The article presents a list of papers published in the 2004 and 2005 issues of the "Journal of Materials Science." Methods of economical alloying of high pipe steels were considered in the paper. Due to the large environmental, energy, and economic issues in the destruction of the pipeline, the quality of steel pipes is very important. The method described in this article is considered to be relevant not only for pipe steels but also for high-strength steels used in shipbuilding, bridge construction, etc. Review mechanisms of strengthening microalloyed steels were carried out in this work. Schema evolution of the microstructure of microalloyed steels was discussed. The influence of alloying elements in steel by means of optimal process parameters of thermomechanical rolling was analyzed. There are two methods of mathematical modeling used in the study: artificial neural networks (ANNs) which are based on the multilayered perceptron to select the optimal chemical composition and finite element analysis to optimize the process parameters. An experimental dataset was used to train multilayer perceptron (MLP) networks to allow for prediction of the yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation of steel. Due to large availability, low cost, and high accuracy of the results, these methods are considered to be the most promising ones. The mathematical model for calculating mechanical properties of a rolling pipe has been developed. Two ways to reduce the cost of a hot-rolled plate made of microalloyed steels were developed. There has been developed the complex of replacement technological impact which can make it possible to replace or reduce the amount of expensive chemical elements (vanadium, nickel, copper, manganese, chromium, and niobium) without loss of quality. Cryogenics is an exciting, important and inexpensive technique that already has led to main discoveries and holds much future assurance. Cryogenic processing is the treatment of the materials at very low temperature around 77 K. This technique has been proven to be efficient in improving the physical and mechanical properties of the materials such as metals, alloys, plastics and composites. It improves the wear, abrasion, erosion and corrosion resistivity, durability and stabilizes the strength characteristics of various materials. Cryogenic refines and stabilizes the crystal lattice structure and distribute carbon particles throughout the material resulting a stronger and hence more durable material. The works of A. P. Gulyaev devoted to the study and creation of steels and alloys with special properties are considered. The authors of the paper are known specialists in the field of corrosion-resistant materials. They have worked with Gulyaev for many years at the Institute of Quality Steels at TsNIIchermet. N. A. Sorokina and A. P. Shlyamnev began as his postgraduate students. T. V. Svistunova was invited by him to the editorial board of our journal in 1991 and continues this work at present. Consolidated nano/sub-micron AZ31 Mg alloy is a new structural material that combines nano-scale grains with a size of up to 100 nm and sub-micron grains with a size of up to 300 nm. Inherently, this new material should have significantly improved strength, making it a potential candidate for special applications requiring increased specific strength. The present paper evaluates the properties of nano/sub-micron AZ31 Mg alloy in terms of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The obtained properties are explained and associated with the micro-structure of the alloy. In addition, the nano/sub-micron structural alloy was compared to conventional extruded alloy with the same composition in order to distinguish the main differences between the two alloys. This paper describes original experimental results obtained in a study of the rheological behavior of amorphous bulk Vitralloy 1 (Zr41Ti14Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5), which shows linear viscous (Newtonian) flow over a certain range of deformation rates. These results were compared against results obtained for other superplastic alloys, and against results obtained for metal melts during the crystallization process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the results of micro-tensile testing of the individual struts that were extracted from open cell aluminum foams in the as-fabricated (F), annealed (O) and T6-strengthened (T6) conditions. The results reveal that foam struts are generally stronger and more dutile than the corresponding solid alloys under the same heat treatment conditions. The distinguished strut properties are attributed to the unique grain structures of the struts typically consisting of one grain or having bamboo-like grain structure. The measured strut strengths are also incorporated into mechanics models to estimate foam strengths. A comparison of the predicted and measured foam strengths shows that direct measurement of strut properties is critical to make precise estimation of foam strengths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The influence of manganese on the processes of structure formation in manganese cast iron and steels depends considerably on its distribution between the phases. The values of the coefficients of interphase distribution of manganese are important initial data for making a thermodynamic analysis of the system and plotting sections of the diagram. This paper presents new and complete experimental data on the distribution of manganese in carbides and austenite in cast iron. The coefficients are shown to depend strongly on the concentrations and temperature. Values of the coefficients of distribution of manganese between other phases are systematized on the basis of known published data and the Fe - Mn phase diagram. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present paper, the methods of x-ray diffractometry are used to investigate the influence of plastic deformation on the long-range atomic order in alloys with L12, L12(?), and L12(MM) superlattices. The influence of ordering energy, initial values of the long-range order parameter, and average sizes of antiphase domains on the specific features of the dependence of long-range order parameter on the strain degree is considered. It is demonstrated that the wetted strain-induced order-disorder phase transition occurs with rapid accumulation of antiphase boundaries that play an important role in the destruction of long-range atomic order. Minor alloying addition or microalloying technology has already shown dramatic effects on glass formation and thermal stability of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). This paper intends to provide a comprehensive review of recent developments of this technology in the field of BMGs. The beneficial effects of minor alloying additions on the glass formation and the thermal stability of BMGs will be summarized and analyzed.
