Lane-changing prewarning is an active management measure used to mitigate the impact of incidents on expressways. This measure affects the operational efficiency and safety of traffic flow upstream of the incident location. To evaluate the effectiveness of this measure in mitigating incident-induced congestion and enhancing traffic safety, it is essential to model and simulate traffic flow on expressways, followed by analyzing the simulation results. In this study, we use the lane-changing selection cell transmission model (ls-CTM) to investigate the impact of setting lane-changing prewarning information on expressway traffic flow. By enhancing the composition of flow within the diverging cell in CTM, traffic can determine its downstream direction based on lane-changing probability rather than the path. A case study was conducted to investigate the impact of prewarning distances of 50, 100, and 150 m on road operational efficiency and traffic safety under different traffic volumes. The effectiveness and applicability of three measures to improve traffic safety were also summarized. The timely and accurate forecasting of urban road traffic is crucial for smart city traffic management and control. It can assist both drivers and traffic controllers in selecting efficient routes and diverting traffic to less congested roads. However, estimating traffic volume while taking into account external factors such as weather and accidents is still a challenge. In this research, we propose a hybrid deep learning framework, double attention graph neural network BiLSTM (DAGNBL), that utilizes a graph neural network to represent spatial characteristics and bidirectional LSTM units to capture temporal dependencies between features. Attention modules are added to the GNN and BLSTM to find high-impact attention weight values for the chosen road section. Our model offers the best prediction accuracy with a mean absolute percentage error of 5.21% and a root mean squared error of 4. To investigate the route choice behavior of travelers under unexpected accidents, this study designs four different scenarios of travelers' route choice behavior experiments according to the severity of unexpected accidents. The bounded rationality characteristics of travelers, such as the time perception difference coefficient, psychological threshold effect coefficient, and scale effect, are introduced into the generalized random regret minimization (GRRM) model. An improved generalized random regret minimization (IGRRM) model is constructed based on travelers' route choice behavior under unexpected accidents. The collected data of travelers' route choice results under four different congestion-level scenarios are analyzed by the IGRRM model. The study finds that with the increase in congestion level, travelers are more willing to change the route; during the commute, travelers tend to choose the route with less travel time and angular cost; in the moderate and serious congestion scenarios, travelers no longer reject the detour route; attribute perception difference, scale effect, and psychological threshold effect; affect travelers' route choice behavior. The IGRRM model based on the route choice behavior of travelers can more accurately characterize the route choice behavior of travelers under unexpected accidents, provide a basis for traffic flow distribution under unexpected accidents, and benefit traffic management departments to take traffic control and guidance measures to ease the traffic congestion caused by unexpected accidents. In new-tier cities with rapid urbanization, the reorganization of urban spatial functions and the development of road networks have brought novel challenges to traffic congestion control. Urban land use patterns have a significant correlation with urban traffic congestion. However, whether and how land use patterns of cities close to the roads affect road congestion is less to be discussed. This article investigated the relationship between land use patterns close to the urban trunk road network and traffic congestion in new tier cities Xi'an, China. We adopted the DBSCAN algorithm to cluster POIs and use the mixed POI clusters to label the socio-economic functions of roads. We found the spatial heterogeneity of POIs on the trunk road network and identified the impacts of the scales and types of POI on road congestion based on the empirical analysis. Compared to the POIs as origin and destination of the trips, the POIs as stopover points of the trips cause significantly more road congestion. The POIs with bidirectional flows at entrances/exits are more likely to cause road congestion than the POIs with unidirectional flows. Moreover, the POIs with flexible traffic flows increase road congestion, while the POIs with predicted traffic flows have no statistically significant correlation with road congestion. The results help urban planners to plan the scale, type, and location of POIs close to roads and to optimize the socio-economic functions of roads and alleviate road congestion. Intelligent traffic signal control is one of the important means to ensure traffic safety. Effective signal control can make traffic flow fast and smooth, which first needs current and future traffic information. As the control of one intersection may affect adjacent intersections, this paper proposes to predict future traffic flow with consideration of multi-intersections. It can dynamically improve traffic conditions and reduce traffic congestion. Based on various nonlinear spatial relationships at correlated multi-intersections and the potential time-dependent relationship in traffic volume, a traffic flow prediction method named CNNformer which combines transformer with CNN, is proposed. The convolution neural network (CNN) and transformer are used to extract the spatial and temporal features of correlated multiple intersections. The learnable time code is embedded into transformer's location code, and the location information and time information are injected into the model to help it learn the time characteristics of traffic volume. This study also considers the impact of cyclical traffic flow pattern and proposes CNNformer+. In the method, all of the data from the previous time window, as well as the data from the prior week and month, are correspondingly entered into the network. Finally, the output is generated through average pooling, realizing the learning of cyclical traffic flow characteristics. In the experiment, CNNformer+ and the state-of-the-art traffic flow prediction methods are compared using simulated data. Predicting spatiotemporal congestion situations of a traffic network is a prerequisite for urban traffic control. This study proposes a spatiotemporal traffic congestion situation prediction method based on the recurrent gated unit-convolutional neural network (GRU-CNN). Considering the time and space attributes of traffic data, the third-order tensor of the traffic data is extracted from the time domain, and the GRU is used to predict the traffic flow parameters of the traffic network. Then, the third-order tensor of multisource spatiotemporal traffic data is compressed into traffic data images and combined with the spatial structure. The feature extraction technology of a CNN is used to extract and identify the traffic network congestion features. Actual urban traffic network data are selected for model verification. The multistep prediction of the traffic flow parameters effectively ensures prediction accuracy. The proposed model is trained by the actual classification dataset. The prediction results of the test set demonstrate the model's reliability. Based on predicting the traffic parameters of the network, this model can give a highly accurate judgment of the traffic situation for the entire network. With the development of aviation industry, a series of problems have appeared in aviation and airspace, among which the most prominent problem is the congestion of aviation and airspace. Airspace congestion has become a major problem in the development of civil aviation in China. Especially in the central and eastern regions of China, airspace congestion is becoming more and more serious. To better solve the problem of airspace congestion, rough set theory and the Fuzzy C-means (FCM) model are first analyzed. By analyzing the temporal and spatial characteristics of traffic congestion in the control sector, a multisector traffic congestion identification model is established based on radar track data. Four multisector congestion characteristics including equivalent traffic volume, proximity, saturation, and traffic density are established. FCM and rough set theory are used to classify and identify sector congestion. Finally, the model based on FCM-rough set theory is compared with other methods based on the data of the regional control sector in northwest China. The experimental results show that the congestion recognition rate of the model is 92.6%, 93.5%, and 94.2%, and the congestion misjudgment rate is 1.5%, 1.2%, and 1.3%, respectively. Hence, the multisector congestion recognition model has a high recognition rate and a low misjudgment rate, and the overall discrimination result is relatively stable. By comparing the proposed method with other methods, it is concluded that the recognition accuracy of the model based on FCM theory is superior to other methods. In summary, the congestion situation of the sector is affected by a variety of macro- and micro-characteristics of the sector, and the congestion identification model is feasible and efficient. Today's traffic control system is developing in a more intelligent direction. The progress of electronic technology has created a traffic control and management system using a variety of control methods. The development of computers creates a more intelligent traffic optimization model for optimizing network traffic. In the limited road space, traffic control research will focus on maximizing the use of existing traffic management equipment to improve vehicle circulation efficiency and avoid congestion. In this context, combined with the temporal and spatial characteristics of traffic congestion, this study investigates the storage capacity of existing road space and seeks the optimal control method for local regional road network congestion. For the technical problems of traffic diversion in the existing two-phase control method and the queuing order in the adjacent lanes in the four-phase control method, the optimal control method is proposed, which solves the technical problems of traffic control and the phenomenon of "queuing injustice" in the adjacent lanes in one direction. The safety degree and traffic efficiency of vehicle operation are improved. The traffic flow from the same entrance to the main intersection forms a signal phase while slowing down or blocking these traffic flows can effectively improve traffic safety and traffic efficiency. The Internet of Things (IoT)-based intelligent surveillance systems in smart cities are a challenging issue as various devices capture the data. These devices, deployed close to the underlined phenomenon, such as cameras, are duplicated or redundant as accuracy is the main requirement of these systems. For this purpose, sensor nodes are deployed to provide 24/7 monitoring of a smart city, which minimizes the security risks and enables quick response in case of any disaster. However, due to a large number of devices, huge data are generated; thus, controlling traffic congestion in case of undesirable circumstances, for example, in case of accident or intention blockage of the road, is desperately needed. Numerous data aggregation mechanisms were reported in the literature to address this issue with smart city surveillance systems. However, these approaches were designed for either specific application environments or complex environments, making the implementation process hard. In this article, we have developed an Internet of Things-enabled optimal data aggregation approach, specifically designed for the intelligent surveillance systems in smart cities, to convert raw data values into the refined ones with minimum possible data loss ratio. Moreover, the proposed scheme bounds every server to perform or carry out the data refinement process to maintain the expected ratio of accuracy and precision. In this approach, ordinary devices are forced to capture and forward data in raw form, preferably without any or minimum possible processing. This reduces the load on ordinary devices in intelligent surveillance systems. Additionally, we have developed a novel approach to eliminate or reduce (if elimination is not possible) noisy data or outliers. It is implemented along with existing state-of-the-art techniques to verify the exceptional performance of the proposed data aggregation approach. These algorithms were compared using various performance evaluation metrics such as refinement ratio, data loss ratio, energy efficiency, and lifetime. A lattice hydrodynamic traffic model considering the average optimal flow of multiple grids downstream as a feedback control is proposed. The energy dissipation and fuel consumption are investigated under the feedback control based on the lattice hydrodynamic traffic model. Through linear stability analysis, the stability condition of the model is obtained. The mKdV equation and its kink-antikink density wave solution are derived by using the reduced perturbation method of nonlinear analysis. The variation trends of density wave, energy dissipation, and fuel consumption under traffic control are studied by numerical simulations. The research shows that exerting the feedback control can effectively suppress traffic congestion and improve the stability of traffic system. In recent years, an exponential increase has been witnessed in the population of the urban area worldwide, causing a significant increase in the use of transportation services. The traditional transportation system in metropolitan cities is overwhelmed, leading to many challenges. The Internet-of-Things- (IoT-) based technology has the potential to optimize transportation services in several ways. This paper highlights the challenges and consequences of an existing transportation system in Peshawar, Pakistan, in response to the rapid growth in population. Apart from the common issues, some areas in Peshawar are highly vulnerable to massive traffic jams. For this purpose, we have proposed an IoT-based framework for busy traffic junctions. The proposed framework considers the route selection problem as a game of two players, where Nash Equilibrium (NE) sets traffic for each route so that no individual can improve its performance by changing its strategy. NE calculates the traffic density from a roadside unit (RSU) collected data, which later detects and avoids traffic congestion by an alternate route selection. The framework in this paper provides a platform for the academia and transport department to convert the existing transportation system to IoT-based intelligent transportation in Peshawar, Pakistan. On-ramp control is an effective way to mitigate traffic congestion in freeways. In this study, a traffic control approach is developed based on the OD data of a regional freeway to alleviate the traffic overload in freeway bottlenecks. We first locate the major driver sources of the freeway bottlenecks and identify the on-ramps for implementing the traffic control schemes. Next, the differential evolution algorithm is employed to calculate the optimal control time at each traffic control on-ramp. The results indicate that the major driver sources of the freeway bottlenecks are limited. Traffic congestion in the freeway bottlenecks can be effectively mitigated by adaptively controlling the waiting time of vehicles at the on-ramps of their major driver sources. Urban expressways take on rapid and external transport in the city due to their fast, safe, and large capacity. Implementing intelligent and active traffic control can effectively improve the performance of urban traffic and mitigate the urban traffic congestion problem. Real-time traffic guidance is one critical way of intelligent active traffic control, and travel time is the most important input for real-time traffic guidance. We employed and improved a machine learning method called the evolving fuzzy participatory learning (ePL) model to predict the freeway travel time online in this paper. The ePL model has a promising nonlinear mapping potential, which is well suitable for the traffic prediction. We used generalized recursive least square (GRLS) to improve the estimation accuracy of the model's parameters. This model is a fuzzy control model. Its output is the forecasting result which is also the fuzzy reasoning result. We tested this model by comparing it to other travel time prediction approaches, with the freeway data from the Caltrans Performance Measurement System. The results from the improved ePL model showed mean absolute error of 5.941 seconds, mean absolute percentage error of 1.316%, and root mean square error of 10.923 s. The performances are better than those of the baseline models including ARIMA and BPN. With the acceleration of urbanization and the development of the automobile industry, the contradiction between the traffic capacity of existing urban roads and the growing traffic demand has become increasingly acute. Traffic congestion is becoming increasingly prominent. The purpose of this article is to consider the characteristics of traffic risk factors and to study the method of establishing a flexible traffic system. It can relieve traffic congestion and provide a smooth and orderly traffic environment using intelligent transportation systems to control and direct traffic flow. Based on the large urban road network, this research uses the theory of coordinated control and learning mechanism, fuzzy control, dynamic reprogramming, and other theories to study phase sequence, balance peripheral load, and overall traffic flow. It also uses on-board sensors to optimize the collection and processing of network information, decompose traffic guidance work, select the optimal route, and autonomously guide the intelligent transportation system. Under the flexible demand scheme, the average load of the trunk road is reduced by a larger degree, which is 4% lower than that of the fixed demand scheme. At the same time, the average load of the branch has increased more, which is 4% higher than that of the fixed demand scheme. It can be seen that under the elastic demand scheme, the distribution of traffic flow in the road network is more balanced and the optimization effect of relieving traffic pressure on trunk roads and improving the utilization rate of branch roads is more significant. In view of the rescue delay due to traffic congestion in the urban road network, this paper implemented real-time traffic control with congestion index constraints in emergency vehicle dispatching and proposed a two-stage optimization model and algorithm. In the first stage, salp swarm algorithm (SSA) was combined with Dijkstra algorithm, and a novel hybrid algorithm with new updating rules was designed to get the multiple alternative paths. In the second stage, an improved salp swarm algorithm (ISSA) with a population grouping strategy was proposed to obtain the best evacuation schemes and the optimal rescue paths of emergency vehicles. Results of the illustrative examples show that, after evacuation, the average travel time of all alternative paths is reduced by 24.22%, while traffic congestion indexes of the adjacent road sections almost unchanged. The computation time of the hybrid algorithm for obtaining the set number of alternative paths is 56.62% and 50.47% shorter than that of bat algorithm (BA) and SSA. For the solution of the evacuation model, the computation time of the ISSA is 33.51%, 30.15%, and 30.60% shorter than that of particle swarm optimization (PSO), BA, and SSA, and the optimal solution of the ISSA is 25.92%, 10.06%, and 0.97% better than that of PSO, BA, and SSA. That is, we shorten the emergency response time and control the adverse impact of traffic evacuation on background traffic. The improved algorithm has excellent performance. Real-time traffic signal control has long been a critical way to improve traffic congestion. Transit Signal Priority (TSP) is seen as a cost-effective way to reduce travel time variability. Most of the previous studies develop real-time signal control systems on a vehicle basis, which is unable to efficiently provide preferential treatment on transit vehicles. Person-based signal control systems, which transform traffic delay computation units from vehicle to passenger, have been proposed to try to address this limitation. However, their models, optimizing signal plan cycle-by-cycle, cannot rapidly respond to traffic variations. This study proposes a Person-based Adaptive traffic signal control method with Cooperative Transit signal priority (PACT). In PACT, not only do Road-Side Units (RSUs) perform signal optimization, but also On-Board Units (OBUs) provide in-vehicle speed advisory to reduce delays. The interaction between RSU and OBU is conducted second-by-second, which has high adaptability to traffic variations. Experiments are performed based on real traffic data via traffic simulation platform SUMO. The results indicate that PACT can efficiently reduce delays of both bus passengers and auto passengers at a signalized intersection. Compared to preoptimized signal plans, the results show that each passenger on transit vehicles experiences 33%–70% decreases in delays, and each auto passenger experiences 3%–29% decreases in delays. PACT can reduce 80%–98% in delays when the occupancy weight factor is relatively large, showing the potential of extending PACT on performing signal preemption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, urban traffic congestion has seriously affected the healthy development of urbanization in China. And many measures to combat congestion have had little effect. The purpose of this paper is to find out the most reasonable and sustainable measures to control traffic congestion. Based on the theory of system dynamics, this study constructs a model of the formation mechanism of urban traffic congestion in China, and analyzes the thinking error of the traditional strategy of "building roads to eliminate traffic congestion" This study includes the current policy measures to control traffic congestion in the system dynamics model and analyzes the influence of each measure on the formation mechanism of urban traffic congestion. Then, it critiques the unsustainability of rigid policies, such as the vehicle number limit and the "similar road building to control traffic congestion" policies. This study reveals that of the five policies adopted by the government to alleviate traffic congestion, and come to the conclusion: the "sparse block collocation" policy is the most sustainable and fundamental congestion control measure. To achieve efficient traffic congestion control and support the healthy development of urbanization in China in the future, the government should increase the balance of infrastructure investment to improve the slow environment of public transport, adhere to public transport-oriented land development policies, raise the cost of motor vehicle travel, and promote urban traffic. The rapid development of traffic industry has caused traffic congestion and environmental pollution and other problems. Traffic flow prediction and signal timing optimization under different road environments can improve the current traffic environment. In this paper, based on historical traffic data and BP neural network, according to the characteristics of different deep learning modes, SVM neural network is integrated to achieve accurate prediction of traffic flow, fully analyze the characteristics of traffic flow in different traffic environments, and accurately estimate the current traffic capacity. Meanwhile, on the basis of traffic flow prediction data and fuzzy control method, the signal timing optimization of three-phase intersections is realized to ensure the maximum capacity and the lowest average delay time of intersections. Simulation experiments show that the accuracy of the traffic flow prediction method designed in this paper is about 19.5% higher than that of the traditional mean prediction method, and fusion neural network model is more accurate than single neural network model. Expressway, as the main artery of urban traffic, realizes the smooth operation of the whole urban road network through reasonably balancing the traffic flow. However, due to the lack of reasonable and effective traffic control, the safety and congestion of expressways are becoming more and more serious. The development of intelligent network technology provides a new idea to solve the control problem of expressways. In this paper, a data-driven ramp control model of urban expressway is constructed. The interaction of traffic information is realized through intelligent network connection technology. The cooperative control strategy of VSL and RM is adopted. The mutual feedback of VSL and RM is realized based on the improved METANET model. The simulation experiment based on VISSIM secondary development shows that the collaborative control strategy under the intelligent network environment could make the vehicle travel time reduced by 20.59% and the speed difference between adjacent sections of the expressway mainline by 34.07%, which realized the coordinated control of the mainline and the on-ramp under the intelligent network environment, alleviate the expressway traffic congestion, reduce the traffic pressure, and improve the efficiency of the road network. Given the distribution difference of the vehicle flow in different urban areas, coordinating the optimization priorities of crossroads in the dynamic control of traffic lights is vital. To reduce traffic congestion at crossroads, in this study, an intelligent diverse optimization priority method (IDOPM) was developed for dynamic traffic light control at crossroads, where diverse optimization priorities can be flexibly and efficiently assigned to different crossroads. The IDOPM mainly consists of a dynamic state constructor and an optimization priority assigner. The dynamic state constructor controls the transformation of the signal combinations of traffic lights. The signal combinations of traffic lights at crossroads are abstracted as cells to be controlled by formulated rules. By designing duration particles and enhancing particles, the optimization priority assigner reconstructs the quantum particle swarm algorithm to assign crossroads with different optimization priorities. The results obtained by comparison with state‐of‐the‐art methods via extensive experiments confirmed the outstanding optimization performance of the proposed IDOPM in dynamic traffic light control. In recent years, urban traffic congestion has become more serious and the capacity of roads has declined, resulting in frequent traffic accidents. In order to effectively alleviate the traffic congestion of the regional road network, aiming at the problem of lack of accurate OD data of the road network, a regional boundary control method of the traffic network based on fuzzy RBF neural network PID (FR-PID) is proposed by combining the theory of macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD). Firstly, based on the traffic survey, the simulation model of the study area is built, and the basic data such as the traffic flow and the time occupation rate of each road section are obtained. Secondly, the simulation data are used to test the existence of MFD in the road network, and the controlled area is defined. Then, the vehicle change model of the road network area is established. Then, in view of the problem of poor adaptive ability of traditional PID control, the FR-PID control structure is designed. Finally, an example is verified by VISSIM software. In the simulation, different control methods are used for comparison and verification, and the simulation results are analyzed. The results show that the control effect of the proposed method is better than that of the traditional method, and the regional average accumulative vehicle number, regional average completed volume, regional accumulative delays, and total vehicle travel time are optimized by 28.21%, 41.19%, 27.06%, and 32.73%, respectively. Aimed at the problem of occasional congestion control, the cusp catastrophe theory is used to establish the catastrophe model of the urban road system under occasional congestion, finding breakpoints and analyzing stability after urban road system catastrophes by constructing the energetic function; based on the catastrophe characteristics of the urban road system, the feasibility method of congestion control is discussed. The results show that the control method of traffic flow based on catastrophe characteristics of the urban road system can effectively improve the efficiency of the road system in theory. The superior traffic control system can promote the efficiency of mainstream expressway. As the effective method to smooth traffic system, the variable speed limits (VSL) strategies are discussed in an expressway traffic network. The dynamic OD estimation model is used to produce the real traffic information, which is loaded to the traffic network. Then, the prediction information of traffic variables and the VSL strategy are introduced to macro hierarchical control traffic flow model. A solution algorithm is further developed to find the optimal parameters of VSL by minimizing the total travel time and delay. The simulation results show that the proposed strategy perfects well, the traffic congestion is effectively alleviated, and the traffic efficiency of the road section is significantly improved. The urban expressway network is the main part of the urban traffic network carrying most of the city's traffic pressure for its continuity and rapidity, but the control method of the traffic flow was too simple to other control methods in application in addition to the ramp control and the fixed speed control. In this paper, the theory of variable speed limit (VSL) was used to develop an optimal control model based on the improved traffic flow simulation model according to the characteristics of urban expressway traffic flow. The objective of the proposed model is to minimize the delay and maximize the traffic flow. It can adjust the traffic flow on the network in space time so that the whole network is in a state of equilibrium which not only is conducive to the control of the local traffic congestion and avoids the spread of congestion but also improves the traffic safety. The SPSA-based solution algorithm was proposed by taking into account the needs of real-time online applications. It can not only ensure the accuracy of the solution but also meet the requirements of the simulation time. The simulation results show that the variable speed limit can be optimized in moderate demand, and the proposed model and algorithm are effective and feasible in this paper. Most complex real systems are found to have multiple layers of connectivity and required to be modelled as multiplex networks. One of the extremely critical problems is to reduce the congestion and enhance the transfer capacity, especially in real communication networks with a big data environment. A novel and effective strategy to improve traffic and control congestion is proposed by adding edges according to their weights which are defined by the topology structural properties. Furthermore, which layer is more effective when our strategy is applied is discussed based on its topology structure. Adding edges between nodes whose product of multiplex network betweenness is the highest is confirmed to be more effective, particularly in the layer with stronger community structure. Simulation experiments on both computer-generated and real-world networks demonstrate that our strategy can enhance the transfer capacity of multiplex networks significantly, which is in good agreement with our analysis. Three of the most important objectives of the Federal Road Police (Patrol) when managing the traffic on federal roads in Brazil are to ensure that there is an efficient movement of traffic under stable conditions and minimal traffic congestion problems that the federal highways are safe and that accidents do not occur. Therefore, multiple matters are relevant for road safety and user security, such as prompt maintenance of these highways, regular monitoring of their state of conservation and their characteristics; controlling the traffic; and preventing and combatting criminal activities on the highways. However, considering the vast network and different conditions of roads, the different types of traffic accidents and their consequences, and different levels of violence on federal roads, it is essential that these roads undergo regular maintenance and regular inspections, are constantly patrolled, and are subject to continuous improvements. Therefore, defining the prioritization and criticality of roads takes on the characteristics of a multicriteria decision, given the multidimensional aspects of the risks inherent in them. Thus, this paper presents a multicriteria decision model for prioritizing road sections, based on their criticality and the risks that users face. The model was applied using the FITradeoff method, due to its flexibility and due to it requiring less cognitive effort from the decision-maker with regard to providing information regarding his/her preferences. A case study was undertaken on a set of the federal roads of the state of Pernambuco (Brazil), covering 22 different sections with different characteristics. As a result, it was possible to rank and identify the most critical sections of a highway. Travel time reliability (TTR) is widely used to evaluate transportation system performance. Adverse weather condition is an important factor for affecting TTR, which can cause traffic congestions and crashes. Considering the traffic characteristics under different traffic conditions, it is necessary to explore the impact of adverse weather on TTR under different conditions. This study conducted an empirical travel time analysis using traffic data and weather data collected on Yanan corridor in Shanghai. The travel time distributions were analysed under different roadway types, weather, and time of day. Four typical scenarios (i.e., peak hours and off-peak hours on elevated expressway, peak hours and off-peak hours on arterial road) were considered in the TTR analysis. Four measures were calculated to evaluate the impact of adverse weather on TTR. The results indicated that the lognormal distribution is preferred for describing the travel time data. Compared with off-peak hours, the impact of adverse weather is more significant for peak hours. The travel time variability, buffer time index, misery index, and frequency of congestion increased by an average of 29%, 19%, 22%, and 63%, respectively, under the adverse weather condition. With the development of emerging intelligent traffic signal (I-SIG) system, congestion-involved security issues are drawing attentions of researchers and developers on the vulnerability introduced by connected vehicle technology, which empowers vehicles to communicate with the surrounding environment such as road-side infrastructure and traffic control units. A congestion attack to the controlled optimization of phases algorithm (COP) of I-SIG is recently revealed. Unfortunately, such analysis still lacks a timely visualized prediction on later congestion when launching an initial attack. In this paper, we argue that traffic image feature-based learning has available knowledge to reflect the relation between attack and caused congestion and propose a novel analysis framework based on cycle generative adversarial network (CycleGAN). Based on phase order, we first extract four-direction road images of one intersection and perform phase-based composition for generating new sample image of training. We then design a weighted L1 regularization loss that considers both last-vehicle attack and first-vehicle attack, to improve the training of CycleGAN with two generators and two discriminators. Due to increasing traffic demand, many metropolitan areas are experiencing extensive traffic congestion, which demands for efficient traffic signal timing and optimization. However, conventional efficiency measure-based signal optimization cannot handle the ubiquitous uncertainty in the road networks, demanding for the incorporation of reliability measures into signal optimization, which is still in its early stage. Therefore, targeting this issue, based on the recent studies on recognizing travel time reliability (TRR) as an important reliability measure of road networks, a travel time reliability-based urban road traffic network signal timing optimization model is proposed in this paper, with the objective function to optimize a TTR measure, i.e., buffer time index. The proposed optimization model is solved using the heuristic particle swarm optimization approach. A case study is conducted using microscopic traffic simulation for a road network in the City of Nanjing, China. Results demonstrate that the proposed optimization model can improve travel time reliability of the road traffic network and the efficiency of the road traffic network as well. In this paper, the analyses of traffic evolution on the road network of a roundabout having three entrances and three exiting legs are conducted from macroscopic point of view. The road networks of roundabouts are modeled as a merging and diverging types 1 × 2 and 2 × 1 junctions. To study traffic evolution at junction, two cases have been considered, namely, demand and supply limited cases. In each case, detailed mathematical analysis and numerical tests have been presented. The analysis in the case of demand limited showed that rarefaction wave fills the portion of the road network in time. In the contrary, in supply limited case, traffic congestion occurs at merging junctions and shock wave propagating back results in reducing the performance of a roundabout to control traffic dynamics. This paper introduces two traffic light strategies to control traffic and avoid traffic jam in urban networks. One strategy is a new traffic light scheduling system, which controls traffic light using local variables (waiting time and number of vehicle on links) but has a global impact on the traffic, using shared variables between neighbour intersections. The proposed traffic light scheduling system is designed based on eigenvector centrality of intersection relation matrix. The intersection relation matrix is a new representation of a junction which indicates the traffic relation between intersection's links and adjacent intersections. The second contribution is expanding a new dual mode traffic light strategy (namely, Exit Status Traffic Light (ETL)), which notifies the drivers whether they are allowed to exit a street or not. In other words, vehicles are allowed to enter a street in both red and green ETL, but they are not allowed to exit the street for a long time in red ETL (while traffic is heavy in the subnetwork). The ETL gives a chance to relax traffic in a subnetwork and avoid traffic jam. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is analysed and evaluated by a number of simulations on three-way grid networks. Two-way rectangular grid networks are modelled via a cell transmission model (CTM). With the rapid growth of car ownership, traffic congestion has become one of the most serious social problems. For us, accurate real-time travel time predictions are especially important for easing traffic congestion, enabling traffic control and management, and traffic guidance. In this paper, we propose a method to predict urban road travel time by combining XGBoost and LightGBM machine learning models. In order to obtain a relatively complete data set, we mine the GPS data of Beijing and combine them with the weather feature to consider the obtained 14 features as candidate features. By processing and analyzing the data set, we discussed in detail the correlation between each feature and the travel time and the importance of each feature in the model prediction results. Finally, the 10 important features screened by the LightGBM and XGBoost models were used as key features. We use the full feature set and the key feature set as input to the model to explore the effect of different feature combinations on the prediction accuracy of the model and then compare the prediction results of the proposed fusion model with a single model. Two-stop-line signalized roundabouts (TSLSR) are widely utilized in China. To calculate the capacity and optimal cycle length accurately, a model considering internal space constraint of the roundabout is developed in this paper. Firstly, the operational principle of TSLSR is analyzed. TSLSR is modeled as being equivalent to a four-phase intersection with left-turn protection phases, and the left-turn lane is further simplified as the "short-lane model". Secondly, based on the above analysis, the capacity of TSLSR is modeled and additionally, the accuracy and sensitivity of the model are also analyzed. Finally, the optimal cycle length of TSLSR which maximizes the capacity is put forward. Results show that the accuracy of the capacity model is low without considering the internal space constraint of the roundabout. However, the model developed in this paper is shown to improve the accuracy (about 20%) and control the relative error to be within 10%. The parameter sensitivity analysis demonstrates that the cycle length and radius of the central island have a significant influence on the capacity of the left-turn lane and results in an optimal value of signal cycle length maximizing the capacity. With the implementation of the freeway free policy during the holidays, traffic congestion in the freeway becomes a common phenomenon. In order to alleviate traffic pressure, traffic flow prediction during the holidays has become a problem of great concern. This paper proposes a hybrid prediction methodology combining discrete Fourier transform (DFT) with support vector regression (SVR). The common trend in the traffic flow data is extracted using DFT by setting an appropriate threshold, which is predicted by extreme extrapolation of the historical trend. The SVR method is applied to predict the residual series. The experimental results with measured data collected from the toll stations in Jiangsu province of China show that the proposed algorithm has higher accuracy compared with the traditional method, and it is an efficient method for traffic flow prediction during the holidays. Modelling and implementing adequate controllers for urban road traffic control constitute a huge challenge nowadays because of the complexity of systems, as well as possible scenarios and configurations, in each road in a city. A series of issues related to modelling these behaviours are common to arise when using formalisms, tools, and computation machines to perform complex calculations and limitations. This paper presents a formal, flexible, and adaptable approach, with no limitations, from the scientific point of view. For this purpose, modelling formalisms (cellular automata and timed automata) and analysis techniques (simulation and formal verification) are proposed to reach the main goals of modelling complex and adaptable behaviours in urban road traffic with multiple over time changeable configurations. In this paper, we revisit the principle of bounded rationality applied to dynamic traffic assignment to evaluate its influences on network performance. We investigate the influence of different types of bounded rational user behavior on (i) route flows at equilibrium and (ii) network performance in terms of its internal, inflow, and outflow capacities. We consider the implementation of a bounded rational framework based on Monte Carlo simulation. A Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) mesoscopic traffic simulator is considered to calculate time-dependent route costs that account for congestion, spillback, and shock-wave effects. Network equilibrium is calculated using the Method of Successive Averages. As a benchmark, the results are compared against both Deterministic and Stochastic User Equilibrium. To model different types of bounded rational user behavior we consider two definitions of user search order (indifferent and strict preferences) and two settings of the indifference band. We also test the framework on a toy Braess network to gain insight into changes in the route flows at equilibrium for both search orders and increasing values of aspiration levels. Urban intersections have been well recognized as bottlenecks of urban transport systems. It is thus important to propose and implement strategies for increasing the efficiency of public and private transportation systems as a whole. In order to achieve this goal, an additional signal could be set up near the intersection to give priority to buses through stopping vehicles in advance of the main intersection as a presignal. It has been increasingly popular in urban cities. While presignals indeed reduce the average delay per traveler, they cause extra stops of private vehicles, which might compromise the overall efficiency, safety, and sustainability. This paper aims to propose a model to improve presignals by reducing the vehicles’ number of stops behind the presignals. By applying the method, vehicles would be able to adjust their speed based on traffic conditions as well as buses’ speed and approach. Station inflow control (SIC) is an important and effective method for reducing recurrent congestion during peak hours in the Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou subway systems. This work proposes a practical and efficient method for establishing a static SIC scheme in normal weekdays for large-scale subway networks. First, a traffic assignment model without capacity constraint is utilized to determine passenger flow distributions on the network. An internal relationship between station inflows and section flows is then constructed. Second, capacity bottlenecks are identified by considering the transport capacity of each section. Then, a feedback-based bottleneck elimination strategy is established to search target control stations and determine their control time and control strength. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a decision support system coded in the C# programming language was developed, and the Beijing subway was used as a case study. The results indicate that the proposed method and tool are capable of practical applications, and the generated SIC plan has better performance over the existing SIC plan. Traffic control is an effective and efficient method for the problem of traffic congestion. It is necessary to design a high-level controller to regulate the network traffic demands, because traffic congestion is not only caused by the improper management of the traffic network but also to a great extent caused by excessive network traffic demands. Therefore, we design a demand-balance model predictive controller based on the macroscopic fundamental diagram-based multi-subnetwork model, which can optimize the network traffic mobility and the network traffic throughput by regulating the input traffic flows of the subnetworks. Because the transferring traffic flows among subnetworks are indirectly controlled and coordinated by the demand-balance model predictive controller, the subnetwork division can variate dynamically according to real traffic states, and a global optimality can be achieved for the entire traffic network. In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the presence of congestion increases the ratio of packet loss and energy consumption and reduces the network throughput. Particularly, this situation will be more complex in Internet of Things (IoT) environment, which is composed of thousands of heterogeneous nodes. RPL is an IPv6 routing protocol in low power and lossy networks standardized by IETF. However, the RPL can induce problems under network congestion, such as frequently parent changing and throughput degradation. In this paper, we address the congestion problem between parent nodes and child nodes in RPL-enabled networks, which typically consist of low power and resource constraint devices. To mitigate the effect of network congestion, we design a parent-change procedure by game theory strategy, by which the child nodes can change next hop neighbors toward the sink. Comparing to the ContikiRPL implementation, the simulation results show that our protocol can achieve more than two times improvement in throughput and reduce packet loss rate with less increasing of average hop count. Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of intelligent transportation system around the world, which helps to relieve urban traffic congestion problems. For instance, many mega-cities in China have devoted a large amount of money and resources to the development of intelligent transportation system. This poses an intriguing and important issue: how to measure and quantify the contribution of intelligent transportation system to the urban city, which is still a puzzle. This paper proposes a matching difference-in-difference model to calculate the contribution rate of intelligent transportation system on traffic smoothness. Within the model, the main effect indicators of traffic smoothness are first identified, and then the evaluation index system is built, and finally the ideas of the matching pool are introduced. The proposed model is illustrated in Guangzhou, China (capital city of Guangdong province). The results show that introduction of ITS contributes 9.25% to the improvement of traffic smooth in Guangzhou. As cities across the world grow and the mobility of populations increases, there has also been a corresponding increase in the number of vehicles on roads. The result of this has been a proliferation of challenges for authorities with regard to road traffic management. A consequence of this has been congestion of traffic, more accidents, and pollution. Accidents are a still major cause of death, despite the development of sophisticated systems for traffic management and other technologies linked with vehicles. Hence, it is necessary that a common system for accident management is developed. For instance, traffic congestion in most urban areas can be alleviated by the real-time planning of routes. However, the designing of an efficient route planning algorithm to attain a globally optimal vehicle control is still a challenge that needs to be solved, especially when the unique preferences of drivers are considered. The aim of this paper is to establish an accident management system that makes use of vehicular ad hoc networks coupled with systems that employ cellular technology in public transport. This system ensures the possibility of real-time communication among vehicles, ambulances, hospitals, roadside units, and central servers. In addition, the accident management system is able to lessen the amount of time required to alert an ambulance that it is required at an accident scene by using a multihop optimal forwarding algorithm. Moreover, an optimal route planning algorithm (ORPA) is proposed in this system to improve the aggregate spatial use of a road network, at the same time bringing down the travel cost of operating a vehicle. This can reduce the incidence of vehicles being stuck on congested roads. Simulations are performed to evaluate ORPA, and the results are compared with existing algorithms. The evaluation results provided evidence that ORPA outperformed others in terms of average ambulance speed and travelling time. The popular route recommendation and traffic monitoring over the road networks have become important in the location-based services. The schemes to find out the congested routes were proposed by considering the number of vehicles in a road segment. However, the existing schemes do not consider the features of each road segment such as width, length, and direction in a road network. Furthermore, the existing schemes fail to consider the average moving speed of vehicles. Therefore, they can detect the incorrect density routes. To overcome such problems, we propose a new discovering scheme of congested routes through the analysis of vehicle trajectories in a road network. The proposed scheme divides each road into segments with different width and length in a road network. And then, the congested road segment is detected through the saturation degree of the road segment and the average moving speed of vehicles in the road segment. Finally, we compute the final congested routes by using a clustering scheme. To identify network bottlenecks of urban expressway effectively is a foundational work for improving network traffic condition and preventing traffic congestion. This study proposes a methodology to estimate the impact of traffic incident on urban expressway on the basis of modified cell transmission model. The metastable state was taken into account in the proposed method to reflect the actual operating state of traffic flow on urban expressway as much as possible. Regarding the location of traffic incident, the method of cell restructuring settings was discussed. We then proceed to introduce a new concept of the effected length in a given time period as the evaluation indicator to directly depict the influence of traffic incident. The proposed method was tested on a 6516-meter urban expressway section of west second ring road in Beijing. Rapid development of urbanization and automation has resulted in serious urban traffic congestion and air pollution problems in many Chinese cities recently. As a traffic demand management strategy, congestion pricing is acknowledged to be effective in alleviating the traffic congestion and improving the efficiency of traffic system. This paper proposes an urban traffic congestion pricing model based on the consideration of transportation network efficiency and environment effects. First, the congestion pricing problem under multimode (i.e., car mode and bus mode) urban traffic network condition is investigated. Second, a traffic congestion pricing model based on bilevel programming is formulated for a dual-mode urban transportation network, in which the delay and emission of vehicles are considered. Third, an improved mathematical algorithm combining successive average method with the genetic algorithm is proposed to solve the bilevel programming problem. Short distance trips are defined as any trips shorter than or equal to 5 kilometers, which have been found to be a big contributor to the traffic congestion problem. This paper is intended to analyze factors that influence the mode choice of short distance travels in order to help reduce short distance trips by cars. A survey is conducted at two typical kinds of residential areas, one with a high proportion of short distance car trips and another one with a low proportion. Then, by applying the structural equation modeling, it is found that the age, the household income, and the vehicle ownerships have a significant effect on the mode choice of short distance travels. Besides, among residents of the same type (same age, household income, and vehicle ownerships) in surveyed areas, those in the area with a better green-mode travel environment account for a higher proportion choosing the green mode than those in other areas. Based on this result, it is concluded that a better green-mode travel environment leads to a higher proportion of green-mode travels. Traffic demand in emergency evacuation is usually too large to be effectively managed with reactive traffic information control methods. These methods adapt to the road traffic passively by publishing real-time information without consideration of the routing behavior feedback produced by evacuees. Other remedy measures have to be prepared in case of nonrecurring congestion under these methods. To use the network capacity fully to mitigate near-future evacuation traffic congestion, we propose proactive traffic information control (PTIC) model. Based on the mechanism between information and routing behavior feedback, this model can change the route choice of evacuees in advance by dissipating strategic traffic information. Generally, the near-future traffic condition is difficult to accurately predict because it is uncertain in evacuation. Assume that the value of traffic information obeys certain distribution within a range, and then real-time traffic information may reflect the most-likely near-future traffic condition. Unlike the real-time information, the proactive traffic information is a selection within the range to achieve a desired level of the road network performance index (total system travel time). In the aspect of the solution algorithm, differential equilibrium decomposed optimization (D-EDO) is proposed to compare with other heuristic methods. SUMMARY On the basis of real traffic and environmental data measured on German freeways, we studied common features of traffic congestion under the influence of severe weather conditions. We have found that traffic features [J] and [S] defining traffic phases 'wide moving jam' (J) and 'synchronized flow' (S) in Kerner's three-phase theory are indeed common spatiotemporal traffic features. The quantitative parameters for both traffic phases [S] and [J] were investigated in a comparison of 'ideal' weather conditions (good visibility and no precipitation) and severe weather situations (icy road, wind, precipitation, etc.). We showed spatiotemporal congested patterns in several space-time diagrams based on the Automatic Tracking of Moving Jams/Forecasting of Traffic Objects (ASDA/FOTO) model reconstruction for roadside detectors. A statistical study of traffic phase [J] parameters was presented, showing the average values and standard deviation of the quantities.
