The Laurentide Ice Sheet's (LIS) interior had a dynamic polythermal base, but the spatiotemporal variations of subglacial processes related to ice divide migration and other transient changes remain largely unknown, limiting our understanding of regional glacial dynamics. Previous studies focused on the regional glacial landform record, while ice sheet models lacked detailed parameterization within these regions, leading to an overestimation of cold-based subglacial conditions' extent and duration. In this study, glacial sediment dispersal patterns as identified by heavy minerals, clasts, and multivariate statistics of till matrix geochemistry were used to assess ice sheet dynamics within the Quebec–Labrador sector of the LIS. The earliest ice-flow phase produced and transported till across the study area (>175 km). However, major oxide data from till matrix geochemistry show a correlation with underlying bedrock, and this relationship is relatively common in areas of thin till cover and resistant bedrock lithologies. These results suggest a switch from an early phase of widespread erosion and long, sustained sediment transport to one of more limited erosion, perhaps abrasion dominant and shorter transport. Till compositional data and related dispersal patterns add supporting evidence to earlier ice sheet reconstructions based on ice-flow indicators and 10Be data together suggesting a transition from widespread uniform warm-based conditions during the earliest ice flow, followed by the development of an ice divide, its migration, and more sporadic warm-based conditions. Consequently, a thorough understanding of ice-flow history is essential for ice sheet modelling and future mineral exploration programs in inner ice sheet regions of the LIS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is currently no active fault map for the intraplate western Quebec seismic zone (WQSZ) in eastern Canada, and consequently, no detailed finite-fault source models, which are critical for seismic hazard assessments in this region with a rapidly growing population. While previous numerical stress modelling studies have shown that mostly NNW–SSE to NW–SE-striking faults exhibit the highest potential for reactivation under the present-day tectonic stress field, such modelling is unable to take into account the interaction of faults and earthquakes. This study attempts to identify possible future rupture zones using Coulomb stress analysis. We explore the static stress transfer caused by the 1935 MW 6.1 Témiscaming, 1944 MW 5.8 Cornwall–Massena, and 2013 MW 4.7 Ladysmith earthquakes, which are proximal to faults in the WQSZ that exhibit a relatively high reactivation potential, to determine whether these faults have an increased potential for failure. The significance of Coulomb stress changes (ΔCFS) observed on the nearby "receiver" faults varied widely. Among the events analyzed in this study, only the 1935 MW 6.1 Témiscaming earthquake caused extensively positive ΔCFS (≥0.1 bar) on its receiver fault. The areal extent of the receiver fault that has been promoted to failure suggests that earthquakes with a comparable magnitude to the 1935 event can be triggered. This work is the first attempt to provide a physical basis for seismic hazard assessment input parameters in the WQSZ based on the results of numerical stress modelling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, 206 breast fillets were purchased from grocery stores in the province of Quebec and evaluated for the presence of different quality defects. Of these fillets, 48.5% showed breast muscle myopathies (BMM), 19.4% showed pale, soft, and exudative (PSE), and 6.8% showed dark, firm, and dry (DFD) attributes. BMM were equally present (P > 0.05) in fillets of economical, commercial, and high-quality brands, while PSE-like fillets were more present in economical brands (P < 0.0001). The combined effect of BMM and DFD induced significantly higher counts of Salmonella (P = 0.03) and Enterobacteriaceae (P = 0.03) in myopathic than in unaffected fillets. These quality defects also altered the nutritional quality of breast meat: BMM-affected fillets had greater fat content (P < 0.0001) and DFD fillets had lower protein content (P = 0.041) than normal fillets. The technological quality was only slightly impacted by BMM, while PSE-like fillets had higher cooking loss (P = 0.009) and a tougher texture after cooking (P < 0.0001) than DFD fillets. For the first time, this study confirmed the presence of multiple quality issues in the Quebec poultry supply chain, and provided valuable data to support future research efforts. In a previous study (Assessment 1), an on-farm assessment tool was used to establish a standard across 60 Quebec dairy farms using animal-, stall-, and management-based measures of cow comfort. The objective of the present follow-up study (Assessment 2) was to perform a reassessment using an identical cow comfort assessment tool on a subset of the original farms expected to benefit most from applying the recommended changes, and to determine the effects of the modifications on cow comfort. From the subsample of farms, 24 reported applying stall modifications based on recommendations from Assessment 1 with the aim of promoting cow comfort (Adopters), while the remaining 10 farms did not (Non-adopters). The assessment tool included 19 target areas, grouped into 9 critical areas based on measures of cow comfort that considered housing, feed-water, health, and welfare. The on-farm report of Assessment 1 was found to increase producer awareness of issues in cow comfort measures on farms, as shown by an improvement in stall design according to recommendations based on cow body dimensions and reduced injury prevalence. Routine reassessment of cow comfort measures may be important to use in supporting target achievement improvements as part of welfare improvement strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The susceptibility of commonly grown grapevine cultivars in the province of Quebec to Plasmopara viticola (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) Berl. & De Toni clades riparia and aestivalis was compared. The relationship between anatomic (density and size of stomata and type of leaf hairs) and genetic composition (percentages of Vitis vinifera L., Vitis riparia Michx. and Vitis aestivalis Michx.) factors of the grapevine cultivars and their susceptibility to the two clades was investigated. The grapevine cultivars were classified according to their susceptibility to each clade. The aggressiveness of the clade riparia was positively correlated with stomata size and negatively correlated with type of leaf hairs. However, the aggressiveness of clade aestivalis was positively correlated with stomata size and density, estimated percentage of V. vinifera ancestry, and the published downy mildew susceptibility of grapevine cultivars; and negatively correlated with estimated percentage of V. riparia ancestry. Furthermore, the grapevine cultivar classification showed that, for P. viticola clade riparia, 44.4%, 44.4%, and 11.1% of the grapevine cultivars were classified as minimally susceptible, moderately susceptible, and highly susceptible, respectively. Alternatively, for P. viticola clade aestivalis, 11.1%, 22.2%, and 66.7% of the grapevine cultivars were classified as minimally susceptible, moderately susceptible, and highly susceptible, respectively. Although some grapevine cultivars fell in the same susceptibility groups for both clades, 78% of grapevine cultivars were classified in different susceptibility groups. The findings of this study provide new information on grapevine and P. viticola interactions, and highlight the importance of knowing which clade of P. viticola is present so that downy mildew control measures can be adapted accordingly. La sensibilité des cépages de vigne couramment cultivés au Québec à Plasmopara viticola (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) Berl. & De Toni clades riparia et aestivalis a été déterminée sur disques de feuilles et sur feuilles entières sur plants. Par la suite, la relation entre les caractéristiques anatomiques (taille et densité des stomates, et poils foliaires) et génétiques (pourcentages de l'héritage génétique de Vitis vinifera L., Vitis riparia Michx. et Vitis aestivalis Michx.) des cépages et leur sensibilité aux deux clades a été étudiées, et les cépages classés en fonction de leur sensibilité à chacun des clades. L'agressivité du clade riparia était positivement corrélée à la taille des stomates et négativement corrélée aux poils foliaires.
