Background: The under‐detection of depression in adolescents suggests that a better understanding of its presentation may be needed. Conceptualizations of adolescent depression are largely the same as adult depression, with minimal consideration of developmental stage. Exploration of first‐hand accounts could help to identify any unique features of adolescent depression. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to understand the lived experience of adolescents with depression to inform clinical practice. Methods: The review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020198141). Databases (PsychINFO, CINAL, MEDLINE and EMBASE) were searched in March 2022 to identify peer‐reviewed qualitative studies on first‐hand experiences of adolescent depression. The Joanna Briggs Institute's qualitative data extraction tool and checklist for qualitative research were used to obtain study data and assess methodological quality of included papers. Meta‐aggregation was the method of synthesis, whereby extracted themes from the papers were grouped according to shared meanings. Results: Fifteen papers of mixed methodological quality were identified for inclusion from screening a total of 1,983 references. Studies were published between 2002 and 2021, spanned seven countries and included participants aged 11 to 22 years old. Aggregation of 56 themes resulted in 16 categories and 3 synthesized findings encompassing key aspects of adolescent depression: causes, symptoms and coping. Variability in adolescents' perspectives across these domains was evident. Some symptoms described, such as social disconnection and anger, are not listed in existing diagnostic criteria. Conclusions: Subjective experiences of depression among adolescents vary and may not entirely match diagnostic criteria. Background: Shared decision-making is a key element of person-centred care and promoted as the favoured model in preference-sensitive decision-making. Limitations to implementation have been observed, and barriers and limitations, both generally and in the palliative setting, have been highlighted. More knowledge about the process of shared decision-making in palliative cancer care would assist in addressing these limitations. Aim: To identify and synthesise qualitative data on how people with cancer, informal carers and healthcare professionals experience and perceive shared decision-making in palliative cancer care. Design: A systematic review and metasynthesis of qualitative studies. We analysed data using inductive thematic analysis. Data sources: We searched five electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL and Scopus) from inception until June 2023, supplemented by backward searches. Results: We identified and included 23 studies, reported in 26 papers. Our analysis produced four analytical themes; (1) Overwhelming situation of 'no choice', (2) Processes vary depending on the timings and nature of the decisions involved, (3) Patient-physician dyad is central to decision-making, with surrounding support and (4) Level of involvement depends on interactions between individuals and systems. Conclusion: Shared decision-making in palliative cancer care is a complex process of many decisions in a challenging, multifaceted and evolving situation where equipoise and choice are limited. Implications for practice: Implementing shared decision-making in clinical practice requires (1) clarifying conceptual confusion, (2) including members of the interprofessional team in the shared decision-making process and (3) adapting the approach to the ambiguous, existential situations which arise in palliative cancer care. Rationale, aims and objectives Complex and chronic disease is placing significant pressure on hospital outpatient departments. Novel ways of delivering care have been developed recently and are often described as 'triage' services. This paper reviews the literature pertaining to definitions and descriptions of orthopaedic/musculoskeletal triage processes, in order to provide information on 'best practice' to assist health care facilities. Method A comprehensive open-ended search was conducted using electronic databases to identify studies describing models of triage clinics for patients with a musculoskeletal/orthopaedic complaint, who have been referred to hospital outpatient clinics for a surgical consultation. Studies were critically appraised using the McMaster quality appraisal tool and ranked using the National Health and Medical Research Council hierarchy of evidence. A thematic analysis of the definitions, processes and procedures of triage described within the literature was undertaken. Results 1930 studies were identified and 45 were included in the review (including diagnostic and evaluative research). The hierarchy of evidence ranged from I to IV; however, the majority were at low levels of evidence and scored poorly on the critical appraisal tool. Three broad themes of triage were identified: presence of a referral, configuration of the triage (who, how and where) and the aim of triage. However, there were significant inconsistencies across these themes. Conclusions This systematic review highlighted the need for standardization of the definition of triage, the procedures of assessment and management and measures of outcome used in orthopaedic/musculoskeletal triage to ensure best-practice processes, procedures and outcomes for triage clinics. Aim. To understand nurses' perceptions and experiences of work role transitions. Background. Globally an uncertain healthcare landscape exists and when changing work roles nurses experience periods of transition when they may not cope well. A greater understanding of work role transitions may help facilitate workforce retention and successful careers. Design. Mixed methods systematic review. Data sources. Six data bases were searched for peer reviewed primary empirical research, published in English language between January 1990 and December 2014, supplemented by hand and citation searching. Review methods. Evidence for Policy and Practice Information and Co-ordinating Centre methods for systematic reviews principles were followed. Analysis and synthesis of the qualitative and quantitative papers was conducted separately using thematic analysis. A third synthesis combined the narrative findings and a narrative synthesis of results is presented. Results. Twenty-six papers were included. Across nurses' work role transitions two pathways were found: Novice and Experienced. 'Novice' comprises pre-registration and newly qualified nurses. 'Experienced' comprises, Enrolled/Licensed Practical Nurse to Registered Nurse, experienced to specialist nurse and clinical role changes. Each pathway results in different emphasizes of two themes; 'Striving for a new professional self' includes emotional upheaval and identity while 'Know how' includes competence and boundaries. Novice nurses are more susceptible to the extremes of emotional upheaval while experienced nurses' competence eases aspects of transitions while boundary issues pervade. Conclusion. Informed work and educational environments are required for all groups of nurses. Using existing models of transition can facilitate successful individual transitions and develop the workplace. Background: patient and public involvement (PPI) in research can enhance its relevance. Older care-home residents are often not involved in research processes even when studies are care-home focused. Objective: to conduct a systematic review to find out to what extent and how older care-home residents have been involved in research as collaborators or advisors. Methods: a systematic literature search of 12 databases, covering the period from 1990 to September 2014 was conducted. A lateral search was also carried out. Standardised inclusion criteria were used and checked independently by two researchers. Results: nineteen reports and papers were identified relating to 11 different studies. Care-home residents had been involved in the research process in multiple ways. Two key themes were identified: (i) the differences in residents' involvement in small-scale and large-scale studies and (ii) the barriers to and facilitators of involvement. Conclusions: small-scale studies involved residents as collaborators in participatory action research, whereas larger studies involved residents as consultants in advisory roles. There are multiple facilitators of and barriers to involving residents as PPI members. The reporting of PPI varies. While it is difficult to evaluate the impact of involving care-home residents on the research outcomes, impact has been demonstrated from more inclusive research processes with care-home residents. Abstract: Aims: To determine the factors contributing to managerial competence of first‐line nurse managers. Background: Understanding factors affecting managerial competence of nurse managers remains important to increase the performance of organizations; however, there is sparse research examining factors that influence managerial competence of first‐line nurse managers. Design: Systematic review. Data sources: The search strategy was conducted from April to July 2017 that included 6 electronic databases: Science Direct, PROQUEST Dissertations and Theses, MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, and Google Scholar for the years 2000 to 2017 with full text in English. Quantitative and qualitative research papers that examined relationships among managerial competence and antecedent factors were included. Review methods: Quality assessment, data extractions, and analysis were completed on all included studies. Content analysis was used to categorize factors into themes. Results: Eighteen influencing factors were examined and categorized into 3 themes—organizational factors, characteristics and personality traits of individual managers, and role factors. Conclusion: Findings suggest that managerial competence of first‐line nurse managers is multifactorial. Aim(s): To explore intensive care nurses' (ICN) perceptions of simulation‐based learning (SBL). Design: A systematic review and meta‐synthesis. Methods: The review followed the PRISMA guidelines for reporting a systematic review. A systematic search strategy was developed using a modified PICo framework. A comprehensive search was conducted in July 2023 in CINAHL, OVID Embase, Medline complete, Web of Science, ERIC and Scopus databases for articles published in English between 2013 and 2023. Data were extracted using the Joanna Briggs Institute QARI Data Extraction, with data synthesis guided by Braun and Clark's thematic analysis approach. Quality appraisal was assessed using the CASP tool. Results: Eleven studies providing qualitative data were included for analysis. Analysis and meta‐synthesis led to the construction of two themes: The learning experience and professional growth through collaboration. Conclusion: The review highlights the balance needed in finding the appropriate simulation approach, with the right level of fidelity, conducted at appropriately regular intervals, incorporating the correct makeup of professional team members, conducted in the right environment and facilitated by a skilled facilitator, to ensure best outcomes and return on investment for ICN's education. Implications for Practice: These findings are a valuable resource for educators and organisations considering simulation‐based learning initiatives in the intensive care setting. Background: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood disorder with international prevalence estimates of 5 % in childhood, yet significant evidence exists that far fewer children receive ADHD services. In many countries, ADHD is assessed and diagnosed in specialist mental health or neuro-developmental paediatric clinics, to which referral by General (Family) Practitioners (GPs) is required. In such 'gatekeeper' settings, where GPs act as a filter to diagnosis and treatment, GPs may either not recognise potential ADHD cases, or may be reluctant to refer. This study systematically reviews the literature regarding GPs' views of ADHD in such settings. Methods: A search of nine major databases was conducted, with wide search parameters; 3776 records were initially retrieved. Studies were included if they were from settings where GPs are typically gatekeepers to ADHD services; if they addressed GPs' ADHD attitudes and knowledge; if methods were clearly described; and if results for GPs were reported separately from those of other health professionals. Results: Few studies specifically addressed GP attitudes to ADHD. Only 11 papers (10 studies), spanning 2000-2010, met inclusion criteria, predominantly from the UK, Europe and Australia. As studies varied methodologically, findings are reported as a thematic narrative, under the following themes: Recognition rate; ADHD controversy (medicalisation, stigma, labelling); Causes of ADHD; GPs and ADHD diagnosis; GPs and ADHD treatment; GP ADHD training and sources of information; and Age, sex differences in knowledge and attitudes. Conclusions: Across times and settings, GPs practising in first-contact gatekeeper settings had mixed and often unhelpful attitudes regarding the validity of ADHD as a construct, the role of medication and how parenting contributed to presentation. A paucity of training was identified, alongside a reluctance of GPs to become involved in shared care practice. If access to services is to be improved for possible ADHD cases, there needs to be a focused and collaborative approach to training. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Siblings of children requiring palliative care are often forgotten and overlooked, as the focus tends to be on the ill child and their parents. Limited knowledge of non-bereaved siblings' perspectives makes it challenging to provide appropriate support for them. A review of existing literature is thus needed to better understand the experiences of these siblings and to identify research gaps that may require further examination. Aim: To consolidate the available qualitative evidence on the perspectives of non-bereaved healthy siblings regarding paediatric palliative care. Design: A qualitative systematic review using a meta-synthesis approach was conducted. Data sources: Six electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Embase, Scopus and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global) were searched from each database's inception date until October 2022. The search included qualitative and mixed-method studies that reported the perceptions and associations of siblings of patients receiving paediatric palliative care. Data were synthesised using thematic analysis. Results: Eleven studies were included. The overarching theme of the review would be 'A walking shadow: Living in the darkness shaped by the dying sibling', and three key themes and nine subthemes were identified from the included articles: (1) Changing family dynamics; (2) Impact on school and socialisation and (3) Psychological impact and coping. Conclusion: Siblings demonstrated negative psychological impacts and were affected by changing family structure and relationships. However, socialisation with society, and varied coping skills such as cognitive coping and using distraction techniques, were significant for siblings to go through this journey and even led to some positive outcomes for them. Objective: To synthesize the qualitative literature on adults' experiences of psychological therapy assessments. The review was led by people with experience of undergoing assessments, with high levels of client involvement throughout. Search strategy: A comprehensive search of electronic databases was undertaken, with additional search strategies employed to locate further literature. Inclusion criteria: Studies were included that qualitatively explored the experiences of people aged 16+ who had been assessed for psychological therapy services. Assessments could be structured or unstructured. Qualitative was defined as any analysed account of people's experiences, including qualitative survey data. Data extraction and synthesis: Literature quality was appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program checklist, modified to include client involvement and intersectionalities. Following data extraction, thematic synthesis was used to synthesize findings across studies. Results: Of 12 743 titles were screened, with 13 studies relevant to the review. Themes and subthemes were identified at three stages of the assessment process: the journey to the assessment, at the assessment, and after the assessment. Findings highlighted the emotional impact of assessments, collaboration, intersectionalities, rights, pathologization, socioeconomic restrictions, and information and support needs. Implications and limitations were indicated. Discussion and conclusions: Findings were situated within the trauma‐informed (TIA) literature. Trauma‐informed assessment principles, including collaborative assessments, may be fruitful means of improving people's experiences. Whilst the benefits of collaboration appear self‐evident, explicitly collaborative approaches were not the norm, nor were studies conducted independently. Further service user research is needed. Introduction: Pressure injuries are a significant cause of harm, contributing to increased mortality and financial burden on the healthcare system. Significant research on pressure injury risk assessment, prevention and treatment exists, but limited research exploring the patient and carer experience of living with pressure injury. Aims: The aim of this meta‐synthesis was to describe the patient and carer experience of living with a pressure injury. Design: Meta‐synthesis. Methods: A prospective review protocol was registered, and systematic search conducted across five electronic databases. The PRISMA 2020 checklist for reporting systematic reviews was used. Two reviewers independently undertook screening and review of articles, using the CASP checklist for evaluating qualitative research. A meta‐synthesis using thematic content analysis was undertaken. Results: Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria. Meta‐synthesis led to the construction of three primary themes: loss of autonomy and independence, psychological effects, and adjustment. Within these primary themes, sub‐themes of dependence, social isolation and social avoidance behaviours, feelings and emotions, loss, managing, physical consequences, service provision, and functional challenges, were identified. Conclusion: The psychology and mindset of those involved, and support to navigate the challenges that arise are two unique and clinically relevant categorisations to guide provision of pressure injury care. Adaptation to a pressure injury is multi‐faceted and contextual, challenges to adaptation create additional psychological burden. Interventions encompassing all facets of the experience are necessary. Current research into experiences is limited, and further research to support interventions is necessary. Background Self-harm is an important public health problem but therapeutic interventions, particularly for people who have a history of multiple repetition, are not always taken up or effective when they are. The aim of this review is to explore first-hand accounts of what helps outside therapy and identify actions and processes, which can support the reduction or cessation of self-harm. Methods A systematic review and thematic meta-synthesis of the first-person accounts of what has helped to reduce or stop self-harm reported in primary studies. Results The meta-synthesis combined 546 participant excerpts from 56 studies. Two over-arching themes were identified: (i) breaking the chain incorporated actions taken to break the link between a person's current psychological or social state and the act of self-harm and (ii) building a new foundation for change captured actions over the longer-term, focusing on practical changes in relationships and in a person's way of life, such as work or living arrangements. Conclusions The results emphasize the importance of interpersonal change in reducing or stopping self-harm. While interpersonal factors are acknowledged as important reasons behind self-harm, they are often under-represented in self-management advice and therapeutic interventions that focus on individual psychopathology. Introduction: Post‐burn scarring is often cosmetically unappealing and create discomfort. This makes it crucial to understand the experience of individuals living with scars which can offer insights into their recovery. This review sought to develop an in‐depth understanding of living with post‐burn scars. Design: A systematic review and meta‐ethnography approach were employed. We utilized an interpretive approach to inductively generate codes. These codes were examined iteratively using a constant comparison strategy following which they were re‐interpreted to formulate themes which formed the basis of undertaking a narrative synthesis. Results: Twenty‐five studies were retained. The analytical process yielded two themes: emergence of a new identity and living with the redefined self. The experience of living with scars is entwined with the initial trauma as the scars served as a permanent reminder of the injury. Emergence of a new identity involved a process of meaning making, mourning the loss of the old self, confronting the new self, reconciling the remains of the old self with the new, rebuilding a new identity, and navigating through functional restrictions. These processes were particularly challenging for persons involved in self‐immolation. Positive coping and changing one's perspective emerged as strategies to facilitate living with the redefined self. Conclusion: Living with scars is a challenging process which is more difficult for persons whose injuries are due to self‐immolation (act of burning oneself). The findings highlight a latent yet ongoing process towards subjective recovery. Clinicians need to be aware of the processes and incorporate these into rehabilitation programmes. Clinical relevance: Burn survivors need ongoing professional support to adjust to and live with the scars. Victims of self‐immolation should be considered for early psychosocial support. Health care providers are often "second victims" of traumatic childbirth events and should be adequately supported by their organizations to alleviate occupational stress and burnout. Therefore, this review aimed to explore and understand the vicarious traumatic childbirth experiences of health care providers, including obstetricians, midwives, nurses, and students. A systematic review of qualitative studies was conducted. Seven electronic databases, namely, PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane, Scopus, and Web of Science, were searched from each database's inception to May 2020. In total, 1,575 studies were retrieved and screened according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Seventeen studies were included in this review and were meta-summarized and then meta-synthesized using the Sandelowski and Barroso approach. The overarching theme of "Tunneling through the trauma with a hope of finding an end" was derived, and four main themes along with 15 subthemes were identified. The four main themes were (1) "instantaneous response to the trauma," (2) "finding hope in the midst of chaos," (3) "dealing with the aftermath," and (4) "resolution to move on." Communication and teamwork among health care team members were identified as challenges contributed by professional hierarchy and lack of role clarity. Midwives and labor and delivery nurses expressed powerlessness in advocating for women on many occasions, and health care providers often had feelings of guilt and self-blame after adverse events. Health care providers also reported inadequate support from their colleagues and organizations, which influenced their ability to cope with the aftermath of trauma and their decision to stay in the profession. Aims: To review and synthesize qualitative studies to gain a deeper understanding of critical care nurses' inter‐departmental and shift‐to‐shift handover challenges. Background: Good‐quality nurse‐to‐nurse handover promotes patient safety, while poor handover has been associated with medical errors. However, systematic reviews of qualitative approaches for better understanding the handover experiences of critical care nurses are lacking. Evaluation: Systematic review methods incorporating meta‐synthesis were used. A comprehensive search of seven databases was conducted. Two independent reviewers performed data extraction and evaluated ten studies using the Critical Appraisal Screening Program. Findings were analysed and synthesized using thematic analysis. The transactional model of communication was used to guide the analysis. Key issues: A total of 10 qualitative studies were included. Seven major handover themes were identified: (a) expectations of perfection, (b) need for partnership, (c) unilateral communication, (d) obstacles to information acquisition, (e) lack of pertinent patient information, (f) need for a structured handover and (g) interruptions/distractions. Conclusions: Handovers should be considered an essential part of patient‐centred care for ensuring continuity of care. Implications for Nursing Management: Poor communication during a handover could increase the nurse's burden or stress and adversely affect patient care. Background: Medication errors are a frequent phenomenon in nursing, as the nurses are primarily responsible for preparation and administration of medications to patients. Little is known about how nurses make sense of their experiences of medication errors as a lived phenomenon. Objective: To aggregate, synthesise and interpret the qualitative evidence of studies which explored nurses' lived experiences of medication errors. Method: A meta‐synthesis is presented with thematic analysis by Thomas & Harden (BMC Medical Research Methodology, 8, 2008, 45). Qualitative studies (January 1980–June 2018) retrieved from PubMed, BNI, CINAHL, EMBASE, AMED, PsycINFO, ProQuest, ScienceDirect and Wiley Online Library. The PRISMA flow chart, CASP tool and COREQ checklist are integrated in the meta‐synthesis. Findings: Eight primary research studies were included with the follow themes: "moral impact," "emotional impact," "constructive learning," "impact on professional registration and employment," "nurses' coping strategies with the experience," "patient and family," "identification of contributing factors to medication errors" and "preventive measures for medication errors." Conclusion: The moral and emotional impact of medication errors to nurses was devastating for themselves. Yet, they detected strategies to cope with their error and its consequences and even more translated their experience into a constructive lesson and identified ways to prevent future errors. Relevance for clinical practice: The meta‐synthesis provides a holistic perspective about how registered nurses made sense of their lived experiences of medication errors. Its findings reveal that the experience has both positive impact and negative impact to the nurses. Its findings should inform mainly the clinical nursing practice, clinical nurses, nurse educators, nurse leaders and policymakers of medication administration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Dietetics students are a widely researched group. As emerging dietitians, they can provide valuable insights to inform how dietetics education programmes may be enhanced to meet contemporary healthcare needs. This review aimed to systematically synthesise dietetics students' experiences of dietetics workforce preparation. Methods: MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, ERIC, Informit and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global were searched to identify research published until June 2017. Studies investigating dietetics students' experiences of dietetics workforce preparation, and employing qualitative data collection and analysis methods were included. Data analysis was guided by thematic synthesis, where themes were constructed through an iterative and inductive process. Study quality was appraised using the RATS Qualitative Research Review Guidelines. Results: From the 3301 records identified, five studies met the inclusion criteria and the views of 120 dietetics students from two countries over a 9‐year period were synthesised. The overarching theme of 'navigating through the ups and downs' was underpinned by four main themes: enduring hurdles; reconciling expectations; transforming self; and making and breaking connections. Quality appraisal results rated selection bias as being inadequate/inappropriate across all studies. Conclusions: Dietetics students undertake a transformational journey through dietetics education. They are inspired by seeing what is possible through meaningful encounters with practitioners in diverse settings. However, they are challenged by competitive environments and perceived ideals that are embedded in the profession. Strategies that focus on exposing dietetics students to inspirational practitioners, increasing and celebrating diversity in academic/placement settings, and incentivising collaboration across dietetics education, could act as catalysts to enhance the experience of future dietetics students and the nutrition‐related health of those they will serve. Objective: To examine parents’ experiences during their child’s return to school following ABI. Research design: Systematic literature review. Methods: Six electronic databases relevant to the fields of brain injury and education were searched between 1980–2015. In addition, two qualitative journals and references from articles were hand-searched for further literature. Search results were screened independently by two reviewers for relevance. Studies meeting the inclusion criteria were analysed using the McMasters Critical Review Form for Qualitative Studies. Results: Two hundred and sixteen articles were screened after duplicates had been removed and 11 were assessed for relevance, resulting in six full text articles for review. The quality of studies was mixed, with only two presenting a high number of quality indicators for qualitative research. Ten themes were identified and grouped into three clusters: influencing factors (environment, school, parent and child factors); features of interaction (information, communication and collaboration); and quality levels of outcome (conflict, coping and construction of new roles and identities). Conclusions: Parents’ experiences are influenced by the quality of information, communication and collaboration between the school, health professionals and the family. Aims and objectives To explore nurses' views regarding implementing advance care planning for older people. Background Advance care planning is recommended as a way for older people to discuss their future care with family members and health professionals. Nurses play key roles in the process of advance care planning, including ensuring that patients are informed of their rights and that decisions are known to, and respected by, the health care team. Thus, understanding of nurses' experiences and perspectives regarding implementing advance care planning for older people is a significant topic for review. Design Qualitative meta-synthesis. Methods Four databases including CINAHL plus, Medline [ EBSCOhost], EMBASE, and Psyc INFO were searched, and 1844 articles were initially screened. Finally, 18 articles were critically appraised and a thematic synthesis was undertaken. Results Four themes were identified regarding implementation of advance care planning: perceived disadvantages and advantages of advance directives; nurses' responsibility and roles; facilitators and barriers; and nurses' needs and recommendations. Nurses felt that advance directives provided more advantages than disadvantages. Nurses generally believed that they were well positioned to engage in advance care planning conversations. Nurses perceived barriers relating to older people, families, environment, time, culture, cost, language and knowledge of health care teams with regard to advance care planning. In nurses' needs, education and support were highlighted. Conclusions This study provides useful knowledge for implementing advance care planning through illustrating nurses' experiences and perspectives. The results showed that nurses were more concerned about barriers in relation to working environment, teamwork, time and knowledge of health care team members than older people's characteristics, when implementing advance care planning. Relevance to clinical practice The findings provide nurses and administrators with information to develop related policies and education. Additionally, the appointment of nurses to formal roles related to advance care planning is appropriate and warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
