Objective To explore women's perceptions of the risks and benefits associated with medication use during pregnancy and to better understand how women make decisions related to medication use in pregnancy. Methods We conducted online focus groups with 48 women who used medication during pregnancy or while planning a pregnancy, and 12 in-depth follow-up interviews with a subset of these women. Results We found that women were aware of general risks associated with medication use but were often unable to articulate specific negative outcomes. Women were concerned most about medications' impact on fetal development but were also concerned about how either continuing or discontinuing medication during pregnancy could affect their own health. Women indicated that if the risk of a given medication were unknown, they would not take that medication during pregnancy. Conclusion This formative research found that women face difficult decisions about medication use during pregnancy and need specific information to help them make decisions. Enhanced communication between patients and their providers regarding medication use would help address this need. We suggest that public health practitioners develop messages to (1) encourage, remind, and prompt women to proactively talk with their healthcare providers about the risks of taking, not taking, stopping, or altering the dosage of a medication while trying to become pregnant and/or while pregnant; and (2) encourage all women of childbearing age to ask their healthcare providers about medication use., Author(s): Molly M. Background: Achalasia is an uncommon illness affecting 1 per 100,000 patients a year. It encompasses a rare, primary motor disorder of the distal esophagus., Methods: Over the period 1998-2006, 115 patients underwent various treatments for achalasia; the subgroup of seniors consisted of 26 patients. Six patients of these (age 69.7 y) underwent a modified Heller cardiomyotomy due to failure of previous endoscopic interventions. Standard esophageal manometry and 24 hour pH metry were performed pre- and postoperatively., Results: Six senior patients with achalasia underwent a laparoscopic Heller myotomy. Average preoperative tonus of the LES was 55 mmHg, postoperative tonus of the LES decreased to 11 mmHg. We performed Toupet partial fundoplication in all patients; no microperforation of the esophagus was found in the preoperative esophagoscopy. We recorded minimal pathological gastroesophageal reflux in pH metry - the average preoperative DeMeester score was 8, postoperatively 10.5. Prolonged dysphagia was not present in any patient--preoperative GIQLI score was 94, postoperative score was 106. There was no mortality or morbidity in the group of the operated patients., Conclusion: Our operational results and postoperative follow-up show that laparoscopic Heller myotomy with Toupet partial fundoplication is a safe and effective treatment and can be recommended as the method of first choice for senior patients with no contraindication for laparoscopic operation.

The immune system serves as a fundamental defender against the initiation and progression of cancer. Failure of the immune system augments immunosuppressive action that leading to cancer manifestation. This immunosuppressive effect causes from significant alterations in immune checkpoint expression associated with tumoral progression. The tumor microenvironment promotes immune escape mechanisms that further amplifying immunosuppressive actions. Notably, substantial targeting of immune checkpoints has been pragmatic in the advancement of cancer research. This study highlights a comprehensive review of emerging druggable targets aimed at modulating immune checkpoint co-inhibitory as well as co-stimulatory molecules in response to immune system activation. This modulation has prompted to the development of newer therapeutic insights, eventually inducing immunogenic cell death through immunomodulatory actions. Background: Breast cancer (BC) exhibits remarkable heterogeneity. However, the transcriptomic heterogeneity of BC at the single-cell level has not been fully elucidated., Methods: We acquired BC samples from 14 patients. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), bioinformatic analyses, along with immunohistochemistry (IHC) and immunofluorescence (IF) assays were carried out., Results: According to the scRNA-seq results, 10 different cell types were identified. We found that Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts (CAFs) exhibited distinct biological functions and may promote resistance to therapy. Metabolic analysis of tumor cells revealed heterogeneity in glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, and fatty acid synthetase reprogramming, which led to chemotherapy resistance. Furthermore, patients with multiple metastases and progression were predicted to benefit from immunotherapy based on a heterogeneity analysis of T cells and tumor cells., Conclusions: Our findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the heterogeneity of BC, provide comprehensive insight into the correlation between cancer metabolism and chemotherapy resistance, and enable the prediction of immunotherapy responses based on T-cell heterogeneity., (© 2024. Purpose: Next-generation sequencing (NGS) tools have clinical advantages over blood culture but are more expensive. This study assesses the budget impact and break-even point of NGS testing costs from a healthcare provider's perspective in Germany., Methods: The budget impact was calculated based on aggregated data of German post-operative surgery cases. Simulated cost savings were calculated based on a simulated reduction in hospital length of stay (LOS) of four or eight days with a positivity rate of 71% and compared to the costs of one (scenario A) or two tests (scenario B) per case. Furthermore, the break-even point of the cost of two tests compared to saved costs through shortened LOS was conducted., Results: For 9,450 cases, an average budget impact for scenario A and scenario B of €1,290.41 [95% CI €1,119.64 - €1,461.19] and - €208.59 [95% CI - €379.36 - - €37.81] was identified for gastrointestinal and kidney surgery cases, and €1,355.58 [95% CI €1,049.62 - €1,661.55] and €18.72 [95% CI - €324.69 - €287.24] for vascular artery surgery cases, respectively. The break-even analysis showed that using two tests per case could achieve a minimum positive contribution margin with an average of 1.9 tests per case across the study population., Conclusion: The results revealed a positive budget impact for one NGS test and a slightly negative budget impact for two NGS tests per case. The human microbiome interacts with the host mainly in the intestinal lumen, where putrefactive bacteria are suggested to promote colorectal cancer (CRC). In contrast, probiotics and their isolated components and secreted substances, display anti-tumor properties due to their ability to modulate gut microbiota composition, promote apoptosis, enhance immunity, resist oxidation and alter metabolism. Probiotics help to form a solid intestinal barrier against damaging agents via altering the gut microbiota and preventing harmful microbes from colonization. Probiotic strains that specifically target essential proteins involved in the process of apoptosis can overcome CRC resistance to apoptosis. They can increase the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines, essential in preventing carcinogenesis, and eliminate cancer cells by activating T cell-mediated immune responses. There is a clear indication that probiotics optimize the antioxidant system, decrease radical generation, and detect and degrade potential carcinogens. In this review, the pathogenic mechanisms of pathogens in CRC and the recent insights into the mechanism of probiotics in CRC prevention and therapy are discussed to provide a reference for the actual application of probiotics in CRC., (© 2024. The author compared the functional properties of the striatal system in KM rats sensitive to the convulsive effects of sound with those in Wistar rats, which are insensitive to these effects. It was shown that bulbocapnine (an antagonist of dopamine) administered to the Wistar rats at a dose of 40 mg/kg body weight caused catalepsy, depressed the motor cortex excitability, and raised the threshold of the generalized Jacksonian-type convulsions. The KM rats showed neither catalepsy nor a rise in the generalized convulsion threshold, and the depression of the motor cortex excitability in them was only slight. Examinations of the apomorphine-induced stereotypy (dose 1.0-10 mg/kg) showed that in the KM rats the sensitivity of the receptors to dopamine was changed. The hyperproduction of catecholamines in the striatum, the hypothalamus, and adrenals in the KM rats suggests that the predisposition to epileptiform states correlates with the generalized defect in the metabolism of catecholamines. It is suggested that the hypersensitivity of KM rats to epileptogenic effects is due to a deficiency (caused by an excess of dopamine) in the depressing function of the striatum.

Women's physical attractiveness is associated with health and fertility, but various fashion accessories could act, however, as supernormal stimuli and may enhance physical attractiveness to the opposite sex. Wearing high heels could contribute to women's physical attractiveness in various ways. Across three independent studies, I investigated whether high heels influence the perception of leg length and consequently their physical attractiveness in both sexes and their role in women's intrasexual competition. Heeled legs were more attractive than non-heeled legs and heeled legs were also viewed as longer than non-heeled legs. Furthermore, high heels promote women's mates guarding of their own partners as well as their perception of the sexual receptivity of the target wearing high heels. A particular GTPase-activating protein called RACGAP1 is involved in apoptosis, proliferation, invasion, metastasis, and drug resistance in a variety of malignancies. Nevertheless, the role of RACGAP1 in pan-cancer was less studied, and its value of the expression and prognostic of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has not been explored. Hence, the goal of this study was to investigate the oncogenic and immunological roles of RACGAP1 in various cancers and its potential value in NPC. We comprehensively analyzed RACGAP1 expression, prognostic value, function, methylation levels, relationship with immune cells, immune infiltration, and immunotherapy response in pan-cancer utilizing multiple databases. The results discovered that RACGAP1 expression was elevated in most cancers and suggested poor prognosis, which could be related to the involvement of RACGAP1 in various cancer-related pathways such as the cell cycle and correlated with RACGAP1 methylation levels, immune cell infiltration and reaction to immunotherapy, and chemoresistance. RACGAP1 could inhibit anti-tumor immunity and immunotherapy responses by fostering immune cell infiltration and cytotoxic T lymphocyte dysfunction. Significantly, we validated that RACGAP1 mRNA and protein were highly expressed in NPC. The Gene Expression Omnibus database revealed that elevated RACGAP1 expression was associated with shorter PFS in patients with NPC, and RACGAP1 potentially influenced cell cycle progression, DNA replication, metabolism, and immune-related pathways, resulting in the recurrence and metastasis of NPC. The emergence of fluorinated organic compounds in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and textile industries has led to a potential increase in the environmental issues and health problems. Herein, a modified heterojunction of bio-synthesized Ag nanoparticles (Ag 0 NPs) immobilized on imidazole-modified graphite carbon nitride (Im/g-C 3 N 4 ) as a suitable support (Ag 0 /Im/g-C 3 N 4 ) was hydrothermally synthesized and studied for the photocatalytic removal of the most widely used antifungal organo-fluorine compound-fluconazole (FCZ). The optical properties were thoroughly investigated in the present study, and it was observed that the proposed modification to g-C 3 N 4 has led to the shifting of conduction and valance band edge position (for g-C 3 N 4 , -0.73 and 1.54 eV and for ICA, -1.14 and 1.28 eV), narrowing of band gap energies, i.e., 2.01 eV, and reduced charge recombination rate. The external and internal surface morphologies were scrutinized through FE-SEM and HR-TEM analyses. Functionalities and potential crystallinity were investigated using FTIR and XRD techniques. The elemental state and composition of the composite were analyzed via XPS. The obtained results substantiate the intended modifications in the ICA composite. The photocatalyst Ag 0 /Im/g-C 3 N 4 (ICA) was able to degrade 95.74% of FCZ with a high degradation rate (k 1 ) of 0.0289 min -1 within 2-h of the solar illumination experiment. The overall degradation process was observed to be governed by a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Detailed parameters such as effects of ions, pH (optimized pH 4, highest degradation rate k 1 =0.039 min -1 ), dissolved organic matter (DOM), and optimization of catalysts dosage were studied. The major reactive oxygen species (ROS) was identified as super-oxide radicals (O 2 ●- ). The HR-MS and COD-TOC analysis were used to evaluate the degradation and mineralization of FCZ forced by ICA catalysts. Cellular exhaustion in various immune cells develops in response to prolonged stimulation and overactivation during chronic infections and in cancer. Marked by an upregulation of inhibitory receptors and diminished effector functions, exhausted immune cells are unable to fully eradicate the antigen responsible for the overexposure. In cancer settings, this results in a relatively small but constant tumor burden known as a localized tumor-immune stalemate. In recent years, studies have elucidated key aspects of the development and progression of cellular exhaustion and have re-addressed previous misconceptions. Biological publications have also provided insight into the functional capabilities of exhausted cells. Complementing these findings, the model presented here serves as a mathematical framework for the establishment of cellular exhaustion and the development of the localized stalemate against a solid tumor. Analysis of this model indicates that this stalemate is stable and can handle small perturbations. Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a significant global health issue. In this study, the role of T-cell exhaustion-related genes (TEXs) in CRC was investigated using single-cell and bulk RNA-seq analysis. This research involved extensive data analysis using multiple databases, including the TCGA-COAD cohort, GSE14333, and GSE39582. Through single-cell analysis, distinct cell populations within CRC samples were identified and classified T-cells into four subgroups: regulatory T-cells (Tregs), conventional CD4+ T-cells (CD4+ T conv), CD8+ T, and CD8+ T exhausted cells. Intercellular communication networks and signaling pathways associated with TEXs using computational tools such as CellChat and PROGENy. Additionally, TEX-related alterations in tumor gene pathways were analyzed through Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses. Prognostic models were developed, and their correlation with immune infiltration was assessed. The study revealed the presence of distinct cell populations within CRC, with TEXs playing a crucial role in the tumor microenvironment. CD8+ T exhausted cells exhibited expression of specific markers, indicating their involvement in tumor immune evasion. CellChat and PROGENy analyses revealed intricate communication networks and signaling pathways associated with TEXs, including RNA splicing and viral carcinogenesis. Furthermore, the prognostic risk model developed on the basis of TEXs demonstrated its efficacy in stratifying CRC patients. This risk model exhibited strong correlations with immune infiltration by various effector immune cells, highlighting the influence of TEXs on the tumor immune response. The complex interactions and signaling pathways underlying TEX-associated immune dysregulation in CRC were revealed by employing advanced analytical approaches. The development of a prognostic risk model based on TEXs offers a promising tool for prognostic stratification in patients with CRC. Furthermore, the correlations observed between TEXs and immune infiltration provide valuable insights into the potential of TEXs as therapeutic targets and highlight the need for further investigation into TEX-mediated immune evasion mechanisms. In recent years, the potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily D (KCND) channels, particularly KCND2 (also known as Kv4.2), have been suggested to play a role in a variety of cancers, but their role in breast cancer has not yet been revealed. We analyzed RNA sequencing data from The Cancer Genome Atlas database and the Genotype-Tissue Expression database to investigate the differential expression of KCND2 in breast cancer and normal breast tissue. In addition, we leveraged GO and KEGG analysis techniques to gain a better understanding of the potential functional enrichment of 500 genes related to KCND2. Our findings were validated using collected tissue samples and clinical data from hospitals showed that KCND2 is a crucial independent factor in the prognosis of breast cancer patients. The higher the expression of KCND2, the shorter the survival time of breast cancer patients. Colony formation assay confirmed that KCND2 promotes the proliferation of breast cancer cells, whereas transwell assay and wound healing assay verified that KCND2 promoted breast cancer invasion and migration. In addition, 5-Ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) and flow cytometry revealed that KCND2 affected the cycle changes of breast cancer cells and contributed to the G1/S phase transition of breast cancer cells. The decommissioned fahlore Cu-Sb(-Ag) mine at Mt. Avanza (Carnic Alps, Italy) is a rare example of exploited ore deposits, as the tetrahedrite (Cu 6 [Cu 4 (Fe,Zn) 2 ]Sb 4 S 13 ) is the main ore mineral found. This multi-compartmental geochemical characterisation approach provides one of the first case studies regarding the geochemical behaviour and fate of Hg, Sb, As, Cu, and other elements in solid and water matrices and of Hg in the atmosphere in an environment affected by the mining activity of a fahlore ore deposit. Elevated concentrations of the elements (Cu, Sb, As, Pb, Zn, Hg) associated with both (Zn-Hg)-tetrahedrite and to other minor ore minerals in mine wastes, soils, and stream sediments were observed. Concentrations in waters and stream sediments greatly decreased with increasing distance from the mining area and the I geo index values testify the highest levels of sediment contamination inside the mine area. Thallium and Ge were associated with the "lithogenic component" and not to sulfosalt/sulphide minerals. Although mine drainage water often slightly exceeded the national regulatory limits for Sb and As, with Sb being more mobile than As, the relatively low dissolved concentrations indicate a moderate stability of the tetrahedrite. The fate of Hg at the investigated fahlore mining district appeared similar to cinnabar mining sites around the world. Weak solubility but the potential evasion of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) into the atmosphere also appear to be characteristics of Hg in fahlore ores. Although GEM concentrations are such that they do not present a pressing concern, real-time field surveys allowed for the easy identification of Hg sources, proving to be an effective, suitable high-resolution indirect approach for optimising soil sampling surveys and detecting mine wastes and mine adits., (© 2023. The aim of this work was to prove the use of radionuclides deposited in sediment core taken from an overgrowing dystrophic lakes surrounded by marsh-peat vegetation to estimate sedimentary conditions. Sediment core samples were taken from the Toporowe Stawy Lakes (Niżni (TSN) and Wyżni (TSW); Tatra Mountains). The sampling was done using a Limnos corer. After the physical sample preparations, gamma measurements were performed. Radiochemical analysis was applied with the aim of determining 210 Pb radioactivity by means of 210 Po. The mean values for TSN lake are as follows: 137 Cs ~ 123 Bq∙kg -1 , 40  K ~ 389 Bq∙kg -1 , 228 Th ~ 55 Bq∙kg -1 , 226 Ra ~ 86 Bq∙kg -1 , 241 Am ~ 5 Bq∙kg -1 , and 210 Pb uns  ~ 180 Bq∙kg -1 . For TSW lake, the radioactivity levels of 226 Ra and 241 Am are comparable to the TSN. The mean values of 137 Cs, 40  K, and 228 Th are almost twice as high as in TSN. The level of 210 Pb in uppermost layer of TSN is higher than in TSW. Sediments were dated by use of 210 Pb method, and the rate of sedimentation of each layer was also estimated. Basic chemometric tools were used to confirm the way of deposition of radionuclide, find the correlations between variables, and compare analyzed lakes. It was concluded that the presented type of lakes are a valuable source of information and the vertical distribution of radionuclide can be used to interpret the source of material supply and factors that influence the sedimentation process in recent 150-200 years., (© 2022. Human body is colonized by trillions of microbes, influenced by several factors, both endogenous, as hormones and circadian regulation, and exogenous as, life-style habits and nutrition. The alteration of such factors can lead to microbial dysbiosis, a phenomenon which, in turn, represents a risk factor in many different pathologies including cancer, diabetes, autoimmune and cardiovascular disease, and infertility. Female microbiota dysbiosis (vaginal, endometrial, placental) and male microbiota dysbiosis (seminal fluid) can influence the fertility, determining a detrimental impact on various conditions, as pre-term birth, neonatal illnesses, and macroscopic sperm parameters impairments. Furthermore, unprotected sexual intercourse creates a bacterial exchange between partners, and, in addition, each partner can influence the microbiota composition of partner's reproductive tracts. The Spišská Magura mountain range, located in the Middle Spiš, is one of the regions in Slovakia most contaminated by heavy metals resulting from mining and smelting activities. Heavy metals and other potentially toxic elements have accumulated in mountain areas via atmospheric transport. The influence of the daily range size of the European hare on its contamination by heavy metals was investigated in three habitat types (forest, woodland edge, meadow) in the Spišská Magura mountain range in the West Carpathians. Individual hares (n = 21) were traced and located by GPS following snowfall. Pair samples of their faeces (n = 64) and food (n = 64) were collected from feeding sites. The maps created were used for determination of the size of the daily range as being small or large. All hares that have a small daily range avoid meadows and open spaces due to the higher predation risk. However, individuals with a large daily range feed in all habitats, including meadows. Hares with a small daily range in a forest habitat ingested higher amounts of bio-elements Ca, Cr, S, and Mn as well as higher amounts of heavy metals Ba and Pb than hares with a large daily range. Moreover, dominant hares with a small daily range, with access to abundant food sources in a forest habitat, may gradually take on higher levels of bio-elements including heavy metals that are present in their food source. In contrast, in the woodland edge, hares with a small daily range had a smaller concentration of Ca, Cr, Mn, S, Ba, and Pb compared to hares with a large daily range. Caecotrophy plays a very significant role as far as the intake of nutrients and other elements is concerned. The contamination of water with organic compounds has become an increasing concern in today's world. The cost-effective and sustainable treatment of industrial wastewaters is a major challenge. Advanced treatment techniques such as electrocoagulation-electroflotation offer economic and reliable solutions for the treatment of industrial wastewater. In this study, the electrocoagulation-electroflotation method was investigated for the simultaneous removal of chemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, and color via response surface methodology. Factors such as electrode combination (Fe and Al), current density (10-20 mA/cm 2 ), pH (3.0-9.0), and electrode distance (1-3 cm) were investigated in the treatment of wastewater to obtain maximum treatment efficiency. It was determined that chemical oxygen demand, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, and color removal reached up to 94.0%, 77.5%, 97.0%, and 99.0%, respectively. Strength-based approaches to youth development have been tested in community settings and are related to improvements in social, health, and academic realms. However, little is known about similar approaches to enhance parent-teen communication (PTC) in pediatric primary care. The goal of this study was to test the feasibility and acceptability of an intervention to facilitate parent-teen communication about teen strengths. Intervention materials were developed based on a literature review, expert consultation, and feedback from stakeholders. The final intervention was a parent-directed booklet and a parent-teen discussion activity. At the well-adolescent visit (WAV), dyads received an orientation to the materials and were instructed to complete the discussion activity within 2 weeks of the WAV. Health Care Providers verbally endorsed the materials and instructed parents to read the booklet and complete the discussion activity with their teens. Acceptability was assessed at 2-week and 2-month follow-ups. Parent-adolescent dyads from an urban, pediatric primary care practice were enrolled with half assigned to the treatment group. Those in the treatment group (60 dyads) are the focus of this paper. Youth were 13-15 years old, 55% female, and 66% Black. Most participating parents (97%) were female. Fidelity was ≥ 88% for delivery of each of the intervention components. Fifty-four of the 60 parents in the intervention group completed the 2-week call. Of those 54 parents, 96% read the booklet and 62% found the booklet either extremely or very helpful. The majority of parents (67%) and teens (72%) reported that the discussion activity was excellent or very good. Analysis of qualitative data also provided rich insight into the participants' experiences with the intervention materials. Overall results suggest that an intervention to promote PTC about teen strengths is feasible and acceptable to parents and teens within primary care.

This article presents a review of anaerobic treatment technologies to treat slaughterhouse wastewater including its advantages and disadvantages. Physico-chemical characteristics and biochemical methane potential (BMP) of slaughterhouse wastewater are addressed. Various anaerobic treatment technologies are presented with the related operating parameters, viz., hydraulic retention time (HRT), organic loading rate (OLR), upflow velocity (V up ), and biogas yield vis-a-vis treatment efficiency in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD). In addition, various factors that affect the anaerobic treatment of slaughterhouse wastewater such as high oil & grease (O & G) concentration in influent, inhibitors, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and the loading rate are also addressed. The literature review indicated that the slaughterhouse wastewater can be treated effectively by employing any anaerobic treatment technologies at OLRs up to 5 kg COD/m 3 .d with more than 80% COD removal efficiency without experiencing operational problems. Anaerobic hybrid reactors (AHRs) were found the most effective among various reviewed technologies because of their ability to operate at higher OLRs (8 to 20 kg COD/m 3 .d) and lower HRTs (8 to 12 hrs).

With current conflicting and confusing screening mammography guidelines between major medical organizations, radiologists have an opportunity to educate and advocate for patients using the power of social media. The authors provide a brief overview on the impact of social media in radiology, in particular Facebook, as well as challenges encountered by radiologists as they establish an online presence, and how to effectively use Facebook Live to advocate for screening mammography.

One of the sectors identified as a significant source of methane (CH.sub.4) emissions are solid waste disposal sites (SWDS). Landfills are the key source of CH.sub.4 emissions in the emissions inventory of Slovakia, and the actual emission factors are estimated with a high uncertainty level. The calculation of emission uncertainty of the landfills using the more sophisticated Tier 2 Monte Carlo method is evaluated in this article. The software package that works with the probabilistic distributions and their combination was developed with this purpose in mind. Polacik (3) Abstract: A reaction-diffusion model for the evolution of dispersal rates is considered in which there is both spatial heterogeneity and temporal periodicity. The model is restricted to two phenotypes because of technical difficulties, but a wide range of mathematical techniques and computational effort are needed to obtain useful answers. We find that the question of selection is a great deal richer than in the autonomous case, where the phenotype with the lowest diffusion is selected for. In the current model either the lower or higher diffuser rate may be selected, or there may be coexistence of phenotypes. The paper raises several open questions and suggests in particular that a mutation-selection multi-phenotypic model would repay study. The aim of this paper is to discuss whether there are different kinds of scientific revolution, and if so, how many. The basic idea of the paper is to discriminate between the formal and the social aspects of the development of science and to compare them. The paper has four parts. In the first introductory part we discuss some of the questions which arose during the debate of the historians of mathematics. In the second part, we introduce the concept of the epistemic framework of a theory. We propose to discriminate three parts of this framework, from which the one called formal frame will be of considerable importance for our approach, as its development is conservative and gradual. In the third part of the paper we define the concept of epistemic rupture as a discontinuity in the formal frame. The conservative and gradual nature of the changes of the formal frame open the possibility to compare different epistemic ruptures. We try to show that there are four different kinds of epistemic rupture, which we call idealisation, re-presentation, objectivisation and re-formulation. In the last part of the paper we derive from the classification of the epistemic ruptures a classification of scientific revolutions. As only the first three kinds of rupture are revolutionary (the re-formulations are rather cumulative), we obtain three kinds of scientific revolution: idealisation, re-presentation, and objectivisation. We characterize the epidemiology of pediatric bloodstream infections (BSIs) in Switzerland. We analyzed pathogen distribution and resistance patterns in monomicrobial and polymicrobial BSIs in children from 2008 to 2014 using data from the Swiss antibiotic resistance centre (ANRESIS). A confirmatory statistical analysis was performed comparing pathogens and resistance across 20 acute care hospitals. We identified 3,067 bacteremia episodes, of which 1,823 (59 %) were considered true BSI episodes. Overall, S. aureus (16.5 %, 300) was the most frequent pathogen, followed by E. coli (15.1 %, 276), coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS, 12.9 %, 235), S. pneumoniae (11.1 %, 202) and non-E. coli Enterobacteriaceae (8.7 %, 159). S. aureus and E. coli showed similar frequencies in all of the variables analyzed (e.g., hospital acquisition, hospital type, medical specialty). The proportion of these microorganisms did not change over time, resistance rates remained low (4.3 % methicillin resistance in S. aureus; 7.3 % third-/fourth-generation cephalosporin resistance in E. coli), and no significant resistance trends were observed. We observed a 50 % increase of CoNS BSIs from 2008 (9.8 %, 27) to 2014 (15.2 %, 46, p value for trend = 0.03). S. pneumoniae decreased from 17.5 % (48) to 6.6 % (20) during that timeframe (p for trend = 0.007). S. aureus and E. coli remained the most significant pathogens among pediatric BSIs in Switzerland, exhibiting low resistance rates. CoNS accounted for a greater proportion of BSIs over time. The decrease in bacteremic pneumococcal infections can likely be attributed to the introduction of the 13-valent conjugate vaccine in 2011.

Perceiving ambiguity in health information-that is, uncertainty elicited from believing information lacks credibility, reliability, or adequacy-is typically associated with pessimistic appraisals (e.g., high perceived disease risk) and behavioral avoidance. We examined the effect of ambiguous health information about COVID-19 on health cognitions and vaccination intentions, and tested a 'normalized-uncertainty' intervention. Two studies with identical methodology (online adult sample: n = 299, undergraduate sample: n = 150) were conducted in March to April 2020. Participants were randomly assigned to read one of three health messages about COVID-19 that emphasized what was currently unknown (ambiguity condition), what was currently unknown but that scientific uncertainty is expected (intervention condition), or what was currently known (control condition). The ambiguity condition led to greater perceived ambiguity than the control condition and perceived ambiguity in the intervention condition was comparable to the ambiguity condition. There were few differences in health cognitions, and no differences in vaccination intentions, when examining pairwise comparisons across the three conditions. Correlational analyses collapsing across condition indicated evidence of pessimistic appraisal but not behavioral avoidance among individuals who perceived greater ambiguity. To increase their reproductive success, ancestral males must show preferences for fertile females. Gravid females are infertile, and, thus, should be less preferred by males compared with non-gravid females. We investigated this idea by manipulating salient cues of pregnancy with a sample of Slovak females who were rated by males. Physical attractiveness of putatively pregnant females was lower compared with non-gravid females. In line with the idea that pursuing short-term and long-term relationships creates different costs to males, physical attractiveness of putatively pregnant females was lower for short-term compared with long-term possible relationship. Older males and uncommitted males rated females as more attractive compared with younger and committed males. Moss spores are present in aerobiological samples, but their low representation, lack of known allergenic properties, and difficult identification have led to their being overlooked by aerobiologists so far. The data about their presence in the atmosphere and the factors that influence them are, however, important from the biodiversity conservation point of view, since they give us information about their ability to spread to new habitats. In this pilot study, we analysed their presence in the atmosphere of Bratislava city, Slovakia (2018-2023), using Burkard volumetric sampler, and determined the most significant factors influencing its temporal distribution. The size category of 13-18 µm was the most represented in the samples. Environmental factors influenced the daily spore concentrations and the characteristics of the whole spore season. The start of the Main Spore Season (MSS) depended mainly on the temperatures in November-January, initiating earlier growth of sporophytes in the following year, while the intensity of the MSS was influenced by high humidity in April, stimulating the formation of spores in sporangia. The daily concentration of airborne moss spores was mostly influenced by the actual temperature and wind speed, promoting the release and dispersal of spores, and precipitation lowering their levels due to the "wash-out" effect, although no intradiurnal pattern was observed. Objective This study aimed to understand parental decisions, perspectives, values, and beliefs on next generation sequencing in the newborn period (NGS-NBS) to inform the development of a decision aid to support parental decision making in the North Carolina Newborn Exome Sequencing for Universal Screening study. Methods We conducted dyadic interviews with 66 current or expectant parents (33 couples) to understand overall decisions about NGS-NBS and reasons for and against learning NGS-NBS results differing by age of onset and medical actionability. Audio recordings were transcribed, coded, and analyzed using qualitative framework analyses. Results Favorable views of NGS-NBS included benefits of early intervention, preparedness, child autonomy, and altruism. Unfavorable views were the potential negative effects from early intervention, psychosocial harm, and religious beliefs. Parents universally reported quality of life as important. Conclusion Interviews elucidated what is important in deciding to have NGS-NBS. Purpose Approximately 80% of pregnant women use medications. There is a need for evidence based medicines information that provide realistic risk estimates as pregnant and breastfeeding women tend to overestimate the risk of medications. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development and future perspectives of an innovative medicines information service aiming to increase empowerment among pregnant and breastfeeding women. Description SafeMotherMedicine (SMM) (http://www.tryggmammamedisin.no http://www.tryggmammamedisin.no ) is a Norwegian medicines information service for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Established in 2011, the service was initially web-based only, in contrast to most teratology information services that at the time mainly operated using telephone and/or e-mail. Assessment During the last eight years, SMM has provided close to 30,000 answers promoting appropriate medication use among pregnant and breastfeeding women. SMM launched a telephone-service in 2016, however, the annual number of questions received through the web-based service continues to increase. Conclusion The service seems to have fulfilled a previously unmet need of evidence-based, individually tailored information about medications to pregnant and breastfeeding women in Norway. The rising number of invasive fungal infections caused by drug-resistant Candida strains is one of the greatest challenges for the development of novel antifungal strategies. The scarcity of available antifungals has drawn attention to the potential of natural products as antifungals and in combinational therapies. One of these is catechins-polyphenolic compounds-flavanols, found in a variety of plants. In this work, we evaluated the changes in the susceptibility of Candida glabrata strain characterized at the laboratory level and clinical isolates using the combination of catechin and antifungal azoles. Catechin alone had no antifungal activity within the concentration range tested. Its use in combination with miconazole resulted in complete inhibition of growth in the sensitive C. glabrata isolate and a significant growth reduction in the azole resistant C. glabrata clinical isolate. Simultaneous use of catechin and miconazole leads to increased intracellular ROS generation. The enhanced susceptibility of C. glabrata clinical isolates to miconazole by catechin was accompanied with the intracellular accumulation of ROS and changes in the plasma membrane permeability, as measured using fluorescence anisotropy, affecting the function of plasma membrane proteins., (© 2023. Mixing layer height (MLH) is an important meteorological parameter for air quality since it significantly affects ground-level pollution in the atmosphere. This study examined the properties of the MLH on diurnal and seasonal timescales over a 3-year period (2020-2022) using high temporal resolution measurements from eight Vaisala CL31 ceilometers situated around Slovakia. Hourly averaged MLH data was retrieved from the BL-View software using merged method. The highest daily maxima for the MLH occurred mostly in summer and spring, while the lowest values occurred predominantly during winter and autumn. The average MLH daily maximum in summer was 2229 m, and just 859 m in winter. During summer, the spatial distribution of the MLH daily maxima was more uniform compared to winter, when the air masses within the individual valleys did not mix well. Correlations between ground-level pollutant concentrations and hourly mean/daily mean MLH were analyzed. The highest correlation, R≈0.6, was found for O 3 . For PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and NO x , the anticorrelations with MLH were found with maximum in winter (R ≈ - 0.3 for hourly data and R ≈ - 0.5 for daily mean data) but no relation in summer. Lastly, the ceilometer MLH was compared to the radiosonde retrieved MLH for various cloud covers. Our analysis is based on an extensive set of empirical data, which can improve the accuracy and effectiveness of meteorological and atmospheric chemistry models. The intensity of birch pollen season is expressed by seasonal pollen integral (SPIn, the sum of the mean daily pollen concentration during the birch pollination period) and the amount of Bet v 1 allergen released per birch pollen grain expressed by pollen allergen potency (PAP). Betula pollen and Bet v 1 allergen were simultaneously measured in the air of Bratislava from 2019 to 2022 by using two Burkard traps (Hirst-type and cyclone) in order to evaluate the causes of the seasonal variation in the SPIn and PAP levels. The highest SPIn (19,975 pollen/m 3 ) was observed in 2022 and the lowest one (1484 pollen/m 3 ) in 2021. The average daily PAP level (4.0 pg Bet v 1/pollen) was highest in 2019 and lowest (2.5 pg Bet v 1/pollen) in 2020. We found that seasonal variation in SPIn was associated mainly with the changes in environmental conditions during the pre-season period, whereas the year-to-year variation in PAP levels was attributed to environmental conditions during both pre- and in-season periods. Our results indicate that rainy weather in June 2020 and cold overcast weather in January‒February 2021 resulted in low SPIn in 2021. On the other hand, dry weather in June 2021 and warm weather in January‒February 2022 resulted in high SPIn in 2022. The low average daily PAP level in 2020 was associated with (1) low levels of gaseous air pollutants in March, when the ripening of pollen takes place; (2) an earlier start of the birch main pollen season (MPS); and (3) dry weather during the MPS. In 2008, the US Preventive Services Task Force updated its recommendations to discourage screening for prostate cancer in men over 75 and for colorectal cancer in adults over 85. We aimed to determine whether newspapers portrayed these screenings differently after these recommendation changes. A quantitative content analysis included articles on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing or colonoscopy in US newspapers from 2005 to 2012. Outcomes included the number of benefits and harms mentioned and the gist expert and lay readers might get from articles. Benefits in PSA articles (n = 222) and harms and benefits in colonoscopy articles (n = 65) did not change over time. Mentions of PSA harms increased after 2008 (p < .01). Expected expert gist of PSA articles became more negative after 2008 (p < .01). Expected lay gist was positive and did not change. News coverage of PSA testing harms increased without a decrease in the discussion of benefits. Consumers, especially lay consumers, are receiving unbalanced information on cancer screening. The age of intraplate volcanism in northern Pannonian Basin of Carpathians is revisited using a combination of zircon U/Pb, zircon (U-Th)/He and apatite (U-Th)/He dating techniques, complemented by electron microprobe (EMP) characterisation of dated minerals. A total of six maar structures and diatremes in the South-Slovakian Volcanic Field (SSVF) were dated and the obtained new ages yielded the following key findings: Two isolated maars in SE part indirectly dated by geomorphologic constraints to Late Pleistocene are actually of Pliocene (2.8 ± 0.2 Ma) and Late Miocene (5.5 ± 0.6 Ma) ages. In contrast, two maars in NW part of the study area are of Late Pliocene age (4.1 ± 0.4 and 5.2-5.4 Ma), younger than the Late Miocene age (~6.5 Ma) inferred previously from K/Ar data on the proximal basaltic lava flows. These maars therefore belong to the second volcanic phase that was previously identified only in SE part of the SSVF. In the light of the new geochronologic data, it seems likely that the Pliocene phreatomagmatic eruptions may have occurred along extension-related, NW- and NE-trending orthogonal faults. EMP analyses and imaging revealed an extensive syn- and post-growth metasomatic replacement by dissolution-reprecipitation in the majority of zircons. Abundant silicate melt inclusions in porous metasomatised parts of the zircons are diagnostic of magmatic rather than hydrothermal metasomatism. Consistent ages of the metasomatised and non-metasomatised zones do not indicate disturbance of the U-Pb system during the metasomatism. Enrichment in U and Th loss in the metasomatised zircons are diagnostic of an increasing oxygen fugacity triggered by degassing of the volatile residual melt during the final stages of alkali basalt fractionation. Rare zircon-to-baddeleyite transformation was probably connected with lowered silica activity in carbonated basaltic magmas in south-eastern part of the study area. The pseudometallophyte Rumex acetosella L. occupies habitats with normal and high soil concentrations of zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), and copper (Cu). It remains unclear if the plants respond to the toxic metals by altering their morphology and increasing the resilience of their cells. We compared plants growing on soils contaminated with Zn/Pb (populations Terézia, Lintich), or Cu (populations Špania Dolina, Staré Hory), with those from non-contaminated soil (Dúbravka) in Slovakia, and analysed leaf structure, physiology, and metal contents by light and electron microscopy, element localization by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) in scanning electron microscope, and by specific fluorescence dyes. In control population, the epidermis of the amphistomatic leaves of R. acetosella contained capitate glandular trichomes, consisting of four head (secretory), two stalk, and two basal cells. The ultrastructure of secretory cells revealed fine wall ingrowths bordered by plasma membrane protruding into the cytoplasm. The metallicolous populations had higher contents of Zn and Cu in the epidermal and glandular cells, and a higher density of both stomata and trichomes. Extensive cell wall labyrinth was present in the trichome secretory cells. Their abnormal number and elevated metal contents might indicate effects of heavy metals, especially of Cu, on mitosis and cell plate formation. Differences in leaf physiology were indicated by significantly higher cytoplasmic tolerance to Zn and Cu in metallicolous populations and by structural properties of glandular heads suggesting secretion of toxic metals. The Phl p 5 allergen of the plant species Phleum pratense is considered one of the most crucial grass pollen allergenic molecules inducing respiratory allergies. In this study, we evaluated seasonal variation in the concentration of both grass pollen and Phl p 5 allergens as well as the ratio allergen/pollen (pollen potency) in the air of Bratislava during two consecutive years, 2019-2020. These 2 years differed in terms of air pollution, as COVID-19 lockdown in spring 2020 considerably improved air quality in the study area. Air samples were collected using a Hirst-type sampler for pollen detection and the cyclone sampler for aeroallergen detection. In 2020, we observed 80.3% higher seasonal pollen integral, probably associated with the longer pollen season duration, however, 43.6% lower mean daily pollen potency than in 2019. The mean daily pollen value was 37.5% higher in 2020 than in the previous year, while the mean daily allergen value was 14.9% lower in 2020. To evaluate the relationship between the amount of pollen or allergen in the air and selected meteorological factors and air pollution parameters, we used multiple regression analysis. Regarding weather factors, precipitation and relative humidity were significantly associated with pollen and/or allergen concentration, though these associations were negative. Atmospheric pollutants, especially CO, NO 2 and O 3 were significantly associated with pollen and/or allergen levels. The associations with CO and O 3 were positive, while the association with NO 2 was negative. Fast-growing plant, giant reed (Arundo donax L.) has been gaining a lot of popularity in the phytoremediation of metal-polluted soils. However, information regarding the physiological background of tolerance and accumulation capacity of A. donax with respect to antimony (Sb), arsenic (As), and their co-contamination are very limited. Rooted stem cuttings were grown for 5 months in hydroponics exposed to Sb (10 mg L -1 ), As (10 mg L -1 ), and their combined toxicity (Sb 5 mg L -1 + As 5 mg L -1 ) wherein treatment without As/Sb served as control. Effect of these treatments on key photosynthetic parameters (rate of net photosynthesis, effective quantum yield of photosystem II, chlorophyll fluorescence, and photosynthetic pigments), phytoextraction ability of metalloids, nutrient uptake, root growth, and lignification were analyzed. Arsenic-containing treatments severely affected root morphology of A. donax compared to Sb/control and plants exposed to As showed intensive lignification already in young apical part of the root in the present study. Shoot concentration was found to be 11.35±0.75 Sb mg kg -1 and 8.97±0.52 As mg kg -1 compared to root concentration of 1028.3±19.1 Sb mg kg -1 and 705.3±69.9 As mg kg -1 in the treatments of Sb and As. Even though Sb and As were translocated to the shoots in relatively small amount, both metalloids significantly decreased the shoot and root growth of A. donax and negatively affected the photosynthetic parameters. Moreover, co-contamination of Sb and As proved to be severely toxic to growth and physiology of A. donax even though the magnitudes of the metalloids used were lower than those of Sb/As alone treatments. In conclusion, Sb and As caused a marked reduction in growth and physiological characteristics of A. donax, opposing its use in phytoremediation of highly contaminated soils. Tolerance capacity of plants to simultaneous presence of As and Sb in the environment is crucial for the successful implementation of phytoremediation since the co-contamination by As and Sb might reduce the efficiency of phytoremediation when using this fast-growing and high biomass-producing plant species., (© 2021. It is well known that road transport emits various trace elements into the environment, which are deposited in soils in the vicinity of roads, so-called roadside soils, and thus contributes to the deterioration of their chemical state. The aim of this work was to determine concentrations of some metals and metalloids (arsenic (As), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), antimony (Sb), vanadium (V), and zinc (Zn)) in soils from crossroads with traffic signals, which are characterized by deceleration of vehicles and increased emissions of elements related mainly to brake and tyre wear. The results confirmed a moderate enrichment of soils with Cu, Pb, and Zn (enrichment factor (EF) values > 2) and significant enrichment for Sb (EF > 5), while the other elements showed no or minimal enrichment. The age of crossroads proved to have a positive influence on the accumulation of some elements in soils with the largest differences for Cu, Fe, Pb, Sb, and Zn (p < 0.001). Traffic volumes expressed as the average daily traffic intensity (ADTI) also positively influenced soil concentrations of Cr, Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn, while distance to the crossroad had a significant negative effect on the soil concentration of Cu, Sb, and Zn (p < 0.001). The stable isotopic ratios of Pb, 206 Pb/ 207 Pb and 208 Pb/ 206 Pb, ranging from 1.1414 to 1.2046 and from 2.0375 to 2.1246, respectively, pointed to the mixed natural-anthropic origin of Pb in the soils of crossroads with a visible contribution of traffic-related sources. Based on the above findings combined with covariance among the studied elements using statistical methods applied to compositionally transformed data, it was possible to show that Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn clearly originated from road traffic.

The spindle tree (Euonymus europaeus L.) is a much-branched deciduous shrub or small tree. Its fruit capsules contain seeds with remarkably high content of oil interesting for industry, especially the 3-acetyl-1,2-diacyl-sn-glycerols (AcDAG) synthesized by a specific acetyl-CoA diacylglycerol acetyltransferase. The distribution and amount of individual triacylglycerols (TAG) and especially acetyl-triacylglycerols (AcDAG) in Euonymus fruit have previously been assigned to specific tissues. Using anatomical and microscopical observations, we studied the fruit morphology, and for the first time, we identified a more detailed allocation of oil bodies in individual tissue structures. Thin layer chromatography separation of extracts from immature and mature fruits confirmed TAG and AcDAG as the most abundant lipid classes in both endosperm and embryo, followed by fatty acids and polar lipids. The abundance of fatty acids was further studied in the TAG and AcDAG fractions using gas chromatography. Data revealed particular FAs in both fractions allocated in tissue-specific manner and/or as indicators of maturation of E. europaeus seeds. While the abundance of cis-vaccenic-, linoleic as well as α-linolenic acids in the AcDAG structures generally drop with maturation in both embryo and endosperm, content of oleic acid increases. Abundance of cis-vaccenic acid in TAG was recorded in immature endosperm. For embryo, the abundance of stearic acid in AcDAG and oleic acid in TAG fraction was distinctive. Deeper understanding of underlying metabolic processes will be essential for targeted metabolic engineering and/or application for oilseed crops.

Aspergillus ochraceus is a soil fungus known to produce ochratoxin A, a harmful secondary metabolite. Prevention and control of fungal pathogens mostly rely on chemical fungicides, which is one of the contributing factors in the emergence of the fungal resistance, hence novel methods for fungal eradication have been extensively researched. The cold atmospheric pressure (CAP) plasma generated in ambient air has been recently applied in microbial decontamination. Here we used the diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharge in inactivation of a toxigenic strain A. ochraceus. The plasma-treated conidia and mycelium exhibited morphological changes such as ruptures and desiccation. Mycelium dehydration and changes in the chemical composition of hyphal surface accompanied plasma treatment. The growth of 26 h old mycelia were significantly restricted after 30 s of plasma treatment. The conidial vitality declined 4 logs after 180 s of plasma exposure leading to almost complete decontamination. After shorter plasma treatment of conidia, the ochratoxin A (OTA) production increased at the early stage of cultivation, but the overall level was significantly reduced compared to untreated samples after longer cultivation. Our results indicated that the fungal growth and the OTA production were significantly changed by plasma treatment and underscored CAP plasma as a promising method in the decontamination of A. ochraceus without a risk to generate strains with increased OTA production.

A thunderstorm is a risk factor for severe respiratory allergy or asthma attacks in patients suffering from pollen/spore allergy. This study aimed to investigate the changes in the spectrum and quantity of pollen and fungal spores in the air of Bratislava during summer storms as well as the impact of selected environmental parameters on these changes. Pollen/spore samples were collected using a Burkard volumetric aerospore trap during summer 2016. To identify those types of pollen/spores that may harm human health during the storm episodes, we analysed how the concentration of individual bioparticles in the air changed during pre-storm/storm/post-storm periods. The effect of environmental variables on the concentration of selected pollen/spore types was evaluated through Spearman's correlation analysis. The results of our study suggest that thunderstorm-related respiratory allergy symptoms in the study area may be caused by (1) spores of Myxomycetes, the airborne concentration of which increases due to an increase in wind speed during the pre-storm period; (2) ruptured pollen and Diatripaceae spores, the concentration of which increases due to increase in precipitation and relative air humidity, respectively, during the storm period; and (3) spores of Fusarium and Leptosphaeria, the concentration of which increases due to increase in precipitation and air temperature, respectively, during the post-storm period.

In this work, a new combination of oxidation treatments for the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) is investigated. This innovative wastewater (WW) treatment includes the use of ferrate (FeO 4 2- ) and its decomposition byproducts under dark and UVA irradiation. The oxidation by ferrate leads to a fast but incomplete degradation of BPA with a degradation extent of 45% after 60 min under adopted experimental conditions. However, the ferrate decomposition byproducts which are constituted by solid iron species can be used to further improve the pollutant degradation efficiency. Indeed, ferrate-mediated heterogeneous photo-Fenton process is employed for the first time to enhance the degradation of BPA. With respect to the application for wastewater treatment, UVA irradiation (which is part of solar light), non-toxic and natural origin compounds such as ascorbic acid (AA) and ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS), are used to design a sustainable process. Under optimized conditions, the degradation extent of BPA using this newly designed treatment reaches almost 100% with AA and 70% with EDDS. In order to assess the feasibility of this treatment, the ferrate-mediated photo-Fenton process is applied to treat municipal wastewater. The obtained results in WW are highly encouraging since a maximum BPA degradation extent of 63% and 60% is observed after 300 min by using AA and EDDS, respectively.

Yeast Candida utilis is considered to be a potentially advantageous expression system for production of recombinant proteins utilizable for industrial and pharmaceutical purposes. As the scientific literature is not consistent in the ploidy of this yeast, in this work, we focused on resolving the problem via several methods such as the copy number determination of maltase gene by multiplex PCR, measuring α-glucosidase activity, the characterization of maltase gene copy number in deletion mutants using qPCR and flow cytometry. In context with the published data and results obtained in this study about the copy number of the maltase gene on C. utilis genome, we attempted to hypothesise and made conclusion about the ploidy of C. utilis. The results of this work, besides the biotechnological aspect, contribute to the elementary knowledge of C. utilis. The exact information about the ploidy or more specifically about the copy number of appropriate gene is essential for expression cassette dosage determination integrated into the chromosome of the host. In this study, we come to the conclusion that the maltase gene is present in C. utilis genome in four alleles, and in combination with flow cytometry, published information and the published genome sequences, the observations support the theory about tetraploidy of C. utilis.
