The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is one of the possible solutions to overcoming the non-programmability associated with these energy sources. The capabilities of BESSs to store a consistent amount of energy and to behave as a load by releasing it ensures an essential source of flexibility to the power system. Nevertheless, BESSs have some drawbacks that pose limitations to their utilization. Indeed, effectively managing the stored and released energy is crucial, considering the degradation of performance associated with these systems over time. The substantial capital expenditure (CAPEX) required to install these systems represents a current constraint, impeding their broader adoption. This work evaluates a techno-economic analysis of a 2MW/2MWh BESS providing multiple services, namely participating in capacity and balance markets. The analysis is based on a BESS model implemented in SIMULINK, adopting online data gathered from a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery facility. The model evaluates the auxiliary power consumption, state-of-charge (SoC), state of health (SoH), and the round-trip efficiency (RTE) of the overall system. The analysis is based on three price profiles: 2019 (Business-As-Usual), 2020 (COVID-19), and 2022 (Gas Crisis). Furthermore, this work conducts a case study to analyze the behavior of the BESS. It entails a sensitivity analysis, specifically evaluating the influence of CAPEX and upward bid price on the economic viability of the project. Background: Since 2003, the government of Ethiopia has trained and deployed more than 42,000 Health Extension Workers across the country to provide primary healthcare services. However, no research has assessed the return on investments into human resources for health in this setting. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing the return on investment within the context of the Ethiopian Health Extension Program. Methods: We collected data on associated costs and benefits attributed to the Health Extension Program from primary and secondary sources. Primary sources included patient exit interviews, surveys with Health Extension Workers and other health professionals, key informant interviews, and focus groups conducted in the following regions: Amhara, Oromia, Tigray, and the Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples' Region. Secondary sources consisted of financial and administrative reports gathered from the Ministry of Health and its subsidiaries, as well as data accessed through the Lives Saved Tool. A long-run return on investment analysis was conducted considering program costs (personnel, recurrent, and capital investments) in comparison to benefits gained through improved productivity, equity, empowerment, and employment. Findings: Between 2008–2017, Health Extension Workers saved 50,700 maternal and child lives. Much of the benefits were accrued by low income, less educated, and rural women who had limited access to services at higher level health centers and hospitals. Regional return ranged from $1.27 to $6.64, with an overall return on investment in the range of $1.59 to $3.71. Conclusion: While evidence of return on investments are limited, results from the Health Extension Program in Ethiopia show promise for similar large, sustainable system redesigns. However, this evidence needs to be contextualized and adapted in different settings to inform policy and practice. The Ethiopian Health Extension Program can serve as a model for other nations of a large-scale human resources for health program containing strong economic benefits and long-term sustainability through successful government integration. Despite regulators' allegations that digital technology giants misuse their market power to earn abnormal profits, there is a dearth of systematic work on (1) whether digital-tech firms in general, and tech giants in particular, earn excess profits or (2) whether their abnormal profitability, if any, is due to market power. We use two alternative measures of economic profitability in addition to accounting rate of return (ARR): internal rate of return (IRR), which equates current investments to their long-term payback, and return on invested capital (ROIC), whose numerator (profits) and denominator (invested capital) are adjusted for capitalized intangibles. Inferences based on IRRs differ from those based on ARRs and ROICs. IRRs show that the digital-tech sector is now the best-performing sector, and its gap between profitability and cost of capital has increased over time. The real rate of return to capital plays a vital part in the economy in evaluating the contribution of capital investment to the economic growth. As it is also a key variable in estimating the economic opportunity cost of capital for use as the economic discount rate in investment decision-making. The objective of this study is to estimate the economic real rates of return to reproducible and remunerative capital of the EAC economies. The results indicate that the real rates of return to reproducible capital over the period 1999–2016 have averaged 10.70% in Kenya and Rwanda, while it averaged 12.05% and 9.86% in Tanzania and Uganda, respectively. With regard to the marginal rates of return to remunerative capital, the results suggest that EAC countries have averaged 16.28%, 16.21%, 15.07% and 14.49% in Tanzania, Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda, respectively, over the same period. Background: Public–private partnerships (PPP) are often how health improvement programs are implemented in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs). We therefore aimed to systematically review the literature about the aim and impacts of quality improvement (QI) approaches in PPP in LMICs. Methods: We searched SCOPUS and grey literature for studies published before March 2022. One reviewer screened abstracts and full-text studies for inclusion. The study characteristics, setting, design, outcomes, and lessons learned were abstracted using a standard tool and reviewed in detail by a second author. Results: We identified 9,457 citations, of which 144 met the inclusion criteria and underwent full-text abstraction. We identified five key themes for successful QI projects in LMICs: 1) leadership support and alignment with overarching priorities, 2) local ownership and engagement of frontline teams, 3) shared authentic learning across teams, 4) resilience in managing external challenges, and 5) robust data and data visualization to track progress. We found great heterogeneity in QI tools, study designs, participants, and outcome measures. Most studies had diffuse aims and poor descriptions of the intervention components and their follow-up. Few papers formally reported on actual deployment of private-sector capital, and either provided insufficient information or did not follow the formal PPP model, which involves capital investment for a explicit return on investment. Few studies discussed the response to their findings and the organizational willingness to change. Conclusions: Many of the same factors that impact the success of QI in healthcare in high-income countries are relevant for PPP in LMICs. Vague descriptions of the structure and financial arrangements of the PPPs, and the roles of public and private entities made it difficult to draw meaningful conclusions about the impacts of the organizational governance on the outcomes of QI programs in LMICs. While we found many articles in the published literature on PPP-funded QI partnerships in LMICs, there is a dire need for research that more clearly describes the intervention details, implementation challenges, contextual factors, leadership and organizational structures. These details are needed to better align incentives to support the kinds of collaboration needed for guiding accountability in advancing global health. Return on investment (ROI) has long been accepted as a primary tool for decision‐making for capital investments and even choices among competing operational budget lines. Applying ROI to investments intended to prevent or mitigate future risks and hazards can be very difficult, as benefits are typically arduous to define and calculate while risk probabilities can be very small. This paper uses examples from recent research concerning law enforcement, airport security, and airport resiliency to illustrate the feasibility of computing ROI and resiliency ROI (RROI) for such investments and to suggest methodology to approach these computations. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the growing use of financial metrics (such as return on investment [ROI]) to measure performance and evaluate human capital (HC) investments. Design/methodology/approach: The research employed an embedded case study approach, examining how one ROI approach was applied to evaluating HC investments, across three sectors (corporate, public health and international development). Findings: Three major findings emerged in this study: First, interpretations of ROI can lead to ambiguity during implementation. ROI is interpreted trichotomously – metaphorically, as a desire for value; literally, as a metric; and procedurally, as a method for planning and evaluating HC investments. Second, understanding, measuring and tracking the domains of people performance (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) is vital to evaluating the impact of HC investments because this is where the change in behavior occurs. Third, although the logic model measures the change in process following an intervention (input-activity-output-outcome-impact), other approaches measure the change in behavior of people in the intervention (people performance). Practical implications: These findings provide clarity for practitioners about challenges when applying ROI. Originality/value: This is the first study to explore how the ROI financial metric is applied in a new domain by first examining its interpretation. In this study, a biorefinery concept is presented to produce valuable platform chemicals such as γ-valerolactone (GVL), 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) from lignocellulosic biomass via aqueous phase processing. Process simulation models are developed using Aspen Plus and a techno-economic assessment including cost estimation, energy integration, profitability study, sensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo simulation-based uncertainty analysis is carried out for evaluating the economic potential of the proposed process. The total investment for a plant with an annual production capacity of 35 kt of GVL, 17 kt of 2-MTHF and 5 kt of 5-HMF, is estimated as 257 M€. The minimum selling prices (MSPs) of GVL, 2-MTHF and 5-HMF are estimated to be 1.91 €/kg, 1.64 €/kg, and 1.93 €/kg, respectively. The profitability study revealed that the process generates an internal rate of return of 15.90%, making it viable and profitable. The sensitivity analysis indicated that the annual operational costs and fixed capital investment have the biggest influence on the minimum selling price of the products. Furthermore, based on the uncertainty analysis, the probability of loss is estimated as 17%. The prior literature links cash holdings and returns (Simutin (2010), Palazzo (2012)). Using two signals of aggregate-funding availability, I find that the positive association between cash and returns only exists during constrained funding environments. In unconstrained periods, there is no association between cash and returns. The relation in constrained environments does not appear to be related to capital expenditures, expected return, or distress risk but is more prevalent in firms undertaking research and development (R&D) expenditures. This suggests that the association between cash and returns is more consistent with expanding (or maintaining) future growth opportunities rather than being attributable to differences in capital expenditures or risk. The authors propose a new real estate investment class, moderate income rental housing (MIRH). Drawing on multifamily total return performance data from the National Council of Real Estate Fiduciaries (NCREIF), they classify multifamily properties as MIRH or above-MIRH according to whether they offer housing costs affordable to tenants earning less than 80% of median income. MIRH assets are found to offer comparable and favorable return and risk characteristics relative to above-MIRH assets and other investment alternatives. This basic finding is robust nationally, across 11 metros that provide sufficient data coverage, and across three vintage-year cohorts beginning in 2005, 2010, and 2015. Counterintuitively, MIRH assets typically exhibit slightly lower occupancy levels but higher capital expenditures and higher earnings yields over the analysis period (2005 to 2021). A new MIRH asset class aligns with rising interest in ESG investment, as it has posted compelling performance metrics while also providing an affordable rent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study aims to examine the value relevance of earnings in terms of predicting the value variables such as cash flow, capital investment (CI), dividend and stock return under the Indian institutional settings. Design/methodology/approach: The study used panel Granger causality tests to examine causality relationships among variables and panel data regression models to check the statistical associations between earnings and value variables. Findings: Based on a data set of 7,280 Bombay Stock Exchange-listed firm-years spanning over ten years from March 2009 to March 2018, the results show higher sensitivity of earnings toward cash flows, CI, divided and stock return and vice-versa. Further, the findings deduced from the empirical results demonstrate that earnings are positively related to value variables. Overall, the results established that earnings are value-relevant and have predictive ability to forecast the value variables that facilitate investors in portfolio valuation. The results are consistent with the predictive view of the value relevance of earnings. Several robustness checks confirm these results. Originality/value: This study brings new empirical evidence from a distinct capital market, India, and provides a new facet to the value relevance debate in terms of its prediction view. The study is among earlier attempts that jointly measure the ability of earnings in forecasting different value variables by taking a uniform sample of firms at the same period. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to deal with one of the technical difficulties of private and social cost–benefit analysis, i.e. the choice of the proper cost–benefit aggregation rule (or method) to use, when a private capital investment decision has to be taken or a public project appraisal has to be carried out. Design/methodology/approach: Although the considerable amount of existing literature, the problem of the choice of the right mathematical aggregation rule is still an open one. The majority of authors claim that net present value is a superior method and thus it is the one to be always used. Other authors try to show that various aggregation methods, under specific conditions, arrive at the same recommendation. An exceptional case is the field of education economics where the internal rate of return is widely used. Findings: This paper offers a survey of this controversial topic which focuses on some clear cut formal properties of the various aggregation methods and considers the empirical characteristics of the different fields of application. Its main conclusion is that no "correct" aggregation rule, always applicable in all decision frameworks, can exist. As we know, the increase in investments has a macroeconomic repercussion on the economies' growth, due to the multiplying effect on the increase in consumption and employment. A detailed treatment of aggregation and capital heterogeneity substantially improves the performance of the investment CAPM. Firm-level predicted returns are constructed from firm-level accounting variables and aggregated to the portfolio level to match with portfolio-level stock returns. Working capital forms a separate productive input besides physical capital. The model simultaneously fits the value, momentum, investment, and profitability premiums and partially explains positive stock-fundamental return correlations, the procyclical and short-term dynamics of the momentum and profitability premiums, and the countercyclical and long-term dynamics of the value and investment premiums. We investigate the relationship between firms' cash holdings and pandemics. Our results show that compared to tele‐workable firms, whose employees can work remotely, non‐tele‐workable firms with more on‐site employees increase cash during pandemics. This increase in cash comes from short‐debt, preferred stocks, reduction in capital expenditures, discontinuation of some operations and lower tax payments. Firms hold more cash as a reaction to higher default risk. For non‐tele‐workable firms, there is a positive relationship between abnormal stock returns and cash, suggesting that this increase in cash during pandemics is not driven by behavioral reasons but by increases in uncertainty in labor productivity. In this paper, we propose a new factor in predicting stock returns, after taking agency problems into account. Although intensive studies have focused on asset growth and profitability as factors in predicting future returns, very limited attention has been given to their interaction. We construct a measure that combines both asset growth and scaled gross profit in a single measure (defined as AGGP, hereafter), by excluding the change in capital expenditures from gross profit. We demonstrate that our measure of profitability controls for the agency problem from managerial decisions in investment. Our results are also robust to the scaling issues raised by recent studies. Further, consistent with prior literature, our measure produces superior results in the full universe of CRSP stocks, but inferior results when applied to a subset of the 500 largest nonfinancial firms. This is consistent with the fact that those largest firms are less affected by the agency problem, leading to the failure of our new measure in predicting future returns among this subsample. In sum, our new measure sheds new lights on how to price agency issues, by providing a "cleaner" profitability measure free of agency costs and also lending supportive evidence to the mispricing explanation of the asset-growth effect. This paper shows how the expected rate of return (ERR) on equity may be estimated using only published accounting results, based on the information dynamics of reported earnings. As accounting-based valuation models conditional upon financial statement articulation lead to a rank deficient system of estimating equations, the paper introduces a nonlinear constraint on the articulation that allows the information system simultaneously to produce an estimate for the ERR by iteration, together with predictions for the key clean surplus forecasts of net earnings, net dividend, and the book value of equity. Further decomposition produces estimates of expected capital gain, expected earnings, and the expected change in equity book value, and by rearrangement, the expected change in unrecorded goodwill. The clean surplus relation is maintained in the forecast variables. Exploratory data methods are used to examine the nonlinear relationship between components of the accounting-based ERR and realized stock returns. Findings show that realized returns are higher (lower) than estimated ERR in expansionary (recessionary) periods, with evidence of a stronger returns impact in recessionary periods. For the large majority of firms, realized returns revert to the estimated ERR, and the time-varying accounting components are strongly related to future realized stock returns, consistent with time variation in the ERR around a long-run average. We extend Easton's (2007) review of the literature on accounting-based estimates of the expected rate of return on equity capital, which we refer to as the ERR. We begin by reiterating the reasons why accounting-based estimates are used. Next, we briefly review the recent literature that focuses on improving forecasts of expected earnings by either (i) removing predictable errors from analysts' forecasts of earnings or (ii) developing cross-sectional regression-based estimates of earnings using prior-period financial data. In the remainder of our review we discuss a recent debate on methods for evaluating estimates of the ERR. The Engineering Economist is a journal that focuses on data-driven engineering economic models to support capital investment decisions in uncertain economic conditions. The aim of this study is to examine the importance of investment in human capital, methods for empirical assessment, challenges during the estimation as well as the main findings of the studies having dealt with this issue on the global scale. This study shows that empirical assessment of investment in human capital is mainly done by calculating the rate of return to schooling, which in most cases is realized through two methods: full discounting method and the Mincer's earnings equation. For some reasons, researchers have preferred to use more the second method, even though it has been criticized in several cases due to some assumptions made, especially for the fact that it considers schooling as exogenous, omitting the role of innate abilities. Many researchers have used different strategies to handle the issue of innate ability, however, there are still doubts whether these strategies improve the situation in assessing the rate of return to education. However, regardless of the methodology used, the study shows that investment in human capital plays an important role in increasing workers productivity, reducing poverty, reducing gender differentials and bringing a range of other personal and social benefits. We extract cost of capital measures for banks using analyst earnings forecasts, which we show are unbiased. We find that the cost of equity and the cost of debt decrease in the Tier 1 ratio, whereas total cost of capital is uncorrelated with the Tier 1 ratio. These findings suggest that investors adjust their return expectations for banks in accordance with the Modigliani–Miller conservation‐of‐risk principle. Hence, increased capital requirements are not made socially costly based on a notion that market pricing violates risk conservation. Undertaking a pharmacy education is an investment in human capital. Candidates trade off present versus future costs and benefits. They make this investment with the expectation of earning enough income throughout their worklives to make their undertaking financially worthwhile. Whether or not this occurs is determined by the rate of return. The aim of the current study was to construct a theoretical model to estimate the rate of return to a pharmacy education investment. Specifications for model assumptions, inputs, and outputs are discussed. The outputs are the rates of return, the inputs are the costs and benefits of a pharmacy education, and the assumptions illustrate the circumstances of the individual or group for whom the model is built. The rate of return is the annual percentage that equates the streams of benefits and costs over the investment span. The higher the value of the rate of return to a pharmacy education is, the more profitable is the investment. This theoretical model may be used to estimate the financial viability of pharmacy and compare it to the viability of other professions or to the viability of pharmacy among various locations. Solar drying is an energy‐efficient and eco‐friendly process, and it is extensively used in low‐temperature drying. In this paper, the year around performance and techno enviro‐economic assessments of a forced convection mixed‐mode solar dryer (MSD) are presented. The developed MSD has been tested throughout the year for the drying of various agricultural products such as jackfruit, red chili, turmeric, and ginger. The drying temperature of MSD was maintained 15–33°C higher than the ambient air temperature. The economic evaluation was done based on the net present worth, payback period, life cycle saving, and internal rate of return. The payback period was estimated as 0.9 years. The internal rate of return of 130% was obtained on the initial capital investment of the MSD. The effect of the embodied energies of the developed MSD on the environment was investigated based on equivalent thermal energy. The energy payback time (EPBT) of the developed dryer was 3.75 years, and the net CO2 mitigation potential over the life span of the dryer was 8.4 t. The developed MSD dries the agricultural products under hygienic conditions and provides economic viability to the potential users. Practical application: The developed mixed‐mode solar drying system is used for drying various agricultural products. The moisture content of the product is removed at a much faster rate compared to the traditional sun‐drying method. The performance test for various agricultural products dried during their harvesting season shows its efficient performance throughout the year. The main focus of this work is to analyze the techno and enviro‐economic of the designed mixed‐mode solar dryer. The economic analysis shows a higher internal rate of return for the various products dried over the life span of the dryer. Drying in the solar dryer will enhance product quality, reduce post‐harvest losses, carbon emission and establish economic feasibility, helping the farmers get a good return on their produce. Abstract Blue Growth is the creation of economic activity and jobs at sea, while multiple use of space makes efficient use of the available sea area by combining industries. Clearly there are many combinations and many value propositions. However, most technologies to date are considered blue sky concepts, with little robust techno-economic analysis demonstrating profitability. The paper begins by providing a comprehensive review of Blue Growth and multi-use in Blue Growth; both in policy as well as the wide range of current technologies, including ocean energy, offshore wind energy, offshore aquaculture and desalination. The Maribe H2020 project provides the vehicle for the research element of the paper. The major contribution is a new methodology for selecting, filtering, developing and ranking business propositions for multiple-use of space (MUS) and multi-use platforms (MUP). Application of the method for the first time identified three case studies where Blue Growth combination projects can be economically viable, with attractive internal rate of return (IRRs). Results presented for the case studies report standard investment metrics and show the relative contribution of each product (energy, food, water) to the system profitability, as well as socio-economic impact. Existing companies were fully engaged in the process. Co-creation between sector experts and industry led to both improved business value propositions and robust assessment of investment readiness. In contrast to the presumption that large scale platforms are commercially attractive, the highest ranking case study companies required smaller capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operated in niche subsectors. In conclusion, the positive economic performance of the case studies should provide confidence for the EC as well as investors that MUS and MUP have viable economic futures leading towards commercialisation. The macro and micro assessment methods will be particularly useful in other Blue Economy contexts and in other multiple product contexts. We study return predictability using a model of speculative trading among competitive traders who agree to disagree about the precision of private information. Although traders apply Bayes' Law consistently, returns are predictable. In addition to trading on long‐term fundamental value, traders also trade on perceived short‐term opportunities arising from foreseen future disagreement, as in a Keynesian beauty contest. Contradicting conventional wisdom, this short‐term speculation dampens price fluctuations and generates time‐series momentum. Model calibration shows quantitatively realistic patterns of return dynamics. Consistent with empirical evidence, our model predicts more pronounced momentum for stocks with higher trading volume. In this article, we combine narrative disclosures in the Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) Section of 10-K reports with financial variables to generate explicit firm-level forecasts of 1-year-ahead return on equity (ROE). Testing our forecasts out-of-sample, we find that models enhanced with MD&A disclosures are more accurate than models using quantitative financial variables alone. We also find that text-enhanced models are as good as or better than analyst consensus forecasts for small firms and firms with low analyst following. We provide evidence on the informativeness of the MD&A section across different firm characteristics. We find that firms with large changes in future performance, negative future performance, high investor scrutiny, high distress risk, high positive accruals, and high value relevance of earnings have more informative MD&A disclosures, whereas younger firms and firms facing greater market risk and litigation exposure have less informative MD&As. Our results are robust to alternative empirical choices regarding benchmarks and specifications. We propose a new multi-factor model for international stock returns that includes size, value, and momentum factor portfolios and that builds them in a partial-segmentation capital market framework. Accounting for externalities driven by the incomplete accessibility to stocks and stock markets, our model not only captures strong common variation in international stock returns but also achieves low pricing errors and rejection rates relative to pure segmentation and pure integration models. This partial-segmentation approach is evaluated using monthly returns for over 37,000 stocks from 46 developed and emerging market countries over 2 decades and for a wide variety of test assets. A promising feedstock for large‐scale production of sustainable jet biofuel is the inedible oilseed Brassica carinata (referred to simply as "carinata"), but transitioning to large‐scale fuel production entails significant economic uncertainty and requires substantial up‐front capital requirements for biorefinery construction. Furthermore, for carinata and other feedstocks attempting to compete within the established fossil jet fuel market, historically volatile aviation fuel prices affect the economic feasibility and return of biorefinery investments. In this study, we assess the impact of jet fuel price volatility on the return on investment in a carinata biorefinery employing a real options analysis (ROA). The key advantage of ROA over traditional net present value (NPV) analysis is that it simultaneously assesses the optimal timing for investments and the impact of jet fuel price dynamics on the likelihood of positive economic returns from investments in processing plants. Given the nonstationary nature of jet fuel prices and the presence of structural breaks, the price series are modeled as a geometric Brownian motion. Taking into account the volatility of jet fuel price, the ROA price threshold for a profitable investment is 45% greater than the NPV threshold. The ROA model identifies the necessary market conditions for a profitable investment and highlights the importance of considering market price dynamics before making substantial capital investments in a carinata biorefinery. The management of variables with uncertainties in stochastic cash flow models related to capital investments in energy crops projects allows, in addition to risk measurement, the adoption of proactive measures that can assure the generation of value to the project. This study analyzes the economic feasibility of sugarcane cultivation for bioethanol production from sugar cane molasses, under technical and economic uncertainty. The analysis characterizes sugarcane productivity, capital investment, production costs, and costs of cutting, loading, and transport, considered as stochastic variables. For this, the uncertainty was propagated through Latin hypercube sampling. Sensitivity analysis was also performed to assess the impact of these variables. The results indicated that the productivity of the crop and the sugarcane price in the conveyor belt are determinant to guarantee the economic value of the investment project. There is a high probability of achieving positive NPV (net present value), in addition, MIRR (modified internal rate of return) is 5% higher than MARR (minimum acceptable rate of return). Purpose - This study aims to use gray models to predict abnormal stock returns. Design/methodology/approach - Data are collected from listed companies in the Tehran Stock Exchange during 2005-2015. The analyses portray three models, namely, the gray model, the nonlinear gray Bernoulli model and the Nash nonlinear gray Bernoulli model. Findings - Results show that the Nash nonlinear gray Bernoulli model can predict abnormal stock returns that are defined by conditions other than gray models which predict increases, and then after checking regression models, the Bernoulli regression model is defined, which gives higher accuracy and fewer errors than the other two models. Originality/value - The stock market is one of the most important markets, which is influenced by several factors. Hexane extraction is the most common method used in the industry to produce soybean oil due to its high oil recovery and lower production cost. With the demands of soybean oil increasing either in food or industrial applications, expansion plans are considered by many companies to increase production capacity. Techno-economic analysis is performed to evaluate the economic feasibility of soybean oil production by hexane extraction based on historical scenarios from 1980 to 2015. Capital investment, operating costs, revenues, and profits are main parameters to consider when estimating profits, gross margin, return on investment (ROI), and payback time and are the indices used to evaluate the profitability of the process. As the plant capacity increases in scale to over 34.64 million kg of annual soybean oil production, the break-even is met and the producing stream is able to earn profits. Additionally, sensitivity analysis is also applied to examine which factor affects profit the most. In the hexane extraction process, material costs, especially for soybean prices, have the most significant effect on profit. Purpose: This paper aims to offer evidence-based findings on the under-researched role of finance in the sales and operations planning (S&OP) process, aiming to guide academics and practitioners towards successful S&OP implementations. Design/methodology/approach: The research builds upon a multiple case study, embracing five Latin American subsidiaries of four global manufacturing corporations from the consumer goods, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Following an exploratory approach, the case study results are analysed in within- and cross-case analyses. Findings: The research findings are synthesised into a framework, demonstrating relevant benefits from the engagement of finance along the S&OP process and the implications of its interactions with traditional S&OP functions as sales, marketing and operations. The paper shows how finance adds value in supporting the process, enabling decisions on costs, margins, capital expenditures and return on investments. Finance strengthens S&OP when assessing demand- and supply-related risks and facilitates comparing the functional business areas' plans to budget. While finance participation is highlighted as necessary for supporting successful S&OP implementations, it also receives valuable inputs in return, characterising a two-way communication role that benefits the entire organisation. Originality/value: This is the first research paper focusing on empirically exploring the role of finance within S&OP, going beyond initial insights from practice and academia. • Process design and energy analysis of IICLAS-based IGCC power and CLGH-based IGCC polygeneration plants are presented. • The capital cost of IICLAS and the expense of natural gas supply detracts the benefits of investing in an IICLAS-based IGCC power plant. • The commercial potential of the investment planning in an CLGH-based IGCC polygeneration plant is confirmed. • The minimum acceptable IRR for an CLGH-based IGCC polygeneration plant is about 14.1%. The techno-economic analysis of an IGCC power plant coupled with integrated intermittent chemical looping air separation (IICLAS) as Design 1 and an IGCC polygeneration plant integrated with chemical looping hydrogen generation (CLHG) as Design 2 are addressed. The economic evaluations show that (i) the total overnight cost of capital (TOCC) of Design 1 is higher than it of Design 2 by 3.6% and (ii) the total fixed and variable operation and maintenance cost (TOMC) of Design 1 is higher than it of Design 2 by 17.8%. These comparisons imply that the potential investment opportunities in Design 2 are more than Design 1. According to recent reports of the internal rate of return (IRR) for the coal-fired power plant investment around 8%∼12%, Design 2 guarantees the minimum acceptable IRR with 14.1% even though its revenue is reduced by 30%. For assessing the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) with 0.058USD/kWh and the dynamic payback period (DPP) with 6.6 years, these beneficial results raise the commercial potential of Design 2. In this study, techno-economic comparison of monocrystalline and concentrating photovoltaic power plants for the selected cities of Kerman province was carried out. After modeling the implied photovoltaic systems and validating the modeling results of the monocrystslline photovoltaic system with the measured data of an installed 5kW monocrystalline photovoltaic power plant at the Graduate University of Advanced Technology, daily and yearly electrical energies production analysis for both plants was presented. Then, the electrical efficiency and the performance factors, including capacity factor, final yield, reference yield and the performance ratio were determined. The economic analysis results showed that the northern cities of Kerman province had more favorable economic indicators, so internal rate of return, balanced cost of electricity, net present value, and benefit-cost ratio for the monocrystal photovoltaic plant were 21-22.1%, 13.3-13.9 dollars per kilowatt, 2-4.2 thousand dollars, and 1.04-1.09, respectively and for the concentrating photovoltaic plant were 24.9-28.6%, 8.8-10.2 dollars per kilowatt, 17.1-30.5 thousand dollars, and 1.24-1.43, respectively. Finally, a comprehensive comparison was made between the conventional PV systems and the CPV system for two scenarios: the same capital investment cost and the same nominal installed power. Results showed that at both scenarios, the concentrating photovoltaic is superior to the monocrystalline PV plant, in a way that Kerman and Jiroft cities, as the best cities, had the net present value of 30.5 thousand dollars and 21 thousand dollars, respectively. Does the rate of return from the Chinese real estate industry correlate with the intensity of competition among real estate firms? If China’s equity market performs efficiently, the rates of return of real estate firms should vary indirectly with their level of monopoly power. Greater monopoly power reduces earnings risk and leads to lower costs of capital. The authors analyze empirical evidence and indicate no relationship exists between returns and competition. Commercial real estate investors prefer coastal, gateway, markets for liquidity, demand density, and durable returns. Yet, these areas are more vulnerable to the effects of climate change from more intense and frequent weather events such as hurricanes and typhoons as well as to gradual changes such as sea-level rise. Recognition is growing of the risks that these events pose to investment performance, but little is known about how this risk has impacted property values and returns when an event such as a hurricane occurs. This is the first study to analyze the impact on property values and returns from hurricanes causing the most significant damage by value over the past 30-plus years throughout the nation. Using individual property data from the National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries database, we find a significant impact on the value and rates of return, after accounting for any additional capital expenditures for repairs, for properties that are in areas impacted by a hurricane, relative to areas that were not impacted by a hurricane. Capital budgeting is the process of evaluating and selecting long-term investments that are consistent with the goal of the firm. Capital expenditure decision affects the company's future cost structure over a long-time span. The investment in fixed assets increases the fixed cost of the firm, which must be recovered from the benefit of the same project. If the investment turns out to be unsuccessful in future or gives less profit than expected, the company will have to bear the extra burden of fixed costs. Such risk can be minimized through the systematic analysis of projects, which is an integral part of investment decisions. Capital investment decisions are not easily reversible without much financial loss to the firm because there may be no market for second-hand plants and equipment and their conversion to other uses may not be financially viable. The 20-25 years economic life for hydrocarbon pipelines in the investment decision model is at wide variance with historical statistical records of more than 90-percent world-wide. Opinions diverge, from service type to the product quality, and materials resilience as basis for this premise. While, financial experts consider time to fully depreciate a capital investment, irrespective of the rate of returns, engineers consider operational availability and reliability duration. The risk is that actual residue values of pipelines worldwide are erroneously omitted in every project's economics Cash-flow computation, thus eroding the investment decision quality. Statistics showed that more than 60-percent of pipelines worldwide have already exceeded the 25 years economic life, while more than 40-percent have operated more than 30-years and above. This theoretical appraisal identified a gap in the economic model in handling multi-criteria risk management uncertainties like hedging, weighting, etc., and highlighted the exigency to craft and assign numeric residue values for pipelines in the investment Cash-flow models. It is common to use the average excess return of equities over bonds estimated over long time periods as an expected equity risk premium on the grounds that going back far enough covers most possible economic scenarios. But although this data is useful in guiding the exercise of judgment, it cannot substitute for judgment. Adding more years of data to the near century of Canadian stock and bond returns that inform today's estimate of the equity risk premium will not produce a "random walk" for a simple reason: the historic bond series is the result of a specific historic monetary policy. This is particularly true of and important for the case of Canada, where today's very low current bond yields reflect the emergence of the Canadian dollar as a reserve currency as well as the impact of unconventional monetary policy elsewhere. After analyzing the historic record of the Canadian equity risk premium and noting the need for adjustments when this premium is applied to the current anomalously low Canadian long‐term bond yields, the author reaches the following conclusions: The historic Canadian equity risk premium is approximately 5.0% (based on arithmetic returns), which is slightly lower than the roughly 6.0% value for the U.S.The historic equity risk premium has not been constant because of obvious changes in the Canadian bond market. To some extent, the huge cycle in which bond yields began their increase from the 4.0% level starting in 1957, when markets were liberalized, and then fell back to the 4.0% level in 2007‐2008 completed an adjustment to changes in fiscal versus monetary policy. However, in 2016, average long Canada bond yields dropped to an anomalously low 1.8%, which is below the long‐term inflation target of the Bank of Canada, and have barely recovered since. It is difficult to view this as an equilibrium rate determined by private investors.Of the drop in bond yields, about 0.50% is unique to Government of Canada bonds as they became attractive to sovereign investors as a rare AAA‐rated issuer.Using an indicator variable for the post‐2010 years, a simple regression analysis indicates that current long Canada bond yields should be about 2.75% higher but for the recent changes. And for 2018, this means that the 2.35% average long Canada bond yield should have been about 5.0%. Apart from the impact of higher government deficits, this is consistent with average yields before the 2008 financial crisis.Adding an adjusted 5.0% long Canada bond yield to the historic equity risk premium in Canada of 4.50% gives 9.50% for the cost of the overall equity market or, given the Bank of Canada's target inflation rate of 2.0%, a real equity return of 7.5%, both slightly higher than the long‐run averages. In sum, the conventional practice of adding a historic market risk premium to the current low Canada long bond yields would impart a sharp downward bias to current equity cost estimates; use of this method would not be appropriate until long Canada bond yields increase to at least the 4.0% level. The last 30 years have witnessed a dramatic change in the distribution of income, with the wage share falling in all major industrialized countries. Main-stream analyses, including New Keynesian ones, which retain the notion of factor substitution leading to a “factor intensity” inversely related to its rate of return, have encountered some difficulties in the interpretation of this change. Nonmainstream approaches present an advantage in the explanation of the phenomenon, consisting in the fact that they entail no a priori connections between the changes in distribution and the changes factor proportions. Hence if a change in institutions or in the bargaining strength of the parties affects distribution, income shares may vary significantly (i.e., changes in wages need not be accompanied by changes in labor to output ratio in the opposite direction as in mainstream analyses). Yet empirical observation may question also some of the analyses that have been advanced outside the mainstream. The article will explore the ways in which nonmainstream approaches have interpreted the described changes in distribution, and assess them from an analytical viewpoint and with reference to U.S. data. This paper develops a framework in which asset class dimensions are extended to include both risk and exhaustibility for explaining the evolution of shadow prices of marginal units of exhaustible natural resources in capital-resource economies. It is shown that the pricing kernel function required for socially valuing marginal units of exhaustible resource, hereafter called the Exhaustion-Stochastic Discount Factor, combines a factor that discounts for risk and another factor that discounts for resource exhaustion over time. The social rate of return on the marginal unit of resource stock adds to the risk-premium an exhaustion premium that accounts for the resource depletion over time. In this setting, the principle of no-arbitrage holds by extending asset-class dimensions to include not only a risk dimension but also an exhaustibility dimension. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the performed and presented financial analyzes, in the case of the two units, does not allow major discrepancies between the estimated and achieved situation. The authors have based the research on the technical-economic and financial analysis of investments, which sets economic efficiency and investments viability and assumes forecast of revenue, expenses, profit and loss account, balance sheet and cash flow: a) static analysis of indicators; b) dynamic analysis of indicators, c) cost-benefit analysis. Analysis of economic efficiency and sustainability of investments aimes at both static indicators of investment analysis and dynamic analysis of economic efficiency. The goal of research was to improve analyzes and economic indicators for assessing the effectiveness and sustainability of investments and the objectives targeted technical and economic analysis, solvency and viability of investments and the impact of the investment on key indicators of economic and financial technical analysis. Case studies, carried out at S.C. NORD INTERMED CONSULTING GROUP S.R.L. Dorneşti, Suceava county and S.C. ANDIMIR TOP S.R.L. Study showed that 0.5 g (g/100 g PMS) of alkali and 10 g/L of biochar was the optimised dosing. Statistically, contribution of biochar and alkali was 48 and 21% respectively on the multiple output. The confirmation test revealed that hydrolysis rate constant, k and total volatile fatty acid/alkalinity ratio for reactor having optimised conditions was 0.0521 d-1 and 0.36 while for control, it was 0.0595 d-1 and 0.76 respectively. Techno-economic assessment showed US$ 25,652 of net present value and 11.29% of internal rate of return. Unlike other investment decision techniques, Modified Internal Rate of Return (MIRR) has yielded mixed academic opinions. MIRR is sometimes heralded as a superior decision rule, sometimes seen as having little value, and sometimes ignored altogether. We offer an alternative view; that the value of MIRR lays in improving students' understanding of net present value (NPV) as the primary decision criteria for investment decisions. Purpose: This study investigates the effect of investment in intellectual capital and its components on the performance of Brazilian companies listed on the Brasil, Bolsa, Balcão (B3) exchange. More specifically, we examine whether a positive relationship exists between the proxies for intellectual, structural, human, and invested capital and firms' return on assets and equity. Originality/value: This study differs from those of Richieri (2007), Turra et al. (2015), and Brizolla and Turra (2015) by using panel data and static and dynamic econometric regression models to analyze firms' performance. It also differs from Nadeem et al. (2018) by using return on equity and return on assets to measure performance. Design/methodology/approach: We estimated two equations employing static estimators (static OLS and fixed effect) and dynamic estimators (dynamic OLS and GMM), as proposed by Nadeem et al. (2018). We performed strict exogeneity tests to ascertain the need to use dynamic models. Thus, the first equation analyzed the effect of intellectual capital on future performance (measured by ROA and ROE). In contrast, the second equation investigated the impact of structural, invested, and human capital on these same performance indicators. Findings: The results indicate a positive effect of investment in intellectual capital on the performance of Brazilian companies.
