BiFeO 3 -g-C 3 N 4 nanoscaled composite was prepared with a hydrothermal method and evaluated as a highly efficient photo-Fenton like catalyst under visible light irradiation. The BiFeO 3 -g-C 3 N 4 composite exhibited much stronger adsorption ability to lignin model pollutant (guaiacol) than that of BiFeO 3 , which may be due to the higher specific surface area (BiFeO 3 -g-C 3 N 4 : 35.59m 2 /g>BiFeO 3 : 7.42m 2 /g) and the adsorption form of π-π stack between g-C 3 N 4 and guaiacol. The composite exhibited excellent visible light-Fenton like catalysis activity, being influenced by the solution pH value and the proportions of BiFeO 3 and g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets. Under optimal conditions with visible light irradiation, the BiFeO 3 -g-C 3 N 4 composite yielded fast degradation of guaiacol with an apparent rate constant of 0.0452min -1 , which were 5.21 and 6.80 folds of that achieved by using BiFeO 3 and the mixture of BiFeO 3 and g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets, respectively. The significantly enhanced visible light-Fenton like catalytic properties of the BiFeO 3 -g-C 3 N 4 composite in comparison with that of BiFeO 3 was attributed to a large surface area, much increased adsorption capacity and the semiconductor coupling effect between BiFeO 3 and g-C 3 N 4 in the composite., (Copyright © 2016. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are aliphatic polyesters accumulated intracellularly by both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. However, compared to the PHAs of Gram-negative bacteria, few endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides, LPS), which would be co-purified with PHAs and cause immunogenic reactions, are found in the PHAs produced by Gram-positive bacteria. A thermophilic Gram-positive bacterium K5, which exhibited good growth and polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB)-accumulating ability, has been isolated and characterized from a biotrickling filter designed for the removal of NOx from flue gas in a coal-fired power plant in China. Based on the biochemical characterization and 16S rRNA gene sequence (Genbank accession no. JX437933), the strain K5 has been identified as Bacillus shackletonii, which has rarely been reported in the literature, and this report is the first time that B. shackletonii has been found to accumulate PHB. The strain K5 was able to utilize glucose as carbon source to synthesize PHB at a broad range of temperatures (from 35 to 50°C), and the ideal temperature was 45°C. The strain K5 could effectively yield PHB of up to 69.9% of its cell dry weight (CDW) (2.28 g/L) in flask experiments employing glucose as carbon source at 45°C, followed by 56.8% and 52.3% of its CDW when using sodium succinate and glycerol as carbon source, respectively. For batch cultivation, the strain K5 was able to produce PHB of up to 72.6% of its cell dry weight (9.76 g/L) employing glucose as carbon source at 45°C and pH7.0., (Copyright © 2014. Cultivation of aerobic granular sludge for pentachlorophenol (PCP) degradation under microaerobic condition (DO concentration was controlled at 0.2-0.7 mg/L) was studied in this paper. Anaerobic granules were selected as inoculum. The changes of appearance were observed and the variations of SVI, VSS/TSS, PN/PS and the size of sludge were measured during cultivating. The capabilities for degradation of PCP, AOX and COD(Cr) were also studied. Observations on mature granules were carried out by scanning electron microscope, and the results indicated bacillus was dominant on the surface of granules while in the inner of granules both bacillus and coccus were the dominant microorganisms. K, Na, Fe, Ca, Mg, Ni, Co, Mn, Cu and Zn were detected in the granules by element analysis.

The successful application of co-immobilized aerobic-anaerobic biomass under limited aeration in wastewater treatment systems would eliminate the problems associated with the intermediates mono-chlorophenol (MCP) and di-chlorophenol(DCP) accumulations. With low initial pentachlorophenol (PCP) concentration, all PCP could be completely removed under oxygen-limited strict anaerobic conditions, and the removal efficiencies with different initial headspace oxygen percentage (IHOP) were not obviously different from each other. While at high initial PCP concentration, under strictly anaerobic conditions PCP and their intermediates were clearly higher than that under other conditions, and produced obvious accumulation, the highest PCP reduction was achieved by the system receiving 30 IHOP, oxygen-limited system also exhibited lower residual TOC concentration and lower concentration of metabolic intermediates MCP and DCP. These results suggested that under strictly anaerobic condition the reductive dechlorination of low chlorinated compounds became rate limiting in the reductive dechlorination pathway, less chlorinated compounds be more amenable to aerobic degradation, and the aerobes of outer layers could function under limited oxygen. The co-immobilized aerobic-anaerobic biomass for methanogenesis under limited-aeration for chlorophenol degradation might be an attractive and efficient alternative for the sequential anaerobic/aerobic system to achieve mineralization of a broad range of recalcitrance highly chlorinated organics and low final TOC concentrations.

The nitrogen-modified lignocelluloses(NML) produced under oxic ammoniation was metabolized by white rot fungus, NH4(+) -N was released, NO3(-) -N concentration was decreased and total nitrogen loss was blocked within incubation period. During releasing nitrogen from the metabolism of NML, white rot fungus cometabolized recalcitrant environmental pollutants and showed higher degradation capability. Results indicated that this NML complex colonized by white rot fungus might be effective with economic feasibility when they are applied into the vast field ecosystem, it might stabilize NH4+ nitrogen flux and bioremediate the polluted environmental sites.

Degradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) with co-immobilizing anaerobic granular sludge and isolated aerobic bacterial species was studied in coupled anaerobic/aerobic integrated reactors. The synergism of aerobes and anaerobes within co-immobilized granule might facilitate degrading the TCP and exchange of anaerobic metabolites 4-CP, which promoted system organic removal efficiency and recovered from organic shock-loads more quickly. The biomass specific activities experiment further confirmed that strict anaerobes be not affected over the course of this experiment by the presence of an oxic environment, aerobic activity predominated in the outer co-immobilized granule layers, while the interior was characterized by anaerobic activity. The co-immobilized granule could thus enable both aerobic and anaerobic microbes function in the same reactor and thereby integrate the oxidative and reductive catabolism.

NOx emission abatement catalysts V2O5 supported on various TiO2 including anatase, rutile and mixture of both were investigated with various physico-chemical measurements such as BET, NH3-TPD, NARP, XRD and so on, and the effect of TiO2 surface properties on the SCR (selective catalytic reduction) activity of V2O5/TiO2 catalysts was studied. It was found that the TiO2 surface properties had strong effect on the SCR activity of V2O5/TiO2 catalysts. The stronger acidic property resulted in the higher exposure of active sites as well as the higher SCR activity.

The effects of the colorimetric buffer solutions were investigated while the two colorimetric reactions of Al-ferron complex and Fe-ferron complex occurred individually, and the effects of the testing wavelength and the pH of the solutions were also investigated. A timed complexation colorimetric analysis method of Al-Fe-ferron in view of the total concentration of (Al + Fe) was then established to determine the species distribution of polymeric Al-Fe. The testing wavelength was recommended at 362 nm and the testing pH value was 5. With a comparison of the ratios of nAl/nFe, the standard adsorption curves of the polymeric Al-Fe solutions were derived from the experimental results. Furthermore, the solutions' composition were various in both the molar nAl/nFe ratios, i.e. 0/0, 5/5, 9/1 and 0/10, and the concentrations associated with the total [Al + Fe] which ranged from 10(-5) to 10(-4) mol/L.

The adhesion of both live and fixed bacteria (Escherichia coli) on glass has been studied under well-defined hydrodynamic conditions, created in an impinging jet apparatus. With this technique one can accurately measure the initial deposition rate jo on the surface, the average lifetime of a bacterium on the surface, tau esc, and the surface area blocked per deposited bacterium, normalized by its projected area, gamma. The experimental results are compared to theoretical results for equivalent spheres. It is found that near the stagnation point the deposition rate jo is mainly controlled by convective diffusive transport which, for rod-shaped Eschericia coli, with an axis ratio of about 2, is found to be equal to that for spheres. No differences in jo and tau esc were found between live and fixed bacteria at low flow rates. At high flow rates fixed bacteria adhered to the surface at a slower rate. In both systems jo was found to decrease suddenly at a distance of about 150 microns from the stagnation point, in contrast to systems of spherical particles for which jo is uniform over the surface. Most likely this is due to the rotation of the rod-shaped particles, which vary their distance to the surface periodically with time. The main difference between live and fixed bacteria, besides different deposition rates in strong flows, is that gamma is about 30% larger for fixed bacteria than for live ones, resulting in a much lower final coverage for fixed bacteria. These results imply a larger repulsion between fixed bacteria than between living ones. From detachment experiments we can conclude that not all bacteria stick to the surface with the same bond strength. The variation in the bond strength is due to the aging of the bonds between the bacteria and the surface. The average bond strength corresponds to an energy of about 13-15 kT.
