Abstract Purpose To investigate whether the mixed approach is a safe and advantageous way to operate laparoscopic right hemicolectomy. Methods A retrospective study was performed on 316 patients who underwent laparoscopic right hemicolectomy in our center. They were assigned to the middle approach group (n = 158) and the mixed approach group (n = 158) according to the surgical approaches. The baseline data like gender、age and body mass index as well as the intraoperative and postoperative conditions including operation time, blood loss, postoperative hospital stay and complications were analyzed. Results There were no significant differences in age, sex, BMI, ASA grade and tumor characteristics between the two groups. Austin was first isolated as a novel polyisoprenoid mycotoxin from Aspergillus ustus in 1976. Subsequently, some new austin-type meroterpenoids (ATMTs) have been continually found. This review attempts to give a comprehensive summary of progress on the isolation, chemical structural features, biological activities, and fungal biodiversity of 104 novel ATMTs from 5 genera of terrestrial- and marine-derived fungi reported from October 1976 to January 2023. The genera of Penicillium and Aspergillus are the two dominant producers, producing 63.5% and 30.8% of ATMTs, respectively. Moreover, about 26.9% of ATMTs display various pronounced bioactivities, including insecticidal, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxicity, antibacterial, and PTP1B inhibitory activities. The chemical diversity and potential activities of these novel fungal ATMTs are reviewed for a better understanding, and a relevant summary focusing on the source fungi and their taxonomy is provided to shed light on the future development and research of austin-type meroterpenoids.

The study optimized a step-feed anoxic-oxic membrane bioreactor (AO-MBR) with methanol addition, an existing biological nitrogen removal (BNR) process, to improve total nitrogen (TN) removal and to reduce operating costs. Methanol, utilized as an external carbon source, was costly, which led to examining ways to reduce its usage by adjusting the operational parameters and modifying the configuration. The BioWin’s built-in activated sludge model underwent calibration through biokinetic batch experiments and numerical adjustments of stoichiometric and kinetic parameters to create the BNR process model. Dynamic simulations validated the calibrated model. Using the model, a modified configuration with a 20.8% increase in total anoxic volume was proposed. This increased the anoxic hydraulic retention time, improving the denitrification process. The response surface methodology (RSM) was then used to optimize the operating parameters of the modified configuration for maximum TN removal efficiency and minimum operating cost. The optimized parameters found were 0.5 mg/L dissolved oxygen, 45 days of solid retention time, 0:1 methanol distribution ratio, and 1,794.29 L/d methanol, which all enhanced the denitrification process. This resulted in a 16% increase in TN removal efficiency, a 4.12% decrease in operating costs, and an 8.96% reduction in methanol usage.

Six benzophenone derivatives, carneusones A-F (1–6), along with seven known compounds (7–13) were isolated from a strain of sponge-derived marine fungus Aspergillus carneus GXIMD00543. Their chemical structures were elucidated by detailed spectroscopic data and quantum chemical calculations. Compounds 5, 6, and 8 exhibited moderate anti-inflammatory activity on NO secretion using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 cells with EC50 values of 34.6 ± 0.9, 20.2 ± 1.8, and 26.8 ± 1.7 μM, while 11 showed potent effect with an EC50 value of 2.9 ± 0.1 μM.

The full understanding of climate feedbacks responsible for the amplification of deglaciations requires robust chronologies for these climate transitions, but, in the case of marine records, radiocarbon chronologies are possible only for the last glacial termination. Although the assumed relationships between the marine isotopic record and the orbital parameters provide a first order chronology for the previous terminations, an independent chronological control allows the relationships between orbital forcing and the climate response to be assessed over multiple previous terminations. Here we present new geochemical records of Marine Isotope Stages 11 to 7 from a western Mediterranean speleothem, establishing a new long terrestrial climate record for this region. Its absolute U/Th dates provide an exceptional chronology for the glacial terminations IV, III, and III.a. The onset of these three glacial terminations was marked by rapid δ18O depletions, reflecting ocean freshening by ice melting, thus providing an excellent tie point for regional marine records also sensitive to such freshening. These new chronologies reveal an earlier onset of the deglacial melting for the TIV and TIII.a in contrast to the generally accepted marine chronologies and indicate that the duration of these deglaciations was variable, with TIV particularly longer (~20 kyr). This study also supports that the onset of deglacial melting always occurred during declining precession index while a nonunique relation occurred with the obliquity parameter. Identifying tropical cyclone (TC) signatures in paleoclimate records enhances our understanding of long-term TC activity trends and the climatic factors influencing TC evolution. Stalagmites are considered promising archives for recording TC activity. However, despite the western North Pacific being the most TC-active ocean basin globally, it lacks stalagmite-based TC reconstructions. Here, we present a seasonally resolved stalagmite δ18O record from XRY cave in Southeast China, covering the period from 1951 to 2018 CE, to identify annual signals of strong TC activity. We propose that the minimum seasonal XRY δ18O value of each year can reconstruct regional TC activity, achieving an identification rate of 86% for strong TC years in study area. This demonstrates the feasibility of using stalagmites for TC reconstruction in Southeast China. Moreover, our research shows that inland stalagmites can still capture TC activity signals, which will promote the use of stalagmites in obtaining long-term records of post-landfall TC activity and inland impacts. The autophagy gene immunity‐related GTPase M (IRGM) can affect the immune response against intracellular pathogens. The study was performed to determine any possible association between three IRGM single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs4958842, rs4958843 and rs4958846) and chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. A total of 171 chronic HBV‐infected individuals and 171 healthy controls were collected. Peripheral blood cells and Sanger sequencing were used to extract genomic DNA and determine the SNP genotypes, respectively. The C allele of rs4958843 is a risk factor for chronic HBV infection in various genetic models, including allelic, codominant and dominant models, with the following respective statistical data: allelic (T vs. C: OR = 1.371, 95% CI = 1.009–1.863, p =.043), codominant (TT vs. CC: OR = 2.137, 95% CI = 1.104–4.138, p =.024) and dominant (TT + TC vs. CC: OR = 1.976, 95% CI = 1.106–3.533, p =.021) models. The genotype and allele distributions of rs4958842 and rs4958846 showed no significant differences between chronic HBV infection patients and healthy controls. IRGM rs4958843 CC genotype carriers had significantly elevated values of alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase alpha‐fetoprotein and total bilirubin (OR = 3.467, 95%CI = 1.167–10.298), which was positively associated with the disease progression of HBV infection. Mutant allele C of IRGM rs4958843 polymorphism is associated with the risk of chronic HBV infection in the Han people in central China and contributes to the disease progression. The 8.2 ka event has been extensively investigated as a remarkable single event but rarely considered as a part of multi-centennial climatic evolution. Here, we present absolutely dated speleothem multi-proxy records spanning 9.0–7.9 ka from Beijing in North China, near the northern limit of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and thus sensitive to climate change, to provide evidence of the intensified multi-decadal climatic oscillations since 8.52 ka. Three extreme excursions characterized by inter-decadal consecutive δ18 O excursions exceeding ±1σ are identified from 8.52 ka in our speleothem record. The earlier two are characterized by enriched 18 O at ∼8.50 and 8.20 ka, respectively, suggesting a prolonged arid event, which is supported by the positive trend in δ13 C values, increased trace element ratios, and lower growth rate. Following the 8.2 ka event, an excessive rebound immediately emerges in our δ18 O and trace element records but moderate in the δ13 C, probably suggesting pluvial conditions and nonlinear response of the local ecosystem. Following two similar severe droughts at 8.50 and 8.20 ka, the different behavior of δ13 C suggests the recovering degree of resilient ecosystem responding to different rebounded rainfall intensity. A comparison with other high-resolution records suggests that the two droughts–one pluvial pattern between 8.52 and 8.0 ka is of global significance instead of being a regional phenomenon, and is causally linked to the slowdown and acceleration of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation that was further dominated by the freshwater injections in the North Atlantic. The profound impact of the Khmer Empire on Southeast Asia renders the Angkor Period particularly significant in guiding contemporary societies to advocate and promote policies that respond to climate change. We present a new continuous multi-proxy speleothem dataset from Tonle Sap Lake Basin, investigating hydroclimate variability and the paleoenvironment of Cambodia during the Angkor Period from the 9th to 15th centuries. In addition, two important climatic events on a decadal scale are clearly reconstructed. The first is the reduction of precipitation between 800 and 1000 AD and the relatively significant drought that the regional environment may have experienced from 950 to 1000 AD. The second is the anomalous wet period between 1000 and 1200 AD, during which the Southern Oscillation Index also reached its negative peak after a thousand years. The wet and dry conditions are highly consistent with the El Niño-dominated and northward Intertropical Convergence Zone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A polydopamine polyelectrolyte hydrogel was developed by ionic crosslinking dextran sulfate with a copolymer of polyethyleneimine and polydopamine. Gelation was promoted by the slow hydrolysis of glucono-δ-lactone. Within this hydrogel, silver nanoparticles were generated in situ, ranging from 25 nm to 200 nm in size. The antibacterial activity of the hydrogel was proportional to the quantity of silver nanoparticles produced, increasing as the nanoparticle count rose. The hydrogels demonstrated broad-spectrum antibacterial efficacy at concentrations up to 108 cells/mL for P. aeruginosa, K. pneumoniae, E. coli and S. aureus, the four most prevalent bacterial pathogens in chronic septic wounds. In ex vivo studies on human skin, biocompatibility was enhanced by the presence of polydopamine. Dextran sulfate is a known irritant, but formulations with polydopamine showed improved cell viability and reduced levels of the inflammatory biomarkers IL-8 and IL-1α. Silver nanoparticles can inhibit cell migration, but an ex vivo human skin study showed significant re-epithelialization in wounds treated with hydrogels containing silver nanoparticles. Conclusions: Compared with the middle approach, the mixed approach is a safe and advantageous way that can significantly shorten the operation time, reduce intraoperative bleeding and postoperative drainage volume, and does not prolong the length of hospital stay or increase the morbidity postoperative complications. The Indo-Pacific, a vast biogeographic of Earth, is influenced by both the Indian and East Asian monsoons. Despite its geographical importance, this region has been less studied compared to East Asia and India. Here, we present speleothem records from southern Thailand that cover the last 1500 years, including a hiatus during the Little Ice Age, providing insights into the interactions among climate dynamics, human influences, and ecological responses to climate change. Notably, our records lack the characteristic cold and warm periods observed in other regions, such as the Dark Ages Cold Period and Medieval Warm Period, which may reflect the complexity of the tropical climate system or the region's unique topography. The analysis reveals a link between ENSO multi-decadal variability and hydroclimate conditions in southern Thailand, as evidenced by speleothem δ18O. Furthermore, a comparison between speleothem δ13C and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) indicates significant vegetation changes in the last three decades, corresponding with increased atmospheric CO2 levels and expansion of agricultural land due to human activities during the Current Warm Period. Additionally, our study suggests that an abrupt increase in sea surface temperatures may enhance vegetation growth in the Indo-Pacific by influencing atmospheric circulation and increasing precipitation. Speleothem δ13C in monsoonal China differs from speleothem δ18O, which is widely used as a climatic proxy for several complex control reasons. Nevertheless, δ13C records have the potential to reveal the implications of hydroclimatic changes. This study reports a speleothem δ13C record from Didonghe (DDH) Cave in central China spanning 34 to 13 kyr BP. After we investigated the factors that influence speleothem δ13C, we found that the δ13C record showed that DDH Cave can prompt directional shifts via local hydroclimatic changes, such as in vegetation types, biomass, and rock–water interaction processes, suggesting that δ13C is mainly controlled by the local hydroclimate. Ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) results revealed a coupling relationship between δ18O and δ13C on multiple timescales, which suggested that changes in precipitation caused by large-scale monsoonal circulation are controlled by regional hydrological conditions to a great extent. However, the hydrological conditions of the cave were relatively mild and humid during the last glacial maximum (LGM), which revealed the impact of evaporation on changes in the region's hydrological conditions. We also found that the δ18O and δ13C profiles decoupled when δ13C changed with a shift in the location of the westerly during HS1. The δ13C record correlates well with other paleoclimate records, suggesting that regional hydrological conditions are also modulated by the Earth's internal and external driving factors.
