Most power transformers are oil-immersed transformers for which its insulation system consists of oil and cellulosic solid. The insulation liquid impregnates the solid-covering air spaces, which improves the efficiency of the insulation system. Not only does the oil ensure electrical insulation but it also works as coolants transferring the heat generated during transformer operation to the exterior of the transformer. Throughout normal operation conditions, transformers experience multiple stresses that degrade their insulation. Since the lifetime of oil-immersed transformers is defined mainly by the state of the insulation paper, it is critical to understand the behavior and degradation mechanisms of new insulation systems that try to overcome the drawbacks of mineral oil as well as to improve power transformer performances. The current increased prevalence of the nonlinear loads additionally stresses power transformers, which generates their premature ageing or even failure. Consequently, new materials and assessment methods are required to guarantee the suitable management of power transformer populations. In this Special Issue "Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Thermal Ageing in Power Transformers", four papers have been published. A post mortem analysis of scrapped transformers provides an opportunity to directly measure the properties of in-service aged paper insulation. Investigations on 10 scrapped 275 kV and 400 kV power transformers were carried out, where Tensile Index (TI) and Low Molecular Weight Acid (LMA) of the paper insulation sampled from various locations were measured. Multiple-layer TI profile demonstrated the effect of oxidized oil on paper ageing which was confirmed by laboratory ageing experiments. It is LMA rather than High Molecular Weight Acid (HMA) that accelerates the paper degradation. LMA acts as the paper ageing accelerator and also as the paper degradation by-product, supporting the view that self-accelerated hydrolysis process is the main paper ageing mechanism. Finally, a generic relationship between LMA in paper and TI of paper was revealed based on both in-service and laboratory ageing data, i.e. the lower the TI of paper, the higher value of LMA in paper is measured. It implies that LMA in oil can be a potential paper ageing indicator pro viding a link between LMA in oil and paper is found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Utility asset managers and engineers are concerned about the life and reliability of their power transformers which depends on the continued life of the paper insulation. The ageing rate of the paper is affected by water, oxygen and acids. Traditionally, the ageing rate of paper has been studied in sealed vessels however this approach does not allow the possibility to assess the affect of oxygen on paper with different water content. The ageing rate of paper has been studied for dry paper in air (excess oxygen). In these experiments we studied the ageing rate of Kraft and thermally upgraded Kraft paper in medium and high oxygen with varying water content. Furthermore, the oxygen content of the oil in sealed vessels is low which represents only sealed transformers. The ageing rate of the paper has not been determined for free breathing transformers with medium or high oxygen content and for different wetness of paper. In these ageing experiments the water and oxygen content was controlled using a special test rig to compare the ageing rate to previous work and to determine the ageing effect of paper by combining temperature, water content of paper and oxygen content of the oil. We found that the ageing rate of paper with the same water content increased with oxygen content in the oil. Managing a large fleet of ageing assets has become a technical challenge faced by many electricity utilities in developed countries. Asset managers are increasingly interested in techniques that can help extend the useful lifetime of a transformer. Oil regeneration is one of such techniques. In this paper, oil regeneration experiments were performed on a 6.4/0.4 kV retired distribution transformer to investigate the effect of oil regeneration on improving paper conditions. Oil regeneration was conducted in two stages, with the first stage aimed at 'cleaning the oil' and the second stage targeted at 'cleaning the paper'. Oil samples were collected at regular intervals throughout the process and paper samples were obtained from the transformer before and after each oil regeneration stage. It was found that oil regeneration restores oil parameters, including moisture and acidity, similar to those of new oils at the end of stage 1. Analysis of paper samples indicated a reduction in paper moisture at the end of stage 2 by nearly 40%, while low molecular weight acids (LMA) in paper exhibited a reduction by around 30% on average. It is found that the extended oil regeneration period, i.e., stage 2, is necessary to improve the paper condition and hence to reduce the paper ageing rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
