When participants in introductory business courses encounter the term "operations strategy," it is not easy for them to appreciate what operations strategy is about, or how it fits with overall business strategy. This game breaks down highfalutin jargon into experiences that participants can readily relate to. While working in teams to make paper boats, and competing with other teams, participants realize that they have intuitively engaged in the formulation and implementation of their team's operations strategy. They begin to appreciate the interplay between the customer's requirements, their own team's strengths, the "competitive priorities" that their team must emphasize, and the tradeoffs inherent in making these decisions. In the last decade, the adoption of technological tools in manufacturing industry, such as the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine Learning (ML), has led to the advent of the industry 4.0 (I4.0). In this scenario, intelligent devices can generate large volumes of data about industrial machinery and equipment that can be used to make maintenance more efficient. Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) is an emerging maintenance strategy that uses systems' Condition Monitoring through IoT sensors installed on machinery to diagnose their faults or estimate their Remaining Useful Life (RUL). This study aims to conduct a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on the use of ML techniques in the field of PHM of industrial mechanical systems and equipment. 50 studies resulted eligible for the above-mentioned SLR. Diagnostics and prognostics approach and the ML algorithm types used in the 50 analyzed papers have been analyzed together with the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) used for their validation. From the analyses, it was found that Shallow Learning and Deep Learning (DL) algorithms are the most applied ones, while KPIs are used differently according to the type of task classification or regression. Moreover, results highlighted that many authors still use artificial datasets to test their algorithms, instead of datasets based on real data retrieved by their components. For the last type of datasets, this paper also introduces a schematic framework to standardize the step-by-step diagnostics and prognostics process carried out by the authors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents information on the Leading Edge Paper Products, a complex management simulation created in Great Britain in 1990 by a team at the Cambridge Management Centres, now a part of consulting firm ASK Europe PLC and recently updated and introduced to North America. The objectives of the participants within this business leadership simulation are to make sense of large amounts of information about a fictional business, to create possible solutions to the issues found in the data, to share and seek relevant information, issues, and ideas with other participants, to create corporate strategies and prioritize actions, to influence and lead other participants, and to prepare and give a preliminary strategic plan for the company. The simulation requires a room set-up that simulates a business office, with office spaces for all participants. This can be done in a large meeting room, using tables as desks.

This paper contributes to the development of a practice-based understanding of ethics. Ethics is here conceived as a critical practice of questioning and problematizing moral orders and moral rules-in-use in which subjects (re)define their relations to self and others. Situating this conception of ethics in the context of practice theory, we draw upon ideas of responsible decision-making (Derrida) and truth-telling (Foucault) to examine Daniel Ellsberg’s leaking of the “Pentagon Papers” as illustrative of ethics as critical practice. Despite the central role of legitimacy in social and organizational life, we know little of the subtle meaning-making processes through which organizational phenomena, such as industrial restructuring, are legitimated in contemporary society. Therefore, this paper examines the discursive legitimation strategies used when making sense of global industrial restructuring in the media. Based on a critical discourse analysis of extensive media coverage of a revolutionary pulp and paper sector merger, we distinguish and analyze five legitimation strategies: (1) normalization, (2) authorization, (3) rationalization, (4) moralization, and (5) narrativization. We argue that while these specific legitimation strategies appear in individual texts, their recurring use in the intertextual totality of the public discussion establishes the core elements of the emerging legitimating discourse. Research studies of shopping with companions, or "co-shopping," have investigated different "types of companion" (e.g., children, spouses, parents, friends) and the nature of their influence on shoppers' retail experience. By means of a systematic literature review guided by the standard review protocol PRISMA and qualitative content analysis, this paper offers a state-of-the-art overview of 66 studies and their findings, through the middle of 2023. It finds that sparse attention has been paid to shopping companions' behaviors and personalities and that it is so far impossible to attribute their impacts on shoppers specifically to one or more types of companion. It also finds that the various factors that could facilitate understanding of how companions' influences work in practice remain largely unexplored. In short, too little is known about how companions exert their influence and how shoppers process it and there remains much to be investigated about the interplay between shoppers, their companions, and an interacting salesperson. Our detailed findings and their implications could therefore usefully shape the agenda for future research into accompanied shopping. Plain Language Summary: A systematic study of retail shopping companions and their various effects The purpose of this article is to explore the current state of research on the phenomenon of shoppers who visit retail environments with a designated companion. Through a systematic literature review following a standard review protocol (PRISMA) and subsequent qualitative content analysis, we summarize the findings of previous research on how companion shoppers have been studied and the effects of companions on the person they accompany. It becomes clear that while the general effects of companions on shoppers are well understood, there is a lack of understanding of how they generate their influence on shoppers and how shoppers go about the process of translating their influence into emotions and behaviors. Awareness of these processes can help retailers and their frontline employees better understand their customers and their companions, and thus shape the way they deliver their services at the point of sale. Objective: I evaluate the contribution of a pioneering Human Factors special issue on human factors in industrial systems. Background: Papers on the content of the journal's first 10 years showed that industrial human factors/ergonomics (HF/E) in 1969 was quite a rarity in the journal and the society. Method: The 12 papers in the special issue are reviewed briefly and show a wide range of topics, including traditional industrial engineering, physical HF/E, and more mainstream applications of HF/E in this domain similar to those in military and aerospace domains. The evaluation is through citations, later journal content, society technical group membership, and specific influences of Harris's own paper in the issue. Results: The expected direct citation influence of this special issue was not found: Citation counts were in line with all papers in Human Factors. However, other journals have been founded in North America that serve industrial HF/E and provide an outlet for more papers per year than Human Factors. In addition, the industrial domain is well represented in the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. Finally, Harris's paper has been influential in the specific area of HF/E in inspection. Conclusions: Industrial HF/E is now more accepted within the HF/E community, although largely in the physical ergonomics subspecialty. Application: There is now evidence of use of HF/E techniques more broadly in industry, including service as well manufacturing enterprises. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Organisations often engage simultaneously in cooperation and competition. This has been termed coopetition. Previous research has treated coopetition as a feature of the market economy, situating the research primarily in the corporate and management literature. This paper provides an alternative snapshot of coopetition in a non-market economy – within Community Food Initiatives (CFIs) – and explores its impact on the community's resilience. Although externally, CFIs may appear entirely cooperative, data collected between 2019 and 2021 in Oxfordshire shows simultaneous cooperation and competition across a network of CFI actors. Applying the concept of coopetition to non-market economies extends our current knowledge and illuminates how the interplay between competition and cooperation informs decisions and relationships. This paper explores the role of coopetition between CFIs in relation to the community's resilience, or the ability of communities to adapt and maintain functionality during environmental, economic, social, or political challenges. It re-visualises Bengtsson and Kock's (2000) framework on coopetative typologies, creating a framework for dynamic coopetative relationships between CFI actors. It then outlines six 'insights' – the results of the work – and adds detail to the typology framework. It finds that, while competitive firms may consider equal relationships to be resilient, CFIs' 'comfort zone' is between cooperative-dominant and equal relationships, and that extremes in either direction can negatively impact CFI resilience if they are prolonged. It also highlights potential strategies for practitioners and supporters to improve CFI resilience, and suggests extending research to other non-market economy sectors to continue fleshing out coopetition research. This article analyses 131 articles that have been retracted from peer-reviewed journals in business and management studies. We also draw from six in-depth interviews: three with journal editors involved in retractions, two with coauthors of papers retracted because a fellow author committed research fraud, and one with a former academic found guilty of research fraud. Our aim is to promote debate about the causes and consequences of research misconduct and to suggest possible remedies. Drawing on corruption theory, we suggest that a range of institutional, environmental, and behavioral factors interacts to provide incentives that sustain research misconduct. We explore the research practices that have prompted retractions. We contend that some widely used, but questionable research practices, should be challenged so as to promote stronger commitment to research integrity and to deter misconduct. Since the publication of Birger Wernerfelt's seminal article on the 'Resource-based view of the firm' in 1984, the strategic management field has embraced the notion that firms are fundamentally heterogeneous in terms of their resources and internal capabilities. This paper assesses the development of the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm from Wernerfelt's own perspective. Given his limited engagement in the strategic management field over the previous decades, we asked Wernerfelt to revisit his work and to comment on the critical issues which have subsequently arisen as the RBV has developed into a dominant paradigm in strategic management. The market research industry is facing a major and exciting opportunity. If it doesn't respond imaginatively and constructively, market research risks being relegated to a bit-part role in the 'big picture' that is now represented by Customer Insight. This is one of our key conclusions following the completion of the second client-side project on Best Practice in the Management and Communication of Customer Insight. After reading this paper, if there are just three messages we need everyone in our industry to go away with, they are these: Customer Insight is built from multiple sources--of which market research is only a part. Customer Insight is a strategic asset, as importat to a business as its IT. Customer Insight must therefore be managed like a strategic asset. In this paper we will expand on these conclusions before then describing the journey that got us there, and the proof that our conclusions are indeed correct. ABSTRACT Mixed methods research is increasingly being used in business and management disciplines, in spite of positivist traditions. The aim of the study is twofold: (1) to examine the types of mixed methods approaches being used, and (2) to determine the quality of the reporting of mixed methods studies published in the field of project management. A retrospective content analysis of articles from three ranked project management journals was undertaken for a sample period of 2004 to 2010. Recently, the concept of value co-creation has gained popularity as it embraces customer and operant resources into the entire value-creation process, thereby overcoming the gaps of conventional marketing. In the last decade, literature of value co-creation gave multiple definitions to clarify the concept. The overlapping definitions became a source of confusion to both academics and practitioners. Realizing this need, a detailed structured literature review was undertaken and using a thematic content analysis, 27 elements of co-creation were identified. These elements were further classified into five pillars, namely: process environment, resource, co-production, perceived benefits and management structure. The paper presents a conceptualization of value co-creation by developing a framework that integrates five categories. Marketing is a relatively young discipline and mainstream marketing education pays little attention to the discipline's development and history. While on the sidelines of the discipline there has been some criticism of the lack of a historical understanding of marketing's development, marketing too often produces theory without appropriate regard to past marketing theory. This paper considers the case of the 'most important' paper on marketing theory in 2004 with reference to a leading marketing writer from the 1950s and 1960s. In this paper we analyze the role of marketing in the construction of what can be called the hegemony of development. Through an investigation of the marketing practices of the pulp and paper industry in South America and the resistances that are articulated by a range of civil society actors against the expansion of this industry, we problematize marketing as a political and contested discourse and practice. By using Laclau and Mouffe's (1985, 2001) theoretical framework, which is centered on the concept of 'hegemony', we highlight the crucial role marketing plays in the social and cultural legitimation of the highly controversial development of the pulp and paper industry - regarded as one of the most polluting industries in the world - in South America. We build on existing 'critical marketing' literatures to critique marketing's role in spreading 'development' practices around the world, and we introduce Laclau and Mouffe's theories to the marketing field in order to understand better the way marketing helps to produce 'development' as a hegemonic discourse in a particular social and cultural field. In this way we contribute to a growing understanding that critical marketing research is not only about exposing and analyzing the discourses and practices that drive consumption. Rather, we see marketing as an ontological discourse and practice that is crucial for the cultural and social legitimation of the development of entire industries and economic spheres. Objective: This paper considers the influence of "Humans and Automation: Use, Misuse, Disuse, Abuse" and examines how it relates to the evolving issue of human-automation interaction. Background: Automation presents important practical challenges that can dramatically affect satisfaction, performance, and safety; philosophical challenges also arise as automation changes the nature of work and human cognition. Method: Papers cited by and citing "Humans and Automation" were re- viewed to identify enduring and emerging themes in human-automation research.. Results: "Humans and Automation" emerges as an important node in the network of automation-related papers, citing many and being cited by many recent influential automation-related papers. In their article, Parasuraman and Riley (1997) integrated previous research and identified differing expectations across designers, managers, and operators regarding the need to support operators as a source of automation problems. They also foresaw and inspired research that addresses problems of overreliance and underreliance on automation. Conclusion: This pivotal article and associated research show that even though automation seems to relieve people of tasks, automation requires more, not less, attention to training, interface design, and interaction design. The original article also alludes to the emergence of vicious cycles and dysfunctional meta-control. These problems reflect the coevolution of automation and humans, in which both adapt to the responses of the other. Application: Understanding this coevolution has important philosophical implications for the nature of human cognition and practical implications for satisfaction, performance, and safety. Objective: This review evaluates (in retrospect) the contribution of Liles and associates (1984) to the causality debate of the work relatedness of low back pain. Background: Often it takes years to appreciate the role of a paper with respect to the body of literature as a whole. Method: Although many papers appear remarkable when they are first published, the real value of a contribution often can be appreciated by considering how the paper "fills in the pieces of the puzzle" over time. This paper examines how the Liles paper influenced low back pain causality efforts after its introduction. Results: This analysis indicates that Liles and associates contributed to the science of low back disorder causality by (a) advancing the idea of quantitative measures used for field studies, (b) identifying a dose-response relationship for low back pain, and (c) recognizing the influence of a system of work and nonwork influences related to low back pain development. Conclusion: The Liles contribution to Human Factors has proven to play a pivotal role in our understanding of how low back pain is influenced by work exposure. Application: The concepts introduced here can help future efforts associated with understanding musculoskeletal disorder causality and work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Innovation is the first driving force leading economic development, and small and medium-sized enterprises have strategic significance in stimulating innovation activity and promoting economic growth. Few studies concentrating on small and medium-sized businesses examine the connection between executive incentive contracts and business innovation. Therefore, we use them as the research object in this study. We empirically analyze the relationship between executive incentive contracts and enterprise innovation using the research sample of small and medium-sized board-listed companies from 2009 to 2020, focusing on long-term equity and short-term pay incentives. The study also analyzes if the corporate environment will impact a specific motivational system. The results show that improving executive shareholding and pay level can significantly promote enterprise innovation. The areas with better business environments mean practical innovation. Otherwise, organizational equity and pay incentives positively affect innovation in non-state-owned enterprises. This effect might increase the business environment compared to state-owned enterprises. Meanwhile, information transparency is improved by equity incentives and pay incentives, and the implementation intensity of equity incentives reduces the degree of financialization. By demonstrating how CEO equity and pay incentives affect corporate innovation, this study adds to the body of literature in that field. It also offers empirical evidence to assist corporations in creating the most corporate equality and pay incentives. Future studies should continue examining the impact of non-material incentives on enterprise innovation and the relationship between equity and pay incentives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study systematically synthesizes the existing literature on work-life balance (WLB) over the last 16 years to determine the various constructs associated with it using the Antecedents, Decisions and Outcomes (ADO) model for the WLB construct. It also identifies research gaps and proposes a direction for future research. A rigorous systematic literature review (SLR) process as proposed by Tranfield et al. (2003) is followed. Further, the study uses the PRISMA framework to select the 43 full-text articles relevant to the WLB in business management. The review was conducted for the studies from 2004 to 2020, used only published articles, and excluded books and conference proceedings. This review provides an organized view of the antecedents, decision processes and outcomes of WLB in the business management domain. The analysis provides information on the most prolific authors and journals. This review also found that the most productive institutions publishing WLB-related literature are based in India. This review contributes to the literature by proposing a conceptual model that provides a theoretical understanding of WLB. In this special issue introduction, we briefly describe a variety of research paths researchers have followed to study the multifaceted phenomenon of corruption. Furthermore, we classify the papers included in this special issue according to their contribution to these research paths and briefly preview them. The article presents information related to industrial management. The Annual International Labour Process Conference remains a leading forum for critical discussion of major issues in the study of work, including capitalist and post-communist restructuring, gender and other social divisions in the workforce, the impact of new technologies, the state and employment practices, contemporary management strategies, work place democracy, occupational change and class relations, the meaning and nature of work, trade unions and worker resistance, globalization and multinationals. A workshop titled "Changing forms of Economic Organization: Firms, Markets and Work Organization," will be organized by the European Science Foundation on April 21-23, 1995. The workshop will examine the changing relations between work systems and governance structures of economic actors in different European countries as international competition increases and the number of cross-border mergers and acquisitions grows.

Since its inaugural issue in 1947, the Industrial and Labor Relations Review (ILRR) has been considered among the foremost industrial relations journals. Prominent among subjects treated by ILRR's articles in the journal's early years were collective bargaining and industrial strife, but the subject mix has changed greatly with the times. This paper employs bibliometric techniques to compare ILRR's intellectual bases across three recent periods: 1974--1984, 1985--1995, and 1996--2006. Using co-citation and network analyses, the authors identify the "invisible colleges"--research networks that refer to each other in their publications--of ILRR. Economics-oriented journals were heavily cited by ILRR authors across the entire 33-year observation period, but there is evidence that another field, human resource management, was of growing importance in the most recent years. Changes in the business, firm and managerial environment are increasing the pressures on managers to make more and better decisions, yet such managers have less time and possibly less information available to assist them. This introduces the requirement for greater insight and understanding of customers as competition increases and the use of marketing techniques becomes more ubiquitous and professional. The nature of change and the implications for managers are discussed. However, despite the need for more insightful and supportive information, many practitioners have concerns as to the reliability of qualitative data, compared with the apparent certainty and precision of numbers. This paper discusses the criteria by which qualitative data can be considered valid, and argues for a more complete and explicit understanding of the relationship between the research question, the methods employed and the criteria by which the results are substantiated. This supports the coalescence of research with strategy formulation and implementation. The confidence with which managerial decisions can be made and implemented as managers expand the range and type of information they use as the basis for decision-making is discussed. The article presents the author's views on the journal. The reception of the inaugural issue of the journal was electrifying. It has led to a heavy flow of high-quality manuscripts, new membership applications, and library subscriptions. As of August 15, 1992, the assembly of the third issue is nearly complete. Following the commitment made in the inaugural issue to cover new challenges and opportunities, editors of the journal are proposing special issues in two areas: (1) total quality management and benchmarking, and (2) international manufacturing and service operations. A number of senior executives and many of the leading academics who work in these areas have agreed to serve as special editors and reviewers. This issue, much like the preceding one, represents the rich diversity of our field. In the first paper, "An exploratory study of patterns of priorities and trade-offs among operations managers," authors Caron St. John and Scott Young describe a survey of 15 firms that shows that agreement among operations managers on competitive priorities is related to long-run strategic trade-offs and not on short-run trade-offs. In the second paper, "Load cubing at R.J. Reynolds," authors Oscar CIarza, Alex Golub, Jack Luper, and Alan Neebe describe a microcomputer-based decision support system that saves $850,000 per year in loading cases of finished product into truck trailers.

Throughout their business life cycle, firms may experience financial distress. Successful emergence from such distress is important to their multiple stakeholders. Using a sample of publicly listed firms in China that emerged from Special Treatment (an indicator of delisting risk), we focus on the key actions such firms take prior to emergence, namely, fixing the core of the business and earnings management. We examine how these actions are associated with sustainable emergence, which we define as emergence from Special Treatment without reentry in the next 5 years. Consistent with the expectation that shortcut fixes to problems do not yield a long-term solution, we find that repairing the core of the business by improving operating efficiency is positively associated with sustainable emergence, whereas earnings management is negatively associated with it. We also find that the positive (negative) association between fixing the core (earnings management) and sustainable emergence is pronounced only for state-owned enterprises. This case study paper is the result of a project conducted on behalf of a company, hereon referred to as Midwest Assembly and Manufacturing or MAAN. The company's operations include component manufacturing, painting, and assembling products. The company also purchases a relatively large percentage of components and major assemblies that are needed to support final assembly operations. MAAN uses its own returnable containers to transport purchased parts from suppliers. Due to poor tracking of the containers, the company has been experiencing lost containers and occasional production disruptions at its facility well as at the supplier sites. The objective of this project was to develop a proposal to enable MAAN to more effectively track and manage its returnable containers. The research activities in support of this project included the analysis and documentation of both the physical flow and the information flow associated with the containers as well as some of the technologies that can help with automatic identification and tracking of containers. The focal point of this paper is on a macro-level approach for the analysis of container and information flow within the logistics chain. A companion paper deals with several of the automatic identification technologies that have the potential to improve the management of MAAN's returnable containers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to bring together temporal and spatial notions into a different set of axiologic pairs, and to trace examples in which such a set of pairs might be illuminating in accounts of how environmental issues are perceived in various social science disciplines. The paper begins with a division of time into reified clock time (chronos] and timely kairos time, together with a spatial division between abstract space (chora) and concrete place (topos). To better comprehend these originally Greek spatial and temporal notions, some Aristotelian concepts of human action will also be used (i.e. theoria/episteme poiesis/ techne and praxis/phronesis). These extended notions of human action, time and space/place are discussed in conjunction with aesthetics, ethics and environmental issues in the different organizational settings of science, mass media, business management and environmentalism. In this paper we explore how a historical strategic resource (HSR) could be used by an organization. We propose that within an organization, HSR is both an asset and an arena for power struggle. Our contributions stand at several levels at the crossroads of strategic management and organizational studies. First, we show the importance of various stakeholders in constructing a HSR. Second, we highlight its complexity due to its embeddedness with history. The fact that a HSR could be akin to a public good implies that its rents are difficult to control for organizations. To uncover what is meant by a historical resource, we first present a review of the resource-based theory and the uses of the past in organizations from the perspective of organization theory and organizational history. We then present our fieldwork, which focuses on Emmaus, a major charity organization in France, and its founder, Abbé Pierre. Based on a historical study covering the period 1949 to 2017 drawing on the organization's archives, online publications and data from the French national audiovisual archives, we identify visual and rhetorical elements that constitute Abbé Pierre and his past as HSR for the Emmaus organization. Eventually, our paper contributes to the literature by offering a four-dimensional management framework for HSR with appropriation, ownership, maintenance and distancing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the optimal design of in-plant logistics in manufacturing. Owing to rising energy costs and the supply-demand imbalance leading to price competition, resulting in a sharp decline in profit, business management is facing a severe test, especially heavy industry. In practice, the important decision-making in C Company has relied on expert experience and existing knowledge, the lack of systematic thinking, and technology applications, resulting in a waste of logistics costs. Therefore, a study on the application of genetic algorithms to optimize steel mill factory by-product transport and logistics is presented herein. The aim is to solve the bottleneck of traditional decision-making in order to achieve the goal of optimizing transportation logistics decision-making via artificial intelligence. In defining the problem, the model of the steel mill factory by-products transport and logistics is constructed through in-plant route information, vehicle routing systematization and consideration of the transport demand frequency. The modified variable length chromosome ending technique and bi-level genetic algorithm are used to effectively solve the problem of different zoning transportation on double layer genetic algorithm application. This article provides fresh insights into the life of Henry L. Gantt by examining the papers of Duncan C. Lyle (1847-1938), Grant's confidant, friend, and former teacher at the McDonogh's School in Maryland. Lyle's papers at the McDonogh School include previously unrecorded articles and personal letters of Gantt's along with articles about him. These materials reveal new information about Gantt during his collaboration with Frederick W. Taylor and during his later years when he acted independently. This article reports the use of a two-phase approach to developing marketing skills in the beginning marketing student. Phase one consists of a student team analysis of an existing company's marketing strategy, while phase two requires the individual student to develop an original marketing strategy. These two phases, which dovetail nicely, provide the student with the opportunity to use marketing concepts. Robert F. (Bob) Lusch has made many contributions to scholarly research on macromarketing, especially on how business —and especially marketing– can and should contribute to society. His insights are important in understanding how business practices are evolving over time. In addition, they are prescient in identifying new ways for scholarly research in business and marketing to be useful to society. This tribute briefly describes how Bob Lusch's ideas are reflected in management and marketing practices today. The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been the object of study by the academic world in recent years, however, despite the large number of published works, there are still many gaps in its conceptualization and the implications it has on business management. In this sense, despite the great interdisciplinarity of the concept, a large part of academic production is focused on the field of business, something that has limited the construction of new research perspectives which will allow to continue expanding in knowledge. The objective of this work is to provide evidence of the scientific production developed in the field of CSR that serves as a basis for researchers in making strategic decisions about the orientation of their work, taking into account new perspectives based on the impact generated by the publications in the different research areas. For this, a search of existing publications on the Web of Science (WoS) was carried out. The analysis of the results was developed through the use of the InCites citation analysis tool, which made it possible to evaluate the productivity and performance of the research developed. The results show the existence of research areas with low productivity in the topic under study, but with a high impact of their publications. It is concluded that publication in these research areas should be a priority for researchers, who, by directing their work toward them, might open up new research perspectives and continue to delve into the concept. This paper contributes to the emerging literature on inhabited institutions. It argues that institutional entrepreneurship, as most social action, is not an individual-bounded endeavor, at the hands of isolated individuals, but a group-bounded one, at the hands of social individuals inhabiting groups which motivate, inspire, and enable their engagement. The inhabited group-bounded conceptualization offered helps to overcome voluntaristic biases and atemporalism plaguing much micro research on institutional entrepreneurship. Even though leadership has been a major topic of research in psychology and management for almost a century, many of its concepts and debates have not yet been adopted in entrepreneurship and small business management. As a field, entrepreneurial leadership is still evolving, lacks definitional clarity and has not yet developed appropriate tools to assess it characteristics and behaviours. This paper aims to contribute to the literature on ‘institutional maintenance work’. Focusing on the institutional disruption resulting from a regulatory project of market rationalization, it enriches the description and analysis of the specific institutional maintenance work performed by powerful actors who engage in resistance against what they perceive as a threat to their discretion. Built on an in-depth qualitative study, our case concerns an attempt to change the form of over-the-counter markets as part of a recent financial reform. The paper contributes to the expanding literature on the maintenance of institutions by suggesting, in particular, that the creation of incommensurables should be added to the list of strategies available to powerful incumbents seeking to resist institutional change. Bridging the gap between the literatures on institutional maintenance and commensuration, it also demonstrates that specific institutional changes can usefully be understood as changes in commensuration systems. This innovatively suggests the existence of degrees of commensuration and calls for a finer-grained understanding of the institutional work required to maintain institutions in a context where the degree of commensuration experienced by a field or a market threatens to increase under coercive pressure.
