Similar to many freshwater ecosystems, the Laurentian Great Lakes of North America have undergone numerous anthropogenic stressors resulting in considerable loss of biodiversity and habitat. Among Great Lakes fishes, the coregonine sub-family has endured the most extensive declines, including extinction of several species (Coregonus johannae, C. alpenae, and C. kiyi orientalis) and at least 10 instances of local extirpations of other species (C. nigripinnis, C. reighardi, C. zenithicus, C. hoyi, and C. artedi) across all 5 lakes, much of which occurred prior to the 1960s owing to overfishing, interactions with non-indigenous species, and habitat loss. Despite these declines, no federal-, provincial-, or state-mandated actions were ever implemented to conserve coregonine diversity, potentially because so much of the coregonine declines occurred prior to the enactment of federal conservation legislation. Possible explanations for inaction since enactment of that legislation include insufficient data on biological vulnerability or threats, unresolved taxonomy, and limited support from the fishery management agencies and their stakeholders prior to the 2000s. In recent decades, however, several fishery management agencies have undertaken efforts to re-introduce coregonine diversity. These efforts helped lead to development of a science-based framework to restore coregonines that was universally endorsed by fishery managers representing eight U.S. states, four U.S. tribal organizations, and the province of ON, Canada, in May 2018. The basin-wide framework is based on principles of conservation biology and adaptive management. We describe details of its key steps, including planning, restoring, and evaluating, while also describing recent implementation efforts to develop methods, improve available resources, and enhance coordination across the basin. Although our paper describes a regional effort to restore native coregonines, our adaptive-management approach could be used by other multi-agency stakeholders seeking to conserve or restore native fishes. Syncrude Canada Ltd.'s Base Mine Lake (BML), the first commercial-scale demonstration of an oil sands pit lake, was commissioned in December 2012, following in-pit deposition of fine tailings (FT) between 1995 and 2012. The geotechnical design basis for the FT in BML is that it will consolidate and densify over time, contributing to fines sequestration below the water cap. This paper presents the geotechnical performance of the FT in BML within the context of this geotechnical design basis. The FT has settled from 196.0 to 171.6 Mm3 by 2019, with cumulative settlement varying spatially between 0.3 and 6.7 m. FT settlement is consistent with the expected self-weight consolidation as modeled by finite-strain non-linear consolidation theory, and is reflected as temporal increase in the profiles of solids content and effective stress. Sonar surveying, profile sampling, shear strength, and underwater photography show that the transition of geotechnical properties at the mudline becomes increasingly distinct over time. For more than two decades the Great Lakes Fishery Commission has sought tactics to complement, and potentially replace, the use of barriers and lampricides to control sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) in the Great Lakes, but thus far without success. This paper examines the potential of modern genetic technology to suppress these invasive populations. We identified six recombinant options that appeared to be moderately to highly feasible, most of which were judged by an expert panel as extremely low or low risk, and for which research and development was broadly supported by stakeholders. The two options judged to overall best combine high efficacy and low risks were a Mendelian "sex ratio drive" and genetically modifying a prey species combined with killing or sterilizing sea lamprey that fed on it. Core issues regarding use of genetic biocontrol in the Great Lakes include technical problems associated with maintaining a sea lamprey brood line, information gaps for most options, the extent of broader public support, and the extent and nature of national and international consultation required in making decisions about control options. Ecosystem models are thought to offer advantages over single-species models in terms of management policy analysis. This hypothesis has proven difficult to test because of underlying system complexities, coupled with short time series and minimal contrast in environmental conditions or management policies. This paper presents a Bayesian statistical catch-at-age model to compare ecosystem models and test hypotheses about the management of a recreational fishery based on a predator-prey system using a relatively simple and data-rich ecosystem in a large lake, Kootenay Lake, British Columbia, where kokanee ( Oncorhynchus nerka) are the prey and piscivorous rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss) are the predator. A model that explicitly incorporates the predator-prey interaction explained long-term data of field and fishery surveys much better than single-species models without any interactions. Minimally realistic multispecies models that treated predation identically but differed in their representation of the effects of prey abundance on predator mortality produced quite different results. Management reference points, for example, differed considerably between the models. Our study thus emphasizes that the choice of a management approach for this type of fishery will depend strongly on the model form and should take into consideration results from empirically based models that include species interactions. Wally Johnson and Jack Vallentyne played key roles in the establishment of the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA), which comprises a research team, a set of protected lakes, and a field station, with the mandate to quantify anthropogenic impacts to lakes through whole-ecosystem manipulation and monitoring. We begin this collection of papers, celebrating four decades of aquatic research at the ELA, by reflecting on the historical relevance and scientific milestones of the ELA. The remaining papers encompass themes at the core of ELA research: long-term ecological monitoring of unimpacted reference lakes, ecosystem responses to anthropogenic stressors through whole-system experimentation, recovery of manipulated ecosystems from perturbation, and detailed mechanistic studies. Utilizing these approaches, papers in this issue examine a wide variety of anthropogenic impacts on freshwater including the ecosystem effects of climate change, recovery from lake acidification, upland and wetland flooding on methyl mercury levels in biota, endocrine-disrupting chemicals on fish populations, and freshwater aquaculture. These studies emphasize the value of long-term monitoring and experimentation at the ecosystem scale for understanding human impacts on freshwaters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biased perspectives of fisheries researchers may hinder scientific progress and effective management if limiting factors controlling productivity go unrecognized. We investigated whether river and lake researchers used different approaches when studying salmonid production and whether any differences were ecologically supported. We assessed 564 peer-reviewed papers published between 1966 and 2012 that studied salmonid production or surrogate variables (e.g., abundance, growth, biomass, population) and classified them into five major predictor variable categories: physical habitat, fertility (i.e., nutrients, bottom-up), biotic, temperature, and pollution. The review demonstrated that river researchers primarily analyzed physical habitat (65% of studies) and lake researchers primarily analyzed fertility (45%) and biotic (51%) variables. Nevertheless, understudied variables were often statistically significant predictors of production for lake and river systems and, combined with other evidence, suggests that unjustified a priori assumptions may dictate the choice of independent variables studied. Broader consideration of potential limiting factors on fish production, greater research effort on understudied genera, and increased publication in broadly scoped journals would likely promote integration between lentic and lotic perspectives and improve fisheries management. This paper compares, for the first time, nutrient levels and chlorophyll a measured in a set of seasonal lakes with those reported for permanent lakes in the literature. Twenty-two turloughs (karstic seasonal lakes) in western Ireland were sampled monthly from the onset of flooding (October) until they dried out (6 to 9 months). The turloughs showed similar levels of nutrients and chlorophyll a to those reported for Irish and international lakes. Chlorophyll a peaked between November and February in the majority of turloughs, sometimes with values higher than those measured in mesotrophic lakes in summer. A significant log-linear regression was found between total phosphorus and chlorophyll a, which suggests P limitation of algal biomass in the majority of the turloughs. The regression characteristics were not significantly different than those described in similar studies of permanent lakes. Patterns in seasonal variation of nutrients are also presented, their underlying causes being discussed in relation to their transport within catchments. Recent advances in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and analysis can be used in conjunction with traditional geoscience data sets to determine effective predictors for gold mineralization, from which mineral prospectivity maps can be generated that highlight potential exploration targets on a regional scale. In this paper, key components of the Archean lode gold deposit model for the Red Lake belt are selected and modeled using weights of evidence (WofE) analysis and logistic regression, leading to the creation of gold prospectivity maps. The best predictors for past and present gold producers in the Red Lake camp, according to WofE analysis include (1) elevated trace elements, Au, As, and Sb; (2) a number of alteration indices calculated from oxide geochemical data; (3) alteration characterized by pervasive and vein-style ferroan carbonate and elevated Au, As, Sb, and S anomalies; (4) proximity to the Mackenzie Island stock and diorite phases of the Dome stock; and, (5) tholeiitic basaltic flows and associated gabbroic rocks of the Balmer assemblage. Gold prospectivity maps produced by logistic regression using binary evidence maps highlight anomalous localities within known and highly prospective areas in the district (Madsen – Red Lake corridor, Balmertown – Cochenour – East Bay). A paleolimnological study was undertaken to describe the past environment of the St. Mary's River downstream of Lake Superior. Two sediment cores were obtained from the deepest part of Lake George, a fluvial lake in the river system. Rigorous analyses of radionuclides (210Pb, 226Ra, and 137Cs) and chemical properties provided an accurate sediment chronology. More than 450 diatom species from 47 genera were identified. Diatom and geochemical data indicated gradual environmental change in response to anthropogenic activities, including logging, hydrologic manipulation, and steel, leather, and paper industries. A decline in water quality occurred gradually from the late 1800s through the 20th century in response to human activities, as was apparent from an increase in eutrophic–planktonic diatom taxa. A decline in benthic taxa and an increase in contaminant metals were also contemporaneous with impacts during the 20th century. Subfossil diatoms were similar to those recorded in paleolimnological investigations from the Great Lakes. However, diatom profiles indicate that the algal supply from upstream Lake Superior has been minimal and that the cores mainly reflect environmental characteristics of the near-upstream environment. Despite stochastic sedimentary regimes and complex habitats in the lotic system, this study reinforces the value of river paleolimnology at carefully selected sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New bedrock mapping completed as part of the Nechako NATMAP Project indicates that the area between Babine and Takla lakes in central British Columbia is underlain by rocks of the Early Permian Asitka, Late Triassic Takla, and Early to Middle Jurassic Hazelton volcanic-arc assemblages of the Stikine Terrane. These are cut by large composite stocks of quartz diorite, granodiorite, and quartz monzonite previously mapped as the Late Triassic to Early Jurassic Topley intrusions. New U/Pb (n = 6) and laser [sup 40] Ar/[sup 39] Ar (n = 10) isotopic age dates reported in this paper suggest there are two distinct ages of plutons: the Topley intrusive suite with isotopic ages between 218 and 193 Ma; and, east of Babine Lake, the new Spike Peak intrusive suite with isotopic ages ranging from 179 to 166 Ma. West of the main plutonic belt is a thick volcanic succession of subaerial, porphyritic andesite flows, volcanic breccias, and rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs that have isotopic ages between 185 and 174 Ma. These rocks are assigned to the Saddle Hill Formation of the Hazelton Group. The plutonic roots of this proximal arc assemblage are most likely the coeval and compositionally similar plutons of the Spike Peak intrusive suite that have been unroofed in the area east of the Takla Fault. Major oxide and trace element data support the interpretation that the Topley and Spike Peak granitic rocks formed in a juvenile volcanic-arc environment and that magmatism is related to melts generated above a long-lived subduction zone of unknown orientation.Une nouvelle cartographie effectuée dans le cadre du projet NATMAP Nechako indique que la région entre les lacs Babine et Takla au centre de la Colombie-Britannique est recouverte de roches des assemblages d'arcs volcaniques du terrane de Stikine, soit Asitka du Permien précoce, Takla du Trias tardif et Hazelton du Jurassique précoce à moyen. Ces assemblages sont recoupés par des petits massifs intrusifs composites de diorite quartzique, de granodiorite et de monzonite quartzique qui avaient auparavant été cartographiés en tant que les intrusions Topley, du Trias tardif au Jurassique précoce.
