Tornadoes, as highly destructive weather events, require accurate detection for effective decision‐making. Traditional radar‐based tornado detection algorithms (TDA) face challenges with limited tornado feature extraction capabilities, leading to high false alarm rates and low detection probabilities. This study introduces the Multi‐Task Identification Network (MTI‐Net), leveraging Doppler radar data to enhance tornado recognition. MTI‐Net integrates tornado detection and estimation tasks to acquire comprehensive spatial and locational information. As part of MTI‐Net, we introduce a novel backbone network of Multi‐Head Convolutional Block (MHCB), which incorporates Spatial and Channel Attention Units (SAU and CAU). SAU optimizes local tornado feature extraction, while CAU reduces false alarms by enhancing dependencies among input variables. Experiments demonstrate the superiority of MTI‐Net over TDA, with a decrease in false alarm rates from 0.94 to 0.46 and an increase in hit rates from 0.23 to 0.81, highlighting the effectiveness of MTI‐Net in handling small‐scale tornado events. Previous theoretical simulations showed the generation of double‐layer structures of E‐region field‐aligned irregularities (FAIs). In this study, we report the double‐layer structures of E‐region FAIs observed by an all‐sky radar at low latitude Ledong (18.4°N, 109°E), China. These FAIs appeared at the altitudes ∼90 and 110 km respectively. Both layers displayed quasi‐periodic patterns with synchronized spatial features, that is, being manifested as spatially separated patches or wavelike structures over similar longitudes at the two layers simultaneously. The neutral wind observations revealed the existence of wind shears at two separated altitudes where the double FAI layers occurred. The two wind shears created two vertically separated sporadic E layers and possibly drove the generation of the double‐layer FAIs via gradient drift instability. The synchronized spatial features of the FAIs at the two layers could be modulated by gravity waves. Due to the limited field of view of narrow‐beam radars which were traditionally employed for observing ionospheric irregularity, the spatial morphology and evolution of E‐region FAIs in a small region were resolved. Owing to the recently developed capability of all‐sky radars in observing E‐region irregularities, the spatial features of E‐region irregularities over a larger zonal region up to hundreds of kilometers in the horizontal plane can be derived. Further, the spatial features of E‐region irregularities in the vertical direction can be unambiguously determined. Utilizing an all‐sky radar at low latitude Ledong, China, a case of double‐layer structures of E‐region FAIs, which occurred at ∼90 and 110 km altitudes respectively, was observed. The double layers of FAIs spanned a zonal coverage ∼250 km, showing as synchronized spatially separated quasi‐periodic patches or wavelike structures in two layers. Especially, the wavelike structures synchronized in the two layers could provide solid evidence for the crucial role of gravity waves in modulating E‐region irregularities. In combination with the collocated ionosonde Es and neutral wind observations, the physical mechanisms responsible for the generation of the double‐layer E‐region FAIs were discussed. A new dual-frequency stratospheric–tropospheric (ST) and meteor radar has been built and installed at the Langfang Observatory in northern China. It utilizes a new two-frequency system design that allows interleaved operation at 53.8 MHz for ST mode and at 35.0 MHz for meteor mode, thus optimizing performance for both ST wind retrieval and meteor trail detection. In dedicated meteor mode, the daily meteor count rate reaches over 40 000 and allows wind estimation at finer time resolutions than the 1 h typical of most meteor radars. The root mean square uncertainty of the ST wind measurements is better than 2 m s -1 when estimating the line of best fit with radiosonde winds. Preliminary observation results for 1 month of winter gravity wave (GW) momentum fluxes in the mesosphere, lower stratosphere and troposphere are also presented. Quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) by radar observation data is a crucial aspect of meteorological forecasting operations. Accurate QPE plays a significant role in mitigating the impact of severe convective weather. Traditional QPE methods mainly employ an exponential Z–R relationship to map the radar reflectivity to precipitation intensity on a point-to-point basis. However, this isolated point-to-point transformation lacks an effective representation of convective systems. Deep learning-based methods can learn the evolution patterns of convective systems from rich historical data. However, current models often rely on 2 km-height CAPPI images, which struggle to capture the complex vertical motions within convective systems. To address this, we propose a novel QPE model: combining the classic extrapolation model ConvLSTM with Unet for an encoder-decoder module assembly. Meanwhile, we utilize three-dimensional radar echo images as inputs and introduce the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) to guide the model to focus on individual cells most likely to trigger intense precipitation, which is symmetrically built on both channel and spatial attention modules. We also employ asymmetry in training using weighted mean squared error to make the model concentrate more on heavy precipitation events which are prone to severe disasters. We conduct experiments using radar data from North China and Eastern China. For precipitation above 1 mm, the proposed model achieves 0.6769 and 0.7910 for CSI and HSS, respectively. The results indicate that compared to other methods, our model significantly enhances precipitation prediction accuracy, with a more pronounced improvement in forecasting accuracy for heavy precipitation events. The proposed "Guanlan" ocean science satellite, led by China's Laoshan Laboratory, includes an interferometric radar altimeter (IRA) as a key payload. As an integral part of its development, an airborne IRA experiment was conducted on 6 November 2021, with a flight path of approximately 90 km in the South China Sea. This study investigates the IRA's ability to observe ocean sea surface height (SSH) across scales ranging from meters to mesoscale. The sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) of the IRA is aligned with the SSHA of the AVISO at scales greater than 30 km, but also demonstrates the ability to capture small-scale SSHA changes in two dimensions. We analyzed wavenumber spectra of SSHA obtained from the airborne IRA, ICESat-2, and SARAL/AltiKa satellite for this region. The results show a good agreement in power spectral density (PSD) levels between ICESat-2, SARAL/AltiKa and IRA at scales larger than 30 km. Within the submesoscale range of 1–10 km, the IRA SSHA spectrum exhibits a distinctly negative slope and the lowest energy level. The minimum PSD level of the IRA fell in the range of 10−4–10−3 m2/cycle/km, at scales around 1 km, which is more than an order of magnitude lower than that of ICESat-2, forming a spectral gap that is in agreement with the theoretical expectation. Furthermore, IRA-derived wave direction and significant wave height matched well with the MFWAM wave data. In this study, we investigate the seasonal and diurnal variations in cloud occurrence frequency, as well as cloud vertical structure (CVS) characteristics under different seasons and precipitation intensities over the Guangzhou region in South China, based on the analysis of millimeter-wave cloud radar (MMCR) and ground automatic weather station rainfall observations from May 2019 to August 2021. The results showed that the occurrence frequency of clouds exhibits a bimodal distribution throughout the year, with peaks in March to June and October, reaching its highest occurrence in May at approximately 80% and its lowest from December to February at around 40%. Additionally, there are distinct diurnal variations in occurrence frequency, with the lowest rates occurring around 0005 LST, rapidly increasing after 0006 LST, and peaking during the afternoon to evening hours. Cloud top height (CTH) shows bimodal distributions during the pre-flood and post-flood seasons. The most frequently occurring range of CTH during the pre-flood season is below 3 km, accounting for approximately 43%, while during the post-flood season, it ranges from 11 to 14 km, constituting about 37%. For precipitation clouds, CTH can extend beyond 12 km, with the radar reflectivity decreasing gradually with increasing height. The highest frequencies of radar echoes are observed below 2 km and between 4 and 7 km, exhibiting clear diurnal variations, with echoes mainly below 2 km and between 4 to 6 km during the early morning, intensifying and shifting to higher altitudes during the day and reaching their maximum below 4 km during the afternoon to nighttime hours, while both the frequency and intensity increase in the height range of 4 to 12 km. Vertical profiles of radar reflectivity and cloud ice/liquid water content (IWC/LWC) exhibit similar trends under different precipitation intensities. The main differences are observed below 4 km, where both radar reflectivity and IWC/LWC generally increase with increasing precipitation intensity. These findings contribute to a better understanding of cloud characteristics in the South China region, enhance the accuracy of model simulations, and provide a scientific basis for accurate forecasting and warning of meteorological disasters. To evaluate the impact of different momentum control variable (CV) schemes (CV5, the momentum control variable option with ψχ and CV7, the momentum control variable option with UV) on radar data assimilation (DA) in weather research and forecasting model data-assimilation (WRFDA) systems, a heavy snowfall in central and eastern regions of China, which started on 6 February 2022, was taken as a case in this study. The results of the wind-field increments from the single observation tests indicated that the wind-field increments had a larger range of influence when stream function and velocity potential (ψχ) were used as momentum control variables in CV5. Some spurious increments were also generated in the wind-field analysis, since CV5 tended to maintain the integrated value of the wind field. When U-wind and V-wind were used as control variables in CV7, the wind-field increments had a smaller impact range, and there was less dependence among different locations on the wind increments. For the heavy snow case, the CV7 schemes displayed some improvements in simulating the composite reflectivity compared to the other two experiments, since the composite reflectivity in the CV5 and control experiments were overestimated to some level. It was also found that the RMSEs were lower in the CV7 compared to those in the CV5 in the short-term forecasts during the data-assimilation cycles. Results also indicated that the CV7 had a more significant effect on the 6 h accumulated precipitation forecasts. Meanwhile, the experiment Exp_CV7 achieved the best ETS and FSS scores among the three groups of experiments, while Exp_CV5 appeared to be generally superior to the CTRL. In summary, the precipitation of Exp_CV7 yielded the rainfall intensity and location most close to the observation compared to those from both the CTRL and Exp_CV5 experiments. Understanding the diurnal variation of horizontal wind in the atmospheric boundary layer is important for weather and climate research and wind energy applications. Here we analyze the hourly data from 91 wind profiler radar sites in China and observe that the power spectral density of horizontal wind in lower troposphere approximately follows the −5/3 power law in the mesoscale range over the ocean and coastal areas. However, in inland areas, the slopes of the power spectra are significantly greater than −5/3. We characterize the temporal and spatial variations of maximum wind speed and low level jets and find that the thermal wind effect may partially contribute to the high percentage of low‐level jets observed in the southeastern coast of China and Hainan Island. While the ERA5 reanalysis reproduces wind spectrum well for time scales >1 day, its spectrum diverges significantly from that of profiler data at shorter time scales. Plain Language Summary: Understanding how the horizontal wind changes throughout the day in the lower part of the atmosphere is important for studying weather and climate and using wind energy. In this study, we looked at data from 91 radar sites in China that measure wind every hour. We found that the pattern of how the wind changes follows a specific mathematical relationship, called a power law, where the wind decreases in a particular way with decreasing spatial and temporal scales. This pattern holds true mostly over the ocean and coastal areas, but in areas further inland, the wind behaves a bit differently. We also studied how the low‐level jet (LLJ), which are fast winds at low altitudes, change over time and space. We discovered that the difference in temperature across the region contributes to the occurrence of these LLJs in coastal areas in southeast China and Hainan Island. Finally, we compare our findings with the ERA5 reanalysis, which demonstrates excellent agreement in reproducing the wind spectrum for time scales greater than 1 day. However, the spectrum derived from the ERA5 reanalysis diverges significantly from the profiler data at shorter time scales. The precipitation types (convective, stratiform, and mixed precipitation) are related to different atmospheric processes. To understand the isotopic characteristics of different types of precipitation, we collected 121 intra-event precipitation samples in Lanzhou of China from June to October 2021. These precipitation events were divided into mixed precipitation and stratiform precipitation using radar images. In the mixed precipitation events, the δ18O values show a similar variation trend. In contrast, the δ18O values of stratiform precipitation events have no coherent trend and are associated to local meteorological factors. The slope and intercept of local meteoric water line indicate that stratiform precipitation is more susceptible to evaporation. Precipitation nowcasting has important implications for urban operation and flood prevention. Radar echo extrapolation is a common method in precipitation nowcasting. Using deep learning models to extrapolate radar echo data has great potential. The increase of lead time leads to a weaker correlation between the real rainfall evolution and the generated images. The evolution information is easily lost during extrapolation, which is reflected as echo attenuation. Existing models, including generative adversarial network (GAN)-based models, have difficulty curbing attenuation, resulting in insufficient accuracy in rainfall prediction. To solve this issue, a spatiotemporal process enhancement network (GAN-argcPredNet v2.0) based on GAN-argcPredNet v1.0 has been designed. GAN-argcPredNet v2.0 curbs attenuation by avoiding blurring or maintaining the intensity. A spatiotemporal image correlation (STIC) prediction network is designed as the generator. By suppressing the blurring effect of rain distribution and reducing the negative bias by STIC attention, the generator generates more accurate images. Furthermore, the discriminator is a channel–spatial (CS) convolution network. The discriminator enhances the discrimination of echo information and provides better guidance to the generator in image generation by CS attention. The experiments are based on the radar dataset of southern China. The results show that GAN-argcPredNet v2.0 performs better than other models. In heavy rainfall prediction, compared with the baseline, the probability of detection (POD), the critical success index (CSI), the Heidke skill score (HSS) and bias score increase by 18.8 %, 17.0 %, 17.2 % and 26.3 %, respectively. This paper comprehensively analyzed two consecutive tornado events associated with heavy precipitation during the Mei-yu season (a period of continuous rainy weather that occurs in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China from mid-June to mid-July each year) and detailed the formation and development process of the tornadoes using Doppler weather radar, wind profiler radar, ERA5 reanalysis data, ground automatic station data and other multi-source data. The results showed that: (1) Small-scale vortices were triggered and developed during the eastward movement of the low vortex, forming two tornadoes successively on the eastern section of the Mei-yu front. (2) The presence of a gap on the front side of the reflectivity factor profile indicated that strong incoming airflow entered the updraft. Mesocyclones were detected with decreasing heights and increasing shear strengths. The bottom height of the tornado vortex signature (TVS) dropped to 0.7 km, and the shear value increased to 55.4 × 10−3 s−1. Tornado debris signatures (TDSs) could be seen with a low cross-correlation coefficient (CC) value area of 0.85–0.9 in the mesocyclone. The difference between the lowest-level difference velocity (LLDV) and the maximum difference velocity (MXDV) reached the largest value when a tornado occurred. (3) The continuously enhanced low-level jet propagated downward to form a super-low-level jet, and the strong wind direction and wind speed convergence in the boundary layer created a warm, moist and unstable atmosphere in Suzhou. With the entrainment of dry air, the northwest dry jet and the southeast moist jet stimulated the formation of a miniature supercell. (4) The low-level vertical wind shear of 0–1 km increased significantly upon tornado occurrence, which was more conducive to the formation and intensification of horizontal vorticity tubes. Encountering updrafts and downdrafts, the vorticity tubes might have been stretched and intensified. The first lightning jumps appeared 15 min and 66 min earlier than the Kunshan Bacheng tornado and the Taicang Liuhe tornado. Dual-polarization radar data are useful for numerical models to improve precipitation forecasts. For an extremely heavy precipitation event that occurred in Central China on 11 August 2021, the hydrometeor concentration and water vapor content used in the initial field of the Weather Research and Forecasting (version 4.1) model are retrieved by the statistical relationship of relative humidity with dual-polarization radar reflectivity in Suizhou City of Central China. Three experiments are conducted, and the simulation results are compared after assimilating the radar data. The results indicate that the multiple factors contributing to this extreme heavy precipitation event included the divergence of upper-level airflows, the middle- and low-level low vortex/shear, the easterly jet stream in front of the low vortex, and the continuous intrusion of cold air on the ground. In addition, with the retrieval of the hydrometeor concentration and water vapor content, the composite reflectivity forecast results are more similar to the observations. Also, the location and intensity of the short-term extremely heavy precipitation event are less different from the observations. In addition, by cyclically adjusting the hydrometeor concentration and water vapor content in the initial field, we can obtain better forecasts of the reflectivity and short-term extremely heavy precipitation, and this improvement can be maintained for approximately 3 h. Precipitation products play an important role in monitoring rainstorm processes. This study takes a rare historical event of extreme, heavy precipitation that occurred in Henan Province, China, in July 2021 as a research case. By analyzing the distribution of the spatial and temporal characteristics of precipitation errors, using a probability density function of the occurrence of precipitation and the daily variation pattern, we assess the capability of a radar precipitation estimation product (RADAR), satellite precipitation products (IMERG and GSMAP), a reanalysis product (ERA5) and a precipitation fusion product (the CMPAS) to monitor an extreme rainstorm in the Henan region. The CMPAS has the best fit with the gauge observations in terms of the precipitation area, precipitation maximum and the evolution of the whole process, with a low spatial variability of errors. However, the CMPAS slightly underestimated the precipitation extremum at the peak moment (06:00–08:00). The RADAR product was prone to a spurious overestimation of the originally small rainfall, especially during peak precipitation times, with deviations concentrated in the core precipitation area. The IMERG, GSMAP and ERA5 products have similar performances, all of which failed to effectively capture heavy precipitation in excess of 60 mm/h, with negative deviations in precipitation at mountainfront locations west of northern Henan Province. There is still a need for terrain-specific error revisions for areas with large topographic relief. By merging and processing precipitation data from multiple sources, the accuracy of the CMPAS is better than any single-source precipitation product. The CMPAS has the characteristic advantage of high spatial and temporal resolutions (0.01° × 0.01°/1 h), which play a positive role in precipitation dynamic monitoring, providing early warnings of heavy rainfall processes and hydrological application research. China accomplished a historic milestone in 2020 when the mission Chang'e-5 (CE-5) to the Lunar's surface was successfully launched. An extraordinary component of this mission is the "Lunar Regolith Penetrating Radar" (LRPR) housed within its lander, which currently stands as the most advanced payload in terms of vertical resolution among all penetrating radars employed in lunar exploration. This provides an unprecedented opportunity for high-precision research into the interior structure of the shallow lunar regolith. Previous studies have achieved fruitful research results based on the data from LRPR, updating our perception of the shallow-level regolith of the Moon. This paper provides an overview of the new advancements achieved by the LRPR in observing the basic structure of the shallow regolith of the Moon. It places special emphasis on the role played by the LRPR in revealing details about the shallow lunar regolith's structure, its estimated dielectric properties, the provenance of the regolith materials from the landing area, and its interpretation of the geological stratification at the landing site. China has successfully carried out five lunar exploration missions since 2007. These missions indicate that China has successfully implemented a three-step lunar exploration program of "orbiting, landing, and returning". Among them, the Lunar Penetrating Radar (LPR) carried by the Yutu-2 rover in the Chang'E-4 (CE-4) mission is the only one still operating on the far side of the Moon. Up to now, the Yutu-2 radar has measured a large amount of scientific data, and its observations are of great significance to human cognition of the geological evolution of the lunar surface and the exploration of possible lunar in situ resources. This paper reviews the scientific results obtained by previous researchers based on the radar exploration data of Yutu-2, focusing mainly on three aspects, e.g., the geological structure of the shallow surface at the CE-4 landing site, the dielectric properties of the shallow subsurface materials and the special geological features. Finally, the prospects of Yutu-2 radar research priorities and future exploration, and the application trend of Moon-based ground-penetrating radar are given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With China's fruit tree industry becoming the largest in the world, accurately understanding the spatial distribution of fruit tree growing areas is crucial for promoting socio-economic development and rural revitalization. Remote sensing offers unprecedented opportunities for fruit tree monitoring. However, previous research has mainly focused on UAV and near-ground remote sensing, with limited accuracy in obtaining fruit tree distribution information through satellite remote sensing. In this study, we utilized the Google Earth Engine (GEE) remote sensing cloud platform and integrated data from Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and SRTM sources. We constructed a feature space by extracting original band features, vegetation index features, polarization features, terrain features, and texture features. The sequential forward selection (SFS) algorithm was employed for feature optimization, and a combined machine learning and object-oriented classification model was used to accurately extract fruit tree crop distributions by comparing key temporal phases of fruit trees. The results revealed that the backscatter coefficient features from Sentinel-1 had the highest contribution to the classification, followed by the original band features and vegetation index features from Sentinel-2, while the terrain features had a relatively smaller contribution. The highest classification accuracy for jujube plantation areas was observed in November (99.1% for user accuracy and 96.6% for producer accuracy), whereas the lowest accuracy was found for pear tree plantation areas in the same month (93.4% for user accuracy and 89.0% for producer accuracy). Among the four different classification methods, the combined random forest and object-oriented (RF + OO) model exhibited the highest accuracy (OA = 0.94, Kappa = 0.92), while the support vector machine (SVM) classification method had the lowest accuracy (OA = 0.52, Kappa = 0.31). The total fruit tree plantation area in Aksu City in 2022 was estimated to be 64,000 hectares, with walnut, jujube, pear, and apple trees accounting for 42.5%, 20.6%, 19.3%, and 17.5% of the total fruit tree area, respectively (27,200 hectares, 13,200 hectares, 12,400 hectares, and 11,200 hectares, respectively). The SFS feature optimization and RF + OO-combined classification model algorithm selected in this study effectively mapped the fruit tree planting areas, enabling the estimation of fruit tree planting areas based on remote sensing satellite image data. This approach facilitates accurate fruit tree industry and real-time crop monitoring and provides valuable support for fruit tree planting management by the relevant departments. This study analyzes microphysical signatures relevant to the short‐cycle lightning activity in the inner core of Typhoon Hato (2017) before landfall in China. Observations reveal that the lightning bursts were accompanied by enhanced inner‐core convection with a behavior cycle of about 3 hr. The coupling between wavenumber‐2 vortex Rossby waves (VRWs) and shear‐forced convective asymmetries resulted in a local updraft enhancement. Furthermore, supercooled liquid water droplets invigorated a striking enhancement of graupel via riming immediately above the freezing level, further enhancing charge separation and lightning generation outside the eyewall. Furthermore, when similar phase‐locking was associated with other propagating VRWs, graupel and updraft volumes were significantly boosted, leading to short‐cycle lightning outbreaks in the inner core. Plain Language Summary: Lightning behavior is one of the well‐defined indicators of convection within the Tropical cyclone (TC) circulation. Before the landfall of Typhoon Hato (2017), we found short‐cycle lightning outbreaks in the inner core of this typhoon. The interaction between the internal structures of the storm and changes in wind speed and direction with height could strikingly reinforce convection, thereby favorable for the short‐cycle electrification enhancement. This scenario is distinct from diurnal lightning bursts within TCs, which were found in previous studies. The diurnal lightning activity is thermodynamically governed by radiation, while vortex‐environment interactions in the inner core of Hato dynamically force the short‐cycle lightning outbreaks revealed here. Turbulence is ubiquitous in the planetary boundary layer (PBL), which is of great importance to the prediction of weather and air quality. Nevertheless, the profiles of turbulence in the whole PBL as observed by radar wind profilers (RWPs) are rarely reported. In this communication, the purpose was to investigate the vertical structures of turbulence dissipation rate (ε) obtained from the Doppler spectrum width measurements from two RWPs at plateau (Zhangbei) and plain (Baoding) stations in the North China Plain for the year 2021, and to tease out the underlying mechanism for the difference of ε between Zhangbei and Baoding. Under clear-sky conditions, the annual mean value of ε in the PBL over the plateau station was found to be higher than that over the plain station throughout the daytime from 0900 to 1700 local standard time. The magnitude of ε at both stations showed significant seasonal variation, with the strongest ε in summer but the weakest in winter. If a larger difference between the 2 m air temperature and surface temperature (Ta−Ts), as a surrogate of sensible heat flux, is observed, the turbulence intensity tends to become stronger. The influence of vertical wind shear on turbulence was also analyzed. Comparison analyses showed that the plateau station of Zhangbei was characterized by larger sensible heat flux and stronger wind shear compared with the plain station of Baoding. This may account for the more intense ε within the PBL of Zhangbei. Moreover, the magnitude of ε in the PBL was positively correlated with the values of both Ta−Ts and vertical wind shear. A summer convective precipitation case, occurring in eastern China on 16–17 July 2020, is selected to investigate the impact of joint assimilation of ground-based profiling platforms and weather radars on forecasting convective storms using observational system simulation experiments (OSSEs). The simulated profiling platforms include the Doppler wind lidar (DWL), a wind profiler (WP), and a microwave radiometer (MWR). Results show that joint assimilation of WP and radar data produces a better analysis of convective dynamical structure than joint assimilation of DWL and radar data, since WP detects deeper layer winds. Joint assimilation of MWR and radar data enables rapid adjustment of temperature and humidity and thus, avoids the potential errors introduced by the latent heat term of the radar diabatic initialization in the early stage. Profiling observations in a horizontal spacing of 80 km provide fewer benefits for convective forecasting, while reducing the spacing to 40 km can dramatically improve model analysis and forecasts. Joint assimilation of multiple profiling observations in a 20-km horizontal spacing with radar data exhibits a beneficial synergistic effect and mitigates "the ramp-down issue" during the forecast stage. Assimilating profiling observations with an update interval less than 30 min does not have as pronounced an effect on convective forecasts as horizontal spacing. Furthermore, assimilating profiling observations at a 20-km horizontal spacing can obtain accurate mesoscale background environment and forecast storms with an ability comparable to radar data assimilation. This work emphasizes the need to consider implementing a joint mesoscale detection system that incorporates weather radars and profiling observations for leveraging convective storm forecasting. Based on the 20-year high-resolution precipitation data from TRMM and GPM radar products, diurnal features over complex terrains along the Yangtze River (YR) are investigated. Using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method, the first (diurnal) and second (semi-diurnal) harmonic amplitude and phase of precipitation amount (PA), precipitation frequency (PF), and intensity (PI) are analyzed. The diurnal amplitudes of PA and PF have a decreasing trend from the west to the east with the decreasing altitude of large-scale terrain, while the semi-diurnal amplitudes of PA and PI depict the bimodal precipitation cycle over highlands. For the eastward propagation of PA, PF is capable of depicting the propagation from the upper to the middle reaches of YR, while PI shows the eastward propagation from the middle to the lower reaches of YR during nighttime and presents sensitivity to highlands and lowlands. According to the contribution of different-sized precipitation systems to PI over the highlands and lowlands, the small (<200 km2) ones contribute the least while the large ones (>6000 km2) contribute the most, but the medium ones (200–6000 km2) show a slightly larger contribution over the highlands than over the lowlands. The propagation of each scaled precipitation system along the YR is further analyzed. We found that small precipitation systems mainly happen in the afternoon without obvious propagation. Medium ones peak 2–4 h later than the small ones, with two eastward propagation directions at night from the middle reaches of YR to the east. The large ones are mainly located in lowlands at night, with two propagation routes in the morning over the middle and lower reaches of YR. The northeastern China cold vortex (NCCV) is the main weather system affecting Northeast China. Based on the precipitation products from the dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR) onboard the Global Precipitation Measurement core observatory (GPM) satellite, the precipitation structures and microphysical properties for different rain types in 6432 NCCVs from 2014 to 2019 were studied using dynamic composite analysis. Our results show that the precipitation in NCCVs is dominated by stratiform precipitation. Regions with high stratiform and convective precipitation frequency have a comma shape. The growth mechanism of precipitation particles changes at ~4 km in altitude, the lower particles grow through collision (more pronounced in convective precipitation), and the upper hydrometeors grow through the Bergeron process. Additionally, the precipitation structures and microphysical properties exhibit great regional variations in NCCVs. The rainfall for all rain types is the strongest in the southeast region within an NCCV, mainly characterized by higher near-surface droplet concentration, while precipitation events occur more frequently in the southeast region for all rain types. There are active rimming growth processes above the melting layer for convective precipitation in the western region of an NCCV. The detection of lava tubes beneath the surfaces of the Moon and Mars has been a popular research topic and challenge in planetary radar observation. In recent years, the Moon–based ground penetrating radar (GPR) carried by the Chinese Chang'e–3/–4 mission, the RIMFAX radar carried by the Mars mission Perseverance, and the RoSPR radar and MOSIR radar carried by China's Tianwen–1 orbiter have extensively promoted the exploration of the underground space of extraterrestrial bodies, which is crucial for the future utilization and development of these spaces. This paper expounds on the principles, methods, and detection results of using GPR to detect lava tubes on the Moon and Mars. First, lava tubes' formation mechanism and morphological characteristics are outlined, followed by an introduction to GPR's working principles and classification. The advantages, disadvantages, and prospects of different types of radar in detecting the lava tubes are analyzed. Finally, the distribution of lava tubes on the Moon and Mars is briefly summarized, and the potential utilization of lava tubes is discussed. We believe that the GPR technique is an effective geophysical method for exploring the underground structures of the Moon and Mars, and the lava tubes beneath the surface of extraterrestrial bodies can provide important references for selecting future Moon and Mars bases. The Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) neural network has great potential in estimating and predicting a variable. In addition to radar reflectivity (Z), radar echo-top height (ET) is also a good indicator of rainfall rate (R). In this study, we propose a new method, GRU_Z-ET, by introducing Z and ET as two independent variables into the GRU neural network to conduct the quantitative single-polarization radar precipitation estimation. The performance of GRU_Z-ET is compared with that of the other three methods in three heavy rainfall cases in China during 2018, namely, the traditional Z-R relationship (Z=300R1.4), the optimal Z-R relationship (Z=79R1.68) and the GRU neural network with only Z as the independent input variable (GRU_Z). The results indicate that the GRU_Z-ET performs the best, while the traditional Z-R relationship performs the worst. The performances of the rest two methods are similar. To further evaluate the performance of the GRU_Z-ET, 200 rainfall events with 21882 total samples during May–July of 2018 are used for statistical analysis. Results demonstrate that the spatial correlation coefficients, threat scores and probability of detection between the observed and estimated precipitation are the largest for the GRU_Z-ET and the smallest for the traditional Z-R relationship, and the root mean square error is just the opposite. In addition, these statistics of GRU_Z are similar to those of optimal Z-R relationship. In order to improve the understanding of the microphysical characteristics of raindrop size distribution (DSD) under different rainfall rates (R) classes, and broaden the knowledge of the impact of radar wavelengths and R classes on the QPE of dual-polarization radars in the Tianshan Mountains, a typical arid area in China, we investigated the microphysical characteristics of DSD across R classes and dual-polarimetric radar QPE relationships across radar wavelengths and R classes, based on the DSD data from a PARSIVEL2 disdrometer at Zhaosu in the Tianshan Mountains during the summers of 2020 and 2021. As the R class increased, the DSD became wider and flatter. The mean value of the mass-weighted mean diameters (Dm) increased, while the mean value of logarithm normalized intercept parameters (log10 Nw) decreased after increasing from C1 to C3, as the R class increased. The largest contributions to R and the radar reflectivity factor from large raindrops (diameter > 3 mm) accounted for approximately 50% and 97%, respectively, while 84% of the total raindrops were small raindrops (diameter < 1 mm). Dual-polarization radars—horizontal polarization reflectivity (Zh), differential reflectivity (Zdr), and specific differential phase (Kdp)—were retrieved based on the DSD data using the T-matrix scattering method. The DSD-based polarimetric radar QPE relations of a single-parameter (R(Zh), R(Kdp)), and double-parameters (R(Zh,Zdr), R(Kdp,Zdr)) on the S-, C-, and X-bands were derived and evaluated. Overall, the performance of the R(Kdp) (R(Kdp,Zdr)) scheme was better than that of R(Zh) (R(Zh,Zdr)) for the QPE in the three bands. Furthermore, we have for the first time confirmed and quantified the performance differences in the QPE relationship of dual-polarization radars under different schemes, radar wavelengths, and R classes in typical arid areas of China. Therefore, selecting an appropriate dual-polarization radar band and QPE scheme for different R classes is necessary to improve the QPE ability compared with an independent scheme under all R classes. During the pre-summer rainy season, heavy rainfall occurs frequently in South China. Based on polarimetric radar observations, the microphysical characteristics and processes of convective features associated with extreme rainfall rates (ERCFs) are examined. In the regions with high ERCF occurrence frequency, sub-regional differences are found in the lightning flash rate (LFR) distributions. In the region with higher LFRs, the ERCFs have larger volumes of high reflectivity factor above the freezing level, corresponding to more active riming processes. In addition, these ERCFs are more organized and display larger spatial coverage, which may be related to the stronger low-level wind shear and higher terrain in the region. In the region with lower LFRs, the ERCFs have lower echo tops and lower-echo centroids. However, no clear differences of the most unstable convective available potential energy (MUCAPE) exist in the ERCFs in the regions with different LFR characteristics. Regardless of the LFRs, raindrop collisional coalescence is the main process for the growth of raindrops in the ERCFs. In the ERCFs within the region with lower LFRs, the main mechanism for the rapid increase of liquid water content with decreasing altitude below 4 km is through the warm-rain processes converting cloud drops to raindrops. Data-driven machine learning technology can learn and extract features, a factor which is well recognized to be powerful in the warning and prediction of severe weather. With the large-scale deployment of the radar wind profile (RWP) observational network in China, dynamical variables with higher temporal and spatial resolution in the vertical become strong supports for machine-learning-based severe convection prediction. Based on the RWP mesonet that has been deployed in Beijing, this study uses the measurements from four triangles composed of six RWP stations to determine the profiles of divergence, vorticity, and vertical velocity before rainfall onsets. These dynamic feature variables, combined with cloud properties from Himawari-8 and ERA-5 reanalysis, serve as key input parameters for two rainfall forecast models based on the random forest (RF) classification algorithm. One is for the rainfall/non-rainfall forecast and another for the rainfall grade forecast. The roles of dynamic features such as divergence, vorticity, and vertical velocity are examined from ERA-5 reanalysis data and RWP measurements. The contribution of each feature variable to the performance of the RF model in independent tests is also discussed here. The results show that the usage of RWP observational data as the RF model input tends to result in better performance in rainfall/non-rainfall forecast 30 min in advance of rainfall onset than using the ERA-5 data as inputs. For the rainfall grade forecast, the divergence and vorticity that were estimated from the RWP measurements at 800 hPa show importance in improving the model performance in heavy and moderate rain forecasts. This indicates that the atmospheric dynamic variable measurements from RWP have great potential to improve the prediction skill of convection with the aid of a machine learning model. Recent upgrades to China's radar network now allow for polarimetric measurements of convective systems in central China, providing an effective data set with which to evaluate the microphysics schemes employed in local squall line simulations. We compared polarimetric radar variables derived by Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) and radar forward models and the corresponding hydrometeor species with radar observations and retrievals for a severe squall line observed over central China on 16 March 2022. Two microphysics schemes were tested and were able to accurately depict the contrast between convective and stratiform regions in terms of the drop size distribution (DSD) and reproduce the classical polarimetric signatures of the observed differential reflectivity (ZDR) and specific differential phase (KDP) columns. However, for the convective region, the simulated DSDs in both schemes exhibited lower proportions of large drops and lower liquid water content; by contrast, for the stratiform region, the proportion of large drops was found to be too high in the Morrison (MORR) scheme. The underprediction of ice-phase processes in the convective region, particularly the riming processes associated with graupel and hail, was likely responsible for the bias toward large raindrops at low levels. In the stratiform region, raindrop evaporation in the WRF Double-Moment 6-Class (WDM6) scheme, which partially offsets the overestimation of ice-phase processes, produced ground DSDs that more closely matched the observational data, and did not exhibit the overly strong warm-rain collisional growth processes of MORR. The performance of different quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) relationships is examined using the polarimetric variables from the X-band polarimetric phased-array radars in Guangzhou, China. Three QPE approaches, namely, R(ZH), R(ZH, ZDR) and R(KDP), are developed for horizontal reflectivity, differential reflectivity and specific phase shift rate, respectively. The estimation parameters are determined by fitting the relationships to the observed radar variables using the T-matrix method. The QPE relationships were examined using the data of four heavy precipitation events in southern China. The examination shows that the R(ZH) approach performs better for the precipitation rate less than 5 mm h-1, and R(KDP) is better for the rate higher than 5 mm h-1, while R(ZH, ZDR) has the worst performance. Finally, the convective windstorm identification process was determined when two adjacent stations near the convective system had a maximum wind gust reaching gale force. With the continuous development of the China ocean dynamic environment satellite series (Haiyang-2, HY-2), it is urgent to explore the potential application of HY-2B in Arctic sea ice thickness retrievals. In this study, we first derive the Arctic radar freeboard and sea ice thickness during two cycles (from October 2019 to April 2020 and from October 2020 to April 2021) using the HY-2B radar altimeter and compare the results with the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) CryoSat-2 (CS-2) products. We evaluate our HY-2B sea ice freeboard and thickness products using Operation IceBridge (OIB) airborne data and Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite 2 (ICESat-2) products. Finally, we estimate the uncertainties in the HY-2B sea ice freeboard and sea ice thickness. Here, we derive the radar freeboard by calculating the difference between the relative elevation of the floe obtained by subtracting the mean sea surface (MSS) height and sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) determined by an average of the 15 lowest points method. The radar freeboard deviation between HY-2B and CS-2 is within 0.02 m, whereas the sea ice thickness deviation between HY-2B and CS-2 is within 0.2 m. The HY-2B radar freeboards are generally thicker than AWI CS-2, except in spring (March and April). A spring segment likely has more floe points than an early winter segment. We also find that the deviations in radar freeboard and sea ice thickness between HY-2B and CS-2 over multiyear ice (MYI) are larger than those over first-year ice (FYI). The correlation between HY-2B (CS-2) sea ice freeboard retrievals and OIB values is 0.77 (0.84), with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.13 (0.10) m and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.12 (0.081) m. The correlation between HY-2B (CS-2) sea ice thickness retrievals and OIB values is 0.65 (0.80), with an RMSE of 1.86 (1.00) m and an MAE of 1.72 (0.75) m. The HY-2B sea ice freeboard uncertainty values range from 0.021 to 0.027 m, while the uncertainties in the HY-2B sea ice thickness range from 0.61 to 0.74 m. The future work will include reprocessing the HY-2B L1 data with a dedicated sea ice retracker, and using the radar waveforms to directly identify leads to release products that are more reasonable and suitable for polar sea ice thickness retrieval. The Rover-mounted Subsurface Penetrating Radar (RoSPR) is one of the scientific payloads onboard China's first independent Mars exploration mission, Tianwen-1. The radar aims to characterize the thickness of the upper Martian soil and investigate the subsurface stratigraphy by collecting and processing the data. This article is mainly divided into two parts, the introduction of data pre-processing and analysis of pre-processed radar signals, aiming at helping scientists make more effective use of radar data. The first part describes the operating principle of the RoSPR and the procedure of radar data pre-processing at all levels. Data pre-processing is mainly designed to transfer the raw data format to a common PDS (Planetary Data System) and eliminate the influence of the instrument. In the signal analysis part, the performances of both self-check signals and echo signals of low- and high-frequency channels are analyzed, which indicate a stable radar system and are useful for background removal. Phase and time calibration is of great importance for improving data quality and making the radar data more accurate. Since early 2019, the Lunar Penetrating Radar (LPR) onboard Chang'e‐4 (CE‐4)'s Yutu‐2 rover has been gathering data relating to the subsurface structure of the Von Kármán crater within the South Pole‐Aitken Basin (SPA) on the lunar farside. Low‐frequency radar data have the potential of carrying geological information of about 300 m worth of strata below the traversed path. Forty‐two days' data have revealed a bifurcated structure within the layered structure beneath the CE‐4 surveying area for the first time, affecting the overlying reflectors between 90 and 310 m. This study suggests that, based on the morphological characteristics, thickness, depth (timing sequence) and direction of the newly found structure, its origin might be linked to the deposition of ejecta from the Schrödinger impact. The local stratigraphy is interpreted as consisting of distinct geological layers, corresponding to the superposition of ejecta from different impact craters, paleo‐regolith, and basaltic lava flows. Plain Language Summary: A radar (the Lunar Penetrating Radar, or LPR), built to look at the rocks below the surface, is presently traveling across an area of the lunar farside onboard a rover, called Yutu‐2 sent by China to shed some light on the striking difference between the Earth‐facing side of the Moon and its farside. So far, the radar has revealed layered structures interpreted as distinct volcanic flows, thus helping to unravel their history. The rover has been surveying the floor of the Von Kármán crater inside one of the oldest and largest impact structures of the Moon, the South Pole‐Aitken (SPA) Basin. By analyzing 42 lunar days of data, we found a new layer with a hunched upper surface and a relatively flat bottom inserted into a multilayered structure. Based on the morphology, thickness, depth, and direction of the new feature, we argue that its source could represent the ejecta deposition from one of the ancient lunar impact basins: Schrödinger. The subsurface structure revealed by the radar shows a complicated geologic history on the farside including multiple lava eruption events, the deposition of ejecta from different impact craters and weathering layers that develop during the quiescent stage. Precipitation nowcasting has important implications for urban operation and flood prevention. Radar echo extrapolation is the common method in precipitation nowcasting. Using deep learning models to extrapolate radar echo data has great potential. The increase of lead time leads to a weaker correlation between real rainfall evolution and generated images. The evolution information is easily lost during extrapolation, which is reflected as echoes attenuation. Existing models, including Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based models, are all difficult to reduce loss and curb attenuation, which results in insufficient rainfall prediction accuracy. Aim to the problem, a Spatiotemporal Process Intensification Network (GAN-argcPredNet v2.0) based on GAN-argcPredNet v1.0 is designed. GAN-argcPredNet v2.0 reduces the loss by intensifying the influence of the previously input evolution information. A Spatiotemporal Information Changes Prediction (STIC-Prediction) network is designed as generator. With the intensification of echo feature sequence, the generator focuses on the spatiotemporal variation and generates more accurate images. Furthermore, discriminator is a Channel-Spatial Convolution (CS-Convolution) network. The discriminator intensifies the discrimination of echoes information by strengthening spatial information of single image. Identification results are fed back to the generator, which reduces the loss of important evolutionary information. The experiments are based on the radar dataset of South China. The results show that GAN-argcPredNet v2.0 performs better than other models. In heavy rainfall prediction, compared with baseline, the Probability of Detection (POD), the Critical Success Index (CSI), and the Heidke Skill Score (HSS) increase by 24.8 %, 22.2 % and 21.5 % respectively. In this study, the quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) capability of three X-band dual-polarization phased array radars (PAR) in Guangzhou, South China, was demonstrated, with an S-band operational dual-polarization radar as the benchmark. Rainfall rate (R) estimators based on the specific differential phase (KDP) for summer precipitation for both X-band and S-band radars were derived from the raindrop size distributions (DSDs) observed by a 2-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD) in South China. Rainfall estimates from the radars were evaluated with gauge observations in three events, including pre-summer rainfall, typhoon precipitation, and local severe convective precipitation. Observational results showed that radar echoes from the X-band PARs suffered much more severely from attenuation than those from the S-band radar. Compared to S-band observations, the X-band echoes can disappear when the signal-to-noise ratio drops to a certain level due to severe attenuation, resulting in different estimated rainfall areas for X- and S-band radars. The attenuation corrected by KDP had good consistency with S-band observations, but the accuracy of attenuation correction was affected by DSD uncertainty and may vary in different types of precipitation. The QPE results demonstrated that the R(KDP) estimator produced better rainfall accumulations from the X-band PAR observations compared to the S-band observations. For both the X-band and S-band radars, the estimates of hourly accumulated rainfall became more accurate in heavier rainfall, due to the decreases of both the DSD uncertainty and the impact of measurement errors. In the heavy precipitation area, the estimation accuracy of the X-band radar was high, and the overestimation of the S-band radar was obvious. Through the analysis of the ZH-ZDR distribution in the three weather events, it was found that the X-band PAR with the capability of high spatiotemporal observations can capture minute-level changes in the microphysical characteristics, which help improve the estimation accuracy of ground rainfall. Currently, most deep learning (DL)-based models for precipitation forecasting face two conspicuous issues: the smoothing effect in the precipitation field and the degenerate effect of forecasting precipitation intensity. Therefore, this study proposes "time series residual convolution (TSRC)", a DL-based convolutional neural network for precipitation nowcasting over China with a lead time of 3 h. The core idea of TSRC is it compensates the current local cues with previous local cues during convolution processes, so more contextual information and less uncertain features would remain in deep networks. We use four years' radar echo reflectivity data from 2017 to 2020 for model training and one year's data from 2021 for model testing and compare it with two commonly used nowcasting models: optical flow model (OF) and UNet. Results show that TSRC obtains better forecasting performances than OF and UNet with a relatively high probability of detection (POD), low false alarm rate (FAR), small mean absolute error (MAE) and high structural similarity index (SSIM), especially at longer lead times. Meanwhile, the results of two case studies suggest that TSRC still introduces smoothing effects and slightly outperforms UNet at longer lead times. The most considerable result is that our model can forecast high-intensity radar echoes even for typhoon rainfall systems, suggesting that the degenerate effect of forecasting precipitation intensity can be improved by our model. Future works will focus on the combination of multi-source data and the design of the model's architecture to gain further improvements in precipitation short-term forecasting. In general, the IMARC of cells generating convective windstorms was higher than those of cells without, that is, the radial convergence of the cells generating convective windstorms was stronger than those of cells without convective windstorms. However, distribution of ZMAX of the cells generating convective windstorms was higher than those of the cells without windstorms. Weather radars are commonly used to track the development of convective storms due to their high resolution and accuracy. However, the coverage of existing weather radar is very limited, especially in mountainous and ocean areas. Geostationary meteorological satellites can provide near global coverage and near real-time observations, which can compensate for the lack of radar observations. In this paper, a deep learning method was used to estimate the radar composite reflectivity from observations of China's new-generation geostationary meteorological satellite FY-4A and topographic data. The derived radar reflectivity products from satellite observations can be used over regions without radar coverage. In general, the deep learning model can reproduce the overall position, shape, and intensity of the radar echoes. In addition, evaluation of the reconstruction radar observations indicates that a modified model based on the attention mechanism (Attention U-Net model) has better performance than the traditional U-Net model in terms of all statistics such as the probability of detection (POD), critical success index (CSI), and root-mean-square error (RMSE), and the modified model has stronger capability on reconstructing details and strong echoes. Lidar at 1064 nm and Ka-band millimetre-wave cloud radar (MMCR) are powerful tools for detecting the height distribution of cloud boundaries and can monitor the entire life cycle of cloud layers. In this study, lidar and MMCR are employed to jointly detect cloud boundaries under different conditions. By enhancing the echo signal of lidar at 1064 nm and combining its signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the cloud signal can be accurately extracted from the aerosol signals and background noise. The interference signal is eliminated from Doppler spectra of the MMCR by using the noise ratio of the smallest measurable cloud signal (SNR min⁡) and the spectral point continuous threshold (Nts). Moreover, the quality control of the reflectivity factor of MMCR obtained by the inversion is conducted, which improves the detection accuracy of the cloud signal. We analysed three typical cases studies; case one presents two interesting phenomena: (a) at 19:00–20:00 CST (China standard time), the ice crystal particles at the cloud top boundary are too small to be detected by MMCR, but they are well detected by lidar. (b) At 19:00–00:00 CST, the cirrus cloud changes to altostratus where the cloud particles eventually grow into large sizes, producing precipitation. Further, MMCR has more advantages than lidar in detection of the cloud top boundary within this period. Considering the advantages of the two devices, the change characteristics of the cloud boundary in Xi'an from December 2020 to November 2021 were analysed, with MMCR detection data as the main data and lidar data as the assistant data. The seasonal variation characteristics of clouds show that, in most cases, high clouds often occur in summer and autumn, and the low clouds are usually in winter. The normalized cloud cover shows that the maximum and minimum cloud cover occur in summer and winter, respectively. Furthermore, the cloud boundary frequency distribution results for the whole of the observation period show that the cloud bottom boundary below 1.5 km is more than 1 %, the frequency within the height range of 3.06–3.6 km is approximately 0.38 %, and the frequency above 8 km is less than 0.2 %. The cloud top boundary frequency distribution exhibits the characteristics of a bimodal distribution. Southwest China is with complex topography including basins, mountains, hills and plains, where abrupt heavy rainfall events (AHREs) occur frequently and are difficult to quantitatively estimate due to limited ground‐based observations. Using the data of ground rain gauges and GPM dual‐frequency precipitation radar during April to September in 2014–2020, this study investigates vertical structures of AHREs over southwest China. Both mass‐weighted mean diameter (Dm) and reflectivity (Ze) of AHREs increase rapidly in ice‐phase process but slowly in liquid‐phase process. For convective rainfall of AHREs, abundant water vapour and strong atmospheric convective motion cause higher Dm and Ze but lower generalized intercept parameter (dBNw) than those for stratiform rainfall. Moreover, ice‐phase process is active while liquid‐phase process is weak in the mountains, but the situation is opposite in the plains, which results in large‐size and low‐concentration raindrops in the mountains while small‐size and high‐concentration raindrops in the plains. Furthermore, statistical models of vertical profile of reflectivity (VPR) indicate that VPR patterns are affected by surface rain intensity and present different trends around the 0°C level between stratiform and convective rainfalls. In addition, higher rain top height in the mountains is conducive to ice‐phase process while lower terrain height in the plains is favourable for liquid‐phase process. Therefore, the VPR pattern depends on rain type, terrain and rainfall intensity, and its fine model is beneficial for understanding microphysical process of AHREs and improving quantitative precipitation estimation by ground‐based radars. This work evaluates and compares the performance of the radar reflectivity and lightning data assimilation schemes implemented in weather research and forecasting-four-dimensional data assimilation (WRF-FDDA) for short-term precipitation and lightning forecasts. All six mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) with a duration greater than seven hours that occurred in the Guangdong Province of China during June 2020 were included in the experiments. The results show that both the radar reflectivity data assimilation and lightning data assimilation improved the analyses and short-term forecasts of the precipitation and lightning of the MCSs. On average, for precipitation forecasts, the experiments with radar reflectivity data assimilation performed better than those with lightning data assimilation; however, for lightning forecasts, the experiments with lightning data assimilation performed better in the analysis period and 1 h forecast, and for some cases, the superiority lasted to three forecast hours. China's BeiDou navigation system has been completed and is currently in operation. As the newest constellation, BD-3 is composed of 30 satellite configurations. The application of BD-3 has improved rapidly, however, using the BD-3 signal as a signal resource in the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) passive radar domain to monitor deformation has not been proven to be feasible. The authors of his paper designed a BD-3 passive radar model and carried out a proof-of-concept experimental demonstration for deformation monitoring. As a result, a method based on the B3I signal as a signal resource for GNSS radar (GNSS-R) deformation monitoring is proven to be feasible. The experimental scenarios include laboratory simulation and proof of concept field displacement deformation. The test error reaches a value of 0.023 m for a simulation scenario, 0.0435 m for a field scene of deformation based on a target translation measurement, and 0.1011 m for a field scene of deformation based on a target rotation measurement. All pineapples are harvested manually at present in China. But manual harvesting cannot fully meet the large-scale production against the ever-increasing greying workforce. Fortunately, automatic navigation can be expected to develop the pineapple harvester. In this study, a path planning algorithm was proposed as the navigation scheme to improve the mechanization and automation level of pineapple harvesting. An improved RRT* algorithm was also used for global path planning. Firstly, the self-heuristic idea was used to constrain the generation range of sampling points. Then, the bias probability pbias was introduced to generate the random sampling points. Specifically, the sampling points were randomly generated with the probability p in the space, when p>pbias. Otherwise, the target point was used as the sampling point, in order to decrease the blindness of sampling point generation. Thirdly, the gravitational field of the artificial potential field, and the concept of direction weight were introduced in the new node expansion. The weights wg and wk were assigned to the directions of the sampling and target point, respectively, where the direction was constrained in the expansion of the new node. Fourthly, the bidirectional expansion was used to speed up the iteration speed in the double-tree expansion. Finally, the greedy algorithm was applied to prune the redundant nodes of the path. The Cantmull-Rom interpolation function was also used to smooth the path corners. Three environments (including multiple obstacles, mazes, and narrow passages) were created to simulate the path planning process, in order to evaluate the performance among the improved navigation path planning, RRT* and bidirectional RRT* algorithm. Planning time, node number, and path length were selected as the indicators. Each algorithm experimented with 30 times in every single environment. The average, maximum, minimum, and standard deviation were calculated for the simulation data of the three indicators, respectively. The simulation results showed that the average planning time of the path planning algorithm in the three environments was 17.97%, and 46.12% higher than that of the RRT* and bidirectional RRT* algorithms, respectively, while the average programming speed was 4.7, and 2.2 times as rapid as that of the RRT*, and bidirectional RRT* algorithm, respectively. Furthermore, the average node number was 87.22% and 52.52% less than that of the RRT* and bidirectional RRT* algorithms, respectively. The average path length was 3.81% and 6.08% less than the RRT* and bidirectional RRT* algorithms, respectively. The field test showed that the planning time was only 14.12% and 20.34% of the RRT* and bidirectional RRT*, respectively. The iteration number was 80.89% and 69.70% less than that of the RRT* and bidirectional RRT*, respectively. In addition, the rotation angles larger than 60° on the path planned by RRT* and bidirectional RRT* algorithms were 1.56 and 2.06 times as much as that of the improved, respectively, and the rotation angles larger than 100° on the path were 1.55 and 2.18 times. The improved RRT* algorithm can fully meet the path navigation requirements of agricultural machinery in the field. The pineapple harvester can run along the planned path to the target point as moving with the speed of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 m/s, but the position and heading deviation increase with the moving speed. Microphysical structures and processes in a case of precipitating stratiform clouds in North China on 21 May 2018 are investigated using joint observations from an aircraft and an X-band polarimetric radar. The results show that there are enhancements in differential reflectivity (ZDR) and specific differential phase (KDP) above the 7-km altitude, consistent with the existence of dendrites and platelike ice crystals. The horizontal reflectivity factor (ZH) increases and ZDR decreases downward above the melting layer (ML), due to the prevalent aggregation process, which is confirmed by the downward increasing volume-weighted mean diameter (Dm) and decreasing total number concentration (Nt) observed by the aircraft. Within the ML, the concentration of median-sized particles (2–5 mm) decreases rapidly downward due to the melting process. Within approximately the top 2/3 of the ML, the melting particles' mean and maximum sizes increase, demonstrating the dominance of the aggregation process. This causes the enhancements of ZH and ZDR within the radar bright band together with the increase in the dielectric constant. Within the bottom 1/3 of the ML, the breakup process is responsible for the decreasing Dm and increasing Nt observed by the aircraft. Below the ML, the measurements by the polarimetric radar and the aircraft only show slight variance with altitude, indicating the near balance between microphysical processes favored by the nearly saturated air. The Chinese Chang'E-5 probe landed in the Mons Rümker of Oceanus Procellarum on the near side of the Moon. The lunar regolith penetrating radar (LRPR) carried by the Chang'E-5 probe allows for the determination of in situ lunar regolith dielectric properties, which are probably related to the age and chemical composition of the regolith. In this paper, we analyze the Chang'E-5 LRPR data with the frequency shift method to estimate the loss tangent of the lunar regolith within a depth of ∼2.8 m. The loss tangent of the Chang'E-5 landing site is constrained to be 0.0148 ± 0.0016, which is substantially higher than that of the typical lunar regolith. The high loss tangent is found to be characteristic of the young basalt age (∼2.0 Ga) and high TiO 2 +FeO content (28.21 ± 1.57%) of the Chang'E-5 landing site. Integrated analysis of results from Chang'E-3, Chang'E-4, and Chang'E-5 show that the younger is the geologic age of the mare unit, the greater is the loss tangent of the lunar regolith, and the weaker is the radar electromagnetic signal penetrating ability. In this study, multi‐source data, especially weather radar data, were used in the analysis of structural features and evolution of a squall line‐like rainband (SLLR) of a linear mesoscale convective system (MCS) in the eastern slope of the Taihang Mountains on 12 and 13 August 2018 and reached the following conclusions: (a) The SLLR, located in north of the linear MCS, exhibited a significant horizontal gradient of reflectivity and large vertical extension. The front‐to‐rear flow that appeared between the surface and the stratosphere was lifted upward immediately in front of a cold pool that formed rearward‐tilting updrafts. (b) As the SLLR passed over, surface meteorological quantities changed drastically, coinciding with the heavy precipitation. (c) The SLLR, when propagating northeastward, showed a complex convective development of sequential intensification, weakening, and re‐intensification within a 2.5‐hr period. The temporal intensification was related not only to the development of a low‐level rear‐inflow jet but also to the dynamic interaction between the vertical environmental wind shear and the cold pool. The lifted rear‐inflow jet, which formed over a vertically stacked horizontal vorticity couplet behind the leading edge, provides a reasonable explanation for the intensification of the SLLR, resulting in the reduction of the cold pool circulation and enhancement of the convective updraft. Topographic forcing might play a crucial role in the re‐intensification of the SLLR, which suggests the importance of the cold pool and topography in structural features and convective evolution of the squall line‐like rain bands. This study investigates the impact of assimilating ground-based radar reflectivity and wind data on tropical cyclone (TC) intensity prediction. The effect on a high-impact TC in the western North Pacific region that penetrated the Bashi Channel is examined. A multiscale correction based on the successive covariance localization (SCL) method is adopted to improve the analysis and forecast performance. In addition, GNSS-R wind speed is assimilated jointly in the rapid update assimilation framework to complement the TC boundary layer where radar data are limited. Model experiments are conducted and evaluated using the observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) framework with a coupled atmosphere–ocean model nature run. Taking the experiment without data assimilation as the baseline, assimilating the radar data with the standard localization and SCL methods reduces the wind speed analysis error by 12% and 44%, respectively. The SCL method dominates the improvement in TC intensity prediction with a lead time longer than 2 days and the TC's peak intensity forecast is improved by 18 hPa. The additional assimilation of the GNSS-R wind speed observation further reduces the wind speed error in the low-level analysis by 12% and 5% under the standard and SCL radar assimilation framework, respectively. GNSS-R wind assimilation leads to a further 6-hPa improvement in TC's peak intensity. However, the sampling error introduced by the SCL method restrains the effect of GNSS-R assimilation. Sensitivity experiments with different GNSS-R data arrangements show that better GNSS-R wind coverage and additional wind direction information can further improve the TC analysis. Significance Statement: Tropical cyclone (TC) intensity prediction over the western North Pacific (WNP) region remains a significant challenge due to limited observations. This study aims to improve the TC intensity prediction in WNP by assimilating the ground-based radar data using a multiscale correction framework and incorporating with the satellite ocean surface wind speed observation. We particularly focus on a high-impact TC like Typhoon Hato (2017), which penetrated the Bashi Channel and later made landfall in China, causing great damage. Our results showed that the assimilation strategy improved the TC intensity prediction for a lead time longer than 2 days. To gain a deeper understanding of the formation and evolutionary mechanisms of a bow-shaped squall line (BSL) that occurred in East China on 10 May 2021, observations from S-band dual-polarization radars, a disdrometer and other instruments are used to investigate the characteristics and evolution of the kinematic, microphysical and radar echo structure within the squall line during its formative and mature stages. The results are as follows. The updraft induced by upper-level divergence and vertical thermal instability induced by the cold source at the middle and top of the troposphere provided environmental conditions suitable for the formation and strengthening of a squall line. The characteristics of the vertical vorticity at the leading edge of the squall line provided a good indication of its echo structure and evolutionary trend. The mechanism behind a new echo phenomenon—double high-differential reflectivity (ZDR) bands—observed in plan position indicator scans produced by the dual-polarization radar is investigated from the kinematic and microphysical structural perspectives. The evolutionary characteristics of the microphysical structure of the bulk of the squall line and its trailing stratiform cloud region are analyzed based on the quasi-vertical profiles retrieved from the S-band dual-polarization radar in Quzhou. Moreover, a conceptual model describing this type of BSL with a trailing region of stratiform rain in the warm sector is developed to provide technical support for the monitoring and early warning of BSLs. Utilizing a decade-long observation from the spaceborne dual-frequency precipitation radar, this study investigates the seasonal variations and microphysical characteristics of precipitation in North China. The results elucidate that the mean storm top height (STH) attains its zenith during the summer, potentially linked to the pronounced strong evaporation and convection. An upsurge in STH is frequently correlated with the evolution of precipitation particles of greater dimensions for both convective and stratiform precipitation. This investigation further discerns that the predominant microphysical mechanisms underlying precipitation during the process from altitudes of 3 km to 1 km exhibit significant seasonal variations and are contingent upon the precipitation types. Collision and coalescence processes are identified as the predominant contributors to precipitation formation, whereas evaporative processes and particle size sorting are less significant. For the coalescence process, the lowest is from summer (29.24%) to autumn (38.01%), spring (50.84%) and winter (58.43%). Additionally, this study observes that the altitude of the melting layer in North China(3–4 km) is relatively lower than that in East China and Yangtze-Huai River Valley region(4.5 km), which may be ascribed to the higher latitude, resulting in comparatively lower temperatures aloft and thus a reduced height for the melting layer. This study quantitatively examines the contribution of assimilating observations in the regions with different dynamic instabilities to the analysis and prediction of an extreme rainstorm event in Fujian Province of China. The wind profiling radar (WPR) observations are classified into two groups, i.e., strong and weak instability areas (SIA and WIA), according to their local dynamic instability identified by the ensemble spread. Their performance of assimilation and prediction in terms of the wind and precipitation are evaluated and compared in detail. The results show that the wind analysis error by assimilating all of the WPR observations can be reduced by about 30%. In particular, the wind analysis errors by only assimilating the observations in the SIA are about 12% lower than those in the WIA. They are related to the existence of the low-level horizontal wind shear with strong instability in the SIA. The case study shows that the assimilation of observations in the SIA can effectively correct the wind fields on the two sides of the wind shear line, producing an improved precipitation forecast compared to observation assimilation in the WIA.
