Background: Repeated fires may slow the recovery process in burned areas, thus affecting ecological succession. Aims: This paper explores the changes in likelihood of reburn and fire behaviours in various phases of vegetation recovery. Methods: We used field survey data and the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) to assess vegetation recovery in boreal forests after fires at both landscape and field scales. The Burn-P3 model was used to simulate burn probability and fire behaviours and then evaluate the overall fire likelihood and potential behaviours in different recovery phases. Key results: Vegetation began to recover in most burned areas within the first year after fire and reached prefire levels after 10–15 years of recovery. Vegetation in areas with steep slopes (>25°) and thin soil had not recovered after 20 years, accounting for 0.3% of the total burned area. The average burn probability and fire behaviour indices of the study area decreased significantly after fire owing to lower fuel levels. Conclusions: Burned areas with steep slopes and thin soil showed slower recovery rates after fire. The recovered vegetation in most burned areas still had low burn likelihood and fire behaviours 20 years post burn. Implications: Artificial regeneration and fire prevention should be carried out at highly vulnerable sites for rehabilitating forest ecosystems. The recovery process and corresponding fire likelihood of post-burn boreal forests were identified. Soil depth and slope played important roles in vegetation recovery. Environmental context: Lvliang, one of the main cities on the Fenwei Plain, is a key atmospheric pollution prevention area in China. Identification of sources of aerosols is essential to improving environmental air quality in this region. The quantitative source apportionment of carbonaceous aerosols performed in this study provides a better understanding of their sources and implications for climate and air-quality management policies in the Fenwei plain. Rationale: Organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) are major components of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and they are of concern due to their significant impacts on human health and climate. Methodology: PM2.5 samples were collected daily during four consecutive seasons from 2018 to 2019. This paper highlights the seasonal variations, sources and transport characteristics of carbonaceous aerosol in Lvliang, China. Results: The OC and EC concentrations exhibited strong seasonal variations, with the highest in winter, mainly due to high pollution caused by winter heating in northern cities, and secondary OC (SOC) contribution. The average OC/EC ratio (1.72) in Lvliang was lower than those in most regions in China, further indicating that this region was greatly affected by primary source emissions. The highest SOC/OC ratio in summer (25.3%) was due to the positive correlation between SOC and temperature. Through the positive matrix factorisation (PMF) model, four sources of carbonaceous aerosols were identified: vehicle emissions (31.26%), coal combustion (30.83%), biomass combustion (24.36%) and dust emissions (13.55%). Potential source contribution function (PSCF) results indicated that in addition to the impact of local emissions, coal emissions from Ningxia and Shaanxi, motor vehicle emissions and biomass from Inner Mongolia and Ningxia and dust from Shaanxi and Henan Provinces were the major contributors to pollution. Discussion: These data provide key information for formulating emission reduction policies and improving air quality on the Fenwei Plain and highlights the urgent need for inter-regional prevention and control measures for the cities in Lvliang. Context: Selenium deficiency occurs all over the world. Therefore, the research and development of selenium supplements has been a focus for relevant scholars. Organic selenium is safer and more efficient than is inorganic selenium. In fact, China's sika deer resources are of high quality, but the utilisation rate of deer blood is very low. Research has found that deer blood is a reasonable peptide source for the preparation of selenium-chelate supplements. The abundance of deer blood resources provided conditions for this study. Aim: To provide new selenium supplements for humans, and further develop and utilise China's sika deer industry, which to some extent also improves the utilisation rate of deer blood resources. Methods: Peptides were hydrolysed by protease, and the best hydrolysates were screened. Single-factor experiments and response-surface methodology were used to study the effects of pH, temperature, time and peptide:selenium mass ratio on selenium-chelating activity. The sika deer blood polypeptide–selenium was characterised and analysed through ultraviolet spectrum, infrared spectrum, amino acid analysis, molecular-weight determination, scanning electron microscopy, and particle-size and potential analysis. Also, thermal-stability and acid–base-stability tests were conducted. Key results: The chelating activity of alkaline protease hydrolysate was the highest, being 73.1 ± 0.16%. The pH value, temperature, time and peptide:selenium mass ratio had influence on selenium-chelating activity. Because of the cross-linking of selenium ions, the chelated selenium aggregates into larger particles with a more compact structure. The determination of amino acid and molecular weight showed that the metal-chelating activity of small-molecular peptides was very strong. Glutamic acid (Glu) and aspartic acid (Asp) play an important role in the binding of selenium ions. At the same time, the chelated SDBP–selenium had acid–base stability and thermal stability. Conclusion: Studies depicted that SDBP–selenium is suitable as a new type of selenium supplement. Implications: The preparation of deer blood polypeptide-chelated selenium provides a scientific basis for the development of new selenium supplements and the practical application of deer blood resources. In this paper, we studied the chelation of sika deer blood polypeptide with selenium ion to prepare a new type of deer blood polypeptide–selenium supplement, which is more beneficial to human body in terms of safety and bioavailability than is the inorganic selenium supplement. The best chelating process was determined, and the properties of the chelate were determined by characterisation analysis and stability test. Forest fires are important natural disturbances that influence accurate estimations of forest carbon budgets, largely owing to the uncertainty of carbon emissions from forest fires. Fuel burning efficiency is an important factor affecting accurate estimations of carbon emissions and is difficult to quantify. Here, we quantified burning efficiencies of fuel strata by fire severity and forest types and investigated influencing factors. Burning efficiencies of fuel strata increased with increasing fire severity. The tree stratum had low values of burning efficiency of 0.76, 0.83, 6.84% under low-, moderate-, high-severity fires respectively. The burning efficiency of the herb stratum was the highest, over 95%, followed by the litter stratum between 49 and 85%. Although the tree stratum accounted for the largest carbon storage of aboveground fuels, most carbon consumed during fires came from the shrub and herb strata. Among forest types, the burning efficiency of aboveground fuels in Pinus pumila–Larix gmelinii forest was much higher than the other two studied. Fire Weather Index (FWI) and temperature exerted a positive effect on the burning efficiency of understorey fuels. Precipitation mainly had a negative influence on the burning efficiency of shrub and duff. Forest fires are important disturbances that influence accurate estimates of forest carbon budgets. This paper calculates burning efficiencies of fuels across different strata grouped by fire severities and by forest types and estimates carbon emissions produced from eight forest fires. This paper discusses the current situation of Chinese village doctors and highlights the importance of increasing the number of village doctors for better health service and a stronger health system. This study reviewed relevant health policies and data from the Chinese Statistic Year Book 2016 to assess the current status of Chinese village doctors and clinics. The Chinese government has launched a set of healthcare reforms to strengthen primary health care (PHC), especially in rural areas. However, the recruitment and retention of village doctors has not been successful. The analysis of available data suggests that fewer doctors or graduated medical students want to work in village clinics and provide services for rural residents. It is widely recognised in China and other countries that a good PHC system protects the population's health at low cost. To achieve a better health system, the Chinese government should strengthen PHC, expanding the village clinics' coverage to improve access to PHC and basic public health, and introduce more sustainable policies to attract more PHC practitioners to Chinese villages. Objective: Understanding the effect of professional attitude on professional behaviour is conducive to the development of targeted measures to promote professionalism. The aim of the present study was to explore the effect of professional attitude on professional behaviour. Methods: Using a self-reported questionnaire, 212 physicians were surveyed using quota sampling in six tertiary hospitals in Nanchang City. The effect of professional attitude on professional behaviour was analysed through logistic regression analysis. Results: Providing necessary care regardless of a patient's ability to pay, working on quality improvement initiatives, informing patients of medical errors and reporting incompetent colleagues had significant positive effects on corresponding professional behaviour (odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) 11.06 (3.78, 32.40), 9.42 (1.93, 46.01), 4.04 (1.29, 12.63) and 5.51 (1.26, 24.08) respectively). However, attitudes towards minimising disparities in care, undergoing periodic recertification examinations and reporting medical errors did not significantly affect corresponding professional behaviour. Conclusions: Professional attitude affects professional behaviour, but such an effect varies with different professional norms. These findings imply that improving the professional attitude is useful but insufficient to promote medical professionalism. A management system conducive to the conversion of professional attitude to professional behaviour should be established. Effective species conservation necessitates the ability to accurately differentiate among species, a challenge compounded by taxonomic uncertainties in freshwater mussels due to substantial intraspecific variation and pronounced phenotypic plasticity in shell morphology. The taxonomic status and species validity of Scabies longata and S. chinensis, two species endemic in China, have been under continuous debate since establishment. The lack of essential molecular data required for a comprehensive systematic study has resulted in the unresolved taxonomic status of these two species. This study presents molecular data, including COI barcoding, COI + 28S rRNA, and mitogenomic data combined with morphological characteristics to assess the validity of S. longata and S. chinensis. Both morphological and COI barcoding data support the conclusion that S. longata and S. chinensis are junior synonyms of Nodularia douglasiae and N. nuxpersicae respectively. Our findings suggest the absence of Scabies species in China. Mitochondrial phylogenetic analyses were used to further elucidate intrageneric relationships within the genus Nodularia, revealing the following relationships: (N. breviconcha (Nodularia sp. 1 (N. douglasiae (N. nuxpersicae, N. nipponensis)))). We underscore the significance of employing an integrated taxonomic approach for species identification, especially given the considerable morphological disparities between larvae and adult freshwater mussels. Proper morphological identification of adult specimens is essential for extracting meaningful taxonomic characters. Background: The prediction accuracy for the rate of surface fire spread varies in different regions; thus, increasing the prediction accuracy for local fuel types to reduce the destructive consequences of fire is critically needed. Aims: The objective of this study is to improve the Rothermel model's accuracy in predicting the ROS for surface fuel burning in planted forests of Pinus koraiensis in the eastern mountains of north-east China. Methods: Fuel beds with various fuel loads and moisture content was constructed on a laboratory burning bed, 276 combustion experiments were performed under multiple slope conditions, and the ROS data from the combustion experiments were used to modify the related parameters in the Rothermel model. Results: The surface fire spread rate in Pinus koraiensis plantations was directly predicted using the Rothermel model but had significant errors. The Rothermel model after modification predicted the following: MRE = 25.09%, MAE = 0.46 m min−1, and R 2 = 0.80. Conclusion: The prediction accuracy of the Rothermel model was greatly enhanced through parameter tuning based on in-lab combustion experiments Implications: This study provides a method for the local application of the Rothermel model in China and helps with forest fire fighting and management in China. The ROS of surface fire in Pinus koraiensis plantation was measured in the laboratory for different fuel loads, fuel moisture contents, and slope conditions. Fuel particle and environmental parameters in the Rothermel model were modified. The modified I R and ϕ S parameters significantly improved the Rothemel model prediction accuracy. This study presents the spatial and temporal patterns of vegetation fires in China based on a combination of national fire records (1950-2010) and satellite fire data (2001-12). This analysis presents the first attempt to understand existing patterns of open fires and their consequences for the whole of China. We analysed inter- and intra-annual fire trends and variations in nine subregions of China as well as associated monthly meteorological data from 130 stations within a 50-year period. During the period 2001-12, an average area of 3.2 × 106 ha was consumed by fire per year in China. The Chinese fire season has two peaks occurring in the spring and autumn. The profiles of the burnt area for each subregion exhibit distinct seasonality. The majority of the vegetation fires occurred in the north-eastern and south-western provinces. We analysed quantitative relationships between climate (temperature and precipitation) and burnt area. The results indicate a synchronous relationship between precipitation variation and burnt area. Managing chronic diseases is an important issue for older adults to pursue healthy aging. Prior studies have found that self-management has positive results. A better understanding of the self-management behaviours of older adults with chronic diseases and different activities of daily living abilities will lead to effective support and assistance. This qualitative study used interview data from Chinese older adults with chronic diseases to compare self-management behaviours between different activities of daily living groups. A self-management behavioural model was constructed that included three behaviours: self-monitoring, self-evaluating and self-intervening. The similarities and differences in these behaviours between three types of older adults (i.e. energetic, self-care and semi self-care) were identified. Study findings enrich the research on self-management behaviour from a patient perspective, providing insights for older adults and care providers in understanding and supporting chronic disease self-management. Background: Emtricitabine (FTC) and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) fixed-dose combination (FTC/TDF) is generally well-tolerated, although treatment-related adverse events have been reported. Methods: We report two cases of persons using FTC/TDF PrEP who had acute neuralgia in a Chinese PrEP demonstration trial. Results: Neurological symptoms subsided upon treatment discontinuation. Symptoms were reported as similar to one case's previous experiences with dolutegravir (DTG) + FTC + tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) (for PEP), leading to permanent discontinuation of PrEP. Conclusion: Acute facial neuralgia appears to be a rare idiosyncratic adverse event to FTC/TDF. HIV PrEP is widely recommended as a crucial measure for HIV prevention. In a demonstration trial in China, this article highlights two cases where facial neuralgia emerged as an unexpected side effect of PrEP medication, not previously mentioned in official prescribing information. These findings deepen our understanding of the potential side effects of emitricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate use and provide empirical evidence to enhance PrEP implementation further and address the challenges that may arise during its utilisation. Pinellia ternata is an important natural medicinal herb in China. However, it is susceptible to withering when exposed to high temperatures during growth, which limits its tuber production. Mitochondria usually function in stress response. The P. ternata mitochondrial (mt) genome has yet to be explored. Therefore, we integrated PacBio and Illumina sequencing reads to assemble and annotate the mt genome of P. ternata. The circular mt genome of P. ternata is 876 608 bp in length and contains 38 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 20 tRNA genes and three rRNA genes. Codon usage, sequence repeats, RNA editing and gene migration from chloroplast (cp) to mt were also examined. Phylogenetic analysis based on the mt genomes of P. ternata and 36 other taxa revealed the taxonomic and evolutionary status of P. ternata. Furthermore, we investigated the mt genome size and GC content by comparing P. ternata with the other 35 species. An evaluation of non-synonymous substitutions and synonymous substitutions indicated that most PCGs in the mt genome underwent negative selection. Our results provide comprehensive information on the P. ternata mt genome, which may facilitate future research on the high-temperature response of P. ternata and provide new molecular insights on the Araceae family. Wheat (Triticum aestivum) is a major crop around the globe and different techniques are being used for its productivity enhancement. Germplasm evaluation to improve crop productivity mainly depends on accurate phenotyping and selection of genotypes with a high frequency of superior alleles related to the trait of interest. Therefore, applying functional kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) markers for drought-related genes is essential to characterise the genotypes for developing future climate-resilient wheat crop. In this study, eight functional KASP markers and nine morphological traits were employed to evaluate the 40 wheat genotypes for drought tolerance. Morphological traits showed significant variation (P = 0.05) among the genotypes, except tiller count (TC), fresh root weight (FRW) and dry root weight (DRW). PCA biplot showed that 63.3% phenotypic variation was explained by the first two PCs under control treatment, while 70.8% variation was explained under drought treatment. It also indicated that root length (RL) and primary root (PR) have considerable variations among the genotypes under both treatments and are positively associated with each other. Hence, the findings of this study suggested that both these traits could be used as a selection criterion to classify the droughttolerant wheat genotypes. KASP genotyping accompanied by morphological data revealed that genotypes Markaz, Bhakar Star, China 2, Aas and Chakwal-50 performed better under drought stress. These outperforming genotypes could be used as parents in developing drought-tolerant wheat genotypes. Estimation of the amount of dead grass fuel is essential for the assessment of risk of grassland fires. This paper develops a method to estimate the amount of dead grass fuel based on spectral reflectance. Samples of soil and dead grass were collected in the Songliao Plain, China. The spectral reflectance of these samples at different densities and at various wavelengths (350-2500 nm) was measured in the laboratory. A new spectral index for dead grass was designed based on the equivalent bands of a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite image. In the short-wave infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum, an absorption feature associated with cellulose and lignin was observed at ~2100 nm in the spectra of dead grass. This absorption feature was not present in the spectra of soil. This observation provides a basis for discriminating between dead grass and soil. The dead grass fuel index created using bands 6 and 7 of MODIS correlated significantly with the field measurements of the mass of dead grass fuel (R² = 0.84). Hence, the dead grass fuel index can be used to produce an estimate of the amount of dead grass fuel, via the regression function identified above. Such methods of estimating the amount of dead grass fuel can contribute to studies of grassland fire hazard. This study uses spectral measurements to examine the reflectance characteristics associated with cellulose and lignin near 2100 nm and develops an index for dead grass fuel. Background: China is one of the countries that set the goal to eliminate mother-to-child transmission (EMTCT) of syphilis by a target date. Active screening for syphilis among pregnant women, followed by effective treatment of maternal syphilis, is critical for achieving the goal. The China health authority issued national implementation protocols to guide EMTCT practice in health facilities. Methods: Within a cohort of infants born to mothers infected with syphilis, we obtained the data of regimens used for treatment of maternal syphilis from the National Information System of Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis B, and analysed the physician's treatment behaviour and its associated factors in a public hospital in Suzhou of China. Results: A total of 450 pregnant women who were positive for treponemal or non-treponemal antibody, or had previous infection with syphilis were included into the study for analysis. Of them, 260 (57.8%) were positive for both treponemal and non-treponemal antibodies (syphilis seropositivity), and 353 (78.4%) were treated for syphilis according to the protocol in which 123 (34.8%) were treated with two courses. Non-adherence to treatment recommended by the protocol for maternal syphilis was significantly associated with antenatal visits in the third trimester (AOR 6.65, 95% CI 2.20–20.07, P = 0.001), being positive only for a treponemal test (AOR 5.34, 95% CI 3.07–9.29, P < 0.001) or having a syphilis infection before the pregnancy (AOR 2.05, 95% CI 1.14–3.69, P = 0.017), whereas the uptake of treatment for two treatment courses was associated with attending antenatal care in 2020 or before (AOR 3.49, 95% CI 1.89–6.42, P < 0.001), being positive for treponemal and non-treponemal tests (AOR 5.28, 95% CI 2.78–10.06, P < 0.001) or having non-treponemal antibody titre of ≥1:8 (AOR 3.71, 95% CI 1.77–7.78, P = 0.001). Conclusions: Implementation of the current recommendation to offer a universal treatment for syphilis among all pregnant women who are shown to be positive for a treponemal test alone is challenging in some clinical settings in China. To meet the WHO goals for elimination of congenital syphilis by 2015, the Government of China incorporated a nationwide prevention of mother-to-child transmission program for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B into the existing maternal and child healthcare system followed by issuing the Protocol for Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis B in 2011, which was updated in 2015 and 2020. This study reported the adherence to the treatment recommendation for maternal syphilis in Suzhou, China. Environmental context: Soil carbon sequestration plays an important role in achieving the goal of carbon neutrality. We studied the characteristics of organic carbon distribution and sequestration by stable carbon isotopes in nine types of soils in China and found that macro-aggregates possessed more organic carbon with a low degree of decomposition, while the overall direction of organic carbon transfer between aggregates was from macro-aggregates through micro-aggregates to the grain-size fractions of chalky clay. These results provide a foundation for understanding soil carbon sequestration in China's cultivated lands. Rationale: Soil is the largest carbon reservoir of terrestrial ecosystems. Studying carbon turnover in cultivated soils is vital for China to achieve its carbon neutrality goal. Methodology: In this research, we investigated the distribution characteristics of soil organic carbon and its turnover among aggregates in nine major soil types in China by 13C stable isotopes. Results: Since the second national soil survey in China 1979, the surface soil organic carbon (SOC) content of cultivated lands in boggy soils, black soils and dark brown forest soils in northeastern China has decreased (129.06, 2.70 and 7.78 g kg−1, respectively) while increased in cinnamon soils, brown soils, red soils, latosols, paddy soils and chestnut soils (0.85-7.79 g kg−1). Overall, the SOC content was highest in 1-0.25 mm aggregates, lowest in 0.053-0.02 mm aggregates and higher in <0.02 mm aggregates. The Δ13C value showed that the silt-clay size class fraction > micro-aggregates > macro-aggregates. Discussion: The overall turnover direction of SOC among aggregates starts from macro-aggregates to micro-aggregates and ends with the silt-clay size class fraction. The result directly confirms both the 'hierarchical development model' and 'embryonic development model' of soil aggregate formation. The SOC flow direction and mobility potential between aggregates, as indicated by Δ13C values, suggest that cultivated soils are more susceptible to soil type than wasteland soils. Background: Factory workers are a key population for HIV transmission in China, as they often engage in sexual risk behaviours. This study aims to evaluate sexual risk behaviours and associated factors among factory workers in Shenzhen, China. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted by using multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling. Full-time workers aged ≥18 years were eligible to participate in the study. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect information. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression were applied to assess factors associated with sexual risk behaviours. Results: A total of 2029 factory workers were included. Mean age was 37.2 (±4.4) years; 48.5% were men. Two-thirds (64.9%) had had vaginal intercourse. Their sexual risk behaviours included condomless sex with casual partners in the last sex episode (23.6%), multiple sex partners (11.5%) and engaging in commercial sex (8.4%), in the past year. Having HIV/AIDS knowledge (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.24–0.70) and using a condom at sexual debut (AOR 0.08, 95% CI 0.05–0.13) were factors associated with condomless sex with casual partners in the last sex episode. Males (AOR 3.03, 95% CI 1.96–4.69 and AOR 2.19, 95% CI 1.33–3.60), local workers (AOR 2.11, 95% CI 1.01–4.42 and AOR 3.42, 95% CI 1.63–7.21), being single (AOR 2.04, 95% CI 1.39–3.01 and AOR 2.49, 95% CI 1.61–3.87), having sexual debut aged <18 years (AOR 5.98, 95% CI 3.28–10.89 and AOR 3.34, 95% CI 1.74–6.39), and substance use (AOR 2.01, 95% CI 1.38–2.93 and AOR 4.43, 95% CI 2.85–6.87) were associated with both having multiple sex partners and engaging in commercial sex in the past year. Conclusions: Sexual risk behaviours were prevalent despite most participants having basic HIV/AIDS knowledge. Future workplace-based prevention programs should target factory workers and there should be a focus on enhanced sexual education to reduce HIV transmission in China. Sexual transmission has been the main mode of HIV transmission, and data on sexual risk behaviours among factory workers from various industries are scarce in China. Sexual risk behaviours that showed associations with certain characteristics and experience of sexual debut were prevalent among factory workers in Shenzhen, China. Background: This study responds to the increasing rate of HIV/AIDS and unplanned pregnancies among Chinese college students from a sociocultural perspective, and investigates the influences of sociocultural factors in shaping sex-related beliefs and acts among Chinese college students. Methods: An online survey was conducted on a purposive sample of 1286 female college students in four cities in east and west China. Results: Significant east–west disparities have emerged in the rate of sexual intercourse experience, rate of safer sex, conservative sexual values, authority sex education, unofficial sex knowledge access and HIV knowledge. A higher rate of sexual activity, but lower rate of safer sex, were found among the students in the west relative to those in the east. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that in a large country, such as China, regional disparities in economy, social development and sexual norms are salient to affect individuals' sexual behaviours. A total of 1286 female college students in China was surveyed to investigate their sexual behaviours. The results show that between those students in the east (Shanghai and Nanjing) and those in the west (Chongqing and Chengdu), their rate of sexual intercourse experience, rate of safer sex, conservative sexual values, authority sex education, unofficial sex knowledge access and HIV knowledge level were different. Compared with the eastern students, western students have a higher rate of sexual activity, but lower rate of safer sex. Background. Dead fuel moisture content (DFMC) is crucial for quantifying fire danger, fire behaviour, fuel consumption, and smoke production. Several previous studies estimating DFMC employed robust process-based models. However, these models can involve extensive computational time to process long time-series data with multiple iterations, and are not always practical at larger spatial scales. Aims. Our aim was to provide a more time-efficient method to run a previously established process-based model and apply it to Pinus yunnanensis forests in southwest China. Methods. We first determined the minimum processing time the process-based model required to estimate DFMC with a range of initial DFMC values. Then a long time series process was divided into parallel tasks. Finally, we estimated 1-h DFMC (verified with field-based observations) at regional scales using minimum required meteorological time-series data. Key results. The results show that the calibration time and validation time of the model-in-parallel are 1.3 and 0.3% of the original model, respectively. The model-in-parallel can be generalised on regional scales, and its estimated 1-h DFMC agreed well with field-based measurements. Conclusions. Our findings indicate that our model-in-parallel is time-efficient and its application in regional areas is promising. Implications. Background: Understanding the spatio-temporal dynamics associated with a wildfire event is essential for projecting a clear profile of its potential ecological influences. Aims: To develop a reliable framework to extract fire footprints from MODIS-based burn products to facilitate the understanding of fire event evolution. Methods: This study integrated the Jenks natural breaks classification method and the density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) algorithm to extract the fire footprints in Daxing'anling region of China between 2001 and 2006 from MCD64A1 burned area data. Key results: The results showed that the fire footprints extracted by the model gained an overall accuracy of 80% in spatial and temporal domains after an intensive validation by using the historical fire records provided by the local agency. The agreement of burned area between the extracted fire patches and the historical fire records for those matched fire points was characterised by an overall determination coefficient R 2 at 0.91. Conclusions: The proposed framework serves as an efficient and convenient wildfire management tool for areas requiring large-scale and long-term wildfire monitoring. Implications: The current framework can be used to create a reliable large-scale fire event database by providing an important alternative for the improvement of field investigation. We propose an integrated framework that combines temporal classification and spatial clustering to extract fire footprints. This framework will provide more complete descriptive information than ground-based survey fire records from publicly available remote-sensing-based burn pixel products, which will assist in formulating a targeted and informed wildfire management plan and accurately account for fire-induced carbon emissions. Environmental context: Elemental selenium plays an important role in maintaining human health and the growth of plants and animals. We studied the availability of selenium in soils and agricultural crops in Guiyang City, China, and found that the soil is selenium-rich and the crops are selenium-enriched. These results can help to understand and improve the development of mountain agriculture and rural revitalisation. Rationale: Selenium (Se) is a critical element for both maintaining human health and the growth of plants and animals. The content of Se in crops is primarily determined by its speciation in soil. Therefore, the investigation of soil Se and its speciation has become a key focus of current research. Methodology: In this study, taking a typical seleniferous area in Guiyang City as the study area, we investigated selenium speciation in Se-rich soil and its distribution characteristics in both soil and crops using atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (AFS) and a five-step extraction processing methods. Moreover, we further explored the key factors that affect the distribution of Se in soil. Results: The findings are summarised as follows: (1) the Se content in all investigated samples met the standards of selenium-rich soil (0.40 mg/kg). The Se content in the soil surrounding crop roots ranged from 0.96 to 4.29 mg/kg, with an average value of 2.18 mg/kg. (2) Soil Se primarily existed in organic, residual, and iron and manganese oxide-binding species. The organic, sulfide-binding, and elemental Se species were the major contributors, accounting for an average of 47.00%, while the content of water-soluble, exchangeable, and carbonate-binding Se species was significantly lower. (3) Almost all crops, regardless of their types, were found Se-enriched, accounting for approximately 89.47% of the total crops in the study area. The average Se content was 0.35, 0.12, and 0.026 mg/kg in tea, rice, and corn, respectively. Discussion: Varying soil physical–chemical properties, such as the content of soil organic matter content and pH levels, etc. can impact the distribution of Se in soil differently. These findings can serve as a scientific foundation for the effective utilisation of selenium-rich land resources in Guiyang city. They can also support and facilitate the development of modern specialty and high-efficiency mountain agriculture, ultimately contributing to rural revitalisation and the national implementation of the Big Ecology Strategy. The millipede subfamily Pericambalinae Silvestri, 1909 is poorly understood and the taxonomic status remains controversial. Pericambalinae was regarded as either a subfamily of Cambalopsidae or an independent family. To address this issue, we conducted a molecular phylogenetic analysis and a morphological revision, and the genera and species from China are also revised. The results support the recovery of the family status, Pericambalidae, stat. nov. The morphological differences between Bilingulus Zhang & Li, 1981 and Parabilingulus Zhang & Li, 1981 are shown to be caused by post-embryonic development (anamorphosis and non-systemic metamorphosis) and both of these should be junior synonyms of Pericambala Silvestri, 1909 (Pericambala = Bilingulus , syn. nov. = Parabilingulus , syn. nov.). Three new combinations are proposed: Pericambala simplicia (Mauriès & Nguyen Duy-Jacquemin, 1997), comb. nov., Pericambala aramula (Zhang & Li, 1981), comb. nov. and Pericambala sinica (Zhang & Li, 1981), comb. nov. The mature specimens of Pericambala simplicia , comb. nov. and Pericambala aramula , comb. nov. were collected from the type localities and are described for the first time. A new species, Pericambala cordata , sp. nov. is described. After revision, Pericambalidae contains two genera and six species with one genus and four species recorded from China. Due to a deficiency in outgroup sampling, the phylogenetic status of Pericambalidae in the suborder Cambalidea remains uncertain. Variation of the gnathochilarium in Cambalidea is discussed and a key to the species of Pericambala in China is also provided. The widespread application of 'two-line' hybrid rice, based on temperature- and photoperiod-sensitive genic male-sterile lines, plays an important role in ensuring global food security. Such lines are fertile in short-day/low-temperature conditions when used for self-breeding, and sterile in long-day/high-temperature conditions when used for hybrid seed production. However, fertility instability and low hybrid seed production of sterile lines are urgent problems. The aim of this study was to increase the stability of pollen sterility by studying the critical sterile-inducing temperature and stigma vitality of 97 newly selected male-sterile lines in China from 2017 to 2020. Sterility gene source analysis showed that 89.7% of the materials contained the tms5 sterile gene. After 6 days of treatment at 23.5°C during the reproductive period, 42 male-sterile lines were sterile. After 10 days of treatment at 23.5°C, the sterility of 12 sterile lines remained stable, indicating a high level of safety for hybrid seed production. After 10 days of low-temperature treatment at 19°C, the fertile pollen rate of 47 of the 97 sterile lines was >70%, indicating a high level of seed reproduction safety. Only six of these 47 male-sterile lines could maintain low fertility after 10 days of treatment at 23.5°C, indicating that they could be used safely for both hybrid seed production and sterile line reproduction. The results of delayed pollination showed that among the six lines, only Zhong 7S had high stigma vitality, and BYXA1S and H10S-2 had medium stigma vitality. Therefore, those three sterile lines have the potential for safe hybrid seed production and high-yield seed reproduction. Based on our research, we propose a new breeding standard of dual-purpose male-sterile lines to promote the development of two-line hybrid rice. Context: In recent years, direct-seeded rice (DSR) cultivation methods have been widely adopted in Asia. Aims: The objective of this study was to evaluate the grain yield, nitrogen use efficiency and associated plant traits of DSR in northeastern China. Methods: A 2-year field experiment was conducted using two varieties under three cultivation methods (1) conventional transplanted rice (CTR); (2) wet direct-seeded rice (WDSR); and (3) dry direct-seeded rice (DDSR). Key results: The grain yield of CTR and DSR ranged from 10.16 to 9.39 t ha−1 and from 8.85 to 6.90 t ha−1, respectively, accross varieties and years. The wide difference was attributed to the differences in spikelet number per panicle and biomass. Compared with the CTR, the DSR decreased the spikelet number per panicle, which resulted in lower spikelet number per m2. Meanwhile, a significant positive correlation was observed between spikelet number per m2 and nitrogen uptake. The nitrogen uptake of CTR and DSR ranged from 151 to 153 kg ha−1 and from 96 to 132 kg ha−1, respectively. The root biomass, root length and zeatin + zeatin riboside contents in roots were higher in CTR than DSR, which contributed to the higher nitrogen uptake. Conclusions: These results suggest that DSR reduced nitrogen uptake, thereby resulting in decreased number of spikelets per panicle, and hence lower rice grain yield. Implications: These findings have highlighted the deficiencies in direct seeded rice system, and further research is required to overcome these deficiencies. In recent years, alternative rice cultivation methods have been widely developed in Asia. Realising the yield potential and raising the ceiling of yield potential even further have been the production priorities of direct-seeded rice cultivation. Background: Timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial for reducing HIV transmission; therefore, estimating the time from HIV infection to antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation becomes particularly important for people living with HIV. Methods: We used a well-characterised CD4 depletion model to estimate the time from HIV infection to initiation of ART and the rate of delayed HIV diagnosis (infection to diagnosis >1 year) and treatment initiation (diagnosis to treatment >1 year), based on HIV notification data for adults (aged ≥18 years) in Xi'an city, China, during 2008–19. Results: Overall, 7402 reported HIV diagnoses were included. We estimated more than two-thirds of HIV infections remained undiagnosed (66.1%, 9489/14 345). The estimated proportion of HIV diagnoses that were delayed (>1 year) was 80.3% (5941/7402) during 2008–19, and it increased from 72.7% (32/44) in 2008 to 83.5% (908/1088) in 2019. In contrast, the proportion of cases with delayed treatment (>1 year) was 13.1% (971/7402) during 2008–19, and it reduced from 75.0% (33/44) in 2008 to 1.5% (16/1088) in 2019. The estimated median time from HIV infection to diagnosis increased from 5.05 (IQR, 0.27–8.15) years to 5.81 (IQR, 2.31–10.28) years, whereas the time from diagnosis to ART initiation reduced from 3.06 (IQR, 1.01–5.20) years in 2008 to 0.07 (IQR, 0.04–0.12) year in 2019. Conclusions: Early treatment after diagnosis has significantly improved, but timely diagnosis of HIV infections may still require further improvement. The estimated proportion of undiagnosed HIV cases remains high in 2019 in Xi'an city and is likely to impede effective control. We estimate the time from HIV infection to initiation of ART and the proportion of undiagnosed HIV infections, based on HIV notification data from Northwest China during 2008–19 and found: first, we estimated about that two-thirds of HIV cases remain undiagnosed and this proportion was even higher among heterosexuals; and second, the time from HIV diagnosis to ART initiation has reduced significantly over the past decade. The frequent occurrence of fatalities from wildfires is an ongoing problem in China, even though great improvements have been achieved in overall wildfire management in recent years. We analysed the occurrence patterns and correlative environments of fatalities from forest fires in China from 1951 to 2018. Changes in fire policies affected changes in the numbers of fires, forest area burned and number of fatalities before and after 1987, after the large Great Black Dragon Fire that burned in the Daxing'anling Mountains in northeastern China. Most fatalities occurred in the southern, southwestern and eastern forest regions of the country where population centres are concentrated, while most of the burned area was distributed in forests of northeast China with fewer population centres. Fatalities were correlated with higher values of fire weather indices, coniferous forests, coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forests, moderate-average slopes (5.1-15°), and primarily small fires of less than 100 ha in area. These results should be a first step to help improve awareness of inherent dangers during wildfires and to assist fire managers and policy-makers in strengthening safety procedures for both professional firefighters and the public to reduce wildfire fatalities in the future. Mobile phones play an irreplaceable role in modern people’s lives. However, the radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation produced by mobile phones has also caused increasing concern. A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the effect of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation produced by mobile phones on semen parameters in 1634 men who underwent semen examination at the Department of Reproductive Endocrinology, Women’s Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, China. Analysis of variance and multivariate linear regression were used to explore differences among different groups. A P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The results showed significant associations among different groups of daily mobile phone use time and daily duration of phone calls in the percentage of progressively motile spermatozoa (P = 0.004 and P = 0.007), rapid progressively motile spermatozoa (P = 0.012 and P = 0.006) and total motile spermatozoa (P = 0.004 and P = 0.046). After adjustments for the confounding effects of age and body mass index by multiple linear regression, the results showed that the daily duration of mobile phone use had a negative effect on sperm motility. However, there was no statistically significant correlation between daily phone call duration and sperm motility. Context. The yield and quality of Leymus chinensis, a major forage resource with high nutritional value, is strongly affected by chemical fertiliser application. Aims. Comprehensive estimation of the effects of different fertilisation practices on the yield and quality of L. chinensis. Methods. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis using 206 valid datasets extracted from 10 studies on L. chinensis growth responses to chemical fertilisation in China. Key results. Yield increases resulting from fertilisation were higher on alkaline soil with a pH >7.0 and aeolian soil with a coarse texture. Forage yield and quality were also associated with the fertiliser combinations and the fertiliser types. Compared with no fertiliser treatment, the yield increase was higher under NP (NPK) fertiliser application (74.7%; P < 0.05) than N or P fertiliser alone. Application of NP (NPK) fertiliser significantly increased the crude protein content, while N fertiliser reduced the crude fiber content and increased the crude fat content. Moreover, the combined application of macro-and micronutrient fertilisers resulted in a substantial increase in yield and quality. The optimal benefits of fertilisation were achieved in aeolian soil with a pH of 7.9–9.5. Conclusions. Reasonable selection of fertilisers should therefore, be implemented to ensure high-yielding, high-quality L. chinensis based on local soil conditions in different regions. Implications. Antimony (Sb) pollution is causing serious concerns in some regions globally, such as around the XiKuangShan mine in China, which is the largest Sb mine in the world. However, remediation measures are scarce. In this study, we assessed the effects of two fertilisers, sodium dihydrogen phosphate (NaH2PO4 at 200, 500 and 2000 mg kg−1) and calcium chloride (CaCl2 at 20, 80 and 200 mg kg−1), on uptake by rice (Oryza sativa L.) of Sb, cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) from contaminated soil under flooded conditions. Despite a very low soil As concentration (10.89 mg kg−1), the results showed that flooded conditions will result in excess accumulation of As in rice grains. NaH2PO4 generally enhanced the release of As and Sb by increasing pH and competitive adsorption in the soil, which resulted in their accumulation in many tissues of the rice plants. NaH2PO4 (200 mg kg−1) significantly reduced soil available Cd concentration by increasing soil pH, which resulted in a decrease in Cd concentration in the roots and husks. CaCl2 at 200 mg kg−1 decreased soil pH, and CaCl2 treatments increased the available Sb concentration, although not as much as NaH2PO4. Both NaH2PO4 and CaCl2 enhanced the formation of root iron plaques, and in many cases increased the concentrations of As, Cd and Sb in the root plaques, suggesting a storage role rather than a barrier of root iron plaques for plant uptake of As, Cd and Sb. CaCl2 at 200 mg kg−1 was the most effective treatment for reducing As, Sb and Cd concentrations in rice grains. We conclude that utilisation of fertilisers containing P on a soil co-contaminated by Sb and Cd poses a risk of Sb and As accumulation under continuous flooded conditions, whereas addition of CaCl2 at 200 mg kg−1 may control As, Sb and Cd accumulation in grains of rice plants under these conditions. Flooding conditions will result in excess accumulation of arsenic (As) in the grains of rice plants. NaH2PO4 generally enhanced the soil release of As and Sb by increasing pH and competitive adsorption in the soil, which resulted in their accumulation in many tissues of the rice plants. Background: Disclosure of sexual orientation to others (outness) might be associated with sexual and mental health among gay and bisexual men (GBM) attending university. We aimed to characterise outness and investigate factors correlated with outness among GBM attending university in China.Methods: Between September 2018 and March 2019, GBM attending university were recruited in six cities in China. Information on sociodemographic characteristics, outness and sexual behaviours were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Each participant was tested for HIV/STIs. Correlates of outness were assessed using multivariable logistic regression.Results: A total of 400 GBM attending university were recruited, of whom 251 (62.8%) had disclosed their sexual orientation. Men who served as student leaders (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]=2.28, 95% CI: 1.46-3.54) and donated blood (AOR 1.85, 95% CI: 1.05-3.24) were more likely to disclose their sexual orientation, whereas men who had sex with a female (AOR 0.19, 95% CI: 0.05-0.74) and had group sex (AOR 0.52, 95% CI: 0.30-0.89) were less likely to disclose their sexual orientation. Mental health status, HIV/STI infections were not associated with outness.Conclusions: GBM attending university who disclosed their sexual orientation were more likely to be involved with student work and less likely to engage in high-risk sexual behaviours. Understanding the variations in plant traits across elevations may provide valuable insights into the species structure and function of forests and their responses to climate change. To explore the patterns of trait variation across elevations, we analysed 14 leaf and stem traits associated with resource acquisition and stress tolerance in Schima superba Gardner & Champion, Castanopsis chinensis (Sprengel) Hance, and Pinus massoniana Lambert trees at two elevations in a subtropical forest in southern China. Wood density increased, whereas crown width, leaf water potential at 0700 hours (ΨL-0700), and leaf δ18O decreased in high-elevation plants. Vessel diameter, daily maximum sap flux density, leaf δ13C, and leaf C and N concentrations per unit mass were comparable across elevations. We found species-specific variations in specific leaf area, midday leaf water potential, and leaf P concentration across elevations. Decreasing crown width with increasing elevation was associated with decreasing leaf δ18O and ΨL-0700, suggesting that higher stomatal conductance may moderate the loss of carbon assimilation. We elucidated the adaptive strategies of plants in response to environmental change, and showed that physiological traits varied in coordination with structural traits. Future studies incorporating multi-dimensional trait analyses can improve our understanding of the responses of forest ecosystems to climate change and global warming. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTRODUCTION: Migrant Chinese constitute a significant and increasing proportion of New Zealand women. They have lower rates of participation in breast cancer screening than other New Zealanders, but reasons for this are unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate factors affecting Chinese women's understanding of, and access to, breast health services, to better understand reasons for low participation in screening and their experiences of breast cancer clinic care. METHODS: The participants were 26 Chinese migrant women--19 recruited in the community and seven recruited from 17 eligible women attending a breast clinic between 2008 and 2010 in Wellington, New Zealand. The design was that of a qualitative study, using semi-structured interviews and thematic content analysis. FINDINGS: There were low levels of awareness about the national breast screening programme and limited engagement with preventive primary care services. Concerns about privacy and a range of communication difficulties were identified that related to oral language, lack of written information in Chinese, and limited understanding about Chinese perceptions of ill health and traditional Chinese medicine by New Zealand health professionals. CONCLUSION: Addressing communication barriers for Chinese migrant women has the potential to raise awareness about breast cancer and breast health, and to increase successful participation in breast cancer screening. Greater efforts are needed to ensure this group has an understanding of, and is engaged with a primary care provider. K+ availability is important for growth and quality of tea (Camellia sinesis L.). K solubilising bacteria convert insoluble K to available K. This study was conducted to screen K solubilising bacteria isolated from tea rhizosphere soil in Qimen county, Anhui province, China. The maximum K solubilisation colony (the ratio of diameter halo/colony was 2.54) was identified as Burkholderia sp. (storage number: M2021105) by biochemistry and molecular analysis. Pot experiments (Laterite) showed that the inoculation of Burkholderia sp. significantly improved tea plant height (Zhongcha108, 1 year old) and total polyphenols content by 21.14% and 21.58% compared with the control, respectively. Higher polyphenol level promoted the formation of theaflavin in the fermentation experiments. Further experiments showed that tartaric acid and pryuvic acid produced by Burkholderia sp. are important components associated with K solubilisation in vitro. Burkholderia sp. significantly increased soil available K by 15.12%; however, there was no significant difference in available N and P, and Cu, Mg, Zn and Ca compared with the control. K content in inoculated tea roots and leaves was significantly higher (50% and 10%, respectively) than the control. Compared with the control, exogenous supply of 60 mg kg-1 K significantly increased levels of polyphenol (53.97%), theaflavin (16.31%), theaflavin-3-gallate (20%), theaflavin 30-gallic acid ester (32.24%) and theaflavin 3,3 0-gallic acid ester (40.95%). Due to its ability to enable higher available soil K, ur study indicated that Burkholderia sp. have potential to increase total polyphenols content be a bio-inoculant for biofortification of tea. Traditional soybean (Glycine max L.) breeding has improved seed yield in high-input agricultural systems, under high nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) supply. The seed yield improvements under non-P supply and the seed protein and mineral content dilution by yield improvement were evaluated in 18 soybean cultivars released from 1995 to 2016 in south-east China. Soybean varieties were grown under rainfed conditions in the field under 0 and 35 kg P ha−1 in four sites: Dafang and Shiqian in the growing season of 2017 and Dafang and Puding in the 2018 season. The seed yield, seed protein content and nine seed nutrition concentration were examined. Soybean seed yield increased with the year of release at rates of 5.5–6.7 g m−2 year−1 under 35 kg P ha−1 and 3.9–4.8 g m−2 year−1 under non-P supply in the four experiments. The increase resulted from increases in the number of filled-pods and total seed number rather than from single seed weight and number of seeds per pod. Seed protein content and seed nutrition concentration has not changed with the year of release under 0 and 35 kg P ha−1. Grain yield was positively correlated with the seed Fe concentration. The cultivar superiority of seed yield, seed P, Zn and Ca concentration was negatively correlated with their static stability coefficient. Traditional soybean breeding increased yield under both P and non-P supply, without affecting seed protein content and mineral concentrations. A trade-off between high seed yield and seed P, Zn and Ca concentration and their stability under different environments was shown. Whether traditional soybean (Glycine max L.) breeding can improve seed yield in low-input agricultural systems was not well known. Fires can have an enormous impact on grassland systems, affecting their ecology as well as their economic productivity. As most grassland fires are caused by human activities, understanding the relationship between anthropogenic activities that cause fires and where fire ignitions occur is essential in determining where grassland fires pose the greatest risk. Any potential model to predict the spatial distribution and intensity of anthropogenic activities that cause grassland fire ignition needs to take into account the size of residential areas, roads and area of land that is cultivated. The spatial accessibility of human activities that cause grassland fire ignitions was predicted by the model to represent the ability of human driving factors that influence the occurrence of grassland fire ignitions. An index of spatial accessibility of anthropogenic fire ignition sources was overlapped with artificially generated neural networks. Within the index, five categories were created to adequately assess the level of ignition risk to grassland fires: extremely low, low, medium, high and extremely high. The percentages of actual fires in each ignition risk zone from low to high were 2.94%, 18.82%, 20.01%, 22.35% and 35.88%. This methodology provides new insight into how human factors affect the occurrence of wildland fire. Potential model theory and artificial neural networks were used to analyse the relationship between spatial accessibility of anthropogenic fire ignition sources and grassland fire pixels. As the only viviparous reptile in China that has both temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) and genetic-dependent sex determination (GSD) mechanisms, Eremias multiocellata is considered as an ideal species for studying the sex determination mechanism in viviparous lizards. However, studies on embryonic stage of viviparous lizards and morphological characteristics of each stage are limited. In the present study, the embryonic development process of E. multiocellata is divided into 15 stages (stages 28-42) according to the morphology of embryos. Embryos sizes are measured and continuous dynamic variation of some key features, including limbs, genitals, eyes, pigments, and brain scales are color imaged by a stereoscopic microscope. Furthermore, based on these morphological characteristics, we compare the similarities and differences in the embryonic development of E. multiocellata with other squamate species. Our results not only identified the staging table of E. multiocellata with continuous changes of external morphological characteristics but also developed a staging scheme for an important model species that provides a necessary foundation for study of sex determination in a viviparous lizard. Environmental context: Amines in the atmosphere play important roles in atmospheric chemistry and have potential climate effects. We characterise the concentrations, size distributions and chemical pathways of aerosol aminiums over a coastal city and marginal seas, and estimated the contribution of marine biogenic sources. This study can facilitate our understanding about the interactions between human activities, biogenic emissions and the atmospheric environment. Atmospheric amines are gaining more and more attention in the field of atmospheric chemistry owing to their important roles in new particle formation and growth. In this study, aerosol aminiums over a coastal city (Shanghai) and the Yellow and East China seas (YECS) were characterised. The concentrations of NH4+, dimethylaminium (DMAH+) and trimethylaminium + diethylaminium (TMDEAH+) over Shanghai were all found to be higher in the winter of 2018 than in the summer of 2019, suggesting their non-negligible terrestrial contributions. DMAH+ and TMDEAH+ concentrations over the YECS in summer were closely correlated and linked to surface phytoplankton biomass, implying that marine biogenic sources might be a predominant contributor to aminiums at this time. Aminiums over Shanghai generally showed a bimodal distribution with a main peak in droplet mode and a secondary peak in condensation mode, suggesting the notable contribution of aqueous-phase or heterogeneous reaction to the formation of aminiums. In contrast, aminiums over the YECS often showed a unimodal distribution, which may be caused by the competition between amines and NH3 for reaction with acidic compounds. We estimated the contributions of marine biogenic sources, ~73.6 % to DMAH+ and 80.1 % to TMDEAH+ over the YECS, using methanesulfonate/non-sea-salt SO42- as an indicator. Our results suggest that marine biogenic emission of amines from China's marginal seas may have a potential impact on coastal cities, and this source should be considered in modelling new particle formation and air quality in coastal areas. Background The uncertainty of how neurosyphilis is diagnosed and treated in clinical settings led us to investigate whether this serious manifestation of syphilis infection is properly managed in China.Methods: This national cross-sectional study of the diagnosis and treatment of neurosyphilis included 1392 clinicians at 398 hospitals located in 116 cities in China.Results: Of 398 hospitals, 244 (61.3%) failed to perform diagnostic laboratory tests and 181 (45.5%) failed to provide recommended treatment for neurosyphilis. Of 1392 clinicians, 536 (38.5%) had previously diagnosed patients with neurosyphilis, but 419 (78.2%) of the latter provided diagnoses that did not meet the criteria set by national guidelines. Of the 485 clinicians who had previously treated patients with neurosyphilis, 280 (57.7%) failed to follow national guidelines for treatment. Analysis indicated that clinicians working in North China (adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 4.24; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.65-10.88), tertiary hospitals (aOR, 3.23; 95% CI, 1.63-6.41), and hospitals specialising in sexually transmitted infections (aOR, 2.49; 95% CI, 1.24-4.99) were more likely to follow national guidelines for neurosyphilis treatment.Conclusion: Lack of knowledge in disease management poses a great obstacle to prevent the serious consequences of neurosyphilis in Chinese patients. Zeolite is an abundant potassium (K)-rich silicate mineral that could increase K supply to plants. Potassium deficiency causes lodging problems and yield reductions in paddy fields in China. However, it is unknown whether zeolite amendments alleviate K deficiency or enhance lodging-related stem morphology characteristics in rice. A 2-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of zeolite amendment (0, 5 and 10 t ha–1) and K application (0, 30 and 60 kg ha–1) on rice grain yield, stem morphology, and K nutrient status in soil and plant tissues. In both years zeolite and K application, alone or in combination, significantly increased grain yield, mainly through increased number of panicles per plant with zeolite application and number of spikelets per panicle with K application. In the top 30 cm soil layer, zeolite amendment increased cation exchange capacity by up to 31% and available K by up to 38%. Zeolite or K application alone significantly increased stem, leaf and panicle K concentrations. Zeolite promoted K allocation to rice stems, and improved stem morphology associated with lodging index. In both years, zeolite or K application alone increased stem diameter, dry weight linear density and the breaking resistance moment by up to 7.0%, 8.3% and 16%, respectively, and decreased the stem lodging index by up to 6.7%. In summary, zeolite is an alternative source of K fertiliser and can alleviate K deficiency in paddy fields in China and elsewhere. The Daxinganling Region, in Heilongjiang Province, China, has experienced considerable losses to forest resources owing to a recent increase in forest fire frequency. This necessitates the predictions of fire behaviour in this region, which requires assessment of fuel moisture content (FMC) at appropriate space and time intervals. Here, we compare and extrapolate results of vapour-exchange methods for predicting hourly moisture contents of downed wood. The FMC of larch and birch twig fuels was measured at 1-h intervals at different slope positions with respect to meteorological factors. The twigs were categorised based on diameter and degree of decay. The Nelson and Simard methods (which consider equilibrium moisture content and the associated time lag) and direct regression method (which allows direct attainment of the FMC) were used. Both Nelson and Simard methods predicted hourly twig moisture content more accurately than the direct regression method. The Simard method was the most accurate, with the lowest mean absolute error and mean relative error as well as relatively small variation coefficients based on results of the extrapolation analysis. Further, the resulting models applied to needle-leaved and lightly decomposed fuels performed better than for the broad-leaved and badly decomposed fuels on evaluation parameters. As fuel moisture affects fuel ignition potential and fire behaviour, this study was aimed to determine whether vapour-exchange methods could be used for determining hourly twig fuel moisture content in larch and birch twigs in the Daxinganling Region, China, which is adversely impacted by frequent forest fires. Background Male clients of female sex workers ('clients' hereafter) are considered high-risk and potentially a bridge population in the HIV epidemic. Non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP) is a safe and effective but under-utilised public health intervention to prevent HIV transmission. This study aims to explore clients' awareness of nPEP, intention of uptake, potential barriers to nPEP uptake and adherence, and suggestions for nPEP promotion in China.Methods: We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 20 clients in two Chinese cities in 2018. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling. The content of the interviews was analysed using thematic content analysis in ATLAS.ti.Results: Overall, just a minority of participants were aware of nPEP. A majority expressed willingness to use nPEP. Potential barriers to nPEP uptake and adherence included adverse drug reactions, price, concerns of drug efficacy, privacy issues, and forgetting to take the drugs. Almost all participants expressed the need to promote nPEP among clients. Participants suggested that the promotion of nPEP should be at hospitals, online, and be integrated with HIV/AIDS health education.Conclusions: Our findings suggested that nPEP guidelines should be formulated and implementation strategies should be developed to address barriers to uptake and adherence in order to successfully tap into the potential of nPEP as an effective HIV prevention tool. Environmental context: Microplastic fibres (MPFs) released from textiles are routinely found throughout the environment as an indicator of human impacts. The presence of MPFs in industrial wastewater effluents shows that attention should be placed not only on domestic release but also on the upstream processes of textile production. In the context of global MPF release, the ability to target and treat industrial effluents may significantly reduce a potentially major point source. Microplastic fibres (MPFs) released from textiles are routinely found throughout the environment indicating human impacts on natural systems. The most common release pathway to the environment investigated are domestic textile laundering, transport through and retention in municipal wastewater treatment plants and subsequent application of processed sludge onto agricultural fields as soil amendment. A less-studied but potentially equally relevant source is releases further upstream in the textile production chain such as industrial wastewater effluents from textile processing mills. In this context, industrial wastewater from a typical textile wet-processing mill in China was sampled to estimate MPF release. Effluent was sampled and MPF fibre number and length were quantified by stereomicroscope. An average of 361.6 ± 24.5 MPFs L−1 was identified in the mill effluent. MPF length was highly variable, yet 92 % of all fibres were shorter than 1000 µm. Additionally, the sampling strategy was used to identify the optimal volume necessary to adequately subsample the effluent. We found that total fibre counts were linearly correlated with sample volumes between 1 and 10 L, but a sampling volume of 5 L is suggested for good reproducibility, low standard deviation and ease of working volume. The significant abundance of MPFs in the industrial wastewater effluent emphasises that not only should attention be placed on domestic releases, but the production stage of textiles can also be responsible for MPF pollution. Many studies focus on the relationships between plant functional traits and tree growth performances. However, little is known about the ontogenetic shifts of the relationships between functional traits and tree growth. This study examined associations between stem and leaf functional traits and growth rates and their ontogenetic shifts across 20 tropical tree species in a tropical seasonal rainforest in Xishuangbanna, south-west China. For each species, physiological active branches of individual trees belonged to three size classes (i.e. small, diameter at breast height (DBH) 5–10 cm; middle, DBH 10–20 cm; big, DBH >20 cm) were sampled respectively. We measured 18 morphological and structural traits, which characterised plant hydraulic properties or leaf economic spectrum. Associations between diameter growth rates and functional traits were analysed across three size classes. Our results revealed that diameter growth rates of big-sized trees were mainly related to traits related to plant hydraulic efficiency (i.e. theoretical hydraulic conductivity (Ktheo) and leaf vein density (Dvein)), which suggests that the growth of large trees is limited mainly by their xylem water transport capacity. For middle-sized trees, growth rates were significantly related to traits representing leaf economic spectrum (i.e. specific leaf area (SLA), individual leaf mass (ILM), palisade thickness (PT) and spongy thickness (SP)). Diameter growth rates of small-sized trees were not correlated with hydraulic or leaf economic traits. Thus, the associations between tree growth rates and functional traits are size dependent. Our results suggest ontogenetic shift of functional traits which could potential contribute to different growth response to climate change. Plant functional traits can directly reflect plants performance under environmental. We show that traits growth relationships are strongly size-dependent in tropical rainforest in south-west China: diameter growth rates correlated significantly with leaf economic spectrum traits for middle sized trees, but for large sized trees hydraulic efficiency traits play a more important role on growth. Background Elimination of HIV is a public health priority in China, but there has been reports of an upsurge in HIV among young people. A nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted to assess the awareness of HIV knowledge, attitudes towards homosexuality and practice of sexual behaviours among Chinese aged 15-24 years.Methods: The face-to-face survey was conducted from June to August 2017, collecting data on sociodemographic characteristics, HIV-related knowledge, attitudes towards homosexuality and practice of sexual behaviours among Chinese senior high school and university students. A generalised linear model (GLM) was used to assess the different levels of HIV knowledge between groups, and identify the key contributors to HIV knowledge scores.Results: The survey was completed by 73.6% (1355/1840) of the students approached. The overall level of HIV-related knowledge was low (58.9%, 10.6/18); 48.0% (650/1355) supported same-sex marriage; and 6.9% (93/1355) self-identified as homosexual or bisexual. The major factors associated with higher scores [mean ± standard deviation (s.d.)] in HIV knowledge among students included: having received school-based HIV education (11.47 ± 3.51 vs 9.02 ± 4.14, P < 0.05); support for same-sex marriage (11.69 ± 3.33 vs 9.49 ± 4.29, P < 0.05) and older age (11.61 ± 2.78 vs 9.87 ± 4.17, P < 0.05). Compared with females, males were significantly more likely (all P < 0.05) to report masturbation (60.7% vs 7.6%), pornography experiences (77.4% vs 35.3%), sexual encounters (24.6% vs 12.3%), casual sex (37.0% vs 18.1%) and sex under the influence of alcohol (29.5% vs 12.8%).Conclusions: There is is still much room for improvement in terms of HIV/AIDS prevention and health education for Chinese young people, and more comprehensive and diverse models of education for HIV prevention are urgently needed. Melatonin (MLT) is an efficient antioxidant that protects spermatozoa against damages caused by oxidative stress. In this study, to maintain good function of Onychostoma macrolepis spermatozoa during semen preservation in vitro at 4°C, different concentrations of MLT (0.5, 1 and 2 μM) were added to the semen. After storage (0, 24, 48 and 72 h), 1 μM MLT in semen markedly improved sperm quality, as reflected by better plasma membrane integrity, the relative steady level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and slower rate of decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential. Activated spermatozoa in semen with 1 μM MLT had higher kinematic performance (i.e. percentage of motile and progressive spermatozoa and the beat cross frequency; P < 0. 05) and longer duration of sperm motility (P < 0. 05) compared with spermatozoa in semen withother MLT concentrations. Furthermore, 1 μM MLT maintained higher ATP concentrations in spermatozoa during semen storage and significantly improved the fertilising capacity of spermatozoa after 72 h semen storage compared with the other MLT concentrations. To expand wild resources of O. macrolepis , 1 μM MLT can be used as a semen additive to maintain better sperm function and enhance sperm fertilising capacity in artificial insemination (AI). Artificial reproduction is an important way to protect Onychostoma macrolepis , an atypical cave fish in China. In this study, the addition of 1 μM melatonin to semen increased the fertilising capacity of spermatozoa by decreasing ROS accumulation in spermatozoa during semen preservation in vitro. Achnatherum inebrians is an invasive perennial grass widespread in natural grasslands of north-west China and plays an important role in grassland ecological restoration. The presence of the seed-borne endophytic fungus Epichloë gansuensis in A. inebrians promotes grass growth, increases resistance to abiotic stress, and affects the rhizosphere microbial community of host plants. However, the relationships among E. gansuensis , rhizosphere bacteria and plant contents of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) during different growing seasons are not clear. We examined changes in the rhizosphere bacterial community and in nutrient contents and ratios in A. inebrians with (E+) and without (E−) E. gansuensis in May, August and December. The Shannon diversity index was higher for rhizosphere bacteria of E+ than E− plants in the three different seasons. Leaf C, N and P contents and root P and K contents were higher in E+ than E− plants in May, and leaf K and root C were higher in E+ than E− plants in August. Leaf C : N ratios were lower in E+ than E− plants in December, and leaf C : K ratios were lower in E+ than E− plants in August and December. In addition, our results indicate significant interactions among rhizosphere bacteria, C, N, P and K contents, and endophyte treatment in three different seasons. In conclusion, E. gansuensis enhanced the C, N, P and K contents of host plants, and affected nutrient ratios of A. inebrians probably by increasing rhizosphere bacterial diversity and altering rhizosphere bacterial community structure. This study provides new findings on the ecological function of the endophyte E. gansuensis , including its potential role in enhancing soil fertility. The improvements in soil fertility were utilised in extrapolating to forage grass–endophyte associations. Achnatherum inebrians is an invasive grass, and it is becoming increasingly widespread in natural grasslands of north-west China. We found that the Epichloë gansuensis endophyte played an important role in rhizosphere bacterial diversity, and nutrient accumulation and ratios of host A. inebrians. Fusarium wilt, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. mungcola (Fom), is an increasingly serious disease of mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) R.Wilczek) in China. Pathogenic variability has been observed among Fom isolates; however, there are no reports describing Fom races or pathotypes. Thus, this study was conducted with the aim of developing a set of pathotype differentials to reveal Fom pathotype diversity by assessing virulence variability of Fom isolates. First, 105 mungbean cultivars were screened against a standard virulent Fom isolate (F08). Eleven of the 105 cultivars were selected as candidate differentials of Fom according to resistance phenotype and genetic background. Second, the resistance of the 11 candidate differential cultivars was tested against 30 Fom isolates from different geographical origins in China. Highly significant differences were observed among isolate × cultivar interaction patterns, indicating that pathotype differentiation exists in Fom isolates. Based on the different reaction patterns combining with genetic background, seven of the 11 cultivars were selected to constitute a set of differential hosts of Fom pathotype, used to distinguish pathotypes of 84 Fom isolates from different geographical regions by evaluating the virulence reaction pattern. The results showed that the 84 Fom isolates were defined as 12 pathotypes. Finally, we tried to confirm whether the 12 Fom pathotypes could be distinguished by a PCR-based diagnostic method based on the two genes (SIX6 and SIX11) reported to be associated with Fom pathogenicity. However, the Fom pathotype could not be distinguished by variation of the PCR products or their resulting sequences of the two genes. This is the first study to develop a set of Fom pathotype differential hosts and identify 12 Fom pathotypes, which provides important information for resistance breeding and disease control. Fusarium wilt, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. mungcola (Fom), is an important disease of mungbean in China. Pathogenic variability of Fom isolates has been observed. The Changbai Mountains forest ecosystem is one of the best-preserved temperate mountain forest ecosystems in Asia. Since the establishment of the reserve in 1960, extensive forest fires have been excluded as a result of strict regulation and suppression efforts and thus fuels have accumulated for several decades. Due to the lack of historical fire records in the area, the risk of fire occurrence cannot be properly estimated. In this study, we used charcoal records to reconstruct the palaeo-fire frequency in the Changbai Mountains during the last 13 000 years. The results indicate that fires were frequent during 13.0–11.0, 7.0–6.0, and 2.5–2.0 calendar (cal) kyr before present (BP) and from 1.0 cal kyr BP to the present. The fire frequencies are largely consistent with other palaeoenvironmental records from the study area and we conclude that since 13.0 cal kyr BP fires were more frequent at the regional scale during intervals of a weak summer monsoon, caused by a cold and dry climate and the abundance of flammable trees. Archaeological data from the study area since 3.0 cal kyr BP indicate increasing human activity, which dominated the occurrence of local fires. In addition, intermittent volcanic activity influenced the occurrence of fires during the past millennium. The local and regional forest fire history of the Changbai Mountains for 13 000 years was investigated using charcoal records from a peatland in north-east China. China is attempting to establish a pharmacy services network in primary healthcare (PHC) institutions. This study investigated the current status of pharmacy services in China. Following a conceptual framework derived from the structure–process–outcome model, a questionnaire was sent to a sample of 700 administrators, 2000 GPs, 2000 pharmacy service providers, 2000 patients with chronic diseases and 2000 patients receiving antibiotic transfusion treatment, selected using a multistage sampling strategy, from PHC institutions in Jiangsu Province, China, in July and August 2016. The installation of pharmaceutical facilities and devices, staffing by pharmaceutical professionals, patterns of pharmacy service provision and the outcomes of these services were assessed using descriptive statistics. There were 8346 respondents from 665 institutions (response rate 95.9%). Pharmaceutical department (63.0%), dispensary (50.2%) and pharmacy intravenous admixture services (54.1%) were not established in many PHC institutions. Dispensing (22.9%), pharmacotherapy consultation for patients (19.3%), drug management (17.4%) and prescription checking (16.5%) were the most important tasks for pharmacy service providers. Patients reported lower satisfaction with the dissemination of information regarding medication use (mean (±s.d.) 8.85 ± 1.00%), the treatment of adverse drug reactions (5.65 ± 0.50%), medical insurance reimbursement (15.25 ± 2.45%) and the convenience of buying drugs (6.35 ± 0.65%). Several issues regarding the facilities and devices related to pharmacy services, the quality and responsibilities of pharmacy service providers and the outcomes of pharmacy services may hamper the development of a pharmacy service system in PHC in China. Governments and researchers globally, particularly in developing countries, are interested in the development of primary healthcare systems, of which improved pharmacy services are a key part. China, as a typical developing country, lacks reference data for policy makers and researchers in this area. Following a systemic theoretical framework, this study demonstrates the status of pharmacy services in primary health care in Jiangsu Province, China, and reports on specific problems and issues that were detected.
