The purpose of this study is to evaluate publication output and citation impact in the social sciences in Malaysia, based on Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) data, for the period 1999–2008. In addition to the analysis of trends in publication and citation patterns and national publication profiles, an attempt is made to explore the strengths and weakness of different fields, using a new mathematical index, the scientific power index (PI). The findings indicate that publication output in the social sciences has been on the increase since 1999. Mostpapers have been published in median-impact-factor journals (mean impact factor of 2.72 per paper). Internationally co-authored publications represented 77 per cent of all citations. Most of the prolific authors are from the highly productive institutions; however, none of highly cited first authors are from highly productive institutions. Publishers of academic books in Australia have evolved in response to the crisis in scholarly publishing by adapting to the opportunities afforded by digital technologies for faster, cheaper, and more dynamic publishing approaches. Academic authors are at the core of the scholarly publishing landscape, so publishers need to understand their motives and needs. This paper examines data from a survey of academic authors in the humanities and social sciences (HSS) in Australia. Our aim for the survey was to understand the publishing experiences, behaviours, and perceptions of these authors. We discovered their expectations for publishers are high. They want fast turnaround, high-quality editing and production values, and cheaper books, which run up against three principal constraints for all scholarly publishers: quality, time, and cost. The prestige and reputation of a publisher are critical, and authors are primarily interested in traditional success measures of academic performance. Societal impact or engagement with research end-users was seen as less important. The findings of this project highlight a number of contradictions and tensions within the scholarly publishing landscape, and they have tangible implications for practices in HSS for authors and publishers, as well as for grant funders and university administrators who adopt policies and assign criteria for research evaluation. International scholarly publishing is a multifaceted and interconnected activity around the globe. This paper critically examines the linguistic facet of scholarly publication as a global phenomenon. We investigated the distribution of languages in the Social Sciences Citation Index and the Arts and Humanities Citation Index lists to determine Chinese humanities and social sciences scholars' choice of language as recorded in the Web of Science when publishing in selected disciplines. Covering a ten-year period from 2005 to 2014, the findings show that English was by far the most preferred language. Although other languages have a presence in the two key lists, Asian languages were conspicuously absent. Chinese scholars' language preferences have been almost exclusively confined to English and Chinese, and they have limited multilingual abilities for scholarly publication. To learn about the current situation of open access (OA) in Chinese social science journals, 714 journals listed in the Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI) in 2012 to 2013 were chosen to investigate, and search engines were used to analyze the OA status of these journals and their articles. The results showed that 13.73 per cent of journals in the CSSCI are OA, their OA format is mostly PDF, and 84.69 per cent of their OA resources are gathered from the publishing years 2004 to 2012. The level of OA journals focusing on different subjects is unbalanced in China. Articles from each journal published in 2007 were selected according to different standards to study the relationship of OA and citation. The results showed that the OA level of highly cited articles is higher than that of low- and non-cited articles. Factors that may restrict OA development in China were analyzed. A conference paper reflecting on the legislative bill for a secularism charter in Québec initiated by the political party Parti Québécois (PQ) is presented. It offers four reasons speaking against the need for such as charter. Further discussions include political philosophy, the separation between the State and the Catholic Church, the PQ's argument for such a charter, the concern over a hierarchy of fundamental rights, and the wearing of religious symbols by public employees.

A conference paper on the political and legal aspects of laicism in Québec and France is presented. It defines the concept of laicism, comments on the separation of Church and State, and discusses the fear of communitarianism, the erosion of common values, and the threat to democracy. Additional topics include liberty of conscience and equality, reasonable accommodation and State neutrality, and the contributions of religions to social tolerance.

A conference paper on pluralism from an intercultural epistemology perspective is presented. It discusses the problem with moral pluralism and the relationship between moral pluralism and cultural pluralism and presents several arguments in favor of cultural pluralism including the recognition, ontology, and utility of plurality. The four conditions to establish an intercultural epistemology including perspectivism, relativity of the truth, and epistemological and axiological agnosticism are also mentioned.

A conference paper analyzing the history of the relationship between families and politics in Québec is presented. It discusses the six types of family structures according to French demographer Emmanuel Todd, including the egalitarian nuclear family, and the British Empire's differentialist colonial philosophy compared to the French Empire's universalist and assimilation philosophy. The political differences between Québec's Montréal and Québec regions are also noted.

A conference paper on the evolution of laicism in Québec from 1760 to circa 2012 and the teaching of laicism in Québec's public schools is presented. It discusses Québec's transition from a clerical to a secular historiography after 1947 and the influence of the Catholic Church. Further topics include the founding of the Mouvement laïque de langue française (MLF), or the French language secularism movement, in April 1961, the emancipation of women, and the involvement of the Québec government.

A conference paper comparing liberal multiculturalism and republican multiculturalism is presented. It comments on pluralism and multiculturalism and presents liberal, republican, and communitarian criticisms on multiculturalism. The interculturalist model in the Bouchard-Taylor report, which was written by Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor and sociologist Gérard Bouchard in 2008 and concerns reasonable accommodations with regard to cultural differences in Québec is also discussed.

As an academic vehicle, social science journals undoubtedly play an important role in cultural communication. And with the development of research in the humanities and social sciences in China, universities’ social science journals have also undergone rapid development; there are still problems, however, including limited regional authorship, lack of individuality, small circulation, and a tendency toward pan-politicization, that hinder the further development of our journals. The article discusses solutions to these problems, including strict peer review, an emphasis on journals’ individuality, a strengthening of journals’ market awareness, and the expediting of internationalization. This paper investigates the possibility of community under modern conditions of "worldlessness," displacement, and disburdenment, conditions recently materialized in, and accelerated by, digital information and communication technologies. The paper engineers an encounter between two literatures: the body of philosophical writing that locates the phenomenon of worldlessness in the progress of modern technology generally; and the growing social science literature examining the character and dynamics of digitallymediated community practices and forms. The paper begins with a theoretical exegesis of aspects of the work of three thinkers—Harold Innis, Hannah Arendt, and Albert Borgmann—who have made thoughtful contributions to our understand of the technological phenomenon gathered here as worldlessness. It then proceeds to reflect upon recent empirical accounts of digitally-mediated community, in light of the philosophical questions raised by these thinkers. The paper concludes by arguing that digital technology, as it is elaborated in the context of contemporary liberal capitalism, provides a material setting in which community is likely to thrive only in a particular, truncated form: as an infrastructure of convenience for instrumental communication between networked individuals. Demonstrating research activity and a productive publishing record is crucial for landing a tenure-track position after graduation. What does it mean, however, to be productive in publishing? How many manuscripts have PhD students who landed tenure-track positions published in recent years? The purpose of this study is to explore publishing productivity of PhD students in the United States in four social science disciplines: political science, psychology, social work/family science, and sociology. Data were collected from the curriculum vitae of 500 scholars currently employed at 108 research institutions in the United States and who finished their doctorate degrees within the last five years (2010-14). We found that PhD students in our sample averaged 4.3 peer-reviewed journal or book chapter publications before graduation. Analysis of the independent disciplines of interest is also presented. Engineering design and communication courses are typically dynamic, active learning spaces that bring together a complex array of knowledge and skills. Their ambiguous nature has allowed, often contentiously, subjects such as language and communication, the arts, the humanities, and the social sciences to enter the discourse of engineering in a newly meaningful way. This article considers this development in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and, in particular, how the creativity and imagination required to succeed in engineering design might be cultivated in emergency distance learning. I consider a plethora of sources for guidance, with a special interest in how language and communication facilitates collaborative learning, creativity, and intersubjectivity and how that mediation is further mediated by educational technology in distance learning. I focus on the challenges faced and the resulting importance of training for both instructors and students. Finally, I argue that, despite our difficult circumstances, we should aim to encourage our students to exercise their imaginations, both independently and collaboratively, through our selection, framing, and facilitation of team design projects during the pandemic. The purpose of this article is threefold: (1) To study the course of development, approaches, and strategies of Spanish scientific publishers specializing in the humanities and social sciences; (2) to establish a profile of publishers based on their information and attitudes; and (3) to identify the opportunities and challenges which exist for publishers. In-depth interviews were conducted with twenty-eight relevant Spanish publishers; their attitudes were observed to be generally cautious, expectant, and in favour of maintaining the status quo, despite all being convinced that the e-book is an element transforming the publishing sector and that, in the near future, both the printed and electronic book will coexist. This study provides information direct from the publishers themselves, offering theorists detailed and accurate insight into the publishing sector and better opportunity to evaluate the impact of publisher attitudes on other agents implicated in the development of the e-book. The study puts on record the first stage of the irruption and consolidation of the e-book in the Spanish academic sector. It also establishes comparisons with publishing sectors of other countries. Elderly people and families are attracting the attention of many social scientists nowadays. The paper tries to explore how much social change in Asia is affecting family structure, and how deep elderly people are influenced by this transition. The trend of these studies has been following various ageing referring to socio-economic implications for those societies. A concept of ageing being followed in industrial societies is not well defined or touched in many of Asian societies yet. Rising challenges out of the phenomenon need due to find solutions to avoid further complications and controversies as far as a changing in family is concerned. Consequences brought from ageing such as: loneliness, loss of status, being apart from productive system and similarly reduction in quality of life could be sociologically tackled to harmonize the ageing phenomenon with family's responsibility. Hence, lowering family poverty would help much. Shortage of appropriate social security system in many of Asian societies, changing attitudes from youth towards elderly, change of family values system and their likes. All of those facts have led the elderly to poverty and inappropriate services at the ending stage of their life. The gap between the perceived need for assistance of the elderly and they received assistance could be filled up by family and that should be what they traditionally expect. Iran is also facing this challenge due to rapid changes in family, mainly caused by the change in family relations whose values have ended. The closure of Université de Moncton's sociology department in the spring of 1969 constitutes a unique event in the history of Canadian academics. In this paper, the authors examine the causes behind this closure. They present an intermingling and collision of motivations of different actors and movements in Acadian academic life during the late sixties: student associations, the young sociology professors, the professors association, the university administration, etc. Beyond being simply a historical anecdote, the closing of the sociology department symbolizes a larger political crisis, where two social conceptions compete: the administration envisaged a rational administration of the social, while the sociology students and professors wished for a society based on socialist and participative principles. Social scientists involved on cross-cultural research face a variety of challenges. This issue is discussed in the context of emic and etic approaches to research. A project illustrating some of these challenges is presented. A projective measure completed by each family as a group was used to capture the experience of family in Japanese and American families. Some culture-based hypotheses were confirmed, and an interesting serendipitous finding was explored in depth by a cross-cultural team. The unexpected finding was that pictures made by Japanese families, compared to those made by American families, were more likely to contain multiple images of the family. Further evaluation showed that the Japanese multiple images were most likely to reflect a textured, non-unitary experience, depicting a variety of contexts. This paper concludes by providing suggestions for enhancing the quality of cross-cultural research.

The article studies the link of divorce to women's equality and independence. A recurrent speculation in the social science literature is that divorce rates climb when women gain more independence in marriage or more equality with men. This idea is present in many accounts of the secular rise in divorce accompanying industrialization. This paper follows up on previous cross-cultural research testing this speculation by attempting to separate the effects of power from the effects of functional independence. Rather than dealing with the American scene, we attempt to answer the question of whether this speculative account of the link of divorce to women's equality and independence is broadly generalizable in a cross-cultural perspective. The subsequent literature raises questions on variation in divorce within both patrilineal and matrilineal groups, and on the exact mechanism that might make a difference in divorce rates between matrilineal and patrilineal societies. This interest in descent as a determinant of divorce rates has not been sustained within the cross-cultural research community, perhaps because studies using larger samples of societies do not bear out most of the ideas based on small scale comparisons.

Atleast since the publication of Aries "Centuries of Childhood," a wealth of historians and social scientists have produced findings on the history of childhood in western societies. The paper is an exercise in historical comparative sociology. As such, it aims at the formulation of delimited historical generalizations-- causal generalizations that are intermediate in scope, more limited than the ahistorical claims of evolutionary theories, and yet more general than many purely historical accounts. The study of childhood involves multiple dimensions, of which two are primary: the behaviors and attitudes of adults, particularly parents, towards children; and the experience of children themselves. The ultimate explanandum of the present project is the modem form of childhood. The notion of a modem structure of childhood masks a great variety in childhood experience between modem societies and within each society. Theories of family change infcmned by Marx emphasize the causal role of capitalist social relations in the determination of family life.

The article presents some issues of contemporary aboriginal communities and justice. The transformation of the Canadian State in accommodating a more informal, accessible form of local justice for aboriginal people is apparent, at least at the level of rhetoric. The search for justice is more complex than a simple return to tradition or a retention of the dominant system of criminal justice. The complexities of communities must be accommodated and the search for justice must acknowledge and reflect these complexities. The issues raised in this article underscore the need to adopt a broader understanding of communities than as bastions of traditional or of contemporary values. These issues emerged through a number of quite distinct research activities. The issues are important to consider if popular justice is to be more than a carbon-copy of the existing formal state system on the one hand, or a tool for maintaining local power arrangements on the other. It may be useful to see aboriginal communities in search of justice as an opportunity for community members to transcend social, economic and cultural differentiation thereby transforming communities. By raising fundamental issues with implications for aboriginal community justice, it is hoped that some of the complexities of contemporary communities will be explored.

This paper discusses the formation of a transdenominational and transnational online Christian social network. First, it explores online Christian community. Next, the main components and functions of an online social network are discussed. It then describes the development of 5loaves.net. Unusually for a scholar of international affairs working within the confines of academic social science, Stanley Hoffmann resisted tendencies to divorce descriptive and analytical work from ethical considerations, to study politics in isolation from culture and personal experience, and to focus on institutions and systems rather than individuals. All of these elements of intellectual non-conformity found expression in—and also reflected the influence of—his hero, Albert Camus. Hoffmann's engagement with Camus —reconstructed here from his scattered writings on that figure, and his accounts of his own life—in turn reveal crucial features of Hoffmann's own sensibility and experience, which shaped the scholar that he was and the work he produced. Camus served as an ethical exemplar, whose model and inspiration, set in balance with that of Hoffmann's mentor Raymond Aron, helped to define and sustain Hoffmann's distinctive balance between realism and idealism. Whether sociology should be part of bioethics has been extensively debated and critiqued. Feminist bioethics has long recognized the role of empirical work in bioethical inquiry; however, much feminist work in bioethics has been sidelined due to critiques of the role of social and sociological theory in bioethics research. In this essay, I examine how sociology plays a much deeper role in bioethical inquiry beyond the contribution of empirical methods. Building on these approaches, I show, through a case study, how social and sociological theory play as vital a role in conducting comprehensive bioethical inquiry as sociological methods and methodology, and thus should no longer be sidelined in empirical bioethics. This special issue marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the publication of J.B. Harley's 'Deconstructing the Map' (1989), which has had a major influence in the fields of critical cartography, the history of cartography, and human geography more generally. Over the last quarter century, this essay and related works have also been widely cited by scholars from a broad range of disciplines across the social sciences and humanities, serving as a key reference for those seeking to theorize the spatial politics of maps and mapping. Through such citational practices, 'Deconstructing the Map' has acquired a canonical status as one of the classics of critical cartographic theory, yet the limitations of its theoretical and methodological analyses are widely acknowledged even by Harley's strongest supporters. The contributors to this special issue discuss their own critical engagements with this foundational text as well as the extent to which Harley's work still resonates with contemporary perspectives in the field of critical cartography today. The broader aim of this collection is therefore not to further canonize Harley as the patron saint of critical cartography but rather to think through the limits of 'Deconstructing the Map' to ensure that current and future theorizations of the power of mapping remain open to self-critique and new becomings. Canada is a distinctive and rich contributor to criminological thought. As in many things, it benefits both from its proximity to powerhouses of the discipline in the United States and from distancing itself from them. Distancing is needed because criminology is enmeshed within a pathological disciplinary structure of social science research invented in the United States and Europe. Canada embraces more hybridity than most national criminologies, though it still falls short in its openness to insights from the South and East of the globe. An important part of the hybridity it does embrace in greater measure than other western societies is wisdom from its Indigenous peoples. Restorative justice, private policing, corporate crime, and crime-war are used to illustrate strengths of Canadian hybridity. This article evaluates the international performance of twenty-one major international social-science book publishers according to nineteen quality criteria. The companies chosen publish almost 19 per cent of titles worldwide on such critical political economy issues as dependency theory and world systems theory, as well as 7 per cent of all titles on globalization, the world system, or the European Union, and all have been important outlets in the past, especially for writers outside North America. The author applies parametric and non-parametric social-science indicator construction in the tradition of Almas Heshmati to arrive at a performance ranking for the twenty-one companies based on the nineteen criteria. The article explores the semantic and experiential meanings of diaspora within the context of global Catholicism. Drawing from research conducted in Italy, the United Kingdom, and Turkey with the reformist movement known as the Neocatechumenal Way (NCW), the analysis delves into the broader question of how the refashioning of global religions is transforming the relation between people, places, and belonging and is contributing to the emotional, practical, and organizational dimensions of diaspora. The discussion first delves into the role of new missionary subjects in cementing a new proximity between the world Catholic population and Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern holy centers of Catholicism. Second, it draws from current definitions of diaspora to consider how a diasporic identity is constructed by dispersed NCW communities in daily lives and rituals. The analysis goes beyond the dimensions of ethnicity and migration, and claims the need to reassert the importance of religious case studies in our understanding of contemporary diaspora. The case of the NCW holds relevance here, insofar as it unravels how a reformist movement, by gaining progressive institutionalization within the Catholic Church, is also undermining some of its consolidated features by creating renewed cartographies of religious belonging. The article argues that the traditional semantics of diaspora--those developed in religious paradigms--deserve renewed attention in the social sciences in order to map ongoing transformations in world religions, and the attendant shifting identifications that characterize even more institutionalized religions like Catholicism. Recently Andrews and Dowden (2007) published an article proposing that both offender and victim well-being could be enhanced by utilizing the risk–need–responsivity model to guide the legal and court systems in crime prevention (rather than therapy). Consequently, crime-prevention jurisprudence (defined as a law-and-justice objective reflecting the language of personality and social psychology) was proposed as an alternative to therapeutic jurisprudence (defined as a mental-health objective reflecting the clinical language of forensic mental health). The authors erroneously claim that therapeutic jurisprudence is a mental-health concept whose aim is to provide therapy that improves well-being in offenders rather than to demonstrate concern for victims. In fact, therapeutic jurisprudence is a legal concept that utilizes social-science knowledge to highlight the therapeutic and anti-therapeutic impacts of the law, legal procedures, and legal roles on all individuals, including victims. This article will respond to Andrews and Dowden by challenging three assumptions they make regarding the role of therapeutic jurisprudence. This response concludes that the focus of offender rehabilitation should be on enhancing community protection by balancing offender rights and victim rights. Therapeutic jurisprudence already provides such a framework and, therefore, the promise of crime-prevention jurisprudence fails to add value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined how information literacy curriculum and instruction was constructed during a grade 9 social studies research project as a teacher and teacher librarian worked with the whole class for ten periods in the school library. Based on video observations, teacher and student interviews, curriculum documents, and field notes, results showed that teachers held different views of information literacy, what constitutes a curriculum of information literacy, and instructional responsibilities for teaching that curriculum. The collaborative premise of information literacy instruction was consequently not realized. Although the teacher librarian attempted to establish an inquiry-based approach, the WebQuest designed for this unit appeared to reinforce students' task-driven, procedural, fact-finding notions of research projects. Current educational schemata of information literacy include skills for using the new literacies of the Internet to solve problems and the teacher librarian provided instruction in applying "operational" criteria to evaluate websites. The authors argue that the conventional paradigms of information literacy disable students from engaging in authentic and sustained inquiry and from expanding their development of new literacies, particularly the critical new literacies that enable social change. The article argues that in some circumstances, social agreement for the redistribution of wealth may obtain widespread support if and only if it contains a clause postponing the implementation of the redistribution by a given period of time. It discusses the reasons that parties may occasionally be more willing to enter into a deferred-implementation agreement.

This article comments on the novel "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court," by Mark Twain. This novel is a narrative account of the violence that ensures when two absolute world views come into conflict. The two absolute world views presented are the one by Camelot and by Hank Morgan, which form the basis for Twain's critique of self-assured sociopolitical visions in general and of the inevitable violence perpetrated in the interest of that which is natural and that which is good.
