Present and future climatic trends are expected to markedly alter water fluxes and stores in the hydrologic cycle. In addition, water demand continues to grow due to increased human use and a growing population. Sustainably managing water resources requires a thorough understanding of water storage and flow in natural, agricultural, and urban ecosystems. Measurements of stable isotopes of water (hydrogen and oxygen) in the water cycle (atmosphere, soils, plants, surface water, and groundwater) can provide information on the transport pathways, sourcing, dynamics, ages, and storage pools of water that is difficult to obtain with other techniques. However, the potential of these techniques for practical questions has not been fully exploited yet. Here, we outline the benefits and limitations of potential applications of stable isotope methods useful to water managers, farmers, and other stakeholders. We also describe several case studies demonstrating how stable isotopes of water can support water management decision-making. Finally, we propose a workflow that guides users through a sequence of decisions required to apply stable isotope methods to examples of water management issues. We call for ongoing dialogue and a stronger connection between water management stakeholders and water stable isotope practitioners to identify the most pressing issues and develop best-practice guidelines to apply these techniques.

In the temperate mixed oak forests of Central Europe, outbreaks of insects such as the spongy moth, Lymantria dispar, can cause severe defoliation and insecticide is sometimes applied for their control. Parasitoids, mainly Hymenoptera and Diptera, are among the most diverse and important natural enemies of caterpillars in these forests. However, due to their cryptic lifestyle and taxonomic difficulties, we lack knowledge on the impact of insecticide applications on complex host‐parasitoid networks. In a large‐scale field experiment, we tested the effect of spraying the lepidopteran‐specific insecticide Mimic (tebufenozide) on the abundance and community composition of both adult and larval parasitoids. We combined morphological identification, DNA barcoding and metabarcoding to identify parasitoids adult or inside caterpillars, both sampled by canopy fogging during an outbreak and two subsequent years. We analysed the abundance of parasitoids, community composition and network specialisation using statistical methods that account for sample incompleteness in host‐parasitoid data. For adult parasitoid assemblages, we found strong annual effects on abundance, with highest numbers of adult parasitoids occurring in the outbreak year, as well as on annual changes in community composition, but no effect linked to insecticide application. However, the abundance and species number of immature parasitoids revealed negative effects of insecticide application, while community composition was only affected by annual variation. Coverage‐based network analyses showed a reduction of taxonomic network diversity and network specialisation associated with insecticide application in the first 2 years. Synthesis and applications: This real‐world experiment shows that parasitoid populations respond immediately to large‐scale outbreaks but only limited to local disturbances. Results indicate that this group of natural enemies exhibits high mobility, enabling them to track host populations across large spatial scales. However, our observation of reduced network specialisation after insecticide application is a warning signal that ecosystem function, and consequently natural pest control services, may be impaired by human interference at the local stand scale. Shuozhou is a typical coal mining city, and the Pingshuo Antaibao open-pit coal mine in its area is one of the largest open-pit coal mines in China. The mining of coal resources is an important part of ensuring national energy security, and at the same time, it inevitably has a certain impact on the ecology, such as coal dust generated by open-pit mining will affect air quality, soil, water and vegetation. It is of great significance to explore the temporal and spatial variation of ecological environment quality in coal mining cities for ecological protection and sustainable social and economic development. Based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, this paper combines the index-based coal dust index (ICDI) and Remote Sensing Ecological Index (RSEI) models to construct an improved RSEI (IRSEI) that can reflect coal mining cities. This paper explores the spatial–temporal evolution characteristics and spatial correlation of ecological environment quality in Shuozhou from 2000 to 2020. The results showed that the average value of IRSEI in Shuozhou was between 0.262 and 0.418, and the overall change showed an upward trend. The growth areas of ecological environment quality are mainly located in the eastern and southwestern areas with good vegetation growth, and these regions have vigorously implemented the Northern Shelter Forest Project, afforestation and greening projects, implemented the forest resource management and protection responsibility system, promoted the construction of ecological civilization, and significantly improved the ecological environment. While the declining areas are mainly located in the central and southern regions where mining activities and human activities are more intensive. The IRSEI in the study area showed a significant spatial positive correlation, and the agglomeration types of the spatial pattern were mainly high-high and low-low agglomeration types, with the high-high agglomeration types mainly distributed in the eastern and southwestern regions, and the low-low agglomeration types distributed in the northern and south-central regions of the study area. The trend of low and low agglomeration has decreased, which further proves that the ecological restoration measures taken by the government, such as returning farmland to forests, integrating protection and restoration of mountains, waters, forests, fields, lakes, grasslands, and sands, controlling soil erosion, and stage wise reclamation of coal mining subsidence areas, have improved the ecological environment quality of Shuozhou. This study provides a reference for understanding the spatiotemporal changes of the ecological environment of coal mining cities, and is conducive to formulating appropriate ecological protection strategies. Accurate estimation of forest aboveground biomass (AGB) is crucial for understanding and managing forest ecosystems in the context of global environmental change, and also provides a scientific basis for national and regional ecological planning and carbon emission reduction policies. In order to investigate the regional pattern of forest AGB and its influencing factors in central China, a total of 469 sample plots were measured along four sample transects and on six mountains in field survey. The results showed that: 1) Two longitudinal distribution patterns of forest AGB were found, and one was that the AGB in the Qinling Mountains and the Daba Moutains gradually decreased from east to west, and the other was that the AGB in the areas between the two mountains gradually increased from east to west. The latitudinal distribution pattern of the forest AGB showed an "increasing–decreasing-increasing–decreasing" trend from south to north. The altitudinal distribution pattern showed a "first increasing-then decreasing" pattern with increasing altitude. 2) The influence of each factor on the spatial pattern of forest AGB was manifested as temperature > precipitation > HAI > topography, indicating that the spatial pattern of forest AGB in central China was the result of the interaction of climate, human activities and natural factors. Multifunctional productive systems based on native species management, a new paradigm that counters colonial worldviews, offer sustainable sources of food and materials while preserving biodiversity. Despite extensive discussions in herbaceous and agricultural systems, applying this concept to native forests in Northern Patagonia remains unclear. Multifunctional system implementation can be approached from a fractal perspective, with evaluations at the stand level being essential for understanding ecological processes across scales. Here, we exemplify research and management for multiple native species, integrating results from 10 years of field experiments on the impacts of biomass harvesting intensity (HI) on nine Nature's Contributions to People (NCPs), including habitat creation, pollination, soil formation, hazard regulation, prevention of invasions, and provision of energy, food, materials, and options. Our findings reveal that some regulating NCPs peak with null HI, while certain material and regulating NCPs maximize at the highest HI. Low to intermediate HI (30-50%) show a more balanced provision of all NCPs. Our results suggest that some biomass extraction is necessary to enhance most NCPs, emphasizing the importance of balancing material provisioning and biodiversity conservation in management schemes. We propose future directions for designing multifunctional forest systems, advocating for low-density plantation of native tree species with high wood quality within the natural forest matrix. This approach may yield higher NCPs levels over time compared to the current cattle breeding and wood extraction system, with implications beyond Patagonia, considering historical associations of such practices with colonial worldviews globally. This study investigates the carbon offset potential in Espoo, Finland, by comparing a construction-impacted deforestation site with a larger conserved forest area. Addressing a knowledge gap in localized forest conservation as a CO2 offset method, our research quantifies the carbon stock and sequestration impacts under both baseline and alternative scenarios for the two study sites. The baseline scenario for offset site reflects standard forest management practices, while the alternative scenario involves complete forest conservation without active management. Our findings reveal that the conserved forest (79 ha), dominated by Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), increased its carbon stock by 26 Mg C ha-1 in soil and 65 Mg C ha-1 in biomass. This enhancement is sufficient to compensate for the smaller deforestation site's (19 ha), also containing a mix of Norway spruce and Scots pine, stock loss of 186 Mg C ha-1 in soil and 43 Mg C ha-1 in biomass. Furthermore, this study illuminates the complexities of CO2 compensation regulation and emphasizes the necessity for robust, transparent carbon accounting practices. Woody plants are a source of provisioning ecosystem services. Coffee management impacts forest composition, structure, and diversity. We studied the effect of coffee management intensification on woody plants and their associated provisioning ecosystem services under three contrasting forest management regimes in southwest Ethiopia. The study employed mixed approaches (vegetation assessment and ethnoecological study) to collect the data. Woody plants were collected from 189 plots and perceived local ecosystem services were identified by 136 individuals through an ethnoecological approach. The total number of woody plants recorded in the natural forest, coffee forest, and coffee agroforest was 971, 945, and 521 respectively. Species richness in natural forest, coffee forest, and coffee agroforest were 57, 54, and 53 respectively. The local people perceived 17 different provisioning ecosystem services collected from the three forest types. The result showed that there is a positive relationship between the diversity and use value of woody plants across the three forest management regimes. Coffee management intensification simplifies the stand structure, woody plant composition, and ecosystem services of the forest. Plant use value increases in coffee agroforests. Remote sensing of forests is a powerful tool for monitoring the biodiversity of ecosystems, maintaining general planning, and accounting for resources. Various sensors bring together heterogeneous data, and advanced machine learning methods enable their automatic handling in wide territories. Key forest properties usually under consideration in environmental studies include dominant species, tree age, height, basal area and timber stock. Being proxies of stand productivity, they can be utilized for forest carbon stock estimation to analyze forests' status and proper climate change mitigation measures on a global scale. In this study, we aim to develop an effective machine learning-based pipeline for automatic carbon stock estimation using solely freely available and regularly updated satellite observations. We employed multispectral Sentinel-2 remote sensing data to predict forest structure characteristics and produce their detailed spatial maps. Using the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm in classification and regression settings and management-level inventory data as reference measurements, we achieved quality of predictions of species equal to 0.75 according to the F1-score, and for stand age, height, and basal area, we achieved an accuracy of 0.75, 0.58 and 0.56, respectively, according to the R2. We focused on the growing stock volume as the main proxy to estimate forest carbon stocks on the example of the stem pool. We explored two approaches: a direct approach and a hierarchical approach. The direct approach leverages the remote sensing data to create the target maps, and the hierarchical approach calculates the target forest properties using predicted inventory characteristics and conversion equations. We estimated stem carbon stock based on the same approach: from Earth observation imagery directly and using biomass and conversion factors developed for the northern regions. Thus, our study proposes an end-to-end solution for carbon stock estimations based on the complexation of inventory data at the forest stand level, Earth observation imagery, machine learning predictions and conversion equations for the region. ABSTRACT Aim Location Taxon Methods Results Main Conclusions Many tree species may be threatened with declines in range and biomass, or even extinction, if they cannot disperse or adapt quickly enough to keep pace with climate change. One potential, and potentially risky, strategy to mitigate this threat is assisted migration (AM), the intentional movement of species to facilitate population range shifts to more climatically suitable locations under climate change. The ability for AM to minimise risk and maximise conservation and forestry outcomes depends on a multi‐faceted decision process for determining, what, where and how much to move. We provide an assessment on how the benefits and risks of AM could affect the decision‐making process.Mountainous coastal western United States.Trees.We used a dynamic vegetation model parameterised with 23 tree species.We found that most of the modelled species are likely to experience a substantial decline in biomass, with many potentially facing regional extinction by 2100 under the high‐emission SSP5‐85 climate‐change scenario. Though simulations show AM had little effect on the forestry goal of total biomass across all species, its effects on the conservation goal of promoting individual species' persistence were far more substantial. Among eight AM strategies (differing in the life cycle stage of movement and target destination selection criteria), the approach that conserved the highest biomass for individual species involved relocating target seedlings to areas that recently experienced fire. Although this strategy significantly reduced extinction risk for six at‐risk species compared with no action, it also slightly reduced biomass of four species, due to increasing competition. Species with relatively weak tolerance to drought, fire or high temperature were the most likely candidate groups for AM.Our simulations indicate that AM can aid conservation by reducing extinction risks for species vulnerable to climate change, but it has limited impact on forestry‐specific goals, affecting overall biomass minimally. The understory herbaceous flora plays a pivotal role in regulating the structural stability, complexity, and ecological function of forest communities. It is crucial to investigate the impact of the intricate connections between these factors and the forces driving the diversity of herbaceous species within natural broadleaf understory forests can assist forest managers in developing optimal forest structure optimization techniques, allowing them to adjust the forest species diversity. In this study, Pearson correlation analysis, conventional correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression were employed to elucidate the relationship between stand structure, soil nutrients, and understory herbaceous species richness in natural broadleaved forests. Structural equation modeling was utilized to ascertain the influence of multiple factors on understory herbaceous species diversity and to evaluate the underlying pathways. The results indicated a significant negative correlation between stand closure and the Simpson's and Shannon-Wiener's indices, and between the mixing degree and the Pielou evenness index, Simpson's index, and Shannon-Wiener's index (p<0.05). Furthermore, a significant positive correlation was observed between soil nutrients, specifically organic matter and total phosphorus, and the Pielou evenness index and Shannon-Wiener's index (p<0.05). It was found that total phosphorus was significantly positively correlated with both the Pielou evenness index and the Shannon-Wiener index (p<0.05). The correlation coefficients of the first group of typical variables in the typical correlation analysis were 0.498 and 0.585, respectively (p<0.05). From the set of typical variables of stand structure, it can be seen that the Hegyi competition index and the canopy density affected the diversity of understory herbaceous plants. The composite index demonstrated the greatest impact, with loadings of 0.872 and -0.506, respectively. The Simpson and Shannon-Wiener indices exhibited the most sensitive loadings of -0.441 and -0.408, respectively. The soil nutrients of SOM and TN affected the understory herbaceous plant species diversity composite index, with greater loadings of -0.184 and 1.002, respectively. The path coefficient of the understory herbaceous diversity stand structure was 0.35. The path coefficient with soil nutrient content was found to be 0.23 following structural equation analysis and the path coefficient between stand structure and soil nutrient content was 0.21, which indirectly affect the diversity of understory herbaceous species. To enhance the diversity of herbaceous species, it is recommended that the canopy density and tree density of the upper forest be reduced appropriately, while the degree of mixing and the level of spatial distribution of trees be adjusted in a manner that maintains a reasonable stand structure. This study focuses on the Ecuadorian Amazon, a crucial region for forest biodiversity and conservation of native species, which faces challenges due to timber extraction. The research objective was to characterize timber harvesting during 2012 to 2021, focusing on the ten most harvested forest species in terms of volume and provincial distribution, as well as their conservation status according to the IUCN. For the methodology, data were extracted and analyzed from Ecuador's Forest Management System (SAF), focusing on timber extraction in six provinces and assessing 210 species. The results revealed that, from 2,627,659.17 m3 authorized, 2,296,238.08 m3 were harvested, representing 54.17% of the national timber harvest from native forests. Species of the Fabaceae family predominated in number and volume, with yields varying from 0.5 m3/ha in Orellana to 2.8 m3/ha in Zamora Chinchipe. Analysis of the IUCN categories showed that 67.6% (142 species) are Least Concern (LC), while 3.3% (7 species) are Vulnerable (VU), and 1% (2 species) Endangered (EN). Two species were listed as Data Deficient (DD), one as Critically Endangered (CR) and one as Near Threatened (NT). It is crucial to note that, of the 210 species analyzed, 55 species (26.2%) are not included in the IUCN database, highlighting the importance of more detailed assessments for their conservation and distribution. Nostalgia has reemerged in recent years in response to political, environmental, and other instabilities. This study uses transcripts from fifty-five in-depth interviews with three groups of forest workers to examine the experience of nostalgia in forest management. This takes multiple forms, including nostalgia for place, for work, and for a “pristine” landscape of the past. While the former two are prominent among loggers and, to a lesser extent, governmental workers, the latter type emerges primarily among members of environmental organizations. All three types have implications for the ways people construct their own identities, feelings toward others, and beliefs about how people ought to interact with the forest. They also reflect disruptions to environmental knowledge. Ultimately, nostalgia should be understood as a manifestation of the things that people long for in their current circumstances, most notably, belonging, purpose, and harmony with the landscape. Documenting floristic diversity, its natural history traits and habitat affiliation offers crucial insights for developing conservation strategies and management plans for regional biodiversity. In this study, we employed random sampling technique to investigate the floristic composition, natural history trait diversity and habitat distribution among 12 major forest types spread across an elevational gradient of 350–3450 m a.s.l. in the western Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir. We recorded 451 species belonging to 90 families in the study region, with herbaceous growth form, perennial life span and therophyte categories dominant. We observed a steady increase in species richness from 800 to 2000 m a.s.l., with highest at 1750 m a.s.l. in the Himalayan dry temperate forest type and then a decreasing trend with elevation. In terms of species turnover, the lowest dissimilarity of 36.8% was found between the Himalayan dry temperate and Fir forests. Whereas, considering species replacement (βsne), the highest similarity of 17.3% was found between the lower western Himalayan and Himalayan dry temperate forests. This shows that beta‐diversity patterns between different forest types are mostly driven by species replacement. Multivariate analysis revealed three major groups in the entire forest species pool. Habitat‐wise, 34% species were recorded in the natural habitats, while the remaining 66% were found in human‐modified habitats (roadsides, piospheres). Background: Thinning practices are useful measures in forest management and play an essential role in maintaining ecological stability. However, the effects of thinning on the soil properties and microbial community in large Chinese fir timber plantations remain unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in soil physicochemical properties and microbial community composition in topsoil (0–20 cm) under six different intensities (i.e., 300 (R300), 450 (R450), 600 (R600), 750 (R750) and 900 (R900) trees per hectare and 1650 (R1650) as a control) in a large Chinese fir timber plantation. Results: Compared with the CK treatment, thinning significantly altered the contents of soil organic carbon (SOC) and its fractions but not in a linear fashion; these indicators were highest in R900. In addition, thinning did not significantly affect the soil microbial community diversity indices but significantly affected the relative abundance of the core microbial community. Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Actinobacteria were the dominant bacterial phyla; the relative abundances of Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria were highest in R900, and that of Actinobacteria was lowest in R900. The dominant fungal phyla were Ascomycota, Basidiomycota and Mucoromycota; the relative abundance of Ascomycota was lowest in R900, and that of Mucoromycota was highest in R900. The fungal microbial community composition was more sensitive than the bacterial community composition. The activity of the carbon-cycling genes was not linearly correlated with thinning, and the abundance of C-cycle genes was highest in R900. Conclusions: These findings are important because they show that SOC and its fractions and the abundance of the soil microorganism community in large Chinese fir timber plantations can be significantly altered by thinning, thus affecting the capacity for carbon storage. Background Aims Methods Results Conclusions Science‐based decisions regarding forest management require the knowledge of the impact of thinning regimens on the forests’ vitality and resilience. There is no systematic study analysing the role of forest management approaches on the nutritional status of forests, serving as a surrogate for their health and growth.We assessed the impact of ‘heavy thinning from above’ versus ‘no management’ on the foliar chemistry of old‐growth European beech stands on a calcareous site with cambisol/chromic luvisol soil in Thuringia, Germany.Macro‐ and micronutrients were analysed by serial foliar analysis of six trees per experimental plot over 13 years (2009–2021). To assess potential differences of foliar chemistry between the two plots and over time, a linear mixed‐effects model was applied.Foliar concentrations of all macro‐ and micronutrients were not significantly different between the two plots (p > 0.05), demonstrating that the management approach had no relevant impact on the nutritional status of beech trees growing at the calcareous site. Furthermore, all foliar concentrations were dynamic over the 13‐year evaluation period. Hence, long‐term forest monitoring is crucial to capture the complex interplay between the trees and environmental conditions.Serial foliar analysis allows for a reliable evaluation of a forest's nutritional status. The results indicate that either regimen, that is, ‘heavy thinning from above’ or ‘no management’, shall not pose any risk in terms of growth and stability. Managing forests to sustain their diversity and functioning is a major challenge in a changing world. Despite the key role of understory vegetation in driving forest biodiversity, regeneration and functioning, few studies address the functional dimensions of understory vegetation response to silvicultural management. We assessed the influence of the silvicultural regimes on the functional diversity and redundancy of European forest understory. We gathered vascular plant abundance data from more than 2000 plots in European forests, each associated with one out of the five most widespread silvicultural regimes. We used generalized linear mixed models to assess the effect of different silvicultural regimes on understory functional diversity (Rao's quadratic entropy) and functional redundancy, while accounting for climate and soil conditions, and explored the reciprocal relationship between three diversity components (functional diversity, redundancy and dominance) across silvicultural regimes through a ternary diversity diagram. Intensive silvicultural regimes are associated with a decrease in functional diversity and an increase in functional redundancy, compared with unmanaged conditions. This means that although intensive management may buffer communities' functions against species or functional losses, it also limits the range of understory response to environmental changes. Policy implications. Different silvicultural regimes influence different facets of understory functional features. While unmanaged forests can be used as a reference to design silvicultural practices in compliance with biodiversity conservation targets, different silvicultural options should be balanced at landscape scale to sustain the multiple forest functions that human societies are increasingly demanding. Introduction: Forests managed for timber production can also be managed for biodiversity conservation by retaining structures typical of old-growth forests, which provide heterogenous structures for forest-dwelling species, including birds. Ecoacoustic monitoring of forest birds is now a well-studied field, however the extent to which acoustic indices can reflect bird assemblage responses to stands of lower or higher structural heterogeneity is disputed. Method: In this study, we acoustically surveyed 75 plots over two years in mature, previously managed forests and computed acoustic indices from the recordings. We first identified an acoustic index that significantly correlated with bird richness over more than one spring season. Next, we tested the response of bird richness to individual forest structural elements using linear regressions. We then repeated this analysis but combined the individual structural elements into one structural composition variable using an NMDS and gam smooth overlay, to compare the effect of individual forest structures versus overall forest heterogeneity on bird richness. We then repeated this analysis using our selected acoustic index, the Normalized Difference Soundscape Index (NDSI), to see if it followed the same patterns as bird richness in response to individual and collective forest structural elements. Results: Our results showed that plots with high bird richness were also associated with high NDSI values, and high values of both variables occurred in plots with high structural heterogeneity (tree species richness, tree size variability, and snag height variability) and low amounts of standing and lying deadwood. Discussion: Our findings suggest that once an acoustic index can be identified as a robust correlate of bird richness, it can serve as a proxy for the response of birds to differences in forest structural heterogeneity within a managed forest context. It is therefore possible for forest managers interested in conserving or increasing bird richness in their production forests to identify a robust acoustic index to track the response of bird richness to management decisions over time. Aims: China is one of the countries in the world most seriously affected by typhoons, which pose a great threat to the eucalyptus plantation industry. However, few studies have comprehensively accounted for the impact of key traits on the wind damage/resistance of eucalyptus. Methods: To identify the key factors affecting the wind resistance of eucalyptus, 20 eucalyptus genotypes were selected; a total of 18 traits, including the wind damage index, growth traits, and wood traits, were measured, and the wind resistance was determined via the tree-pulling test. Results: Correlation, principal component, canonical correlation, and path analyses were performed to evaluate these traits. Correlation analysis revealed that the wind resistance of eucalyptus plants was related to the tree height, volume, and duration of stress wave propagation. Principal components and tree-pulling variables were further used for correlation and path analyses. Canonical correlation analysis and the PA-OV model showed that holocellulose and lignin contents and fiber width, as well as growth traits, were important factors affecting the stability of standing trees under typhoon conditions. The key traits influencing the wind resistance of Eucalyptus camaldulensis, which may provide a reference for evaluating the wind resistance of Eucalyptus varieties for forest management, were identified. The sustainable management of forestry activities, together with changes in vegetation due to deforestation or degradation, contributes to sediment risk and increases the risk of surface runoff. Changes in meteorological criteria, such as precipitation and temperature, as a result of global climate change are also significant factors affecting sediment risk. In this study, sediment risk was predicted spatially and temporally for 65 provinces in Turkey using criteria related to average forest road construction rates and average wood harvesting rates for the period between 2017 and 2021, as well as climate change models (GFDL-ESM2M, HadGEM2-ES, and MPI-ESM-MR) and their scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5) for five-year periods between 2022 and 2096. In addition, changes in sediment risk in the short and long terms—that is, trends—were determined in spatially and temporally. Entropy-based WASPAS and fuzzy clustering analysis were used together to determine sediment risk in this context. The results show that, in terms of sediment risk, criteria related to forestry activities had a higher weight than criteria related to climate change when looking at the overall criterion weights. In addition, it was generally observed that the contribution of the average precipitation criterion to sediment risk increased in weight over five-year periods in the context of climate change models and scenarios. Regarding climate change models and scenarios, it was found that provinces consistently in the highest risk category (R1) over five-year periods were mainly located in the Black Sea and Marmara regions. In addition, provinces showing an increase or decrease in sediment risk trends between two consecutive five-year periods were mostly found in the Black Sea and Mediterranean regions. When evaluating the 15-year time intervals, differences in sediment risk trends were found between the geographical regions. In conclusion, the study results indicate that, regionally, Turkey's northern regions, especially the Black Sea and Marmara regions, as well as the southern Mediterranean and western Aegean regions, will become increasingly vulnerable to sediment risk over time owing to the impact of climate change. Cork oak (Quercus suber L.) mortality has reached alarming proportions in the last decades, exacerbated by climate change. Understanding this phenomenon is crucial in finding mitigation or adaptation strategies. This study conducts a diachronic analysis of cork oak mortality over 10 years using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) tools, focusing on Portugal's Tagus Lezíria region. Topographic, edaphic and climatic variables were employed to create maps of edaphoclimatic aptitude for cork oaks. Dead trees were identified using remote sensing techniques and crown coverage was determined to calculate the trees' mortality index. The diachronic analysis aimed the exploration of climate change effects on cork oak mortality. A decrease in precipitation was observed, significantly impacting stands with canopy cover below 40%. Furthermore, a negative effect of solar radiation identified only in stands with canopy cover of 40% suggested its role in cork oak decline. This study introduces a novel perspective, highlighting the protective effect of denser canopy cover against excessive solar radiation and the impact of reduced precipitation. In this work, we present a study about the application of bi-temporal, large interval aerial laser scans for constructing of tree growth models and estimating site index quality based on the measured increments from the laser scans. We compared two LiDAR scans with 14 years of difference in the national park area, where most areas are unmanaged. We derived the increment curve based on the Chapman-Richard growth formula. We used site index estimates from forest management plans from the national scale as the ground truth (both absolute and relative). We constructed three predictive models for site index estimates from bi-temporal scans, in modalities with and without stand age. Including the stand age improved all models, but even without the age, the models performed relatively well for differentiation between better and worse sites. At this moment, it is not directly possible to estimate age from remotely sensed data, but consistent monitoring, with laser scanning or photogrammetry, undoubtedly detects the harvest or dieback, so in the future, age can be considered as a variable easily estimated from remotely sensed data and so remote sensed material are viable source for understanding of forest growth and production. By exploring the species diversity and soil physical and chemical properties of four typical forest types (natural broad-leaved mixed forest, artificial broad-leaved mixed forest, artificial broad-leaved pure forest, and artificial coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest) in Zengcheng District, Guangzhou City, based on their origins and stand types, we analyzed their species diversity differences and the relationship between them and soil environmental factors, providing a theoretical basis for improving the quality of natural forests accurately. Using the typical quadrat survey method and statistical analysis methods, we calculated the Magalef richness index, Shannon-Wiener index, and Simpson dominance index to analyze the differences in species composition, dominance, and species diversity of the arbor and shrub layers in typical forest communities in Zengcheng District, and conducted correlation analysis with soil environmental factors. A total of 193 species belonging to 82 families and 153 genera were surveyed in the study area. The dominant species and their importance values of the four forest types were as follows: natural broad-leaved mixed forest (Machilus thunbergii, 6. 36%), artificial broad-leaved mixed forest (M. thunbergii, 5. 52%), artificial broad-leaved pure forest (Eucalyptus, 29. 54%), and artificial coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest (Canarium, 4. 73%). The dominant species in natural and artificial broad-leaved mixed forests showed an inverted J-shaped distribution, while artificial coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forests and broad-leaved pure forests showed a normal distribution. The four forest types had significant differences in species diversity, soil nitrogen, and phosphorus content. Among them, the artificial broad-leaved pure forest had the lowest species diversity in the arbor layer and the highest species diversity in the shrub layer. The soil nutrient content of the four forest types varied significantly, and there was a significant correlation between species diversity and soil physical and chemical properties. In the fields of agriculture and forestry, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is a critical indicator for assessing the physiological state of plants. Traditional imaging sensors can only collect two-dimensional vegetation distribution data, while dual-wavelength LiDAR technology offers the capability to capture vertical distribution information, which is essential for forest structure recovery and precision agriculture management. However, existing LiDAR systems face challenges in detecting echoes at two wavelengths, typically relying on multiple detectors or array sensors, leading to high costs, bulky systems, and slow detection rates. This study introduces a time-stretched method to separate two laser wavelengths in the time dimension, enabling a more cost-effective and efficient dual-spectral (600 nm and 800 nm) LiDAR system. Utilizing a supercontinuum laser and a single-pixel detector, the system incorporates specifically designed time-stretched transmission optics, enhancing the efficiency of NDVI data collection. We validated the ranging performance of the system, achieving an accuracy of approximately 3 mm by collecting data with a high sampling rate oscilloscope. Furthermore, by detecting branches, soil, and leaves in various health conditions, we evaluated the system's performance. The dual-wavelength LiDAR can detect variations in NDVI due to differences in chlorophyll concentration and water content. Additionally, we used the radar equation to analyze the actual scene, clarifying the impact of the incidence angle on reflectance and NDVI. Scanning the Red Sumach, we obtained its NDVI distribution, demonstrating its physical characteristics. In conclusion, the proposed dual-wavelength LiDAR based on the time-stretched method has proven effective in agricultural and forestry applications, offering a new technological approach for future precision agriculture and forest management. Climate change increases the vulnerability of relict forests. To address this problem, regional Forest Services require silvicultural and conservation actions to designate specific forest management alternatives. In this context, the main objective of this study was to develop a methodology to map complex Abies pinsapo forest typologies using multispectral and low-density airborne LiDAR data and machine learning. Stand density, species composition and cover were used to identify seven forest typologies. Random forest resulted as the more accurate model (OA = 0.62; Kappa = 0.43) to classify those types based on multispectral and LiDAR data, although showing a moderate model performance. Classification performance showed great differences between forest types with better results for the uneven-aged stands compared to the even-aged and two-aged stands. The developed typology was applied to supply local forest managers with more accurate forest maps that can be used to improve forest management plans. The typology proposed is easy to apply in forest management practices since it only uses as input the diameter at breast height, tree density and specific composition. The study demonstrated the potential of low-density LiDAR data combined with spectral information from high-resolution orthophotos to predict the structural characteristics of complex forest typologies. The investment potential for biochar production from low‐value forest biomass in the western USA is over USD 20 billion at current carbon prices. This investment could generate approximately 70 million carbon credits annual – roughly the same number currently generated globally by all forestry and agricultural carbon projects. Biochar production that utilizes woody biomass specifically from wildfire fuel thinning projects as a feedstock can contribute financially to much‐needed fuel thinning projects. Each coupled biochar and carbon credit production system has positive returns in certain scenarios. Light upgrades to existing biopower facilities have the highest returns, with internal rates of return generally between 10–30%. Mobile biochar production often had the lowest returns. However, land managers can subsidize mobile biochar production up to USD 150–300 per tonne of biochar and still save money in comparison with pile‐burning low‐value biomass while also generating approximately one carbon credit for every two bone‐dry tonnes of low‐value biomass turned to biochar. The critical barrier to industry growth is the lack of transparent biomass supply chains that enable long‐term contracting for feedstock, production schedules, and investment. Moving forward, there are three potential pathways for the biochar industry to scale and utilize biomass from forest management and fuel thinning projects. Either (1) the carbon market will need to sustain high carbon prices, (2) a subsidy or other mechanism will need to decrease the cost of feedstock biomass, or (3) production will need to take advantage of economies of scale to bring down biochar prices while increasing production. Despite suffering dramatic declines due to habitat loss and overexploitation, tortoises and freshwater turtles in Southeast Asia remain understudied. Sustainable forest management offers a promising approach for advancing the conservation of threatened turtle populations. This study examines the effect of reduced impact logging (RIL), a sustainable forestry method, on 2 freshwater turtle species. We examined detectability patterns and habitat relationships for the threatened Malayan flat‐shelled turtle (Notochelys platynota) and the non‐threatened Malayan soft‐shelled turtle (Dogania subplana) in 8 streams within a commercial forest reserve between March and July 2019, in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Using single‐species occupancy models, we identified covariates associated with the detection and occupancy probabilities of these species across a post‐harvest recovery gradient (1–21 years since logging). Covariates used in the models were obtained directly from the field or from open‐source remote sensing data. Results for soft‐shelled turtles were inconclusive. In contrast, we found a negative association between monthly rainfall and flat‐shelled turtle detectability. The occupancy probability of flat‐shelled turtles was positively associated with greater distance from logging roads and higher stream flow accumulation. Occupancy probability for flat‐shelled turtles and soft‐shelled turtles was relatively high throughout the reserve (0.79 ± 0.1 [SD] and 0.57 ± 0.22, respectively). The study focuses on actor participation and power dynamics in the REDD+ project within the Bale eco-region, a vital facet of global climate policy for sustainable forest resource management. The Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) of the World Bank supports developing countries in preparing for international REDD+ policy implementation, emphasizing the necessity of effective actor participation. The study uses text documents, Socio metric survey, and interviews with project actors and participants. This study employs both qualitative framework and social network analysis (SNA). While SNA looks at power dynamics and interactions between actors, the qualitative framework allows for a comprehensive evaluation of actor participation. The social network data was analyzed using an open source software called NodeXL. Results show that Bale eco-region REDD+ involves actors from different groups. Actors contribute to national strategies, funding, capacity building, and knowledge sharing. However, local communities have limited involvement in decision-making, lack knowledge sharing and capacity building. This hinders the implementation process and contributes to unequal power dynamics and lack the comprehensive input needed for effective and tailored strategies in the region. Calculated centrality values highlight a strong alliance among Ethiopia's national government entity overseeing REDD+ Environment, Forest and Climate Change Commission (EFCCC), and the regional entities Oromiya Forest and Wildlife Enterprise (OFWI), as well as Farm Africa, indicating significant institutional power across national and local levels. EFCCC holds influence in decision-making and strategy development, while OFWI wields substantial regional institutional power in information control and collaboration. Thus, climate policies must prioritize involvement of local communities in decision-making, capacity development, and resource accessibility. This helps to tackle power imbalances through collaborative governance structures. It also enables stakeholders to actively manage forests through imparting skills, knowledge and share benefits equally. Key Policy Insights: Implementing an inclusive, collaborative approach to governance of any REDD+ initiative creates the conditions for success through legitimate decision making and equitable. The African continent, renowned for its diverse landscapes and abundant biodiversity, grapples with a critical environmental challenge - deforestation. The swift depletion of forests, serving as the primary habitat for 80% of the world's terrestrial animals and plants, poses a severe threat in Africa. Human activities, including logging, agricultural expansion, and urbanization, have jeopardized numerous ecosystems, exacerbating the overarching global climate crisis. Beyond serving as mere collections of trees, forests are intricate ecosystems supporting a staggering diversity of flora and fauna. The repercussions of forest loss in Africa are profound, resulting in a significant decline in biodiversity. Numerous species, some exclusive to these ecosystems and found nowhere else on the planet, now teeter on the brink of extinction. The predicament of deforestation in Africa is intimately intertwined with the broader global challenge of climate change. Urgency is paramount in addressing this crisis, as the loss of forests impacts not only local ecosystems but also exacerbates the overarching climate emergency. Reforestation emerges as a pivotal solution, offering an opportunity to reverse the damage inflicted on these vital ecosystems. This study examines whether forest natural resources can explain the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis in African countries. The empirical strategy is based on the second-generation cointegration approach, cross-sectional dependency autoregressive distributed lag (CS-ARDL) and Augmented Mean Group (AMG) estimator. The findings show a potential long-run relationship between the forest rent and the environment. Further analysis highlights the importance of effective management of natural forest resources for improving environmental quality in Africa. We recommend that policymakers prioritize the restoration of ecosystems that have suffered carbon depletion due to human activities. Restoration efforts should strategically aim to enhance carbon sequestration capacity and rebuild biodiversity. Additionally, the establishment of robust monitoring and reporting systems is imperative to track current carbon emissions from forests. The management of forest pests relies on an accurate understanding of the species' phenology. Thermal performance curves (TPCs) have traditionally been used to model insect phenology. Many such models have been proposed and fitted to data from both wild and laboratory-reared populations. Using Hamiltonian Monte Carlo for estimation, we implement and fit an individual-level, Bayesian hierarchical model of insect development to the observed larval stage durations of a population reared in a laboratory at constant temperatures. This hierarchical model handles interval censoring and temperature transfers between two constant temperatures during rearing. It also incorporates individual variation, quadratic variation in development rates across insects' larval stages, and "flexibility" parameters that allow for deviations from a parametric TPC. Using a Bayesian method ensures a proper propagation of parameter uncertainty into predictions and provides insights into the model at hand. The model is applied to a population of eastern spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) reared at 7 constant temperatures. Resulting posterior distributions can be incorporated into a workflow that provides prediction intervals for the timing of life stages under different temperature regimes. Urban forestry programs across North America rely on volunteers to lead urban forest stewardship activities and encourage participation in tree planting and general maintenance. We examined the leadership structure of a tree planting initiative (TPI) in the greater Philadelphia region to understand the role and labor contributions of volunteer leaders, and the current challenges of achieving equitable urban tree canopy within community-led TPIs. Using an online survey, we found that leaders contribute unpaid labor, time, and skills within the following categories: group organization and communication, tree-planting and event coordination, tree care and maintenance, and broader environmental education and advocacy. Volunteer leaders also face challenges related to leadership and administrative tasks. This study deepens understandings of the labor needs within volunteer TPIs and potential ways to support the equitable growth of these initiatives moving forward. The punctuality of vessel arrival at port is a crucial issue in contemporary port operations. Uncertainties in vessel arrival can lead to port handling inefficiency and result in economic losses. Although vessels typically report their estimated time of arrival (ETA) en-route to the destination port, their actual time of arrival (ATA) often differs from the reported ETA due to various factors. To address this issue and enhance terminal operational efficiency, we first quantitatively evaluate vessel arrival uncertainty in different time slides prior to arrival at the port using 2021 vessel arrival data for Hong Kong port (HKP). Our results confirm that the overall vessel arrival uncertainty decreases as vessels approach the HKP. Then, we implement a random forest (RF) approach to predict vessel arrival time. Our model reduces the error in ship ATA data prediction by approximately 40% (from 25.5 h to 15.5 h) using the root mean squared error metric and 20% (from 13.8 h to 11.0 h) using the mean absolute error metric compared with the reported ETA data. The proposed vessel arrival time evaluation and prediction models are applicable to port management and operation, laying the foundation for future research on port daily operations. Spatially explicit global estimates of forest carbon storage are typically coarsely scaled. While useful, these estimates do not account for the variability and distribution of carbon at management scales. We asked how climate, topography, and disturbance regimes interact across and within geopolitical boundaries to influence tree biomass carbon, using the perhumid region of the Pacific Coastal Temperate Rainforest, an infrequently disturbed carbon dense landscape, as a test case. We leveraged permanent sample plots in southeast Alaska and coastal British Columbia and used multiple quantile regression forests and generalized linear models to estimate tree biomass carbon stocks and the effects of topography, climate, and disturbance regimes. We estimate tree biomass carbon stocks are either 211 (SD = 163) Mg C ha−1 or 218 (SD = 169) Mg C ha−1. Natural disturbance regimes had no correlation with tree biomass but logging decreased tree biomass carbon and the effect diminished with increasing time since logging. Despite accounting for 0.3% of global forest area, this forest stores between 0.63% and 1.07% of global aboveground forest carbon as aboveground live tree biomass. The disparate impact of logging and natural disturbance regimes on tree biomass carbon suggests a mismatch between current forest management and disturbance history. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied how management intensity and climate severity affect volume growth, timber yield, carbon stocks, and the amount of deadwood in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris (L.)), Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) dominated stands in the Republic of Karelia and Arkhangelsk region of northwest Russia. Using the forest ecosystem model (SIMA) under different climates (current and representative concentration pathway scenarios, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5), no-thinning, low, medium, and high intensity thinning rotational forestry regimes were simulated. Under RCPs, the volume growth and timber yield (5%–53%), carbon stocks (1%–22%), and deadwood amounts (11%–75%) increased for all Scots pine and silver birch stands. The use of low intensity management increased volume growth and carbon stocks (3%–16%) and deadwood amount (up to 60%) under RCPs, but not timber yield (±3%) in these stands. For Norway spruce stands, the volume growth (5%–26%), timber yield (23%–75%), and carbon stocks (5%–15%) decreased under RCP8.5, but deadwood amount increased (up to 142%). Intensive management increased volume growth (4%–19%), timber yield (4%–63%), carbon stocks (up to 14%), and deadwood amounts (up to 49%). Increasing summer temperatures and higher probabilities of extreme heat events have led to concerns about tree damage and mortality. However, insufficient attention has been given to conditions leading to heat-related regeneration failures in temperate forests. To address this, managers need to understand how microclimate varies under a range of overstory conditions. We measured air temperatures at 2 cm above-ground underneath a gradient of canopy cover on south-facing slopes in recently thinned Douglas-fir stands in western Oregon, USA. To expand the ecological relevance of these data to impacts on regeneration, we created the stress degree hours (SDH) metric, representing the amount of time—and by how much—temperatures exceeded biologically relevant stress thresholds. Overall, for every 10% increase in canopy cover, maximum temperatures at 2 cm were 1.3 °C lower, the odds of temperatures exceeding stress thresholds for conifer regeneration declined by a multiplicative factor of 0.26, and the total of SDH decreased by 40%. These reductions are large enough to be worthy of attention when managing for tree regeneration. However, data collected during the Pacific Northwest Heat Dome in June 2021 indicate that with various climate change scenarios and heatwave occurrences, temperatures will be unfavorable for regeneration regardless of overstory cover. The characteristics of pre-industrial forests provide reference states for forest restoration and sustainable management. This historical approach is particularly relevant in highly human-impacted regions where natural forests that could serve as references are scarce. This is the case in the Rouyn-Noranda region, located in western Quebec. In this study, we used available survey archives to reconstruct the pre-industrial composition of the mixed boreal forests in the Rouyn-Noranda region, located in western Quebec. With a new database comprising 3621 observations on historical forest composition (1909–1940), we provide an overview of the pre-industrial forests and subsequent changes in the region. In the pre-industrial era, spruces represented the most abundant species: they were present in 85.5% of the observations and were identified as dominant (i.e., the most abundant locally) in 63.9% of the observations. Spruces tended to be abundant across the entire territory and surface deposit types. Our results show an increase in the frequency of early successional deciduous species, primarily trembling aspen (+28%), between the pre-industrial and modern eras (1980–2020). These composition changes appear to be attributable to a combination of natural disturbances (fires) and human activities (logging, agriculture, etc.). Natural disturbance‐based management (NDBM) is hypothesized to maintain managed forest ecosystem integrity by reducing differences between natural and managed forests. The effectiveness of this approach often entails local comparisons of species composition or diversity for a variety of biota from managed and unmanaged forests. Understory vegetation is regularly the focus of such comparison because of its importance in nutrient cycling, forest regeneration, and for wildlife. However, larger scale comparisons between regions with distinct species assemblages may require a trait‐based approach to better understand understory responses to disturbance. We compared the long‐term effects of retention harvesting on understory vegetation in two large experimental study sites located in eastern and western regions of the Canadian boreal forest. These sites included the Sylviculture en Aménagement Forestier Ecosystémique (SAFE) experiment and the Ecosystem Management Emulating Natural Disturbance (EMEND) experiment, located in the eastern and western regions of Canada, respectively. EMEND and SAFE share common boreal understory species but have distinct tree communities, soils, and climate. Both experiments were designed to evaluate how increasing tree retention after harvest affects biodiversity. Here, we examined taxonomic richness, functional diversity, and functional composition (using community trait mean values) of understory plant communities, and also examine intraspecific trait variability (ITV) for five species common and abundant in both experiments. We observed the limited impacts of retention level on richness, functional diversity, and functional composition of understory plants 20 years postharvest. However, ITV of leaf morphological traits varied between retention levels within each experiment, depending on the species identity. Common species had different functional responses to retention level, showing species‐specific reactions to environmental variation. Our result suggests that understory plant communities in the boreal forest achieve resilience to disturbance both in terms of interspecific and intraspecific functional trait diversity. Such diversity may be key to maintaining understory biodiversity in the face of future disturbances and environmental change. Our results reveal the significance of ITV in plant communities for understanding responses to forest harvesting and the importance of choosing appropriate traits when studying species responses to the environment. Old-growth forests are essential to preserve biodiversity and play an important role in sequestering carbon and mitigating climate change. However, their existence across Europe is vulnerable due to the scarcity of their distribution, logging, and environmental threats. Remote sensing techniques have proven effective for mapping and monitoring forests over large areas. However, relying solely on remote sensing spectral or structural information cannot capture comprehensive horizontal and vertical structure complexity profiles associated with old-growth forest characteristics. To overcome this issue, we combined spectral information from Sentinel-2A multispectral imagery with 3D structural information from high-density point clouds of airborne laser scanning (ALS) imagery to map old-growth forests over an extended area. Four features from the ALS data and fifteen from Sentinel-2A comprising raw band (spectral reflectance), vegetation indices (VIs), and texture were selected to create three datasets used in the classification process using the random forest algorithm. The results demonstrated that combining ALS and Sentinel-2A features improved the classification performance and yielded the highest accuracy for old-growth class, with an F1-score of 92% and producer's and user's accuracies of 93% and 90%, respectively. The findings suggest that features from ALS and Sentinel-2A data sensitive to forest structure are essential for identifying old-growth forests. Integrating open-access satellite imageries, such as Sentinel-2A and ALS data, can benefit forest managers, stakeholders, and conservationists in monitoring old-growth forest preservation across a broader spatial extent. Spatial distribution and edaphic influences on soil organic carbon (SOC) are key determinants of carbon sequestration potential, and analysis of aggregate-protected SOC gives an in-depth understanding of the stability of carbon stored in soils. The present study evaluated the edaphic effects on the SOC in four different forest types—tropical evergreen forest, tropical moist deciduous forest, tropical dry deciduous forest and shola forest—in the southern high hills agro-ecological zone of Western Ghats, India. SOC stocks at depths of up to 1 m varied significantly across forest types, with the highest levels observed in the shola forest type (441.08 Mg C/ha) and the lowest in the dry deciduous forest (138.17 Mg C/ha). Around 70% of SOC was found in upper layers (0–30 cm) in all the studied forest types. Evaluation by a fixed-effect model showed that forest type, soil depth and aggregate size significantly affected SOC storage in these systems. An assessment of the relative importance and effect of 14 edaphic factors on SOC content in different forest types using the random forest model showed that the algorithm could explain 93.68%, 41.72%, 45.53% and 75.2% variability of SOC concentration across shola, dry deciduous, moist deciduous and evergreen systems, respectively. Across all forest types, except for dry deciduous forests, soil texture was found to be the primary factor influencing SOC, surpassing all other edaphic parameters. Ionic interactions by way of metal oxides like Ca2+, Al3+, Fe3+, Mg and H+ influenced the SOC in tropical forest systems. The insights into SOC dynamics and the edaphic factors regulating them offer valuable guidance for forest management in tropical regions, particularly regarding climate change mitigation. Root zone soil moisture (RZSM) is crucial for agricultural water management and land surface processes. The 1 km soil water index (SWI) dataset from Copernicus Global Land services, with eight fixed characteristic time lengths (T), requires root zone depth optimization (Topt) and is limited in use due to its low spatial resolution. To estimate RZSM at 100-m resolution, we integrate the depth specificity of SWI and employed random forest (RF) downscaling. Topographic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical datasets were utilized to develop three RF models (RF1: SAR, RF2: optical, RF3: SAR + optical). At the DEMMIN experimental site in northeastern Germany, Topt (in days) varies from 20 to 60 for depths of 10 to 30 cm, increasing to 100 for 40–60 cm. RF3 outperformed other models with 1 km test data. Following residual correction, all high-resolution predictions exhibited strong spatial accuracy (R ≥ 0.94). Both products (1 km and 100 m) agreed well with observed RZSM during summer but overestimated in winter. Mean R between observed RZSM and 1 km (100 m; RF1, RF2, and RF3) SWI ranges from 0.74 (0.67, 0.76, and 0.68) to 0.90 (0.88, 0.81, and 0.82), with the lowest and highest R achieved at 10 cm and 30 cm depths, respectively. The average RMSE using 1 km (100 m; RF1, RF2, and RF3) SWI increased from 2.20 Vol.% (2.28, 2.28, and 2.35) at 30 cm to 3.40 Vol.% (3.50, 3.70, and 3.60) at 60 cm. Context: A large body of literature has shown that forests provide nutritious foods in many low- and middle-income countries. Yet, there is limited evidence on the contributions from different types of forest and tree systems. Objectives: Here, we focus on individual trees and smaller forest patches outside established forest reserves as well as different forest management systems. Methods: We do so by combining novel high-resolution data on tree cover with 24-h dietary recall surveys from 465 women in Tanzania. Results: We show that people with more unclassified tree cover (i.e., individual trees and small forest patches) in their nearby surroundings have more adequate protein, iron, zinc, and vitamin A intakes. We also find that having a nearby forest under Participatory Forest Management (PFM) system is associated with higher adequacy levels of energy, iron, zinc and vitamin A. By contrast, tree cover within other types of forest (e.g., Government Forest Reserves and Government Forest Plantations) is not positively associated with people’s dietary quality. Conclusions: Our key finding is that having individual trees, smaller forest patches and/or forest under PFM in close proximity is more beneficial for people’s diets than other types of established forests. Our results highlight the nutritional importance of trees outside established forests and question the often-assumed benefits of forests if these are made inaccessible by social barriers (e.g., legislation). Heterobasidion root rot causes severe problems in the coniferous dominated forests of Northern hemisphere by decreasing timber value, reducing tree growth and making trees prone to other disturbance agents such as wind and bark beetles. According to current practices an infected stand is protected by treating fresh stumps at final cutting and generating the stand with tree species other than the host to reduce the current infection levels. However, prevailing guidelines do not provide instructions how to manage the neighbouring stands around the already infected stand. In contrast to earlier studies, we expand the analysis to an entity (a landscape) consisting of both infected and uninfected stands so that stand establishment of uninfected area is taken into account, too. The objective of the study is to optimize stand establishment of the uninfected area so that the revenue losses are simultaneously minimized when the average carbon storage is maximized within the whole landscape (infected + uninfected). Our results demonstrate the complexity of Heterobasidion root rot management: the optimum stand establishment strategy differs depending on the geographic location and interest rate (i.e., yield on capital). Further, the results implicate that for successful fight against Heterobasidion root rot the magnitude of infected area as well as the severity of the infection need to be taken into account. The global adoption of policies promoting sustainable forest management faces challenges, particularly in nations with predominantly privately-owned forests. To address this, there is growing support for fast-growing forest plantations. Typologies of private forest owners emerged worldwide as a tool to understand forest management practices and the engagement with promotion policies considering socio-economic variables, behavior, and perceptions of forest activities. This study aimed to identify fast-growing forest plantation owner types based on socioeconomic factors and assess if these types matched with different forest management practices and attitudes toward forest promotion policies in South America. Using a case of study in Argentina, we carried out surveys among Eucalyptus forest owners (n = 74). We categorized them based on their production activities, forest plantation area, and years in forestry using Principal Component Analysis and cluster analysis. Following, we associated these groups with forest management variables and national promotion policies using indicator species analysis. We delineated eight groups: Large, Small and Integrated Forest Owners; Longstanding and New Agricultural-cattle ranching Forest Owners; Large and Small multi productive Forest Owners; and Citrus Forest Owners. Extra-forest productive activities emerged as the most influential variable in constructing our typology. Larger groups tended to exhibit significant associations with innovative management practices, while smaller groups did not. Longstanding forest owners favored maintaining traditional practices, whereas new recommendations were adopted primarily by newer owners. Overall, there was a general trend, but some groups exhibited non-linear associations, suggesting a combined effect of producer size, experience on forestry and productive culture. The relationship between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and secondary vegetation (SV) species at early phenological stages is critical for the successful establishment of these plants on disturbance sites in temperate forests. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the effect of AMF colonization on the early phenological stages (germination and early growth) of three shrub species present in the SV of a temperate forest in central Mexico. We collected soil from different sites in the Abies religiosa forest in central Mexico. We collected seeds of Acaena elongata, Ageratina glabrata, and Solanum pubigerum. We used a controlled experimental design with pasteurized soil (-AMF treatments) and unpasteurized soil (+ AMF treatments). We monitored germination percentage, growth (shoot and root weight and total biomass), AMF root colonization, and the mycorrhizal response index (MRI) for each plant species. All three species tested benefited by AMF, showing higher germination rates. Shoot and root weight and total biomass were significantly higher in the + AMF treatment. Solanum pubigerum showed greater stem length and Ageratina glabrata showed greater root development due to AMF. Ageratina glabrata and Acaena elongata were the most responsive to AMF as indicated by MRI. This research underscores the critical role of AMF in the early phenological stages of SV and highlights the potential ecological benefits of AMF in supporting plant germination and plant growth. AbstractLichens are well-known bioindicators and exhibit high sensitivity to environmental changes due to their unique biological characteristics. Despite their ecological significance, lichens are often overlooked in conservation policies both at the European Union (EU) and global levels. The situation is better at the level of national Red Lists that can provide candidate species for regional or global Red Lists, thereby helping to prioritize conservation efforts. To fill a gap at the national level, this article presents the comprehensive data of the Red List of Latvian lichens. For the first time, IUCN threat categories and criteria were applied to assess 85 lichenized and one lichenicolous fungus during 2022–2023. Of these species, 3 were classified as Least Concern (LC), 2 as Data Deficient (DD), 11 as Near Threatened (NT), and 68 were ascribed the threatened categories: 14 to Vulnerable (VU), 27 to Endangered (EN), 27 to Critically Endangered (CR). The majority of Latvian lichens categorized as threatened or near threatened inhabit woodlands, particularly old-growth forests, which face the primary threat of intensive forest management. This article emphasizes the importance of continued evaluation efforts, while also addressing challenges associated with data scarcity and limited lichenological research capacity in Latvia. Background: Castanea sativa Mill. is important for ecosystems and societies. Its rich historical and cultural significance, remarkable ecological contributions, and diverse applications have inspired scientific research. This comprehensive review and conceptual mapping of chestnut research consolidates existing knowledge, identifies emerging trends, and highlights untapped potential to inform future investigations. First, the Scopus database was searched to retrieve all data-driven articles in English related to C. sativa published in English from 1951 to 2023. Second, the R language, Scopus Analytics, and VOSviewer were used to analyze the year of publication, authors, countries, affiliations, keywords, and citations. Finally, network analysis was performed to evaluate the hotspots and developmental trends of C. sativa. A total of 1889 research articles were recovered. Results: The articles showed an exponential progression, with a regression coefficient of 0.9435 (R2) and an annual growth rate of 6.28%. Italy (19.87%), Spain (15.56%), Portugal (13.39%), Turkey (6.92%), and Switzerland (5.17%) were the most prolific countries. C. sativa (798), sweet chestnut (54), cryphonectria parasitica (44), honey (38), phenolic compounds (35), chestnut blight (33) and antioxidant activity (31) are the keywords that occur the most frequently. The main research groups in the thematic map are "forest management," "Cryphonectria parasitica," "wood," "Spain" and "ethnobotany." Research on C. sativa has all the basic, motor, niche, and emerging or declining themes. Forest management, drought, Gnomoniopsis smithogilvyi, C. sativa shells, amino acids, honey, phenolic compounds, hydrolyzable tannins, antioxidant capacity, antioxidants, and extractives are trending topics. Conclusions: This bibliometric analysis highlights the importance of C. sativa research, revealing its ecological contributions, cultural significance, and diverse applications. Nothofagus antarctica (G.Forst.) Oerst. (Ñire) leaves are a valuable source of (poly)phenolic compounds and represent a high-value non-timber product from Patagonian forests. However, information on the variability of their chemical profile is limited or non-existent. The aim of this study was to evaluate the (poly)phenolic variability in Ñire leaf infusions. To this end, different tree populations growing under different temperature regimes and soil characteristics were considered. Interestingly, a cup of Ñire leaf infusion could be considered as a rich source of quercetin. Significant differences in the (poly)phenolic content, especially in flavonoid conjugates and cinnamic acids, were found among the populations studied. These results suggest metabolic variability among the forests studied, which could be related to the species response to its growing conditions, and also provide some clues about the performance of N. antarctica under future climate scenarios. The N. antarctica forests growing in environments with lower frequency of cold and heat stress and high soil fertility showed better infusion quality. This study showed how a South American beech interacts with its local environment at the level of secondary metabolism. Introduction: Since 1990, there has been a global decline in forest areas. Between 2010 and 2020, the greatest annual net loss of forests was on the African continent. Despite South African indigenous forests and trees being protected under the National Forests Act of 1998 (Act No. 84 of 1998), the country has also shown an increased annual net loss of forests. Although the Vhembe District Municipality in South Africa has lost forest owing to humaninduced deforestation and other land use activities, sacred forests have not been affected. According to traditional beliefs, exploitation of such indigenous patches of sacred forests is taboo. This study aims to explore the role of taboos in the protection of the remaining patches of sacred forest. Methods: The study relies on data collected between December 2022 and December 2023. Semi-structured interviewswere conductedwith key informants (n = 61) and local communities in Tshidzivhe and Duthuni villages (n = 60). Observations were used as a further data collection tool. The interview questions were prepared to assess the role of taboos in the protection and management of sacred forests. Data collected through interviews were analysed using thematic content analysis, while field observations helped to corroborate the results from the interviews. Results and discussion: The study identified two main taboos - one that restricts entry into the sacred forests (i.e. preventing entry into the sacred forests, and harvesting, hunting and hiking in these areas), and another that prohibits noise or activities that disrespect sacred forests. The study found that believers and nonbelievers alike, for fear of retribution by the spirits, still obey these taboos and their relatedmyths. This has allowed these areas to develop dense stands of closed-canopy evergreen forest that support more diverse flora and fauna than found in surrounding areas. Although sacred forests are not meant for biodiversity conservation, they offer opportunities to be integrated into global conservation targets of "30x30" and "Half-Earth" by 2030. They also offer the opportunity of serving as carbon sinks which is key to climate change mitigation. Introduction: The Indian Himalayan forests are remarkable landforms experiencing tremendous climatic variation, constituting complex and diversified ecosystems with prominent vegetation zones. Despite their global significance and substantial research efforts focused on plant diversity in the temperate Himalayan region, only a few studies have explicitly assessed the distribution patterns of understory vegetation in relation to forest compositional types along altitudinal gradients. Methods: To cover a wide range of altitudes and diverse overstory compositions, stands were sampled across four altitudinal ranges from 1500 to 3500 meters above mean sea level with increments of 500 meters in elevation steps. The overstory compositions were classified on the basis of dominant tree species in each stand on the similar sites. Vegetation in the shrub and ground layers was surveyed by visually estimating the percentage coverage within circular plots. Results: A total of 99 understory species including 37 species each in the shrub layer, 62 species in the herb layer vegetation were recorded. The abundance, species diversity and composition of understory vegetation differed significantly along the altitudinal gradient and dominant overstory composition types. Moreover, distinct understory vegetation communities were observed at lower elevations compared to higher elevations, with middle elevations exhibiting intermediate vegetation characteristics. The study also highlighted the importance of dominant overstory composition types in shaping the pattern of understory vegetation abundance, species diversity and composition in the temperate Himalayan region. The higher resource conditions associated with broadleaved stands supported higher understory species abundance at lower elevations, while the heterogeneous conditions induced by the mixedwood stands promoted higher understory species diversity. Conclusion: The hump shaped pattern along the altitudinal gradient appeared to be the most dominant pattern of plant abundance and species diversity and call for more conservation concern towards the middle elevation zones in the temperate Himalayan region. Furthermore, the management interventions should aim at maintaining diverse range of overstory composition types for conserving biodiversity and their ecological functions in the temperate Himalayan region.
