Biopolymers are materials specifically engineered to interact with biological systems. They can be derived from either natural or synthetic sources, depending on the biological resources used or the manufacturing process employed. Over recent decades, these materials have gained significant popularity within the medical field due to their remarkable attributes such as biodegradability, bioactivity, and compatibility with human tissue. One notable application is their use as scaffolds for bone regeneration. Biopolymers, being renewable biomaterials, provide opportunities for continuous manufacturing and technological progress across various industries. These biomaterials have demonstrated great promise in medical sectors, including nerve regeneration and the production of surgical devices. Additionally, their versatility extends to non-biomedical applications, like food packaging. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of different biopolymers, elucidating their properties, showcasing their latest applications, and delving into the state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies used in their production. Special emphasis is placed on their suitability as bone tissue repair and regeneration scaffolds, owing to their unique properties, which render them an ideal choice for this specific application. The manufacture of artificial heart valves is very challenging owing to their stringent functional requirements. The latest advances in 3D printing technologies hold great promise to revolutionise the manufacture of artificial heart valves. Recent 3D printing innovations go far beyond the fabrication of anatomical moulds, and unlock unprecedented opportunities to manufacture exquisite architectures, hierarchical bioprinting of cells, complex multi-material assembly, and the creation of biomimetic structures. This provides new avenues to enhance the functionality of artificial heart valves with respect to hydrodynamics, durability, biocompatibility, and the ability to be implanted via a minimally invasive transcatheter procedure. 3D printing technologies have the potential to revolutionize the manufacture of heart valves through the ability to create bespoke, complex constructs. In light of recent technological advances, we review the progress made towards 3D printing of heart valves, focusing on studies that have utilised these technologies beyond manufacturing patient-specific moulds. We first overview the key requirements of a heart valve to assess functionality. We then present the 3D printing technologies used to engineer heart valves. By referencing International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) Standard 5840 (Cardiovascular implants – Cardiac valve prostheses), we provide insight into the achieved functionality of these valves. Zirconia-based materials are widely used in dentistry due to their biocompatibility and suitable mechanical and tribological behavior. Although commonly processed by subtractive manufacturing (SM), alternative techniques are being explored to reduce material waste, energy consumption and production time. 3D printing has received increasing interest for this purpose. This systematic review intends to gather information on the state of the art of additive manufacturing (AM) of zirconia-based materials for dental applications. As far as the authors know, this is the first time that a comparative analysis of these materials' properties has been performed. It was performed following the PRISMA guidelines and using PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases to select studies that met the defined criteria without restrictions on publication year. Stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP) were the techniques most focused on in the literature and the ones that led to most promising outcomes. However, other techniques, such as robocasting (RC) and material jetting (MJ), have also led to good results. In all cases, the main concerns are centered on dimensional accuracy, resolution, and insufficient mechanical strength of the pieces. Despite the struggles inherent to the different 3D printing techniques, the commitment to adapt materials, procedures and workflows to these digital technologies is remarkable. The technological advancement of robotic automation in construction allows for the identification of a renewed design agenda at the intersection of professional practice, academic research, higher education, and the cultural context in which innovations take place. This paper outlines research conducted in the field of large scale digital robotic additive manufacturing at Lawrence Technological University, College of Architecture and Design, in collaboration with the artchitecture firm Daub and the start-up Citizen Robotics in Metro Detroit. The creation of a prototype for a temporary installation is used to assess the building feasibility of a home scheduled for completion in 2023, in which a portion of the exterior will be 3D printed. This review summarizes the most recent advances from technological and physico-chemical perspectives to improve several remaining issues in polymeric materials' additive manufacturing (AM). Without a doubt, AM is experimenting with significant progress due to technological innovations that are currently advancing. In this context, the state-of-the-art considers both research areas as working separately and contributing to developing the different AM technologies. First, AM techniques' advantages and current limitations are analyzed and discussed. A detailed overview of the efforts made to improve the two most extensively employed techniques, i.e., material extrusion and VAT-photopolymerization, is presented. Aspects such as the part size, the possibility of producing parts in a continuous process, the improvement of the fabrication time, the reduction of the use of supports, and the fabrication of components using more than one material are analyzed. The last part of this review complements these technological advances with a general overview of the innovations made from a material perspective. The use of reinforced polymers, the preparation of adapted high-temperature materials, or even the fabrication of metallic and ceramic parts using polymers as supports are considered. Finally, the use of smart materials that enable the fabrication of shape-changing 3D objects and sustainable materials will also be explored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
