The article focuses on various methods of news reporting in China. To report the vast area of China, with nearly a quarter of the world's population, only a few correspondents of foreign news agencies and newspapers were regularly stationed there. The larger American news agencies, and a few American daily news-papers, stationed foreign correspondents in Shanghai, China, which became news center for all of continental Asia. When Sino-Japanese War broke out anew in July 1937, Americans had only a handful of correspondents in the Orient. Conditions of work of foreign correspondents in China and those in Europe are radically different. In China, the foreigner meets a strange language, which often remains a mystery to him for life. To get news to cable home, these correspondents are forced to tap the following poisoned springs of misinformation. Natives are employed to read, translate and digest the local China press.

The article focuses on historical materials on a model capitalist industry in Shanghai, China. On the establishment of the Shanghai Tobacco Workers' Union, the workers seized the opportunity to make various demands for an improvement in their livelihood. The capitalists at first tried to suppress the workers, but after realizing that the workers were united as one, all members of the administrative staff were in fact admitted to the Association, in which senior members of the staff were in complete control of its most powerful organ. The workers launched a full-scale attack and the entire committee was forced to resign. Most of the new committee members elected were workers and it was only then that the Association became exclusively a trade union of the workers. The total number of male and female workers on the day and night shifts of the South Seas Brothers Tobacco Company is over six thousand, and they feel that maintaining their livelihood has been difficult over the past year. The workers have made a total of seventeen demands, but there are no details on all of them.

The article focuses on the attitudes toward German, Austrian and Polish refugees who escaped the Nazi terror to the International Settlement in Shanghai, China, from 1938 to 1939. As the number of refugees approached 1,500 by December 1938, and the tempo of their arrival increased almost daily, all residents of the settlement, including the Jews, feared that this influx can not be absorbed. Objections to the refugees are manifested in different ways, most of which can be traced to the overriding fear of economic competition and the severe housing shortage in Shanghai. The attitude of the Jews of Shanghai, as well as of other parts of the world, helped shape the generally negative reactions toward the refugees.

Since 1933 silver clauses, defining the Chinese dollar and providing for optional re-payment in bar silver or in equivalent value in legal tender currency, have appeared in debentures issued by foreign and by sonic Chinese borrowers in Shanghai. After China went off the silver standard in November, 1935, debenture-holders of at least two companies agreed to accept legal tender bank notes for December 31 interest. The subsequent fall in the price of silver reduced the margin between silver and notes and made the question less important. No case apparently has been taken to court as yet; the legal questions are complicated by the extraterritorial status of many of the borrowers. Whether any cases are brought to court probably will depend upon whether the margin between silver and notes becomes so large as to cause serious inequity to the debenture-holders. This article examines the certain "laws" of migration in the light of some principles of migration applied to American migrants to Shanghai, China. There are some types of migration in which there is no possibility of the approach being a gradual one. The leap from Europe or America to China is a long one. A great seaport of a widely divergent culture presents to alien migrants a situation almost wholly novel to which they are forced to adapt themselves, or return home, or perish. Shanghai has also been the starting point for many groups of Chinese students who have gone abroad to study. The exclusion law of the U.S. is a factor strongly inhibiting a greater countercurrent of migration out of the Oriental seaport, Shanghai in recent years. It has been seen that, the Chinese who have gone from Shanghai to the U.S. have done so because aliens have entered the city and displaced the natives. As for the Americans who migrate to Shanghai and then return to their homeland, there is a selective process going on. It is unlikely that many Americans, turning their backs upon the U.S., go to Shanghai determined to make it their adopted home and China their country.

This article addresses the condition of workers living in slums found in factory districts in Shanghai, China. What complicates the problem is the large labor surplus in the city. With more workers than there is work to be done, the struggle for existence is so severe that there are people who will offer themselves for any wage. Five grades or classes of housing facilities are available for the working classes. The better grade of workers' homes consists of two-storied tenements built in long terraces and separated by narrow passages. The second grade of house also consists of tenements built close together in long rows and separated by a narrow passage, but flimsier in construction and without a second story. Another grade of housing facilities for laborers consists of dormitories operated by private individuals for profit who rent spaces to men without families. Another grade of living quarters consists of houses and dormitories built by industries for the use of their own employees. The worst grade of living quarters consists of mud huts which afford shelter for a large number of the poorest people in the city. A typical hut is constructed of bamboo poles, having walls covered with matting and mud and the roof with straw.
