was grown on an alkaline soil. The soils received green manure and/or soluble Zn fertilizer and were compared with non-fertilized control treatments (n = 4 experimental replicates). The green manure was labelled with the stable isotopes 67Zn and 111Cd. For an efficient sample throughput, a method was provided and validated to determine enriched stable isotope ratios (67Zn:66Zn and 111Cd:110Cd) and the Zn and Cd concentrations in one analytical run. To this end, single collector ICP-MS analyses and stable isotope mass balances calculations were combined. Applying this method revealed that the addition of green manure increased neither Zn nor Cd concentrations in wheat grains due to biomass dilution effects. Isotope source tracing showed that the largest fraction of these metals in the wheat shoots derived from the soil in all treatments (Zn 87–99 %, Cd 94–98 %). Moreover, the addition of green manure increased the transfer of Zn and Cd from soil to wheat by a factor 1.9 for both elements. This increased transfer was likely related to a nitrogen fertilization effect that increased root and shoot biomass and thereby the soil exploration of the wheat. Sulfoxaflor is a systemic sulfoximine insecticide, used to control sucking pests in different agricultural crops including wheat. However, the information regarding its residual fate in wheat agroecosystem under tropical environment and the associated dietary risk are still obscure. Therefore, a supervised field experiment was conducted in wheat comprising the application of sulfoxaflor 12% (w/v) SC at 30 and 60 g a.i. ha−1 in two consecutive seasons. The extracting solvent ethyl acetate + cyclohexane (9 + 1 v/v) along with the clean-up combinations viz. 75 mg PSA+25 mg GCB+150 mg magnesium sulphate for wheat plant and straw and 75 mg PSA+75 mg C18 + 150 mg magnesium sulphate for grain produced satisfactory recovery, minimum matrix interference and optimum peak shape. The average recovery, repeatability and within-laboratory reproducibility of sulfoxaflor in wheat substrates ranged between 90.66% and 103.55%, 2.67–5.17% and 3.05–8.15%, respectively, and the limit of quantification was estimated 0.01 mg kg−1. Sulfoxaflor was stable up to 60 days in wheat matrices under storage (−20°C). The dissipation of sulfoxaflor in wheat plants followed first-order kinetics and the overall shorter persistence in Season I and II ranged between 1.05–1.14 and 2.44–2.47 days (T1 – T2), respectively. The deviation in the persistence of the compound between two seasons due to variation in climatic parameters was observed to be statistically significant. The estimated pre-harvest interval of sulfoxaflor ranged between 4.95–5.34 (Season I) and 11.37–11.55 days (Season II). Besides, the terminal residues of sulfoxaflor were below quantification limit in the harvested wheat products, and the estimated long-term dietary risk of sulfoxaflor was observed to be negligible. Therefore, it was expected that the application of this insecticide in wheat cultivation should pose no residual toxicity and the harvested wheat products can be considered safe for human consumption. Thiamethoxam, a systemic neonicotinoid insecticide, is widely accepted for use against various chewing and sucking insect pests. In this particular study, the authors examined the dissipation kinetics and metabolism of thiamethoxam in wheat using quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe (QuEChERS) methodology combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) over two years during the same cropping season. Residues of thiamethoxam and its metabolites in wheat plants were investigated following foliar spray of thiamethoxam at recommended dose (12.5 g a.i. ha−1) and four times the recommended dose (50.0 g a.i. ha−1) at earhead formation stage. Total residues of thiamethoxam and its metabolites in leaves at 0 day (2 h after spray) ranged from 3.69 to 14.36 mg kg−1 for the two doses over the two years. Clothianidin was the only metabolite detected in leaves at 0 day (2 h after spray); however at 7 days after spray nitroguanidine, N-desmethyl-thiamethoxam and 1-methyl-3-nitroguanidine were also detected. Total residues of thiamethoxam and its metabolites in soil at 0 day (2 h after spray) ranged from 0.23 to 0.84 mg kg−1. Thiamethoxam residue in leaves and soil followed first order kinetics with half-life ranging from 9.04 to 15.50 days for the two doses over the two study years. Residues of thiamethoxam and its metabolites in leaves, straw and grain at harvest time for both the doses were below their limit of quantification (0.01 mg kg−1). Acidophilic sulfur and iron oxidizing bacteria, such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans, play a crucial role in releasing nutrients into the soil. This study utilized a mixture of these bacteria to solubilize phosphorus from phosphate rock. Acidophilic bacteria were enriched from soil samples taken from the collection pond of a coal heap constructed for biodesulfurization studies. Rock phosphate sample was supplemented with elemental sulfur (So) and pyrite (FeS2) as energy substrates for bioleaching of phosphorus. The effect of different pulp densities of the rock phosphate on biosolubilization of phosphorus elucidated that the pulp density and rock phosphate solubilization are negatively correlated. The mixture of acidophilic microorganisms solubilized 40.76% P2O5 at 10 g/L pulp density during 30 days of leaching. A comparative study showed that a two-step process is more effective for the phosphorus leaching from rock phosphate. In pot experiments under net house conditions, the acidophilic bacterial composite increased wheat grain yield by 2% and seed phosphorus content by 3%, while reducing the need for DAP fertilizer by 20%. Treating soil with BOP (a combination of phosphate rock and acidophilic bacteria) proves to be an efficient method for converting frugally soluble phosphorus compounds into readily available forms for plants. In this study, the effects of the potential application of digestate as an agricultural fertiliser obtained from anaerobically digested microalgae treated by three pretreatment methods, namely alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP), high temperature and pressure (HTP), and hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) on some properties of soil, and wheat growth and yield were investigated. For this purpose, pretreated and anaerobically digested microalgae digestates alone or together with diammonium phosphate (DAP) as a chemical fertiliser were applied to soil for wheat growth. The highest dosage of AHP pretreated digestate combined with a half dose of DAP applied to soil was rich in nutrients as 0.25%N and 7.19 mg kg−1 compared to all groups. The properties of the soils were enhanced by applying the highest dosage (0.06 g kg−1) of microalgae digestate combined with a half dose of DAP. 0.02 g kg−1 dosage of HC pretreated digestate combined with a half dose of DAP also greatly improved nitrogen use efficiency indices by up to 104%. The soils' enzyme activities increased in wheat growth experiments by applying either raw or pretreated microalgae digestates. The soils' β-glycosidase, alkaline phosphatase, and urease enzyme activities increased to 1.38 mg pNP g−1 soil, 4.91 mg pNP g−1 soil, and 2.27 mg NH4-N 100 g−1 soil respectively by the application of highest dosage of HC pretreated digestate. The digestates did not have a toxic effect on wheat growth, it was determined that applied pretreatment processes did not cause significant changes in wheat plant height or wet and dry weight. Establishing lucerne (Medicago sativa) in dryland conditions poses challenges due to unpredictable rainy seasons and seedling vulnerability. A potential solution is adopting a nurse crop during the first year in the same field. This study aimed to assess the impact of wheat as a nurse crop and crop residue on lucerne establishment in South Africa's Mediterranean climate region. The experiment employed a split-plot design with two treatment factors across six blocks. Half of the area received wheat straw, while the rest had low residue content with almost bare soil. The nurse crop combinations included wheat alone, lucerne alone, and a wheat-lucerne mixture. Results revealed competition between wheat and lucerne when planted together. When plant populations, total biomass, wheat grain yield and grain quality were considered, wheat performed better in pure stands, as did lucerne when grown without wheat. Germination of lucerne was significantly impacted by high crop residue levels. Wheat achieved superior grain yield without crop residue, despite producing less biomass. AbstractStem rust of barley and wheat is caused by the obligate pathogen Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt) and stem rust of oat is caused by P. graminis f. sp. avenae (Pga). Stem rust can be a very destructive disease of cereal crops and, until the development of resistant host varieties, was responsible for millions of dollars of losses to producers. Genetic host resistance is the most common and effective method to control stem rust on cereals. Knowledge of the virulence genes and races present in the pathogen population is important to identify effective host resistance genes for use by cereal plant breeders. The objectives of this study were to determine the incidence and severity of P. graminis in wheat, barley and oat in Manitoba, Canada, and assess the virulence frequencies and races of isolates collected from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario, Canada during 2020 to 2022. Stem rust incidence and severity was very light in Manitoba in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Virulence was not observed on resistance genes Sr30, Sr24 and Sr31 from Canadian collections of Pgt isolates made during 2020 to 2022. Race QFCSC was the most common race of Pgt in Canada, and races MCCFC and TPMKC were also common in Manitoba in 2022. Virulence to resistance genes Pg6, Pg10 and Pg16 was not observed among Pga isolates. The most common race of Pga from Manitoba and Saskatchewan was TGN, followed by SGB and TJS. This study aimed to assess the nutritional status of soybean and wheat and the relationship with grain yield and biometric components after lime and phosphogypsum (GY) reapplication. Treatments consisted of two lime application methods, surface liming and incorporated liming, to different levels of base saturation (BS) (44, 70, and 90%), in addition to surface liming to 70% BS associated with a standard dose (70GY1) or double dose (70GY2) of GY. Treatments were applied in 2012 and reapplied in 2016. The results refer to the 2018/2019 soybean season and the 2019 wheat season. Lime + GY treatment increased leaf area, plant height, leaf dry matter, and stem dry matter in soybean but had no effect on specific leaf area (235.4 cm2 g−1), stem diameter (6.08 mm), number of pods per plant (71.7), grain number per plant (165), or thousand grain weight (117 g). Liming to 90% BS reduced leaf manganese contents in both crops and leaf iron content in soybean. GY application improved the calcium status of both crops and the sulfur status of soybean. However, 70GY2 reduced leaf magnesium contents in soybean and wheat. Soil tillage without lime reduced wheat yield by 12% compared with no-till. Soybean yield correlated positively with leaf nitrogen (0.79), leaf phosphorus (0.91), leaf area (0.62), and thousand grain weight (0.65), whereas wheat yield correlated with leaf phosphorus (0.83), calcium (0.75), and sulfur (0.74). AbstractThe number of food safety issues linked to wheat milled products have increased in the past decade. These incidents were mainly caused by the contamination of wheat-based products by enteric pathogens. This manuscript is the first of a two-part review on the status of the food safety of wheat-based products. This manuscript focused on reviewing the available information on the potential pre-harvest and post-harvest sources of microbial contamination, and potential foodborne pathogens present in wheat-based products. Potential pre-harvest sources of microbial contamination in wheat included animal activity, water, soil, and manure. Improper grain storage practices, pest activity, and improperly cleaned and sanitized equipment are potential sources of post-harvest microbial contamination for wheat-based foods. Raw wheat flour products and flour-based products are potentially contaminated with enteric pathogens such as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STECs), and Salmonella at low concentrations. Wheat grains and their derived products (i.e., flours) are potential vehicles for foodborne illness in humans due to the presence of enteric pathogens. A more holistic approach is needed for assuring the food safety of wheat-based products in the farm-to-table continuum. Crop residues are the main organic source of nutrients in agricultural soils. The active pool of soil organic carbon plays a dominant role in crop production and soil health. Rice and wheat residues were used in 90 days incubation study under controlled conditions (25°C temperature and maximum water-holding capacity) to estimate the release of carbon dioxide and water-soluble carbon in an Indo-Gangetic alluvial soil (Inceptisols) of Varanasi. The experiment was laid out in a factorial completely randomized design with three replications. The rice and wheat residues showed a wide variation in the content of their total carbon (TC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and total sulfur (TS). Out of the two crop residues added to the soil, rice residue had higher carbon dioxide-carbon (CO2-C) release than that of the wheat residue over control. Results revealed that conjunctive application of rice residue along with urea (20 kg N ha−1) and Trichoderma viride (10 kg ha−1) had resulted in a higher content of CO2-C (7.44 mg per 100 g per day) at 90 days of the incubation period. The amount of CO2 (mg) released, increases with a combination of crop residues with urea (20 kg N ha−1) and Trichoderma viride (10 kg ha−1) up to 90 days over control. The highest release of CO2 (204.70 mg) was recorded with rice residue treated with urea (20 kg N ha−1) and Trichoderma viride (10 kg ha−1). The study also revealed that the release of water-soluble carbon decreases with an increase in the incubation period irrespective of treatment. At 90 days of the incubation period, the control without any crop residue addition has the highest water-soluble carbon content (459.75 µg/g). The present study indicates that the incorporation of rice and wheat residues along with urea and supplemental decomposers (Trichoderma viride) has the potential to release adequately active organic carbon pool parameters such as CO2 and water-soluble carbon in an Inceptisols of Varanasi region of India. Zinc (Zn) deficiency in soil is a serious constraint affecting the yield and nutritional quality of wheat and, in turn, human health. Zn fertilization for enhancing its density in grains is a prominent technological solution for the problem. Accordingly, the present study (pot experiment) was undertaken to (i) assess the impacts of different Zn fertilization technologies on yield, concentrations of Zn, phytic acid (PA), iron (Fe) and also the bioavailability of Zn in grains and (ii) determine the optimised Zn fertilization technology that balances all the above attributes. To achieve this, six Zn fertilization technologies, namely, soil fertilization alone, combined soil and foliar fertilization at maximum tillering, jointing, flowering, dough stages and also foliar fertilization alone were tested and compared with control (no Zn) in forty different soil series representing two distinct soil orders, Inceptisols and Alfisols. Results showed that relative effectiveness of different Zn fertilization technologies varied for the crop attributes studied. Soil + foliar fertilization was superior in increasing grain yield (10–13% over the control). Moreover, for an optimum balance among all the tested attributes including bioavailability of Zn to human, foliar Zn fertilization at later crop growth stage (i.e. dough) combined with soil fertilization was the best. It was found that biofortified wheat grains obtained through Zn fertilization, on an average, could supply about 1.5 times more bioavailable Zn than the normal grains. This study (pot experiment) investigated and compared the effectiveness of Se(VI) and Se(IV) application at a rate of 1.25 mg Se kg−1 soil on growth, physiology, yield and As uptake by spring wheat on an uncontaminated and As-contaminated (1.5 mg kg−1) soil. Selenate improved wheat grain yield, relative water contents, membrane stability index, total chlorophylls, and antioxidant activities up to 43%, 18.6%, 9.5%, 16.4% and 15–46%, respectively, compared to control under As-contaminated soil. As compared to Se(IV), in accordance with above results, Se(VI) application resulted in 5-fold higher grain Se concentration and 4.4-fold higher grain Se uptake, which are partially explained by 1.3-fold higher root to grain Se translocation factor in Se(VI)-fed plants under As-contaminated soil. Concomitantly, Se(VI) offered a stronger competitive effect on As uptake thereby reducing its concentration in grains by 11% and in shoots by 44%. Translocation factor of As from root to shoots and to grains was 33% and 14.2%, respectively lesser in Se(VI)-fed plants. Thus, it is concluded that Se(VI) application, through its beneficial effects on root morphological traits, improvement in antioxidant activity and physiological behavior, is highly effective in reducing As toxicity on yield and As accumulation in wheat grains. Fusarium head blight (FHB) is primarily caused by Fusarium graminearum and is the most destructive wheat disease in western Canada. The trichothecene toxin deoxynivalenol (DON) and its derivatives 3-ADON and 15-ADON, which are produced by Fusarium, are toxic to humans and livestock. This study aimed to evaluate the Fusarium species and trichothecene-producing genotypes present in producer wheat fields of western Canada in 2019 and 2020. The grain analysis for DON showed that samples collected from both years experienced mild levels of FHB toxin contamination. In spring wheat, the highest mean DON content was recorded from Saskatchewan samples (0.9 ppm) in 2019 and Manitoba samples (0.3 ppm) in 2020. Winter wheat samples had lesser mean DON levels (<0.2 ppm) for all three provinces in both years. The chaff collected from the same spring wheat heads showed a significantly higher DON content than the grain in both years (P < 0.1 for 2019 and P < 0.001 for 2020), suggesting that chaff should be tested for DON before use as livestock feed. Most samples collected were infected by F. graminearum, with the highest F. graminearum percentage observed in the spring wheat from Manitoba. Further, F. avenaceum, F. sporotrichoides, F. culmorum, F. poae and F. acuminatum were found in infected samples. Most of the F. graminearum isolates were of the 3ADON genotype, which is the dominant genotype in FHB disease in western Canada. Sustainable wheat production and higher genetic gains can be realized by broadening the genetic base and improving the well adapted varieties. In the present study, a multi-year experiment involving induced mutagenesis was conducted to create genetic variation, assess trait associations and genetic divergence in four wheat varieties with differential grain texture treated with six doses of gamma rays and ethyl methane sulfonate using ten agro-morphological traits. Healthy selfed seeds of four bread wheat varieties with differential texture were irradiated using six doses ranging from 175 Gy-300 Gy of gamma rays (Co60: BARC, Mumbai) and six concentrations of ethyl methanesulfonate (0.3–1.3%) (Sigma-Aldrich, Bangalore, India) to evaluate variability, character association and degree of genetic diversity induced among the mutagenic treatments of wheat varieties with differential grain texture. Significant inter-population differences were observed for almost all the traits. The sample mean of twelve mutant populations in each of the cultivar exhibited superior quantitative phenotypic traits and increased values of the genetic parameters. Based on association and variability studies, plant height, spike length, grain filling period, biological yield per plant and harvest index can be used as early generation criteria for maximum genetic improvement. Multivariate studies indicated the contribution of various traits towards divergence and indicated the efficiency of mutagens in generating variability. Gamma-irradiation dosages between 200–250 Gy and 0.5–1.1% EMS for soft-textured varieties, whereas doses between 225–275 Gy and 0.5–0.9% EMS were found to be most potent for semi-hard-textured varieties. Assessment of mutagen sensitivity showed that semi-hard wheat varieties were responsive to both mutagens, particularly EMS and generated higher variability and divergence than the soft textured varieties. Hence, gamma rays were proved to be more effective in generating higher variability than ethyl methanesulfonate. A total of 117 putative mutants were identified with desirable agro-morphological attributes. Among these, mutants with higher inter-cluster distance can be used as parents in hybridization programs and serve as important genetic resources in future wheat improvement programs. Ear count serves as a crucial parameter for estimating wheat yield, holding great significance in crop phenotypic parameter calculations, yield predictions and wheat ear density management. To accurately determine the number of wheat ears, this study utilized the Global Wheat Head Detection 2021 dataset, and introduced a wheat ear counting method based on the improved YOLOX model. An attention mechanism was integrated into the feature extraction network to bolster the semantic information of the feature map. This enhancement aimed to improve the capability of effectively detecting wheat ears. By using GIoU loss to optimize the loss function, the positioning accuracy of bounding box was improved. Experimental results show that, compared with other models, the improved YOLOX model has significantly improved the detection effect of different targets. Among them, the precision of the improved YOLOX model is 97.24%, the average precision is 94.15%, the accuracy is 99.76%, and the log average miss detection rate is 0.25.
