Germination paper (GP) is used as a growth substrate in plant development studies. Current studies bear two limitations: (1) The actual GP water content and variations in GP water content are neglected. (2) Existing irrigation methods either maintain the GP water content at fully sufficient or at a constant deficit. Variation of the intensity of water deficit over time for plants grown on GP is not directly achievable using these methods. In this contribution, a new measurement and control approach was presented. As a first step, a more precise measurement of water content was realized by employing the discharging process of capacitors to determine the electrical resistance of GP, which is related to the water content. A Kalman filter using an evapotranspiration model in combination with experimental data was used to refine the measurements, serving as the input for a model predictive controller (MPC). The MPC was used to improve the dynamics of the irrigation amount to more precisely achieve the required water content for regulated water uptake in plant studies. This is important in studies involving deficit irrigation. The novel method described was capable of increasing the accuracy of GP water content control. As a first step, the measurement system achieved an improved accuracy of 0.22 g/g. The application of a MPC for water content control based on the improved measurement results in an overall control accuracy was 0.09 g/g. This method offers a new approach, allowing the use of GP for studies with varying water content. This addressed the limitations of existing plant growth studies and allowed the prospection of dependencies between dynamic water deficit and plant development using GP as a growth substrate for research studies.

The growing demand for various types of paper highlights the importance of optimizing the kraft pulping process to achieve desired paper properties. This work proposes a novel multiscale model to optimize the kraft pulping process and obtain desired paper properties. The model combines mass and energy balance equations with a layered kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) algorithm to predict the degradation of wood chips, the depolymerization of cellulose, and the spatio-temporal evolution of the Kappa number and cellulose degree of polymerization ( D P ). A surrogate LSTM-ANN model is trained on data generated from the multiscale model under different operating conditions, dealing with both time-varying and time-invariant inputs, and an LSTM-ANN-based model predictive controller is designed to achieve desired set-point values of the Kappa number and cellulose D P while considering process constraints. The results show that the LSTM-ANN-based controller is able to drive the process to desired set-point values with the use of a computationally faster surrogate model with high accuracy and low offset. The cross-directional model predictive control (CD-MPC) tuning problem is investigated for multiple-array paper-making process with parametric uncertainty. A systematic spatial tuning method is proposed to tune the penalty matrices such that the harmful high frequency elements in each actuator profile can be eliminated. A multivariable temporal filter is employed to adjust the output references, and a temporal tuning algorithm is developed for the filter parameters to achieve the pre-specified 2 σ performance indices. The computational time of the proposed methods is reduced via event-based sampling strategy. The effectiveness of the techniques is shown via a CD system from paper-making industry. This paper solves the controller tuning problem of machine-directional predictive control for multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) paper-making processes represented as superposition of first-order-plus-dead-time (FOPDT) components with uncertain model parameters. A user-friendly multi-variable tuning problem is formulated based on user-specified time domain specifications and then simplified based on the structure of the closed-loop system. Based on the simplified tuning problem and a proposed performance evaluation technique, a fast multi-variable tuning technique is developed by ignoring the constraints of the MPC. In addition, a technique to predict the computation time of the tuning algorithm is proposed. The efficiency of the proposed method is verified through Honeywell real time simulator platform with a MIMO paper-making process obtained from real data from an industrial site. This paper builds on the work of Degond, Herty and Liu in [16] by considering NN-player stochastic differential games. The control corresponding to a Nash equilibrium of such a game is approximated through model predictive control (MPC) techniques. In the case of a linear quadratic running-cost, considered here, the MPC method is shown to approximate the solution to the control problem by the best reply strategy (BRS) for the running cost. We then compare the MPC approach when taking the mean field limit with the popular mean field game (MFG) strategy. We find that our MPC approach reduces the two coupled PDEs to a single PDE, greatly increasing the simplicity and tractability of the original problem. With the rapid development of today's society, the traffic environment has become more and more complex. As an essential part of intelligent vehicles, trajectory tracking has attracted significant attention for its stability and safety. It is prone to poor accuracy and instability in extreme working conditions like high speed. In this paper, a trajectory tracking control strategy to ensure lateral stability at a high speed and low attachment limit conditions is proposed for distributed drive vehicles. The model predictive controller (MPC) was used to control the front wheel angle, and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm was designed to optimize the MPC control parameters adaptively. The sliding mode controller controls the rear wheel angle, and the vehicle instability degree is judged by analyzing the β − β ˙ phase plane. The controllers of different instability degrees are designed herein. Finally, a torque divider is designed to consider the actuation anti-slip. The designed controller is verified by Carsim and MATLAB-Simulink co-simulation. When humanoid robots work in human environments, they are prone to falling. However, when there are objects around that can be utilized, humanoid robots can leverage them to achieve balance. To address this issue, this paper established the state equation of a robot using a variable height-inverted pendulum model and implemented online trajectory optimization using model predictive control. For the arms' optimal joint angles during movement, this paper took the distributed polygon method to calculate the arm postures. To ensure that the robot reached the target position smoothly and rapidly during its motion, this paper adopts a whole-body motion control approach, establishing a cost function for multi-objective constraints on the robot's movement. These constraints include whole-body dynamics, center of mass constraints, arm's end effector constraints, friction constraints, and center of pressure constraints. In the simulation, four sets of methods were compared, and the experimental results indicate that compared to free fall motion, adopting the method proposed in this paper reduces the maximum acceleration of the robot when it touches the wall to 69.1 m/s2, effectively reducing the impact force upon landing. Finally, in the actual experiment, we positioned the robot 0.85 m away from the wall and applied a forward pushing force. We observed that the robot could stably land on the wall, and the impact force was within the range acceptable to the robot, confirming the practical effectiveness of the proposed method. Recently, the intelligent platoon has attracted a lot of attention in both academic and industrial research. For each intelligent platoon, all vehicles drive sequentially in a line, which helps to improve fuel economy and road capacity. Consider two adjacent vehicles in the intelligent platoon, and there is no mechanical boundary between them. However, an intelligent platoon may still suffer from the issues of poor vehicle-following performance during the process of vehicle-following, especially when it obtains its own position and other parameters inaccurately. To address this issue, this paper proposes a model predictive control method based on an improved version of Kalman filtering, aiming to enhance the anti-interference capacity of intelligent platoons in scenarios where the following vehicles have acquired inaccurate parameters resulting from environmental disturbances and sensor noise. Firstly, this paper establishes a three-degree-of-freedom single-track model for the following vehicle, conducting dynamic analysis of its lateral, longitudinal, and yaw movements. Then, this paper develops a horizontal and longitudinal formation driving control frame of the intelligent vehicle platoon. Moreover, this paper also has employed Kalman filtering for interference reduction of state parameters and designs an improved model predictive controller. The proposed scheme is verified and evaluated through a joint simulation within Carsim and MATLAB/Simulink, and the results demonstrate that the longitudinal following error is reduced by 37% and the lateral following error is reduced by 51% compared to traditional algorithms, effectively improving the stability of intelligent vehicle platoons during following driving. In this paper, a robust control method is introduced for autonomous vehicle control in different scenarios. Dual controllers have been used in this method to ensure high performance and low errors during the vehicle’s trip. The new control system is called Model Predictive and Stanley based controller (MPS), which is an integration of a model predictive controller and a Stanley controller. Each of these two controllers has its drawbacks and weaknesses. The proposed method tries to overcome these points and come up with a high-performance control system. This hybrid way of combining two of the famous controllers has the benefit of using the best part of each one and trying to enhance the other part. The MPS is tested for both path-following and vehicle control in different scenarios and on both straight and curved roads. This controller has shown high performance and flexibility to deal with different scenarios of autonomous driving. Nonholonomic constrained wheeled mobile robot (WMR) trajectory tracking requires the enhancement of the ground adaptation capability of the WMR while ensuring its attitude tracking accuracy, a novel dual closed-loop control structure is developed to implement this motion/force coordinated control objective in this paper. Firstly, the outer-loop motion controller is presented using Laguerre functions modified model predictive control (LMPC). Optimised solution condition is introduced to reduce the number of LMPC solutions. Secondly, an inner-loop force controller based on adaptive integral sliding mode control (AISMC) is constructed to ensure the desired velocity tracking and output driving torques by combining second-order nonlinear extended state observer (ESO) with the estimation of dynamic uncertainties and external disturbances during WMR travelling process. Then, Lyapunov stability theory is utilised to guarantee the consistent final boundedness of the designed controller. Finally, the system is numerically simulated and practically verified. The results show that the double-closed-loop control strategy devised in this paper has better control performance in terms of complex trajectory tracking accuracy, system resistance to strong interference and computational timeliness, and is able to realise effective coordinated control of WMR motion/force. The paper presents a case study that applies a model predictive control (MPC) approach in a Micro850 programmable logic controller (PLC) to a laboratory pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process used for separating gas mixtures of CO2 and CH4. PLC is an industrial hardware characterized by its robustness to hazardous environments and limited computational capacities, which poses computational challenges for MPC implementation. This paper's main contribution is the application of the modified Takagi–Sugeno–Kang-based MPC (MTSK-MPC) algorithm to this PSA unit, which provides features to investigate and implement feasible MPC designs in PLCs. The investigation consists of a sensitivity analysis of how some design parameters influence the PLC memory and the MPC implementation and a comparative evaluation of the computational processing from different MPC algorithms and simulations. The comparison comprises software-in-the-loop simulations with three algorithms in the PC: an implicit MPC, an explicit MPC, and the MTSK-MPC. Additionally, it includes a hardware-in-the-loop simulation with the implemented MTSK-MPC in Micro850. The results show that the MPC algorithms achieve close performance, tracking setpoint changes and rejecting output disturbances, with the MTSK-MPC presenting the lower processing time among the MPCs in the PC. In this paper, a wave-to-wire global optimal control framework for a networked wave-energy converter array (WECA) power system is presented. For the proposed framework, a distributed global optimal control method considering maximum wave energy harvesting and optimal power dispatch (OPD) is developed in the WECA system for precise power output. First, the WECA including G-type and S-type nodes is modeled, and the corresponding model predictive control (MPC) and primary control strategy are developed to maximally harvest the wave energy and to accurately track the dispatched reference power. Second, a distributed OPD method integrating convex optimization and consensus is proposed to actively regulate each energy storage (ES) unit and to manage the power system to satisfy the specified power output reference. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control method is investigated and analyzed by semi-physical hardware-in-loop simulation tests. In the context of increasing energy demands and the integration of renewable energy sources, this review focuses on recent advancements in energy storage control strategies from 2016 to the present, evaluating both experimental and simulation studies at component, system, building, and district scales. Out of 426 papers screened, 147 were assessed for eligibility, with 56 included in the final review. As a first outcome, this work proposes a novel classification and taxonomy update for advanced storage control systems, aiming to bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical implementation. Furthermore, the study emphasizes experimental case studies, moving beyond numerical analyses to provide practical insights. It investigates how the literature on energy storage is enhancing building flexibility and resilience, highlighting the application of advanced algorithms and artificial intelligence methods and their impact on energy and financial savings. By exploring the correlation between control algorithms and the resulting benefits, this review provides a comprehensive analysis of the current state and future perspectives of energy storage control in smart grids and buildings. In this paper, a new model predictive control termed as intelligent model predictive control (IMPC) combined with an improved new competitive swarm optimizer (CSO) is designed. The analytical predictive model is not necessarily established a priori in the proposed IMPC algorithm, and the control plant can be used directly as the predictive model to reduce the complexity of the algorithm. In addition, two new techniques, dynamic initialization and back steps methods, are proposed and utilized to improve the traditional CSO to realize constraints management during the optimization process. An application to aeroengine transient-state control is studied to verify the effectiveness of the presented IMPC algorithm. It is shown that, benefitting from the IMPC algorithm, the control task is well completed and all the constraints are satisfied. Practical Applications: This paper proposes a new optimization algorithm to solve some complex optimization problems with constraints. The designed new optimization algorithm is simple and easy to implement and it is more suitable for applications with black-box models or complex optimization objective functions compared with some existing optimization algorithms. This paper may provide some help to researchers who are interested in model predictive control or metaheuristic algorithms and to people whose work contains some complex optimization problems. This paper also provides a design method of aeroengine transient-state control plans. The simulation results showed that compared with some existing control methods or optimization algorithms, the aeroengine could accelerate to the desired steady-state point with shorter transient time and all constraints are satisfied when utilizing the proposed new optimization algorithm. Due to the impact of source-load prediction power errors and uncertainties, the actual operation of the park will have a wide range of fluctuations compared with the expected state, resulting in its inability to achieve the expected economy. This paper constructs an operating simulation model of the park power grid operation considering demand response and proposes a multi-time scale operating simulation method that combines day-ahead optimization and model predictive control (MPC). In the day-ahead stage, an operating simulation plan that comprehensively considers the user's side comfort and operating costs is proposed with a long-term time scale of 15 min. In order to cope with power fluctuations of photovoltaic, wind turbine and conventional load, MPC is used to track and roll correct the day-ahead operating simulation plan in the intra-day stage to meet the actual operating operation status of the park. Hydro-viscous clutch has already become an inevitable choice for special vehicle transmission in the present and future. As a nonlinear system with a large hysteresis loop, its speed control performance is affected by input rotational speed, lubricating oil temperature, lubrication pressure, and other factors. The traditional control method cannot adjust the temperature and rotational speed, which will lead to problems of narrow speed range, poor rotational speed stability, and large dynamic load impact. In order to solve the above problems, this paper studies the control method of an integrated multi-parameter hydro-viscous speed control system (HSCS) in a controlled environment. Through the mechanism analysis of the law of HSCS, the influence law of speed and temperature during the system operation is found. The temperature closed loop based on model predictive control (MPC) is introduced to control the rotational speed, and then the traditional PID control results are compensated according to the speed closed loop. Next, a novel double closed loop control method of temperature and rotational speed for HSCS is formed. Finally, the simulating verification is carried out. Compared with the traditional control method, the design method in this paper can adjust the control parameters according to the temperature of the lubricating oil and the input rotational speed and effectively expand the domain of HSCS and the speed control stability. The effective transmission ratio is extended to 0.2~0.8, and the hydro-viscous torque and speed fluctuation under the engine rotational speed fluctuation are reduced by more than 30%. The novel control method of HSCS designed in this paper can effectively improve the influence of input rotational speed and lubricating oil temperature on the speed control performance of HSCS and can be widely used in nonlinear HSCS such as hydro-viscous clutch. Featured Application: For the controllable pitch propeller control system, existing control algorithms still have limitations regarding timeliness. A control law based on a model predictive control (MPC) algorithm is designed in this paper. The results of this paper have potential application value in embedded control of ship controllable pitch propeller. The controllable pitch propeller hydraulic system has high constraints and nonlinearity. Due to these inherent deficiencies, the proportional–integral–derivative (PID) control algorithm cannot meet the control accuracy requirements of nonlinear systems. A control law based on a model predictive control (MPC) algorithm is designed in this paper. The gain parameters of the predictive control are optimized. The MPC and PID control systems are compared and simulated to verify the MPC controller's effectiveness. Subsequently, the embedded controller of a controllable pitch propeller is developed. The support package for the embedded circuit board target containing an underlying driver for each interface is written by introducing the C-MEX S-Function and TLC programming language. A semi-physical simulation experiment is performed. The results show that the established controllable pitch propeller with an embedded controller displays reliable running performance, good anti-interference, and the capacity to fulfill the control function of the pitch propeller under various working conditions. This paper presents a centralized disturbance suppression strategy for distributed drive electric vehicles which is based on model predictive direct motion control. This strategy is capable of addressing issues such as parameter uncertainties and external disturbances in vehicles. Firstly, the paper provides a brief introduction to model predictive direct motion control. Secondly, it analyzes the impact of vehicle parameter uncertainties and external disturbances on the mathematical model. Finally, a centralized disturbance suppression strategy based on a sliding mode observer is proposed. This paper investigates the implementation of a model-based predictive control (MPC) strategy to improve the performance of a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill in a uranium mineral processing plant. The SAG mill, crucial in crushing and grinding uranium ore to the desired size, is currently managed using conventional proportionalintegral-derivative (PID) controllers. However, to enhance production efficiency and control over the SAG mill's variables, this paper suggests the adoption of MPC. The proposed MPC controller is developed using a neural network (NN) model of the SAG mill, created in MATLAB with data collected over 21 days. The effectiveness of the MPC controller is assessed by contrasting its response with that of the real-time operator control. This comparison utilizes tools like MATLAB and the RSlinx remote server for accessing OPC real-time data. Findings reveal that the MPC controller exhibits a quicker reaction to alterations in the SAG mill's process outputs and proficiently regulates crucial outputs such as Mill mass, ensuring that the manipulated variables stay within their designated limits. Unlike operator control, which is slower and adjusts one variable at a time, the MPC approach can maximize the mill's throughput rate without impacting the ore feed rate. The wind power generation system of a 5 MW horizontal axis wind turbine has a high wind energy conversion efficiency. The proportion of installed capacity in practical production applications is increasing year on year, so that the stability of its operation becomes a central factor in determining the productivity of the wind farm in question. This paper takes a 5 MW wind turbine as the research object and proposes a parameter‐adaptive robust model predictive control method to achieve self‐optimization of controller parameters through a Bayesian optimization approach. A robust model predictive control strategy, aiming to reduce the power fluctuation while maximizing the power output, is developed in this paper to enhance the dynamic economic performance under uncertain wind speed variation. A Bayesian algorithm is used in this paper to optimize the parameters of the controller. Moreover, wind speeds are simulated using TurbSim for different turbulence intensities of 5%, 10%, and 15% turbulence. Finally, the robust model predictive control toolbox in MATLAB is designed and simulated. The results show that the operational instability of the wind energy system is overcome. This paper presents a model predictive control based framework that is used in conjunction with a polytope boundary constraint and the Hill-Clohessy-Wiltshire equations to maintain a desired formation of a cluster of spacecraft while also allowing freedom to maneuver within the allowable bounds. A fuel optimal guidance trajectory is generated and the model predictive control framework controls to this desired trajectory. The operational polytope boundaries enable the predictive framework of the model predictive control to be used to make small maneuvers to correct perturbations from its desired trajectory. The boundaries are designed such that no two agents have overlapping regions, allowing the vehicles to execute avoidance strategies without continually maintaining the trajectories of other agents. The model predictive control framework combined with the convex polytope boundary enables a scalable method that can support clusters of satellites in safely achieving mission objectives while minimizing fuel usage. As part of the implementation of this control scheme, this paper compares the fuel usage for a three spacecraft system. Single-phase rectifiers are one of the most practical instruments with various applications. Among them, active front-end (AFE) rectifiers are introduced with bidirectional power transfer capability for power factor correction and the elimination of current harmonics. This paper proposes an adaptive model predictive control (MPC) for a single-phase AFE rectifier. The AFE topology used in this paper is a half-bridge boost converter. This topology has higher efficiency than other single-phase AFEs due to the fewer number of active semiconductor devices. Considering the presence of one leg of capacitors in this topology, balancing the voltages of these capacitors is a challenge, along with other control objectives. Also, this paper benefits from an MPC approach by which the switching signal for every switching state is chosen such that the defined cost function is minimized in the operation state to achieve all control goals based on the predefined model of the rectifier. Furthermore, an adaptive algorithm for the inductor current estimation is presented to robustify the control system against any unwanted disturbance in the control system. As a demonstration of the superior performance of the proposed method, a 1kW rectifier setup with 700Vdc output voltage fed from a 230Vrms/50Hz grid is built in the laboratory. The applicability of the MPC controller is verified and all operation waveforms of the test setup are presented. The proposed method offers a high-quality input current with total harmonic distortion (THD) below 5% and a high-power factor (PF) close to one. This paper presents a novel approach for model predictive control dynamics applied to a two-link manipulator robot. The technique involves the initial step of linearizing the inherently nonlinear dynamic model of the robot through the application of feedback linearization control. Once the linear model is derived, a predictive control strategy is developed to enhance the robot's overall performance. To achieve this, we introduce a quadratic criterion, and the associated parameters are meticulously computed to induce specific behaviors within the closed-loop system. The primary objective of this study is to effectively control the arm robot, guiding it from an initial configuration to a desired final configuration by employing the predictive control approach, all while minimizing the quadratic criterion. The chosen criterion serves as a crucial metric in evaluating the system's response and optimizing its behavior during the control process. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a series of simulation results are provided, showcasing the system's performance under various conditions. These simulations serve as empirical evidence supporting the feasibility and efficiency of the introduced model predictive control approach for the dynamics of a twolink manipulator robot. A tight formation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has many advantages, such as fuel saving and deceiving enemy radar during battlefield entry. As a result, research on UAVs in close formation has received much attention, and the controller design for formation holding has become a popular research topic in the control field. However, there are many unknown disturbances in tight formation, and the tail aircraft is disturbed by the wake. This paper establishes a mathematical model of wake vortices for tail aircraft that considers uncertainty and strong interference. Two UAVs are simulated by Computational Fluid Dynamics software, followed by the design of a semiphysical simulation model predictive control (MPC) scheme that suppresses uncertainty and interference sufficiently to enable the tail aircraft to accurately track the lead aircraft and maintain a stable, tight formation. The tight formation controller is verified by numerical simulation and semiphysical simulation. This paper discusses the issue of optimizing the communication between the components of a cooperating control system formed by a pair of MPC controllers of a nuclear power plant turbine set using online recursive least squares identification. It is proposed to use event-triggered communication, i.e., sending information only at selected time instants, as opposed to the standard approach where communication is triggered by time (time-triggered approach). The aim of this paper is to propose a change in the method of information exchange in the case of asynchronous communication between control system components and to prove its suitability for the selected application. Resignation from continuous communication in favor of sending information only at selected moments allows the load on the communication network to be reduced by approximately 90% while maintaining the quality of control. Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are widely used for the inspection of seabed pipelines. To address the issues of low trajectory tracking accuracy in AUV inspection processes due to uncertain ocean current disturbances, this paper designs a new dual-loop controller based on Model Predictive Control (MPC) and Variable Universe S-plane algorithms (S-VUD FLC, where VUD represents Variable Universe Discourse and FLC represents Fuzzy Logic Control) to achieve three-dimensional (3-D) trajectory tracking of an over-actuated AUV under uncertain ocean current disturbances. This paper uses MPC as the outer-loop position controller and S-VUD FLC as the inner-loop speed controller. The outer-loop controller generates desired speed instructions that are passed to the inner-loop speed controller, while the inner-loop speed controller generates control input and uses a direct logic thrust distribution method that approaches optimal energy consumption to distribute the thrust generated by the propellers to the over-actuated AUV, achieving closed-loop tracking of the entire trajectory. When designing the outer-loop MPC controller, the actual control input constraints of the system are considered, and control increments are introduced to reduce control model errors and the impact of uncertain external disturbances on the actual AUV model parameters. When designing the inner-loop S-VUD FLC, the strong robustness of the variable universe fuzzy controller and the easy construction characteristics of the S-plane algorithm are combined, and integral action is introduced to improve the system's tracking accuracy. The stability of the outer loop controller is proven by the Lyapunov method, and the stability of the inner loop controller is verified by simulation. Finally, simulations show that the over-actuated AUV has fast tracking processes and high tracking result accuracy under uncertain ocean current disturbances, demonstrating the effectiveness of the designed dual-loop controller. Cooperative trajectory planning of aerial-ground systems is a fundamental and challenging problem, which aims to leverage the aerial information to assist the ground tasks. Existing methods often suffer from suboptimal trajectories or computation burden. In this paper, we address cooperative trajectory planning of aerial-ground systems in which an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) plans its local trajectory in real-time with the assistance of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Firstly, the UAV generates guidance trajectory using nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC), which considers the obstacle distribution density as a factor reflecting the coupling effect of multiple obstacles on the UGV, thereby avoiding local minima problem and improving the feasibility of the planned trajectory. Secondly, a null-space-based behavioral control (NSBC) framework is employed to merge the guidance trajectory into the UGV’s own planned one as a task. Finally, an event triggering task supervisor is developed for the UGV to decide the priorities of all tasks, which reduces the switching frequency of task priorities brought by traditional rule-based task supervisors. Both simulation and experiment results show that the proposed approach has superior trajectory planning performance in terms of trajectory error, on-line computation time and the success rate of task execution.
