Academic labor has expanded beyond the walls of academic institutions. Academics are expected to communicate with students online, use digital tools to complete their work, and share their research with broad audiences--often through online spaces like social media. Academics also face technology-facilitated violence and abuse (TFVA) in these same spaces. When this happens, employers have a responsibility to protect and support workers. However, recent events have shown that universities are not always prepared to do so. We use data from a discourse analysis of harassment and discrimination policies and interviews with university managers (including Vice President Academics/Provost, Faculty Deans, and directors of human rights offices) to examine how prepared Canadian universities and colleges are to support academics targeted by TFVA. We found that institutions are unprepared in three ways: first, they focus on physical safety over non-contact harms; second, they envision perpetrators to be named, local, and part of the campus community; and third, the reporting process is cumbersome and outpaced by the speed and frequency with which TFVA occurs. We consider these findings in the context of work-overflow and context collapse to demonstrate how the institutional apparatus for maintaining a safe and respectful working environment has not expanded in kind with the extensification of contemporary academic labor.

Given the increase in students with learning disabilities entering university, we investigated a broader group--students with a history of reading difficulties (HRD)--who are known to be at risk of academic struggles. We identified the self-reported reading challenges and strategies of university students with HRD (n = 49) and those with no history of reading difficulties (NRD; n = 88) and examined group differences and relations with first-year grade point average (GPA). Students with HRD reported more difficulties with perceived reading comprehension, concentration, and reading speed than students with NRD. Groups differed in use of reading strategies: Students with HRD were descriptively more likely to reduce reading volume by using alternative materials and chose to read based on text length and availability of alternative materials. For both groups, reading completion and concentration strategies were positively related to GPA, while perceived difficulty with reading comprehension and choosing to read based on interest were negatively related to GPA. Some strategies were negatively associated with GPA for students with NRD, but not for students with HRD. Findings revealed the challenges that students with HRD experience with reading in university and identified strategies, potentially adaptive or maladaptive, that they used to manage their academic reading load.

• Abetalipoproteinemia (ABL) is a rare monogenic familial hypobetalipoproteinemia caused by bi-allelic variants in MTTP gene. • We identified four French-Canadian patients homozygous for the same MTTP variant. • The ABL carrier frequency in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean is estimated at 1:203. • This represents the 2nd highest worldwide carrier estimates for ABL. • Screening for ABL should be considered in this population. Abetalipoproteinemia (ABL) is a rare recessive genetic disease caused by bi-allelic pathogenic variants in the microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTTP) gene. This disease is characterized by a deficiency in the secretion of apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins. Patients with ABL present with neurological, hematological, and gastrointestinal symptoms due to fat malabsorption and a deficiency in liposoluble vitamins. In this report, we present a total of four ABL cases, including three new cases, all originating from the same French-Canadian founder population in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Québec, Canada. These individuals are homozygous for the same pathogenic variant in the MTTP gene (c.419dup, p.Asn140Lysfs*2). We found that this variant is more common than anticipated in this population, with an estimated carrier frequency of 1:203. Early diagnosis is essential to initiate treatment known to prevent complications associated with ABL. Background: Globally, overweight and obesity affect over one-third of the global population and it is projected that by 2030 obesity will affect more than half of the world population. The current burden of overweight and obesity is attributed to high rates of unhealthy eating and physical inactivity as it had also been revealed in Tanzania. The substantially increased prevalence of malnutrition at young ages is associated with a high incidence of non-communicable diseases in the young population and ultimately increased premature deaths. Objectives: This study aimed to assess eating habits, physical exercise patterns, and the overweight/obesity status among undergraduate students at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted between January and March 2022 by employing a stratified sampling technique to recruit 232 undergraduate nursing students. A selfadministered questionnaire and anthropometric measurements were used to obtain data which were finally analyzed using SPSS version 25. Results: The prevalence of overweight/obesity was 20.2%. Approximately 43% of the participants were physically inactive, with a higher proportion among females compared to males p=0.001. Male participants were more likely to perform physical exercises for a longer duration (≥ 30 minutes per day) compared to female participants, p=0.008. The consumption of more than three meals per day was associated with an increased odds of being overweight/obese than the consumption of three meals or less per day (OR: 3.11; 95%CI: 1.11-8.73). Similarly, the average long duration of sleeping per day (eight hours or more) was associated with an increased odds of being overweight/obese than sleeping less than eight hours per day (OR: 2.08; 95%CI: 1.06-4.11). Conclusions: The findings revealed high rates of unhealthy eating habits, physical inactivity patterns and a significant prevalence of overweight/obesity. This indicates a need for developing actionable interventions and national health programs to promote healthy eating habits and physical activity, particularly among university students. Physical literacy (PL) is essential to the holistic human experience, emphasizing embodied capability and affording opportunities for inclusive engagement. Despite its recent use as a core programming element, PL from the experiential point of view of individuals experiencing disability has yet to be explored. Excluding these perspectives promotes a culture of ableism, one that devalues the embodied capabilities of those experiencing the world differently. The purpose of this study was to highlight the participant perspective related to PL and explore the value individuals experiencing disability attribute to PL and its development. Using the communities of practice theoretical model of knowledge as a conceptual framework, 13 participants experiencing disability participated in two focus groups. Participants' experiences were thematized via the use of thematic analysis, and voices were portrayed through composite narratives, highlighting the shared participant experience and value associated with PL. Three themes emerged: (1) imagine the possibilities , (2) dance like nobody's watching , and (3) no wrong way to move. Composite narratives reflect PL as a valued means of exploration and learning, personal growth, and opportunity related to physical activity and social interaction. Participant value was considered to be enhanced via a learning climate affording opportunities for developing autonomy and a sense of belonging. This research provides an authentic understanding of PL within the context of disability, and what might be used to facilitate its development in such an environment. Le contexte sanitaire lié à la pandémie COVID-19 a entraîné le développement rapide de nombreux vaccins contre le virus SarS-Cov-2. Quatre d'entre eux sont actuellement disponibles en France et contiennent comme excipients du polyethylène glycol (PEG) ou du polysorbate 80, déjà décrits comme pourvoyeurs d'anaphylaxie. Des recommandations françaises ont été suggérées par plusieurs instances d'allergologie et proposaient une conduite à tenir face à une suspicion d'allergie à ces vaccins. Ainsi, les allergies aux excipients constituaient la seule contre-indication à la vaccination anti COVID-19. Notre objectif principal était de déterminer l'impact de ces recommandations vaccinales d'allergologie sur la prise en charge de ces patients. Notre objectif secondaire était de déterminer la prévalence des allergies vraies à ces vaccins. Nous avons mené une étude rétrospective descriptive unicentrique concernant l'ensemble des patients de plus de 18 ans adressés pour un avis allergologique avant ou après une vaccination anti COVID-19. Les patients ont été classés en différents groupes d'intérêt, à partir des recommandations françaises. La vaste majorité des patients n'ont pas nécessité de bilan allergologique pré vaccinal. En effet, seulement 25 patients ont reçu des tests cutanés préalables à la vaccination. Le reste des patients ont pu être vaccinés sans bilan allergologique. Les patients non vaccinés pour cause d'allergie aux excipients représentent moins de 1 % de l'effectif total (n = 3/320). Les recommandations françaises ont permis de vacciner la grande majorité des patients inclus dans notre étude. L'allergie au PEG, polysorbate ou leurs dérivés, seule contre-indication à la vaccination anti COVID, d'après les recommandations de février 2021, reste rare. À ce jour, plusieurs auteurs proposent des inductions de tolérance permettant la vaccination de patients allergiques aux PEG ou à leurs dérivés avec une bonne tolérance. The health context with COVID-19 pandemic has led to fast development of many vaccines against the SarS-Cov-2 virus. Four of them are currently available in France and contain polyethylene glycol (PEG) or polysorbate 80 as excipients, already described as causing anaphylaxis. French recommendations have been suggested by allergology authorities and proposed a course of action in the event of a suspected allergy to these vaccines. Thus, allergies to excipients were the only contraindication to COVID-19 vaccination. Our main objective was to determine the impact of these allergology vaccine recommendations on the management of these patients. Our secondary objective was to determine prevalence of true allergies to these vaccines. We conducted a unicentric descriptive retrospective study with all patients over 18 years of age referred for an allergological opinion before or after an injection of one of the anti-COVID-19 vaccines. Nineteen patients were classified into different interest groups, based on french recommendations. The vast majority of patients did not require a pre-vaccination allergological assessment. Indeed, only 25 patients received skin tests prior to vaccination. The rest of patients were able to be vaccinated without allergological assessment. Patients not vaccinated due to allergy to excipients represent less than 1% of the population (n = 3/320). French recommendations made it possible to vaccinate the vast majority of patients included in our study. Allergy to PEG, polysorbate or their derivatives, the only contraindication to anti-COVID vaccination, according to the recommendations of February 2021, remains rare. Background: The randomized, sham-controlled RADIANCE-HTN (A Study of the Recor Medical Paradise System in Clinical Hypertension) SOLO, RADIANCE-HTN TRIO, and RADIANCE II (A Study of the Recor Medical Paradise System in Stage II Hypertension) trials independently met their primary end point of a greater reduction in daytime ambulatory systolic blood pressure (SBP) 2 months after ultrasound renal denervation (uRDN) in patients with hypertension. To characterize the longer-term effectiveness and safety of uRDN versus sham at 6 months, after the blinded addition of antihypertensive treatments (AHTs), we pooled individual patient data across these 3 similarly designed trials., Methods: Patients with mild to moderate hypertension who were not on AHT or with hypertension resistant to a standardized combination triple AHT were randomized to uRDN (n=293) versus sham (n=213); they were to remain off of added AHT throughout 2 months of follow-up unless specified blood pressure (BP) criteria were exceeded. In each trial, if monthly home BP was ≥135/85 mm Hg from 2 to 5 months, standardized AHT was sequentially added to target home BP <135/85 mm Hg under blinding to initial treatment assignment. Six-month outcomes included baseline- and AHT-adjusted change in daytime ambulatory, home, and office SBP; change in AHT; and safety. Linear mixed regression models using all BP measurements and change in AHT from baseline through 6 months were used., Results: Patients (70% men) were 54.1±9.3 years of age with a baseline daytime ambulatory/home/office SBP of 150.5±9.8/151.0±12.4/155.5±14.4 mm Hg, respectively. From 2 to 6 months, BP decreased in both groups with AHT titration, but fewer uRDN patients were prescribed AHT ( P =0.004), and fewer additional AHT were prescribed to uRDN patients versus sham patients ( P =0.001). Whereas the unadjusted between-group difference in daytime ambulatory SBP was similar at 6 months, the baseline and medication-adjusted between-group difference at 6 months was -3.0 mm Hg (95% CI, -5.7, -0.2; P =0.033), in favor of uRDN+AHT. For home and office SBP, the adjusted between-group differences in favor of uRDN+AHT over 6 months were -5.4 mm Hg (-6.8, -4.0; P <0.001) and -5.2 mm Hg (-7.1, -3.3; P <0.001), respectively. There was no heterogeneity between trials. Actinomycetes are a group of bacteria that have been reported as potential controllers of several plant pathogens and plant growth-promoting agents. This study focused on the isolation of 60 actinobacterial strains from the Cuatro Cienegas Basin, Coahuila, Mexico, with an emphasis on evaluating their potential as biocontrol agents against plant pathogens. Among the strains tested, the isolate PR69 exhibited significant in vitro antagonistic activity against eight plant pathogens, with inhibition rates ranging from 44% to 73%, including Phytophthora capsici. The genome of PR69 was sequenced and assembled. It was identified as Streptomyces by phylogenetic analysis based on concatenated multiple sequence alignments of 81 core bacterial genes. Additionally, volatile compounds produced by PR69 enhanced the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings in vitro, increasing seedling weight, primary root length, and the number of secondary roots. Furthermore, the soil treated with Streptomyces sp. PR69 effectively controlled the infection caused by the pathogen P. capsici in bell pepper plants, reducing mortality by 47% compared to plants inoculated solely with the pathogen. PR69-treated plants also showed 30% increase in fresh weight compared to untreated controls. These findings suggest that Streptomyces sp. PR69 holds promise as a bioinoculant for promoting pepper plant growth and controlling P. capsici populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An annotated checklist and taxonomic review of the spiders of Saint Helena is presented. A total of 88 genera and 114 species are known; of these, 12 genera and 45 species are endemic. Two new genera and two new species are described: Anapistula martinae Sherwood, Harvey, Fowler, Joshua, Stevens, Scipio-O'Dean & Ellick sp. nov., Helenidion Sherwood, Marusik, Fowler, Stevens & Joshua gen. nov., Ischnothyreus christyjoae Sherwood, Henrard, Peters, Stevens & Fowler sp. nov., and Trust Sherwood, Marusik, Wilkins, P. Ashmole & M. Ashmole gen. nov. Three new combinations are proposed: Helenidion sciaphilum (Benoit, 1977) comb. nov. (type species), Helenidion huberti (Benoit, 1977) comb. nov., and Zelotes funereus (Dalmas, 1921) comb. nov.Lepthyphantes albimaculatus (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1873) (Linyphiidae) is synonymized with Lepthyphantes leprosus (Ohlert, 1865) syn. nov.Lynxosa Roewer, 1960gen. rest. is restored to house the lycosids L. inexorabilis (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1870) comb. rest., L. ligata (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1870) comb. rest., L. nefasta (Tongiorgi, 1977) comb. nov., and L. veseyensis (Sherwood, Henrard, Logunov & Fowler, 2023) comb. nov. The previously undescribed sexes of Benoitodes sanctaehelenae (Strand, 1909) (Gnaphosidae), Hahnia laticeps Simon, 1898 (Hahniidae), Helenactyna crucifera (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1873) (Dictynidae, first known male for the genus), Paraheliophanus napoleonClark & Benoit, 1977 (Salticidae), and Trust solium (Benoit, 1977) comb. nov. (Theridiidae) are described. Bonapruncinia sanctaehelenae Benoit, 1977, originally described from juveniles, is supplemented with a first description of the adult female. Lectotypes and paralectotypes are designated for the salticid species Paraheliophanus subinstructus (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1873) and Pellenes inexcultus (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1873). Seven species are newly recorded from the island: Clubiona hitchinsiSaaristo, 2002 (Clubionidae), Latrodectus renivulvatus Dahl, 1902 (Theridiidae), Micropholcus fauroti (Simon, 1887) (Pholcidae), Oecobius marathaus Tikader, 1962 (Oecobiidae), Steatoda nobilis (Thorell, 1875) (Theridiidae), Theridion melanostictum O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1876 (Theridiidae), and Theridion proximum Lawrence, 1964 (Theridiidae). Partial discharge (PD) is one of the key factors leading to premature insulation failure of film capacitors used in pulse power devices. To study the effect of frequency on the PD characteristics of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film, a sphere-plate electrode was used to simulate defects of the air gap between the film layers. PD experiments of the BOPP film were carried out under 1, 10, 100, 500 Hz, and 1 kHz with a rising edge of 65 ns and a pulse width of 300 ns. The results show that the repetitive partial discharge inception voltage (RPDIV), the number of discharges, the rising stage discharge (RSD) amplitude, and the falling stage discharge (FSD) time-lag, all show an increase and then decrease with increasing pulse frequencies and reach a maximum value at a pulse frequency of 100 Hz. Moreover, the FSD discharge amplitude and the RSD discharge time-lag increase with an increasing pulse frequency. From the perspective of initial electron generation, the quantitative mathematical relationship between PD characteristics (RPDIV, PD amplitude, PD number, and PD time-lag) and frequency was established based on the Fowler–Nordheim field emission effect for the first time, which can reflect the influence of frequency on the memory effect and the development process of PD. The results can provide an experimental basis and a mechanistic explanation for the evaluation of PD characteristics for film capacitors under nanosecond pulse voltage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
