This article describes the recent production of a five-year plan for social welfare development in Hong Kong. The fact that the Government accepts the main responsibility for social welfare services does not mean that there is no longer such a need for a voluntary sector. On the contrary, it seems clear that there will continue to be an important role for vigorous and progressive voluntary sector in the provision of social welfare services in Hong Kong. The very fact of planning jointly with the voluntary sectors meant that there was a second opinion as to the needs of social welfare and their relative urgency.

The section of "Yarn Production and Properties" focuses on the progress of technologies in the field of yarn production. It is stated that a steady progress has been seen recently in traditional methods of yarn production, the large-scale establishment of new areas of technology, and the prospect of commercial exploitation of even newer concepts within the not too distant future. It is also reported that the pace of technological developments was described in a recent paper presented to the Overseas Conference of the Textile Institute in Hong Kong, China in November, 1973.

Forty five cases of systemic lupus erythematosus in Hong Kong are reviewed. Of common occurrence were hyperkeratotic follicular papules, which in some cases resembled pityriasis rubra pilaris and keratosis pilans, hyper-keratosis of the palms and soles, and psoriasiform lesions. Less frequent cutaneous manifestations included chilblains, livedo reticularis, and scleroderrna-like changes. Biological false positive serological tests for syphilis were not encountered. Public accountancy in Hong Kong may be divided into three major parts, auditing, taxation and costing. Costing is a special feature of public accountancy in Hong Kong. It is associated with exports under the Commonwealth Preference scheme. Auditing in Hong Kong may be either compulsory or voluntary. The proper title of a public accountant engaged in company auditing is the "authorized auditor," an official list is kept by the companies' registry and published yearly in the government's December gazette. The official accounting body in Hong Kong is the Authorized Auditors Board. The application of statistical techniques, sampling, probability control, etc., to auditing has not received enough attention, but the popular method of direct confirmation used in the United States is also widely accepted in Hong Kong. Income tax supplies the largest portion of the total Hong Kong revenue, although the rate is quite low. The standard rate of tax is now 12.5%, a rate unchanged since 1951. Profits tax is charged on every individual, partnership or corporation carrying on business in Hong Kong.

This article focuses on the personality structure of Chinese college students in Taiwan and Hong Kong, China. It is generally recognized that the social environment in which a person lives usually imposes on him certain awarenesses that may influence or alter his values, beliefs, attitudes toward self and others, or his style of life. The present paper reports the use of the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire in a study of a sample of Chinese college students in two different educational and social environments--specifically, in a study of personality differences between Taiwan and Hong Kong college students. The Taiwan subjects included 159 males and 139 females enrolled at Taiwan Provincial Normal University, while the Hong Kong subjects were 93 males and 165 females attending Chu-hai College, Kowloon. The translated items were again rechecked and modified by the consensus of several Chinese social scientists. Within the female group, eight of the personality differences exceeded the 0.05 level of significance, while five of the male personality comparisons exceeded the 0 .05 level.

The article relates the author's experiences during his visit to Hong Kong and Japan in the winter of 1974. He compared Hong Kong with the city of San Francisco in California with its blend of ocean, bay and hills. He observed that there is very little poverty in the city. He also toured tourist destinations in Kyoto, Japan.

The article focuses on the research paper "Asymptomatic Neurosyphilis in Hong Kong," by G.M. Thomson which was published in a 1955 issue of the "British Journal of Venereal Diseases." This paper describes the selection of the cases, the tests used, and the results of an examination of the cerebrospinal fluid in 1821 cases of latent syphilis. The incidence of asymptomatic neurosyphilis is also given.

TABRAP (TArget Birth Rate Acceptor Program) is a computer programmed model that provides a direct solution to the problem of determining the total annual numbers of contraceptive acceptors required to achieve a prescribed crude birth rate target path. Applied to an initial population for which age structure, the fertility schedule, and expected trends in life expectancy and age-specific proportions of females married are known, TABRAP incorporates the following factors: age at acceptance, with acceptors drawn from currently married nonusers; age-method-specific attrition rates of users; a potential fertility schedule of acceptors that allows for aging and sterility; and allowance both for postpartum anovulation and nine months for gestation to time properly the averted births. TABRAP generates annual data on acceptors, couple-years of use, births averted and age-specific fertility rates that meet the crude birth rate target. Resulting changes in population size, age structure and crude vital rates, also yielded, are invariant with respect to acceptor age and method mix. Assuming a target to reduce the crude birth rate from 45 to 30 in ten years, TABRAP is illustrated for seven mixes of acceptor age-method combinations applied to a population approximately that of Thailand, circa 1965. Phytoplankton counts and chemical/physical analyses were carried out twice weekly for 2² years on samples taken from Plover Cove Reservoir, and a description of the variations in species composition and abundance is followed by an analysis of the effects of these environmental factors on algal growth, and their correlation with phytoplankton abundance. In addition, 24-h surveys were carried out over a 1-year period in an attempt to evaluate the seasonal, diurnal and vertical distribution patterns of the more abundant phytoplankters. Blue-green algal blooms were greatest in winter 1967⁄68 and in autumn 1969; shoreline-attached diatoms were prevalent in winter 1968⁄69 and winter 1969⁄70. The blue-green algal blooms have been attributed to a high rate of phosphorus and nitrogen supply, and the occurrence of diatoms at such specific times to an increase in light penetration due to the paucity of phytoplankton at these times. Various well-marked distribution patterns were seen, and the seasonal pattern in the case of Microcystis aeruginosa was shown to be closely correlated with fluctuations in certain chemical parameters, namely, ammonia-N, nitrate-N and phosphate concentrations. A sample of 1123 young people in Hong Kong were interviewed and responded to a number of statements concerning family norms. The data suggest that with regard to relationships between husband and wife, and parents and children, views are more consonant with the norms of the Western conjugal family than the traditional Chinese family. A pattern consonant with traditional norms is found concerning relationships with the older generation and a substantial minority support the notion of extended family living. An abstract of the article "Abnormal Homicide in Hong Kong," by M. Wong and K. Singer is presented. The paper reports on a complete sample of 41 abnormal murders that occurred in Hong Kong, China from 1961 to 1971. Abnormal murder shows the preponderance of schizophrenics, the higher proportion of female offenders and the abnormal female offender whose victims are infants or children.

A distinctive strain of Trichophyton rubrum has been isolated from 5 patients in Hong Kong. The infections caused by this strain were clinically more inflammatory and responded more rapidly to treatment than infections with the ordinary form of T. rubrum. The mycological characteristics of the Hong Kong strain are described in detail. It is possible that the Hong Kong and the Nigerian strains of T. rubrum are identical. A cross-cultural comparison was made between Dogmatism scores of British and Hong Kong Chinese students. The mean D score of Hong Kong subjects was significantly higher than the mean score of British subjects. It is suggested that Hong Kong subjects may be more closed-minded than British subjects, or they may be more acquiescent. For Chinese-English bilingual subjects the mean score on a Chinese translation of the D scale was significantly higher than the mean score on the English language scale. This last finding is considered to have important implications for cross-cultural measurement using verbal instruments, and it may also be relevant to studies in linguistic relativity. The article presents an evaluation of occupations by English speaking refugee and local Hong Kong adolescents. The respondents are 16 to 17 years of age in the tenth and twelfth grades of three high schools in Hong Kong. The occupations, though not identical, do possess persuasively parallel components such as demanding skill requirements, remunerations and training required. The hypothesis includes the notion that elements of socio-economic status from prior occupations are being carried over into the new cultural setting, a fact that would contribute to the increased achievement motivation. The results show that the motivational components of occupational and family role units are somewhat homologous. Occupations normally are oriented towards instrumental, universal and effectively neutral characteristics. Heightened emphasis of familialism may tend to prevent the segregation of family roles from occupational roles thus making the social emotional patterns sufficient for both spheres.

Hypothetical calculations reveal that Hong Kong's fertility would have declined somewhat even without the availability of I.U.D.'s. Time series analysis of the crude birth rate shows that Hong Kong's fertility decline is mirrored by movements in educational opportunities for children and employment opportunities for women. This simple model is not appreciably improved by inclusion of a measure of family-planning activities. These calculations suggest, although they by no means prove, that (a) socio-economic variables were an important source of Hong Kong's fertility decline and (b) rather less weight than was previously thought can be attributed to the causal efficacy of family planning intervention. There is no question that the Hong Kong Family Planning Association was instrumental in meeting a substantial demand for fertility control. To what extent family-planning activities were also responsible for the creation of that demand, of which the rise is demonstrably associated with socio-economic changes, is an open question. This article presents a study, which highlights educational experience, deemed as an influence on modern and traditional attitudes. The evidence is taken from Hong Kong, China to prove the hypothesis of the above study. A recurrent theme in studies of developing countries stresses the "modernizing" influence of an experience of formal education. It was hypothesized that the different educational experiences of young people in Hong Kong would be associated with patterns of response to 11 statements reflecting "modern" and "traditional" attitudes. It was hypothesized that "modern" responses to the 11 attitude statements would be associated with particular educational experiences, as follows: (a) young people with some experience of secondary education would be relatively "modern" compared with those without secondary education; (b) young people with some experience of higher education would be relatively "modern" compared with those without higher education; and (c) young people with an education exclusively in Anglo-Chinese schools would be relatively "modern" compared with those with an education exclusively in Chinese schools.
