JLIS.it, in full respect of the originality, rigor, and scientific quality of each of the papers published, places among its constitutive values ​​the dissemination of science within the broad context of open science. This mission intends to guarantee conditions of accessibility and equitable results to researchers, collaborators, reviewers, board members, and readers, regardless of their affiliation, gender, age, geographical origin, or economic condition.

The 16th Congress of the Mediterranean Phytopathological Union (MPU2022) took place in Limassol, Cyprus from 4–8 April, 2022. Plant pathologists from the region and beyond celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Union and the 62 years of publication of Phytopathologia Mediterranea as a top level plant pathology journal. MPU2022 entitled “Safeguarding Mediterranean Plant Health” promoted dissemination of the latest scientific advances, and facilitated dialogue and collaboration between researchers interested in all aspects of Phytopathology. This conference also addressed wider perspectives in scientific fields not previously explored at MPU Congresses, including abiotic stresses, biopesticides, forest pathology, smart agriculture and gender equality in research, funding, teaching and professional development. Papers presented at the Congress included 83 oral presentations, including 15 keynote presentations from leading scientists, and 63 poster presentations, covering all areas of plant pathology and plant stress research, from 130 participants. Five special sessions in cutting edge subjects were organised. A special session was organised jointly with the Arab Society of Plant Protection. All these scientific contributions are part of this issue.

L’articolo esamina l’evoluzione dei pop-up books destinati all’infanzia, nel periodo compreso tra la fine del Settecento e la fine del Novecento e, in particolare, la personalità artistica di alcuni editori/paper engineer (Dean and Son, Lothar Meggendorfer, Ernest Nister, S. Louise Giraud, Vojtĕch Kubăsta). Il contributo illustra inoltre il funzionamento di alcuni dispositivi cartotecnici da loro progettati e realizzati. Resta deliberatamente escluso dall’indagine il pop-up book digitale, che presenta caratteristiche e problematiche diverse rispetto al libro cartaceo e che pertanto esulano dall’ambito di interesse del saggio.

Abstract

The article talks about the increasing availability of paper and its use as a medium for written and visual communication, whether in manuscript or printed format, together with the processes through which transformed commerce and the communication of news in early modern Europe. It mentions about the strength of the Muslim corsairing presence.

The biography of William Shakespeare exerts an influence on various areas of research related to Shakespeare, including textual, bibliographical, and attribution studies. A case in point is the theory that Shakespeare wrote the Hand D Additions in the Sir Thomas More manuscript. That theory is now part of received scholarship, even though many of the assumptions and arguments first published in 1923 have been challenged. The original palaeographic argument can be reappraised with reference to the criteria and procedures of the forensic document examiner. Recent scholarship relevant to an investigation of the case that the Hand D Additions are Shakespeare’s ‘foul papers’, including Paul Werstine’s Early Modern Playhouse Manuscripts and the Editing of Shakespeare, provides the foundation for a brief reconsideration of that topic. Supporting arguments for the Hand D attribution, in particular those based on orthography, prove vulnerable to challenge.

Abstract

"The single biggest threat to man's continued dominance is the virus” This statement was made by Joshua Lederberg in 1958 in the occasion of his Nobel Lecture. This claim cannot be forgotten in this period while we are looking for a reason of hope and this hope, after ensuring adequate sanitary services and responsible behaviour of citizens, can come only from Science. Medical sciences represent undoubtedly the queen disciplines, but many other disciplines can play a very important role. At this particular moment the basic core of knowledge is provided by the group of biosciences such as medicine, virology, biology, biotechnology. It is fundamental to have an intradisciplinary group that speaks the same language at the start of any research activity.

The aim of this paper is to present some thoughts on the sidelines of the international conference “The privilege of the written word: management, conservation and enhancement of personal papers and books”, held at Salerno University on April 10-12th 2019. The conference represented a significant moment of meeting for the scientific and professional community of archives and libraries in order to debate the issues related to conservation, management and valorization of personal collections. This event also provided an opportunity for the presentation of the ‘Guidelines on the treatment of personal funds’ edited by the National Commission of special libraries personal archives and libraries of the Italian Library Association (AIB).

The goal of this discussion paper is to foster the debate among scholars on some of the key issues that are currently challenging the impact of academic wine consumer studies and encourage younger researchers towards alternative paths. Based on my personal experience, I will focus on some scholars' practices that (in my view) could be revised to increase the reconnection of researchers to the practical world, namely: topic relevance Vs. trendiness, methodological approaches and data utility, sample issues and the replication crisis. This paper illustrates the main teaching practices features in the Italian primary and secondary school, by using new data, provided by Invalsi, about teachers’ daily activities. We merge such information with the scores achieved by the students in the Invalsi test. Our study reframes the cognitive test results in mathematics from a new bottom-up perspective, that is internal to the educational system. Unendo queste informazioni con i punteggi ottenuti dagli studenti nel test Invalsi, si vogliono approfondire i risultati ottenuti dagli studenti in matematica partendo da una nuova prospettiva, interna al sistema di educazione.

Reading texts on the web using technological devices is a practice that is increasing, especially among the younger generation, and this raises questions about the skills that are required to do this, the role and effects of the distractors present around the text, and the cognitive reorganisation that involves a change in the tools used for reading. It appears possible to hypothesise that the meaning of texts is destined, in time, to be more accessible through technological devices rather than via paper. This article presents the results of an experiment conducted with a group of dropouts, a category identified for placement outside the classic route of education, and therefore further removed from the daily use of traditional, printed texts encountered in a professional training course. Using evidence from the survey released by OECD-PISA, our intention is to compare the understanding of these texts when presented on paper compared to when they appeared on Facebook.

An introduction is presented which discusses several reports within the issue on topics including codification and exchange of knowledge, information and value; self-interested use of newsletters in early modern Malta; and library catalogues as both records of knowledge.

In the construction sector, the new Industry 4.0 and circular economy paradigms are currently playing an increasingly important role in order to respond to demands for energetic efficiency, optimisation of resource usage, automation and production activities monitoring. Therefore, this article aims to at illustrate industrial research and an experimental development activity that led to the creation of an innovative product named MULTIFId. It consists of an intelligent, economical and low-emission panel, made with waste from the paper and cardboard industrial manufacturing process which intends to contribute to the development of the fundamental enabling technology of "Advanced Materials" for Intelligent Factories. The 8th National Phytopathological Congress, organized every two years by the Hellenic Phytopathological Society (HPS), was held in Heraklion, Crete, October 22-24, 1998 and it was attended by 400 participants. At this meeting, 44 oral presentations and 55 posters were presented dealing with plant diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses, non-parasitic disorders and disease control. Moreover, two round table discussions were held. The first was on “Modern Methods for Disease Diagnosis and Identification of Plant Pathogens” and the second on “New Groups of Fungicides. Advantages over Older Compounds”. Also, a special session was held for review and discussion about the poster presentations. Abstracts of the papers and posters of this congress are presented in this issue.

The Ninth National Phytopathological Congress, organised every two years by the Hellenic Phytopathological Society (HPS), was held in Athens, Greece on October 20-22, 1998, and was attended by 400 participants. Thirty-seven oral presentations and 52 posters were presented at the meeting, dealing with plant diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses and non-parasitic disorders, and with disease control. Moreover, one round-table discussion was held on “Re-emerging diseases”. Abstracts of the papers and posters of the congress are presented in this issue.

In an effort to reduce the cost of virus assays, different types of regular paper were evaluated as possible replacements for the commonly used nitrocellulose membrane (NCM) as the solid phase in the tissue-blot immunoassay (TBIA) used to detect Alfalfa mosaic virus, Bean yellow mosaic virus and Broad bean stain virus (BBSV) in faba bean tissue, and Barley yellow striate mosaic virus in barley tissue. Among the many types of paper evaluated, Hewlett-Packard (HP) non-glossy plotter paper proved to be adequate for detection of all the above viruses. After printing (blotting) of the samples to be tested and blocking with either 2% gelatin (for one hour at 37oC) or using 0.1% Roche blocking reagent (for one hour at room temperature), satisfactory results were produced. This paper could also be used to detect BBSV in groups consisting of 15 young lentil seedlings. HP non-glossy plotter paper was not as effective when testing for phloem-limited legume viruses such as Bean leaf roll virus (BLRV), Faba bean necrotic yellows virus (FBNYV) and Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV). White paper (manufactured by Soporcel, Portugal) was slightly more sensitive when used for BLRV and FBNYV detection in faba bean tissues and for BYDV in barley tissues. Since NCM represents 40–50% of the cost of test reagents, using ordinary paper reduced costs considerably.

This position paper critically analyses the process to implement the UNESCO Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (2011), exploring evaluation tools, innovative business / management models and financing tools for the conservation and regeneration of Historic Urban Landscape (HUL), to make it operational in the perspective of a circular economy model of sustainable development for city / territory system regeneration. Through evaluation tools, it is possible to pass from general principles to operational practices; to produce empirical evidence of the economic, social and environmental benefits of HUL integrated conservation and regeneration. The challenge of generating a symbiosis between conservation and transformation issues requires adequate evaluation methods, business, management and financing tools, engaging civil society and local stakeholders, capturing both HUL tangible and intangible values to turn the historic urban landscape into a driver of sustainable growth. The analysis carried out in this paper shows that through the suggested tools it is possible to make operational the UNESCO Recommendations, transforming conflicts into opportunities, producing economic attractiveness and strengthen social awareness and cohesion. The Amalfi Coast represents a unicum in which the complexity is due to the coexistence of natural singularities and multiple traces resulting from the adaptation made by man to the harsh orography and to the scarcity of resources. Included in the World Heritage List in 1997, the area of the UNESCO perimeter is placed at the centre of the programmatic guidelines of the Management Plan which articulates the objectives around the themes of knowledge, protection, conservation, enhancement, and communication of (and for) coastal cultural heritage. Given these premises, the contribution aims to present a critical balance between the prospects for intervention and the operations concretely defined for the conservation of the cultural landscape of the Amalfi Coast, paying attention to the fate of the proto-industrial heritage (paper mills, ironworks, mills, and hydraulic works), largely abandoned and which requires targeted strategies for the recognition of specificities and the mitigation of intrinsic vulnerabilities. The article examines the evolution of pop-up children books in the period from the late eighteenth century and the end of the twentieth century and, in particular, the artistic personality of some publishers/paper engineer (Dean and Son, Lothar Meggendorfer, Ernest Nister, St. Louise Giraud, Vojtech Kubăsta). The contribution also illustrates operation of some devices. After almost 20 years from the first Berlin Declaration, the end of 2018 saw a new impulse in open access to publications (and not only) with the launch of Plan S by the Coalition S and with the announcement of the launch of "European Open Science Cloud". The two events are part of a new scenario that sees, in particular, publishers strongly urged by academic and government institutions to take the definitive step towards a true Open Science. After the transition from paper to electronic, everyone is called to a new challenge: to find one (or more) economically sustainable models that are no longer based on the subscription model but on that of publications. The projects commissioned to Guarino Guarini by the Order of Regular Theatine Clerics left a mark of his extraordinary ability to blend rationality and lucid imagination of geometric shapes in which the close relationship between art and science stands out. Most of realized buildings have been demolished or destroyed because of catastrophic events. Therefore, the problem of knowledge of such manufactured products arises increasing and integrating the available data with those newly acquired in emergency situations. This paper proposes a digital platform aimed to analyze and catalogue Guarini's heritage; the data sheets can be shared and easily implemented. A special section is dedicated to buildings no longer existing. The aim of this project project is to allow the faithfuls, visitors and the Fathers of the Order themselves to be able to "review" and "relive" the Theatine lost architecture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents the work done during the two editions of the Summer School that took place in Lampedusa in 2017 and 2018, organized by the Italian Association of Sociology - Environment and Territory Section. The aim of the paper is twofold. Firstly, it aims to illustrate the results of the data analysis and field observation carried out by the participants of the School. They consist of a multi-faceted description of the Island, with special attention to its different populations (residents, city users and especially migrants), and of some resulting project proposals. Secondly, the essay aims to promote a practice based on study and training, which is typical of the sociological analysis of territory, and that can provide useful insight on the studied places and to the people of Lampedusa, within a broader vision of justice and social sustainability. Peer review is one of the most efficient ways to ensure the quality of papers for possible publication in scholarly journals. However, the process of peer review is not free of bias and disorders. Many reviewers are unaware of how their attitudes towards the evaluation of scholarly papers may violate Peer Review Ethics (PRE). This paper attempts to analyze the different ethical issues influencing the job of reviewing. The research sample for this study included 7 Iranian library and information journals, 124 Iranian peer reviewers, and 34 authors. Peer reviewers and authors were asked to evaluate the most important ethical elements of peer review in Iranian LIS journals through two different questionnaires based on Rajabali Beglou et al. (2019) research. Findings showed that there was no difference among authors and reviewers in terms of gender in most PRE elements. Also, the level of experience of the authors was not significant in terms of understanding and acceptance of the PRE among reviewers and authors. However, review experiences regarding some PRE elements were significant in respondents’ viewpoints. The experiences reviewers had already gained were influential on their views about PRE. In addition, results showed that there were significant differences among reviewers and authors about the PRE elements in LIS journals. Authorship experiences had not effect on the PRE elements and the dual role of peer reviewing and authorship had no impact on their views. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Among the Henslowe-Alleyn papers donated by Edward Alleyn to Dulwich College in 1619 is a group of letters exchanged in 1593 between the Henslowe household in London, where Alleyn’s young wife Joan then lived, and Edward Alleyn, then touring in the provinces with Lord Strange’s men, when the London theatres were closed on account of the plague. These letters have always been read for the (scanty) contribution they give to the history of Elizabethan theatre. What has not been considered is their pragmatic peculiarity, which illustrates a real, and probably very rare case of collaboration in letter-writing. Joan Alleyn’s literacy was probably either incomplete, or null, and the letters sent to Alleyn were written by Henslowe, who was Joan’s step-father, and who, in turn, ‘received’ Alleyn’s letters to Joan and probably read them to her. The essay first describes the context in which the exchange took place: the 1592-1594 London plague epidemic, the consequent closing of the theatres, and the plague’s impact on the suburb of Southwark where the Henslowes lived; it also outlines the particular social, economic and affective features of the Henslowe family; then it examines the particular pragmatic situation in which the drafting of the letters a young bride addressed to her husband was entrusted to a figure of authority like a father rather than a scribe, a servant, a secretary, or a clerk, that is, the only figures considered by letter-writing theorists as a woman’s ‘extension’ of meanings, or ‘ventriloquist’ substitute. The article also intends to illuminate the figure of Joan Alleyn, née Woodward, her role as subject to her father’s patriarchy in her parents’ house, her management of her own household, and, for many years, the object of her husband’s love and care, when she followed, and was part of Edward Alleyn’s fortune – first as a renowned ‘model actor’ and later as a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist.

Turnout has become increasingly unequal in many advanced democracies over the last few decades. Disadvantaged social groups are found to exhibit lower turnout compared to their better-off counterparts. According to numerous scholars, this growing gap is mainly attributed to the weakening of mass organizations that traditionally appealed to socio-economically disadvantaged social groups, particularly trade unions. However, very few studies have investigated these trends in Italy, a country that has witnessed a significant decrease in electoral turnout since the late 1970s, and where the socioeconomic causes of this decline have not been systematically explored. Against this backdrop, this paper aims to analyse, first and foremost, whether electoral participation in Italy is becoming increasingly unequal. Then, it moves to explore the extent to which the turnout gap between individuals with low and high socio-economic status (SES) could be moderated by both de-unionization and trade unions' membership. By utilizing a dataset that combines 10 waves of the Italian National Election Study (1983-2018), the paper demonstrates that the turnout gap between low and high SES individuals has substantially widened over the last decades. Furthermore, it suggests that while the overall turnout gap is at least partially affected by the strength of trade unions in the country, trade unions still seem to be able to mobilize their members, particularly among lower social groups. This paper traces the emergence, politicisation and spread of healthcare provision tactics by (contentious) collective actors in Greece between 1990 and 2015. Drawing on participant observation, in-depth interviews with relevant field actors (N=40), and documentary analysis, the paper develops a diachronic typology that analyses and compares; (1) the appearance of those tactics in the Greek context in the 1990s, (2) their appropriation by contentious actors after the December 2008 riots, and (3) their diffusion, and eventual modularisation over the course of the 2010 crisis and the cycle of anti-austerity contention. In so doing, the paper helps disentangle the dynamics of repertoire innovation through an understudied set of tactics. This is achieved through the reconstruction of the genealogy of healthcare Direct Social Actions (DSAs) - pace Bosi and Zamponi (2015) - in Greece, their transmutation from "consenting" to contentious tactics after 2008, and their wide diffusion among contentious milieus after 2010. In addition, the paper discusses the interplay between the contextual and strategic dimensions of those tactical preferences across actors and across time. To be sure, early utilisation of those tactics on the side of marginal players can be understood as attempts to tactically differentiate themselves vis-à-vis those traditional and hegemonic players in the arena who relied on indirect, protest tactics. The crisis, however, disturbed the seeming equilibrium of the healthcare arena thus prompting tactical convergence around healthcare DSAs among contentious actors, on the one hand, while reinforcing strategic convergence among some actors and strategic divergence among others. In the last decade, the rapid development of technology has increased the importance of the digital presence of service providers in wine tourism. The use of new digital technologies can help wine regions and service providers to improve the visitor experience and enhance the destination image. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of digital content marketing (DCM) in wine tourism and explore the importance of its dimensions on wine tourists' perceived image, satisfaction and behavioural intentions. The paper is based on desk and field research. An analysis of previous research was conducted and a survey was formed based on the previous research. The empirical study was conducted with a sample of 241 Croatian respondents, who have visited wine cellars and wine events in Istria in the last 5 years. Hypothesis testing was conducted using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The research results showed that usefulness, entertainment and quality of digital content had a statistically significant influence on perceived image, while entertainment and quality of digital content were significant predictors of overall satisfaction of wine tourists. Furthermore, a positive influence of perceived image and overall satisfaction with digital content on intention to continue using it was found. The study contributes to the understanding of wine tourists' behaviour in the digital environment and leads to implications that can be used for the development of digital marketing strategies to improve the wine tourism offer and to better respond to the contemporary demands of wine tourists.
