Two key challenges in optimal control include efficiently solving high-dimensional problems and handling optimal control problems with state-dependent running costs. In this paper, we consider a class of optimal control problems whose running costs consist of a quadratic on the control variable and a convex, non-negative, piecewise affine function on the state variable. We provide the analytical solution for this class of optimal control problems as well as a Hopf-type representation formula for the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi partial differential equations. Finally, we propose efficient numerical algorithms based on our Hopf-type representation formula, convex optimization algorithms, and min-plus techniques. We present several high-dimensional numerical examples, which demonstrate that our algorithms overcome the curse of dimensionality. We also describe a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation of our numerical solver whose latency scales linearly in the spatial dimension and that achieves approximately a 40 times speedup compared to a parallelized central processing unit (CPU) implementation. Thus, our numerical results demonstrate the promising performance boosts that FPGAs are able to achieve over CPUs. Achieving precision in the prediction of buildings' dynamic heat load is crucial for the advancement of smart heating systems. This research highlights the urgent need to enhance the accuracy of models predicting dynamic heat load. Through literature review, distinguished machine learning and regression algorithms were chosen to formulate prediction models. These models employ a data time-step adaptive strategy, a physics-guided loss function, and fundamental principles of heat transfer. Optimization algorithms of a mathematical nature were utilized to fine-tune the parameters and the framework of long short-term memory (LSTM) and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) models. An analytical comparison was undertaken between physics-guided models and those not guided by physics. Principal conclusions are: 1) Pelican optimization algorithm (POA)-LSTM model emerges as superior in heat load prediction accuracy of an office building, with percentage errors for actual and simulated datasets ranging from −6.7 % to 5.8 % and −5.2 %–4.5 %, respectively, and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) standing at 2.3 % and 1.3 %. 2) The linear regression model exhibits the lowest precision, with a MAPE of 17.5 % and 4.0 % for the 7-day prediction results in the actual and simulated datasets, respectively. The electric power distribution system (PDS) and the water distribution system (WDS) are coupled with each other through electricity-driven water facilities (EdWFs), such as pumps, water desalination plants, and wastewater treatment facilities. However, they are generally owned and operated by different utilities, and there does not exist an operator that possesses full information of both systems. As a result, centralized methods are not applicable for coordinating the operation of the two systems. This paper proposes a decentralized framework where the PDS and WDS operators solve their own operation problems, respectively, by sharing only limited information. Nevertheless, the boundary variables (i.e., the variables shared between two systems) are discontinuous due to their dependence on the on/off nature of EdWFs. Unfortunately, mature decentralized/distributed optimization algorithms like the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) cannot guarantee convergence and optimality for a case like this. Therefore, this paper develops a novel algorithm that can guarantee convergence and optimality for the decentralized optimization of PDS and WDS based on a recently developed algorithm called the SD-GS-AL method. The SD-GS-AL method is a combination of the simplicial decomposition (SD), gauss–seidel (GS), and augmented Lagrangian (AL) methods, which can guarantee convergence and optimality for mixed-integer programs (MIPs) with continuous boundary variables. Nonetheless, the original SD-GS-AL algorithm does not work for the PDS-WDS coordination problem where the boundary variables are discontinuous. This paper modifies and improves the original SD-GS-AL algorithm by introducing update rules to discontinuous boundary variables (called the Auxiliary Variables Update step). The proposed mixed-integer boundary compatible (MIBC) SD-GS-AL algorithm has the following benefits: (1) it is capable of handling cases whose boundary variables are discontinuous with convergence and optimality guaranteed for mild assumptions, and (2) it only requires limited information exchange between PDS and WDS operators, which will help preserve the privacy of the two utilities and reduce the investment in building additional communication channels. Simulations on two coupled PDS and WDS test cases (Case 1: IEEE-13 node PDS and 11-node WDS, and Case 2: IEEE-37 node PDS and 36-node WDS) show that the proposed MIBC algorithm converges to the optimal solutions while the original SD-GS-AL does not converge for both test cases. Many-objective optimization problems (MaOPs) are challenging tasks involving optimizing many conflicting objectives simultaneously. Decomposition-based many-objective evolutionary algorithms have effectively maintained a balance between convergence and diversity in recent years. However, these algorithms face challenges in accurately approximating the complex geometric structure of irregular Pareto fronts (PFs). In this paper, an information entropy-driven evolutionary algorithm based on reinforcement learning (RL-RVEA) for many-objective optimization with irregular Pareto fronts is proposed. The proposed algorithm leverages reinforcement learning to guide the evolution process by interacting with the environment to learn the shape and features of PF, which adaptively adjusts the distribution of reference vectors to cover the PFs structure effectively. Moreover, an information entropy-driven adaptive scalarization approach is designed in this paper to reflect the diversity of nondominated solutions, which facilitates the algorithm to balance multiple competing objectives adaptively and select solutions efficiently while maintaining individual diversity. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, the RL-RVEA compared with seven state-of-the-art algorithms on the DTLZ, MaF, and WFG test suites and four real-world MaOPs. This paper introduces an improved differential evolution algorithm based on cooperative multi-population (CMp-DE for short), which combines diverse population collaboration mechanisms and catalytic factors into an improved differential evolution framework. By harnessing various population collaboration mechanisms, the algorithm enhances the diversity of individuals within populations during initial iterations and reduces it during later iterations, thereby harmonizing the algorithm's exploratory and exploitative capabilities. Furthermore, a novel mutation operator is proposed that divides the iterative process into exploration and exploitation phases, thereby augmenting the algorithm's global exploration prowess. Lastly, a catalytic operator is introduced to generate new individuals near post-crossover individuals based on a specified rule, which enhances the algorithm's ability to escape local optima and increasing stability. The proposed CMp-DE is benchmarked against the CEC2017 benchmark test functions and compared against 13 algorithms, including five differential evolution algorithms and their variants, as well as eight state-of-the-art metaheuristic optimization algorithms. In this paper, a multi-operator differential evolution algorithm (MODE) is proposed to solve the Optimal Power Flow problem, called MODE-OPF. The MODE-OPF utilizes the strengths of more than one differential evolution operator in a single algorithmic framework. Additionally, an adaptive method is proposed to update the number of solutions evolved by each DE operator based on both the diversity of the population and the quality of solutions. This adaptive method has the ability to maintain diversity at the early stages of the optimization process and boost convergence at the later ones. The performance of the proposed MODE-OPF is tested by solving OPF problems for both small and large IEEE bus systems (i.e., IEEE-30 and IEEE-118) while considering intermittent solar and wind power generation. To prove the suitability of this proposed algorithm, its performance has been compared against several state-of-the-art optimization algorithms, where MODE-OPF outperforms other algorithms in all experimental results thereby improving a network's performance with lower cost. This paper introduces a novel surrogate-assisted multi-objective nutcracker optimization algorithm. This algorithm is built upon the recently proposed nutcracker optimization algorithm, drawing inspiration from the behaviours observed in Clark's nutcrackers. The algorithm is developed based on two distinct behaviours exhibited by these birds. To comprehensively evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, a dual-pronged approach is adopted. On the one hand, a set of artificial test problems is employed to scrutinize the algorithm's capabilities, while on the other hand, a set of real-world problems is considered to assess its practical efficacy. The results of the proposed algorithm are evaluated in comparison to existing baseline algorithms and state-of-the-art algorithms, using well-recognized performance metrics, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Combinatorial optimization problems (COPs) play an important role in both industrial production and theoretical research. As a classical class of optimization algorithms, evolutionary algorithms have shown good performance in COPs. However, as the size of the problem increases, it becomes difficult for evolutionary algorithms to produce satisfactory solutions within the specified time. In recent years, neural network algorithms have been applied to solve COPs and have shown superior effects. Inspired by this, this paper proposes a new algorithm based on graph structure for solving COPs. Through relaxation, COPs are transformed into their corresponding continuous optimization problems. The output state of our algorithm is converted to a discrete solution by approximation method. Compared with previous algorithms, our algorithm can not only solve COPs with general form such as binary quadratic programming (BQP), but also solve COPs with special form, which greatly expands the application scope of neural network algorithms. In addition, our algorithm can be embedded into other problem frameworks such as solving multi-objective combinatorial optimization problem (MOCOP) through scalarization method. A new penalty function is added to the objective function, which enables our algorithm to overcome the inconsistency between the optimal solution of the original problem and the corresponding continuous problem, so that our algorithm can perform well on various problems. Several numerical simulations are used to illustrate the effectiveness of our algorithm in solving COPs. The smooth execution of tasks in the cloud manufacturing (CMfg) process can be significantly affected by various real-world uncertainties, resulting in inefficiencies or even failures of the composite manufacturing service (CMS). Nevertheless, current research primarily concentrates on post-exception emergency handling methods, heavily dependent on the planned CMS and real-time status of manufacturing resources, often leading to suboptimal temporary adjustments or even the inability to find a viable solution. Hence, there is an urgent necessity to enhance the robustness of the planned CMS during the service composition and optimal selection (SCOS) phase. In pursuit of this goal, the paper initially presents an adaptive robust service composition and optimization selection (ARSCOS) model. This model dynamically determines whether to await exception resolution or invoke an alternative service, considering the circumstances when a service exception arises and employing task delay time to characterize the robustness of a specific CMS. Subsequently, an enhanced multi-objective artificial hummingbird algorithm (EMOAHA) is devised for this model. Finally, the efficacy of EMOAHA is demonstrated by applying it to nine different scales of civilian unmanned aerial vehicle manufacturing SCOS problems and 17 benchmark functions. In this paper, a novel population robustness-based switching response framework (PR-SRF) is proposed to develop effective dynamic multi-objective optimization algorithm (DMOA), which integrates different response strategies to comprehensively cope with the dynamic behaviors. In particular, the population robustness is described by the quantification of how severely the environmental changes affect current population, which is timely graded as three levels of weak, strong, and normal to enable the adaptive switch of three different responses of diversity-enhancement, diversity-maintenance, and the knowledge-transfer, respectively. In this way, associations between the adopted responses and the changing environments are successfully established, thereby facilitating more intelligent decision when handling the dynamic behaviors. According to the benchmark evaluation results, the proposed PR-SRF-DMOA yields better comprehensive performance than several other DMOAs with popular response strategies, and it also outperforms another three DMOAs with hybrid responses, which demonstrates the great competitiveness of our algorithm. In addition, ablation study proves that the proposed PR-SRF can sufficiently exploit the merits of different responses, which effectively alleviates the negative knowledge transfer in extremely fluctuating environments, thereby providing valuable references for the development of evolutionary transfer optimization (ETO) algorithms. Today, image segmentation methods are widely used for various applications, including object detection. Multilevel Thresholding Image Segmentation (MTIS) methods are among the efficient methods for image segmentation. In MTIS methods, it is very important to find the thresholds that gives the best performance for the MTIS and better separate and detect the objects on the image from the image background. Meta-Heuristic (MH) algorithms are among the strategies that can achieve good results in obtaining optimal thresholds to solve this problem. In this paper, we use the combination of Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA) and Harris Hawks Optimizer (HHO) to improve AOA in exploitation phase, and achieve an optimal threshold vector for MTIS. Therefore, our new hybrid AOA-HHO algorithm solves the MTIS problem with better quality than both AOA and HHO algorithms and some other MH algorithms, and can obtain better thresholds that increase the performance of the MTIS system than AOA and HHO. AOA is powerful in the exploration, and HHO in exploitation phase is powerful. Therefore, AOA-HHO uses the features of both algorithms to search the entire search space locally and globally to find the best find the solution, the high power of the AOA exploration phase, and the high power of the HHO exploitation phase. Also, we use a mathematical equation as the fitness function, that is obtained by using image features. A series of experiments were performed using seven different threshold levels on the test images. Experiments show that AOA-HHO method is better than the compared algorithms and even HHO and AOA in terms of image segmentation accuracy, fitness function value, Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM), and execution time. Artificial rabbits optimization (ARO) is a swarm intelligence-based algorithm inspired by the survival strategies of rabbits. Although ARO has a good convergence rate, it is prone to get stuck in the local optima and converge prematurely. To overcome this, the present paper redesigns the exploration operator of the ARO algorithm with the roulette fitness-distance balance (RFDB) and dynamic fitness-distance balance (d FDB) strategies. In this context, three different versions of the fitness-distance balance-based artificial rabbits optimization (FDBARO) algorithm are developed. The performance of the original ARO and FDBARO versions (FDBARO-1, FDBARO-2, and FDBARO-3) are evaluated on CEC 2017 and CEC 2020 benchmark functions. The obtained results are analyzed with the Wilcoxon and Friedman statistical tests. Statistical and convergence analysis results showed that the FDBARO-3 algorithm designed with the d FDB selection method can explore the search space more successfully compared to other algorithms. This version was named the dynamic FDBARO (d FDBARO) algorithm. Moreover, the practicability of the proposed d FDBARO is highlighted by the solution of the optimal power flow (OPF) problem formulated with renewable energy sources (RESs) and flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) devices considering fixed and uncertain load demands. Stochastic optimization (SO) algorithms based on the Powerball function, namely powered stochastic optimization (PoweredSO) algorithms, have been confirmed, effectively, and demonstrated great potential in the context of large-scale optimization and machine learning tasks. Nevertheless, the issue of how to determine the learning rate for PoweredSO is a challenge and still unsolved problem. In this paper, we propose a class of adaptive PoweredSO approaches that are efficient, scalable and robust. It takes advantage of the hypergradient descent (HD) technique to automatically acquire an online learning rate for PoweredSO-like methods. In the first part, we study the behavior of the canonical PoweredSO algorithm, the Powerball stochastic gradient descent (pbSGD) method, with HD. The existing PoweredSO algorithms also suffer from the high variance because they take the similar algorithmic framework to SO algorithms, arising from sampling tactics. Therefore, the second portion develops an adaptive powered variance-reduced optimization method via utilizing both variance-reduced technique and HD. Moreover, we present the convergence analysis of the proposed algorithms and explore their iteration complexity on non-convex cases. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese hospitals are increasing their efforts to control the number of patients to decrease cross-infection risks. In this paper, we investigate the flexible physician scheduling problem for emergency departments (EDs), considering the constraint of the maximum number of emergency patients in one time period. We model the ED service system as a time-varying queue with returns and formulate the physician scheduling problem as a mixed-integer programming model. To solve the scheduling problem effectively, we design a learning-based two-stage optimization algorithm. In the first stage, we solve the physician staffing problem, in which two effective acceleration strategies based on machine learning models are developed. In the second stage, we propose a branch-and-price algorithm to determine the physician scheduling plan. Numerical experiments based on real-life data show that the proposed two-stage algorithm can effectively solve our flexible physician scheduling problem, and the scheduling plan obtained by the proposed two-stage algorithm can significantly improve the physician schedule without involving more physicians. In this paper, a trust region optimization algorithm integrated with a co-kriging surrogate-model is newly formulated to optimize compact ultrathin wideband metamaterial absorbers with high absorption. The reported algorithm is linked with the full vectorial finite element method to simulate and optimize the studied absorbers. In order to show the power of the suggested algorithm, the geometrical parameters of a previous metamaterial absorber (MA) with L-shaped resonators are optimized to achieve high absorption (over 90 %) over a frequency band from 13.8 GHz to 24.5 GHz covering most of KU and K bands. Then, a novel design of L-shaped MA with triangular resonators is optimized, analyzed and fabricated with high absorption (above 90 %) through a large frequency band from 11.9 GHz to 22 GHz covering the entire KU-band and most of the K-band. The reported design is also robust against the variations of the incident angle (above 80 % up to 50 °) for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarized modes. The collaborative optimization dispatching of multiple energy flows plays a crucial role in achieving the economic and efficient low-carbon operation of integrated energy systems (IESs). However, the dispatching problem for IESs is characterized by high dimensionality, non-linearity, and complex coupling. Furthermore, the integration of renewable energy sources and flexible loads has transformed the IES into a complex dynamic system with significant uncertainty. Traditional intelligent optimization algorithms exhibit poor adaptability and lengthy solution computation time when tackling such problems. In contrast, deep reinforcement learning (DRL), as an interactive trial-and-error learning method, has shown improved decision-making capabilities. In view of this, a data-driven soft actor-critic (SAC) deep reinforcement learning-based approach is proposed in this paper for interval optimal dispatch of IESs considering multiple uncertainties. First, the basic principle of SAC reinforcement learning is introduced in detail, and the basic framework of reinforcement learning for interval optimal scheduling of IESs is constructed. Then, the environment model of agent interaction is constructed, and the action and state space of DRL, as well as the reward mechanism and neural network structure, are designed. Finally, a typical IES case is experimentally analyzed and compared with three popular DRL algorithms and five state-of-the-art intelligent optimization algorithms.
