The article provides information on the collection of the resources for labor history in the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. The resources gathered are the result of the first attempt to document the rise of industrial democracy in the U.S. The plan of labor historian and economist Richard T. Ely to write a comprehensive history of industrial society was thwarted by scattered and inaccessible source materials. Due to that problem, Ely collected documents on the labor movement even after he joined the University of Wisconsin faculty in 1892.

The article reports that the private papers of William Jennings Bryan will be placed for perpetual custody in the archives of the Manuscripts Division of the U.S. Library of Congress starting in 1925. In effect, the papers will be accessible to responsible historical scholars in the country. These papers contain political and international events of more than thirty-five years of American history.

The article focuses on National Archives publications. The most recent and in many ways the most important addition includes two volumes entitled Federal Records of World War II. Volume I dealing with Civilian Agencies contains 1073 pages; Volume II, Military Agencies, 1061 pages. Of particular interest to those interested in preparing or acquiring archival material in facsimile are two publications. One of the "The Preparation of Records for Publication on Microfilm," number 19 of the series of Staff Information Papers, will be found of particular value to those considering large microfilm projects.

The article discusses archival materials on microcards. Very soon after his book. "The Scholar and the Future of the Research Library," was published the writer began to get letters, not only from libraries but also from banks, insurance companies, college registrars, motor vehicle registration bureaus, and the like, expressing interest in the new microcard technique which it proposed, and asking whether this technique was not one that could be made applicable to their own specialized recording and filing problems. In the five years since, this sort of correspondence has so grown in volume as to become a real burden, and this little article was written as an attempt to formulate a general answer to the basic questions involved.

The article reports that documents in the French national archives, dated through the year 1919, are now open to the public. The principal exceptions to the new regulation are documents restricted by the depositing ministry at the time of deposit and confidential papers concerning public figures who are still living.

This section describes all the manuscripts present at the Hermann Broch Archive, Yale University Library, Connecticut, as of September 1, 1972. The Hermann Broch Archive came to Yale University in July, 1951, in accordance with Broch's wishes and through the executor of his estate, Henry Seidel Canby. The core collection consisted of all the papers that were in Broch's possession at the time of his death in 1951. The manuscripts listed here were catalogued for the library' several years ago by Hedwig S. Dejon; the present descriptions, though somewhat modified, are heavily dependent on Dejon's work.

Symbiont is a computer-and-program system for use in research on computer-aided study. It stores, retrieves, and displays documents and parts of documents. It "semi-automates" the taking of verbatim notes. It facilitates the manipulation and intercomparison of graphs. And it conducts searches for passages of text that contain specified words or phrases. The article presents editor's invitation to the readers to send their manuscripts to the journal "Sociological Focus" for possible publication.

This article presents a report of the editor of Sociometry, a scholarly journal published by the American Sociological Association, as of August 1972. The journal received 245 new submissions from May 1, 1971 to May 1, 1972. This is approximately the same as far as for 1969-1970 and 49 more than for 1970-1971. Rejection rate has remained constant at ninety percent of which ten percent of submissions are returned without review because in the editor's opinion they are insufficiently germaine to current research and theories in social psychology to warrant publication. The remaining are rejected after consideration by at least two readers. In this connection we have continued our policy of referring methodological articles of interest to the general profession to Sociological Methodology. Since each manuscript accepted for review is sent to two editorial readers for evaluation, we have been curious about the extent to which referees agree in their recommendations. This year I had an opportunity to make a study of agreement between the recommendations of reviewer. Based on 425 submissions read by two readers, we found that in approximately forty percent of the cases there was complete agreement on ratings made on a five-point scale with an additional third of our readers disagreeing by only one scale point. For about ten percent of the manuscripts, there was more pronounced disagreement with the ratings by our two readers differing by three or more points.

The article reports that the intention of editing this symposium issue on "The Methodology of Policy Studies," in the December 12, 1973 issue of the "Policy Studies Journal." The intension of editors was to organize manuscripts around the key questions which invariably confront the policy researcher pursuing the investigation of public policy. The article also mentions several questions dealing with the conceptual work within which the research is located, and the selection and measurement of relevant variables.

A proposal to share experiences with the editing process for contributors to the periodical "Sociological Quarterly" to better understand how manuscripts are handled and evaluated. A percentage of manuscripts were returned to the contributors without being sent to reviewers. Manuscripts which fail the initial minimal editorial review are written by non-sociologists. The material would not be of interest to an audience of sociologists. The professional training of contributors is not a criterion of acceptability of manuscripts, but the intent to address important issues in sociology.

The article focuses on the publications of results of the universities in the U.S. The article adds that it is expected that the results of research conducted under such a plan will result in material worthy of publication and estimated to be of permanent value. Alongside, therefore, the organization and direction of the research assistants provision for the publication of results will constitute a task second only in importance to the first. Such publication may be done in several forms. The learned journals in the several fields are open for special data of value. In this particular instance The Journal of Social Forces is available whenever material from the Institute is as good or better than that submitted from other sources. The University of North Carolina Press has provision for publishing a limited number of monographs and volumes and should increase its revolving fund for publication of manuscripts too expensive and too plainly scientific for the general publisher. Alongside the task of publishing results the Press and Library working together will be enabled to find valuable source material and to provide working abstracts of literature for the student at work.

The article presents a report of the editor of the "American Sociological Review," a research journal published by the American Sociological Association (ASA), on the manuscripts published by the journal. The author presents a table of manuscripts received and published between 1968 and 1971. The table clearly mentions that, for the year 1970-71, the journal received 488 manuscripts in total. Out of these 488 items, 454 were published, which included 49 research articles, 375 book reviews, 2 symposium reviews, 4 review essays and 4 continuities. The author further informs that, over the three-year period, the number of manuscripts submitted has increased by 92, or roughly 25 percent. This increase reflects the growth of research sociology and the expectation of its practitioners that their findings will be placed in the literature. At the same time, the author notes that the journal has been criticized for spending too much lime on matters of style, including references and the like, on the grounds that good form is of only incidental importance.
