This paper has three objectives: i) to empirically examine labor market transitions in deindustrializing Asian economies; ii) to study the character of labor market risks and how these risks are shifting by gender, by education level, and by age in the transitional period; and iii) to rethink the commonly accepted assumptions that deindustrialization and globalization are the main causes of new labor market risks and, thus propose the possibility of institutional legacy as an important factor for such risk shifts. This study focuses on the labor market risks in the Republic of Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Three steps are taken in this inquiry. First, this study commences by empirically examining the three labor market changes mentioned above. Second, it challenges the idea of the emergence of 'new risks,' arguing instead for the concept of 'risk shift': the feature of risk shifting to different demographic groups. Lastly, with the empirical evidence already used, this paper discusses whether deindustrialization or globalization is a sufficient cause for risk shifts in deindustrializing Asian economies, proposing that institutional legacy may be an important factor in risk shift. This article explores the development strategies articulated and implemented in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan during the tenure of King Abdullah II. It begins by establishing the consistency with which national planners have adopted ideas, recommendations, and ideological scripts initially authored by the international financial institutions (IFIs). Having documented the endurance of Jordan's "policy convergence", it explains this outcome as a dialectical function of foreign interference and local agency. Demonstrating how the lines between the national, international, and transnational blur in constituting the contemporary Jordanian political economy, this case study in actually existing neoliberalism will provide a unique look at the actors, interests, ideas and processes at the heart of the country's enduring underdevelopment. This article examines the concept of neoliberalism and how it can be operationalized and measured cross-nationally. Theoretically I argue that much previous work has either been insufficiently critical of neoliberalism, oversimplified it, or conflated it with other apolitical social trends like globalization. Empirically I show that past research has captured certain parts of neoliberalism without capturing the phenomenon fully. Future research should focus on economic liberalism, industrial restructuring, employment precariousness, foreign dependence, free trade regimes, and social service privatization. Abstract Capitalist globalization has accelerated technological development but the result has been to intensify global inequalities and reproduce the structures of underdevelopment in entire world regions. In Latin America, the era of Keynesian developmentalism sought to overcome foreign domination that prevailed in modernization-style development regimes. Advances made in that era were halted and later reversed through the imposition of neoliberalism throughout the region. Neoliberal development increased developing country dependency upon foreign technologies and reproduces the structures of underdevelopment. Anti-neoliberal alternatives are possible even under conditions of severe economic crisis as illustrated by the Cuban socialist model. Other countries will likewise need to pursue more endogenously oriented technology policies if they are to overcome the crippling impact of the neoliberal period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Whereas the various forms of international political involvement are generally predictable after a decade of UN peace operations. In comparison, the various elements involved in economic reconstruction are rarely examined. The economic dimension of these interventions is more characterized by its totality-by the interaction between a variety of actors and policies-than by the dominance of a single issue. This article examines the interaction between the actors and issues involved in the economic dimension of interventions in the Balkans (Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo), East Timor, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Each case is assessed in terms of five thematic areas: the war economy and the previous power competitors; international financial institutions and donors; the international and national administration; international, regional, and national business; and long-term development. Marx admittedly could have been more helpful in making clear and precise his methodological foundations. Leaving key issues scattered over his works has forced a slow reconstruction of Marxist epistemology by subsequent students. Grasping both the philosophy of internal relations and methods of abstraction allows analysis to interpret Marx's work in four broad, separate but interrelated moments: the dialectical method, historical materialism, political-economics, and the communist political project. Failing to grasp these relations in conjunction with failing to take seriously Marx's commitment to identifiable and accepted scientific methods has resulted in both over-precision and under-precision in reconstruction of his methodology. Subsequent schools of thought have generally made similar errors that can be identified, as can progress over time in the clarification of theoretical and epistemological questions.
