The primary aim of this study was to determine whether an electronic, multicenter data collection system could be used to establish normal population reference values for the Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (HOOS) and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). The secondary aim was to investigate differences in asymptomatic HOOS and WOMAC values reported in 2 geographically distinct English-speaking countries and compare these with a symptomatic arthritic patient cohort. A total of 552 participants were recruited. Asymptomatic Australian and Canadian cohorts were compared; combined asymptomatic cohorts were compared with an arthritic cohort. There was a statistically significant association between age and asymptomatic HOOS (P<.0001) and WOMAC (P<.0001) values; as age increased, values worsened. Females had worse HOOS and WOMAC values (P<.0001). When compared with age- and sex-matched asymptomatic participants, arthritic participants had worse scores (P<.0001). Asymptomatic Australians had a statistically significant 3.8% better (higher) HOOS (P<.0001) in all age groups (P<.0001). When compared with age- and sex-matched asymptomatic participants, younger arthritic participants reported worse activities of daily living and sports and recreation HOOS values. This observational study established an electronic HOOS and WOMAC patient-reported outcome measures database of asymptomatic individuals in 2 geographically distinct countries. An asymptomatic control group should be sourced from the same country of origin as the proposed study. Factors that should be considered when recording the HOOS and WOMAC include age, sex, geographic location, history of an inactive hip problem, contralateral hip disease, and active knee, ankle, or foot problems. The purpose of this study was to establish normal asymptomatic population values for the Disability of Arm, Shoulder and Hand and Patient-Rated Wrist/Hand Evaluation in healthy, asymptomatic individuals of different age, gender, ethnicity, handedness and nationality, using electronic data collection. Two-hundred and ninety-two Australian and 293 Canadian citizens with no active wrist pain, injury or pathology in their dominant hand, were evaluated. Participants completed an electronically administered questionnaire and were assessed clinically. There was no statistically significant association between both wrist scores and nationality. There was a statistically significant association between both wrist scores and age, demonstrating that as age increased, normal wrist function declined. This study has established an electronic, asymptomatic control group for future studies using these scores. The aim of this study was to assess whether the Harris Hip Score (HHS) and the Oxford Hip Score (OHS) were comparable in normal, healthy, pathology-free individuals of different age, gender, ethnicity, handedness and nationality. The purpose of this study was to establish normal population values for the HHS and OHS using an electronic data collection system.~Background~Background~317 Australian and 310 Canadian citizens with no active hip pain, injury or pathology in the ipsilateral hip corresponding to their dominant arm, were evaluated. Participants completed an electronically-administered questionnaire and were assessed clinically. Chi-square tests, Fisher's exact test and Poisson regression models were used where appropriate, to investigate the association between hip scores, ethnicity, nationality, gender, handedness and age.~Methods~Methods~There was a statistically significant association between the OHS and age (p<0.0001) and the HHS and age (p = 0.0006); demonstrating that as age increased, normal hip scores decreased. There was no statistically significant association between the HHS and gender (p = 0.1389); or HSS and nationality, adjusting for age (p = 0.5698) and adjusting for gender (p = 0.6997). There was no statistically significant association between the OHS and gender (p = 0.1350). Australians reported a statistically significant 4.2% higher overall OHS value compared to Canadians (p = 0.0490). There was no statistically significant association between the OHS and nationality in age groups 18-79 years. Participants >80 years reported a statistically significant association between the OHS and nationality (p<0.0001).~Results~Results~Studies using an electronic control group should consider differences in gender, age, ethnicity and nationality when using the HHS and OHS to assess patient outcomes. Background: Health care on equal terms is a cornerstone of the Swedish health care system. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is considered a success story in Sweden with low frequency of reoperations and restored health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Administratively, health care in Sweden is locally self-governed by 21 counties. In this longitudinal nation-wide observational study we assessed the possible geographical variations in 1-year follow-up patient-reported outcomes (PROs): EQ-5D index, EQ VAS, Pain VAS and Satisfaction VAS.Methods: Study population consisted of 36,235 Swedish THA patients, operated during 2008 to 2012 due to hip osteoarthritis. Individual data came from Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register, Statistics Sweden and National Board of Health and Welfare. We used descriptive statistics together with multivariable regression analysis to analyse the data.Results: We observed county level differences in both preoperative and postoperative PROs. The results showed that the differences observed in preoperative PROs could not fully explain the differences observed in postoperative PROs, even after adjustment for patient demographics (age, sex, BMI, Elixhauser comorbidity index, marital status, educational level and disposable income). This indicates that other factors might influence the outcome after THA.Conclusion: Likely, structural and process differences such as indication for surgery have an influence on PROs after surgery. Standardization of care at hospital levels may decrease geographical variations in postoperative HRQoL. Remaining differences will then possibly be associated to patient demographics.
