The incidence of PKU in British Columbia in the 1950-1971 period is 1/18,750 which corresponds to that found in two other Canadian studies.(2, 3) Evidence is presented which shows a trend toward a decline in incidence; however, this is not statistically significant. There is a preponderance of male cases in all age groups.

The 1960's saw the introduction of simulation techniques into the area of urban and regional planning. The present paper describes a large-scale urban simulation effort currently underway in Vancouver, British Columbia. The project differs from similar work in a number of ways. Most notably, the current effort stresses the process of model-building, including the widespread public use and discussion of the work and its limitations. The paper emphasizes this process orientation, and illustrates the content of of the models with a detailed description of the economic submodel. This submodel combines input-output analysis with a simulation model of final demands to yield consistent economic forecasts for the region. Capsule summaries of the other submodels are also presented. The paper concludes with a focus on questions of use and misuse of simulation models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes an integer LP model that was used as an aid in the design of tank trucks to be operated in British Columbia. The B.C. axle loading legislation (as of June 1973) has been incorporated into this model. The decisions made by the model are the lengths of the interaxte spacings and the load for each axle. Plans to raise the Ross Dam on the Skagit River by the American utility, City Light, will flood a valley in Canada and have generated a conflict of resource use between conservationists and proponents of economic progress. This paper examines the variety of uses of the valley at present, and their expansion for recreational use by modest improvements. Such expanded use is compared with uses available if the valley is flooded. The comparison is expressed in economic terms. The paper then continues with a critique of economic analysis to such problems of resource allocation and develops an approach to ecological resource allocation. A schedule and analysis of alternative uses is offered. The economic and ecological conclusions are examined, and it is found that the latter method is more appropriate to practical problems of allocation, at least with regard to natural resources than the former.. In this paper a probabilistic branch and bound procedure is developed for the ambulance location problem. Information on system characteristics under various ambulance assignments and dispatch rules was provided by a digital simulation. The output of the simulation was also used to construct the objective function for the optimal location problem. The procedure was used to determine ambulance locations in Vancouver, Canada. It has become widely accepted by those working in the sociology of science that one of the most significant social processes within the scientific communities the exchange of information for professional recognition. Professional recognition is valued by scientists, not only because it is experienced as gratifying in itself, but also because it makes more accessible a variety of associated rewards such as research funds, promotion, salary increases and so on. Professional recognition, however, depends on research publication. Thus, the professional career of research scientists centres around the exchange of information for recognition. In the present article, the physics department at a new Canadian university is studied with special reference to this exchange process and to the manner in which the reward system of the scientific profession structures activities within the department. The first section of this article examines how the policy of the government-sponsored National Research Council combine with norms of independence within the department to enable the physicists at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia to pursue their individual research interests.

Oral tradition states that the first Chinese cemetery in Victoria, Canada, was possibly west of Swan Lake, but its precise location and history are unknown. The application of an ideal Feng Shui topographic model and the use of aerial photographs, cadastral and topographic maps, material in Chinese archives, and records of the Land Registry Office, show that the Chinese Association in Victoria purchased a plot of land north of Swan Lake in 1891. Examines the sensitivity of the regional economy of British Columbia to that of the average Canadian experience over the period 1919-1939. The article examines the classification of plant communities with the use of an agglomerative method. An agglomerative clustering method is outlined in the study while its application is illustrated by reference to a classification of flood-plain communities. Agglomeration is carried out in successive cycles. The within-group sum of squares is minimized and the group differences are maximized at each clustering cycle. The process causes the construction of a hierarchy of dichotomous branching. Two hierarchies are presented based on separate analyses of absolute distance and standard distance with the use of previous study of plant communities in British Columbia. The results points out that the structure imposed on the sample is distance measure-dependent.

The article discusses the distribution of algae and aquatic animals on rocky shores between tide-marks at four points in southeastern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, and compares this to the detailed account of Brandon Island. It also presents a comparison of zonation in Vancouver Island and Brandon Island. It is determined that winter ice is occasional and the salinity varies in some parts of Vancouver Island. Large species of both plants and animals, specifically echinoderms are frequently seen in the region.

This study (1970ı71) of an oligotrophic lake subject to cultural enrichment indicates the presence of complex interrelations between plankton and nitrogen levels in surface waters. Generally inorganic nitrogen was high in the winter (0.4–0.5 ppm) and low in summer (less than 0.1 ppm). However, in late July and August a large increase in nitrogen (1.5 ppm) was recorded. This correlated with the Gloeotrichia echinulata J. E. Smith ex P. Richt. bloom (Cyanophyceae) and the increase in nitrogen fixation, or nitrogenase activity (measured as acetylene reduction). It was calculated that the cyanophyte bloom could have contributed a minimum of 2350 kg nitrogen to the lake in August 1970 which is c. 62 % of the nitrate-nitrogen occurring at any time. This paper describes part of an education experiment at the University of British Columbia at Vancouver.Six final-year medical students spent approximately 12 weeks in a community. Their time was divided between the hospital and various doctors' offices. They answered a simple questionnaire to describe their experiences and commented favourably upon the opportunities for direct patient contact, learning basic skills, informal teaching by both family physicians and consultants, and the variety of work available.They had the opportunity to follow up the progress of the patient and learn the natural history of common illnesses. They achieved their basic objectives. We conclude from their reports and informal conversation that the experiment was successful and recommend other institutions to try similar programs.
