In the field of traffic management and control systems, we are witnessing a symbiotic evolution, where intelligent infrastructure is progressively collaborating with smart vehicles to produce benefits for traffic monitoring and security, by rapidly identifying hazardous behaviours. This exponential growth is due to the rapid development of deep learning in recent years, as well as the improvements in computer vision models. These technologies allow for monitoring tasks without the need to install numerous sensors or stop the traffic, using the extensive camera network of surveillance cameras already present in worldwide roads. This study proposes a computer vision-based solution that allows for real-time processing of video streams through edge computing devices, eliminating the need for Internet connectivity or dedicated sensors. In recent years, high-resolution traffic signal event data has provided valuable insights into understanding and managing congestion at signalized intersections. While existing applications primarily employ automated traffic signal performance monitoring (ATSPM) systems as postanalysis tools for identifying everyday congestion causes, traffic engineers are increasingly overwhelmed by the number of ATSPM-capable intersections. The workload increases extensively as the number of ATSPM-capable intersections rises mainly due to the necessity of manually checking and generating performance figures. Nonetheless, an advanced ATSPM system capable of automatically detecting time-of-day congestion bottlenecks among multiple intersections and suggesting "top intersections of interest" would significantly aid traffic managers in monitoring historical congestion and preventing future congestion occurrences. This paper introduces an efficient graphical automated congestion ranking method for capable intersections, leveraging high-resolution traffic signal event data as the basis for automated congestion ranking. To accomplish these objectives, we build upon ATSPM concepts by continuously generating ATSPM measures of effectiveness (MOEs). Utilizing continuously generated ATSPM performance measures in Frisco, Texas, over several months, we devise an efficient graphical method for ranking hourly congestion levels among the studied ATSPM-capable intersections. All intersections are assessed and ranked using a multiobjective optimization technique, the Pareto front method. The points on the Pareto front represent dominating intersections with at least one inferior performance measurement, warranting prioritized improvement. The dominating points identified from the test dataset were validated and further explained using Purdue coordination diagrams (PCD), along with another individual dataset--Wejo-connected vehicle data. Using historical traffic flow information to accurately and real-time predict future traffic flow information is particularly important for the management and control of traffic scenarios, and the guidance and planning of traffic travel. Short-term traffic flow prediction requires a large amount of forecast data and complex changes in traffic flow in space and time. However, the current prediction model cannot meet the requirements of real-time and accuracy of short-term traffic flow prediction. This paper proposes two traffic flow prediction models based on the changing trend and correlation of short-term traffic flow in time and space, combined with deep learning related theories. Firstly, this paper takes the traffic flow of the expressway as the research object, explores the basic parameters of traffic flow-flow, speed occupancy rate in time and space distribution law and change trend, and selects the speed as the research object, analyzes its temporal and spatial characteristics and correlation to provide data support for this study. Then, this paper introduces the related theories and frameworks of deep learning, mainly including neural network theory and hyperparameter optimization theory, as well as the deep learning model design framework. Pytorch and hyperparameter optimization framework Optuna, so as to provide theoretical foundation and technical support for this research. Finally, experiments of short-term traffic prediction based on single detection point and short-term traffic prediction based on multiple detection points are carried out on the PeMS dataset. Firstly, a multi-lane spatiotemporal convolutional network model (MSCTAN) based on traffic flow prediction at a single detection point is proposed to capture the spatiotemporal correlation of multi-lane traffic at a single detection point. Spatiotemporal Convolution and Spatiotemporal Attention Network Model (MSCSAN). For the two models proposed in this paper, comparative experiments were designed, and the mean absolute error (MAE), the root mean square error (RMSE) and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) were used as evaluation indicators to verify their performance at a single detection point and multiple detection points. The results show that, whether it is a single detection point experiment or a multi-detection point experiment, the two models achieve the best performance compared with the comparison model. Recently, the use of traffic monitoring applications is very common. Many of these, for example, have algorithms that seek the fastest way for the driver to complete the journey. Vehicular networks can be used to collect information in real time, such as traffic flow, accidents and congestion, helping to decongest the already chaotic traffic in cities. Thus, the use of vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) in this case adds greater reliability, robustness and automation to traffic control systems. Practical experiments using VANETs are scarce; therefore, it is of great importance to validate simulations and ensure that they are explored and studied by researchers in this area. According to our surveys, works that address real measurements are fewer in number compared to software simulations. One of these factors, for example, is the development of drivers and software for the equipment and the high complexity of making such experiments available. Another point that also justifies the low number of actual measurements is the high cost of the equipment that supports the IEEE 802.11p standard, as it is still not widespread in the market. The main objective of this work is to carry out a study on vehicle ad-hoc network simulators and identify the advantages and disadvantages of each simulator covered. In this study, a traffic queue model is employed to simulate traffic parameters for optimization purposes. The primary objective is to enhance the average queue length, cumulative delay, and cumulative reward for varying numbers of vehicles generated using an innovative approach. The proposed methodology integrates deep Reinforcement Q-Learning techniques implemented through a realistic simulator, Simulation of Urban MObility, based on OpenStreetMap. This simulator is used to balance the flow of traffic by monitoring traffic conditions and adjusting signals (Red/Yellow/Green) accordingly. The research extensively evaluates simulation outcomes across different scenarios involving 50, 100, 500, and 1000 vehicles, with episodes 10, 50 and 100. The results provide valuable insights into training times, simulation durations, and total rewards obtained, indicating improvements in mitigating traffic congestion. The introduction of a traffic control strategy enhances model effectiveness through the utilization of four-layer deep neural network architectures with 400 neurons in hidden layers. However, the study also highlights persistent challenges related to real-time implementation and complexities in state-action-agent relationships. The progress highlights improvements in reducing congestion and enhancing efficiency at junctions by dynamically adjusting signal phases while leveraging historical data. The article describes the problem of excessive traffic concentration at signalized pedestrian crossings. The main drawback of such crossings is the inappropriate duration of green signals for vehicles. Too long green times for vehicular traffic significantly increase time lost by pedestrians, while too short ones cause short-term congestion, resulting in long queues of vehicles and a deteriorated level of service. The negative effects of both of these situations also include dangerous behavior of road users, such as red light running or crossing. Recent (June 2021) changes in the road traffic law in Poland have privileged unprotected road users at pedestrian crossings. New models and technical and design standards proposed in this country (March 2021) recommend the installation of pedestrian priority crossings at particularly dangerous spots and in urban areas with a high proportion of pedestrian traffic. All this is done mainly for traffic-calming purposes. However, previously these measures were not a common practice in Poland. Therefore, the objective of this article was to develop a simple method of green signal timing, ensuring, firstly, priority to pedestrian traffic at such places, and, secondly, sustained capacity of vehicular traffic lanes. The developed models are practical, universal and easy to adapt in other countries. They ensure a very good or good quality of vehicle traffic service, with average lost time not exceeding 25 s in a vast majority of analyzed traffic level cases. Against the backdrop of ongoing urbanization, issues such as traffic congestion and accidents are assuming heightened prominence, necessitating urgent and practical interventions to enhance the efficiency and safety of transportation systems. A paramount challenge lies in realizing real-time vehicle monitoring, flow management, and traffic safety control within the transportation infrastructure to mitigate congestion, optimize road utilization, and curb traffic accidents. In response to this challenge, the present study leverages advanced computer vision technology for vehicle detection and tracking, employing deep learning algorithms. The resultant recognition outcomes provide the traffic management domain with actionable insights for optimizing traffic flow management and signal light control through real-time data analysis. The study demonstrates the applicability of the SE-Lightweight YOLO algorithm, as presented herein, showcasing a noteworthy 95.7% accuracy in vehicle recognition. As a prospective trajectory, this research stands poised to serve as a pivotal reference for urban traffic management, laying the groundwork for a more efficient, secure, and streamlined transportation system in the future. To solve the existing vehicle detection problems in vehicle type recognition, recognition and detection accuracy need to be improved, alongside resolving the issues of slow detection speed, and others. In this paper, we made innovative changes based on the YOLOv7 framework: we added the SE attention transfer mechanism in the backbone module, and the model achieved better results, with a 1.2% improvement compared with the original YOLOv7. Meanwhile, we replaced the SPPCSPC module with the SPPFCSPC module, which enhanced the trait extraction of the model. After that, we applied the SE-Lightweight YOLO to the field of traffic monitoring. Due to the rapid increase of the population in the world, traffic signal controlling and monitoring has become an important issue to be solved with regard to the direct relation between the number of populations and the cars' usage. In this regard, an intelligent traffic signaling with a rapid urbanization is required to prevent the traffic congestions, cost reduction, minimization in travel time, and CO2 emissions to atmosphere. This paper provides a comprehensive review of computer vision techniques for autonomic traffic control and monitoring. Moreover, recent published articles in four related topics including density estimation investigation, traffic sign detection and recognition, accident detection, and emergency vehicle detection are investigated. The conducted survey shows that there is no fair comparison and performance evaluation due to the large number of involved parameters in the abovementioned four topics which can control the traffic signal controlling system such as (computation time, dataset availability, and an accuracy). A distributed firewall is a security application that monitors and controls traffic on an organization's network. While centralized firewalls are used against attacks coming from outside a network, distributed firewalls are considered for inside attacks from internal networks such as wireless access and VPN tunnel. Distributed firewalls use policies, which are stated by rules, to find anomalous packets. However, such static rules may be incomplete. In this case, by monitoring firewall logs, the anomalies can be detected. Such logs become big when networks have high traffic, but their hidden knowledge contains valuable information about existing anomalies. In this paper, to detect the anomalies, we extract patterns from big data logs of distributed firewalls using data mining and machine learning. Summary: Several autonomous traffic monitoring systems have been created as a result of the growing number of vehicles in urban areas. Traffic surveillance systems that use roadside cameras, in particular, are becoming widely used for traffic management. For an efficient traffic control and vehicle navigation system, accurate traffic flow information must be obtained based on the vehicles detected in surveillance videos. However, vehicles of various scales are difficult to spot in traffic surveillance videos due to the presence of barricades, other vehicles, and the impact of poor lighting. Also, adverse weather conditions like snow, fog, and heavy rain diminish the visual quality of the surveillance footage. This paper proposes multi‐scale dense nested deep CNN (MSDN‐DCNN) and regional search grasshopper optimization algorithm (RS‐GOA) framework to accurately detect the vehicles, estimate the traffic flow, and find the optimal path with less travel time. First, the surveillance videos are pre‐processed, which includes frame conversion, redundancy removal, and image enhancement. The pre‐processed frames are given as input to the MSDN‐DCNN for multi‐scale vehicle detection. The detected results are used for vehicle counting and estimating the traffic flow. Finally, the optimal path is chosen based on the traffic flow information by using the RS‐GOA algorithm. The performance of the proposed method is compared with the existing vehicle detection and path selection techniques. The results illustrate that the proposed Deep CNN‐RS‐GOA framework has improved performance with high detection accuracy (91.03%), high speed (53.9 fps), less running time (1,000 ms), less travel time, and faster convergence. Identifying early special traffic events is crucial for efficient traffic control management. If there are a sufficient number of vehicles equipped with automatic event detection and report gadgets, this enables a more rapid response to special events, including road debris, unexpected pedestrians, accidents, and malfunctioning vehicles. To address the needs of such a system and service, we propose a framework for an in-vehicle module-based special traffic event and emergency detection and safe driving monitoring service, which utilizes the modified ResNet classification algorithm to improve the efficiency of traffic management on highways. Due to the fact that this type of classification problem has scarcely been proposed, we have adapted various classification algorithms and corresponding datasets specifically designed for detecting special traffic events. By utilizing datasets containing data on road debris and malfunctioning or crashed vehicles obtained from Korean highways, we demonstrate the feasibility of our algorithms. Our main contributions encompass a thorough adaptation of various deep-learning algorithms and class definitions aimed at detecting actual emergencies on highways. We have also developed a dataset and detection algorithm specifically tailored for this task. The rapid development of urbanization in China has contributed to traffic events, such as traffic accidents and delays. It is difficult to detect and resolve highway traffic congestion in a timely manner using traditional methods because they are slow, require a large number of workers, and require the installation of a large amount of monitoring equipment. Therefore, it is imperative to introduce advanced technology to address these challenges. Recently, deep learning technology has made significant breakthroughs and has been widely applied to various fields with satisfactory results. Deep learning is among the most important technologies for the detection and evaluation of traffic congestion, enabling the accurate detection of the state of the expressway network's traffic congestion, the evaluation of traffic congestion, and the prediction of possible traffic congestion. This enables management to formulate traffic dredging strategies in advance to prevent the negative impact of traffic congestion on normal traffic flow. This paper proposes a framework based on deep learning for next-generation highway traffic management. This framework selects traffic congestion indicators to construct an index model, and then constructs a deep learning model based on self-coding. It predicts and classifies highway traffic environment data and excavates sample data based on the characteristics of traffic parameters. As soon as traffic data were classified, a prediction model based on SoftMax was established to detect and predict highway traffic congestion. We conducted a traffic congestion analysis of the Shanghai expressway network based on the speed performance data obtained from the China Traffic Management Bureau. As a result of their research, we developed an index to measure highway traffic congestion. For traffic control and management organizations to function effectively, it is crucial to have an accurate and clear picture of traffic network operations. We evaluated the proposed framework using data gathered from highway monitoring scenes, and the results indicated that 98.6% of the data could be correctly detected. Using the prediction model based on SoftMax for expressway vehicles during peak hours, the accuracy was 92%, and the misjudgment rate was 8%. This study demonstrates that detecting and evaluating the state of highway traffic environments using deep learning has high accuracy, can be applied to actual highway traffic systems, and is extremely useful for detecting highway congestion. The real-time vehicular traffic system is an integral part of the urban vehicular traffic system, which provides effective traffic signal control for a large multifaceted traffic network and is a highly challenging distributed control problem. Coordinating vehicular traffic enables the network model to deliver an efficient service flow. Consider that there are four lanes of vehicular traffic in this situation, allowing parallel vehicle movements to occur without causing an accident. In this instance, the vehicular system's control parameters are time and vehicle volume. In this work, vehicular traffic flow is examined, and an algorithm to estimate vehicle waiting time in each direction is estimated. The effectiveness of the proposed vehicle traffic signal distribution control system by comparing the experimental results with a real-time vehicular traffic system is verified. High quality road infrastructure is essential to support economic growth for any region. For South Africa’s landlocked economic hub 79% of goods are transported using roads infrastructure. Protection of the road infrastructure is implemented by means of overload control monitoring at traffic control centres (TCCs) on freight corridors. Statistics collected from TCC operations indicate that 75% to 85% of statically weighed vehicles are legally loaded, with the implication that unnecessary time was wasted for these vehicles. This paper therefore proposes an algorithm, called the intelligent weigh-in-motion (IWIM) algorithm, with the purpose to decrease static weighing of vehicles by implementing data sharing between TCCs on the freight corridor, combined with intelligent interpretation of this data. The selected algorithm was chosen after testing multiple artificial intelligence (AI) models (logistic regression, random forest tree, and artificial neural network) to achieve the best performance to decrease static weighing of vehicles while not increasing the number of overloaded vehicles allowed to proceed on the corridor. The best performing model to differentiate between overloaded and legal vehicles, random forest tree, achieved an average improvement of 65,83% in terms of vehicles to be statically weighed when compared to the current rule-based system employed at TCCs. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be used to monitor traffic in a variety of settings, including security, traffic surveillance, and traffic control. Numerous academics have been drawn to this topic because of the challenges and the large variety of applications. This paper proposes a new and efficient vehicle detection and tracking system that is based on road extraction and identifying objects on it. It is inspired by existing detection systems that comprise stationary data collectors such as induction loops and stationary cameras that have a limited field of view and are not mobile. The goal of this study is to develop a method that first extracts the region of interest (ROI), then finds and tracks the items of interest. The suggested system is divided into six stages. The photos from the obtained dataset are appropriately georeferenced to their actual locations in the first phase, after which they are all co-registered. The ROI, or road and its objects, are retrieved using the GrabCut method in the second phase. The third phase entails data preparation. The segmented images’ noise is eliminated using Gaussian blur, after which the images are changed to grayscale and forwarded to the following stage for additional morphological procedures. The YOLOv3 algorithm is used in the fourth step to find any automobiles in the photos. Following that, the Kalman filter and centroid tracking are used to perform the tracking of the detected cars. The Lucas-Kanade method is then used to perform the trajectory analysis on the vehicles. The suggested model is put to the test and assessed using the Vehicle Aerial Imaging from Drone (VAID) dataset. Aerial vehicle detection has significant applications in aerial surveillance and traffic control. The pictures captured by the UAV are characterized by many tiny objects and vehicles obscuring each other, significantly increasing the detection challenge. In the research of detecting vehicles in aerial images, there is a widespread problem of missed and false detections. Therefore, we customize a model based on YOLOv5 to be more suitable for detecting vehicles in aerial images. Firstly, we add one additional prediction head to detect smaller-scale objects. Furthermore, to keep the original features involved in the training process of the model, we introduce a Bidirectional Feature Pyramid Network (BiFPN) to fuse the feature information from various scales. Lastly, Soft-NMS (soft non-maximum suppression) is employed as a prediction frame filtering method, alleviating the missed detection due to the close alignment of vehicles. The experimental findings on the self-made dataset in this research indicate that compared with YOLOv5s, the mAP@0.5 and mAP@0.5:0.95 of YOLOv5-VTO increase by 3.7% and 4.7%, respectively, and the two indexes of accuracy and recall are also improved. Effective accident detection and traffic flow forecasting are of great importance for quick respond, impact elimination and intelligent control of the traffic flow consisting of autonomous vehicles. This paper proposes a traffic accident detection method for connected and automated transport systems by conducting a grid-based parameter extracting and SVC-based traffic state classification. Allowing for the dynamic spread of traffic flow over time, from upstream to downstream and from accident lanes to other lanes, a spatiotemporal Markov model is established to predict the evolution of traffic flow after accident by introducing the grid as state detection unit and fitting the spatiotemporal evolution with the parameter space mean speed to match the need of both detection accuracy and monitoring scope. Compared with actual accident data, the validation results indicate that the proposed methods present a good performance in accident detection with the accident detection rate as 87.72% and a higher precision rate than both SVM (support vector machine) and ANN (artificial neural network) models in traffic flow prediction. With the active traffic accident identification and dynamic traffic flow prediction, it is beneficial to shorten detection time, reduce possible impacts of traffic accidents and carbon emissions from congestion. The methods can be implied to traffic state recognition and traffic flow prediction, which is one of the significant sections of connected and automated transport systems, and serve as references for accident handling and urban traffic management. Work zone speed is one of the most important factors in road construction safety management. This work presents a computer vision based technique designed to measure lane-specific individual vehicle speed using existing traffic monitoring cameras and computers. The resulted speeds support the influence analysis of factors including traffic control, lane positions, and construction activity. Object detection (YOLOv5) and tracking (Deep-SORT) algorithms are combined to track the vehicles. In particular, 21 days' worth of road construction videos are collected from a pole-mounted traffic monitoring camera operated by the Texas A&M University Transportation Services. Based on the object detection results, a novel construction activity inference technique is developed to approximate the times when construction workers are present. Based on this time separation, the vehicle speeds with and without the presence of construction activity are compared. The proposed framework is able to measure speeds with an error ranging from 0 to 6.4 kilometers per hour (KPH). Detailed analysis of this video data suggests that traffic control with barrels in the median work zone lowers the average speed (for all vehicles) by 15 KPH. The lane adjacent to the work zone also has higher speed variation than the other lanes. The construction activity speed comparisons show when the traffic is slow (possibly traffic after a red light), the difference is statistically significant with a p-value ranging from 0.01 to 0.03. When the traffic is fast (possibly traffic encountering a green signal as they approached the nearby intersection) construction activity has no significant effect on the work zone speeds. The proposed CV technique is a reliable and cheap method to measure lane-specific work zone speeds. The derived measurements support detailed safety analysis. As technology continues to develop, computer vision (CV) applications are becoming increasingly widespread in the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) context. These applications are developed to improve the efficiency of transportation systems, increase their level of intelligence, and enhance traffic safety. Advances in CV play an important role in solving problems in the fields of traffic monitoring and control, incident detection and management, road usage pricing, and road condition monitoring, among many others, by providing more effective methods. This survey examines CV applications in the literature, the machine learning and deep learning methods used in ITS applications, the applicability of computer vision applications in ITS contexts, the advantages these technologies offer and the difficulties they present, and future research areas and trends, with the goal of increasing the effectiveness, efficiency, and safety level of ITS. The present review, which brings together research from various sources, aims to show how computer vision techniques can help transportation systems to become smarter by presenting a holistic picture of the literature on different CV applications in the ITS context. With the rapid development of internet technology and mobile devices, massive streaming data of spatiotemporal information is available for real-time data mining. Outlier detection is playing as one of the most important analysis tasks for trajectory stream processing, such as traffic control and urban planning. Existing work about this issue can be divided into two main categories: individual outlier detection (IOD) and group outlier detection (GOD). IOD focuses on detecting an individual trajectory outlier generated by a single moving object (e.g., an over-speeding car), while GOD aims to detect a group outlier generated by various moving objects (e.g., a group of cars influenced by a traffic jam). However, existing studies only support one of them and cannot comprehensively understand the traffic conditions by combining both of them. To this end, we propose a novel framework for real-time urban traffic outlier detection (RUTOD) in this paper. RUTOD contains IOD based on current traffic conditions and GOD according to historical data. In addition, we adopt a street-based trajectory division to accelerate investigation. Vehicle classification is a challenging task in the area of image processing. It involves the classification of various vehicles based on their color, model, and make. A distinctive variety of vehicles belonging to various model categories have been developed in the automobile industry, which has made it necessary to establish a compact system that can classify vehicles within a complex model group. A well-established vehicle classification system has applications in security, vehicle monitoring in traffic cameras, route analysis in autonomous vehicles, and traffic control systems. In this paper, a hybrid model based on the integration of a pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and an evolutionary feature selection model is proposed for vehicle classification. The proposed model performs classification of eight different vehicle categories including sports cars, luxury cars and hybrid power-house SUVs. The used in this work is derived from Stanford car dataset that contains almost 196 cars and vehicle classes. After performing appropriate data preparation and preprocessing steps, feature learning and extraction is carried out using pre-trained VGG16 first that learns and extracts deep features from the set of input images. These features are then taken out of the last fully connected layer of VGG16, and feature optimization phase is carried out using evolution-based nature-inspired optimization model Genetic Algorithm (GA). The paper's main aim is to present the impact on the city's road traffic generated by the Port of Gdynia's operations and propose the optimal solution for transport network development around the port. Firstly, the authors demonstrate a case study determining the impact of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) generated by port facilities on local traffic. To this end, the average travel time of cars in the network on selected measurement sections is conditioned on the varying number of HGVs generated by the port. Next, based on the data obtained from the traffic monitoring system, PTV Vissim software is used as a modelling tool to analyse and assess the impact on local traffic. Finally, considering the analysis' results, the vulnerability of the transport network is discussed. The optimal solution for the transport network around the port's area is proposed. Road safety is a major global concern, as millions of lives are lost every year because of road accidents. Towards an effort to increase road safety, several Internet-of-Vehicle systems have been developed over the last years in order to better monitor vehicle and driver behavior and issue warnings that effectively prevent life-threatening accidents. These systems face a number of challenges including connectivity issues and high installation and/or maintenance costs. The current work introduces the ODOS2020 system, an integrated Internet-of-Vehicles system aiming to increase road safety. The system comprises several On-the-Road Units for vehicle-related data collection from affordable, energy-efficient magnetometers and calculation of critical parameters, such as each passing vehicle's speed and direction. A Road-Side Unit accumulates data from the On-the-Road Units, sends data to a cloud infrastructure for further analysis and sends dedicated warnings to the drivers based on their road behavior and/or specific traffic conditions via a dedicated Human–Machine Interface. The overall system architecture and the key features of its modules are being presented, as well as the evaluation results of specially designed tests performed in an actual motorway under real use case scenarios. The evaluation results showed both a very good technical performance of the system and a high level of user acceptance. This in turn means that the system can be employed for effective traffic control and road accident avoidance via monitoring of critical vehicle parameters and early warning of the drivers based on their and other drivers' behavior, road conditions and real-time, unpredictable events. Deep reinforcement learning provides a new approach to solving complex signal optimization problems at intersections. Earlier studies were limited to traditional traffic detection techniques, and the obtained traffic information was not accurate. With the advanced in technology, we can obtain highly accurate information on the traffic states by advanced detector technology. This provides an accurate source of data for deep reinforcement learning. There are many intersections in the urban network. To successfully apply deep reinforcement learning in a situation closer to reality, we need to consider the problem of extending the knowledge gained from the training to new scenarios. This study used advanced sensor technology as a data source to explore the variation pattern of state space under different traffic scenarios. It analyzes the relationship between the traffic demand and the actual traffic states. The model learned more from a more comprehensive state space of traffic. This model was successful applied to new traffic scenarios without additional training. Compared our proposed model with the popular SAC signal control model, the result shows that the average delay of the DQN model is 5.13 s and the SAC model is 6.52 s. The three research topics, ship collision risk assessment, ship traffic hotspot detection and prediction, and collision-avoidance based ship path planning, are vital for next-generation vessel traffic management and monitoring systems. The system development is closely related to big data analytics and artificial intelligence for restricted waters. This study, therefore, aims to analyse the state-of-the art of these three topics over the latest decade, identify research gaps, and shed light on future research avenues. To achieve these three objectives, we critically and systematically review related articles that were published during the period between 2011 and 2021. We believe that this comprehensive and critical literature review would have a significant and profound impact on the formal safety assessment and vessel traffic management, and monitoring studies because it is not only an extension but also an essential continuity work of the literature review on maritime waterway risk assessment and prediction, as well as ship path guidance for ship collision risk mitigation in accordance with current automation vessels development and modern intelligent port construction. The intersection management system can increase traffic capacity, vehicle safety, and the smoothness of all vehicle movement. Platoons of connected vehicles (CVs) use communication technologies to share information with each other and with infrastructures. In this paper, we proposed a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) model that applies to vehicle platooning at an isolated signalized intersection with partial detection. Moreover, we identified hyperparameters and tested the system with different numbers of vehicles (1, 2, and 3) in the platoon. To compare the effectiveness of the proposed model, we implemented two benchmark options, actuated traffic signal control (ATSC) and max pressure (MP). The experimental results demonstrated that the DRL model has many outstanding advantages compared to other models. Through the learning process, the average waiting time of vehicles in the DRL method was improved by 20% and 28% compared with the ATSC and MP options. Predicting spatiotemporal congestion situations of a traffic network is a prerequisite for urban traffic control. This study proposes a spatiotemporal traffic congestion situation prediction method based on the recurrent gated unit-convolutional neural network (GRU-CNN). Considering the time and space attributes of traffic data, the third-order tensor of the traffic data is extracted from the time domain, and the GRU is used to predict the traffic flow parameters of the traffic network. Then, the third-order tensor of multisource spatiotemporal traffic data is compressed into traffic data images and combined with the spatial structure. The feature extraction technology of a CNN is used to extract and identify the traffic network congestion features. Actual urban traffic network data are selected for model verification. The multistep prediction of the traffic flow parameters effectively ensures prediction accuracy. The proposed model is trained by the actual classification dataset. The prediction results of the test set demonstrate the model's reliability. Based on predicting the traffic parameters of the network, this model can give a highly accurate judgment of the traffic situation for the entire network. Detecting and counting on road vehicles is a key task in intelligent transport management and surveillance systems. The applicability lies both in urban and highway traffic monitoring and control, particularly in difficult weather and traffic conditions. In the past, the task has been performed through data acquired from sensors and conventional image processing toolbox. However, with the advent of emerging deep learning based smart computer vision systems the task has become computationally efficient and reliable. The data acquired from road mounted surveillance cameras can be used to train models which can detect and track on road vehicles for smart traffic analysis and handling problems such as traffic congestion particularly in harsh weather conditions where there are poor visibility issues because of low illumination and blurring. Different vehicle detection algorithms focusing the same issue deal only with on or two specific conditions. In this research, we address detecting vehicles in a scene in multiple weather scenarios including haze, dust and sandstorms, snowy and rainy weather both in day and nighttime. The proposed architecture uses CSPDarknet53 as baseline architecture modified with spatial pyramid pooling (SPP-NET) layer and reduced Batch Normalization layers. We also augment the DAWN Dataset with different techniques including Hue, Saturation, Exposure, Brightness, Darkness, Blur and Noise. Smart cities have been widely investigated, and several algorithms, techniques, and protocols have recently been developed to serve smart city environments. Intelligent traffic management is one of the main research fields in this area. It aims to control and monitor the traffic over downtown and highway scenarios. The real-time traffic characteristics on road networks highly affect safety conditions and driving behaviors. Detecting hazardous traffic conditions and congested areas early helps drivers make the best decision to avoid dangerous situations. After extensive training, machine learning algorithms are mainly used for prediction in this field. In the intelligent traffic control target, trained machines are beneficial in obtaining instant and accurate predictions regarding traffic congestion levels and their distributions. Several parameters control the efficiency of the selected machines. This includes the dataset quality, the regression algorithm's parameters, and how they have been tuned. In this work, we first create high-quality datasets representing the moving vehicles for different main roads in various countries, including Bank St in Canada, North Rodeo Drive (NRD) in Los Angeles, USA, Queen Rania Al Abdullah (QRA) road in Jordan, and Sheikh Zayed Road (SZR) in Saudi Arabia. Then, we test the most popular regression algorithms and evaluate their performance in terms of temporal prediction of traffic characteristics and traffic congestion in different geographical road scenarios. We optimized these regression algorithms and tuned the used parameters using the grid search approach. After that, more advanced metaheuristic optimization algorithms were used to improve the prediction accuracy of the selected machine. Experimentally, we have proved the enhancements in predicting traffic characteristics for the tested road scenarios. Both approaches show enhanced results compared to using the regression algorithm without tuning the parameters. It shows advanced results for both approaches for the coefficient of determination measure, named R squared (R 2), with approximately 0.07, 0.04, and 0.08 enhanced values for Bank St., NRD, and SZR roads, respectively. Accurately monitoring road traffic state is crucial for various applications, including travel time prediction, traffic control, and traffic safety. However, the lack of sensors often results in incomplete traffic state data, making it challenging to obtain reliable information for decision-making. This paper proposes a novel method for imputing traffic state data using Gaussian processes (GP) to address this issue. We propose a kernel rotation re-parametrization scheme that transforms a standard isotropic GP kernel into an anisotropic kernel, which can better model the congestion propagation in traffic flow data. The model parameters can be estimated by statistical inference using data from sparse probe vehicles or loop detectors. Moreover, the rotated GP method provides statistical uncertainty quantification for the imputed traffic state, making it more reliable. We also extend our approach to a multi-output GP, which allows for simultaneously estimating the traffic state for multiple lanes. We evaluate our method using real-world traffic data from the Next Generation simulation (NGSIM) and HighD programs, along with simulated data representing a traffic bottleneck scenario. Considering current and future mixed traffic of connected vehicles (CVs) and human-driven vehicles (HVs), we experiment with the traffic state estimation (TSE) scheme from 5% to 50% available trajectories, mimicking different CV penetration rates in a mixed traffic environment. We also test the traffic state estimation when traffic flow information is obtained from loop detectors. Noise has emerged as a leading environmental problem and is an underestimated threat. The most significant source of noise pollution is road traffic. Road traffic noise problem has reached alarming levels. This proves the severity and necessity of mitigating the traffic noise from every delicate corner possible. Noise monitoring is required to check the noise levels and effectiveness of control methods implemented. Road traffic noise control can be exercised with the help of prediction models. This paper presents the traffic noise status of developing countries and a quantitative review and comparison of traffic noise prediction models developed by researchers for various cities. Findings suggest that most of the researchers have used regression modelling and use of evolutionary computing methods like genetic algorithm, fuzzy systems, and neural networks to develop traffic noise prediction model is lacking. The effect of many important variables affecting traffic noise like pavement type, vegetation along roads, road surface roughness, and gradient still needs to be studied. Further, studies are required to measure in vehicle noise levels on same roads to compare the noise levels tolerated by residents, road users, and the commuters; this will help in formulating traffic noise regulations. In recent years, the sharp increase in the number of residential motor vehicles and non-motorized vehicles has led to a huge challenge in the intelligent control of urban road traffic operation status. To address the problems of low accuracy of small target detection in complex traffic scenes and the difficulty of balancing the accuracy and detection speed of multiple targets, we propose a deep learning-based Semantic interpolation target detection network SI-SSD based on feature pyramid network FPN and feature graph fusion method, and transfer it to target detection in complex traffic scenes. Shallow feature maps have multi-edge information and deep feature maps have high semantic information. With this idea in mind, the high-resolution shallow feature layer Conv4_3 for the detection of small targets and the deep feature layer Conv7_2 with rich semantic information in SSD network are fused, so as to enhance the sensitivity of the network to the feature information of small targets and improve the network's ability to detect small targets in complex traffic scenarios. The experimental results show that the improved SI-SSD network model has good robustness in the detection of relatively small targets, which can ensure the detection speed and improve the accuracy of detection and recognition significantly. Tests of the data sets UA-DETRAC and VOC2007 show that in the detection of relatively small targets such as Motorbike and Pedestrian, the accuracy is 89.3% and 86.7%, respectively, and the mean average precesion (mAP) is 89.05%. Compared with other target detection networks based on deep learning, the average accuracy of all types of target detection is improved by 4%, and the detection speed is maintained at about 32 fps. The performance of the traffic system can drastically drop when nonrecurrent congestion caused by incidents occurs. Early detection and clearing of traffic incidents will enable the mitigation of the congestion and early restoration of normal traffic conditions. The research in this paper utilized the vehicle information from the recent technological advancement in transportation systems, connected vehicles (CV), and loop-detector information for nonconnected vehicles (NCVs) and developed a novel algorithm to (1) control traffic signals for normal traffic conditions in the absence of incidents, (2) detect traffic incidents using CV/NCV information, and (3) control traffic signals during the occurrence and dissipation of incidents. All the 3 strategies were integrated into one algorithm, which runs as per the real-time traffic conditions, in the presence or absence of incidents. Space-mean speeds of the vehicles on nonincident lanes and throughput maximization criteria were taken as the indicators for the activation of specific signal timings directed at the incident-affected approach. Diverse incident scenarios were tested on a four-legged isolated intersection using the VISSIM simulation tool. Incident detection results showed a higher detection rate and lower mean detection time at higher CV penetration and higher traffic volumes, and at the incident locations nearer to the stop-line. The proposed incident-responsive signal control strategy at 40% and higher CV penetration showed better performance over EPICS adaptive signal control solution, in reducing average travel time delay and the average number of stops per vehicle. A recent line of research focuses on crowd density estimation from RGB images for a variety of applications, for example, surveillance and traffic flow control. The performance drops dramatically for low-quality images, such as occlusion, or poor light conditions. However, people are equipped with various wireless devices, allowing the received signals to be easily collected at the base station. As such, another line of research utilizes received signals for crowd counting. Nevertheless, received signals offer only information regarding the number of people, while an accurate density map cannot be derived. As unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are now treated as flying base stations and equipped with cameras, we make the first attempt to leverage both RGB images and received signals for crowd density estimation on UAVs. Specifically, we propose a novel network to effectively fuse the RGB images and received signal strength (RSS) information. Moreover, we design a new loss function that considers the uncertainty from RSS and makes the prediction consistent with the received signals. Experimental results show that the proposed method successfully helps break the limit of traditional crowd density estimation methods and achieves state-of-the-art performance. The identification of the position of rail vehicles plays a crucial role in the control of rail traffic. Available, up-to-date information on the position of vehicles allows us to efficiently deal with selected traffic situations where the position of vehicles is very important. The main objective of this article is to introduce (i) a concept of a solution for identification of the current position of rail vehicles based on the worldwide-recognized system of the GNSS with the use of an original railway network data model, and (ii) the use of this concept as supplementary support for the dispatcher control of rail traffic on regional lines. The solution was based on an original, multilayer rail network data model supporting (i) the identification of rail vehicle position and (ii) novel algorithms evaluating the mutual positions of several trains while detecting the selected crisis situation. In addition, original algorithms that enable automatic network model-building (on the database server level) directly from the official railway infrastructure database were developed. The verification of the proposed solutions (using rail traffic simulations) was focused on the evaluation of (i) the changing mutual positions (distances) of trains on the railway network, (ii) the detection of nonstandard or crisis traffic situations, and (iii) the results of the calculations of necessary braking distances of trains for stopping and collision avoidance. The above verification demonstrated the good applicability of the proposed solutions for the potential deployment within supplementary software support for real traffic control. The described concept of the supplementary support determined for railway traffic control (using the localization of trains by means of the GNSS) is intended mainly for regional, single-rail lines. This type of line is very often not sufficiently equipped with standard signaling and interlocking equipment to ensure the necessary traffic safety. Therefore, when deploying this support, the new algorithms for the automatic detection of critical traffic situations represent a significant potential contribution to increasing operational safety. Network traffic classification is an increasingly significant prerequisite for network management. An accurate traffic classifier can contribute to traffic engineering, traffic intrusion detection and user behavior analysis. Recently, deep learning (DL) has attracted considerable attention for traffic classification due to its excellent learning ability without the need for handcrafted feature engineering or privacy invasion. However, most DL-based traffic classification solutions mainly focus on improving the identification performance, with no regard for the computational and memory burden caused by a large model size or data redundancy. Motivated by the above gaps, we elaborate on the preprocessing of raw traffic data and investigate a lightweight traffic classifier. Specifically, we design a preprocessing approach to convert raw traffic data into available datasets for deep learning based traffic classifiers, which tailors raw traffic data as training datasets by resolving its structure and content and pruning redundant information. Thanks to its ability to focus on key information, attention mechanism is introduced to design an attention-based long short-term memory (LSTM) model for traffic classification, termed the ABL-TC. ABL-TC can effectively identify global dependencies between the input and the output with a limited number of important raw features, which can contribute to learning key information to identify various traffic types. Extensive experiments on real-world public datasets show that the ABL-TC outperforms state-of-the-art approaches in terms of various metrics for recognizing traffic categories while remaining competitive in terms of time and memory efficiency. Intelligent transportation infrastructure has gained significant research attention recently. In this paper, an innovative sensor network of smart road stud (SRS) is developed to enhance traffic detection infrastructure characterized by its functionality in traffic data collection, long/short range wireless data transmission, self-sustained power supply, and remote custom controlled lighting-based traffic guidance. Compared to the traditional traffic detectors and road studs, SRS nodes are installed on lane lines instead of lane center to enable the additional applications besides the detection function, such as traffic monitoring, congestion warning, routing guidance, and so on. SRS detects vehicles based on three-axis geomagnetic sensors. A vehicle detection algorithm is proposed correspondingly under different operation scenarios to count vehicles in two adjacent lanes. Its detecting accuracy can be further improved by a sensor network of multiple SRSs working cooperatively. Field test results show that the vehicle detection accuracy based on the SRS network is about 98% per lane, which is the same level as the commercial detector installed in center of lane, even under the non-standard driving behaviors such as crossing lane line. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) refer to a group of battery-operated tiny sensor nodes having vast application areas in daily use. These are spatially dispersed and dedicated wireless sensor nodes for observing and recording the different parameter and physical conditions of the surroundings. There is a recent advancement in the field of network connectivity and computations in WSNs. The key functions of WSNs are a data extraction and to transmit the extracted data to the server placed at an isolated location. Various types of WSNs like underground underwater, terrestrial, and multimedia networks get applications domains such as in industrial automation, traffic monitoring and control medical device monitoring, and many other areas. Large-scale congestion can lead to traffic paralysis, which severely hampers the flow of vehicles and disrupts the normal functioning of urban traffic. Traffic optimization strategies can effectively improve the performance of road networks, but often ignore the impact of regional traffic conditions and equity. This paper presents a novel traffic strategy to solve regional traffic congestion in large cities, particularly focusing on mixed traffic scenarios of connected and non-connected vehicles. The proposed method involves monitoring the traffic condition of the congestion warning community and adjusting the internal access flow within each region. The problem is formulated as a Stackelberg game, with traffic policymakers and road users as the key players. The upper layer aims to control traffic access by issuing a community warning index, with the objective of minimizing congestion warning conditions within the community. This information is then disseminated to connected vehicles which utilize it to generate personalized route guidance, while non-connected vehicles remain unaffected. The lower-level objective is to allocate vehicles in the transportation network in a user-optimal manner. To solve the bi-level programming model, the paper introduces a variable neighborhood search approach based on graph theory. The Frank-Wolfe algorithm is used to solve the lower-level model, with a penalty function introduced to transform the constrained traffic assignment problem (TAP) into an unconstrained TAP. The proposed method is applied using the data of Beijing urban road network and a sensitivity analysis is conducted to examine the impacts of critical parameters, such as regional partitioning and mixed traffic proportion. Monitoring traffic dynamics at both link and network levels is vital for effective traffic management and control in urban road networks. Traffic monitoring at the network level, though, is an extremely challenging task due to the amount of data (and consequently sensors) needed to represent a good coverage of the network traffic dynamics. This has motivated researchers to investigate where to locate sensors (e.g. loop detectors) within a network to capture the so-called Reduced Network Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (NMFD). The existing approaches for reduced NMFD estimation have presented limitations, because of the reliance on solely traffic flow characteristics or single topological features. In response, in this paper, a framework has been proposed to take into account the simultaneous impact of topological and traffic flow features for the estimation of reduced NMFD. Contrary to existing works in literature, which have mainly focused on the loading period, this work considers both loading and unloading periods. The presented framework deploys regression models to identify the set of critical links within the network. The efficiency of the presented method has been validated under both single and multi-reservoir settings and has been compared to two methods that solely consider traffic characteristics. Our findings reveal that the proposed method demonstrates superior performance, particularly when dealing with low coverage rates of loop detectors (e.g. 1%). Moreover, results show that during the recovery period, traffic characteristics (e.g. queue distribution) play a more important role in estimating the NMFD. Noise and air pollution are among the most important problems and challenges in urban environments. Noise can cause several problems in functioning within urban settlements and may result in a variety of health problems. Continuous monitoring, prevention, and active work on solving these problems are in the focus of research communities, local and national agencies and organizations, and many international organizations. Traffic noise on city roads has been identified as one of the major problems in urban settlements. Fortunately, it can be monitored and controlled in a way that can reduce its level and negative effects. One of the most effective and cheapest ways to monitor and control traffic noise is to use wireless sensor networks, IoT technology, and cloud-based architectures. This article presents an approach in designing urban traffic noise monitoring system based on LoRaWAN and microservices oriented architecture supported with open-source hardware and software solutions. Design of the system includes planning LoRaWAN network and development of the IoT system layered architecture. Methods for traffic routing and rerouting in urban areas, based on experiments that uses Dijkstra and Floyd–Warshall algorithms are presented. The system implementation and evaluation of the proposed routing modifications are presented in the case of the city of Zrenjanin in Serbia. Purpose. To increase output of traffic network while deriving new dependencies of transport flow characteristics upon control law parameters and using them to develop an algorithm to automate a process of the transport flow coordinated regulation within towns and cities. Methodology. The aggregated simulation model, describing processes of road traffic formation within a local section of urban traffic system, is used for the analysis of dependencies to assess quality of transport flow control upon correcting conditions being parameters of traffic cycles within intersections. The abovementioned should involve a PID controller as well as a negative feedback idea to automate control of the road traffi c process. In this context, control criterion is applied to determine critical flow intensity if a traffic jam occurs. The criterion makes it possible to identify changes in the road traffic nature. To determine the optimal settings of the PID controller for diff erent stocks of the stability control system, the standard deviation of the controlled variable from the set value and the mean static control error are defined. The derived dependencies of control quality criteria upon a law of flow regulation have helped develop a new algorithm of the coordinated automated road traffi c control within a local section of urban traffic section using standard control action. Simulation experiments made it possible to assess efficiency of the proposed algorithm of control compared with available ones applied in terms of different road conditions. Findings. As a part of the studies, algorithm of the coordinated automated road traffic has been developed. It helps support maximum output of road systems while monitoring changes in the traffic environment characteristics. Originality. For the first time, dependencies of assessment criteria of traffic flow control upon the parameters of a law of flow intensity regulation have been identified if maximum output of road systems is provided. The dependencies have helped substantiate optimum control criteria for different road conditions while automating a process of coordinated traffic flow regulation within local section of urban traffic network. In complex urban intersection scenarios, due to heavy traffic and signal control, there are many slow-moving or temporarily stopped vehicles behind the stop lines. At these intersections, it is difficult to extract traffic parameters, such as delay and queue length, based on vehicle detection and tracking due to the dense and severe occlusion of vehicles. In this study, a novel background subtraction algorithm based on sparse representation is proposed to detect the traffic foreground at complex intersections to obtain traffic parameters. By establishing a novel background dictionary update model, the proposed method solves the problem that the background is easily contaminated by slow-moving or temporarily stopped vehicles and therefore cannot obtain the complete traffic foreground. Using the real-world urban traffic videos and the PV video sequences of i -LIDS, we first compare the proposed method with other detection methods based on sparse representation. Then, the proposed method is compared with other commonly used traffic foreground detection models in different urban intersection traffic scenarios. The experimental results show that the proposed method performs well in keeping the background model being unpolluted from slow-moving or temporarily stopped vehicles and has a good performance in both qualitative and quantitative evaluations. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology is a key component of an autonomous vehicle’s sensing system. It also has the potential to be used at the roadside as a major infrastructure-based detection for connected and autonomous traffic infrastructure systems, as well as for the general purpose of traffic data collection and performance evaluation. Lane and movement-based traffic volume data collection is a basic function of roadside traffic sensing systems. The accuracy of volume detection is mainly impacted by occlusion for most of the advanced traffic sensing technologies, such as LiDAR, video, and radar. This paper presents research results to quantify the influence of occlusion on LiDAR systems’ traffic volume detection in different traffic demand scenarios. A method for automatic identification and classification of LiDAR specific occlusion was first developed based on the inherent characteristics of LiDAR sensors, which can report occlusion ratios of roadside LiDAR data. Then, the study was extended to accommodate all traffic demand scenarios, traffic levels of service (LOS A to E), and different truck compositions (5% to 30%) by integrating the developed method and traffic simulation. Lastly, a comprehensive case study first verified the accuracy of the simulation results using field data collected from two testbeds, and then at the third testbed, a lane and movement-based traffic volume study was demonstrated. The practical significance of this paper is to help traffic engineers making informed decisions when considering LiDAR as their choice of sensing technology in the field from two aspects: (1) the quantitative relationship between expected occlusion rate and resulted detection accuracy under various traffic conditions; (2) lessons learned from the pilot field implementation on LiDAR, installation strategy, data storage, and communication. Accurate identification of ships is the key technology of intelligent transportation in water. At the same time, it also provides a judgment basis for water traffic safety control. This paper proposed a detection method of ships in water based on improved You Only Look Once version 3 (YOLOv3), which is called Feature Attention, Feature Enhancement YOLOv3 (AE-YOLOv3). The feature attention module was constructed by introducing the attention mechanism, which was embedded in Darknet-53 for feature recalibration, which improved the feature extraction ability of the model in the complex navigable background. For the problem of insufficient semantic information of low-level features in the feature fusion process, a feature enhancement module was constructed and applied to the feature fusion part to enhance the receptive field size of the corresponding feature layer and the correlation degree of feature extraction network. Experiments were carried out on the public SeaShips dataset. Experiments show that the detection accuracy is as high as 98.72%, which is better than that of other mainstream ship identification models, fully verifying the superiority of this method in the detection of waterborne traffic ships. Economic and technological development has increased the amount, density and complexity of maritime traffic, which has resulted in new challenges. One challenge is conforming to the distinct evasion manoeuvres required by vessels entering into near-collision situations (NCSs). Existing rules are vague and do not precisely dictate which, when and how collision avoidance manoeuvres (CAMs) should be executed. The automatic identification system (AIS) is widely used for vessel monitoring and traffic control. This paper presents an efficient, scalable method for processing large-scale raw AIS data using the closest point of approach (CPA) framework. NCSs are identified to create a database of historical traffic data. Important features describing CAMs are defined, estimated and analysed. Applications on a high-quality real-world data set show promising results for a subset of the identified situations. Future applications may play a significant role in the maritime regulatory framework, navigation protocol compliance evaluation, risk assessment, automatic collision avoidance, and algorithm design and testing for autonomous vessels. To effectively manage the traffic flow in order to reduce traffic congestion, it is necessary to know the volumes and quantitative indicators of this flow. Various detection methods are known for detecting a vehicle in a lane, which, in turn, have their own advantages and disadvantages. To detect vehicles and analyse traffic intensity, the authors use a pulse coherent radar (PCR) sensor module. Testing of various modes of operation of the radar sensor was carried out to select the optimal mode for detecting vehicles. The paper describes a method for fixing vehicles of different sizes, filtering and separating the vehicle from the traffic flow. The developed vehicle detection device works in conjunction with signal traffic lights, through which traffic control takes place. The signal traffic lights, which have their own sensors and control units, communicate with each other via a radio channel; there is no need for cable laying. The system is designed to work on road maintenance sites. The paper describes the experimental data when testing on a separate section of the road. The experiment showed the advantage of traffic lights (cars passed the regulated traffic light faster) from the point of view of calculating the traffic flow over the normal traffic light operation. Reducing downtime in traffic jams, in turn, has a beneficial effect on the environmental situation, since at the moment internal combustion engines prevail in vehicles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
