The objectives of the study were: 1) Describe the thematic structure and evolution of the field of physical therapy; 2) identify the main research producers (i.e. countries and institutions); and 3) compare their research output and citation impact. Papers related to physical therapy indexed in Web of Science (2000–2018) were identified to delineate the field, using keywords, journals, and citation networks. VOSviewer software, advanced bibliometric text mining, and visualization techniques were used to evaluate the thematic structure. We collected data about the country and institutional affiliation of all the authors and calculated production and citation impact indicators. 85,697 papers were analyzed. Eleven thematic clusters were identified: 1) "health care and education"; 2) "biomechanics"; 3) "psychosocial, chronic pain and quality of life outcomes"; 4) "evidence-based physical therapy research methods"; 5) "traumatology and orthopedics"; 6) "neurological rehabilitation"; 7) "psychometrics and cross-cultural adaptation"; 8) "gait-balance analysis and Parkinson's disease"; 9) "exercise"; 10) "respiratory physical therapy"; and 11) "back pain." The United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia were the most productive countries. Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden had the highest citation impact. Our bibliometric visualization approach makes it possible to comprehensively study the thematic structure of physical therapy. The ranking of producers has evolved and now includes China and Brazil. This paper examines the influence of individual and household factors on an individual's propensity to emigrate from Halland, a region in south-west Sweden, to the United States during the era of mass migration in the late nineteenth century. The study has a case-control design, using individual-level longitudinal data for a group of emigrants (cases) and a group of non-emigrants (controls). Results indicate the importance of a family's emigration history; individuals whose relatives had previously moved to the United States were more likely to emigrate themselves. In addition, the results also show how this impact varied between groups and how other factors relating to the individual's life situation affected the migration decision. Objective: To evaluate beliefs, and attitudes about health of refugees with chronic conditions such as diabetes mellitus type 2, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and posttraumatic stress disorder and the consequent effects on self-care in comparison to resident populations. Design: A systematic review methodology was used. PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO and CINAHL databases were searched for relevant articles. The main terms analysed were health beliefs, chronic conditions and refugee populations. From 844 articles, 45 were retained for further assessment, and finally 5 met the inclusion criteria. Results: Differences in the health beliefs, attitudes and self-care management approaches of refugees compared to resident populations were identified in two studies. The remaining three papers did not make comparisons between the refugees and the resident population, nor did they specifically explore the refugees' health beliefs. Of the five studies, three were carried out in Sweden and two in the US. Refugees who have poorer mental and physical health as well as higher prevalence of chronic diseases than the populations among which they resettle seem to lack the knowledge about their illness, symptoms and self-management and thus are less able to control their chronic conditions. Conclusion: The findings highlighted the deficiency in the literature of studies which examine health beliefs and attitudes of minority groups such as refugees who have chronic conditions. The findings also gave insight to the need for a distinctive understanding of refugee health and the management of chronic conditions in comparison to other non-refugee migrant groups. The intention of this paper is to analyse why people go to war, despite the, at first sight, divergence between benefits and costs. This paper provides a comparison of the willingness to go to war in different OECD countries using World Values Survey data. The empirical findings in the United States, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden and West Germany, using the willingness to fight as a dependent variable, indicate that such factors as pride, trust, and political ideology significantly influence individuals' willingness to go to war. This paper compares recent developments in income inequality in Canada, Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In addition to describing cross-national variation in changes in income inequality, the paper examines different explanatory factors for these recent developments. The findings reported indicate that there is substantial cross-national variation, not only with regard to the level of inequality, but furthermore with regard to changes in inequality. The results indicate that the equalizing effect of welfare state redistribution did not decrease in all countries. By contrast, in all countries there was a universal tendency towards increased inequality in the pre-tax and transfer distribution, although the magnitude of the change differs from country to country. Even though a polarization of the earnings distribution is reported, the results still give no support to cross-national convergence with regard to income inequality during the 1980s. In two earlier studies, experienced upper secondary theatre students in Sweden (Østerlind, 2011) and the US (McCammon, 2010) completed the same questionnaire about their experiences with theatre. The questionnaire included questions about the number of years involved in theatre, reasons for choosing theatre study, activities participated in, favorite memories, biggest challenges and future benefits. This paper provides a comparison of the responses in the two sites to these questions: Why do secondary school students choose and stay with drama/theatre studies? According to the students themselves, what do they learn in theatre and how do they benefit from their study? What similarities and/or differences might there be between experienced secondary theatre students in Tucson, Arizona and Stockholm, Sweden? Responses suggested remarkable agreement between the two sites and grouped around four themes — theatre creates fellowship and fun; theatre develops the person; development of specific theatre skills; and development of life competencies. The right to request flexible working has previously been described as 'sound-bite' legislation. While it appeared to be a novel and innovative right, in reality it offered little of substance for the majority of working families. The more recent Additional Paternity Leave Regulations 2010 could possibly be classified in the same way. These Regulations aim to bring about a change in the landscape of UK work-family rights. However, like the rights to request flexible working, it can be questioned whether or not they will offer anything more to working families. This paper examines the likely impact that the legislation will have using Fineman's understanding of family care, drawing comparisons with the different approaches adopted in Sweden and the US. As distributed work begins to shift the nature of practice for technical communication professionals in the workplace, faculty need new frameworks to help prepare students for roles that involve negotiating, supporting, and facilitating virtual global collaboration. This paper identifies key areas of metaknowledge appropriate to these new frameworks by synthesizing a review of current scholarship on such collaborations and a case study of students participating in a cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural team project. This paper develops a framework for analyzing intellectuals as an emergent social category. It applies a model of the intellectual drawing on a range of studies to show how history and culture affect the very idea of the intellectual, as well as the possibilities of intellectual practice. The central argument is that any understanding of intellectuals should begin by situating the concept and the category it represents in context -- historical, political and cultural. Comparative analysis is especially suited to this task, because it allows one to map similarities and differences across historical political cultures. The first part of the article deals with the historical emergence of the concept of the intellectual itself: the second part applies this concept more specifically to Sweden and the United States. The author examines the ways in which civil society is shaped by the state through economic and legislative restraints and privileges. It has been asserted in one paper that civil society in the U.S. is conditioned in ways that tend to favour charities over political advocacy groups, since the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax code reserves the most favourable treatment for a type of civil society organization called the 501(c)(3) organization.
