Effective accident detection and traffic flow forecasting are of great importance for quick respond, impact elimination and intelligent control of the traffic flow consisting of autonomous vehicles. This paper proposes a traffic accident detection method for connected and automated transport systems by conducting a grid-based parameter extracting and SVC-based traffic state classification. Allowing for the dynamic spread of traffic flow over time, from upstream to downstream and from accident lanes to other lanes, a spatiotemporal Markov model is established to predict the evolution of traffic flow after accident by introducing the grid as state detection unit and fitting the spatiotemporal evolution with the parameter space mean speed to match the need of both detection accuracy and monitoring scope. Compared with actual accident data, the validation results indicate that the proposed methods present a good performance in accident detection with the accident detection rate as 87.72% and a higher precision rate than both SVM (support vector machine) and ANN (artificial neural network) models in traffic flow prediction. With the active traffic accident identification and dynamic traffic flow prediction, it is beneficial to shorten detection time, reduce possible impacts of traffic accidents and carbon emissions from congestion. In new-tier cities with rapid urbanization, the reorganization of urban spatial functions and the development of road networks have brought novel challenges to traffic congestion control. Urban land use patterns have a significant correlation with urban traffic congestion. However, whether and how land use patterns of cities close to the roads affect road congestion is less to be discussed. This article investigated the relationship between land use patterns close to the urban trunk road network and traffic congestion in new tier cities Xi'an, China. We adopted the DBSCAN algorithm to cluster POIs and use the mixed POI clusters to label the socio-economic functions of roads. We found the spatial heterogeneity of POIs on the trunk road network and identified the impacts of the scales and types of POI on road congestion based on the empirical analysis. Compared to the POIs as origin and destination of the trips, the POIs as stopover points of the trips cause significantly more road congestion. The POIs with bidirectional flows at entrances/exits are more likely to cause road congestion than the POIs with unidirectional flows. Moreover, the POIs with flexible traffic flows increase road congestion, while the POIs with predicted traffic flows have no statistically significant correlation with road congestion. The results help urban planners to plan the scale, type, and location of POIs close to roads and to optimize the socio-economic functions of roads and alleviate road congestion. Predicting spatiotemporal congestion situations of a traffic network is a prerequisite for urban traffic control. This study proposes a spatiotemporal traffic congestion situation prediction method based on the recurrent gated unit-convolutional neural network (GRU-CNN). Considering the time and space attributes of traffic data, the third-order tensor of the traffic data is extracted from the time domain, and the GRU is used to predict the traffic flow parameters of the traffic network. Then, the third-order tensor of multisource spatiotemporal traffic data is compressed into traffic data images and combined with the spatial structure. The feature extraction technology of a CNN is used to extract and identify the traffic network congestion features. Actual urban traffic network data are selected for model verification. The multistep prediction of the traffic flow parameters effectively ensures prediction accuracy. The proposed model is trained by the actual classification dataset. The prediction results of the test set demonstrate the model's reliability. Based on predicting the traffic parameters of the network, this model can give a highly accurate judgment of the traffic situation for the entire network. Cities need to develop, people's lives need to be improved, and the living environment needs to be enhanced. With the strengthening of the national policy of paying attention to people's livelihood, the speed of development, the increase of the number of cars, and the major demolition and construction of streets are in full swing everywhere. However, traffic congestion has become a serious social problem, which greatly affects economic development and people's daily life. Therefore, the study of signal coordination control of urban traffic arteries has become an urgent problem for all countries. In this paper, after a brief introduction of the basic concepts and related technologies of traffic control systems, we focus on the arterial coordinated control system. The adaptive control model studied in this paper reveals the vehicle arrival dynamics from a microscopic perspective, which helps to improve the adaptive control effect and alleviate urban intersection congestion. Modeling and control of road traffic in large-scale urban networks present considerable challenges. The traffic equilibrium phenomena, with the question of route choice behavior in case of heterogeneous urban networks, has not been thoroughly investigated in parsimonious and classical models due to the limitation, like large network size, spatiotemporal propagation of congestion, and the interaction between driver decisions, etc. In this paper, we propose a bi-level approximating dynamic equilibrium model (BLADEM) for the approximating dynamic equilibrium analysis in multi-region network based on macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD). The proposed model combines the region-based model and the internal-region model. With the information from region MFD, the region-based model is used to implement the time-dependent regional route choice estimation. Traffic equilibrium condition (dynamic user equilibrium, DUE) is considered in an internal-region model with time-aggregated regional OD demand from the region level. Furthermore, the complexity of the proposed model is derived. Then, the comparative analysis of the algorithm complexity between the proposed model and the DUE model is given. The proposed model is evaluated based on the high-resolution vehicle trajectory data (or connected vehicles trajectory data) from the DiDi platform collected in Chengdu, China with more than 3,000,000 GPS points during a typical workday. The evaluation results show that the proposed model can obtain the approximating traffic dynamics compared with the DUE algorithm. Pleasantly, the improved calculation efficiency is between 21% and 42%. Due to the nonlinearity and dynamics of transportation systems, traffic signal control (TSC) in urban traffic networks has always been an important challenge. In recent years, model predictive control (MPC) has shown extraordinary potential in TSC due to its outstanding ability to model dynamic systems. However, the relatively complex online computing, lack of reasonable setpoints for target solving, and uncertainty of traffic network hinder MPC from being further applied. To address these problems, we propose a hierarchical, distributed, and robust model predictive control (HD-RMPC) framework for urban TSC. At the slow-update layer, the road network is dynamically divided into several subareas according to regional attributes and real-time traffic demand. Meanwhile, the volume is coordinated in a robust way for the purpose of traffic equilibrium and overflow prevention. Then, the set-point matrix of each subarea is calculated to equalize the flow in the subarea. This distributed framework guarantees the real-time performance of MPC in urban traffic networks. At the fast-update layer, we adopt an improved prediction model by explicit modeling of the disturbance and reduce the prediction error. Finally, the objective function is reconstructed and solved at the control layer to obtain the optimal control law. Through continuous and asynchronous optimization of the set point and prediction model, the framework significantly improves the control effect. With China's fast expansion of urban traffic and railway engineering, a great number of subway and railway lines have been erected in subterranean tunnels in recent years. When the tunnel is in the process of construction, it will encounter the weak fracture zone, and the surrounding rock of this part of the tunnel is often poor stability and deformation is difficult to control, which will lead to the smooth progress of the project, delay and other problems. Therefore, to facilitate the timely treatment of tunnel soft surrounding rock, the study of image recognition of its stability is particularly important. Based on this, an improved local binary mode algorithm (ILBP) is proposed in this paper. By adjusting the weight of binary polynomial in local binary mode (LBP) operator, the target of ILBP is to extract the characteristics of weak surrounding rock of tunnel at a specific location, hoping to provide reference for the follow-up study of tunnel engineering. Urban expressways take on rapid and external transport in the city due to their fast, safe, and large capacity. Implementing intelligent and active traffic control can effectively improve the performance of urban traffic and mitigate the urban traffic congestion problem. Real-time traffic guidance is one critical way of intelligent active traffic control, and travel time is the most important input for real-time traffic guidance. We employed and improved a machine learning method called the evolving fuzzy participatory learning (ePL) model to predict the freeway travel time online in this paper. The ePL model has a promising nonlinear mapping potential, which is well suitable for the traffic prediction. We used generalized recursive least square (GRLS) to improve the estimation accuracy of the model's parameters. This model is a fuzzy control model. Its output is the forecasting result which is also the fuzzy reasoning result. We tested this model by comparing it to other travel time prediction approaches, with the freeway data from the Caltrans Performance Measurement System. The results from the improved ePL model showed mean absolute error of 5.941 seconds, mean absolute percentage error of 1.316%, and root mean square error of 10.923 s. The performances are better than those of the baseline models including ARIMA and BPN. With the acceleration of urbanization and the development of the automobile industry, the contradiction between the traffic capacity of existing urban roads and the growing traffic demand has become increasingly acute. Traffic congestion is becoming increasingly prominent. The purpose of this article is to consider the characteristics of traffic risk factors and to study the method of establishing a flexible traffic system. It can relieve traffic congestion and provide a smooth and orderly traffic environment using intelligent transportation systems to control and direct traffic flow. Based on the large urban road network, this research uses the theory of coordinated control and learning mechanism, fuzzy control, dynamic reprogramming, and other theories to study phase sequence, balance peripheral load, and overall traffic flow. It also uses on-board sensors to optimize the collection and processing of network information, decompose traffic guidance work, select the optimal route, and autonomously guide the intelligent transportation system. Under the flexible demand scheme, the average load of the trunk road is reduced by a larger degree, which is 4% lower than that of the fixed demand scheme. At the same time, the average load of the branch has increased more, which is 4% higher than that of the fixed demand scheme. It can be seen that under the elastic demand scheme, the distribution of traffic flow in the road network is more balanced and the optimization effect of relieving traffic pressure on trunk roads and improving the utilization rate of branch roads is more significant. In view of the rescue delay due to traffic congestion in the urban road network, this paper implemented real-time traffic control with congestion index constraints in emergency vehicle dispatching and proposed a two-stage optimization model and algorithm. In the first stage, salp swarm algorithm (SSA) was combined with Dijkstra algorithm, and a novel hybrid algorithm with new updating rules was designed to get the multiple alternative paths. In the second stage, an improved salp swarm algorithm (ISSA) with a population grouping strategy was proposed to obtain the best evacuation schemes and the optimal rescue paths of emergency vehicles. Results of the illustrative examples show that, after evacuation, the average travel time of all alternative paths is reduced by 24.22%, while traffic congestion indexes of the adjacent road sections almost unchanged. The computation time of the hybrid algorithm for obtaining the set number of alternative paths is 56.62% and 50.47% shorter than that of bat algorithm (BA) and SSA. For the solution of the evacuation model, the computation time of the ISSA is 33.51%, 30.15%, and 30.60% shorter than that of particle swarm optimization (PSO), BA, and SSA, and the optimal solution of the ISSA is 25.92%, 10.06%, and 0.97% better than that of PSO, BA, and SSA. That is, we shorten the emergency response time and control the adverse impact of traffic evacuation on background traffic. The improved algorithm has excellent performance. Urban traffic control systems (UTCSs) are deployed to a great number of urban cities despite lacking feedback when adjusting the traffic signals. The development of reinforcement learning (RL) makes it possible to apply feedback to UTCS, and great efforts have been made on RL-based traffic control strategies. However, those studies are regardless of the traffic flow theory of the network and the road users' perspectives on the performance of traffic. This study proposes a multiagent reinforcement learning (MARL) based traffic control strategy, in which each intersection in a macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) region was controlled by one agent using the level of services (LOS) and MFD-based parameters as rewards. The proposed MARL strategy was evaluated by simulation in a 3×3 grid network compared with pretimed, actuated, and MFD-based traffic control strategies. The evaluation results showed that, at different demand levels, the proposed MARL strategy outperforms the other three traffic control strategies in terms of average intersection queue length and average intersection waiting time to a different extent. Results also showed that the proposed MARL dissipated the congestion faster than the other three control strategies. Results of the Friedman test indicated that the differences in performances between the proposed MARL and other strategies were statistically significant regardless of the demand level. The MFD in the testbed network controlled by the proposed MARL was different from that controlled by the pretimed strategy, especially the MFD scatter plot. Real-time traffic signal control has long been a critical way to improve traffic congestion. Transit Signal Priority (TSP) is seen as a cost-effective way to reduce travel time variability. Most of the previous studies develop real-time signal control systems on a vehicle basis, which is unable to efficiently provide preferential treatment on transit vehicles. Person-based signal control systems, which transform traffic delay computation units from vehicle to passenger, have been proposed to try to address this limitation. However, their models, optimizing signal plan cycle-by-cycle, cannot rapidly respond to traffic variations. This study proposes a Person-based Adaptive traffic signal control method with Cooperative Transit signal priority (PACT). In PACT, not only do Road-Side Units (RSUs) perform signal optimization, but also On-Board Units (OBUs) provide in-vehicle speed advisory to reduce delays. The interaction between RSU and OBU is conducted second-by-second, which has high adaptability to traffic variations. Experiments are performed based on real traffic data via traffic simulation platform SUMO. The results indicate that PACT can efficiently reduce delays of both bus passengers and auto passengers at a signalized intersection. Compared to preoptimized signal plans, the results show that each passenger on transit vehicles experiences 33%–70% decreases in delays, and each auto passenger experiences 3%–29% decreases in delays. PACT can reduce 80%–98% in delays when the occupancy weight factor is relatively large, showing the potential of extending PACT on performing signal preemption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, urban traffic congestion has seriously affected the healthy development of urbanization in China. And many measures to combat congestion have had little effect. The purpose of this paper is to find out the most reasonable and sustainable measures to control traffic congestion. Based on the theory of system dynamics, this study constructs a model of the formation mechanism of urban traffic congestion in China, and analyzes the thinking error of the traditional strategy of "building roads to eliminate traffic congestion" This study includes the current policy measures to control traffic congestion in the system dynamics model and analyzes the influence of each measure on the formation mechanism of urban traffic congestion. Then, it critiques the unsustainability of rigid policies, such as the vehicle number limit and the "similar road building to control traffic congestion" policies. This study reveals that of the five policies adopted by the government to alleviate traffic congestion, and come to the conclusion: the "sparse block collocation" policy is the most sustainable and fundamental congestion control measure. To achieve efficient traffic congestion control and support the healthy development of urbanization in China in the future, the government should increase the balance of infrastructure investment to improve the slow environment of public transport, adhere to public transport-oriented land development policies, raise the cost of motor vehicle travel, and promote urban traffic. The behavior of changing lanes has a great impact on road traffic with heavy traffic. Traffic flow density is one of the important parameters that characterize the characteristics of traffic flow, and it will also be affected by the behavior of changing lanes, especially in the case of each lane. The penetration of autonomous vehicles can effectively reduce lane-changing behavior. Studying the relationship between traffic flow density and lane-changing behavior under different autonomous vehicle penetration rates is of great significance for describing the operation mechanism of mixed traffic flow and the control of mixed traffic. In this article, we use empirical, simulation, and data-driven methods to analyze the urban expressway of autonomous vehicles with penetration rates of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, and 80%, respectively. A simulation experiment was carried out on the road, and data related to density, the rate of changing into the lanes, and the rate of changing out lanes were collected. The analysis of the experimental results found the following: (1) The increase in penetration of autonomous vehicles leads to a certain degree of downward trend in density, the rate of changing into the lanes, and the rate of changing out lanes. (2) Different lanes have different effects on the penetration of autonomous vehicles. In a 4-lane road, the two lanes farther from the entrance and exit are closer in appearance, while the two lanes closer to the entrance and exit are similar. (3) The relationship between density and the rate of changing into the lanes and the rate of changing out lanes shows a linear relationship with the penetration of autonomous vehicles. Although the performance of each lane is slightly different, in general, it can be carried out by a multiple regression model. The given parameter value range is relatively close under different permeability. In summary, autonomous vehicles effectively reduce the traffic density and lane-changing behavior of each lane. There is a linear relationship between traffic flow density and lane-changing behavior with the penetration of autonomous vehicles. The density-lane-changing behavior model proposed in this paper can better describe the relationship between the density of the circular multilane urban expressway and the lane-changing behavior in the case of a large traffic flow in mixed traffic. Expressway, as the main artery of urban traffic, realizes the smooth operation of the whole urban road network through reasonably balancing the traffic flow. However, due to the lack of reasonable and effective traffic control, the safety and congestion of expressways are becoming more and more serious. The development of intelligent network technology provides a new idea to solve the control problem of expressways. In this paper, a data-driven ramp control model of urban expressway is constructed. The interaction of traffic information is realized through intelligent network connection technology. The cooperative control strategy of VSL and RM is adopted. The mutual feedback of VSL and RM is realized based on the improved METANET model. The simulation experiment based on VISSIM secondary development shows that the collaborative control strategy under the intelligent network environment could make the vehicle travel time reduced by 20.59% and the speed difference between adjacent sections of the expressway mainline by 34.07%, which realized the coordinated control of the mainline and the on-ramp under the intelligent network environment, alleviate the expressway traffic congestion, reduce the traffic pressure, and improve the efficiency of the road network. In complex urban intersection scenarios, due to heavy traffic and signal control, there are many slow-moving or temporarily stopped vehicles behind the stop lines. At these intersections, it is difficult to extract traffic parameters, such as delay and queue length, based on vehicle detection and tracking due to the dense and severe occlusion of vehicles. In this study, a novel background subtraction algorithm based on sparse representation is proposed to detect the traffic foreground at complex intersections to obtain traffic parameters. By establishing a novel background dictionary update model, the proposed method solves the problem that the background is easily contaminated by slow-moving or temporarily stopped vehicles and therefore cannot obtain the complete traffic foreground. Using the real-world urban traffic videos and the PV video sequences of i -LIDS, we first compare the proposed method with other detection methods based on sparse representation. Then, the proposed method is compared with other commonly used traffic foreground detection models in different urban intersection traffic scenarios. The experimental results show that the proposed method performs well in keeping the background model being unpolluted from slow-moving or temporarily stopped vehicles and has a good performance in both qualitative and quantitative evaluations. In recent years, urban traffic congestion has become more serious and the capacity of roads has declined, resulting in frequent traffic accidents. In order to effectively alleviate the traffic congestion of the regional road network, aiming at the problem of lack of accurate OD data of the road network, a regional boundary control method of the traffic network based on fuzzy RBF neural network PID (FR-PID) is proposed by combining the theory of macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD). Firstly, based on the traffic survey, the simulation model of the study area is built, and the basic data such as the traffic flow and the time occupation rate of each road section are obtained. Secondly, the simulation data are used to test the existence of MFD in the road network, and the controlled area is defined. Then, the vehicle change model of the road network area is established. Then, in view of the problem of poor adaptive ability of traditional PID control, the FR-PID control structure is designed. Finally, an example is verified by VISSIM software. In the simulation, different control methods are used for comparison and verification, and the simulation results are analyzed. The results show that the control effect of the proposed method is better than that of the traditional method, and the regional average accumulative vehicle number, regional average completed volume, regional accumulative delays, and total vehicle travel time are optimized by 28.21%, 41.19%, 27.06%, and 32.73%, respectively. Fast road emergency response can minimize the losses caused by traffic accidents. However, emergency rescue on urban arterial roads is faced with the high probability of congestion caused by accidents, which makes the planning of rescue path complicated. This paper proposes a refined path planning method for emergency rescue vehicles on congested urban arterial roads during traffic accidents. Firstly, a rescue path planning environment for emergency vehicles on congested urban arterial roads based on the Markov decision process is established, which focuses on the architecture of arterial roads, taking the traffic efficiency and vehicle queue length into consideration of path planning; then, the prioritized experience replay deep Q-network (PERDQN) reinforcement learning algorithm is used for path planning under different traffic control schemes. The proposed method is tested on the section of East Youyi Road in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China. The results show that compared with the traditional shortest path method, the rescue route planned by PERDQN reduces the arrival time to the accident site by 67.1%, and the queue length at upstream of the accident point is shortened by 16.3%, which shows that the proposed method is capable to plan the rescue path for emergency vehicles in urban arterial roads with congestion, shorten the arrival time, and reduce the vehicle queue length caused by accidents. Traffic signal optimization is a significant means for smoothing urban traffic flow. However, the operation of traffic signals is currently seriously constrained by the data available from traditional point detectors. In recent years, an emerging technology, connected vehicle (CV), which can percept the overall traffic environment in real time, has drawn researchers' attention. With the new data source, traffic controllers should be able to make smarter decisions. A lot of work has been done to develop a new traffic signal control pattern under connected-vehicle environment. This paper provides a comprehensive review of these studies, aiming at sketching out the state of the arts in this research field. Several basic control problems, communication, control input, and objectives, are briefly introduced. The commonly used optimization models for this problem are summarized into three types: rule-based models, mathematical programming-based models, and artificial intelligence-based models. Aimed at the problem of occasional congestion control, the cusp catastrophe theory is used to establish the catastrophe model of the urban road system under occasional congestion, finding breakpoints and analyzing stability after urban road system catastrophes by constructing the energetic function; based on the catastrophe characteristics of the urban road system, the feasibility method of congestion control is discussed. The results show that the control method of traffic flow based on catastrophe characteristics of the urban road system can effectively improve the efficiency of the road system in theory. The identification and analysis of the spatiotemporal dynamic traffic patterns in citywide road networks constitute a crucial process for complex traffic management and control. However, city-scale and synchronal traffic data pose challenges for such kind of quantification, especially during peak hours. Traditional studies rely on data from road-based detectors or multiple communication systems, which are limited in not only access but also coverage. To avoid these limitations, we introduce real-time, traffic condition digital maps as our input. The digital maps keep spatiotemporal urban traffic information in nature and are open to access. Their pixel colors represent traffic conditions on corresponding road segments. We propose a stacked convolutional autoencoder-based method to extract a low-dimension feature vector for each input. We compute and analyze the distances between vectors. The statistical results show different traffic patterns during given periods. With the actual data of Chongqing city, we compare the feature extraction performance between our proposed method and histogram. The result shows our proposed method can extract spatiotemporal features better. For the same data set, there is little difference in the number distribution of red pixels found in the statistics result of the histogram, while differences do exist in the results of our proposed method. We find the most fluctuated morning is on Friday; the most fluctuated evening is on Tuesday; and the most stable evening is on Wednesday. The distance captured by our method can represent the evolution of different traffic conditions during the morning and evening peak hours. Urban intersection control mainly undertakes two tasks: traffic safety and traffic efficiency. Traditional intersection control models and methods have been insufficient in improving traffic efficiency, which is composed of the increase in traffic demand and the complexity of demand at present. In this paper, we propose a novel model and method called ATCM, which is based on the advanced technology of cooperative vehicle infrastructure. In this paper, a novel active traffic control model (ATCM) is proposed, which is based on the advanced technology of cooperative vehicle infrastructure. ATCM increases the intersection control model variables from the traditional two dimensions to five dimensions. It reshapes intersection control from the perspective of road designers and managers, so it can achieve more flexible and efficient traffic control. To this end, a multivariable active traffic control model is constructed, which includes road speed, lane control, sequence, phase, and green light time; a D-double layer optimization method is designed for this model. The first part of this optimization method combines speed control and dynamic phase sequence control. The second part is realized by the combination of lane control and dynamic phase sequence control. With the consideration of the uneven traffic volume distribution at intersections on urban arterials, this paper aims to minimize the overall passenger delay (buses and private vehicles) at intersections and identify the applicable conditions of the proposed method with field data. The overlapping phase-based signal control logic and the bus priority control algorithm under two-way signal coordination on arterial roads are proposed. The vehicular capacities and occupancies for buses and passenger cars are considered in the evaluation of the method performance. A field test was carried out at two major intersections on an arterial road in Hefei, China. With the test data, the proposed method is examined and the possible influencing factors are analyzed for identifying the corresponding applicable conditions. The analysis result shows that the application of the overlapping phase helps to provide a relatively flexible signal control for the varying traffic demands at intersections. Compared to the conventional phase, it isof more practical significance to consider overlapping phase and apply bussignal priority control under two-way signal coordination according to the condition of uneven traffic volumedistribution at intersections on urban arterials. The proposed method can effectively decrease the total passenger delay at the intersections on urban arterials under certain applicable conditions. The possible factors influencing the method applicability are identified as well. It is verified that bus signal priority control under the two-way signal coordination, based on overlapping phases, is more conducive to improving traffic efficiency on urban arterials. Regarding the influencing factors and the applicability of the proposed method, the results show that not all situations are conducive to decreasing passenger delay at intersections. It is known that many variables influence traffic, yet very little is known about the weight of each factor in the dynamics of traffic in cities of developing countries, in many cases due to their peculiar traffic regulations. In this work, we search for the variables that have the most significant impact on the average travel speed of three distinct types of vehicles: passenger cars, taxis, and buses. First, we developed a tool featuring algorithms that simulate ordinary overtaking and car-following behaviors, along with controls for setting vehicles' actions, particularly buses' and taxis' stops. Then, we chose a particular zone to study, based on its common geometry and the particular traffic infrastructure (speed bumps, traffic lights, and bus stops) inside it. Later on, three experiments were carried out, with the following results. (1) Both the buses' arrival frequency and curbside bus stops affect the passenger cars' average travel speed. The buses' response was affected by the bus bay and curbside bus stops. The buses' speed tendency influenced neither the passenger cars' nor buses' response. (2) Taxis' arrival frequency, stopping frequency, and speed tendency were found to influence the passenger cars' response. Taxis' response was altered by taxis' speed tendency, while buses' response was affected by taxis' arrival frequencies. (3) The number of speed bumps, the arrival frequency of passenger cars, and their speed conditions (homogeneous and heterogeneous) affect the passenger cars' response. With recent development of mobile Internet technology and connected vehicle technology, vehicle trajectory data are readily available and exhibit great potential to be used as an alternative data source for urban traffic signal control. In this study, a Queue Intensity Adaptive (QIA) algorithm is proposed, using vehicle trajectory data as the only input to perform adaptive signal control. First, a Kalman filter-based method is employed to estimate real-time queue state with vehicle trajectories. Then, based on queue intensity that quantifies queuing pressure, five control situations are defined, and different min-max optimization models are designed correspondingly. Last, a situation-aware signal control optimization procedure is developed to adapt intersection's queue intensity. QIA algorithm optimizes phase sequence and green time simultaneously. One case study was conducted at a field intersection in Shenzhen, China. The results show that provided with 7.4% penetrated vehicle trajectories, QIA algorithm effectively prevented queue spillback by constraining temporal percentage of queue spillback under 2.4%. The performance of QIA was also compared with the algorithm in Synchro and Max Pressure (MP) method. It was found that compared with Synchro, the extreme queue intensity, temporal percentage of queue spillback, delay, and stops were decreased by 54.7%, 97%, 22.3%, and 45.1%, respectively, and compared with MP the above four indices were decreased by 16%, 61.5%, −1.8%, and 49.4%, respectively. Due to increasing traffic demand, many metropolitan areas are experiencing extensive traffic congestion, which demands for efficient traffic signal timing and optimization. However, conventional efficiency measure-based signal optimization cannot handle the ubiquitous uncertainty in the road networks, demanding for the incorporation of reliability measures into signal optimization, which is still in its early stage. Therefore, targeting this issue, based on the recent studies on recognizing travel time reliability (TRR) as an important reliability measure of road networks, a travel time reliability-based urban road traffic network signal timing optimization model is proposed in this paper, with the objective function to optimize a TTR measure, i.e., buffer time index. The proposed optimization model is solved using the heuristic particle swarm optimization approach. A case study is conducted using microscopic traffic simulation for a road network in the City of Nanjing, China. Results demonstrate that the proposed optimization model can improve travel time reliability of the road traffic network and the efficiency of the road traffic network as well. This paper proposes two algorithms for signal timing optimization of single intersections, namely, microbial genetic algorithm and simulated annealing algorithm. The basis of the optimization of these two algorithms is the original timing scheme of the SCATS, and the optimized parameters are the average delay of vehicles and the capacity. This paper introduces two traffic light strategies to control traffic and avoid traffic jam in urban networks. One strategy is a new traffic light scheduling system, which controls traffic light using local variables (waiting time and number of vehicle on links) but has a global impact on the traffic, using shared variables between neighbour intersections. The proposed traffic light scheduling system is designed based on eigenvector centrality of intersection relation matrix. The intersection relation matrix is a new representation of a junction which indicates the traffic relation between intersection's links and adjacent intersections. The second contribution is expanding a new dual mode traffic light strategy (namely, Exit Status Traffic Light (ETL)), which notifies the drivers whether they are allowed to exit a street or not. In other words, vehicles are allowed to enter a street in both red and green ETL, but they are not allowed to exit the street for a long time in red ETL (while traffic is heavy in the subnetwork). The ETL gives a chance to relax traffic in a subnetwork and avoid traffic jam. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is analysed and evaluated by a number of simulations on three-way grid networks. Work zones widely exist on urban roads in many countries and have a significant negative impact on traffic. Few studies have focused on modeling the traffic flow of the work zone on the urban arterials, especially on the work zone at the intersections. In this paper, a microscopic model based on the social force theory for the traffic flow of the intersection with a specific work zone, called straddling work zone, is proposed. The model can capture the no lane division and irregular boundary characteristics of the traffic of the intersection with a straddling work zone and also can reflect the interaction of the intersection traffic flows from the two opposite directions. The proposed model is calibrated and validated using the real work zone data, and the results display that the MARE values are all less than 10%. The factors affecting the traffic flow in the straddling work zone are analyzed through simulation. Our study reveals that the distance from the lower edge of the work zone to the median divider of the road and the proportion of large vehicles in the work zone have the greatest impact on the signalized intersection, which provides a reference for the future traffic control at the intersection with the straddling work zone. The premise of implementing an effective traffic control strategy is the accurate traffic state recognition. In the existing study, traffic state recognition methods were processed by using statistical characteristics and long-term scale detection of field traffic data. Hence, the dynamic characteristics and subtle changes in traffic flow were easy to overlook. At present, more and more advanced traffic detection technology provides reliable and accurate data for measuring and distinguishing the state of urban road traffic, such as the cooperative vehicle-infrastructure system, wide-area radar technology, and 5G technology. This study proposes a novel method called HTSI (High Precision Traffic State Identification Method), which is based on the advanced detection technology in traffic state recognition at the intersection: The raw data used for intersection traffic state recognition is high-precision detection data of tracking characteristics, which make the data look like a picture of the intersection at God's perspective. To this end, we construct an image model for intersections and implement image feature extraction in a way that is different from traditional image processing. Then, the traffic state recognition problem at the intersection is translated into an image searching problem with tags. The image searching is realized by the hashing algorithm. This paper describes a solution to solve the issue of automatic multipedestrian tracking and counting. First, background modeling algorithm is applied to actively obtain multipedestrian candidates, followed by a confirmation step with classification. Then each pedestrian patch is handled by real-time TLD (Tracking-Learning-Detection) to get a new predication position according to similarity measure. Further TLD results are compared with classification list to determine a new, disappeared, or existing pedestrian. Finally single line counting with buffer zone is employed to count pedestrians. Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of intelligent transportation system around the world, which helps to relieve urban traffic congestion problems. For instance, many mega-cities in China have devoted a large amount of money and resources to the development of intelligent transportation system. This poses an intriguing and important issue: how to measure and quantify the contribution of intelligent transportation system to the urban city, which is still a puzzle. This paper proposes a matching difference-in-difference model to calculate the contribution rate of intelligent transportation system on traffic smoothness. Within the model, the main effect indicators of traffic smoothness are first identified, and then the evaluation index system is built, and finally the ideas of the matching pool are introduced. The proposed model is illustrated in Guangzhou, China (capital city of Guangdong province). The results show that introduction of ITS contributes 9.25% to the improvement of traffic smooth in Guangzhou. Also, the research explains the working mechanism of how ITS improves urban traffic smooth. Eventually, some strategy recommendations are put forward to improve urban traffic smooth. To evaluate traffic conditions in an urban region, the average travel speed in the street network and the average traffic flow per lane are selected as indexes. The results for identifying traffic conditions are obtained using macroscopic fundamental diagram. Because of the difficulty of collecting the traffic parameter of travel speed from widely distributed fixed detectors directly, in this paper, the relationship between average travel speed and queue lengths at signalized intersections within the urban area is established based on an equivalent assumption. Finally, the average travel speed estimation model proposed in this paper is tested with microscopic simulation platform, and the results showed that the average travel speed estimation model performed well with satisfactory accuracy. In addition, the best performance of the network efficiency can be identified based on the reflections of macroscopic fundamental diagram, and the evaluation system is simple enough for application in engineering. This work proposes a nonlinear model predictive controller for the urban gating problem. The system model is formalized based on a research on existing models of the network fundamental diagram and the perimeter control systems. For the existing models, modifications are suggested: additional state variables are allocated to describe the queue dynamics at the network gates. Using the extended model, a nonlinear model predictive controller is designed offering a 'non-greedy' policy compared with previous, 'greedy' gating control designs. The greedy and non-greedy nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) controllers are compared with a greedy linear feedback proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller in different traffic situations. The proposed non-greedy NMPC controller outperforms the other two approaches in terms of travel distance performance and queue lengths. Short distance trips are defined as any trips shorter than or equal to 5 kilometers, which have been found to be a big contributor to the traffic congestion problem. This paper is intended to analyze factors that influence the mode choice of short distance travels in order to help reduce short distance trips by cars. A survey is conducted at two typical kinds of residential areas, one with a high proportion of short distance car trips and another one with a low proportion. Then, by applying the structural equation modeling, it is found that the age, the household income, and the vehicle ownerships have a significant effect on the mode choice of short distance travels. Besides, among residents of the same type (same age, household income, and vehicle ownerships) in surveyed areas, those in the area with a better green-mode travel environment account for a higher proportion choosing the green mode than those in other areas. Based on this result, it is concluded that a better green-mode travel environment leads to a higher proportion of green-mode travels. The interactions between signal setting and traffic assignment can directly affect the urban road network efficiency. In order to improve the coordination of signal setting with traffic assignment, this paper created a traffic control algorithm considering traffic assignment; meanwhile, the link impedance function and the route choice function were introduced into this paper to study the user's route choice and the road network flow distribution. Then based on the above research, we created a system utility value model. Finally through the VISSIM software to simulate the test network, we verified the superiority of the coordination algorithm and the model and gave the optimal flow of the road network. A fast pedestrian recognition algorithm based on multisensor fusion is presented in this paper. Firstly, potential pedestrian locations are estimated by laser radar scanning in the world coordinates, and then their corresponding candidate regions in the image are located by camera calibration and the perspective mapping model. For avoiding time consuming in the training and recognition process caused by large numbers of feature vector dimensions, region of interest-based integral histograms of oriented gradients (ROI-IHOG) feature extraction method is proposed later. A support vector machine (SVM) classifier is trained by a novel pedestrian sample dataset which adapt to the urban road environment for online recognition. Finally, we test the validity of the proposed approach with several video sequences from realistic urban road scenarios. The cities are not static environments. They change constantly. When we talk about traffic in the city, the evolution of traffic lights is a journey from mindless automation to increasingly intelligent, fluid traffic management. In our approach, presented in this paper, reinforcement-learning mechanism based on cost function is introduced to determine optimal decisions for each traffic light, based on the solution given by Larry Page for page ranking in Web environment Page et al. 1999. Our approach is similar with work presented by Sheng-Chung et al. 2009 and Yousef et al. 2010. We consider that the traffic lights are controlled by servers and a score for each road is computed based on efficient Page Rank approach and is used in cost function to determine optimal decisions. We demonstrate that the cumulative contribution of each car in the traffic respects the main constrain of Page Rank approach, preserving all the properties of M matrix consider in our model. Operators of parking guidance and information systems PGIS often encounter difficulty in determining when and how to provide reliable car park availability information to drivers. Reliability has become a key factor to ensure the benefits of urban PGIS. The present paper is the first to define the guiding parking reliability of urban parking variable message signs (VMSs). By analyzing the parking choice under guiding and optional parking lots, a guiding parking reliability model was constructed. A mathematical program was formulated to determine the guiding parking reliability of VMS. The procedures were applied to a numerical example, and the factors that affect guiding reliability were analyzed. The quantitative changes of the parking berths and the display conditions of VMS were found to be the most important factors influencing guiding reliability. The parking guiding VMS achieved the best benefit when the parking supply was close to or was less than the demand. The early warning of incidents on urban arterial roads in a congested city can reduce delay, accidents and pollutant emission. Freeway incident detection systems implemented in recent years may not be suitable for arterial incidents. Arterial incident detection is more difficult. The traffic flow on an arterial road is not conserved from the upstream end of a road link to the downstream end because urban traffic does turn in and out of side-streets, car-parks and local residences. Roadside friction such as kerbside parking and shopping traffic also tends to create apparent incidents which are in fact frequent and normal events. This paper develops a definition for an arterial incident and describes a case study on an arterial road in Melbourne, Australia. The study shows that detectors upstream of an incident are more useful for incident detection than downstream detectors. Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) have been used to alleviate congestion problems arising due to demand during peak periods. The success of ITS strategies relies heavily on two factors: 1) the ability to accurately estimate the temporal and spatial distribution of travel demand on the transportation network during peak periods, and, 2) providing real-time route guidance to users. This paper addresses the first factor. A model to estimate time dependent origin-destination (O-D) trip tables in urban areas during peak periods is proposed. The daily peak travel period is divided into several time slices to facilitate simulation and modeling. In urban areas, a majority of the trips during peak periods are work trips. For illustration purposes, only peak period work trips are considered in this paper. The proposed methodology is based on the arrival pattern of trips at a traffic analysis zone (TAZ) and the distribution of their travel times. The travel time matrix for the peak period, the O-D trip table for the peak period, and the number of trips expected to arrive at each TAZ at different work start times are inputs to the model. The model outputs are O-D trip tables for each time slice in the peak period. 1995 data for the Las Vegas metropolitan area are considered for testing and validating the model, and its application. The model is reasonably robust, but some lack of precision was observed. This is due to two possible reasons: 1) rounding-off, and, 2) low ratio of total number of trips to total number of O-D pair combinations. Hence, an attempt is made to study the effect of increasing this ratio on error estimates. The ratio is increased by multiplying each O-D pair trip element with a scaling factor.
