The open reduction of mandibular condyle neck fractures is difficult due to the limited surgical field and complex facial nerve structures. The most effective fixation method for narrow fractured segments is debated as standard double four-hole plate fixation is often not feasible. This research compared bone stability and force resistance between single-long-plate and double-short-plate fixations using clinical outcomes, a Sawbones mandible model, and finite element analysis. In patients with condyle neck fractures, nine were fixed with single-long-plate and twelve with double-short-plate fixations, with no significant differences in malocclusion and facial palsy rates. In compression tests with a Sawbones model, displacements in the posterior part were similar in both fixation groups. In contrast, the anterior part had significantly higher displacements in the single-long-plate group. Finite element analysis showed higher displacements in both anterior and posterior parts in the single-plate group compared to the double-short-plate group. Maximum stresses were at the second screw hole in single-long-plate fixation and the turning point of the upper plate at the condyle neck in double-short-plate fixation. Retaining pile structure is commonly utilized in excavation maintenance design. In recent years, the long-short combined retaining piles have received more and more attention. According to the actual deep excavation engineering, the working mechanism of the long-short, long-double-short, and long-triple-short combined retaining piles was tested in the field. Based on the field test parameters, the finite element model of the test area was established and the simulation results were verified, and the effects of short pile length and pile spacing on bending moment, horizontal displacement of piles, surface settlement, and excavation bottom heave were further investigated. The results show that the bending moment of the long pile is larger than the short pile. The bending moment of the long pile and short pile increases gradually with the increase in the number of short piles. When the combination changes from combination 1 to 3, the peak moment of the long pile and short pile increases by 15.8% and 15.2%, respectively. The maximum displacement is near the pile top, combination 3 has the largest horizontal displacement, and the peak displacement of the long pile and the short pile is 17.21 mm and 17.87 mm, respectively, but almost no effect exists on the horizontal displacement below the excavation bottom. In addition, reducing short pile length and increasing pile spacing will increase bending moment and horizontal displacement of the long and short piles to a certain extent, and this phenomenon is mainly concentrated above the excavation bottom, the influence of short pile length and pile spacing on surface settlement and excavation bottom heave can be ignored. The three-phase induction motor (IM) plays an essential role in industry; therefore, ensuring these motors operate under faultless and reliable conditions. Previous studies have reported that 28% to 38% of IM failures are related to the stator windings. For this reason, numerous efforts have been made to develop low-cost procedures for early fault detection in IMs. However, their primary drawback is that they involve complex mathematical operations for analyzing acquired information in the frequency or time-frequency domains, making online implementation challenging. Consequently, there remains a need for a reliable, online method to detect faulty conditions in IMs. In this work, a straightforward methodology based on the phasor-representation analysis and a fuzzy logic classifier is proposed for the online detection and classification of short-circuit faults in a three-phase IM. The signal-processing technique in this approach involves basic arithmetic operations, making it feasible for implementation on the Texas Instruments 32-bit, floating-point digital signal processor TMS320F28335. The obtained results demonstrate the efficacy and utility of the proposed methodology in detecting and classifying incipient or simultaneous short-circuit faults. Biological trickling filtration (BTF) has the advantages of simple operation, low energy consumption, and low sludge production, and its application in the treatment of domestic wastewater in rural areas has been widely discussed. In this study, ceramic granule (R1), zeolite (R2), and sponge (R3), three typical nitrogen and phosphorus removal fillers, were selected to investigate the differences in the removal performance of COD, nitrogen, and phosphorus in BTF, analyze the characteristics of the fillers and biofilm, and determine the performance of simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The results show that among the three fillers, zeolite has the larger specific surface area and roughness and has the best treatment effect on the adhesion performance of sewage and biofilm. The richness and diversity of the microbial community are higher, and the system is more stable, with a COD removal rate of 77.10 ± 8.67% and an NH4+-N removal rate of 75.20 ± 6.64%. The TP removal rate was 22.04 ± 10.27%. The surface of ceramic particles showed a regular cluster structure with a loose distribution. The removal rate of COD was 78.49 ± 6.92%, the concentration of NH4+-N in the effluent was 27.95 ± 8.23 mg/L, and the removal rate of TP was 38.83 ± 12.14%. As a polymer composite material, the sponge has large internal pores and a smooth surface, which is not conducive to biofilm adhesion. Therefore, the removal rate of nitrogen and phosphorus in sewage is poor; the removal rate of COD is 75.94 ± 6.98%, NH4+-N is 27.89 ± 21.06%, and the removal rate of TP is 14.07 ± 11.76%. Compared with the metabolic function of genes, zeolites have a more stable enzyme digestion ability than the other two fillers, and the genes related to the nitrification process (amo, hao, nxr, etc.) and functional genes encoding key enzymes related to the TCA cycle are relatively abundant. Long-range proton transfer in several conjugated proton cranes, originating from 7-hydroxy quinoline as a proton transfer platform, has been investigated theoretically by means of DFT and TD-DFT methodology. Major emphasis was given to their applicability to provide clean switching upon irradiation. The border conditions require the existence of a single enol tautomer in the ground state, which under excitation through a series of consecutive exited and ground state intramolecular proton transfer steps is transferred to the keto tautomer. It was shown that the most suitable candidates are based on using iso-quinoline, pyrimidine and 4-nitropyridine as proton crane units. Their suitability is a function of aromaticity changes, the basicity of the nitrogen atom from the proton crane unit and the structural effects originating from their conjugation with 7-hydroxy quinoline. This paper puts forward a selection principle and an optimization configuration method for short-circuit current-limiting measures to address the increasingly severe short-circuit current-exceeding problem brought about by the high-speed development of large power grids. Firstly, we introduce the function principle and the advantages and disadvantages of various short-circuit current-limiting measures in the power system and give the selection conditions of generalized short-circuit current-limiting measures. Then, we adopt the hierarchical analysis method (AHP) and entropy weighting method (EWM) to evaluate the weights of the indicators of the short-circuit current level, the line-loading level, the active loss, and the economic cost; perform the selection of multiple short-circuit current-limiting schemes after the combination of the assigned weights; and describe the generalized process of engineering used to solve the problem of short-circuit currents exceeding limits. We then provide a generalized process with which to solve the short-circuit current-exceeding problem in engineering. Finally, we take the actual large-scale power grid as an example, propose multiple short-circuit current-limiting schemes for a 220 kV power grid, and carry out the selection of optimal schemes to verify the validity and reliability of the study. The results show that this process plays an important role in controlling the short-circuit current of the power system, maintaining the safe and stable operation of the power system and improving the power system's grid structure. Accurate specimen marking is crucial during breast cancer surgery to avoid misorientation, which can lead to inadequate re-excision and tumor recurrence. We studied the marking methods at various breast cancer centers to create a tool that would prevent specimen misorientation. An online questionnaire was used to survey marking procedures at major breast cancer centers in Hungary, and a tool was developed using a troubleshooting method. Twelve out of twenty units responded (60%). Nine use an institutionally standardized marking system. Less than half of the surgical teams found specimen mammograms to be unambiguous. In more than 70% of departments, pathologists were uncertain about breast specimen orientation. Ambiguous marking methods caused orientation errors in half of the cases, while unclear marking directions caused the rest. Most pathologists (85%) and surgeons (75%) believed that coronal plane specimen mammography would help solve the problem. A plastic specimen plate has been developed to anchor breast tissue to a coronal breast scheme as seen in mammography images, providing clear localization information throughout the surgical process. There is a lack of standardization in breast specimen orientation and marking in Hungary. The problem of getting rid of expensive and metal-intensive current transformers has been declared by CIGRE as strategically important for the electric power industry. However, almost all traditional current protections receive information from measuring current transformers. In this work, a resource-saving reed switch overcurrent protection without current transformers is suggested, which can be used as an alternative to traditional current protections for 6–10 kV electrical installations connected to a switchgear cell. The protection is designed following the novel method we have developed based on inductance coils. Inductance coils measure the electromotive force under different operation modes of an electrical installation and at different points inside the switchgear cell it is connected to; the EMF values are recalculated in the values of magnetic induction, and reed switches are mounted instead of inductance coils at the points where the magnetic induction is maximal. Moreover, these values are sufficient to detect phase-to-phase short circuits in the electrical installation. The dependence of the induction value on the position of an inductance coil inside the cell is derived with the use of the simplest formula of the Biot–Savart law. The results can be used at large and small industrial enterprises, electric power stations, and substations of plants; they can be interesting for the scientific community because they help to solve the topical problem of the electric power industry. Ferroresonance in power networks is a dangerous phenomenon, which may result in overcurrents and overvoltages, causing damage to power equipment and the faulty operation of protection systems. For this reason, the possibility of the occurrence of ferroresonance has to be identified, and adequate methods need to be incorporated to eliminate or reduce its effects. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of ferroresonance damping in auxiliary power systems of high-voltage substations by selected damping devices. Laboratory experiments, the results of which created bases for the development of models of selected damping devices, are presented. These models were used to simulate the effectiveness of ferroresonance damping in an auxiliary power system of a 220/110 kV substation in the EMTP-ATP program. The analyses showed that control systems with different algorithms of operation are used in damping devices. This knowledge is important when selecting parameters and settings of the applied damping devices for a given network and the disturbances in it. The presented research results have proved the effectiveness of commercially available damping devices, provided their parameters are correctly coordinated with the settings of the power system protection. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an important independent risk factor for stroke. Current guidelines handle AF as a binary entity with risk driven by the presence of clinical risk factors, which guides the decision to treat with an oral anticoagulant. Recent studies in the literature suggest a dose–response relationship between AF burden and stroke risk, in both clinical AF and subclinical atrial fibrillation (SCAF), which differs from current guidance to disregard burden and utilize clinical risk scores alone. Within clinical classification and at the same risk levels in various scores, the risk of stroke increases with AF burden. This opens the possibility of incorporating burden into risk profiles, which has already shown promise. Long-term rhythm monitoring is needed to elucidate SCAF in patients with stroke. Recent data from randomized trials are controversial regarding whether there is an independent risk from AF episodes with a duration of less than 24 h, including the duration of SCAF greater than six minutes but less than 24 h. In recent years, biomedical optics technology has developed rapidly. The current widespread use of biomedical optics was made possible by the invention of optical instruments. The advantages of being non-invasive, portable, effective, low cost, and less susceptible to system noise have led to the rapid development of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) technology for hemodynamics detection, especially in the field of functional brain imaging. At the same time, laboratories and companies have developed various fNIRS-based systems. The safety, stability, and efficacy of fNIRS systems are key performance indicators. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive and systematic evaluation methods for fNIRS instruments. This study uses the fNIRS system developed in our laboratory as the test object. The test method established in this study includes system validation and performance testing to comprehensively assess fNIRS systems' reliability. These methods feature low cost and high practicality. Based on this study, existing or newly developed systems can be comprehensively and easily evaluated in the laboratory or workspace. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) can dynamically respond to the relevant state of brain activity based on the hemodynamic information of brain tissue. The cerebral cortex and gray matter are the main regions reflecting brain activity. As they are far from the scalp surface, the accuracy of brain activity detection will be significantly affected by a series of physiological activities. In this paper, an effective algorithm for extracting brain activity information is designed based on the measurement method of dual detectors so as to obtain real brain activity information. The principle of this algorithm is to take the measurement results of short-distance channels as reference signals to eliminate the physiological interference information in the measurement results of long-distance channels. In this paper, the performance of the proposed method is tested using both simulated and measured signals and compared with the extraction results of EEMD-RLS, RLS and fast-ICA, and their extraction effects are quantified by correlation coefficient (R), root-mean-square error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE). The test results show that even under low SNR conditions, the proposed method can still effectively suppress physiological interference and improve the detection accuracy of brain activity signals. The ansa cervicalis (AC) is a neural loop within the carotid triangle of the anterior neck. The loop is traditionally formed by nerve roots C1–C3 of the cervical plexus and extends multiple motor branches. The current case was discovered during a routine dissection as an anatomical variation of the right AC in an 86-year-old Caucasian male cadaver. In this variation, the C1 nerve root did not form the typical loop with the C2 and C3 nerve roots, but instead, remained independent, traveling deep to the superior belly of the omohyoid muscle to supply the sternothyroid muscle. Because no loop was formed, the anatomy of the current case was not an ansa according to the Latin origin of the word, meaning handle or loop. The AC is an important anatomical landmark within the neck and is implicated in laryngeal reinnervation and respiratory nerve stimulation for patients with sleep apnea. The current anatomical variant contributes to a relatively limited catalog of identified anomalies. Knowledge of new AC variations can guide future surgical interventions and further develop the current base of knowledge surrounding the neuromuscular structures of the head and neck. Detecting and classifying the modulation type of the intercepted noisy LPI (low probability of intercept) radar signals in real-time is a necessary survival technique in the electronic intelligence systems. Most radar signals have been designed to have LPI properties; therefore, the LPI radar waveform recognition technique (LWRT) has recently gained increasing attention. In this paper, we propose a multiple feature images joint decision (MFIJD) model with two different feature extraction structures that fully extract the pixel feature to obtain the pre-classification results of each feature image for the non-stationary characteristics of most LPI radar signals. The core technology of this model is combining the short-time autocorrelation feature image, double short-time autocorrelation feature image and the original signal time-frequency image (TFI) simultaneously input into the hybrid model classifier, which is suitable for non-stationary signals, and it has higher universality. We demonstrate the performance of MFIJD by simulating 11 types of the signals defined in this paper and generating training sets and test sets. The comparison with the literature shows that the proposed methods not only has a high universality for LPI radar signals, but also better adapts to LPI radar waveform recognition at low SNR (signal to noise ratio) environment. Common overcurrent criteria used to detect phase-to-phase short circuits in medium-voltage (MV) networks in some cases do not bring the expected results. In particular, this applies to instantaneous overcurrent protections in lines with variable ranges and lines leading to local power plants (LPP), which generate a short-circuit current slightly greater than the rated current. When using overcurrent protections, there are some problems with ensuring the appropriate sensitivity and selectivity. This article proposes a protection based on impedance measurement against the effects of phase-to-phase short circuits in MV lines. The protection can be used at switchgears and also at protection points (PP) located deep in the network. The under-impedance criterion has a range independent of the value of the short-circuit current, and it can be alternative or complement to classic overcurrent protection. The introduction of these criteria allows the protection range to be independent of the type of short circuit and the short-circuit power on the busbar, and to determine this range more precisely. The under-impedance protection is particularly useful in conditions of a growing number of energy sources deep inside the networks and its automation. The main idea was to develop a uncomplicated characteristic that would ensure the possibility of setting the under-impedance protection by people who are not specialists in the field of distance protections. In the pursuit of China's dual carbon goals, identifying spatio-temporal changes in industrial carbon emission efficiency and their influencing factors in cities at different stages of development is the key to effective formulation of countermeasures to promote the low-carbon transformation of Chinese national industry and achieve high-quality economic development. In this study, we used balanced panel data of 270 Chinese cities from 2005 to 2020 as a research object: (1) to show spatio-temporal evolution patterns in urban industrial carbon emission efficiency; (2) to analyze the aggregation characteristics of industrial carbon emission efficiency in Chinese cities using Global Moran's I statistics; and (3) to use the hierarchical regression model for panel data to assess the non-linear impact of the digital economy on the industrial carbon emission efficiency of cities. The results show the following: (1) the industrial carbon emission efficiency of Chinese cities exhibited an upward trend from 2005 to 2020, with a spatial distribution pattern of high in the south and low in the north; (2) China's urban industrial carbon emission efficiency is characterized by significant spatial autocorrelation, with increasing and stabilizing correlation, and a relatively fixed pattern of spatial agglomeration; (3) there is a significant inverted-U-shaped relationship between the digital economy and the industrial carbon emission efficiency of cities. The digital economy increases carbon emissions and inhibits industrial carbon emission efficiency in the early stages of development but inhibits carbon emissions and promotes industrial carbon emission efficiency in mature developmental stages. Therefore, cities at all levels should reduce pollution and carbon emissions from high-energy-consuming and high-polluting enterprises, gradually reduce carbon-intensive industries, and accelerate the digital transformation and upgrading of enterprises. Western, central, and eastern regions especially should seek to promote the sharing of innovation resources, strengthen exchanges and interactions relating to scientific and technological innovation, and jointly explore coordinated development routes for the digital economy. The development of modern power systems is directly related to changes in the traditional principles of management, planning, and monitoring of electrical modes. The mass introduction of renewable energy sources and control devices based on power electronics components contributes to changing the nature of the flow of transient and quasi-established electrical modes. In this area, the problem arises of conducting a more accurate and rapid assessment of the parameters of the electrical regime using synchronized vector measurement devices. The paper presents an extensive meta-analysis of the modern applications of phasor measurement units (PMUs) for monitoring, emergency management and protection of power systems. As a result, promising research directions, the advantages and disadvantages of the existing approaches to emergency management, condition assessment, and relay protection based on PMUs are identified. Electric vehicles (EVs) have gained considerable attention in the last decade due to a paradigm shift in the transport sector driven by a higher awareness of environmental issues. While the importance of EVs cannot be overstated in the context of the global climate crisis, it does raise the question of whether certain countries or states are ready for their implementation. It is, therefore, necessary to analyze the impact of EVs in the power grids of these countries and states, considering factors such as line congestion and the eventual degradation of voltage profiles, to determine their hosting capacity and assess eventual expansion options. This paper proposes a representative prototype of Curaçao's electrical system, which is used for assessing the impacts of EVs, allowing us to determine its hosting capacity. Curaçao is an island in the southern Caribbean Sea that uses fuel generators, wind energy, and solar energy to generate electricity. The idea behind this paper is to analyze the effects caused by an increase in EVs on Curaçao's power grid and propose preventive measures to deal with such problems. Eight EV charging stations were considered, one DC super fast-charging station, three normal DC fast-charging stations, and four AC fast-charging stations. In 2022, there were an estimated 82,360 vehicles on the island. Using this information, this paper analyzes how many vehicles can be simultaneously connected to the grid before it no longer operates under acceptable values. The results showed that 3.5% of the total vehicles can be hosted by the grid. Nonetheless, this can be increased up to 4.5% with the reinforcement of a transmission line. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Through our present study, three novel Gemini-fluorinated cationic surfactants bearing different spacers (FSG6-2, FSG6-4, and FSG6-6) were synthesized, and their structures were explained via different spectroscopic instruments such as 1H, 13C, and 19F NMR spectra. The surface activity of the as-prepared surfactants was examined. The inhibiting influence of FSG6 molecules on the X60 steel corrosion in the pickling solution (HCl) was examined by diverse methods comprising electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experimentations, and computational calculations. The inhibition effectiveness of FSG6 surfactants followed the order of 93.37% (FSG6-2) < 96.74% (FSG6-4) < 98.37% (FSG6-6) at 2.0 × 10−4 M. The FSG6 surfactants function as mixed-type inhibitors, according to PDP investigations. The H2O molecules that adsorbed on the steel interface were substituted with surfactant molecules, and the surfactant's inhibitory activity is likely caused by the improvement in an adsorptive layer on the steel substrate, as specified by the EIS results. The Langmuir isotherm describes the absorption of FSG6 molecules on the metal surface. The XPS investigations validate the steel interface's extremely protective nature. Affected by high ground stress, the surrounding rock control of a roadway is one of the most important factors restricting the utilization of deep resources. Therefore, it is necessary to propose a method to improve the stress environment of the deep-buried roadway and reduce its deformation. The article focuses on the 121,302 machine roadway in Kouzidong coal mine to analyze the large deformations of roadways near goafs (RNGs) in deep coal mines and reveal the mechanisms related to pressure relief via roof cutting. Through physical simulation, overburdened structures and the migration laws of RNGs in deep coal mines are studied, and the overburdened RNGs will eventually have a double short-arm "F"-type suspended roof structure. The superposition movement of the structure is the prime cause for the large deformation of the RNGs considered here. Artificial roof cutting can weaken the superposition effect of the double "F" structure and induce the roof to produce a new fracture. Meanwhile, sliding deformation along the fault line releases greater stress, and the cut roof can better fill the goaf. The stress distribution ratio between goafs and the coal pillar is improved. Here, a mechanical model of key block B' (KBB') is considered and the stability criterion of KBB' is obtained. According to the theoretical calculation here, the stress of a coal pillar could be reduced by 19.14% when KBB' is cut along the edge of the coal pillar in the 121,302 machine roadway. After engineering verification, the field observation result shows that the deformation of the 121,302 machine roadway is reduced by more than 50% after roof cutting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cardiac masses are currently studied using multimodality imaging. For diagnosis, different imaging techniques that can provide complementary information are used. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become a fundamental tool for this type of pathology owing to its ability to provide tissue characterization, spatial accuracy, and the anatomic relationships of the different structures. This study presents a series of four clinical cases with an initial diagnosis of a cardiac mass. All cases were evaluated at a single center, and patients were aged 57 to 72 years. An etiological study was conducted on all patients using different imaging techniques, including MRI. This study describes the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of the four cases, which included two intracardiac metastases and two benign tumors. Cardiac MRI was decisive in the diagnostic process, determining the clinical decision-making in all four cases. Cardiac MRI has emerged as a pivotal technique in the diagnosis of cardiac masses. The Government of the Indonesian Republic has targeted an increase in the value of shrimp exports and production until 250% by 2024. Thus, a special strategy is needed to develop whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) culture that can increase production but does not negatively impact the aquatic environment. For this reason, research was carried out to obtain a strategy for developing sustainable intensive/super-intensive technology of whiteleg shrimp culture in South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. The activity was conducted in South Sulawesi Province from March to July 2021. The data were collected from questionnaires submitted to respondents or actors, namely whiteleg shrimp brackishwater pond managers and other stakeholders and structured observations on whiteleg shrimp ponds. The validity of the questionnaire was tested using Corrected Item-Total Correlation method and the reliability was tested using Cronbach's alpha method. Another primary data source was obtained through Focus Group Discussion. Data analysis was undertaken using the Analytical Hierarchy Process method. The research results show that, of the 18 intensive/super-intensive technology of whiteleg shrimp farming businesses operating in Bulukumba, Je'neponto, and Takalar Regencies, only one whitleg shrimp farming business applies super-intensive technology. The main problems in intensive/super-intensive whiteleg shrimp culture are disease attacks, namely acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease or early mortality syndrome and white feces disease and the inconsistent quality of seed. Among the four criteria studied, it was found that environmental factor criteria are the most influential in developing intensive/super-intensive technology of whiteleg shrimp culture. Among the seven alternative strategies, the order of priority of the alternative strategies is environmental protection of culture, management of culture areas, modern technological innovation, environmentally friendly culture technology, easy access to business and capital, improvement of human resources, and availability of pond facilities. Background and objectives: Epicardial adipose tissue density (EAD) has been associated with coronary arteries calcium score, a higher load of coronary artery disease (CAD) and plaque vulnerability. This effect can be related to endocrine and paracrine effect of molecules produced by epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), that may influence myocardial contractility. Using coronary computed tomography angiography (CCT) the evaluation of EAD is possible in basal scans. The aim of the study is to investigate possible associations between EAD and cardiac function. Material and Methods: 93 consecutive patients undergoing CCT without and with contrast medium for known or suspected coronary CAD were evaluated. EAD was measured on basal scans, at the level of the coronary ostia, the lateral free wall of the left ventricle, at the level of the cardiac apex, and at the origin of the posterior interventricular artery. Cardiac function was evaluated in post-contrast CT scans in order to calculate ejection fraction (EF), end-diastolic volume (EDV), end-systolic volume (ESV), and stroke volume (SV). Results: A statistically significant positive correlation between EAD and ejection fraction (r = 0.29, p-value < 0.01) was found. Additionally, a statistically significant negative correlation between EAD and ESV (r = −0.25, p-value < 0.01) was present. Conclusion: EAD could be considered a new risk factor associated with reduced cardiac function. Cochlear implant (CI) users with prelingual deafness (hearing impairment started before language development was completed) show variable speech-in-noise (SIN) understanding. The present study aimed to assess cortical activation patterns to speech-in-quiet (SIQ) and SIN in prelingual CI users and compared to individuals with normal hearing (NH), using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS). Participants included 15 NH who listened to natural speech, 15 NH who listened via 8-channel noise-excited vocoder, and 14 prelingual CI users. fNIRS data were collected in a block design that included three conditions: SIQ, SIN in a signal-to-noise ratio of 0 dB, and noise. Speech reception thresholds in noise (SRTn) were also assessed. Results revealed different patterns of activation between the NH and CI participants in channels covering mainly the right and left middle temporal gyrus (MTG), depending on the SRTn of the CI users. Specifically, while the NH group showed large response to SIQ and SIN in the MTG areas, prelingual CI users with poor SRTn showed significantly smaller response to SIQ, and inversed response (a reduction in activation) to SIN in the same brain areas. Improving the utilization rate of pesticides is key to achieve a reduction and synergism, and adding appropriate surfactant to pesticide preparation is an effective way to improve pesticide utilization. Fluorinated surfactants have excellent surface activity, thermal and chemical stability, but long-chain linear perfluoroalkyl derivatives are highly toxic, obvious persistence and high bioaccumulation in the environment. Therefore, new strategies for designing fluorinated surfactants which combine excellent surface activity and environmental safety would be useful. In this study, four non-ionic gemini surfactants with short fluorocarbon chains were synthesized. The surface activities of the resulting surfactants were assessed on the basis of equilibrium surface tension, dynamic surface tension, and contact angle. Compared with their monomeric counterparts, the gemini surfactants had markedly lower critical micelle concentrations and higher diffusivities, as well as better wetting abilities. We selected a single-chain surfactant and a gemini surfactant with good surface activities as synergists for the glyphosate water agent. Both surfactants clearly improved the efficacy of the herbicide, but the gemini surfactant had a significantly greater effect than the single-chain surfactant. Studies have been steadily conducted on the forming process of the bending pipe that enables the transport of underground resources. Recently, it has been suggested that bent pipes for transport withstand high pressure during the forming process, but it is judged that the research on methods able to overcome the limitations of non-uniform dimensional distribution due to the difference in the mechanical properties and thickness of the outer and inner pipes is insufficient. This study proposes a new precision forging method called the cut-forged-joint process (CFJP) for the manufacture of bent pipe containing bi-metal. The initial billet and mandrel were designed considering the standard dimensions of bent pipes, and pre-simulation was performed applied to the designed models. The results of dimensional accuracy obtained by forging experiments and the computational forming simulation were compared with each other to verify the reliability. As a final outcome, it was confirmed that it is possible to secure the dimensional accuracy of bi-metal bent pipes by applying the newly proposed CFJP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(1) Background: Aqua-walking in a natural environment is a health promoting physical activity that is gaining popularity and appropriate for a variety of populations, however, to date, there is little scientific evidence supporting the efficacy and safety of this activity for older adults. The objective was to propose a preliminary exploration of psychometric and metabolic responses to an acute Aqua walking session either during winter or summer in older adults Aqua walking exercisers. (2) Methods: Heart rate, body temperature, glycemia, and blood pressure were monitored in 37 (30 women, 7 men) participants aged 52 to 83 years old in two Aqua walking sessions (water at 13 °C and 18.5 °C, respectively). Anthropometry (body weight, waist, and hip circumferences), body composition, physical activity level, sedentary time, sleep quality, quality of life, physical self-perception, and perceived health and feelings on various parameters were also assessed. (3) Results: Present results revealed a greater quality of life, physical self-perception, and perceived health in aging Aqua walking exercisers compared to those found in the literature in younger populations. None of the metabolic or psychometric measurements were found to be different between classically calibrated Aqua walking sessions performed in winter compared to summer. By contrast, there was a time effect during the sessions for body temperature (p < 0.001), SBP (p = 0.17), perceived mental and physical well-being (p = 0.006 and p < 0.001, respectively), and anxiety (p < 0.001). Leg discomfort also showed a time effect (p = 0.0009) and interaction effect (p = 0.025). (4) Conclusion: Aqua walking appears here to be an accessible practice that can be performed all year long with a range of physical and mental benefits for older adults. Owing to the high contrast of the refractive indices at the end facets of a nanowire, lasing emission can be achieved in an individual nanowire without external, reflected feedback. However, the reflection provided by the end facet is not high enough to lower the threshold gain, especially for nanowires with smaller diameters. This work proposes a novel structure of nanowire laser partially sandwiched in double Ag gratings. Compared to a nanowire with a single metal grating or without a grating, the parallel double metal gratings play the reflector role with higher reflectivity to enhance the round-trip feedback and reduce the threshold gain. The reflective properties are calculated using the finite elements method. Simulation results show that a high reflectivity of more than 90% can be achieved when the number of periods is more than 8. The reflectivity of double gratings is 2.4 times larger than that of the nanowire end facet for large nanowire diameters. When the nanowire has a small diameter of 150 nm, the reflectivity of double gratings is 17 times larger than that of the nanowire end facet. Compared to a single grating, the reflective performance of double gratings is much better. Owing to the highly reflective properties of the double gratings, nanowires partially sandwiched in the double gratings can realize lasing emission at a very low threshold gain, and the period of the grating can be very short to benefit on-chip interconnection systems. In this paper, a conventional road bitumen with penetration grade 100–130 is compounded with tar in order to obtain bitumen with improved low temperature resistance. The low temperature (at −24 °C, −30 °C and −36 °C) resistance of the virgin bitumen and the compounded one is evaluated by testing on a bending beam rheometer. It was found that the optimum compounding (20% of tar by weight) decreases the stiffness essentially (from 18% to 34%), i.e., it increases the low temperature resistance of the bitumen. The stiffness decreases in the compounded bitumen can be explained by quantitative variations in its group chemical composition and molecular fragments. It is worldwide known that the most common type of cancer among women is breast cancer. Traditional procedures involve surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy; however, these treatments are invasive and have serious side effects. For this reason, minimally invasive thermal treatments like microwave ablation are being considered. In this study, thermal behavior of three types of slot-coaxial antennas for breast cancer microwave ablation is presented. By using finite element method (FEM), all antennas were modeled to estimate the heat transfer in breast tumor tissue surrounded by healthy breast tissue. Experimentation was carried out by using the antennas inserted inside sphere-shaped-tumor phantoms with two different diameters, 1.0 and 1.5 cm. A microwave radiation system was used to apply microwave energy to each designed antenna, which were located into the phantom. A non-interfering thermometry system was used to measure the temperature increase during the experimentation. Temperature increases, recorded by the thermal sensors placed inside the tumor phantom surrounded by healthy breast phantom, were used to validate the FEM models. The results conclude that, in all the cases, after 240 s, the three types of coaxial slot antenna reached the temperature needed produce hyperthermia of the tumor volume considered in this paper. Doxorubicin represents a valuable choice for different cancers, although the severe side effects occurring at the high effective dose limits its clinical use. In the present study, potential strategies to potentiate low-dose doxorubicin efficacy, including a metronomic schedule, characterized by a short and repeated exposure to the anticancer drug, and the combination with the natural chemosensitizing sesquiterpenes β-caryophyllene and β-caryophyllene oxide, were assessed in human hepatoma HepG2 cells. The involvement of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in the HepG2–chemosensitization to doxorubicin was evaluated. Also, the direct interaction of caryophyllene sesquiterpenes with P-gp was characterized by molecular docking and dynamic simulation studies. A metronomic schedule allowed us to enhance the low-dose doxorubicin cytotoxicity and the combination with caryophyllane sesquiterpenes further potentiated this effect. Also, an increased intracellular accumulation of doxorubicin and rhodamine 123 induced by caryophyllane sesquiterpenes was found, thus suggesting their interference with P-gp function. A lowered expression of P-gp induced by the combinations, with respect to doxorubicin alone, was observed too. Docking studies found that the binding site of caryophyllane sesquiterpene was next to the ATP binding domain of P-gp and that β-caryophyllene possessed the stronger binding affinity and higher inhibition potential calculated by MM-PBSA. Present findings strengthen our hypothesis about the potential chemosensitizing power of caryophyllane sesquiterpenes and suggest that combining a chemosensitizer and a metronomic schedule can represent a suitable strategy to overcome drawbacks of doxorubicin chemotherapy while exploiting its powerful activity. Providing efficient ventilation in road tunnels is essential to prevent severe air pollution exposure for both drivers and pedestrians in such enclosed spaces with heavy vehicle emissions. Longitudinal ventilation methods like commercial jet fans have been widely applied and confirmed to be effective for introducing external fresh air into road tunnels that are shorter than 3 km. However, operating tunnel jet fans is energy consuming. Therefore, for small-scale (~100 m–1 km) road tunnels, mechanical ventilation methods might be highly energetically expensive and unaffordable. Many studies have found that the use of wind catchers could improve buildings' natural ventilation, but their effect on improving natural ventilation in small-scale road tunnels has, hitherto, rarely been studied. This paper, therefore, aims to quantify the influence of style and arrangement of one-sided flat-roof wind catchers on ventilation performance in a road tunnel. The concept of intake fraction (IF) is applied for ventilation and pollutant exposure assessment in the overall tunnel and for pedestrian regions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methodology with a standard k-epsilon turbulence model is used to perform a three-dimensional (3D) turbulent flow simulation, and CFD results have been validated by wind-tunnel experiments for building cross ventilation. Results show that the introduction of wind catchers would significantly enhance wind speed at pedestrian level, but a negative velocity reduction effect and a near-catcher recirculation zone can also be found. A special downstream vortex extending along the downstream tunnel is found, helping remove the accumulated pollutants away from the low-level pedestrian sides. Both wind catcher style and arrangement would significantly influence the ventilation performance in the tunnel. Compared to long-catcher designs, short-catchers would be more effective for providing fresh air to pedestrian sides due to a weaker upstream velocity reduction effect and smaller near-catcher recirculation zone. In long-catcher cases, IF increases to 1.13 ppm when the wind catcher is positioned 240 m away from the tunnel entrance, which is almost twice that in short-catcher cases. For the effects of catcher arrangements, single, short-catcher, span-wise, shifting would not help dilute pollutants effectively. Generally, a design involving a double short-catcher in a parallel arrangement is the most recommended, with the smallest IF, i.e., 61% of that in the tunnel without wind catchers (0.36 ppm). The present article investigates in laboratory conditions the effect of cyclic freezing and thawing (CFT) on characteristics of the neat bitumen and bitumens modified with different polymers, as well as stone mastic asphalt concretes prepared with the use of the neat and the modified bitumens. Maximal and minimal temperature in cycles of freezing and thawing (FT) is accepted equal to +20 °C and −18 ± 2 °C respectively. Characteristics of low temperature resistance of bitumens (stiffness S and m-value) have been determined on bending beam rheometer at the temperatures of −24 °C, −30 °C, and −36 °C. Strength at direct tension of the stone mastic asphalt concretes has been evaluated in the device TRAVIS (Infratest Ltd., Brackenheim, Germany) at the temperatures of 0 °C, −10 °C, −20 °C, and −30 °C. Resistance of stone mastic asphalt concretes to rutting has been determined on a Hamburg wheel tracking machine. The characteristics of the bitumens have been determined in the initial condition and after 25 and 50 cycles of FT, and the characteristics of stone mastic asphalt concretes, in the initial condition and after 50 cycles of FT. The results obtained experimentally have shown that CFT impacts essentially on the investigated characteristics of bitumens and stone mastic asphalt concretes. Modification with polymers improves the mechanical characteristics of the bitumens and decreases the effect of CFT. It is also found out that when selecting a bitumen for specific climatic conditions it is necessary to take into account both the number of cycles of FT and the characteristic low temperature. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that there are 285 million visually-impaired people worldwide. Among these individuals, there are 39 million who are totally blind. There have been several systems designed to support visually-impaired people and to improve the quality of their lives. Unfortunately, most of these systems are limited in their capabilities. In this paper, we present a comparative survey of the wearable and portable assistive devices for visually-impaired people in order to show the progress in assistive technology for this group of people. Thus, the contribution of this literature survey is to discuss in detail the most significant devices that are presented in the literature to assist this population and highlight the improvements, advantages, disadvantages, and accuracy. Our aim is to address and present most of the issues of these systems to pave the way for other researchers to design devices that ensure safety and independent mobility to visually-impaired people. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) enables the non-invasive measurement of changes in hemodynamics and oxygenation in tissue. Changes in light-coupling due to movement of the subject can cause movement artifacts (MAs) in the recorded signals. Several methods have been developed so far that facilitate the detection and reduction of MAs in the data. However, due to fixed parameter values (e.g., global threshold) none of these methods are perfectly suitable for long-term (i.e., hours) recordings or were not time-effective when applied to large datasets. We aimed to overcome these limitations by automation, i.e., data adaptive thresholding specifically designed for long-term measurements, and by introducing a stable long-term signal reconstruction. Our new technique ("acceleration-based movement artifact reduction algorithm", AMARA) is based on combining two methods: the "movement artifact reduction algorithm" (MARA, Scholkmann et al. Phys. Meas. 2010, 31, 649-662), and the "accelerometer-based motion artifact removal" (ABAMAR, Virtanen et al. J. Biomed. Opt. 2011, 16, 087005). We describe AMARA in detail and report about successful validation of the algorithm using empirical NIRS data, measured over the prefrontal cortex in adolescents during sleep. Unlike other noise sources, which can be reduced or eliminated by different signal processing techniques, shot noise is an ever-present noise component in any imaging system. In this paper, we present an in-depth study of the impact of shot noise on time-of-flight sensors in terms of the error introduced in the distance estimation. The paper addresses the effect of parameters, such as the size of the photosensor, the background and signal power or the integration time, and the resulting design trade-offs. The study is demonstrated with different numerical examples, which show that, in general, the phase shift determination technique with two background measurements approach is the most suitable for pixel arrays of large resolution. The importance of power in society is indisputable. Virtually all economic activities depend on electricity. The electric power systems are complex, and move studies in different areas are motivated to make them more efficient and solve their operational problems. The smart grids emerged from this approach and aimed to improve the current systems and integrate electric power using alternative and renewable sources. Restoration techniques of these networks are being developed to reduce the impacts caused by the usual power supply interruptions due to failures in the distribution networks. This paper presents the development and evaluation of the performance of a multi-objective version of the Bacterial Foraging Optimization Algorithm for finding the minor handling switches that maximize the number of buses served, keeping the configuration radial system and within the limits of current in the conductors and bus voltage. An electrical system model was created, and routines were implemented for the network verification, which was used as a function of the Multi-Objective Bacterial Foraging Optimization Hybrid Algorithm. The proposed method has been applied in two distribution systems with 70 buses and 201 buses, respectively, and the algorithm's effectiveness to solve the restoration problem is discussed. This work presents a detailed review of the development of distributed acoustic sensors (DAS) and their newest scientific applications. It covers most areas of human activities, such as the engineering, material, and humanitarian sciences, geophysics, culture, biology, and applied mechanics. It also provides the theoretical basis for most well-known DAS techniques and unveils the features that characterize each particular group of applications. After providing a summary of research achievements, the paper develops an initial perspective of the future work and determines the most promising DAS technologies that should be improved. This paper demonstrates the possibilities of a Geographical Information System (GIS) for investigating and explicating the spatial variation of the short-range viewshed aesthetic appeal in a World Heritage coastal dune and forest area. The study pursues the following objectives: (1) develop and trial a GIS-based algorithm for computing the Aesthetic Appeal Index for a Short-Range Viewshed (ǣ); (2) deliver an output map showing the spatial variation of the computed ǣ values in the target territory and distribution of the zones with high scenic quality and potential aesthetic ecosystem services (PAES); and (3) assess management alternatives in zones with high PAES and high conservation value. This study combines two key innovative aspects. First, it integrates an objective digital map of habitats with subjective scenic preferences of coastal forest and dune landscapes based on psychophysical and cognitive perceptions of scenic beauty. Second, it applies a GIS-based algorithm to translate subjective scenic preferences to an output map of ǣ. The study's main conclusion is that the combined aesthetic appraisal of the immediate and foreground viewshed of coastal forests and dunes, by applying a specially created GIS algorithm, allows an assessment of the scenic quality of this landscape reliably in statistical terms. Bone cancer is rare in adults, the most affected persons by this disease are young people and children. The common treatments for bone cancer are surgery, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies; however, all of them have side-effects that decrease the patient's quality of life. Thermotherapy is one of the most promising treatments for bone cancer; its main goal is to increase the tumor temperature to kill cancerous cells. Although some micro-coaxial antennas have been used to treat bone tumors, most of them are designed to treat soft tissue. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to analyze the thermal behavior of four micro-coaxial antennas specifically designed to generate thermal ablation in bone tissue to treat bone tumors, at 2.45 GHz. The proposed antennas were the metal-tip monopole (MTM), the choked metal-tip monopole (CMTM), the double slot (DS) and the choked double slot (CDS). The design and optimization of the antennas by using the Finite Element Method (FEM) allow to predict the optimal antenna dimensions and their performance when they are in contact with the affected biological tissues (bone, muscle, and fat). In the FEM model, a maximum power transmission was selected as the main parameter to choose the optimum antenna design, i.e., a Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) value around 1.2–1.5. The four optimized antennas were constructed and experimentally evaluated. The evaluation was carried out in multilayer phantoms (fat, muscle, cortical, and cancellous bone) and ex vivo porcine tissue at different insertion depths of the antennas. To fully evaluate the antennas performance, the standing wave ratio (SWR), power loss, temperature profiles, and thermal distributions were analyzed. In the experimentation, the four antennas were able to reach ablation temperatures (>60 °C) and the highest reached SWR was 1.7; the MTM (power loss around 16%) and the CDS (power loss around 6.4%) antennas presented the lowest SWR values depending on the antenna insertion depth, either in multilayer tissue phantom or in ex vivo tissue. These proposed antennas allow to obtain ablation temperatures with an input power of 5 W after 5 min of treatment; these values are lower than the ones reported in the literature. Humans are evolutionary-driven to adult mating and conceive social expectations on the quality of their affiliations. The genetic susceptibility to adverse environments in critical periods can alter close relationships. The current research investigates how the promoter region of the Serotonin Transporter Gene (5-HTTLPR) and perceived caregiving behavior in childhood could influence the social expectations on close adult relationships. For this purpose, 5-HTTLPR data was collected from the buccal mucosa of 65 Italian individuals (33 males). The participants filled (a) the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) to provide the levels of care and overprotection from mother and father, and (b) the Experience in Close Relationships-Revised (ECR-R) to report the social expectations on the intimate relationship assessed in terms of anxiety and avoidance from the partner. An interaction effect between 5-HTTLPR and PBI dimensions on the ECR-R scores was hypothesized. Results confirmed that the interplay between the genetic groups and history of maternal overprotection predicted avoidance experienced in romantic relationships in adulthood. Moreover, both adult anxiety and avoidance felt in an intimate relationship were found to covary as a function of maternal overprotection. Functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a neuroimaging technique that allows to monitor the functional hemoglobin oscillations related to cortical activity. One of the main issues related to fNIRS applications is the motion artefact removal, since a corrupted physiological signal is not correctly indicative of the underlying biological process. A novel procedure for motion artifact correction for fNIRS signals based on wavelet transform and video tracking developed for infrared thermography (IRT) is presented. In detail, fNIRS and IRT were concurrently recorded and the optodes' movement was estimated employing a video tracking procedure developed for IRT recordings. The wavelet transform of the fNIRS signal and of the optodes' movement, together with their wavelet coherence, were computed. Then, the inverse wavelet transform was evaluated for the fNIRS signal excluding the frequency content corresponding to the optdes' movement and to the coherence in the epochs where they were higher with respect to an established threshold. The method was tested using simulated functional hemodynamic responses added to real resting-state fNIRS recordings corrupted by movement artifacts. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of the procedure in eliminating noise, producing results with higher signal to noise ratio with respect to another validated method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Modifications in nucleic acids are present in all three domains of life. More than 170 distinct chemical modifications have been reported in cellular RNAs to date. Collectively termed as epitranscriptome, these RNA modifications are often dynamic and involve distinct regulatory proteins that install, remove, and interpret these marks in a site-specific manner. Covalent nucleotide modifications-such as methylations at diverse positions in the bases, polyuridylation, and pseudouridylation and many others impact various events in the lifecycle of an RNA such as folding, localization, processing, stability, ribosome assembly, and translational processes and are thus crucial regulators of the RNA metabolism. In plants, the nuclear/cytoplasmic epitranscriptome plays important roles in a wide range of biological processes, such as organ development, viral infection, and physiological means. Notably, recent transcriptome-wide analyses have also revealed novel dynamic modifications not only in plant nuclear/cytoplasmic RNAs related to photosynthesis but especially in chloroplast mRNAs, suggesting important and hitherto undefined regulatory steps in plastid functions and gene expression. Here we report on the latest findings of known plastid RNA modifications and highlight their relevance for the post-transcriptional regulation of chloroplast gene expression and their role in controlling plant development, stress reactions, and acclimation processes. A major disadvantage of inhalation therapy with continuous drug delivery is the loss of medication during expiration. Developing a breath-triggered drug release system can highly decrease this loss. However, there is currently no breath-triggered drug release directly inside the patient interface (nasal prong) for preterm neonates available due to their high breathing frequency, short inspiration time and low tidal volume. Therefore, a nasal prong with an integrated valve releasing aerosol directly inside the patient interface increasing inhaled aerosol efficiency is desirable. We integrated a miniaturized aerosol valve into a nasal prong, controlled by a double-stroke cylinder. Breathing was simulated using a test lung for preterm neonates on CPAP respiratory support. The inhalation flow served as a trigger signal for the valve, releasing humidified surfactant. Particle detection was performed gravimetrically (filter) and optically (light extinction). The integrated miniaturized aerosol valve enabled breath-triggered drug release inside the patient interface with an aerosol valve response time of <25 ms. By breath-triggered release of the pharmaceutical aerosol as a bolus during inhalation, the inhaled aerosol efficiency was increased by a factor of >4 compared to non-triggered release. In road construction, it can happen that, for different reasons, the time between hot-mix asphalt (HMA) production and paving is extended to some hours. This can be reflected in several problems such as mix cooling and temperature segregation, but also in an extremely severe bitumen ageing due to its prolonged exposure to high temperatures. This paper deals with the investigation of these phenomena both in the laboratory and on site. In particular, the first part of the research aimed at observing the influence of the conditioning time, when the loose HMA is kept in the oven at a high temperature, on the mix properties. The second part focused on the ageing/cooling that happens on site during HMA hauling, as a function of time and type of truck. Temperatures were monitored using a thermal camera and different probes, and gyratory compactor specimens were produced by sampling some HMA from the trucks every 1 h for 3 h. The results showed that HMA stiffness rises if the time when the loose mix stays in the laboratory oven before compaction increases. However, on site, the HMA volumetric and mechanical properties do not change with hauling time up to 3 h, probably because the external material in the truck bed protects the HMA core from the access of oxygen, hindering bitumen oxidation and loss of volatiles. Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is an aggressive group of biliary tract cancers, characterized by late diagnosis, low effective chemotherapies, multidrug resistance, and poor outcomes. In the attempt to identify new therapeutic strategies for CCA, we studied the antiproliferative activity of a combination between doxorubicin and the natural sesquiterpene β-caryophyllene in cholangiocarcinoma Mz-ChA-1 cells and nonmalignant H69 cholangiocytes, under both long-term and metronomic schedules. The modulation of STAT3 signaling, oxidative stress, DNA damage response, cell cycle progression and apoptosis was investigated as possible mechanisms of action. β-caryophyllene was able to synergize the cytotoxicity of low dose doxorubicin in Mz-ChA-1 cells, while producing cytoprotective effects in H69 cholangiocytes, mainly after a long-term exposure of 24 h. The mechanistic analysis highlighted that the sesquiterpene induced a cell cycle arrest in G2/M phase along with the doxorubicin-induced accumulation in S phase, reduced the γH2AX and GSH levels without affecting GSSG. ROS amount was partly lowered by the combination in Mz-ChA-1 cells, while increased in H69 cells. A lowered expression of doxorubicin-induced STAT3 activation was found in the presence of β-caryophyllene in both cancer and normal cholangiocytes. These networking effects resulted in an increased apoptosis rate in Mz-ChA-1 cells, despite a lowering in H69 cholangiocytes. This evidence highlighted a possible role of STAT3 as a final effector of a complex network regulated by β-caryophyllene, which leads to an enhanced doxorubicin-sensitivity of cholangiocarcinoma cells and a lowered chemotherapy toxicity in nonmalignant cholangiocytes, thus strengthening the interest for this natural sesquiterpene as a dual-acting chemosensitizing and chemopreventive agent. Symmetry and balance are basic concepts in art theory for the composition of pictures. It is assumed that well-balanced pictures are preferred to unbalanced ones. One of the first experimental studies to test this assumption was conducted more than a century ago by Ethel Puffer. By applying a production method, she found little evidence for the hypothesis that balance is favorable for the aesthetical appreciation of pictures. Instead, she observed that other construction principles competing with balance, such as bilateral symmetry and closeness, were applied. The aim of the present study was to repeat some of Puffer's experiments with modern methods and to examine whether her results are replicable. In two experiments, we also found little to no evidence for balance. Moreover, as in Puffer's study, participants used closeness and bilateral symmetry as principles. Numerous open-access electroencephalography (EEG) datasets have been released and widely employed by EEG researchers. However, not many functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) datasets are publicly available. More fNIRS datasets need to be freely accessible in order to facilitate fNIRS studies. Toward this end, we introduce an open-access fNIRS dataset for three-class classification. The concentration changes of oxygenated and reduced hemoglobin were measured, while 30 volunteers repeated each of the three types of overt movements (i.e., left- and right-hand unilateral complex finger-tapping, foot-tapping) for 25 times. The ternary support vector machine (SVM) classification accuracy obtained using leave-one-out cross-validation was estimated at 70.4% ± 18.4% on average. A total of 21 out of 30 volunteers scored a superior binary SVM classification accuracy (left-hand vs. right-hand finger-tapping) of over 80.0%. We report non-invasive, bilateral optical measurements on the forehead of five healthy human subjects, of 0.1 Hz oscillatory hemodynamics elicited either by cyclic inflation of pneumatic thigh cuffs, or by paced breathing. Optical intensity and the phase of photon-density waves were collected with frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy at seven source-detector distances (11–40 mm). Coherent hemodynamic oscillations are represented by phasors of oxyhemoglobin (O) and deoxyhemoglobin (D) concentrations, and by the vector D/O that represents the amplitude ratio and phase difference of D and O. We found that, on an average, the amplitude ratio (|D/O|) and the phase difference (∠(D/O)) obtained with single-distance intensity at 11–40 mm increase from 0.1° and −330° to 0.2° and −200°, respectively. Single-distance phase and the intensity slope featured a weaker dependence on source-detector separation, and yielded |D/O| and ∠(D/O) values of about 0.5 and −200°, respectively, at distances greater than 20 mm. The key findings are: (1) Single-distance phase and intensity slope are sensitive to deeper tissue compared to single-distance intensity; (2) deeper tissue hemodynamic oscillations, which more closely represent the brain, feature D and O phasors that are consistent with a greater relative flow-to-volume contributions in brain tissue compared to extracerebral, superficial tissue.
