The present study is an attempt to identify the main sources of growth of five selected Indian industries, viz. Cotton Textile, Jute Textile, Sugar, Paper (including paper board) and Bicycle. The investigation is carried out by estimating production functions of the Cobb-Douglas form by utilizing time series of cross-section data for the industries under study. The estimates of the elasticities of output with respect to various inputs, returns to scale and 'technical progress' provide the basis for drawing inferences regarding the nature of the growth of the industries. The data and the variables used in the study are discussed in Section 1. Section 2 provides a brief discussion of the methodology. The results of the investigation are presented in Section 3.
