This article explores the relationship between education and earnings. It is informed that a recent study by Herman P. Miller indicates that the lifetime income of a college man over one who merely finishes high school may be expected to average $177,00. Many have argued that because of the market value of a college education it is sound economics to have the student pay at least a substantial part of the cost of such education. To investigate the earnings of individuals with comparable education through high school but with varying post-secondary education, questionnaires were sent to individuals who had graduated from high schools in New Hampshire cities in 1938 or 1939. These schools were selected because their graduates came from relatively uniform communities-- small industrial cities in an industrialized state with no dominant metropolitan center. Seven high schools were able to furnish useful lists of present addresses of either 1938 or 1939 graduates. In reporting earnings respondents were instructed to report wages, commissions, tips, profits from businesses, etc., and to omit income from investments.
