Evaporites were deposited in every saline lake in the western Qaidam Basin (QB) during the late Quaternary, but the role of the Quaternary glacial environment in the formation of evaporite deposits remains to be clarified. In this paper, five upper Quaternary evaporite-bearing profiles in the western QB are studied. Uranium-thorium (U–Th) dating was applied to obtain the depositional ages of these profiles, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis was applied to identify the evaporite minerals. The U–Th dating results indicate that halite (NaCl)-dominated profile D08 and mirabilite (Na 2 SO 4 ·10H 2 O)-dominated profile MXK were deposited between 146.1 ± 53.4 ka and 171.3 ± 27.2 ka, mainly corresponding to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6; the bloedite (Na 2 Mg(SO 4) 2 ·4H 2 O)-dominated profiles WMX1 and WMX2 were deposited between 182.1 ± 2.5 ka and 206.7 ± 7.0 ka, mainly corresponding to the late period of MIS7; and the mirabilite and halite-dominated salt layers in profile D30 were deposited between 9.0 ± 0.7 ka and 14.3 ± 1.6 ka, with mirabilite deposit ages corresponding to MIS2 and early MIS1. The minerals in the profiles identified by XRD analyses are mirabilite, thenardite (Na 2 SO 4), bloedite, gypsum (CaSO 4 ·2H 2 O), starkeyite (MgSO 4 ·4H 2 O), hexahydrite (MgSO 4 ·6H 2 O) and halite. This study, combined with those of previously reported evaporite deposits in the western QB, indicates that MIS7, MIS6 and MIS2 were important evaporite deposition periods in the late Quaternary. Evaporite depositions in the QB during MIS6 and MIS2 were attributed to a decrease in temperature and shrinkage of the saline lake hydrosphere. The cold glacial climate during MIS6 and MIS2 was conducive to mirabilite deposition in the western QB, while the relatively warm climate of the late period MIS7 was conducive to bloedite deposition. Abstract Knowledge of changes in the distribution of C 3 and C 4 plants in relation to climate change is the key to predicting the biosphere's response to future climatic warming. There are significant differences in the spatiotemporal evolution of C 4 plant abundance at different latitudes since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), and the factors responsible remain debated. In this study, we reconstructed the spatiotemporal pattern of C 4 plants in China since the LGM, based on a synthesis of δ13C records of soil organic matter from paleosol sequences and δ13C records of individual n-alkanes from lake and marine sediments. The results indicate that, spatially, maximum C 4 abundance during the LGM was in South China; while maximum C 4 abundance occurred in the Chinese Loess Plateau in North China during the early and mid-Holocene. Temporally, in North China, C 4 plant abundance initially increased since the LGM, reached a maximum during the early and mid-Holocene and then decreased; however, the opposite trend occurred in South China. Combined with a physiological-process model used to study the sensitivity of C 3 and C 4 plants to changes in climate and atmospheric p CO 2 in different regions, our results reveal that temperature was the dominant factor driving C 4 plant expansion in North China, whereas atmospheric p CO 2 and precipitation were the main factors controlling C 4 plant abundance in South China. Abstract We present the first quality-controlled relative sea-level (RSL) database for the Russian Arctic coast from the Barents Sea in the west to Laptev Sea in the east (29–152oE and 63 to 81oN). The database consists of 385 sea-level index points and 249 limiting dates and spans 24 ka to present. Sea-level indicators are derived from multiple proxies, including isolation basins, raised beaches, glacial erratics, marine terraces, laidas (salt marshes), and deltaic salt marshes. Here, we calculate the indicative meanings for all indicators and evaluated possible elevation errors. We have estimated the ages and uncertainties of index points and limiting dates using the most recent calibration datasets. In the western Russian Arctic (Barents and White Seas), RSL was driven by glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) due to deglaciation of the Eurasian ice sheet complex. For example, within the Baltic crystalline shield, RSL fell rapidly from 80 to 100 m at 11–12 ka to 15–25 m at ∼4–5 ka. In the Arctic Islands of Franz-Joseph Land and Novaya Zemlya, RSL gradually fell from 25 to 35 m at 9 ka to 5–10 m at 3 ka. The Timan coast and the Kara Sea shelf are characterized by constant RSL rise due to proglacial forebulge collapse; Yamal and the Gydan Peninsula and Novaya Zemlya are all marked by a high LGM position of RSL, followed by a lowstand and consequent rise to a late Holocene highstand of several meters. Data from the Laptev Sea coasts and shelf and the New Siberian Islands demonstrate post-LGM RSL rise with a Holocene highstand of up to 5–10 m, with scatter caused by differential tectonic movements along a diffuse lithospheric plate boundary. The collected database allowed to estimate and discuss the reasons of both spatial and temporal variability of RSL histories in different parts of the Russian Arctic. Abstract Many studies of Holocene relative sea-level (RSL) changes across Antarctica assume that their reconstructions record uplift from glacial isostatic adjustment caused by the demise of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) ice sheets. However, recent analysis of GPS observations suggests that mantle viscosity beneath the Antarctic Peninsula is weaker than previously thought, which would imply that solid Earth motion is not controlled by post-LGM ice-sheet retreat but instead by late Holocene ice-mass changes. If this hypothesis is correct, one might expect to find Holocene RSL records that do not reflect a monotonic decrease in the rate of RSL fall but show variations in the rate of RSL change through the Holocene. We present a new record of late Holocene RSL change from Torgersen Island near Palmer Station in the western Antarctic Peninsula that shows an increase in the rate of relative sea-level fall from 3.0 ± 1.2 mm/yr to 5.1 ± 1.8 mm/yr during the late Holocene. Independent studies of the glacial history of the region provide evidence of ice-sheet changes over similar time scales that may be driving this change. When our RSL records are corrected for sea-surface height changes associated with glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), the rate of post-0.79 ka land uplift at Torgersen Island, 5.3 ± 1.8 mm/yr, is much higher than the rate of uplift recorded at a nearby GPS site at Palmer Station prior to the Larsen B breakup in 2002 AD (1998-2002 AD; <0.1 mm/yr), but similar to the rates observed after 2002 AD (2002-2013 AD; 6–9 mm/yr). This substantial variation in uplift rates further supports the hypothesis that Holocene RSL rates of change are recording responses to late Holocene and recent changes in local ice loading rather than a post-LGM signal across portions of the Antarctic Peninsula. Thus middle-to-late Holocene RSL data may not be an effective tool for constraining the size of the LGM ice sheet across portions of the Antarctic Peninsula underlain by weaker mantle. In addition, current global-scale GIA models are unable to predict our observed changes in late Holocene RSL. Complexities in Earth structure and neoglacial history need to be taken into consideration in GIA models used for correcting modern satellite-based observations of ice-mass loss. In order to better explore quantitative reconstructions of net primary productivity (NPP) conditions using a dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst)-based transfer function method, we revised the tropical Atlantic modern dinocyst database n  = 208 (Marret et al., 2008). Modern assemblages from the worldwide dinocyst atlas (Zonneveld et al., 2013) were added to provide a better geographical coverage of the South Atlantic Ocean. The environmental dataset was updated using the World Ocean Atlas 2013 for sea-surface temperature (SST) and sea-surface salinity (SSS) data, as well as for 1997–2017 mean NPP values recorded during SeaWifs and MODIS spatial programs. New environmental datasets were tested using anomalies regarding mean latitudinal SST as a potential index to track past upwelling activity. Finally, preindustrial NPP values, simulated with the IPSL-CM5A-LR model developed at the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL) have been added to the dinocyst environmental database to provide NPP values consistent with the mean age of “modern” dinocyst assemblages. The transfer function method using the updated modern database was then applied to fossil dinocyst assemblages of core KZAI-01, retrieved off the Congo River mouth and covering the last 43.2 kyr. Our results indicate a dominant orbital forcing, with higher primary productivity values reconstructed during precession minima (MIS 3 and the last deglaciation) and enhanced by a maximum of obliquity during the last deglaciation and the Holocene. The synchronicity between high upwelling intensity and high terrigenous inputs during high NPP period (e.g. during the last Deglaciation) highlighted the prevalent role of river-induced upwelling activity, which is specific to the Congo River. Diatom assemblages that span the late-glacial and early-Holocene period were analyzed from three small lakes in the Greater Yellowstone region. The sites vary in surficial geology, elevation, vegetation, and precipitation seasonality, and these differences provide a tool to evaluate the importance of large-scale climatic change relative to localized catchment proces%s on aquatic ecosystem evolution. All assemblages underwent synchronous shifts in community structure in the intervals of 13.9-13.8, 13.2-13.1, 11.3-11.0 and 8.8-8.7 cal ka. The shift at 11.3-11.0 cal ka also is evident in other proxy records from these sites, such as pollen and charcoal, which suggests large-scale climatic influences on both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Because the shifts in diatom assemblages are synchronous in lakes with variable geological settings and local precipitation patterns, we infer that large-scale climatic change was the principal driver of aquatic ecosystem evolution in this region during the late-Glacial and early Holocene periods. We present a reconstruction of Holocene sea-ice variability from sediment core GA306-GC3, from the Holsteinsborg Dyb off West Greenland, which provides an index of palaeoceanographic and palaeoenvironmental conditions within this climatically sensitive region during the last 6700 yr. The reconstructed sea-ice record, combined with previously published proxy data, suggests that relatively warm conditions with reduced sea-ice extent prior to 5000 cal. yr BP were associated with the Holocene Thermal Maximum. Subsequent cooling and extensive sea-ice cover between ca. 5000 and 4000 cal. yr BP was followed by even colder conditions and persistent sea-ice cover during the Neoglacial cooling phase, particularly after ca. 1500 cal. yr BP. There is a positive correlation between West Greenland sea-ice cover and solar activity over the past 5000 yr, but the correlation is much weaker prior to 5000 cal. yr BP. In addition, there is a strong link between West Greenland sea ice and changes in the abundance of arctic benthic foraminifera species, related to different water masses of the West Greenland Current during the entire interval, even prior to 5000 cal. yr BP. Our findings indicate that sea-ice variability off West Greenland was driven not only by solar activity, but also by ocean circulation (the strength of cold Polar water from the East Greenland Current and warm Atlantic water from the Irminger Current). In this study, we quantified the mean January temperature (Tjan) and both winter (Pw) and summer (Ps) precipitation from three fossil pollen records from Lebanon. Tjan showed a strong correlation with the global temperature changes retrieved in the NGRIP Greenland ice core. The amplitude of ca. 8 °C between the Younger Dryas (YD) period and the Holocene is coherent with climate reconstructions from the Eastern Mediterranean. The overall amount of precipitation was also lower during the YD than during the Holocene but the contrast between Pw and Ps was much more reduced (less than 2 times) during the YD than during the Holocene (up to 8 times). Such different seasonal contrast compare to the present day is coherent with some climate proxies from the Levant that tend to indicate the presence of moisture during the last glacial period. In effect, the low Pw during the YD reflects the replacement of the forest ecosystem by a more shrubby or herbaceous vegetation. Concomitantly, the occurrence of an amount of precipitation higher than the current one during the summer season, along with a reduced evaporation, due to lower temperature, may have contributed to some local observed high lake levels in the area. During the last glacial period, Lebanon was not under a typical Mediterranean climate such as the one we know today, i.e. with a strong precipitation and temperature contrast between summer and winter seasons, but rather under a less contrasted climate. Mediterranean species persisted in this area due to the low amplitude of temperature change between the last glacial period and the Holocene as well as to an availability of moisture throughout the year instead of an occurrence mainly during the winter season as is the case today. The Late Glacial was a slow gradual warming associated with short, cold events that occurred between 18.0 and 11.7 ka cal. BP. Pollen analyses from deep-sea and lacustrine cores have well documented the evolution of floral communities in western Europe and suggest that climatic fluctuations influenced the evolution of terrestrial ecosystems. However, the exact impact of these climate changes on small faunal communities in southwest France is still poorly documented. Peyrazet Cave is an archaeological site located in the Lot (France) that has been excavated since 2008 and has yielded a Late Glacial sequence dated between 15.5 and 11.1 ka cal. BP. Thousands of small faunal remains resulting from a natural accumulation have been recovered. Investigation of this material has surprisingly revealed remains of two rodents that currently inhabit Central and Eastern Europe, the northern birch mouse ( Sicista betulina ) and the European hamster ( Cricetus cricetus ). The presence of these two taxa, which had migrated from the east and had been never documented in this region before the Late Glacial, is most likely related to short climatic fluctuations in the Late Glacial, suggesting more complex scenarios than traditionally accepted to explain the evolution of small faunal communities between the Last Glacial Maximum and the Holocene. The southeastern Tibetan Plateau is an important area of monsoonal maritime glaciation, and it serves as a watershed for several major Asian rivers, including the Brahmaputra River and the Lantsang River. Glacial activity is sensitive to climate change in this area. However, due to high annual ablation and accumulation in this region, ice cores over long time scales are difficult to retrieve. In addition, reconstructed glacial activity from moraine dates is usually discontinuous. Here, we use a sediment core retrieved from Laigu Lake, which is a proglacial lake located in the headwaters of the Parlung Zangbo River, the largest tributary of the Brahmaputra River, to reflect glacial activities over the last ~ 8000 years in this area. Samples of the sediment core were analyzed for magnetic susceptibility, XRF (X-ray florescence) scanned elemental concentration and grain size. The results indicated that the magnetic susceptibility and CPS (peak area counts per second) of strontium (Sr) could be used as proxies for glacial activity. The CPS of Sr and the magnetic susceptibility were lower and the glacial activity was weak before 4.3 cal ka BP. Expansion of the glaciers in this area began from 4.3 cal ka BP and continued to develop after ~ 3.3 cal ka BP. From 2.2 cal ka BP to 1.6 cal ka BP, the glaciers retreated substantially, followed by another development period until the onset of modern global warming. Based on our findings and other climate records, we concluded that glacial activity in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau areas was mainly influenced by Northern Hemisphere temperatures and summer insolation over a sub-orbital time scale, but did not respond to the Indian monsoon. High-resolution Os isotope stratigraphy can aid in reconstructing Pleistocene ice sheet fluctuation and elucidating the role of local and regional weathering fluxes on the marine Os residence time. This paper presents new Os isotope data from ocean cores adjacent to the West Greenland ice sheet that have excellent chronological controls. Cores MSM-520 and DA00-06 represent distal to proximal sites adjacent to two West Greenland ice streams. Core MSM-520 has a steadily decreasing Os signal over the last 10 kyr ( 187 Os/ 188 Os = 1.35–0.81). In contrast, Os isotopes from core DA00-06 (proximal to the calving front of Jakobshavn Isbræ) highlight four stages of ice stream retreat and advance over the past 10 kyr ( 187 Os/ 188 Os = 2.31; 1.68; 2.09; 1.47). Our high-resolution chemostratigraphic records provide vital benchmarks for ice-sheet modelers as we attempt to better constrain the future response of major ice sheets to climate change. Variations in Os isotope composition from sediment and macro-algae (seaweed) sourced from regional and global settings serve to emphasize the overwhelming effect weathering sources have on seawater Os isotope composition. Dunefields have a great potential to unravel past regimes of atmospheric circulation as they record direct traces of this component of the climate system. Along the Portuguese coast, transgressive dunefields represent relict features originated by intense and frequent westerly winds that largely contrast with present conditions, clearly dominated by weaker northwesterly winds. Optical dating and subsurface stratigraphy document three age clusters indicating main episodes of dune mobilization during: the last termination (20–11.6 ka), Middle Holocene (5.6 ka), and Late Holocene (1.2–0.98 and 0.4–0.15 ka). We find reconstructed windfields to be analogous during all episodes and dominated by strong westerlies. Yet, larger grain size diameters and dune volumes documented for the last termination support amplified patterns compatible with a southward shift and intensification of the North Atlantic westerlies during winters. Conversely, dunes deposited after the Middle Holocene are compatible with more variable windfields and weakened patterns controlled by interannual shifts towards low values of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). This work demonstrates that present windfield regimes in southern Europe are not compatible with past aeolian activity. Indeed, present day analogs indicate that wind intensities compatible with past aeolian activity are rare at present (sediment transport potentials below estimates in the aeolian record), but can occur if the jet stream is diverted to the south (i.e. 30°N with negative NAO index) or if very deep cyclones anchor around 50°N, extending their influence to the western Portuguese coast (relatively low NAO index). However, these conditions represent temporary patterns lasting around one day, while we suggest that the identified episodes of aeolian activity may represent semi-permanent conditions. Two stalagmites (6-cm and 18-cm long) from Yelang Cave (26°2′28″N, 105°44′11″E) in central Guizhou of China have been dated by ICP-MS 230 Th/U, 210 Pb and AMS 14 C dating methods. Low U but high Th contents in the young stalagmites were difficult to apply 230 Th/U dating. Instead, AMS 14 C dating solved the chronological problem of these stalagmites. Both stalagmites had fast growth rates during Holocene Optimum and the last 600 years, but absent growth between 4 and 8 ka. The δ 18 O record of Stalagmite 20120824-13 agrees well with the Dongge δ 18 O records on centennial or longer scales, showing dry climates during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and Younger Dryas and wet climates during Holocene Optimum following the solar insolation trend. The summer monsoon strength decreased from 4.12 ka to 1.5 ka, but increased during the Medieval Warm Period to produce wet climates and abundant vegetation in the study area. The δ 18 O record during the last 600 years exhibits strongly decadal variations. Twelve light δ 18 O excursions on decadal scales during the last 600 years can be identified, agreeing with the local Dry–Wet index record. The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) strongly affects decadal variability of the moisture budget in the study area, with cold PDO (La Niña condition) in favor of stronger EASM and wet climates. The δ 13 C record indicates that natural vegetation in the study area was strongly destroyed by human activity after the reign of Emperor Yong Zheng (AD 1722-1735) of Qing Dynasty. The Levant, a transition zone between the temperate Mediterranean domain and subtropical deserts, is a key area to study the latitudinal migrations of zonal climatic belts in response to glacial-interglacial conditions. The region underwent large climatic shifts during the Late Quaternary, with dramatic impacts on water resources and human populations. This paper presents the unique long-term hydroclimatic record (ca. 400 ka) from Northern Levant, derived from a sediment core taken from a small tectonic basin of northern Lebanon, the currently wettest area of the Levant. Combined biotic (pollen, biologic aquatic remains) and abiotic proxies (sediment properties, carbonate oxygen isotopes) reveal relatively high water availability during interglacials and generally drier glacials periods during the past four climate cycles. These general trends are in line with pollen records from southeastern and near east Mediterranean areas, but differ from some paleohydrological records from the southern Levant. Southward migrations of the rain-bearing mid-latitude westerlies during glacial periods and regional land topography are likely to explain the observed regional climate signatures. In addition, distinctive climate signatures of the successive wetter/drier intervals reflect interactions between global forcing (insolation, atmospheric greenhouse gas concentration), eastern Mediterranean Sea surface conditions intimately linked to North Atlantic climate and to ice-sheet and sea-ice extent at high northern latitudes, land topography, and local hydrogeological processes. Two lake records from the Kankaren region of southern Chukotka, when combined with other palynological and macrofossil data, document spatial and temporal variations in the regional vegetation history since ∼21,000 14 C/25,400 cal yr BP. Full-glacial environments were severely cold and arid in central and northern Chukotka, whereas southern sites experienced conditions that were relatively moist, although still drier than present. Southern Chukotka may represent a western extension of environments of the land bridge proper, including a possible “moisture” barrier to intercontinental migration. Shrub Betula tundra established earliest in southern Chukotka (∼15,800–14,000 14 C/19,000–16,700 cal yr BP; ∼13,000 14 C/15,300 cal yr BP central and north), Pinus pumila earliest in the north (∼9600 14 C/11,100 cal yr BP; ∼7600 14 C/8400 cal yr BP south), and shrub Alnus earliest in both the south and north (∼12,000–11,000 14 C/13,800–12,900 cal yr BP). These patterns support the presence of cryptic refugia for Betula and Alnus in Chukotka during the full glaciation. In contrast, P. pumila probably migrated into Chukotka from populations located in the northern coastal lowlands and from mountainous regions of southwestern Beringia. Eolian deposits are common in the western Pampas of Argentina, and most are assumed to be associated with glacial conditions. Stratigraphic and sedimentologic studies coupled with OSL dating in San Luis Province document for the first time a nearly continuous sequence of eolian sand sheet deposits that span most of the Holocene. Petrology and geochemical analyses indicate that the source of the sand is from pre-existing Pleistocene eolian sediments. Sand sheet deposition between ca. 12 and 1 ka is associated with sparse, Monte-type vegetation that occurs with drier conditions (MAP 450–100 mm) than the late 20th century (~ 700 mm). This paleoenvironmental inference is consistent with nearby pollen and lake level records. A persistent semi-arid environment in western Argentina during the Holocene may reflect sustained warm SSTs in the western equatorial Atlantic Ocean, which may have suppressed the pressure gradient between the South Atlantic Anticyclone and Chaco Low and thus, the flux of summer moisture to western Argentina. There appears to be a paleoclimatic “dipole” response between a dry western Argentina and a wet southeastern Brazil, which is consistent with the increasing strength of the South American Monsoon through the Holocene. Sand sheet accretion appears to cease by 800 to 200 years ago with wetter conditions and succession to Espinal vegetation prior to European contact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Holocene palaeoenvironmental evolution and glacial fluctuations at high-altitude in the western French Alps are reconstructed based on a multiproxy approach within Lake Blanc Huez (2550 m a.s.l.) drainage basin. The combination of seismic profiling (3.5 kHz), piston coring and radiocarbon dating in proglacial lacustrine sediments together with a detailed organic analysis of autochthonous and allochthonous supply allows documenting the evolution of glacier activity during the Holocene. Over the last 9700 years, the Holocene lake record has a bimodal pattern whose transition is progressive and occurring between 5400 and 4700 cal BP. During the Early Holocene, the organic lacustrine facies reflects reduced glacial activity in the catchment. This major glacial retreat seems to result from solar forcing and high summer insolation. After 5400 cal BP, lacustrine sedimentation is marked by the gradual increase both of minerogenic supply and soil erosion, suggesting a progressive transition to wetter climatic conditions. This climate change is synchronous both from the gradual decrease of summer insolation and the gradual reorganization of oceanic and atmospheric circulations, characterizing the beginning of the Neoglacial period. Both colder temperature and humid climate induced significant glacier advance, since 4700 cal BP. Over this global trend, three periods are particularly associated with higher runoff processes and higher soil erosion interpreted as wetter time intervals resulting from enhanced northern Westerlies regimes across the North Atlantic and Western Europe. They are dated from 8700 to 7000, 4700 to 2500 and 1200 to 200 cal BP. These wetter phases drastically contrast with periods of reduced glacial activities dated from the Early Bronze Age (ca 3870–3770 cal BP), the Iron Age (ca 2220–2150 cal BP), the Roman period (ca AD115–330) and the Medieval Warm Period (ca AD760–1160). An extensive, high-resolution, sedimentological–geochemical survey was done using geo-acoustics, XRF-core scans, ICP-AES, AMS 14C-dating and grain size analyses of sediments in 11 cores from the Gulf of Taranto, the southern Adriatic Sea, and the central Ionian Sea spanning the last 16cal.kaBP. Comparable results were obtained for cores from the Gallipoli Shelf (eastern Gulf of Taranto), and the southern Adriatic Sea suggesting that the dominant provenance of Gallipoli Shelf sediments is from the western Adriatic mud belt. The 210Pb and 14C-dated high-accumulation-rate sediments permit a detailed reconstruction of climate variability over the last 16cal.kaBP. Although, the Glacial–Interglacial transition is generally dry and stable these conditions are interrupted by two phases of increased detrital input during the Bølling–Allerød and the late Younger Dryas. The event during the Younger Dryas period is characterized by increased sediment inputs from southern Italian sources. This suggests that run-off was higher in southern- compared to northern Italy. At approximately ~7cal.kaBP, increased detrital input from the Adriatic mud belt, related to sea level rise and the onset of deep water formation in the Adriatic Sea, is observed and is coincident with the end of sapropel S1 formation in the southern Adriatic Sea. During the mid-to-late Holocene we observed millennial-scale events of increased detrital input, e.g. during the Roman Humid Period, and of decreased detrital input, e.g., Medieval Warm Period. These dry/wet spells are consistent with variability in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). A negative state of the NAO and thus a more advanced penetration of the westerlies into the central Mediterranean, that result in wet conditions in the research area concord with events of high detrital input e.g., during the Roman Humid Period. In contrast, a positive state of the NAO, resulting in dry conditions in the Mediterranean, dominated during events of rapid climate change such as the Medieval Warm Period and the Bronze Age. Abstract: This review summarises landform records and published age-estimates (largely based upon tephrochronology) to provide an overview of glacier fluctuations upon the Kamchatka Peninsula during the Holocene and, to a lesser degree, earlier phases of glaciation. The evidence suggests that following deglaciation from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), the peninsula experienced numerous phases of small-scale glacial advance. During the Late Glacial, moraine sequences appear to reflect the former presence of extensive glaciers in some parts of the peninsula, though little chronological control is available for deposits of this period. During the Holocene, the earliest and most extensive phase of advance likely occurred sometime prior to c. 6.8ka, when glaciers extended up to 8km beyond their current margins. However, these deposits lack maximum age constrains, and pre-Holocene ages cannot be discounted. Between c. 6.8ka and the onset of ‘Neoglaciation’ c. 4.5ka, there is little evidence of glacial advance upon the peninsula, and this period likely coincides with the Holocene climatic optimum (or ‘hypsithermal’). Since c. 4.5ka, numerous moraines have been deposited, likely reflecting a series of progressively less extensive phases of ice advance during the Late Holocene. The final stage of notable ice advance occurred during the Little Ice Age (LIA), between c. 1350 and 1850 C.E., when reduced summer insolation in the Northern Hemisphere likely coincided with solar activity minima and several strong tropical volcanic eruptions to induce widespread cooling. Following the LIA, glaciers upon the peninsula have generally shown a pattern of retreat, with accelerated mass loss in recent decades. However, a number of prominent climatically and non-climatically controlled glacial advances have also occurred during this period. In general, there is evidence to suggest that millennial scale patterns in the extent and timing of glaciation upon the peninsula (encompassing much of the last glacial period) are governed by the extent of ice sheets in North America. Millennial-to-centennial scale fluctuations of Kamchatkan glaciers (encompassing much of the Holocene) are governed by the location and relative intensity of the Aleutian Low and Siberian High pressure systems. Decadal scale variations in glacier extent and mass balance (particularly since the LIA) are governed by inter-decadal climatic variability over the North Pacific (as reflected by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation), alongside a broader trend of hemispheric warming. We investigate Lake Estanya's diatom and pollen records from the Late Glacial (LG) to the Early Holocene (EH), in order to compare limnological and vegetation responses to common climate forcing. The biotic changes recognized in this study largely agree with the hydrological evolution of the lake described previously for the same period. The diatom record shows high sensitivity to fluctuations in both lake level and salinity concentration as a consequence of climate shifts. In addition vegetation results indicate that the area could have played an important role as regional vegetation refuge. Shallow lake conditions during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) were punctuated by relatively deeper freshwaters between 19.3 and 18.6calkyr BP and at 18.0calkyr BP, as recorded by diatom shifts. A subsequent increasing aridity trend, coinciding with the Mystery Interval (MI), affected the diatom accumulation rates, which dropped to its minimum values between 17.2 and 14.7calkyr BP. Particularly dry and cold conditions during the LGM and MI are supported by the largest values of steppic pollen taxa of the whole sequence, which account for up to 40%. However, relatively high values of Betula during the Heinrich Event 1 suggest a plausible regional vegetation refuge. Abrupt cooling and warming episodes within the LG triggered remarkable ecological threshold crossings in the diatom communities, especially during the stadial/interstadial episodes. At this point, the vegetation reflects the onset of warm conditions during the Bølling/Allerød with the partial substitution of Betula by Marcescent and Evergreen Quercus, which probably indicates the arrival of temperate taxa to the area and the likely migration of birch to higher altitudes. The Younger Dryas Stadial shows a complex ecological response. Diatoms are very poorly preserved, but aquatic taxa reach their highest values. An increase in Marcescent Quercus during this cold stage lends further support to the hypothesis that this is a regional vegetation refuge. Low lake levels recorded during the EH affected the development and preservation of diatom communities. A delay in the onset of humid conditions for the EH is also supported by the vegetation composition, characterized by the maximum expansion of Juniperus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The paper presents new data on climatic, lake level and environmental changes in the Darhad Basin, northern Mongolia, during the Late Glacial and Early to Middle Holocene. Two cores, DN1 and DN2, from Lake Dood were investigated using the following proxies: grain size, total carbon (TC), total inorganic carbon (TIC), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), total sulfur (TS), δ13C, δ18O and diatom. Our reconstructions indicate that dramatic climatic and environmental changes occurred several times since ca 14 ka cal BP. A cold and dry climate of the Late Glacial changed to a relatively cold and wet climate starting around 9.5 ka cal BP in response to an Early Holocene humidization. A generally warm and humid climate prevailed in the region at ca. 7.8–5.8 ka cal BP. Later on after 5.8 ka cal BP the climate became cooler and drier. The Darhad paleolake, the predecessor of Lake Dood, disappeared during the Late Glacial to Early Holocene times and started to reappear since ca. 9.5 ka cal BP. Lake Dood fluctuated considerably in response to changes in precipitation or/and in ground ice melting between 9.5 and 5.8 ka cal BP and started to decrease at 5.8 ka cal BP. Abstract: Floodplain and aeolian sediments near Burdukovo reveal a detailed record of Holocene environmental change in the lower Selenga River Valley (Lake Baikal region, Siberia). During the late Pleistocene and early Holocene fine-grained alluvium accumulated on the floodplain followed by a period of increased landform stability and subsequent pedogenic formation. This part of the stratigraphical sequence yielded rich assemblages of terrestrial molluscs, which increase in species diversity from early pioneer communities with about ten taxa to levels containing over twice that number. The land snail assemblages also record an episode of relatively drier local habitats prior to ∼9.2 ka BP with subsequent wetter conditions lasting until ∼8.0 ka BP. This was followed by an abrupt and sustained change in floodplain deposition, shifting from overbank alluvium to aeolian sedimentation, within which a series of weakly developed soil horizons formed during the middle and late Holocene periods. The onset of aeolian processes and relatively drier conditions in the middle Holocene at Burdukovo coincides with major changes observed both in other regional palaeoenvironmental proxy records and in local archaeological sequences, although it is still not clear how the two are linked. Abstract: The history of research on the Late Quaternary Svalbard–Barents Sea ice sheet mirrors the developments of ideas and the shifts of paradigms in glacial theory over the past 150 years. Since the onset of scientific research there in the early 19th Century, Svalbard has been a natural laboratory where ideas and concepts have been tested, and played an important (but rarely acknowledged) role in the break-through of the Ice Age theory in the 1870''s. The history of how the scientific perception of the Svalbard–Barents sea ice sheet developed in the mid-20th Century also tells a story of how a combination of fairly scattered and often contradictory observational data, and through both deductive and inductive reasoning, could outline a major ice sheet that had left but few tangible fingerprints. Since the 1980''s, with increased terrestrial stratigraphical data, ever more marine geological evidence and better chronological control of glacial events, our perception of the Svalbard–Barents Sea ice sheet has changed. The first reconstructions depicted it as a static, concentric, single-domed ice sheet, with ice flowing from an ice divide over the central northern Barents Sea that expanded and declined in response to large-scale, Late Quaternary climate fluctuations, and which was more or less in tune with other major Northern Hemisphere ice sheets. We now increasingly perceive it as a very dynamic, multidomed ice sheet, controlled by climate fluctuations, relative sea-level change, as well as subglacial topography, substrate properties and basal temperature. In this respect, the Svalbard–Barents Sea ice sheet will increasingly hold the key for understanding the dynamics and processes of how marine-based ice sheets build-up and decay. Abstract: Northern peatlands have accumulated large carbon (C) stocks, acting as a long-term atmospheric C sink since the last deglaciation. How these C-rich ecosystems will respond to future climate change, however, is still poorly understood. Furthermore, many northern peatlands exist in regions underlain by permafrost, adding to the challenge of projecting C balance under changing climate and permafrost dynamics. In this study, we used a paleoecological approach to examine the effect of past climates and local disturbances on vegetation and C accumulation at a peatland complex on the southern Seward Peninsula, Alaska over the past ∼15 ka (1 ka = 1000 cal yr BP). We analyzed two cores about 30 m apart, NL10-1 (from a permafrost peat plateau) and NL10-2 (from an adjacent thermokarst collapse-scar bog), for peat organic matter (OM), C accumulation rates, macrofossil, pollen and grain size analysis. A wet rich fen occurred during the initial stages of peatland development at the thermokarst site (NL10-2). The presence of tree pollen from Picea spp. and Larix laricinia at 13.5–12.1 ka indicates a warm regional climate, corresponding with the well-documented Bølling–Allerød warm period. A cold and dry climate interval at 12.1–11.1 ka is indicated by the disappearance of tree pollen and increase in Poaceae pollen and an increase in woody material, likely representing a local expression of the Younger Dryas (YD) event. Following the YD, the warm Holocene Thermal Maximum (HTM) is characterized by the presence of Populus pollen, while the presence of Sphagnum spp. and increased C accumulation rates suggest high peatland productivity under a warm climate. Toward the end of the HTM and throughout the mid-Holocene a wet climate-induced several major flooding disturbance events at 10 ka, 8.1 ka, 6 ka, 5.4 ka and 4.7 ka, as evidenced by decreases in OM, and increases in coarse sand abundance and aquatic fossils (algae Chara and water fleas Daphnia). The initial peatland at permafrost site (NL10-1) is characterized by rapid C accumulation (66 g C m−2 yr−1), high OM content and a peak in Sphagnum spp. at 5.8–4.6 ka, suggesting the lack of permafrost. A transition to extremely low C accumulation rates of 6.3 g C m−2 yr−1 after 4.5 ka at this site suggests the onset of permafrost aggradation, likely in response to Neoglacial climate cooling as documented across the circum-Arctic region. A similar decrease in C accumulation rates also occurred at non-permafrost site NL10-2. Time-weighted C accumulation rates are 21.8 g C m−2 yr−1 for core NL10-1 during the last ∼6.5 ka and 14.8 g C m−2 yr−1 for core NL10-2 during the last ∼15 ka. Evidence from peat-core analysis and historical aerial photographs shows an abrupt increase in Sphagnum spp. and decrease in area of thermokarst lakes over the last century, suggesting major changes in hydrology and ecosystem structure, likely due to recent climate warming. Our results show that the thermokarst–permafrost complex was much more dynamic with high C accumulation rates under warmer climates in the past, while permafrost was stabilized and C accumulation slowed down following the Neoglacial cooling in the late Holocene. Furthermore, permafrost presence at local scales is controlled by both regional climate and site-specific factors, highlighting the challenge in projecting responses of permafrost peatlands and their C dynamics to future climate change. Abstract: Dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst), coccolith and planktic foraminiferal assemblages from a core in the western Iceland Sea were used to reconstruct and compare the surface ocean developments of the Holocene and the Last Interglacial (Marine Isotopic Stage or MIS 5e). While increasing subpolar planktic foraminifers from ~10ka indicate subsurface warming peaking around 7.5ka, the dinocyst data suggest that the uppermost ocean remained dominated by cold waters until ~6.5ka. A reduced advection of cold polar waters through the East Greenland/East Icelandic Current thereafter entailed warmest and most saline Holocene conditions between 6.5 and 5ka, in turn followed by a general cooling trend. By contrast, both planktic foraminifers and dinocysts show an increased presence of Atlantic (-type) waters from ~122ka onward resulting in a MIS 5e thermal optimum around 120.5ka. Nonetheless, occasional freshwater input from melting drift ice created stratified but also seasonally variable conditions during this first half of MIS 5e. This stratification signature disappeared at ~120ka when a marked repositioning of the oceanographic fronts occurred. Slightly colder conditions are indicated by both phyto- and zooplankton from there on until the end of MIS 5e around ~117ka. A late MIS 5e cooling at the Iceland Plateau is opposite to a late MIS 5e optimum observed in the eastern Nordic seas. This regional difference is likely explained by various feedback mechanisms following the major reorganisation of the oceanic fronts at ~120ka. The Holocene and MIS 5e interglacial variability is not reflected in the (quasi-monospecific) coccolith assemblages and illustrates the low sensitivity of living coccolithophore communities to subtle temperature changes in the low-temperature regions of the Nordic seas. Overall, quite different surface water properties appear to have characterised both interglacial intervals, with a higher share of warm, Atlantic elements in the planktic communities during MIS 5e. This suggests a higher contribution of Atlantic waters in the southwestern Nordic seas probably due to a more northward expansion of the Irminger Current under weakened polar East Greenland/East Icelandic currents. Such a reduced influence of polar waters in the southwestern Nordic seas may thus explain other evidence for relatively warm conditions in MIS 5e all around southern Greenland. Abstract: Changes in intensity and composition of bioturbation and trace fossils in deep-sea settings are directly related to changes in environmental parameters such as food availability, bottom water oxygenation, or substrate consistency. Because trace fossils are practically always preserved in situ, and are often present in environments where other environmental indicators are scarce or may have been compromised or removed by diagenetic processes, the trace fossils provide an important source of paleoenvironmental information in regions such as the deep Arctic Ocean. Detailed analysis of X-ray radiographs from 12 piston and gravity cores from a transect spanning from the Makarov Basin to the Yermak Plateau via the Lomonosov Ridge, the Morris Jesup Rise, and the Gakkel Ridge reveal both spatial and temporal variations in an ichnofauna consisting of Chondrites, Nereites, Phycosiphon, Planolites, Scolicia, Trichichnus, Zoophycos, as well as deformational biogenic structures. The spatial variability in abundance and diversity is in close correspondence to observed patterns in the distribution of modern benthos, suggesting that food availability and food flux to the sea floor are the most important parameters controlling variations in bioturbation in the Arctic Ocean. The most diverse ichnofaunas were observed at sites on the central Lomonosov Ridge that today have partially ice free conditions and relatively high summer productivity. In contrast, the most sparse ichnofauna was observed in the ice-infested region on the Lomonosov Ridge north of Greenland. Since primary productivity, and therefore also the food flux at a certain location, is ultimately controlled by the geographical position in relation to ice margin and the continental shelves, temporal variations in abundance and diversity of trace fossils have the potential to reveal changes in food flux, and consequently sea ice conditions on glacial–interglacial time scales. Down core analysis reveal clearly increased abundance and diversity during interglacial/interstadial intervals that were identified through strongly enhanced Mn levels and the presence of micro- and nannofossils. Warm stages are characterized by larger trace fossils such as Scolicia, Planolites or Nereites, while cold stages typically display an ichnofauna dominated by small deep penetrating trace fossils such as Chondrites or Trichichnus. The presence of biogenic structures in glacial intervals clearly show that the Arctic deep waters must have remained fairly well ventilated also during glacials, thereby lending support to the hypothesis that the conspicuous brown layers rich in Mn which are found ubiquitously over the Arctic basins are related to input from rivers and coastal erosion during sea level high-stands rather than redox processes in the water column and on the sea floor. However, the X-ray radiograph study also revealed the presence of apparently post-sedimentary, diagenetically formed Mn-layers which are not directly related to Mn input from rivers and shelves. These observations thus bolster the hypothesis that the bioturbated, brownish Mn-rich layers can be used for stratigraphic correlation over large distances in the Arctic Ocean, but only if post sedimentary diagenetic layers can be identified and accounted for in the Mn-cycle stratigraphy. Abstract: A 425cm core has been collected from the Gantang subalpine peat bog, in Pingnan County, Fujian Province of Southern China. High-resolution pollen analysis of the core has allowed for the reconstruction of past vegetation and climate changes over the last 50,000years. Today, Fujian province is located in the eastern part of middle subtropical zone where the dominant vegetation is evergreen broadleaved forest that receives its precipitation from the East Asian Monsoon. The pollen record testifies that the vegetation in Fujian varied between subtropical evergreen and warm temperate deciduous forests during the last glacial-interglacial cycle. It appears that during Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage 3, this area was covered with broadleaved forest suggesting warm and wet subtropical condition, whereas the flora was quite different with many ancient elements. The Last Glacial Maximum is distinguished by an increase in warm temperate deciduous taxa, particularly Fagus and Alnus accompanied by abundant Ericaceae, implying a spatial shift of zonal vegetation during this coldest episode in the world. Local swamp developed soon after the Younger Dryas event coinciding with the formation of peatlands in the Northern Hemisphere possibly linked with atmospheric carbon accumulation. A rapid increase in evergreen broadleaved taxa that dominated the local forest occurred at ~ca. 8.2calka BP, indicating the inception of the regional thermal maximum during the Holocene, which was generally characterised by more humid conditions. The middle to late Holocene sees a progressive decline in arboreal elements, and an increase in grasses and Ericaceae. These changes beginning from around 4kacal BP were concordant with the general weakening of the East Asian Monsoon during the Holocene, corresponding with an orbitally induced reduction of boreal summer insolation. This is the first terrestrial high-resolution record from eastern part of middle subtropical areas that evaluates the forest changes through the last glacial-interglacial cycle. Abstract: Southern South America is the only landmass intersecting the southern westerly wind belt (SWW) that influences the large-scale oceanography and controls for example the outgassing of CO2 in the Southern Ocean. Therefore, paleo-reconstructions from southernmost Patagonia are of global interest and an increasing number of paleoclimate records have been published during the last decades. We provide an overview on the different records mostly covering the Holocene but partly extending into the Late Glacial based on a large variety of archives and proxies. We particularly discuss possible reasons for regionally diverging palaeoclimatic interpretations and summarize potential climate forcing mechanisms. The Deglacial and Holocene temperature evolution of the region including the adjacent Pacific Ocean indicates “Antarctic” pattern and timing consistent with glacier re-advances during the Antarctic Cold Reversal. Some records indicate a significant accumulation control on the glacier fluctuations related to changes in SWW strength and/or position. Reconstructions of Holocene changes in the SWW behaviour provide partly inconsistent and controversially discussed pattern. While records from the hyperhumid side point to a stronger or southward displaced SWW core during the Early Holocene thermal maximum, records from the lee-side of the Andes show either no long term trend or the opposite, suggesting enhanced westerlies during the late Holocene “Neoglacial”. Likewise, centennial-scale global or hemispheric cold intervals, such as the Little Ice Age, have been interpreted in terms of enhanced and reduced SWW strength. Some SWW variations can be linked to changes in the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) consistent with instrumental climate data-sets and might be ultimately forced by solar variability. Resolving these inconsistencies in southernmost Patagonian SWW records is a prerequisite for improving hemispheric comparisons and links to atmospheric CO2 changes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Antarctic Peninsula region is currently undergoing rapid environmental change, resulting in the thinning, acceleration and recession of glaciers and the sequential collapse of ice shelves. It is important to view these changes in the context of long-term palaeoenvironmental complexity and to understand the key processes controlling ice sheet growth and recession. In addition, numerical ice sheet models require detailed geological data for tuning and testing. Therefore, this paper systematically and holistically reviews published geological evidence for Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet variability for each key locality throughout the Cenozoic, and brings together the prevailing consensus of the extent, character and behaviour of the glaciations of the Antarctic Peninsula region. Major contributions include a downloadable database of 186 terrestrial and marine calibrated dates; an original reconstruction of the LGM ice sheet; and a new series of isochrones detailing ice sheet retreat following the LGM. Glaciation of Antarctica was initiated around the Eocene/Oligocene transition in East Antarctica. Palaeogene records of Antarctic Peninsula glaciation are primarily restricted to King George Island, where glacigenic sediments provide a record of early East Antarctic glaciations, but with modification of far-travelled erratics by local South Shetland Island ice caps. Evidence for Neogene glaciation is derived primarily from King George Island and James Ross Island, where glaciovolcanic strata indicate that ice thicknesses reached 500–850 m during glacials. This suggests that the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet draped, rather than drowned, the topography. Marine geophysical investigations indicate multiple ice sheet advances during this time. Seismic profiling of continental shelf-slope deposits indicates up to ten large advances of the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet during the Early Pleistocene, when the ice sheet was dominated by 40 kyr cycles. Glacials became more pronounced, reaching the continental shelf edge, and of longer duration during the Middle Pleistocene. During the Late Pleistocene, repeated glacials reached the shelf edge, but ice shelves inhibited iceberg rafting. The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) occurred at 18 ka BP, after which transitional glaciomarine sediments on the continental shelf indicate ice-sheet retreat. The continental shelf contains large bathymetric troughs, which were repeatedly occupied by large ice streams during Pleistocene glaciations. Retreat after the LGM was episodic in the Weddell Sea, with multiple readvances and changes in ice-flow direction, but rapid in the Bellingshausen Sea. The late Holocene Epoch was characterised by repeated fluctuations in palaeoenvironmental conditions, with associated glacial readvances. However, this has been subsumed by rapid warming and ice-shelf collapse during the twentieth century. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Planktic foraminiferal assemblages in a composite section from two cores (MD06-2989/2986) off the west coast of New Zealand''s South Island (42–43.5°S) provide a 1myr (MIS 31–1) sea-surface temperature (SST) record (~3–4kyr resolution) in the Tasman Sea. A significant overall faunal change occurred near the end of the mid-Pleistocene Climate Transition (MPT) at ~600ka (MIS 15). Mean annual SSTs were estimated using the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) method. Glacial–interglacial (G–I) cycles in the MPT had ~9°C SST range, whereas in the post-MPT SST range was ~6–7°C. The SST and faunal changes imply that the Subtropical Front (STF) migrated ~6° in latitude to lie just north of the sites in MPT glacials (MIS 28–16), but only migrated 3–5° north in post-MPT glacials. These G–I latitudinal migrations of the STF west of New Zealand contrast with the situation east of New Zealand, where migrations of both the STF and Subantarctic Front were prevented by the Chatham Rise and Campbell Plateau. Subtropical Water is inferred to have only flowed around the south of New Zealand (as it does today) during MIS 11 and the Late Pleistocene–Holocene (MIS 5–1). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The geologic record of mountain glaciation is one of the most sensitive archives of terrestrial climate change during the late Quaternary Period. Pleistocene glacial deposits are exceptionally well preserved in the Great Basin of North America where they are found in close proximity to shoreline deposits of coeval paleo-lakes, representing a unique opportunity to investigate paleoclimate change using both hydrologic systems. Mountain glaciers advanced across much of the Wasatch Range, Utah during the same general time interval when Lake Bonneville expanded in the adjacent Bonneville Basin. Here we present a range-wide Latest Pleistocene glacial history for the Wasatch Range based on 22 new and 41 recalculated cosmogenic 10Be surface exposure ages, and reconstruct glaciers and climate for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and Lateglacial periods. Our results indicate three distinct, range-wide phases of glaciation in the Wasatch including the Pinedale 1 (ca. 21–20 ka), Pinedale 2 (ca. 17.5 ka) and Pinedale 3 (ca. 15 ka). Our modeling results indicate that the Pinedale 1 advance, near the end of the global LGM, was primarily driven by decreased annual temperatures with little to no change in precipitation as compared to modern. Wasatch glaciers appear to have reoccupied near maximum positions after the end of the LGM during the Pinedale 2, responding to increased precipitation in concert with rising lake levels across Western North America, and then retreated from ice-distal positions near ca. 17.5 ka. Wasatch glaciers occupied recessional positions at approximately half their maximum lengths during Pinedale 3 until ca. 15 ka, followed by rapid (i.e. several millennia) deglaciation. Our glacial chronologies establish that Wasatch glaciers responded synchronously across the range to global and regional climate forcings during the Latest Pleistocene. The new Wasatch glacial chronology, combined with global glacial chronologies and paleoclimate proxies from Western North America, suggest glacier change was driven by a combination of long-term global temperature forcing as well as regional to local modifications in precipitation. • Paleoclimate modeling and glacial mapping for the Latest Pleistocene in the Wasatch. • 22 new and 41 recalculated cosmogenic exposure ages. • Three range-wide glacial stadia at ca. 21–20 ka, ca. 17.5 ka, and ca. 15 ka. • Modeling suggests −9 to −11.5 °C depression (relative to modern) during LGM. • Modeling shows increase in precipitation (200% of modern) during Lateglacial.
