Detailed palaeogeographical studies of the accumulative fan in the Serteyka River valley in W Russia and underlying biogenic deposits were carried out. The base of a representative core of biogenic sediments in the distal zone is dated to 1291 BC, while its top to 1631 AD. In this paper, palynological, plant macrofossils, Chironomide and Cladocera, geochemical, geochronological and sedimentological analysis were performed. Four phases of biogenic deposition were distinguished by pollen and geochemical analyses. Two of them coincide with the climatic fluctuation during Medieval Climate Anomaly and Little Ice Age. During the formation of the fan, overbank deposits were accumulated also, indicating numerous and intense floods, which are in line with the trend observed for other sites in this region. The accumulative fan is formed by lower, middle and upper deluvia and agricultural diamicton in its top. All units have specific sedimentological and geochemical features as well as low admixture of plant macrofossils. The beginning of the formation of this relief form dates back to the second half of the 17th century AD, and the end of the accumulation falls on the second half of the 18th century AD. Our work suggests that natural conditions had an impact on the formation and development of studied accumulative fan, however, the decisive factor causing the intensification of the slope processes were related with deforestation resulted from strong human impact, which was marked in palynological and macrofossils analyses (e.g. increase in the contribution of plants macrofossils related to agriculture). Land use and settlement dynamics of two rural areas defined by the contact karst spring is the subject of this paper. The research area consists of the spring catchment of Ljubija in the northeast part of Slovenia and Gradole, the most water-rich spring in Istria (northwest Croatia), have been surveyed in terms of environmental conditions, and social and historic land use aspects. We used Statistical data and Geographic Information System (GIS) methods. Via a multidisciplinary approach we discovered that: 1) environmentally, both areas are actively managed due to drinking water resources— Gradole has 9.8% and Ljubija 8.9% of protected area; 2) data regarding social features showed that human pressure has not negatively influenced the natural settings and water supply vulnerability—the area of the Ljubija spring catchment has lower population density compared to the area of the Gradole spring catchment (1.4 inhabitants/ km² compared to 38.7 inhabitants/km² ), but the Ljubija area has more pronounced growth in the number of households—I2020/1948 = 115 compared to I2020/1948 = 88.1 at the Gradole spring catchment; and 3) the limited regeneration abilities of the karst water bodies have been preserved by the prevailing share of forest—land use data showed 84.8% for Ljubija and 34.4% for Gradole. Channel incision is an evident trend for river evolution in many European rivers and notably the Western Carpathians, whose former braided and multichannel wandering river system is transforming into a single‐thread channel, but it is often difficult to separate drivers and determine if incision is finished or is still ongoing. To overpass these research gaps, this paper presents an innovative approach to assess the multidecadal incision of the Belá River in the Western Carpathians since 1949 by LiDAR‐based analyses of floodplain surfaces above the river channel dated from historical aerial images. Detailed analyses of ongoing incision were also calculated based on DEM of differences (DoD) using Structure‐from‐Motion (SfM) photogrammetry‐derived topo‐bathymetric models. The study applied the BACI (Before‐After‐Control‐Impact) approach that compared pre‐state (Before), post‐state (After) and reach (Control) that is not affected by potential external effects with degraded (impacted) reach to be able to distinguish the driver effects. Floodplain channel surface analyses indicate the maximum incision up to 4 m and incision rate of 5.7 cm/year that occurred in the most degraded reach. Moreover, cross‐section profiles point to accelerated incision of 24.5 cm/year in the last 10 years (2011–2021) by the propagation of incision upstream. Overall, the net changes from the UAV survey pointed to 22 759 m3 of gravel sediments, constituting outwash from the 1.6 km long channel system (2015–2022) by incision, whereas analyses of historical channel surfaces estimated erosion of 573 303 m3 from impacted reaches between 1949 and 2020. Incision evidence is only observed in the downstream part below the control section due to local drivers (channel regulation, comprising embankment and gravel mining that activated a backward erosion of the system with knickpoint migration upstream). This analysis shows the benefits of combining different sources of data to separate long‐term and ongoing channel responses and the BACI‐approach to better target cause–effect relationships in space and time. Microplastics, plastic particles smaller than 5 mm, pose a significant environmental threat due to their persistence and distribution in aquatic ecosystems. Research on the dynamics of microplastics within freshwater systems, particularly concerning their transport and deposition along river corridors, remains insufficient. This study investigated the occurrence and deposition of microplastics at the water–sediment interface of the White River near Muncie, Indiana. Sediment samples were collected from three sites: White River Woods (upstream), Westside Park (midstream), and Morrow's Meadow (downstream). The microplastic concentrations varied significantly, with the highest concentration recorded upstream, indicating a strong influence from agricultural runoff. The types of microplastics identified were predominantly fragments (43.1%), fibers (29.6%), and films (27.3%), with fragments being consistently the most abundant at all sampling sites. A polymer analysis with selected particles using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy revealed that the most common polymers were polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The hydrodynamic conditions played a crucial role in the deposition and transport of microplastics. The statistical analysis demonstrated a strong positive correlation between the microplastic concentration and flow velocity at the downstream site, suggesting that lower flow velocities contribute to the accumulation of finer sediments and microplastics. Conversely, the upstream and midstream sites exhibited weaker correlations, indicating that other environmental and anthropogenic factors, such as land use and the sediment texture, may influence microplastic retention and transport. This study provides valuable insights into the complex interactions between river dynamics, sediment characteristics, and microplastic deposition in freshwater systems. These findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge on freshwater microplastic pollution and can help guide mitigation strategies aimed at reducing microplastic contamination in riverine ecosystems. Despite the fact that the first red tide reported on the coasts of the Iberian Peninsula was due to Lingulodinium polyedra, knowledge about their frequency and, particularly, about the environmental conditions contributing to bloom initiation is still scarce. For this reason, L. polyedra bloom episodes were observed and studied in three Galician rias during the summer season based on the 1993–2008 record database period; additionally, samples were collected in summer 2008. Proliferations of L. polyedra occurred in the rias of Ares and Barqueiro in June and August, respectively, while in the Ria of Coruña, they persisted from the end of June to early September. Red tides developed when the surface temperature reached 17 °C, with "seasonal thermal window" conditions, and when salinities were ≥30, i.e., an "optimal salinity window"; when these parameters were lower than these thresholds, cyst germination decreased. A cyst transport mechanism from sediments to the surface must also exist; this mechanism was found to be natural (tidal currents) in the ria of Barqueiro or anthropogenic (dredging) in the rias of Ares and Coruña. Surface temperatures during summer were usually favorable for cyst germination (85 to 100%) during the 1993–2008 period; however, water temperatures below 10 m depth only rarely reached the 17 °C threshold (2 to 18%). During this 16-year period, dredging activities could explain 71% (Coruña) and 44% (Ares) of the recorded bloom events. When a bloom episode developed in early summer, favorable conditions did not lead to a new red tide, probably due to the lag period required by cysts for germination. Moreover, blooms did not develop when high densities of diatoms (>1,000,000 cells·L−1) remained in the water column as a result of summer upwelling pulses occurring in specific years. The temperature–sediment disturbance pattern found in this study provides a useful tool for the prevention of eventual risks resulting from red tides of this dinoflagellate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reconstructing Holocene vegetation history and human impact on vegetation is critical for understanding past interactions between humans and nature. This study concentrates on the lower West River area in Southern China, offering high-resolution reconstructions of vegetation changes over the last 9000 years. Our findings reveal that during the Holocene Climatic Optimum (9–5 ka BP), the area was predominantly covered by dense evergreen broad-leaved forests. Around 5.1 ka BP, the emergence of marsh forests, as evidenced by abundant pollen of Glyptostrobus and in situ buried woods and roots, indicated a transition towards a wetland ecosystem. Notably, a thriving wetland environment and high production of peat deposits dating from 4.3 ka to 2.5 ka BP reflect the continuous drop of lake levels and the formation of swamps driven by a climatic pattern marked by decreased precipitation, potentially linked to a reduction in summer monsoon intensity during the latter part of the Holocene. This period of wetland expansion also coincides with the earliest evidence of rice cultivation in Southern China, suggesting a relationship between agricultural development and regional landscape changes. Additionally, millennial-scale paleo-megafloods are not only identified by lithological features but also by pollen taxa and principal component analysis. Despite the temporary disruptions of the marsh forest, it demonstrated resilience, quickly recovering within decades. By approximately 2.5 ka BP, a significant increase in rice-type Poaceae pollen and Pteridophyte spores, alongside the sharp decline of Glyptostrobus and a decrease in arboreal taxa, were observed. This shift in pollen spectra, coupled with a PC1 curve of principal component analysis, points to intensified human activity as a primary driver behind the collapse of the local wetland ecosystem. These findings align with regional evidence from the Pearl River Delta and coastal Southern China, highlighting extensive human intervention in natural forests and the onset of large-scale agriculture post-2.5 ka BP. In the Anthropocene, the significant and pervasive human impact on Earth's ecosystems is manifested in myriad ways, with the ever-increasing presence of plastic pollution being a prime example. This paper presents a comprehensive exploration of the ubiquitous problem of marine plastic pollution in the Anthropocene, providing a vital lexicon for all stakeholders. This linguistic toolkit enables effective communication and mutual understanding among scientists, policymakers, activists, and the general public, fostering tailored and targeted approaches to address the various facets of plastic pollution. It further underscores the profound human impact on the environment to the extent that our plastic litter might symbolize the inception of a new geological epoch. However, these classifications, while mirroring our role in shaping the Earth, do not mitigate the urgent need to address plastic pollution. Rather, they serve as an urgent call to action, emphasizing the power we possess to solve the problem we have created. As we traverse this era full with plastic, our responsibility is to leverage this lexicon not only to comprehend the extent of the damage caused but also to ignite innovative solutions and foster resilience. Regardless of the nomenclature assigned to our era, our duty to safeguard the planet remains paramount. The main objective of this study was to examine the spatial distribution patterns of aquatic invertebrates in an environment characterized by significant anthropogenic stress. During the entire research period, at all the sites, we noticed 72 taxa of zooplankton and 30 taxa of macroinvertebrates. Variation partitioning analysis reveals that the assemblages of planktonic organisms are much more determined by the time of sampling rather than by the site, in contrary to macroinvertebrates where the sampling time was only slightly more responsible for the composition of the benthic communities than the site. Spatial distribution of aquatic organisms in a small lowland river under strong anthropopressure shows significant deviations from the expectations of the River Continuum Concept (RCC). The benthic macroinvertebrate and littoral zooplankton communities exhibited a strong association with local site conditions, while, in contrast, pelagic zooplankton exhibited a strong dependency on drift and its production in the upper reaches of the river, leading to relatively consistent compositions downstream despite the highly altered river environment.
