The tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng was unearthed in 1978 at Leiguudun in Suizhou City, Hubei Province, China. This is the largest wooden coffin in rock pit and vertical cave in the Warring States period in China. The large wooden coffin components provide reliable material data for the study of the feudal burial system in the pre-Qin period and have high value. In this paper, the wooden coffin excavated from the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng was studied. By understanding the composition of wood, studying the weight gain rate, shrinkage rate, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and compression resistance, the wood reinforced by rosin and epoxy resin was compared, and the reinforcement effect and principle of the two reinforcement methods were discussed. The study found that the wood properties of rosin reinforced group were better than those of epoxy reinforced group in the aspects of compressive strength, weight gain rate and volume shrinkage rate, and the mechanical properties of wood were significantly improved. In addition, methanol or ethanol can be used to dissolve the rosin shellac in this strengthening process, which can achieve reversible strengthening treatment. The results provide valuable examples and research ideas for the selection of different conservation techniques of large wooden cultural relics unearthed in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River during the Warring States Period. The manufactured capital, usually denoted as material stocks from an industrial ecology perspective, has thus far received wide attention in sustainability and circularity science. Sustainable resource management should be rooted in detailed knowledge of manufactured capital accumulation in society at a high spatial resolution. Previous studies demonstrated that night‐time light (NTL) data provide a great opportunity for monitoring material stocks dynamics at a higher spatial resolution on the regional and global scale. However, the potential of historical–geographical refined material stocks has not been fully analyzed and explored because of the inconsistency of NTL images detected by the different satellites. In this study, based on a new set of material stocks data in China and harmonized NTL images (1992–2018), we map the national stocks of 13 bulk materials (including cement, gravel, wood, brick, sand, asphalt, glass, lime, plastic, rubber, copper, aluminum, and steel) at a 1 × 1 km resolution from 1992 to 2018. The results find that the total material stocks increased from 190,000 to 460,000 t/km2 between 1992 and 2018. Among the five end‐use sectors, buildings have the highest density of 430,000 t/km2, while domestic appliances have the lowest density of 140 t/km2. Four manufactured capital clusters, including the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei, and Chengdu–Chongqing agglomerations, possess 38% of the national total stocks in 2018, revealing an unbalanced distributed pattern of manufactured capital across China. The rotting wood in freshwater is a unique eco-environment favoring various fungi. During our investigation of freshwater fungi on decaying wood, three hyphomycetes were collected from Jiangxi and Guangxi Provinces, China. Based on the morphological observations and phylogenetic analysis of a combined DNA data containing ITS, LSU, SSU and tef1-α sequences, two new Trichobotrys species, T. meilingensis and T. yunjushanensis, as well as a new record of T. effusa, were introduced. Cost-effective, non-destructive means of estimating wood properties of eucalypts grown in Guangxi, China, were evaluated using near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and resistance drilling. For this evaluation, wood samples for NIR analysis and resistance drill measurements were collected from 581 trees, representing eight plantation Eucalyptus taxa across five sites. The near infra-red (NIR) spectra collected from the 581 wood samples were analysed using existing calibrations for kraft pulp yield, cellulose content, hot water extractives and Klason lignin. These spectra and calibrations were effective in predicting over 60% of the variance in total carbohydrates and over 80% of the extractives and lignin values from independent laboratory analysis of a subset of 100 samples. Resistance drilling combined with software developed for processing the drill data proved to be a quick, low cost and effective means of quantifying wood density (as amplitude of the drill torque), stem diameter and bark thickness. Biomass burning serves as important sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), yet our understanding of the molecular characteristics of oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) from fresh emissions remains limited. In this study, gaseous organic compounds in fresh smokes from burning typical Chinese crop straws and woods are measured using an iodide time‐of‐flight chemical ionization mass spectrometer. Approximately 750 molecular formulas are identified, with CHO compounds containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms accounting for 77%–95% of the total. C1–C3 organic acids and dicarboxylic acids dominate the total CHO signal intensities by 27%–48%, while well‐known molecular markers of biomass burning, such as monosaccharide, guaiacol and syringol derivatives, contribute 7%–17%. Notably, crop straw and wood burning emit a higher abundance of guaiacol than syringol derivatives by a factor of 5. Additionally, a variety of nitrogen‐containing compounds (mainly in the CHON group) is identified, including isocyanate, amide, amino acids, and pyridine. The mass spectral profiles of organic compounds are largely similar between crop straw and wood burning fuels, although wood burning produces higher contributions of compounds with carbon atoms numbers >10. The saturation concentrations of organic compounds are estimated using molecular formula‐based volatility parameterization, revealing that semi‐volatile and intermediate VOCs (S/intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOCs)) predominate smoke releases by 35%–60% and 20%–43%, respectively, with only a small fraction of low‐volatility compounds. Given the widespread nature of biomass burning in winter China, our results may have significant implications for interpreting secondary organic aerosol formation through gas‐particle partitioning or aqueous‐phase reactions. Wood-rotting fungi are organisms that can decompose wood substrates and extract nutrients from them to support their growth. They play a crucial role in the material cycle of forest ecosystems. The genus Pluteus plays a significant role in wood decomposition. In this study, the morphology and molecular systematics of the sect. Celluloderma of the genus Pluteus were carried out. Pluteus brunneodiscus was identified as a new species, along with the discovery of two new records, P. cystidiosus and P. chrysophlebius, and a common species, P. romellii. Pluteus brunneodiscus is characterized by the brown center of the pileus that transitions to white towards the margins, with the surface cracking to form irregular granules. It is typically found in Populus forests growing on decomposing twigs or wood chips. Line drawings, color photographs, and phylogenetic analyses of related species within the genus Pluteus accompany the descriptions of these four species. The analyses are based on ITS + TEF1-α sequence data. Finally, a key for the twenty species within the sect. Celluloderma of the genus Pluteus, which has been documented in China, is provided. Schima superba (Theaceae) is widely distributed in subtropical China, and is the main timber and ecological afforestation tree species. This study aimed to provide a practical basis for the genetic improvement of wood traits of Schima superba. Herein, 10-year-old, half-sib families S. superba trees were used to reveal the genetic variation and control of growth traits and wood traits, as well as the correlation between them. The results revealed significant differences in tree height, DBH, and wood basic density among families. Furthermore, the differences in wood anatomical traits between families increased with age. The order of phenotype and genetic variation among families from large to small was DBH, tree height, vessel, fiber, and wood basic density. The phenotype variation and genetic variation of wood anatomical traits also increased with age. Heritability estimates revealed that wood basic density, DBH, and tree height were under stronger genetic control; fiber and vessel were under moderate genetic control. The correlation results showed that tree height, DBH, and wood basic density could be selected independently. Wood basic density and wood anatomical traits together could be improved. Moreover, based on the selection traits of DBH and WBD, families with excellent growth and wood traits were selected using breeding values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Paulownia wood, a fast-growing wood native to China, has limited application due to its loose texture. However, the mechanical properties of materials can be improved by densification after delignification. In this study, paulownia wood was treated with sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide to remove most of the lignin, then densified by hot pressing with water or epoxy. The influence of the densification process of paulownia wood/epoxy composite on the mechanical properties, especially stab resistance, was discussed. The results show that densification after delignification significantly improves the mechanical properties of the materials. The densification improves the fracture strength (in the direction where fibers are arranged) and elasticity modulus of the materials, reaching 171.98 ± 11.22 MPa and 14.55 ± 0.68 GPa, respectively. Hybrid composites made of densified wood/carbon fiber/epoxy resin have good stab resistance. The punch strength per unit area density and puncture worker unit area density of these hybrid composites are superior to carbon fiber reinforced composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata [Lamb.] Hook.) is a widely planted species of plantation forest in China, and heat treatment can improve its dimensional stability defects and improve its performance. The wood samples were heat-treated at various temperatures (160, 180, 200, and 220 °C) for 2 h. To clarify the effect of heat treatment on wood hygroscopicity, the equilibrium moisture content (EMC) was measured, the moisture adsorption and desorption rates were determined, the hygroscopic hysteresis was examined, and the Guggenheim, Anderson, and de Boer (GAB) model was fitted to the experimental data. The moisture absorption isotherms of all samples belonged to the Type II adsorption isotherm, but the shape of the desorption isotherm was more linear for heat-treated wood samples, especially when the heat treatment temperature was higher. According to the results analyzed with ANOVA, there were significant differences in equilibrium moisture content between the control samples and the heat-treated samples under the conditions of 30%, 60%, and 95% relative humidity (RH, p < 0.05), and the results of multiple comparisons were similar. The decrease in hygroscopicity was more pronounced in wood treated at higher temperatures. The EMC of the 160–220 °C heat-treated samples of the control samples was 14.00%, 22.37%, 28.95%, and 39.63% lower than that of the control sample at 95% RH. Under low RH conditions (30%), water is taken up mainly via monolayer sorption, and multilayer sorption gradually predominates over monolayer sorption with the increase in RH. The dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) analysis indicated that the heat-treated wood revealed an increase in isotherm hysteresis, which was due to the change in cell wall chemical components and microstructure caused by heat treatment. In addition, the effective specific surface area of wood samples decreased significantly after heat treatment, and the change trend was similar to that of equilibrium moisture content. Introduction: Hybrid poplars are industrial trees in China. An understanding of the molecular mechanism underlying wood formation in hybrid poplars is necessary for molecular breeding. Although the division and differentiation of vascular cambial cells is important for secondary growth and wood formation, the regulation of this process is largely unclear. Methods: In this study, mPagGRF15 OE and PagGRF15-SRDX transgenic poplars were generated to investigate the function of PagGRF15. RNA-seq and qRT-PCR were conducted to analyze genome-wide gene expression, while ChIP-seq and ChIP-PCR were used to identified the downstream genes regulated by PagGRF15. Results and discussion: We report that PagGRF15 from hybrid poplar (Populus alba × P. glandulosa), a growth-regulating factor, plays a critical role in the regulation of vascular cambium activity. PagGRF15 was expressed predominantly in the cambial zone of vascular tissue. Overexpression of mPagGRF15 (the mutated version of GRF15 in the miR396 target sequence) in Populus led to decreased plant height and internode number. Further stem cross sections showed that the mPagGRF15 OE plants exhibited significant changes in vascular pattern with an increase in xylem and a reduction in phloem. In addition, cambium cell files were decreased in the mPagGRF15 OE plants. However, dominant suppression of the downstream genes of PagGRF15 using PagGRF15-SRDX showed an opposite phenotype. Based on the RNA-seq and ChIP-seq results, combining qRT-PCR and ChIP-PCR analysis, candidate genes, such as WOX4b, PXY and GID1.3, were obtained and found to be mainly involved in cambial activity and xylem differentiation. Accordingly, we speculated that PagGRF15 functions as a positive regulator mediating xylem differentiation by repressing the expression of the WOX4a and PXY genes to set the pace of cambial activity. In contrast, PagGRF15 mediated the GA signaling pathway by upregulating GID1.3 expression to stimulate xylem differentiation. This study provides valuable information for further studies on vascular cambium differentiation mechanisms and genetic improvement of the specific gravity of wood in hybrid poplars. The Permian-Triassic transition saw extreme climatic changes that severely impacted the terrestrial ecosystem. Fossil plants, particularly fossil woods, are sensitive to climatic changes, and they, therefore, are unique materials revealing extreme environmental and climatic changes on land at that time. Abundant conifer woods were discovered in the Lopingian (Late Permian) strata of the Sunjiagou Formation in Shanxi Province, North China. The newly finding permineralized woods record the unique landscape of Lopingian North China. They represent a new conifer genus and species: Shanxiopitys zhangziensis gen. et sp. nov. Analyses of growth pattern and anatomical characteristics of the fossil woods indicate these trees grew under optimal growing conditions, and without seasonal growth cessation. However, climate signals from leaf fossils, vertebrate fossils and sedimentary evidences indicate a strongly seasonal climate in North China during the Lopingian. Thus, it is speculated that these trees likely lived in the gallery forests, which were distributed along the paleo-rivers within a seasonal landscape in the central North China block during the Lopingian. Although the thermal dissipation probe (TDP) method is prominent in forest transpiration studies, the accurate estimation of sap flow density in particular trees with different wood structures remains highly variable. To verify the applicability of the TDP method in the measurement of the transpirational water consumption of shrub communities in degraded karst areas in southern China, Granier's original formula was validated and corrected using the isolated stem segment method with Celtis sinensis, Xylosma congesta, Triadica sebifera, Paliurus ramosissimus, Pyracantha fortuneana, Sageretia thea, and Phanera championii. Finally, the correction coefficients were analyzed in relation to wood structural parameters. Our study reveals that the sap flow density estimated using Granier's original formula exhibited varying degrees of overestimation or underestimation compared to the measured sap flow density. The differences ranged from −78.9% to 114.2%, highlighting the need for formula correction. Consequently, we adjusted the coefficients α and β of the original formula (n = 3–5), resulting in a revised range of 0.0047–0.0509 g cm−2 s−1 and 0.5882–1.9821 (R2 = 0.81–0.97), respectively. The conduit diameter was significantly correlated with the correction coefficient α. It is currently unknown whether the results obtained for a particular species can be applied to different growth environments and more prominent individuals of the same species. Freshwater fungi are highly diverse in China and frequently reported from submerged wood, freshwater insects, herbaceous substrates, sediments, leaves, foams, and living plants. In this study, we investigated two freshwater species that were collected from Yunnan and Guizhou provinces in China. Detailed morphological analysis complemented by multi-gene phylogenetic analyses based on LSU, SSU, ITS, RPB2 and TEF1-a sequences data revealed them to be two new saprobic species, namely Acrogenospora alangii sp. nov. and Conioscypha yunnanensis sp. nov. in their asexual morphs. Additionally, Acrogenospora alangii sp. nov. is reported for the first time as a freshwater ascomycete associated with the medicinal plant Alangium chinense (Alangiaceae). Traditional wood–polymer composite (WPC) based on the in situ polymerization of ethylene unsaturated monomers in the cellular cavity of wood is significant for the high-value-added utilization of low-quality wood. However, this type of WPC has the problems of volatile monomers, low conversion rates, odor residue, and poor compatibility between the polymer and wood interface, which hinder its promotion and application. In this study, a two-step process of cell wall bulking in combination with cell lumen filling was prepared to modify wood using Maleic anhydride (MAN) as the bulking agent and GMA-EGDMA (molar ratio 2:1) as the active monomer system. The results indicate that the modulus of rupture (MOR) (125.19 ± 8.41 MPa), compressive strength (116.38 ± 7.69 MPa), impact toughness (55.4 ± 2.95 KJ m−2), and hardness (6187 ± 273 N) of the bulking–filling wood composite materials were improved by 54%, 56%, 36%, and 66%, respectively, compared with those of poplar wood. These properties were superior to those of the traditional styrene (PSt)-WPC and even exceeded the performance of Xylosma congesta (Lour.) Merr, a high-quality wood from northeast China. Meanwhile, the mass loss of wood composite materials with bulking–filling treatment was only 2.35 ± 0.05%, and the internal structure remained intact, presenting excellent decay resistance. Additionally, the treatment also significantly improved the thermal and dimensional stability of the wood composites. This study provides a theoretical basis and guidance for realizing the high-value-added application of low-quality wood and the preparation of highly durable wood-based composites. The subtropical region of China possesses abundant broad-leaf tree species resources; however, the anatomical properties and microstructure of the wood are still unclear, which restricts the processing and utilization of wood. In this study, 14 broad-leaf trees and four coniferous trees were selected. Wood anatomical indices and wood microanatomy were used to evaluate the wood properties using a comprehensive index method. The results have shown that Dalbergia assamica exhibited the highest wood basic density among the 14 broad-leaved tree species, accompanied by a significant fiber proportion and vessel lumen diameter but a small vessel proportion and a high number of wood rays. Conversely, Parakmeria lotungensis and Michelia chapensis had relatively low wood basic densities, rendering them less suitable as valuable broad-leaved wood sources. Altingia chinensis, Castanopsis kawakamii, and the remaining 11 tree species exhibited medium-level wood basic densities. The 14 broad-leaved tree species had medium-length fibers. Phoebe bournei, Dalbergia assamica, and Castanopsis kawakamii demonstrated relatively high fiber proportion. Altingia chinensis, Dalbergia assamica, and Castanopsis kawakamii exhibited a large number of wood rays, making their wood more susceptible to cracking, whereas other broad-leaved tree species possessed fewer wood rays. Objectives: Erythrophleum is a genus in the Fabaceae family. The genus contains only about 10 species, and it is best known for its hardwood and medical properties worldwide. Erythrophleum fordii Oliv. is the only species of this genus distributed in China. It has superior wood and can be used in folk medicine, which leads to its overexploitation in the wild. For its effective conservation and elucidation of the distinctive genetic traits of wood formation and medical components, we present its first genome assembly. Data description: This work generated ~ 160.8 Gb raw Nanopore whole genome sequencing (WGS) long reads, ~ 126.0 Gb raw MGI WGS short reads and ~ 29.0 Gb raw RNA-seq reads using E. fordii leaf tissues. The de novo assembly contained 864,825,911 bp in the E. fordii genome, with 59 contigs and a contig N50 of 30,830,834 bp. Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs (BUSCO) revealed 98.7% completeness of the assembly. The assembly contained 471,006,885 bp (54.4%) repetitive sequences and 28,761 genes that coded for 33,803 proteins. Harvested wood/bamboo products (HWP/HBP) constitute a large global carbon stock. However, the contribution of HBP to carbon stocks has been neglected in mixed wood and bamboo data, especially in China. Therefore, the production approach and the first-order decay method were used to estimate the spatiotemporal carbon stock change in HWP/HBP based on provincial production data from the China Forestry Statistical Yearbooks for 1987–2020. The results showed that China's total carbon stocks of HWP and HBP were 328.7 teragram carbon (TgC) and 129.7 TgC between 1987 and 2020. Of this, the HWP carbon stock was mainly sourced from three provinces across the north and south: Guangxi (60.8 TgC), Heilongjiang (37.2 TgC), and Fujian (24.2 TgC), and HBP carbon stock was mainly sourced from three southern provinces: Fujian (33.4 TgC), Guangxi (20.3 TgC), and Zhejiang (13.7 TgC). The proportion of the HBP carbon stock in the total carbon stock increased from 20% in 2010 to 28% in 2020, indicating that bamboo products play an important role in the accumulation of carbon stocks in China. The differences in contributions to spatiotemporal trends between the provinces provide more specific information to make precise decisions about forest management and carbon sequestration. Gleditsia sinensis is a species endemic to China, an ecologically economic multipurpose tree with great development potential, which could be used as medicine, food, industrial materials and wood. It is well known that the standardized description of plant development stages according to their phenological characteristics not only is crucial for conduct of various agronomic practices, but also facilitates the exchange of new findings based on the same understanding of the plant. However, a uniform phenology scale of G. sinensis has rarely been reported, despite its expanding plant area and rapid development of this industry over the past few years. Thus, phenological events of G. sinensis were monitored based on the BBCH scale during two consecutive years in this study. Eight of the 10 BBCH stages described in detail by combining numbers and letters based on its species characteristic were accurately recorded, including bud development (0), leaf development (1), shoot development (3), inflorescence emergence (5), flowering (6), pod development (7), maturity of pod (8) and senescence (9). As far as we know, it is the first time that a special phenological rhythm for G. sinensis has been developed using an extended BBCH scale, which not only provides the basis for other basic research, but also assists growers in conducting planting management practices. Bamboo is a highly renewable biomass resource with outstanding ecological, economic and social benefits. However, its lengthy vegetative growth stage and uncertain flowering period have hindered the application of traditional breeding methods. In recent years, significant progress has been made in bamboo breeding. While technical advances in bamboo breeding have been impressive, it is essential to also consider the broader implications we can learn from bamboo's extraordinary features for sustainable development. This review provides an overview of the current status of bamboo breeding technology, including a detailed history of bamboo breeding divided into four eras, a comprehensive map of bamboo germplasm gardens worldwide, with a focus on China, and a summary of available transgenic technologies for gene function verification and genetic improvement. As the demand for bamboo as a sustainable and renewable resource increases continuously, breeding objectives should be focused on enhancing yield, wood properties and adaptability to diverse environmental conditions. In particular, priority should be given to improving fiber length, internode length and wall thickness, as well as regulating lignin and cellulose content for papermaking, substitute for plastic and other applications. Furthermore, we highlight the challenges and opportunities for future research and development in bamboo breeding, including the application of omics technologies, artificial intelligence and the development of new breeding methods. Finally, by integrating the technical advances in bamboo breeding with a discussion of its broader implications for sustainable development, this review provides a comprehensive framework for the development of bamboo industry. This study aims to systematically examine the developmental attributes and trends within China's forestry sector through the lens of a global value chain (GVC) framework. To this end, this research analyzes the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development Inter-Country Input–Output (OECD-ICIO) database, using a cohesive set of GVC methods, including the forward decomposition of industry value-added, an assessment of industry upstream and downstream positions, the decomposition of export values, and analysis of trade competitiveness indicators. The trajectory of China's forestry industry hinges upon the interplay between foreign demand and domestic demand. The results reveal a transition in China's forestry sector development model from export-focused to a domestically driven approach. The proportion of value-added that is devoted to meeting domestic demands within the wood processing and papermaking industries has surged to 76% and 82%, respectively. Ginkgo biloba is one of the most widely cultivated dioecious timber trees in China. Understanding sex-related differences and how they affect growth traits and wood properties is crucial for informed management and optimal utilization of ginkgoes. In the present study, we collected 42 ginkgo samples and conducted DNA molecular identification to determine their sex. The result was a 1:1 ratio of male to female specimens. In addition, we measured 16 growth-trait and wood-property indices for these samples using advanced equipment, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the Hitman ST300 standing tree tool. For growth traits, significant differences were observed between male and female ginkgoes in terms of the diameter at breast height (DBH), clear bole height (CBH), height, and volume. Significant differences were identified in wood properties between male and female ginkgoes in terms of the degree of cellulose crystallinity (DCC), cell length, cell wall thickness, and wall-to-lumen ratio. Tracheids from female trees were found to be wider, with thicker cell walls, than those from male trees. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that there was a slight separation between the sexes in terms of all growth traits, whereas there was no separation in wood properties. The membership function value (MFV) also showed that male ginkgo exhibited a more robust phenotype than female ginkgo. Recombinant wood, as a green application technology of wood materials with "small timber for large use and inferior timber for superior use", is one of the processing and utilization ways of fast-growing plantation timber with great development prospects in the future, which can effectively alleviate the contradiction between supply and demand of wood in China. Focusing on the high-performance preparation of recombinant wood, in this paper, the effects of different processing conditions on its properties were focused on, the problems it faces in the process of industrialization were summarized, and corresponding solutions were put forward. Among them, the new concepts of "directional control of the color of reconstituted wood" and "high-performance wood reinforced glass" were conceived based on the performance characteristics of reconstituted wood, focusing on the shortage of high value and functionality of the application of reconstituted wood products. To investigate the potential value of tree ring blue intensity as a robust climate proxy in central and western China, four species from five sites were assessed. As well as latewood inverted blue intensity, we also examined earlywood blue intensity. To explore the sensitivity of using different extraction parameter settings using the software CooRecorder, seven percentile (P) variant settings for earlywood blue intensity and latewood inverted blue intensity were used, namely P 50 : 50, P 60 : 40, P 70 : 30, P 80 : 20, P 85 : 15, P 90 : 10, and P 95 : 5. Age-dependent spline was used for all, and the positive trends were not retained. Correlation analysis was applied between the tree ring parameter chronologies and monthly/seasonal mean temperature, precipitation, and self-calibrated Palmer drought severity index variables. Linear regression was also used to further highlight the potential of developing climate reconstructions using these species. Only subtle differences were found between the different percentile extraction variants. As has been shown for many other Northern Hemisphere studies, latewood inverted blue intensity expresses a strong positive relationship with growing-season temperatures (the two southern sites explain almost 56 % of the temperature variance when combined). However, the low latitude of these sites shows an exciting potential for regions south of 30 ∘ N that are traditionally not targeted for temperature reconstructions. In the present study, we analyzed seven wooden bows and 13 arrows excavated from the cemeteries of Subeixi Culture (13th century BCE–AD second century) in the Turpan Basin, northwest China. A total of six taxa, viz. Morus sp., Salix sp., Picea sp., Lonicera sp., Betula sp., and Tamarix sp. were identified. Some of these taxa have been generally accepted to be suitable for bow‐and‐arrow production. All these taxa were local in origin but distributed in different ecotonal zones, including oases, saline‐alkali lands, and mountain areas. Previous archaeological studies have confirmed that the Subeixi populations lived an agro‐pastoral life. By analyzing the possible provenance of these wood samples, it can be hypothesized that these ancient agro‐pastoralists moved between the Turpan Basin and the Tianshan Mountains on a seasonal basis. Today, China has become the world's third largest international trading country and the largest container manufacturer. However, with the demand of industrial production, resulting in the decrease of tropical rain forest year by year, clonal wood (apitong) has become a rare tree species, and the raw materials used in the production of container wood flooring have gradually developed from imported clonal wood to multi-timber. In this case, it is very important to find new materials to replace imported clone wood and study the mechanism of damage (destruction) of container wood flooring subjected to external strength. Based on the mechanical analysis and comparison of 7 260 kg container wood floor test in trolley and conventional laboratory load test, the causes and cracking position of container wood floor opening were studied, and the form and mechanism of container wood floor under the action of external strength were clarified. The Nantong Ancient Ship refers to an ancient Chinese wooden ship of the late Ming Dynasty excavated in Nantong city in December 2022. This paper identifies the wood and discusses its related analysis. Wood samples extracted from the Nantong Ancient Ship were studied from the viewpoints of anatomy, physics, and chemistry. Microscopic identification results concluded that willow and Chinese fir were the main wood species used to make this ship. The content of holocellulose in the ancient wood was only 37.9 to 38.9%, while the content of lignin was 55.2 to 56.4%. The cellulose crystallinity of ancient wood was 39 to 42% lower than that of healthy recent wood. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra revealed that the deterioration of ancient wood caused cellulose and hemicellulose degradation, but no apparent lignin alteration. The results could provide a basis for drawing up a conservation plan for the Nantong Ancient Ship. Three helicosporous hyphomycete collections representing two species were obtained from rotting wood found in freshwater and terrestrial habitats in the Guizhou and Guangxi Provinces, China. A new genus Pseudotubeufia (Tubeufiaceae, Tubeufiales), comprising Ps. hyalospora sp. nov. and Ps. laxispora sp. nov., was introduced with morphological characteristic and molecular data. In addition, the molecular evidence showed that Helicomyces sp. (G.M. 2020-09-19.1), H. roseus (CBS: 102.76), and the new genus Pseudotubeufia clustered together with high support based on a multi-gene (LSU, ITS, tef1α, and rpb2) phylogenetic analysis. • Copper cations of bronze corrosion products were concentrated into the middle lamella (ML) of cell walls, and intensively fixed on the surface of cell lumen. • Cellulose was well-preserved in archaeological wood contaminated by copper corrosion, but lignin was severely degraded. • Iron underwent an intense Fenton reaction and produced hydroxyl radicals, resulting in wood polymer degradation accelerating. The deterioration mechanism of wooden archaeological artifacts inside the bronze of excavated chariots is not understood because it is unknown how bronze corrosion products affect the degradation of archaeological wood. In this paper, several microtopography and chemical analysis methods were used to characterize changes in the hierarchical structures and analyze the deterioration mechanisms of archaeological wood inside the bronze parts of chariots. The results indicated that some important components of chariots in ancient China mainly were made of Ulmus spp. and Pteroceltis tatarinowii woods due to their higher strength and good wear resistance in ancient traditional timber tree species. Furthermore, cellulose was well-preserved in archaeological wood contaminated by copper corrosion, especially crystalline cellulose, but lignin and hemicelluloses were severely degraded. The crystallite thickness and crystallinity of cellulose were also higher than those of more recent wood, but the arrangement of cellulose was disoriented. Copper cations of bronze corrosion products were concentrated into the middle lamella (ML) of cell walls and fixed on the inner surface of cell lumen. The micro-distributions of copper and lignin were correlated. However, iron components embedded in bronze underwent an intense Fenton reaction and produced hydroxyl radicals that penetrated the wood and accelerated wood polymer degradation. With an understanding of this deterioration mechanism, it is possible to determine possible conservation and preservation methods, including the development of copper preservatives and the desalination of iron compounds. This study aimed to investigate the effects of growth ring width, height from the tree base, and loading direction on the transverse compressive strength of Japanese larch wood, which is commonly used in wood structures in China. Plantation wood is often used to replace natural forest woods for reconstruction purposes, despite significant differences in properties (e.g., growth rings, density, strength) between them. The ends of transversely compressed wood members in such structures are prone to damage by breaking or crushing. A transverse compressive test was conducted following Chinese national standards, which revealed the following key findings. (1) There was a significant difference in the transverse compressive strength of wood with different growth ring widths (p < 0.05). The radial and slant compressive strength of wood increases with growth ring width, while the tangential compressive strength decreases as growth ring width increases. (2) The transverse compressive strength of wood decreases as the height from the tree base increases. The radial, tangential, and slant compressive strength at a lower height were 18.39%, 22.58%, and 18% higher than those at a greater height in the stem, respectively, with significant differences at the 0.05 level. (3) The load–displacement curve of Japanese larch wood under radial and slant compression follows a "three-segment" form. In contrast, the load–displacement curve of tangential compression is a continuous curve that drops sharply upon reaching its highest point. (4) There is a significant difference in the transverse compressive strength of Japanese larch wood in different loading directions when growth ring width and height from the tree base are constant (p < 0.05), which fall into order as tangential > radial > slant. Climate warming may induce growth decline in warm-temperate areas subjected to seasonal soil moisture deficit, whereas increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration (Ca) is expected to enhance tree growth. An accurate understanding of tree growth and physiological processes responding to climate warming and increasing Ca is critical. Here, we analyzed tree-ring stable carbon isotope and wood anatomical traits of Pinus tabuliformis from Qinling Mountains in China to understand how lumen diameter (LD) determining potential hydraulic conductivity and cell-wall thickness (CWT) determining carbon storage responded to climate and Ca. The effects of climate and Ca on intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) were isolated, and iWUE values due to only-climate (iWUEClim) and only-CO2 effects (iWUECO2) were obtained. During a low-iWUE period, the influences of climate on earlywood (EW) LD and latewood (LW) CWT prevailed. During a high-iWUE period, CO2 fertilization promoted cell enlargement and carbon storage but this was counteracted by a negative influence of climate warming. The limiting direct effects of iWUEClim and indirect effects of climate on EW LD were greater than on LW CWT. P. tabuliformis in temperate forests will face a decline of growth and carbon fixation, but will produce embolism-resistant tracheids with narrow lumen responding to future hotter droughts. It is essential to analyze the spatial autocorrelation and heterogeneity of aboveground biomass (AGB). But it is difficult to accurately describe due to the lack of data in clear-cutting plots. Thus, measuring the AGB directly in a clear-cutting plot can provide a reference for accurately describing the spatial variation. Therefore, a 0.3-hectare clear-cutting sample plot of Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis natural forest was selected, and the AGB was calculated by each component. The intra-group variance was quantitatively described in terms of spatial heterogeneity, and the spatial autocorrelation was explored by global and local Moran's I. The results indicated that (1) there was different spatial heterogeneity for the different trees and organs. The intra-group variance tended to be stable after 20 m for P. kesiya var. langbianensis (PK) and other upper trees (UPs) and after 10 m for the other lower trees (LTs). (2) The spatial autocorrelation of AGB and wood biomass was similar, while the bark biomass and foliage biomass were consistent. PK and other UPs also exhibited strong spatial autocorrelation, with maximum Moran's I values of 0.1537 and 0.1644, respectively. The vascular cambium is an extensive and permanent secondary meristem with wood cells products of periclinal divisions commonly contributed to two directions and arranged in radial files of trees. Cambium activity is the origin of timber production. Taxodium ascendens Brongn is an exotic species in China, and its apical meristem and cambial activity are still elusive, resulting in a lack of understanding about its wood formation and improvement. We thus addressed this knowledge gap by studying Cambium activity. For studying, twigs from five 30-year-old healthy trees were collected between February-2017 and March-2018. Anatomy deciphered its apical meristem with a Cryptomeria–Abies type. The procambium appeared after leaf primordium and initially presented five lobes as observed transversely from a one-year-old shoot. The procambium under the apical differentiated into protophloem first and then protoxylem toward the inside. It means that protoxylem differentiated later than protophloem did. After dormancy, the vascular cambium began to be active, starting in early April 2017, which was later than shoot differentiation. On 25 July 2017, the cambial zone had 9–10 immature xylem cell layers. Both initiation and cessation of the xylem preceded that of the phloem. Until 10 October 2017, few immature elements were found, indicating the translation of cells from activity to dormancy. On 15 November 2017, the cambium contained 3–4 cells in radial rows, which demonstrated the dormancy of the cambium until next spring. Furthermore, immature xylem elements increased as cell layers in the cambium zone and cell fission increased. The growth pattern of T. ascendens revealed that cambial activity is highly seasonal and dependent on changes in abiotic conditions. Thus, the wood formation in the species will be significantly altered in a changing climatic pattern. Background and aims: Decomposition of leaf and root litter contributes large amounts of phosphorus (P) to soil and is strongly determined by litter quality, morphology, and microbial activity, but the individual and interactive roles of these factors remain underexplored. Methods: To fill this gap, field litter decomposition experiment was conducted by collecting leaf and fine root litters (< 2 mm) of crop (from cropland), shrub (from shrubland) and wood (from woodland) and placing the litters into woodland soil for 2 years in subtropical China, in order to evaluate effects of the above factors on leaf and fine root litter P loss of three species among different decomposition stages. Results: Leaf litter P loss was positively correlated with root P loss, and both were primarily controlled by microbes. Leaf litter P loss was more affected by litter quality, while root litter P loss was more affected by morphology during whole decomposition. However, morphology and litter quality were also important controls of leaf P loss at mid-to-late stages and of root P loss at early-to-mid stages. Conclusion: Our results highlighted that microbes exerted dominant controls with different importance of litter morphology and litter quality during different decomposition, which weakened the coordination between leaf and root decomposition. Overall, different regulation processes of leaf and root litter P loss and associated drivers at different decomposition stages provided novel insight into accurately predicting litter decomposition related to nutrient cycling under future afforestation. Rubber (Hevea brasiliensis Müll. Arg.) is a major economic crop grown in tropical areas. However, the various service functions of rubber plantations and their benefit to society, the economy and the environment are still unclear. Data on rubber planting areas, dry rubber and wood yields, carbon sequestration and oxygen release capacities, biodiversity, employment, and market prices for natural rubber and rubber wood were collected. Observations of land use patterns and functions were carried out. The results showed that the capacity of average annual carbon stock capacity of rubber plantations in China was 36.51 million tonnes. The accumulation values of carbon sequestration and oxygen release, 416.89 million tonnes and 304.42 million tonnes, respectively. A total of 849 plant species, 60 bird species, 5 species of ground beetle, 25 species of wild bees, 27 ant species, 10 termite species, 87 spider species and 38 hemipterous species were found in rubber plantations. The average annual dry rubber and rubber wood yields were 676,300 tonnes and 1.29 million m3. From 2000 to 2020, 14.20 million tonnes of dry rubber were produced and 27.02 million m3 of wood were harvested. The average annual output of dry rubber and rubber wood was US$1.86 billion, while total output value summed to US$ 39.08 billion from 2000 to 2020. Rubber cultivation and plantation operation activities employed an average of 1.11 million people annually. Land use management and natural disasters may affect the service functions of rubber plantations, which are carbon sequestration and oxygen release, maintaining biodiversity, providing dry rubber and rubber wood, maintaining water and conserving water sources, absorbing employment, changing unsustainable agricultural practices and habits of smallholders and ethnic minorities, and promoting transfer of technologies. In the future, on the basis of recognising and rationally weighing the various functions of rubber plantations and their main driving factors, smallholders are expected to maximise the social, economic and ecological functions of rubber plantations through effective crop management and utilisation of resources. Summary: The study aims to provide the morphological and molecular characterisation of two newly discovered Cryptaphelenchus species, namely: C. curvatum n. sp. and C. tumidus n. sp. Morphologically both species are minute nematodes, possess medium-sized stylets with basal knobs laterally directed, and short post-uterine sacs (PUS). Cryptaphelenchus curvatum n. sp. was detected from the local Pinus branch samples and is characterised by having an equal proportion of adult males and females, medium-sized body lengths of females 353 (320-388) μ m and males 277 (256-293) μ m, lateral fields with four lateral lines, 8-10 μ m long stylet, PUS about one vulva body width long and conical posterior body end with a blunt pointed tip. Cryptaphelenchus tumidus n. sp. was detected in a packaging wood sample from Japan and is characterised by having rare male, short body lengths of females 236 (217-270) μ m and males 180 μ m, obscure lateral fields, stylet 6.8 (6.0-7.5) μ m, PUS about half vulva body width long and a slim conical posterior body end with a finely rounded tip. The phylogenetic trees were also constructed based on rRNA gene sequences (D2-D3 segments of the 28S, ITS and 18S) and discussed in detail. Since Cryptaphelenchus species offer multitrophic relationships among their insect vectors and associated microbiota, species recognition and molecular studies of recovered populations will facilitate researchers to determine whether these species might play any ecological roles in insect bionomics or the residing host tree. Tannin is a chemical compound found in plants such as tea, with yellow or brown as a characteristic color. Tannin is present in any plant species' wood, stems, barks, leaves, roots, and fruits. However, the tannin contents in those plants are not the same and plants rich in tannin are the most used raw material for industrial‐level tannin extraction, such as chestnut. The central purpose of this article was to identify the tannin content of vegetables. In this study, tannins were extracted from 72 plants in China. The contents and purities of tannins, non‐tannins and insoluble substances in those studied plants were determined. A gravimetric approach, using hider powder as a precipitate to bind tannins, has been developed to quantify total tannins in plants. The results showed that high contents of tannins (>20%) were found in Pltycarya strobilacea fruit, Quercus acutissima shell, Quercus variabilis shell, Acacia mearnsii bark, Albizia kalkora bark, Camellia oleifera wood, Rosa cymosa root, Rosa laevigata root, Rhus chinensis gallnut, Bruguiera sexangular bark, Kandelia candel bark, Ceriops tagal bark, Lumnitzera racemose bark and Dioscorea cirrhosa tuber. The purity of tannins was more than 70% in some plants: Larix gmelimi bark, Causuarina equisetifolia bark, P. strobilacea fruit, Castanopsis tibetana wood, Quercus aliena shell, Quercus chenii shell and bark, A. mearnsii bark, A. kalkora bark, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza bark, C. tagal bark, K. candel bark and D. cirrhosa tubers. Red soil is one of the most widely distributed soil types in Yunnan Province of China. Red soil is characterized by high plasticity, high void ratio, heavy viscosity, slightly acidic soil, as well as low water and fertility retention. Among them, alternate wetting and drying can be caused by rainfall, irrigation, high-temperature evaporation, and disturbances in production and construction projects, leading to the shrinkage, cracking, and swelling of red soil during drought. Soil water characteristics change dramatically, which is essential to carry out soil improvement in red soil regions. Soil reconstruction has been widely used in the practice of red soil improvement. Most research focuses mainly on the hydraulic properties of the natural red soil, rather than the reconstructed one. Furthermore, the wood fiber can be expected to serve as an ecological soil conditioner, in order to improve the ecological restoration, of the soil, and water conservation in the mining areas. However, it is still lacking on the effects of wood fiber additions on the physical properties of red soil in the combination of dry and wet alternation and wood fiber. In this study, a novel mechanism was proposed to clarify the impact of wood fiber reconstruction on the hydraulic properties of red soil during dry and wet alternation. The red soil was collected in Kunming City of Yunnan Province in China. Four types of wood fiber additions (0, 0.5%, 2.5%, and 5.0%) were used to improve the red soil. The matric suction of wood fiber composite soil was measured using filtering, and the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) was fitted using the Logistic model. The results showed that there was a gradually slow hysteresis in the dry-wet alternation on the decrease in the soil matric suction and SWCC of red soil, as the addition of wood fiber increased. Specifically, 2.5% wood fiber composite soil was the optimal ratio to improve soil water holding. The addition of wood fiber increased the intake and residual value of red soil. The residual value changed greatly under dry and wet alternations, whereas, there was a gradual decrease in the residual value, as the number of dry and wet alternations increased. The slope of 2.5% wood fiber composite soil was less affected by the dry and wet alternations, with the best capacity of water holding, while the volumetric water content decreased. The determination coefficients of soil-water characteristic curves were all above 0.97 after wood fiber addition, indicating that the Logistic model was suitable for the SWCC fitting of red soil that was modified with the wood fiber. The finding can provide a strong reference for soil reconstruction and ecological restoration during land consolidation in the red soil regions. A series of experiments were also carried out to determine the different amounts of wood fiber during dry and wet alternation. The relationship was also established between the impact of wood fiber improvement on the hydraulic properties of red soil. Since the specific impact can be depended on the physical indicators of the soil mass, further research can be expected to focus on the soil pore structure, aggregates, and permeability in the red soil. Considering the extensive application of wood materials in the construction and manufacturing, waste wood has potential of converting into new natural energy sources. In this study, cypress, pine and fir woods commonly used in China, as well as old samples for above each species (more than 200 years old) have been used to study the aging and species effects on their thermal stability and combustion models. To obtain the kinetic triplets of the pyrolysis process, all samples have been heated in a nitrogen atmosphere with heating rates of 5, 10, 15, and 20 K min−1. The kinetics parameters of pyrolysis throughout the conversion process were then calculated using isoconversional method, Coats-Redfern (CR), and masterplots methods. The reconstructed theoretical models have been then adjusted using the accommodation functions. The results of this study contribute to an increased understanding of the fire mechanism of waste woods, and implications concerning to provide scientific theoretical guidance for its feasibility as a new energy fuel more efficiently. However, whether Tingia Halle as the most diversified genus in Noeggerathiales belongs to progymnosperms has yet remained uncertain as the anatomy of the main stem of this plant is unknown, that is, whether the anatomy of the main stem with the anatomical characteristics of gymnosperms woods remains uncertain. Here, the stem anatomy of Tingia unita is presented based on fossil materials from the early Permian Wuda Tuff Flora in Wuda Coalfield, Wuhai City, Inner Mongolia, China. The well-developed secondary wood, plus previously accumulated evidence of the spore-bearing nature of this plant, confirms that this genus belongs to progymnosperms. As such, the genera Tingia and Paratingia are all certainly progymnosperms in affinity. Tingia Halle, a representative genus of the Cathaysia Flora, has been studied for nearly 100 years, being a small heterosporous tree based on the gross morphology of Tingia unita. However, the systematic affinity of Tingia is uncertain. Now, a number of well-preserved fossils of T. unita from the Taiyuan Formation of Lower Permian in Wuda Coalfield, Wuhai City, Inner Mongolia facilitates an examination of wood anatomy. The stem anatomy of T. unita shows parenchymatous pith, endarch primary xylem, pycnoxylic secondary xylem, and cortex, typically a type of gymnosperm wood, which taken together with pteridophytic reproduction, certainly evidences that Tingia Halle is a progymnosperm. Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla 'GLGU9' is one of the most commonly planted tree species in South China. It is a new variety created by Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Forestry Research Institute. As a fast-growing species, the poor dimensional stability is one of its main drawbacks, which restricts its applications. Thermal treatment is one of the effective methods to improve the dimensional stability of wood. GLGU9 wood was treated using thermal modification with palm oil. The oil was used as a heating medium and a shielding material at temperatures of 150, 170, 190, 200, and 210 °C, at various treatment durations of 1.5, 3, 4.5 and 6 h. To investigate the effect of palm oil thermal treatment on dimensional stability, the anti-shrink efficiency (ASE1) and anti-swelling efficiency (ASE2) were examined. Summary: Pseudaphelenchus is considered an intermediate between tylenchids and Aphelenchoididae because it has both a tylench-like bursa and aphelench-like pharynx. Three nematode populations within this genus representing two new species, P. guangdongensis n. sp. and P. paraguangdongensis n. sp., were discovered from pine trees in Guangdong province, China. P. guangdongensis n. sp. most closely resembles P. vindai due to the possession of three lines in their lateral fields, whereas P. paraguangdongensis n. sp. is most like P. yukiae because they share a four-lined field. Morphological and morphometric differences of these two new species and similar species are discussed. Additionally, molecular phylogenetic trees inferred from rRNA small subunit and D2-D3 expansion domains of the rRNA large subunit revealed that P. guangdongensis n. sp. and P. paraguangdongensis n. sp. are separated from all known Pseudaphelenchus species; moreover, all Pseudaphelenchus species comprise a highly supported monophyletic clade, which is basal to the family Aphelenchoididae. Two new wood-inhabiting fungi from China, Steccherinum juniperi and S. incrustans, in the family Steccherinaceae are described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular analyses. The species S. juniperi was found growing on the rotten wood of Juniperus in Qinghai Province, China, while S. incrustans was collected on rotten angiosperm wood in Yunnan Province, China. The characteristics of S. juniperi include annual, resupinate basidiomata with a buff yellow fresh pore surface that becomes apricot orange when bruised, angular pores of 3-6 per mm, subicular generative hyphae sometimes covered with crystals, the presence of encrusted skeletocystidia in tube trama only, fusiform to slim clavate cystidioles, and ellipsoid basidiospores measuring as 3-4 × 2-3µm. The characteristics of S. incrustans include annual, resupinate basidiomata with a buff yellow or pinkish buff to clay buff dried pore surface, angular pores (8-10 per mm), generative hyphae in trama frequently covered with crystals, the presence of encrusted skeletocystidia in tube trama and hymenium, and ellipsoid basidiospores (3.5-4.5 × 2.5-3.5µm). Phylogenetic analysis based on a combined 2-locus dataset [ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 (ITS) + nuclear large subunit RNA (nLSU)] shows that the two species are members of Steccherinum, and they are compared with morphologically similar and related species of this genus, respectively. In addition, two new combinations from Junghuhnia, transferred to Steccherinum as S. austrosinense and S. nandinae, are proposed based on examination of their type materials and phylogenetic analysis. Brown-rot fungi account for a small portion of the wood-decaying fungi. There are a few corticioid genera causing brown rot of wood, and their species diversity is still under investigated and studied, especially in subtropical and tropical areas. Two new brown-rot corticioid fungi, Coniophora beijingensis and Veluticeps subfasciculata were found during the investigation of corticioid fungi in China. Phylogenetic analyses of the two genera were carried out separately based on ITS-28S sequence data. Coniophora beijingensis was collected from Beijing, north China, from different kinds of angiosperm and gymnosperm trees, and is characterized by possessing a monomitic hyphal system with colorless hyphae and relatively small pale yellow basidiospores 7–8.6 μm× 4.5–6 μm. Veluticeps subfasciculata was collected from Guizhou and Sichuan Provinces, southwestern China, on Cupressus and is characterized by the resupinate to effused-reflexed basidiomes with a colliculose hymenophore, nodose-septate generative hyphae, fasciculate skeletocystidia and subcylindrical to subfusiform basidiospores 8–11 μm × 2.5–3.5 μm. Descriptions and illustrations are provided for the two new species, and identification keys to Coniophora and Veluticeps species in China are given. Industrial integration is one of the key roles in rural revitalization. The level of industrial integration can be classified to evaluate the obstacle factors in the different types of villages, particularly for the decision-making on industrial revitalization. In this study, the measure of industrial integration level was determined to diagnose the obstacle factors in the different planting types of rural areas in the hilly and mountains areas. The survey data was also collected from the 15 sample villages in six towns of Chongqing (Jiangjin) Modern Agricultural Park of China. The evaluation index was constructed from two dimensions, including the industrial integration behavior and integration benefit. The entropy weight and TOPSIS were used to couple the coordination and obstacle degree model for the integrated assessment and obstacle factor diagnosis of rural industry. The results showed that:1) The low overall level of industrial integration was found in the study area, with an average value of only 0.210. Specifically, the integration level was ranked in the descending order of the prickly ash type (0.399) > grain and oil type (0.254) > flowers and woods type villages(0.134) = vegetable type (0.134) > fruit type (0.127). There was also the striking disparity of village in the similar rural industries. The differences in the integration level of the flower-wood, vegetable, and fruit type villages were all lower than 0.110, while the prickly ash and grain-oil type villages were observed in 0.732 and 0.361, respectively, indicating the notably higher than those of the first three types of villages. The coupling and coordination degree of rural industrial integration was mostly at a low level. Fourteen sample villages were in the different degrees of imbalance, accounting for nearly 93.33%. There was the diverse in the coupling coordination degree of the six types of villages, of which the prickly ash type villages (0.436) were the highest, followed by the grain and oil type villages (0.369), and the lowest were the vegetable type villages (0.291), the flower and wood type villages (0.285), and fruit type villages (0.274). Besides, there was also a large gap in the degree of coupling and coordination between similar villages, ranking as the prickly ash type villages (0.372) > grain and oil type villages (0.201) > fruit type villages (0.157) > vegetable type villages (0.098) > flower and wood type villages (0.051). 3) The integrated development of various rural industry was caused by several factors, such as the village proximity, the proportion of new industrialization agricultural operators, the average education years of integrated operators, and the presence or absence of supporting facilities for the industrial integration at obstacle degree level greater than or equal to 0.08. But the influence degree was different. Some recommendations were proposed to improve the input of resource factors, the foundation conditions for industrial integration, and the scope and depth of agriculture. The Jingtoushan Site (8300–7800 BP), located in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, is of great value for the in-depth understanding of China's prehistoric coastal culture. At this site, numerous valuable wooden relics showing past human civilization have been discovered. Multiple approaches were taken, including wood anatomy and physicochemical analyses, to assess the preservation state of waterlogged archaeological woods (WAWs), while using high-throughput sequencing (HTS) to explore their microbial diversity and composition as well as that of the surrounding soil. The secondary walls of WAWs showed to be severely degraded, whereas the compound middle layer and cell corner were well preserved. Bacteria were the main microorganisms causing the biodegradation of WAWs, and 85.6% of the phyla was also found in the surrounding soil environment. Specifically, Arcobacter, Flavobacterium, Hyphomicrobium, Pseudomonas and Sphingomonas, bacteria retrieved by HTS in high abundance, were inferred to be potentially associated with the biodegradation of WAWs at the Jingtoushan Site. Meanwhile, it is hypothesized that lignin in the wooden artefacts still buried and unexcavated at the Site might be at risk of further degradation, although it may be better preserved than the cellulose and hemicellulose. Catalpabungei is an economically important native hardwood in China whose hygroscopic behavior is vital for industrial applications as it influences the final product's dimensional stability and mechanical properties. In this study, the adsorption and desorption behavior of earlywood and latewood in the same growth ring of C. bungei wood samples was documented using a dynamic vapor sorption resolution and analyzed using the Guggenheim–Andersen–de Boer (GAB) model. The earlywood and latewood exhibited varying sorption isotherms and hysteresis degrees, and the reasons were analyzed in terms of structure and chemical composition (mainly hemicellulose and lignin). The influence of benzene–alcohol extracts and vessels on sorption characteristics was also examined. The GAB model perfectly fits the experimental data (R2 ≥ 99.7%) over the full relative humidity range. Specifically, parameters such as the internal specific surface area of wood can be obtained from the GAB model to help explain the differences in sorption properties between earlywood and latewood. The maximum water content bound to the primary sites for earlywood and latewood is 6.87% and 7.47%, respectively. Correspondingly, two internal specific surface areas are 261 m2/g and 284 m2/g, respectively. The adsorption isotherms of earlywood and latewood in C. bungei cannot be fully classified as type II.
