Digitalization has intensified globalization and economic interactivity between countries both developed and developing, increasing the complexity and lack of transparency in economic activities. The increase in digital transactions poses a remarkable challenge for tax authorities yet the digital economy is slowly replacing traditional commercialization and transactions. Conventional international tax legislation has not kept abreast with the growth and complexity of the digital economy and its accompanying challenges with respect to taxation. In view of the infant nature of digital tax legislation in African countries as well as the auspicious possibility of increasing tax revenue to fund public expenditure together with the probability of contradictory outcomes of digital tax policy, through a critical literature review this paper assesses digital taxation through direct digital service taxes (DSTs) in Africa. The findings were mixed. While the possibility of tax revenue maximization and improved economic growth were persuasive, the arguments pointing to negative externalities emanating from poor digital service tax policy design were equally pragmatic. Purpose: The impact of financial inclusion on economic growth is a topic that is generating widespread interest among researchers and practitioners. In this paper, the authors review the existing literature to highlight the state of research in the literature and identify new opportunities for innovative research. Design/methodology/approach: The authors used a thematic literature review methodology which involves dividing the review along relevant themes. Findings: The authors find that significant research on the topic emerged in the post-2016 years. Most of the existing studies are from developing countries and from the Asian and African regions. Existing studies have not utilized relevant theories in explaining the impact of financial inclusion on economic growth. Most studies report a positive impact of financial inclusion on economic growth while very few studies show a negative impact. The most common channel through which financial inclusion affects economic growth is through greater access to financial products and services offered by financial institutions that increases financial intermediation and translates to positive economic growth. The common empirical methodology used in the literature are causality tests, cointegration and regression methods. Multiple proxies of financial inclusion and economic growth were used in the literature which partly explains the conflicting result among existing studies. The review paper concludes by identifying some directions for future research. Originality/value: This paper presents the first rigorous thematic review of the existing literature on the impact of financial inclusion on economic growth. It highlights the main approach that researchers have taken on this topic and identifies some important research areas for future investigation. This paper assesses the relationship between trade openness and economic growth in Africa by accounting for the heterogeneity of African countries. In addition, the paper contributes to the literature on trade openness and economic growth nexus by applying the instrumental variable panel smooth transition regression, a methodology that accounts for nonlinearity and endogeneity in the relationship between the two variables. The results of the empirical analysis reveal that the investment ratio is a channel through which trade openness affects economic growth in the African continent. In addition, the relationship between trade openness and economic growth varies according to the degree of a country's development in Africa. The study finds a negative relationship between openness and growth in low‐income countries. Conversely, for upper‐income countries, the coefficients of trade indicators are positive and statistically significant. Mapping of research has become important across the world and any new technology requires a new institutional framework for mapping appropriate outcomes of research. It involves analyzing linkages between various actors, stakeholders, agencies, and institutions to map potential research domains. Over the years, Biotechnology Applied Microbiology has emerged as a niche area, and this sector is recognized as the key driver for economic growth and development. Biotechnology has emerged as a promising area of research in selected African countries but requires expanding its S&T base. To enhance S&T-based and capacity building Africa has initiated to expand its collaborative efforts with other countries including Europe, Asia, the US, the Middle East, and Africa with promising results in different areas like nanotechnology, biotechnology, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, etc. Biotechnology is one of the emerging areas and African biotechnology has the potential to transform the economy. Therefore, this paper presents an analysis of the emerging pattern of research areas in selected African countries and in particular biotechnology research activities in Africa. More than 56000 research articles were analyzed, using SPSS software, indicates that R&D collaboration and national as well as international networks could be helpful in enhancing publication output and research competency in the field of biotechnology research in Africa. In a context where many African populations are excluded from the traditional banking system, financial inclusion appears to be a determining factor in enabling agents in need of financing, notably producers and consumers, to have easy access to financial services in order to contribute to the multiple efforts of economic and social progress of nations. However, to date, the literature remains silent on the optimal level of financial inclusion that can boost growth. Consequently, this paper aims to verify whether there is a non-linear relationship between economic growth and financial inclusion in the WAEMU zone. Econometric applications based on the PCSE (panel-corrected standard error) model on a panel of eight countries for the period 2014–2018 reveal a U-shaped relationship between the extended banking rate and economic growth. Economic growth shows two different behaviours depending on whether one is on the side of one or the other of the regimes inherent to the inflection point. In view of these results, we suggest that the public authorities: i) intensify campaigns to open accounts in local languages, ii) promote the development of online sales applications for goods and services, iii) pursue the dematerialisation of financial operations within public administrations. This paper measures the macroeconomic influence of recent political crisis, protest and uprisings in Africa with the generalized synthetic control method and evaluates the role played by natural resource dependence on the modulation of the nexus. We find that political crisis, protests and uprisings have a significant and negative nexus with economic growth while the nexus is positive with investment and price level. For economic growth, the deviation of the actual series from the counterfactual is negative, instantaneous, persistent and highly significant; indicating non-negligible costs of the shock. Indeed, dependence on natural resources amplifies the negative influence of political crisis, protests and uprisings on GDP. Finally, the more the treated country depends on natural resources, the more it becomes resilient to the investment losses caused by political crisis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to investigate the deterministic relationships between foreign direct investment, official development assistance and economic growth for a selection of 20 African countries, under dynamic economic circumstances, over nineteen years presented by the periods before, during, and after the global financial crisis (2000-2018; 2000-2006; 2007-2010; 2011-2018) within the African context. We adopted the two-step system GMM model as an estimation technique to analyze economic data sourced from the World Bank's WDI database. We found that a positive deterministic relationship exists between FDI and economic growth in all the time periods (2000-2018) and for each individual period (2000-2006; 2011-2018) for the sampled countries. However, there is a negative relationship between FDI and economic growth during the global financial crisis (2007-2010) period. Further, no significant deterministic relationship exists between ODA and economic growth for the periods and countries under review. Based on our findings, we recommend that African countries should design investment strategies, favorable to both local and foreign investors and to move away from official development aid reliance. Several studies have used various datasets and methodologies to analyze the relationship between bilateral trade and income convergence among trading partners. However, most studies have not paid attention to the effect that income levels and nature of bilateral trade have on the speed of income convergence. In this paper, we argue that the income levels of trading partners and the nature of bilateral trade play important role in the relationship between bilateral trade and international income convergence. To account for the effect of income levels of trading partners, this paper presents an approach that explicitly accounts for bilateral trade among high-income (OECD) countries, bilateral trade between high-income and low-income (SSA) countries, and bilateral trade among low-income (SSA) countries. We also used total trade data for 25 OECD countries and 30 Sub-Saharan African countries over the period 1980-2018 to avoid the potential bias for selecting certain countries based on arbitrary percentage of trade relationship. We used the 2SLS estimations technique to avoid endogeneity problems due to the nature of the dataset. The paper finds that the bilateral trade-income convergence relationship for OECD to SSA is the strongest. This result throws light on the claim that the nature of bilateral trade between high-income and low-income countries promotes one directional knowledge spillover from high-income to low-income countries which enables low-income countries to adopt new technologies and grow faster than their high-income counterparts. Also, bilateral trade among OECD countries, which mostly comprises of differentiated products, promotes descent income convergence among them. However, bilateral trade among SSA countries has the least effect on income convergence. Findings of the study have important implications for bilateral trade among low-income countries and between low income and high income countries. First, if SSA countries want to develop and catch up with their rich counterparts, they should continue to promote free trade with high income countries by dismantling remaining protection policies. Second, the African Continental Free Trade Area's (AfCFTA) efforts to boost the manufacturing sector through industrialization is in the right direction to promote the production of more differentiated products in Africa which will create growth in income for member countries as they trade more. Finally, there is the need for SSA countries to increase investment rates and improve human capital accumulation to enable them to accelerate the adoption of new technologies and grow faster than their high-income counterparts, while bridging the income gap between them through trade. A panel data analysis of nonlinear financial growth dynamics in a macroprudential policy regime was conducted on a panel of 10 African emerging countries from 1985–2021, where there had been a non-prudential regime from 1985–1999 and a prudential regime from 2000–2021. The paper explored the validity of the inverted U-shape hypothesis in the prudential policy regime as well as the threshold level at which excessive finance boosts growth using the Bayesian Spatial Lag Panel Smooth Transition Regression (BSPSTR) model. The BSPSTR model was adopted due to its ability to address the problems of endogeneity and heterogeneity in a nonlinear framework. Moreover, as the transition variable often varies across time and space, the effect of the independent variables can also be time- and space-varying. The results reveal evidence of a nonlinear effect between finance and growth, where the optimal level of financial development is found to be 92% of GDP, above which financial development decreases growth. The findings confirmed the Greenwood and Jovanovic hypothesis of an inverted U-shape relationship. Macroprudential policies were found to trigger the finance–growth relationship. The policy recommendation is that the financial sector should be given adequate consideration and recognition by, for example, implementing appropriate financial reforms, developing a suitable investment portfolio, and keeping spending on technological investment in Africa's emerging countries below the threshold. Purpose: This paper empirically investigated the impact of high government debt on economic growth, using a panel data of 12 developing countries in Africa for the period between 1991 and 2020. Furthermore, it sought to find the existence of nonlinearity between government debt and economic growth. The study used a cross-country panel data approach estimated through the panel smooth transition regression to find the threshold effect. The results reveal a threshold of 60.5% of government debt on economic growth, suggesting an inverted U-shaped relationship between government debt and economic growth for the whole sample. After this threshold, additional government debt starts impeding economic growth. The estimated slope parameter of 18.11 supports the smoothness of government debt from a low regime to a high regime of debt. In the lower debt regime, government debt boosts economic growth; however as the level of debt growth surpasses the peak point, economic growth decreases. By implication, policymakers should have strict debt management policies in place to keep the level of government debt low, and be able to respond robustly to an economic shock. While resorting to borrowing to finance public spending, especially during economic crises, may be an imperative, it should be done in a circumspect manner so that the borrowings are kept at tolerable levels and reduced and/or repaid when there is a recovery in the economy. This paper examined finance-growth nexus in the finance industry and the influencing factors of economic indicators which deliberate on the performance of the Solow Growth model to prove the actuality of financial development (FD) inside the economic growth (EG) model, based on the regional data from 1980 to 2017 in Africa. We applied the econometric method of GMM style panel vector autoregressive (PVAR) and panel quantile regression (PQR). With the optimal finance-growth outcome, the review shows that the economic indicators influence the finance-growth nexus. The quantile results show that high economic indicators help to strengthen the finance-growth nexus, whereas low economic indicators hinder it. The GMM style PVAR results present a mixed effect in terms of the connection and marginal significance, indicating that FD has a varied impact on economic growth. Last, the granger causality results show a two-way causal association amid finance-growth in Western, Central, Eastern, and Southern African economies and a unidirectional causal link of finance-growth in Northern Africa. The policy conclusion is that to gain the long-term economic benefits of FD, African countries should strive for low and steady economic stability. Scholars and practitioners are torn between diverging viewpoints on the contribution of foreign assistance and foreign direct investment to the economic development, economic growth, and prosperity of Africa. This paper aims to examine the long-term and causal relationship between foreign direct investment, official development assistance, and economic growth for 20 selected African countries from 2000–2018. Autoregressive distributed lags and the error correction model were used as the primary estimation techniques. The results indicated a notable positive long-term cointegrating relationship between official development assistance and economic growth, and between economic growth and foreign direct investment, as well as a cointegrating link between foreign direct investment and official development assistance. Economic growth was found to promote official development assistance, while foreign direct investment was found to encourage economic growth and official development assistance was found to promote economic growth in the long run. Since foreign direct investment and official development assistance are important to economic growth in a spiral effect, African countries are encouraged to put in place policies that attract foreign direct investment and official development assistance. Thus, African countries should align their foreign and domestic investment and official development aid policies with their national developmental goals to attract foreign donations and investments. The paper employs partial and biwavelet coherence techniques to examine the time-frequency dependence structure of international remittance inflow on economic growth by moderating the effect of exchange rates. We investigate the comovements of remittance and economic growth from 1980 to 2020. We observed heterogeneous patterns in the comovements structure of international remittance inflow and economic growth at various timescales. By examining the biwavelet coherence, the comovements are noticeable at elevated occurrences, implying that exchange rates, when acting as moderator in the nexus between remittance and economic growth, can hamper economic growth. Findings from the partial wavelet coherence reveal that exchange rates influence remittance and economic growth connectedness in emerging and frontier economies in Africa. Consequently, in situations where radical changes occur in exchange rates, the implemented policies of emerging African countries seem to have largely influenced the comovements between remittance inflow and economic growth. The risk posed by exchange rates on remittance inflow requires sustainable policies to prevent widespread spillovers, mostly during severe economic downturns. Although energy supply is not the only factor of the production function, it remains an important driver for any economy despite its negative environmental impacts. This paper examines the determinants of carbon dioxide emissions in a sample of 35 African countries from 1980 to 2016. It uses several econometric methods to ensure robust and reliable findings. Results from Mean group (MG) and Dynamic common correlated effects mean group (DCCEMG) models prove that the environmental degradation in the selected sample is caused mostly by economic growth and non-renewable energy consumption. Moreover, the results confirm that the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis is not significant when consider cross sectional dependence. These finding are contradictive to those obtained from similar studies that used traditional panel estimators. This means that energy consumption and economic growth will continue to increase emissions in the future. Furthermore, the study provides evidence of bidirectional causal relationships between carbon dioxide emissions and economic growth, non-renewable energy consumption and economic growth and between non-renewable energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. These findings imply that a hard work must to be done by the African policymakers and a long corrective measure series have to be adopted to ensure more efficient and clean energy. This paper analyses the role of renewable energy, ecological footprint and institutions on economic growth (measured by per capita GDP) in Francophone Africa using the generalised method of moments (GMM). The results show that renewable energy is negatively correlated with economic growth, which is likely attributable to the high share of woody biomass in these countries. For ecological footprint, the correlation is positive and statistically significant, which links economic growth to environmental degradation. Among the institutional variables, voice and accountability, political stability and the rule of law have a positive significant effect on economic growth while governance effectiveness, regulatory quality and control of corruption are positively related but do not have a statistically significant effect. The insignificant relationship between governance effectiveness, regulatory quality, control of corruption and economic growth implies that institutions in Francophone African countries are under-developed. Thus, strengthening the forms of institutions will promote growth in these countries. This study therefore contributes to the view that economic growth not only emerges with environmental degradation but that it can be improved with renewable energy and robust institutions. Consequently, it is recommended that policymakers develop policies that raise growth with a focus on improving the quality of the environment. These policies include incorporating pollution taxes to discourage foreign companies from polluting the environment and encouraging renewable energy consumption through public investment, as well as changes in fiscal and financial policies (including carbon taxes, grants and incentives). Likewise, policies that facilitate the deployment of renewable technologies with free or low-cost installations for low-income households should be implemented. This paper examined the nexus between economic growth and exchange rate, remittances, trade, and agricultural output based on data sourced from 1980 to 2018 for 10 selected African economies. We employed both the Dumitrescu and Hurlin time-domain Granger causality test and the Croux and Reusens frequency domain Granger causality test. Results from the time-domain test suggests that causality only exists between economic growth and both exchange rate and trade, with no significant relationship between economic growth and both remittances and agricultural output. When we employed frequency domain model in our analysis, the results suggested that there is a bi-directional temporary and permanent causality between economic growth and exchange rate, trade, agriculture, and remittances. Our results suggest the validity of both the J-Curve and Marshall–Lerner hypotheses in the studied economies. Our study offers some relevant policy implications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we question whether night light luminosity data can be used as an alternative measure of gdp in 49 African countries. For this to be proven true, evidence of significant relationships between night light data and gdp time series variables needs to be confirmed through empirical analysis. In differing from previous studies, we employ pooled mean group (pmg) cross sectional cointegration estimators and wavelet coherence tools to examine the cointegration relationships and time-frequency synchronizations between gdp and dmsp-ols night light intensity for annual data collected between 1992 and 2012. All in all, we find little evidence of significant relationships between nighttime data and gdp for individual African countries and therefore caution policymakers in strictly using dmsp-ols data to create synthetic measures of economic growth. This paper examines the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows on host country's economic growth for a group of 45 developing countries for the period 1990–2014. Using the pooled mean group (PMG) regression method, we estimate the long-run and the short-run impact of FDI inflows on growth rate of GDP per capita. The PMG regression results suggest that the growth rate of GDP per capita and its covariates are cointegrated, implying the presence of a long-run equilibrium relationship among the variables. Our results suggest that FDI inflows have significant positive impact on economic growth of the recipient countries both in the long-run and in the short-run. We find that the long-run effect of FDI inflows on economic growth is higher in the emerging market economies as compared to the non-emerging market economies. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse concerning the efficiency of public capital and its influence on the productivity of private capital and total factor productivity within African economies. Employing the standard production approach, we include public capital as a distinct input to assess its specific impact on output growth and the enhancement of total factor productivity. We argue that public capital, predominantly manifesting through infrastructure, constitutes an indispensable element for fostering growth. Fundamental to the productivity of private capital is its reliance on a sufficient stock of public infrastructure for operational efficiency. Our empirical analysis reveals that public capital exhibits a substantive long-term influence on output growth and the productivity of private capital. However, in the short term, the discernible impact of public capital is less pronounced. Moreover, while public capital emerges as a noticeable factor in output growth, its influence on total factor productivity remains relatively subdued. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reach and scope of microinsurance have expanded considerably over the last couple of decades. The literature on microinsurance focuses predominantly on its microeconomic impact. In contrast, I examine the contemporaneous and intertemporal effect of microinsurance on economic development using rich census data of microinsurance coverage in African economies. Estimates suggest that microinsurance affects economic growth both on impact and over time, with the magnitude of the intertemporal effect exceeding that of the contemporaneous effect. Evidence also suggests nonlinearities in the microinsurance–growth nexus. The marginal effect of microinsurance is a negative function of the starting level of development. For low-income countries, microinsurance has a robust positive effect on economic growth, both in terms of impact and over time. However, microinsurance may fail to leave a lasting trace on the aggregate economy in "richer" developing countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the short- and long-run impacts of real income, merchandise exports, foreign direct investment, real interest rate and jet fuel prices on air cargo demand in four African countries for the period 1980–2019. Annual data on all the variables were analyzed using cointegration and error-correction modelling techniques. Empirical results reveal long-run equilibrium relationship among the variables. The impact of the variables on air cargo demand vary across the countries. Gross domestic product per capita is a major determinant of air cargo demand in Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa in the short and long term. Real income positively influenced air cargo demand in these countries. For Kenya, real interest rate has positive long-run effect on air cargo demand. The relationship between trade and growth as well as governance and growth especially in developing countries has been well researched but is yet concluded. In this light, this study examined the roles of trade openness and governance on economic growth in the East African Community (EAC) and West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) member countries. Using the fixed effect panel estimation approach, data covering the period between 2002 and 2020 were analysed for 14 countries, including a disaggregation by bloc. The results suggested that trade openness encourages economic growth in the full sample in the countries. Meanwhile, governance supports economic growth in the full sample and WAEMU sub-sample with an insignificant impact on EAC sub-sample. The results affirm the importance of multilevel integration among the EAC as compared to the WAEMU bloc. The study concludes that growth is achievable through openness of trade and the extent to which governance supports growth depends on the level of integration among regional blocs since due to integration, benefits of good governance or negative consequences of bad governance can spread across countries. Nonrenewable energy makes up a sizeable portion of Africa's gross domestic product. The continent heavily relies on nonrenewable energy sources, such as gasoline, for industrial and commercial uses, which helps it expand and develop, especially in oil-producing nations. Incorporating nonrenewable energies when analyzing the relative effects of renewable energy consumption and economic growth on environmental quality is paramount. The transition to renewable energy has been identified as a contributing factor in clean energy and sustainable development, but the consumption of renewable energy in Africa is negligible. This study employed panel threshold regression and covered data from 1990 to 2019, and examined the non-linear relationship between renewable energy consumption, economic growth, and environmental quality. According to the study's findings, the consumption of renewable energy has a nonlinearly negative relationship with carbon emission proxied environmental quality. The relationship between environmental quality and economic growth was also shown to be nonlinearly positive, pointing to the dominance of nonrenewable resources in the African industry. The study examined the tripartite role of the economic, environmental, and socio-political factors on renewable energy adoption in Africa and noted that a positive relationship exists between economic and renewable energy adoption, supporting the validity of the feedback hypothesis. Hence, a policy that supports simultaneous growth of the economy and renewable energy could be adopted. The results further show that environmental factors such as carbon emission and ecological footprint negatively impact renewable energy (RE) adoption in Sub-Saharan African economies. The impact of socio-political factors is, at best mixed; for instance, the result of urbanization is positive and significant, suggesting that urbanization helps in the quick adoption of renewable energy in the studied economies, while the results of corruption show otherwise. To account for single-country dynamics, the study employed the full PMG and noted that the pollution haven hypothesis holds for a number of African economies. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7, 11, and 12 are all aimed at advancing green energy consumption in the fight against the three planetary crises facing the world today: climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Besides, Africa has an abundance of natural resources, yet, the continent continues to witness slow growth and development compared to its counterparts. Therefore, this study, the first of its kind, simultaneously assesses the impact of green energy consumption and natural resources rents on economic growth by applying the dynamic panel ARDL and the Feasible Generalized Least Square (FGLS) estimators on data from 1990 to 2020 for 24 selected African countries. The results show that green energy consumption has a short-run growth-limiting and a long-run growth-enhancing effect in Africa. Also, CO2 emissions have both short- and long-run significant positive impacts on economic growth, while fossil fuel combustion negatively impacts growth both in the short and long run, albeit the effect is not significant in the long run. Similarly, regarding Africa's natural resource rents' impact on growth, the results show that total natural resource rents are growth-enhancing in the short run and growth-limiting in the long run. Additionally, both forest and mineral rents have a significant short-run negative impact on growth in Africa. However, in the long run, only the effect of mineral rent is growth-enhancing although generally not statistically significant. These findings provide relevant implications for policy shifts to enhance environmental sustainability, achieve sustainable economic growth, and ensure proper natural resources management in Africa. Purpose: The literature argues that human activities are responsible for environmental pollution and world climate change. Africa is the second-largest continent by population and its socio-economic conditions are adversely affected by climate change due to environmental pollution. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between human activities, the environment and the economic growth of 38 African countries from 2000 to 2018. Design/methodology/approach: This study employs a simultaneous equations model called Seemingly unrelated regression. Findings: Human capital development (HDI) and environmental health (EH) have a positive and non-linear relationship, while HDI and ecosystem vitality (EV) are negative and non-linear. The relationship between gross domestic product per capita (GDPPC) and EH is negative and non-linear. However, the GDPPC-EV link is insignificant. Trade openness (TO) and EV have a negative and non-linear relationship, but trade significantly improves EH. Urbanisation-EV relationship is positive and non-linear. However, urbanisation significantly reduces EH. Technology has a positive and non-linear relationship with EH and EV. The study also found that EH and EV positively affects the economy. Originality/value: This is the first study to analyse the most concerned countries in-depth. Thus, it provides appropriate and sound policies that consider the unique characteristics of the nations. Moreover, it uses a robust estimation technique that overcomes the endogeneity problem and offers insight into the relationship between the variables, including the feedback effect of the environment on growth. The debate on the natural resource curse hypothesis has attracted the attention of policy makers and policy analysts for the past few decades. However, the empirical findings on such a hypothesis have proven inconclusive. Our study investigates the threshold effects of natural resource dependence on economic growth in sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) using both aggregate and disaggregate data from 1990 to 2019 by employing a threshold effect model. The results indicate a double threshold effect of natural resource rent on economic growth. In particular, below 6% of GDP, aggregate natural resource rent exerts a significant negative effect on economic growth. However, as the rents increase above 6% to about 15% of GDP its negative effect on economic growth significantly reduces. In addition, beyond 15% of GDP natural resource rent exhibit a substantial significant positive impact on economic growth. Further, the disaggregated data reveal that forest rents exhibit a strong weighty adverse effect on economic growth at all levels of thresholds. The study recommends that governments within the sub-region need to put in policies to ensure that natural resources generate at least 15% of GDP annually to promote growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has disrupted lives across all countries and communities. It significantly reduced the global economic output and dealt health systems across the world a serious blow. There is growing evidence showing the progression of the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact it has on health systems, which should help to draw lessons for further consolidating and realizing universal health coverage (UHC) in all countries, complemented by more substantial government commitment and good governance, and continued full implementation of crucial policies and plans to avert COVID-19 and similar pandemic threats in the future. Therefore, the objective of the study was to assess the impact of good governance, economic growth and UHC on the COVID-19 infection rate and case fatality rate (CFR) among African countries.Methods: We employed an analytical ecological study design to assess the association between COVID-19 CFR and infection rate as dependent variables, and governance, economic development and UHC as independent variables. We extracted data from publicly available databases (i.e., Worldometer, Worldwide Governance Indicators, Our World in Data and WHO Global Health Observatory Repository). We employed a multivariable linear regression model to examine the association between the dependent variables and the set of explanatory variables. STATA version 14 software was used for data analysis.Results: All 54 African countries were covered by this study. The median observed COVID-19 CFR and infection rate were 1.65% and 233.46%, respectively. Results of multiple regression analysis for predicting COVID-19 infection rate indicated that COVID-19 government response stringency index (β = 0.038; 95% CI 0.001, 0.076; P = 0.046), per capita gross domestic product (GDP) (β = 0.514; 95% CI 0.158, 0.87; P = 0.006) and infectious disease components of UHC (β = 0.025; 95% CI 0.005, 0.045; P = 0.016) were associated with COVID-19 infection rates, while noncommunicable disease components of UHC (β = -0.064; 95% CI -0.114; -0.015; P = 0.012), prevalence of obesity among adults (β = 0.112; 95% CI 0.044; 0.18; P = 0.002) and per capita GDP (β = -0.918; 95% CI -1.583; -0.254; P = 0.008) were associated with COVID-19 CFR.Conclusions: The findings indicate that good governance practices, favourable economic indicators and UHC have a bearing on COVID-19 infection rate and CFR. Effective health system response through a primary healthcare approach and progressively taking measures to grow their economy and increase funding to the health sector to mitigate the risk of similar future pandemics would require African countries to move towards UHC, improve governance practices and ensure economic growth in order to reduce the impact of pandemics on populations. The environmental repercussions of extensive carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions on the environment are crucial for policymakers and scholars. The repercussions of and connection between economic growth (ECG), tourism (TOUR), and foreign direct investment (FDI) on CO2 emission mitigation have been measured and argued from empirical and theoretical perspectives by scholars. Notwithstanding, the extant body of knowledge has failed to incorporate and investigate the function of governance in decarbonizing tourism activities and FDI from CO2 emissions to attain a healthy and quality environment in Africa. Hence, this current research investigates governance's role in the reduction processes of CO2 emissions grounded in environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) conceptual assumptions for panel data spanning 2000 through 2020 for 27 African countries. This research utilized the Westerlund panel cointegration approach for the investigation of the cointegration of the selected variables. This study applied the Driscoll–Kraay regression approach for the long-term estimation. In addition, the dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) and the pooled mean group (PMG) were used for robustness checks. The findings of this research indicated that the governance (GOV) indicators employed have a statistically significant effect on the CO2 emission reduction. Besides, this study found that the appreciation of the income of the nations gives credence to the formation of the EKC theory and contributes to the decline in CO2 emissions within the selected African nations. The findings revealed that tourism, FDI, ECG, and GOV are positive and significant factors leading to increased CO2 emissions in Africa. Furthermore, the results showed that effective governance and control of FDI inflows and tourism activities can support decarbonization. Studies have continued to emerge on the transmission channels through which finance influences growth. It has been argued that more finance without efficient institutions may not yield more growth. Meanwhile, studies on sub-Saharan Africa are sparse. None of existing studies have examined the moderating effect of institutions on finance–growth nexus in Southern Africa despite the weak institutions in the sub-region. Deviating from extant studies, this study contributes to general discussion by taking care of cross-sectional dependence among countries within an economic bloc. Driscoll and Kraay's nonparametric covariance matrix estimator is used to take care of cross-sectional dependence. The research outputs reveal that institutional quality complements and stimulates the growth benefits of financial development in Southern African countries. It is further established that institutional quality has to persistently be above the threshold of 6.08 on the ordinal scale of 10 point before institution can strongly stimulate and complement financial development to impact positively on growth. This study, therefore, recommends that there is an urgent need for Southern African countries to strengthen and improve the quality of institutions so as to maximize the growth benefits of financial development. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of adopting information and communication technologies (ICT) on the development of African stock exchanges. The study examined a panel of 11 African stock exchanges for the period 2008–2017 and employed the generalised method of moments (GMM) to estimate the results. The results of the study documented that ICT adoption had a positive impact on stock market development in African countries. Firstly, it was found that the stock market traded volume and mobile–telephone user variables were positively related. Secondly, a positive relationship was also proven between the stock market traded volume and the broadband user variable. Thirdly, a positive relationship was documented between the stock market capitalisation variable and the fixed telephone user variable. Fourthly, the research findings confirmed a positive relationship between the stock market turnover ratio and the fixed telephone user variable. The findings of this study imply that policymakers should be more resolute when formulating ICT policies. ICT adoption can spur stock market development which in turn can propel economic growth, resulting in the economic prosperity of the African countries. Decoupling energy, water, and food (EWF) consumption and production from GHG emissions could be an important strategy for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and SDG 7 (Clean and Affordable Energy) in Africa. This study applies Tapio's decoupling method to analyze the relationship between GHG emissions and EWF resources use in 15 African countries over the period 1990–2017. The results show a remarkable relationship, which includes the contamination of EWF by GHG emissions, that mostly exhibits unsatisfactory decoupling state to satisfactory decoupling over a period of several years. The decoupling of water and energy resources from GHG emissions in most countries of Africa has not been able to reach an excellent decoupling state or a strong positive decoupling state. This requires countries in Africa to support environmentally friendly water and energy infrastructures and to promote an integrated, mutually managed, whole resource interaction system. Africa is endowed with both natural resources and a young growing workforce. In light of this, it is obvious that regulations on labour markets will have significant impacts on economic growth, especially through effects on employment and productivity. This study provides information on labour market regulations (labour market flexibility) and their impacts on economic growth in Africa. In particular, this study examines the impact of labour market flexibility (regulations) on economic growth (real GDP per capita growth) relying on the Driscoll-Kraay fixed-effects estimator and the two-step system generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation techniques using data from 2000 to 2019 for 37 African countries. The results show a positive correlation, indicating that liberalizing rigid labour market regulations can lead to economic growth benefits. Specifically, it is observed that economic growth increases by approximately 0.16% resulting from a unit (one standard deviation) increase in labour market flexibility. The study also finds that economic growth (real GDP per capita growth) is high in countries that have flexible hour regulations, flexible mandatory costs of worker dismissal, and the absence of (or not strictly enforced) military conscription. These findings have important implications for African governments and policymakers as they may find it useful to liberalize the prevailing rigid labour market regulations to reap economic growth benefits.
