Background and objective: End‐stage renal disease (ESRD) affects a multitude of aspects in the patient's daily life, often entailing their own involvement in various aspects of the treatment. Although patient participation is a core health‐care value, what the concept signifies is not yet fully known. The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize patient participation in dialysis care, depicting patients' and health‐care professionals' perspectives. Design: This explorative study employed qualitative interviews and content analysis. Setting and participants: Seven focus group discussions engaging 42 key informants were performed, including patients, staff and managers with experience of dialysis care. Results: In dialysis care, patient participation connotes a sharing of information and knowledge, the learning of and planning of care, including partaking in shared decisions with regards to treatment and management, and being involved in the management of one's own health‐care treatment and/or self‐care activities. Although these attributes were illustrated by all stakeholders, their significance varied: patients suggested that their preferences regarding primary aspects of participation vary, while staff considered patients' performance of dialysis to be the ultimate form of participation. Further, while patients considered multiple ways to execute participation, staff suggested that aspects such as sharing information were a route to, rather than actual, involvement. Conclusions: Without a common understanding to denote the idea of patient participation, staff and patients are exposed to a potential deficit in terms of facilitating patient participation in everyday encounters of dialysis treatment. Advances in high‐throughput sequencing technologies have allowed for a rapid increase in knowledge about the human microbiome in both healthy and diseased states, which is expected to increase our understanding of multifactorial diseases. The World Workshop on Oral Medicine VII chose the microbiome as one of its topics of focus. Part 1 of this review provides updated knowledge in the field of microbiome research, describes the advantages and disadvantages of currently available sequencing technologies, and proposes a seven‐step "recipe" for designing and performing studies that is supported by contemporary evidence. Part 2 of this review in a companion paper discusses the results of high‐throughput sequencing studies published to date on the microbiota associated with oral mucosal diseases. The goal of this collective enterprise is to encourage more oral medicine specialists to become engaged in multidisciplinary collaborations to investigate the role of the microbiome in relation to oral diseases, which could potentially lead to enhanced diagnosis, risk assessment and treatment of these patients. The present paper reports on a 5-year follow-up of a randomized reading intervention in grade 3 in Sweden. An intervention group (n = 57) received daily training for 12 weeks in phoneme/grapheme mapping, reading comprehension and reading speed, whereas a control group (n = 55) participated in ordinary classroom activities. The main aim was to investigate if there were remaining effects of the intervention on reading-related skills. Previous analyses showed that the intervention group performed significantly better than the control group on spelling, reading speed, reading comprehension and phoneme awareness at the immediate post-test with sustained effects 1 year later. Results from the 5-year follow-up show that the only significant difference between the intervention (n = 47) and the control group (n = 37) was on word decoding. There was also a significant interaction effect of group assignment and initial word decoding, in the way that the lowest-performing students benefitted the most from the intervention. Another aim was to examine if the children identified in a screening (n = 2212) as poor readers in grade 2 still performed worse than typical readers. The analyses showed that the typically developing students (n = 66) outperformed the students identified as poor readers in grade 2 on working memory, spelling, reading comprehension and word decoding. Background: This paper describes the background, aim and study design for the Swedish SELMA study that aimed to investigate the importance of early life exposure during pregnancy and infancy to environmental factors with a major focus on endocrine disrupting chemicals for multiple chronic diseases/disorders in offspring. Methods: The cohort was established by recruiting women in the 10th week of pregnancy. Blood and urine from the pregnant women and the child and air and dust from home environment from pregnancy and infancy period have been collected. Questionnaires were used to collect information on life styles, socio-economic status, living conditions, diet and medical history. Results: Of the 8394 reported pregnant women, 6658 were invited to participate in the study. Among the invited women, 2582 (39%) agreed to participate. Of the 4076 (61%) non-participants, 2091 women were invited to a non-respondent questionnaire in order to examine possible selection bias. We found a self-selection bias in the established cohort when compared with the non-participant group, e.g. participating families did smoke less (14% vs. 19%), had more frequent asthma and allergy symptoms in the family (58% vs. 38%), as well as higher education among the mothers (51% vs. 36%) and more often lived in single-family houses (67% vs. 60%). Conclusions: These findings indicate that the participating families do not fully represent the study population and thus, the exposure in this population. Background: Nils Rosén von Rosenstein (1706-1773) was a Swedish nobleman and a professor at Uppsala University. His series of lectures on children's diseases and their treatment was published in 1764 under the title Underrättelser om Barn-Sjukdomar och Deras Bote-Medel.Materials and Methods: Rosén von Rosenstein's book was translated into several languages. The present paper deals with the opinions and advice proffered on the jaundiced neonate in chapter 25 of the Danish edition from 1769.Results: The distinction between jaundice in the neonate and jaundice in older children is not clear everywhere in the chapter, and much of Rosén von Rosenstein's advice on therapy appears to be intended for all age groups. Rosén von Rosenstein believed that neonatal jaundice was less common in Sweden than elsewhere, and ascribed this to the common practice of purging newborns with a manna sugar laxative. The principal cause of jaundice, according to Rosén von Rosenstein, was bile stasis. When milk curdled in the stomach, the curds could plug the common bile duct, and bile would be forced into the lymphatics and from there into the blood. Thus, the bile was carried around the body and caused the skin and the sclera, as well as other organs, to become yellow. Cure was usually easy-a laxative in the form of puréed manna with powdered rhubarb was what Rosén von Rosenstein recommended.Conclusion: Rosén von Rosenstein's opinions and advice concerning neonatal jaundice were not original, and did not differ from those found in other medical texts from the 18th and 19th centuries. The bile stasis explanation for all kinds of jaundice, including neonatal jaundice, was widely held in the 18th century, and continued to predominate in paediatric texts until the end of the 19th century. The only form of haemophilia treatment that is able to prevent arthropathy and other consequences of bleeding symptoms in patients with severe haemophilia is prophylaxis started at an early age (primary prophylaxis). It is also highly beneficial for the psychological and social wellbeing of patients and their families. Scientific institutions and international organizations such as WHO, the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) and the National Haemophilia Foundation (NHF) have recommended that prophylaxis be considered optimum therapy. This paper discusses the barriers to prophylaxis, such as the perceived need, costs and availability, and difficulty of venous access, and describes the authors' experiences with the therapy.
