In 1976, the Supreme Court of California issued its well‐known Tarasoff Principle. From this principle, other courts found a duty to warn, and some found more than just a duty to warn, a duty to protect. As courts in other states adopted a version of the Tarasoff Principle, they issued a wide variety of third‐party liability rules. In light of the dynamic, everchanging Tarasoff jurisprudence in the United States and recent relevant appellate court opinion in Missouri, a timely updated summary and update of Tarasoff‐related jurisprudence in Missouri is warranted. In the present analysis, we compiled the four appellate court decisions that pertained to the questions of Tarasoff‐like third‐party liability in the State of Missouri: Sherrill v. Wilson (1983), Matt v. Burrell (1995), Bradley v. Ray (1995), and Virgin v. Hopewell (2001). We reviewed all legal measures for clinicians to protect nonpatients in Missouri, not just those that relate to protecting nonpatients from violence as in a Tarasof‐like scenario. Thus, this paper concisely provides a compendium of such options and allows for a meaningful comparison of which legal, protective measures are mandatory and which are permissive, thereby evoking the question of whether measures of protecting nonpatients from a patient's violent acts ought to be mandatory duties or permissive application of professional judgment. Visitation in prison is associated with a low recidivism rate after release, but the causality is not clear. This paper tries to estimate the effect of visitation experience on the recidivism outcome of state prisoners in Missouri, using an instrumental variable approach. The instrumental variable used for identification is the distance from a prison to an address before incarceration. The results support that visitation has a causal effect on recidivism in the short run. Further analysis shows that employment is an important channel of the visitation effect. Purpose: Opioid overdose death rates rose 36% from 2015 to 2016 in Missouri, indicating a worsening of the opioid overdose epidemic. To better understand urban and rural differences in nonfatal opioid overdoses treated in Missouri emergency departments, this paper analyzed hospital billing data from emergency departments due to opioid overdose from 2012 to 2016. Methods: Emergency department records meeting the opioid overdose case definition were aggregated into 6 progressively rural groups using the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) urban‐rural county classification from 2013. These data were analyzed to determine significant trends amongst and between the geographic groups. Findings: Generally, the magnitude of opioid overdose morbidity decreased as levels of rurality increased, using annual percentage change as the metric of change. Over the study period, Missouri's most urban counties had significantly higher rates of opioid overdose and saw larger percentage increases in rates compared to more rural areas. Statewide, all rural‐urban classifications experienced increases in heroin overdose morbidity; however, there was extreme variation in the trajectory of those increases. Heroin overdose rates were much higher in urban areas than rural areas. Conversely, rural and urban areas saw relatively similar patterns for non‐heroin opioid overdoses, though overall magnitude of these increases was more modest across all geographic groups. Conclusions: The results from this analysis can help inform prioritization of strategies and resources to implement activities addressing the opioid overdose epidemic. The hellbender Cryptobranchus alleganiensis is an endangered aquatic salamander inhabiting coldwater streams within the Ozark Highlands of Missouri. Over the past few decades, there has been a severe decline in the populations of the two subspecies of hellbender in this region—the Eastern hellbender C. a. alleganiensis and the Ozark hellbender C. a. bishopi—accompanied by little to no recruitment of young age‐classes; projections now call for negative long‐term population growth for both subspecies. Captive propagation is thus considered essential for the long‐term recovery of this species in Missouri, along with addressing the causes for its decline in the wild. Since 2007, Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery has been the primary rearing facility in Missouri for the early life stages of Eastern hellbenders. This facility has focused on hatching fertilized eggs collected from the wild and rearing animals for repatriation into their natal streams. Restoring native grassland vegetation can substantially improve ecosystem service outcomes from agricultural watersheds, but profitable pathways are needed to incentivize conversion from conventional crops. Given growing demand for renewable energy, using grassy biomass to produce biofuels provides a potential solution. We assessed the techno‐economic feasibility and life cycle outcomes of a "grass‐to‐gas" pathway that includes harvesting grassy (lignocellulosic) biomass for renewable natural gas (RNG) production through anaerobic digestion (AD), expanding on previous research that quantified ecosystem service and landowner financial outcomes of simulated grassland restoration in the Grand River Basin of Iowa and Missouri, United States. We found that the amount of RNG produced through AD of grassy biomass ranged 0.12–45.04 million gigajoules (GJ), and the net present value (NPV) of the RNG ranged −$97 to $422 million, depending on the combination of land use, productivity, and environmental credit scenarios. Positive NPVs are achieved with environmental credits for replacement of synthetic agricultural inputs with digestate and clean fuel production (e.g., USEPA D3 Renewable Identification Number, California Low Carbon Fuel Standard). Producing RNG from grassy biomass emits 15.1 g CO2‐eq/MJ, which compares favorably to the fossil natural gas value of 61.1 g CO2‐eq/MJ and exceeds the US Environmental Protection Agency's requirement for cellulosic biofuel. Phosphorus (P) can be recovered from wastewater and used as an alternative fertilizer, namely, struvite [MgNH4PO4·6(H2O)]. However, the soil mobility of wastewater‐derived P and other nutrients needs to be evaluated. The objective of this study was to compare the vertical distribution of water‐soluble (WS) soil P and other nutrients from a synthetic‐wastewater‐derived electrochemically precipitated struvite (ECST) to that from a chemically precipitated struvite (CPST), triple superphosphate (TSP), monoammonium phosphate (MAP), and a control in six soils from Arkansas (AR; loam [L] and silt loam [SiL]), Missouri (MO; SiL 1 and SiL 2), and Nebraska (NE; sandy loam [SL] and SiL). A column‐leaching experiment was conducted with the six soils and five fertilizer‐P treatments. Water‐soluble (WS) P from the two struvite materials generally did not differ (p > 0.05) and was similar to that of MAP in the depths of 0–3, 3–6, and 6–10 cm, but was greater than that of TSP in the top 6 cm in four of the six soils. WS P from CPST in the MO‐SiL 2 and NE‐SL soils (6.6 and 12.7 mg kg−1, respectively) was larger than that from ECST, MAP, and TSP. In the AR‐L and MO‐SiL 1 soils, TSP was the only fertilizer‐P source that had increased WS P concentrations in the top 6 cm relative to the other fertilizer‐P sources. Results showed that ECST‐derived, WS P had similar soil profile distributions in the top 10 cm, suggesting that ECST will be equally protective of environmental health and leachate quality across multiple soil textures as other common fertilizer‐P sources. Background and aims Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) programs have been implemented widely in medical settings, with little attention focused on how well providers adhere to evidence-based service delivery in everyday practice. The purposes of this paper were to: (1) introduce a flexible, relatively simple methodology, the SBIRT Checklist for Observation in Real-time (SCORe), to assess adherence to evidence-based practice and provide preliminary evidence supporting its criterion validity; and (2) illustrate the feasibility and potential utility of the SCORe by analyzing observations of providers within four large-scale SBIRT programs in the United States. Methods Eighteen potential adherence judges were trained to recognize SBIRT service elements presented in realistic taped portrayals constructed to serve as criterion coding standards. Across the four SBIRT programs, 76 providers were observed performing 388 services in three types of medical settings; emergency departments ( n = 10), hospital out-patient/ambulatory clinics ( n = 16) and hospital in-patient settings ( n = 5). Results Across two exercises, trainees identified 81% of screening and 75% of brief intervention (BI) elements correctly; for the six FRAMES components (Feedback, Responsibility, Advice, Menu of options, Empathy, Self-efficacy), agreement ranged from 69% to 91%. Across programs, 56% of screening, 54% of brief intervention (BI) (81% of FRAMES) and 53% of referral to treatment elements were observed. Programs differed significantly in adherence [screening, P = 0.024; BI, P < 0.001; FRAMES, P < 0.001; referral to treatment (RT), P < 0.001]; medical setting differences were minimal. Conclusions The Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment Checklist for Observation in Real-time provides a flexible method for assessing adherence to evidence-based Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment service protocols. Phosphate‐rich struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) can be reclaimed from wastewater as a fertilizer material to help provide clean water and sustainable food production. The objective of this study was to evaluate the leaching characteristics of wastewater‐recovered electrochemically precipitated struvite (ECST) compared to other common fertilizer‐P sources in soils from Arkansas (AR loam and silt loam), Missouri (MO silt loam 1 and 2), and Nebraska (NE sandy loam and silt loam). A bench‐scale, soil‐column experiment was conducted using five fertilizer‐P sources (i.e., ECST, chemically precipitated struvite [CPST], monoammonium phosphate [MAP], triple superphosphate [TSP], and an unamended control [UC]) and leached six times over 15 weeks after fertilizer application. Leachate‐P concentration changes from the UC differed among soil–fertilizer combinations over time (p < 0.05) but only in the AR‐loam, where TSP (2.0–6.6 mg L−1) consistently had a larger leachate‐P change from the UC than ECST (−0.04 to 3.1 mg L−1) in weeks 1–3. Leachate‐NO3‐N concentration changes from the UC among soils occurred only in week 1, where three of the six soils had NO3‐N concentration increases >10.7 mg L−1 from their respective UC. Though inconsistent across the various soils evaluated, P‐leaching losses relative to respective UC treatments were often larger from MAP and TSP than ECST and CPST. Results showed that P, NH4‐N, NO3‐N, Ca, Mg, and Fe leaching potentials differed among soils depending on initial soil pH and texture and fertilizer‐P source; thus, soil characteristics and fertilizer‐P source should be considered to minimize potential nutrient leaching losses. Background: Children are amongst the most susceptible groups to environmental exposures, for both immediate and life‐course health outcomes. Despite their increased susceptibility, children's knowledge, experiences and voices are understudied. A deeper understanding of children's environmental health perceptions has the potential to better inform policy, develop targeted interventions and improve public health outcomes. Methods: In this study, our community–academic partnership used the Photovoice research method to examine how urban children from low‐income communities perceive environmental influences on their health. Twenty children, ages 10–12, took photographs and participated in focus group interviews regarding their perspectives on how the environment influences their health. Results: Qualitative analyses revealed five major thematic categories: environmental exposures, environmental health sentiments, environmental health outcomes, interest in environmental health and environmental health solutions. We used the findings to develop an environmental health perspective theoretical framework that can inform future work designed to promote the environmental health and well‐being of children from low‐income communities in urban communities. Conclusion: Photovoice enabled children from low‐income communities to capture and communicate their environmental health perceptions. These findings have the potential to inform and identify potential targets and opportunities for environmental health interventions and promotion in their communities. Using filing‐level data, we compute the average marginal income tax rate for the State of Missouri. We have data from 2000 through 2015. We start with a simple experiment: consider the effect that a $10 change in federal adjusted gross income would have on each filer's tax payment. We find that with deductions, exemptions, and credits, the average marginal income tax rate has been remarkably steady over the years, ranging from 3.50% to 3.66%. This rate is much lower than the top marginal income tax rate, which has been 6% for taxable income greater than $9,000 for the entire sample period. In addition, we compute the average marginal income tax rate for different types of income in order to compare directly with the NBER's reported state rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

R14‐1422 (Reg. no. GP‐523, PI 702562) is a mid‐maturity group (MG) V (relative maturity 5.4), determinate growth habit, high‐yielding, conventional soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] germplasm line developed and released in 2021 by the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station. R14‐1422 is an F4 selection from the cross between 'R06‐4433', a cultivar released by Arkansas, and the Missouri cultivar 'S05‐11482'. Trial results of over 74 environments in Arkansas and other southern states showed that R14‐1422 is well adapted and provides high‐yielding performance. R14‐1422 is a MG V (5.4), line with determinate growth habit, white flowers, gray pubescence, and a tan pod wall at maturity. Seed of R14‐1422 has yellow cotyledon, yellow seed coat, and buff hilum color. R14‐1422 has high yield potential and moderate resistance to southern root‐knot nematode and is a chloride excluder. Intersectionality, the theory named by Kimberlé Crenshaw, outlines how multiple elements of an individual's social identity overlap to create and preserve societal inequalities and discrimination. Recently bioarchaeology's engagement with intersectionality has become increasingly explicit, as the field recognizes the lived experience of multiple axes of an individual's identity. Evidence of trauma can remain observable in an individual's skeleton for years, making it an ideal subject of study for intersectional analyses in bioarchaeology. Using contrasting case studies of two individuals who died in hospitals and were unclaimed after death, we explore the theoretical and methodological application of intersectionality to investigations of accidental and interpersonal trauma. Differences in identities and structural inequalities affect bone quality and health outcomes. As we demonstrate, a broken bone is the intersecting result of biological, histomorphological, sociocultural, and behavioral factors. This approach allows for a better acknowledgement of the inherent complexity of past lives, elevating and amplifying previously silenced voices. The global decline of reptile species has raised much concern, and many translocation programs have been implemented in response to this decline. Most of these programs have not been successful, but one exception is the translocation program for eastern collared lizards (Crotophytus collaris collaris) that had experienced massive local extinction on glades in the Ozarks in central North America. Translocation coupled with glade restoration was initiated in the 1980s, including reintroductions starting in 1984 on Stegall Mountain in southern Missouri. The translocated populations underwent three distinct demographic phases: (1) an isolate phase with no net growth in population size, no colonization of nearby glades and almost no dispersal among populations, (2) a colonizing phase of high dispersal, colonization of new glades and population growth that started with the onset of prescribed woodland burning and (3) a stable metapopulation phase established by 2000 on Stegall Mountain in which the number of occupied glades, total population size and measures of genetic variation were roughly constant. This study uses distinct color phases to infer the age of 1162 marked individuals. Age probabilities were assigned to 391 individuals based on time‐of‐capture within the field season and snout‐vent length, as calibrated from following 529 individuals first captured as hatchlings. Age structure differed significantly between phases. The isolate phase was characterized by an old age structure. The colonization phase had a younger age structure and much more recruitment. The stable metapopulation phase had an intermediate age structure. These dynamic age structure attributes show that species cannot be regarded as static units, and ignoring this dynamism can result in poor conservation practice. These results also validate age‐structure as a monitoring device for a conservation program and a tool to identify significant shifts in the environment or management that have a conservation impact, in this case prescribed woodland burning. Managing landscapes for migratory species is challenging when migratory movement patterns are unknown. Researchers have collected sufficient data to understand summer and winter habitat use for federally listed bats, but movement between these habitats in spring and fall has not been studied extensively. In addition, movement within summer habitat is less well understood than the roosting requirements. To initiate a preliminary understanding of movement patterns of gray bats (Myotis grisescens), we gathered all occurrence and band recovery data available within the range of the species to model movement. By weighting the pathways using the population of winter and summer locations (i.e., cave roosts), we created a heat map demonstrating the likelihood of landscape use by gray bats including nightly foraging, migration, and roost switching. The resulting map highlighted 2 major areas of use during spring and fall migration: 3 high likelihood pathways through central Tennessee and 1 primary migration route between northern Arkansas and central Missouri, USA. Although future data could influence the accuracy of this map, the representation in its current form can be used to anticipate bat presence when considering industrial development such as wind turbine siting. Using administrative records from Missouri, we investigate the characteristics of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants aged 60 and older who experience administrative churn. Among these adults, one in four experienced administrative churn, and one in five experienced more than one spell of churn. Risk of churn, frequency, duration of churn spells, and the value of foregone SNAP benefits varied with individual, household, and geographic characteristics, and was more common among non‐Whites, members of larger households, and those living in urban areas. Objectives: Much of reproductive health care policy in the United States focuses on enabling women to have intended pregnancies. Investigating whether the association between pregnancy intention and adverse outcomes for mothers and children in the immediate and longer term is due to intention or a mother's demographics provides valuable context for policy makers aiming to improve maternal and child outcomes. Methods: We investigated relationships between pregnancy intention and pregnancy, infant, early childhood, and maternal outcomes using data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System survey, conducted 2–8 months after the child's birth, and follow‐up surveys from three states (Alaska, Missouri, and Oklahoma), administered at age 2–3 years old. We used logistic regressions with inverse propensity weights to measure associations, accounting for potential confounding factors. Results: After inverse propensity weighting, pregnancy intention was associated with adverse maternal pregnancy behaviors but not most infant outcomes. Mothers who reported an unwanted pregnancy were associated with increased odds of the child receiving a developmental delay diagnosis. Among those who did not report depression prior to pregnancy, mothers with unwanted pregnancies were more likely to experience persistent depression, and mothers with pregnancies mistimed by two or more years had a higher likelihood of experiencing depression postpartum or in the follow up period. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that pregnancy intention is less consequential for maternal and child well‐being than socio‐economic disadvantage, suggesting that re‐orienting policy toward social conditions and reproductive autonomy will serve better individual and population health. Environmental regulators use No Net Loss policies to minimize the damaging impacts of development projects on water resources. In this context, regulators prefer standard environmental assessment protocols over ad hoc approaches. This article examines how the St. Louis District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (the Corps) directed the development of statewide standard stream mitigation assessment protocols in Missouri and Illinois to comply with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. Protocol development in each state included Corps district representatives along with river scientists and various stakeholders. A primary tension in these discussions centered on the tradeoff between the efficiency of using the protocol vs. its scientific rigor. While consensus in Missouri was achieved by leveraging statewide agreements, Illinois lacked similar agreements and included a wider range of scientific participants, which hindered consensus. Despite these differences, the two states produced remarkably similar stream assessment methods. The similarity largely reflected the authority that Corps districts had over the Section 404 process and their privileging of simple and flexible stream mitigation assessments that can be used across different Corps districts. This study provides insights into the social processes that shape no net loss assessment protocols and the practical challenges of protecting the environmental quality of streams. Premise: In the absence of hawkmoth pollinators, chasmogamous (CH) flowers of Ruellia humilis self‐pollinate by two secondary mechanisms. Other floral visitors might exert selection on CH floral traits to restore outcrossing, but at the same time preferential predation of CH seeds generates selection to increase the allocation of resources to cleistogamous (CL) flowers. Methods: To assess the potential for an evolutionary response to these competing selection pressures, we estimated additive genetic variances (σA2 ${\sigma }_{{\rm{A}}}^{2}$) and covariances for 14 reproductive traits and three fitness components in a Missouri population lacking hawkmoth pollinators. Results: We found significant σA2 ${\sigma }_{{\rm{A}}}^{2}$ for all 11 floral traits and two measures of resource allocation to CL flowers, indicating the potential for a short‐term response to selection on most reproductive traits. Selection generated by seed predators is predicted to increase the percentage of CL flowers by 0.24% per generation, and mean stigma–anther separation is predicted to decrease as a correlated response, increasing the fraction of plants that engage in prior selfing. However, the initial response to this selection is opposed by strong directional dominance. Conclusions: The predicted evolutionary decrease in the number of CH flowers available for potential outcrossing, combined with the apparent preclusion of potential diurnal pollinators by the pollen‐harvesting activities of sweat bees, suggest that 100% cleistogamy is the likely outcome of evolution in the absence of hawkmoths. However, rare mutations with large effects, such as delaying budbreak until after sunrise, could provide pathways for the restoration of outcrossing that are not reachable by gradual quantitative‐genetic evolution. Soils with low permeability horizons (e.g., claypans) are vulnerable to loss of nutrients through surface runoff along with preferential flow paths through the restrictive horizon to deeper aquifers. Partitioning between these hydrologic pathways is important to determine transport processes and develop strategies that mitigate stream contamination. Our objective was to investigate controls on groundwater chemistry and recharge pathways using natural geochemical tracers in the Goodwater Creek Experimental Watershed in Missouri, U.S. Groundwater samples were collected during 2011–2017 from 32 piezometers ranging from 0.13 to 16 m deep along with stream water and precipitation. Diagnostic tools of mixing models indicated that chemistry of perched water directly above the claypan and shallow groundwater immediately below was controlled primarily by chemical equilibrium. Five solutes behaved conservatively in most deep piezometers (>5 m), reflecting mixing of two end members and the lack of significant denitrification processes. End member mixing analysis showed that the deeper groundwater originated primarily from groundwater at similar depths, often upslope or from strata directly above, with small contributions from perched water, highlighting the importance of both horizontal and vertical preferential recharge pathways. Vertical pathways are likely dictated by soil heterogeneity throughout the critical zone and do not occur synchronously with precipitation events or simultaneously over all piezometer locations. The complex recharge pathways provide stochastic conduits for nitrate transport to deeper aquifers where legacy stores accumulate, presenting a significant challenge for water quality management in watersheds with restrictive soil horizons and spatially and temporally heterogeneous preferential flow pathways, including the Mississippi River Basin. Plain Language Summary: The transport of nutrients and herbicides to streams is a concern in the U.S. Midwest, where soils with low permeability layers, such as claypans, are extensive. These layers restrict water movement through deeper soil except when cracks form during dry periods. Determining how contaminants move through soil into surface and ground water is important to develop strategies to mitigate water contamination. Using natural geochemical tracers, we determined that deep groundwater originated primarily from groundwater at similar depths with some contributions from water above the claypan. Deep groundwater chemistry resulted from the mixing of these different sources, with little chemical transformations of the contaminants. In contrast, water chemistry above the claypan and shallow groundwater immediately below was controlled primarily by chemical transformations. Claypan cracks provide conduits for the transport of nutrients and herbicides from the surface to deeper groundwater where they accumulate. Soils with restrictive horizons and a high likelihood of cracking challenge water quality management, as deep groundwater provides a major source of high nitrate concentrations in streams. This information can help water managers and water resource agencies evaluate the effectiveness of nutrient management and mitigation practices. Objectives To model the relative contributions of driver data and clinical judgments to clinical ratings of driver capability for a state licensing authority and to compare ratings with on-road test results. Design Retrospective, logistic regression. Setting Missouri Driver License Bureau. Participants Adults aged 60 and older (N = 652; 52% male) evaluated by a physician of their choosing and a portion subsequently road tested (n = 286). Measurements Clinical data from an evidence-based physician statement (Form 1528). A three-level rating (likely capable, unclear, not capable) was collapsed into two outcomes (0 likely capable; 1 unclear, not capable) as the dependent variable. Independent variables (predictors) were age, sex, driving exposure, recent crash or police action, number of medical conditions, medication side effects, driver insight, and disease functional severity rating for driving. Results Three variables in the model (Nagelkerke coefficient of determination = 0.64; P < .001) were significant in the expected direction: disease functional severity for driving (odds ratio (OR = 6.65), insight (OR = 2.35), and age (OR = 1.06). Proportionately more drivers rated likely capable (73%) passed the road test than those rated unclear or not capable (62%). Conclusion Judgments of disease severity, decrements in driver insight, and older age influenced clinician ratings of driving capability. Correspondence of physician ratings to on-road test outcomes was imperfect, highlighting the complexities in translation of clinical judgments to on-road performance. Evaluating the efficacy of management actions to control invasive species is crucial for maintaining funding and to provide feedback for the continual improvement of management efforts. However, it is often difficult to assess the efficacy of control methods due to limited resources for monitoring. Managers may view effort on monitoring as effort taken away from performing management actions. We developed a method to estimate invasive species abundance, evaluate management effectiveness, and evaluate population growth over time from a combination of removal activities (e.g., trapping, ground shooting) using only data collected during removal efforts (method of removal, date, location, number of animals removed, and effort). This dynamic approach allows for abundance estimation at discrete time points and the estimation of population growth between removal periods. To test this approach, we simulated over 1 million conditions, including varying the length of the study, the size of the area examined, the number of removal events, the capture rates, and the area impacted by removal efforts. Our estimates were unbiased (within 10% of truth) 81% of the time and were correlated with truth 91% of the time. This method performs well overall and, in particular, at monitoring trends in abundances over time. We applied this method to removal data from Mingo National Wildlife Refuge in Missouri from December 2015 to September 2019, where the management objective is elimination. Populations of feral swine on Mingo NWR have fluctuated over time but showed marked declines in the last 3–6 months of the time series corresponding to increased removal pressure. Our approach allows for the estimation of population growth across time (from both births and immigration) and therefore, provides a target removal rate (above that of the population growth) to ensure the population will decline. In Mingo NWR, the target monthly removal rate is 18% to cause a population decline. Our method provides advancement over traditional removal modeling approaches because it can be applied to evaluate management programs that use a broad range of removal techniques concurrently and whose management effort and spatial coverage vary across time. Rice is typically produced under flooded conditions, but upward of 120,000 ha of furrow‐irrigated rice (FIR) were produced in Arkansas and Missouri in 2020. Nitrogen management will inherently vary under FIR production due to greater N loss potential, especially via nitrification–denitrification stimulated by wetting and drying cycles of the soil. A series of trials were conducted from 2018 to 2020 to determine the optimum N management program for FIR grown on a silt‐loam soil. Eight sites were used in a split‐plot design, with the whole‐plot factor being location within the field (top vs. bottom) and the split‐plot factor being N management regime. The N management regimes ranged from a single application to a four‐way split. Trial results suggest that multiple N management programs can maximize rice grain yield, including those with a greater number of N applications or season total N rate. The recovery efficiency of N ranged from 53.6 to 76.2% and the agronomic N efficiency ranged from 8.3 to 29.3 kg kg–1. The findings suggest that three weekly applications of 52 kg N ha–1 will allow FIR producers across the Mid‐South to optimize their N management program, potentially increasing yield and decreasing environmental effects resulting from the transition to FIR. Species distribution models are key to spatially explicit conservation and management plans. Modeling distributions using data collected by the public has become increasingly popular; however, it is vital to evaluate their advantages and limitations. We investigated whether distribution models developed using opportunistic data (public reports) are congruent with those developed using professional data, while evaluating two strategies to remove spatial biases: data filtering and covariate removal. We compared GPS telemetry data (598 locations, 2010–2018) with public reports (1384 locations, 2016–2019) of American black bears (Ursus americanus) in Missouri (USA). Reports were subdivided into unfiltered reports, filtered reports (more reliable), and verified reports (confirmed by state agency staff). Each data set was modeled twice, with and without road covariates. Each distribution model was an ensemble of three machine‐learning methods. Models using filtered or verified reports and excluding road covariates were most similar to the telemetry model, both in spatial extent and spatial suitability patterns. However, the report‐derived distributions included several times more agriculture and developed land. The inclusion of roads resulted in spurious patterns and consistently reduced the predicted distribution area by ~10%. Elevation and vegetation productivity were consistently selected as the most important variables, regardless of data source and covariates included in models, but the report‐derived distributions included more agriculture and developed lands. Filtering data for reliability and removing covariates related to spatial biases resulted in models suitable to estimate broad black bear distribution, though differences remained that could represent different segments of the bear population (e.g., dispersing vs. established). Verification was not essential to develop suitable models if reports are filtered for reliability, important for areas that lack professionally collected data to model species distributions. In 1935, the citizens of Missouri established the Missouri Conservation Commission in the state's constitution and in 1976 approved a conservation sales tax to ensure sustainable funding for those priorities. These two major citizen‐led initiatives have been the cornerstone of the Missouri model of conservation and key to the successful implementation of The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) mission for more than 80 years. Even with a successful track record, the health of an organization is only ever in two operating modes—growing or decaying. Beginning in 2017, the department began a focused and intentional effort to transform the agency in an endeavor to remain relevant to a changing citizenry and to better equip the agency to meet current and future challenges. The agency first developed a new strategic plan with three identified goals: 1) MDC takes care of nature, 2) MDC connects people with nature, and 3) MDC maintains public trust. Next, a team of internal staff were charged with creating an organizational design that empowered employees to work in a highly interdependent, team‐oriented environment that ensured efficiency of operations, supported the fulfillment of the strategic plan, and placed Missouri citizens at the center of everything the agency does. The new organizational model establishes a system of governance and organizational structure based on centralized guidance and regional implementation of the strategic plan utilizing interdisciplinary cross‐functional teams. Construction of dams in the mid‐20th century reduced channel dynamism, sediment transport, and regeneration of riparian trees on the Missouri River. Opportunities for forest regeneration, however, may occur where the Missouri River or tributaries deposit sediments in reservoir headwaters, forming deltaic and associated upstream backwater areas. One such delta‐backwater occurs at the confluence of the Niobrara and Missouri rivers upstream from Lewis and Clark Lake in southeastern South Dakota and northeastern Nebraska. We investigated spatiotemporal patterns of tree recruitment through vegetation sampling in 2017–2018, dendrochronology, and analysis of aerial photography from 2006 to 2016. We sampled woody vegetation in 47 plots and took tree‐ring samples from one to two trees within each plot to determine establishment dates. Woody vegetation was dominated by Populus deltoides (cottonwood) and Salix amygdaloides (peachleaf willow) in the tree layer and Salix interior (sandbar willow) in the shrub layer. Tree establishment occurred primarily in 2010–2012 and was distributed throughout the study area, including at the delta‐reservoir interface. LiDAR data showed that most of the delta‐backwater experienced a 0.5‐m increase in elevation in 2005–2011, a period that included high flows in 2010 on the Niobrara River and 2011 on the Missouri River. Woody vegetation decreased 8% from 2006 to 2012, but doubled from 2012 to 2016, colonizing areas of previous sandbar and herbaceous vegetation. These woodlands represent early successional habitat that is in decline elsewhere along the river. Understanding vegetation dynamics within reservoir delta‐backwaters may be vital for forecasting changes in regulated riverine landscapes, assessing biodiversity values of these ecosystems, and informing sustainable reservoir management. Background and Aims: For electronic cigarettes (e‐cigarettes) to be a viable substitute for combustible cigarettes, it is likely that they must be rewarding enough for regular use, indicated by factors such as craving and dependence, important aspects of reinforcement. This study aimed to understand short‐term changes in measures of nicotine dependence between groups differing by use trajectory in a switching trial, and within group changes of these measures. Design Secondary data analysis of one arm of an e‐cigarette randomized clinical trial. Setting: San Diego, California and Kansas City, Missouri, United States. Participants: 114 African American (n = 60) and Latinx (n = 54) smokers (58.8% male) attempting to switch to nicotine salt pod system (NSPS) e‐cigarettes in a 6‐week trial. Measurements At week 6, participants were classified by use trajectory: exclusive smokers (n = 16), exclusive e‐cigarette (n = 32), or dual users (n = 66). E‐cigarette, cigarette, and total nicotine dependence (cigarette + e‐cigarette), use patterns, cigarette craving and nicotine withdrawal, and cotinine were assessed at baseline and week 6 using standard measures. Findings In between group comparisons, exclusive e‐cigarette and dual users showed greater reductions in cigarette dependence (e‐cigarette: −32.38, 95% CI = −37.7,−27.1; dual: −18.48, 95% CI = −22.2,−14.7), withdrawal (e‐cigarette: −6.25, 95% CI = −8.52,−3.98; dual: −3.18, 95% CI = −5.02,−1.34), craving (e‐cigarette: −11.44, 95% CI = −14.2,8.7; dual: −9.59, 95% CI = −11.6,−7.59), and cigarettes per day (CPD; e‐cigarette: −11.19, 95% CI = −13.1,−9.27; dual: −9.39, 95% CI = −11.3, −7.52) compared with exclusive smokers. In within group analyses, e‐cigarette and dual users showed reductions in craving and withdrawal from baseline to week 6. Exclusive e‐cigarette and dual users, maintained cotinine levels (all Ps > 0.05) and showed reductions in CPD and cigarette dependence (all Ps < 0.01). Findings were inconclusive regarding changes in total nicotine dependence from baseline to week 6 among exclusive e‐cigarette users (P = 0.123). Dual users showed increased total nicotine dependence (P < 0.001) and smokers showed decreased total dependence (P = 0.004). Conclusions: Smokers who switch to nicotine salt pod system e‐cigarettes maintain their nicotine levels and transfer their dependence, suggesting that nicotine salt pod system e‐cigarettes have a similar reinforcement potential to cigarettes and facilitate switching. Abiotic stresses, physiological dysfunction, forest stand dynamics and primary tree attackers (native and non‐native) are all recognized as important contributors to both anomalous tree mortality and background tree mortality, and thus as important influences on biogeochemical cycling and habitat for associated terrestrial organisms. Opportunistic and latent tree pathogens and insect pests have largely been left out of this discussion, probably because they are difficult to monitor and their effects sometimes more diffuse, yet they play important roles in tree mortality scenarios.We know very little about the influence of biotic gradients, for example, forest dynamics and forest structure, on the occurrence and effects of these opportunistic biotic enemies. To better understand the influence of an important biotic gradient—forest structure as represented by tree density and competition—on the occurrence and distribution of a typical opportunistic pathogen, we analysed the relationship between tree neighbourhood competition and soil‐dwelling rhizomorphs of the fungus Armillaria gallica in regenerating (20‐year‐old) and mature (80‐ to 100‐year‐old) hardwood‐dominated forest stands in central Missouri following a severe drought.We detected A. gallica rhizomorphs in twice as many sampling sites in young (dense) plots as in mature (open) plots, and by contrast found a twofold occurrence of other saprophytic fungi in the soil of mature plots compared to young plots. Mean tree density and competition index were significantly higher in subplots where A. gallica was found than in those with no A. gallica detections, and the pattern of A. gallica occurrence tracked closely with the occurrence of dense 'hotspots' of competition in the plots.Synthesis. Early stages of forest structure and succession—potentially through initial inputs of disturbance‐produced woody biomass, increased host connectivity and competition‐influenced host tree susceptibility to fungal colonization—provide important feedbacks to A. gallica foraging, which in turn influences forest development. The recognition that tree density and competition influence A. gallica foraging suggests that, to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of forest growth, development, tree mortality and biogeochemical cycling, it may be necessary to increase life‐history studies and basic occurrence surveys for opportunistic tree pathogens and insect pests. BACKGROUND Protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase 2 (PPO2) inhibitors are important for the management of glyphosate‐ and acetolactate synthase‐resistant Palmer amaranth [Amaranthus palmeri (S.) Wats.]. The evolving resistance to PPO inhibitors is of great concern. We surveyed the evolution of resistance to fomesafen in the US Mid‐south and determined its correlation with the known functional PPO2 target‐site mutations (TSM). RESULTS: The 167 accessions analyzed were grouped into five categories, four resistant (147) and one susceptible (20). Arkansas accessions constituted 100% of the susceptible group while the Missouri accessions comprised 60% of the most resistant category. The majority of Mississippi accessions (88%) clustered in the high‐survival‐high‐injury category, manifesting an early‐stage resistance evolution. One hundred and fifteen accessions were genotyped for four known TSMs; 74% of accessions carried at least one TSM. The most common single TSM was ΔG210 (18% of accessions) and the predominant double mutation was ΔG210 + G399A (17%). Other mutations are likely less favorable, hence are rare. All TSMs were detected in three accessions. Further examination revealed that 9 and two individuals carried G399A + G210 and G399A + R128G TSM in the same allele, respectively. The existence of these combinations is supported by molecular modeling. CONCLUSIONS: Resistance to PPO inhibitors is widespread across the Mid‐southern USA. Highly resistant field populations have plants with multiple mutations. G399A is the most prone to co‐occur with other ppo2 mutations in the same allele. Mutation at R128 in the configuration of the PPO2 catalytic domain restrains the co‐occurrence of R128G with ΔG210, making ΔG210 + G399A the most plausible, tolerable functional mutation combination to co‐occur in the same ppo2 allele. Background: Emerging adulthood is a critical neurodevelopment period in which extreme drinking has a potentially pronounced neurotoxic effect. Therefore, extreme drinking, even a single episode, could be particularly harmful to the developing brain's structure. Relatedly, heavy alcohol use in emerging adults has been associated with structural brain damage, especially in the corpus callosum. However, it is unclear whether and how much a single extreme drinking episode would affect brain morphometry. Methods: For the first time in the literature, the current study prospectively examined the impact of an extreme drinking episode (i.e., twenty‐first birthday celebration) on the brain morphometry of emerging adults immediately following their birthday celebration (n = 50) and approximately 5 weeks post–birthday celebration (n = 29). Results: We found evidence that a single extreme drinking episode was associated with structural changes immediately post–birthday celebration. Specifically, higher twenty‐first birthday estimated blood‐alcohol concentration was associated with decreased volume of the posterior and central corpus callosum immediately post–birthday celebration. This extreme drinking episode was not associated with further structural changes, or recovery, 5 weeks post–twenty‐first birthday celebration. Conclusions: Overall, results suggest that a single episode of heavy drinking in emerging adulthood may be associated with immediate structural changes of the corpus callosum. Thus, emerging adulthood, which is characterized by high rates of extreme drinking, could be a critical period for targeted prevention and intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Riverine fish populations depend on habitats supporting their resource and life history needs. Dynamic streamflow caused by river regulation or natural events influences the distribution of downstream habitat characteristics. Through studying habitat selection, we can identify the most utilized and valuable habitats for the success of native fishes. We determined seasonal habitat selection of two common, native fish species on the Osage River downstream of Bagnell Dam, a hydroelectric dam in central Missouri, from April 2016 to June 2017 using radio telemetry. Spotted Bass (Micropterus punctulatus) are nest‐guarders, sight feeders, and habitat generalists, whereas Shorthead Redhorse (Moxostoma macrolepidotum) are fluvial dependent, migratory, and benthic feeders. Bayesian discrete choice analyses determined that both species selected particular water depth, velocity, and presence of submerged cover in some or all seasons, even as available habitat changed. Spotted Bass selected water depths <4.0 m near submerged cover during all seasons, low velocity during spring and summer, and near‐bank habitat in all seasons except spring. Shorthead Redhorse used fast flowing habitat during spring, 0.4–1.1 m/s velocity during summer, and low velocity in fall and winter (0.1–0.5 m/s). Shorthead Redhorse used submerged cover in all seasons except summer and selected specific ranges of depth within spring (2.4–4.4 m), summer (3.3–6.7 m), and winter (1.1–2.3 m). Our findings suggest that maintaining habitats with cover and diverse water depths and velocities, particularly both low and high velocity habitats during spring, may promote resilience by providing beneficial habitats for native fishes. Despite the low permeability of claypan soils, groundwater has been heavily contaminated by nitrate in agricultural watersheds dominated by claypan soils. However, it is unclear how nitrate concentrations in groundwater affect stream water quality. In this study, streamflow pathways were investigated using natural geochemical tracers in the 73‐km2 Goodwater Creek Experimental Watershed in northeastern Missouri. Samples were collected from 2011 to 2017 from stream water (weekly‐biweekly), precipitation (event‐based), groundwater in 25 wells with screened depths varying from 2 to 16 m (bimonthly–seasonal) and interflow above the claypan in 7 shallow piezometers (weekly–monthly). The results of endmember mixing analysis using major ions indicate that streamflow was dominated by near‐surface runoff (59 ± 20%), followed by interflow (25 ± 16%) and groundwater (16 ± 13%). Analysis of endmember distances using the mixing space defined by stream water chemistry suggests that groundwater contributions to streamflow came primarily from the intermediate to deep glacial till aquifer near and below 8 m. Near‐surface runoff was persistent and dominant even after isolated precipitation events during a prolonged dry period. It is hypothesised that the alluvial aquifer near stream banks acts as a mixing zone to receive and store various source waters, resulting in persistent delivery of runoff to the stream. Groundwater, even though its contribution was limited, plays a significant role in regulating streamflow NO3− concentrations. This study significantly improves our understanding of claypan hydrology and will lead to the development of models and decision support tools for implementation of management practices that improve groundwater and stream water quality in restrictive layer watersheds. The age and origin of the Grover Gravel, which is preserved on stable uplands in St. Louis County, Missouri, USA, and similar gravels along the Mississippi River bluffs farther south, have been controversial for over a century. These gravels have some features consistent with a glacial origin but lack obvious erratics such as igneous rock fragments. New observations, however, show that the earliest tills within the Mississippi basin nearly lack such constituents as well, and that the Grover Gravel is a Pleistocene deposit derived from such a till. A Mississippi River terrace deposit in St. Louis County also includes typical clasts of this till and formed between 2.0–1.8 Ma, based on various dating methods. This deposit may correspond to a pulse of glacial meltwater recorded within sediment near the mouth of the Mississippi River and represent outwash from a previously unrecognized glaciation within the US midcontinent. The Mounds Gravel (or Upland Complex) is present farther south around the perimeter of the Mississippi Embayment and contains the same distinct clasts as the gravels in St. Louis County. Given that the age of the Mounds is <~3 Ma based on cosmogenic‐nuclide ratios, the southern gravel could be the same age as the gravel terrace in St. Louis County. If so, these gravels could mark a geomorphic transition to glacial‐dominated sedimentation farther south in and around the Gulf of Mexico. Regardless, all the upland gravels have insignificant amounts of zircon from provinces west of Hudson Bay. Therefore, detrital zircon provenance does not support a recent hypothesis that the Mounds (Upland Complex) was deposited by a giant Mississippi River with a drainage basin extending across broad areas west of Hudson Bay. As bank loans fell in the 2008 crisis, business bankruptcy increased. To study how bank loans affect business balance sheets and bankruptcy, we use new data on bankrupt businesses in Missouri between 1898 and 1942. We confirm that when banks curtail loans, courts see more bankruptcies among businesses with high exposure to bank debt. To reduce real volatility, policy‐makers can set tough bank liquidity requirements in the upswing of business cycle but allow weaker requirements in the downswing. We also find that between 1914 and 1933, businesses in St. Louis were more sensitive to changes in bank loans than businesses in Kansas City, probably due to the tight monetary policy conducted by the conservative St. Louis Fed. The Glass‐Steagall Act weakened the relationship between bank loans and business debt structure. The takeaway is that lender‐of‐last‐resort practices stabilize both the financial sector and the real economy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Unlike post‐emergence herbicides (POSTs), little is known about droplet size effect on pre‐emergence herbicide (PRE) efficacy. Four nozzle types were used to apply different PRE herbicides on eight soybean fields in Missouri and Mississippi in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Pendimethalin, metribuzin, clomazone, imazethapyr and pyroxasulfone were selected based on their physicochemical characteristics (adsorption, volatility and solubility) and were sprayed using XR11002, ULD12002, TTI6011002, and TTI11002 nozzles. RESULTS: The XR nozzle produced the smallest droplet size (DV0.5), 204 μm, followed by the ULD, TTI60 and TTI with DV0.5 of 468, 646, and 794 μm, respectively. Droplet size, spray coverage, nozzle type or physicochemical characteristics showed no effect on PRE herbicide efficacy, except in the Monroe County, MS, field, with pendimethalin. The TTI60 twin fan nozzle enhanced pendimethalin weed control (up to 91%) in comparison with pendimethalin sprayed with the TTI nozzle (64%), in a high organic matter (OM) soil composed of large soil clods and high weed pressure. It was hypothesized that improved herbicide penetration assisted by the TTI60 dual fan pattern increased herbicide‐moisture contact and clod coverage by the herbicide. Under soils with higher OM content (>2%) pendimethalin weed control was reduced. In soils with low OM (<0.7%), low cation exchange capacity (CEC) (<13.1%) and rainfall of 12.2 mm within 3 days after application, metribuzin also resulted in reduced weed control. Ratios of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and dissolved silica (DSi) influence how algal communities respond to nutrient loading, and DSi limitation can facilitate cyanobacterial dominance. The indicator of coastal eutrophication potential (ICEP), described previously by other researchers, predicts production by diatoms vs. nonsiliceous taxa based on deviation of nutrient loads from the Redfield ratio of 106C:16 N:20Si (N‐ICEP) or 106C:1P:20Si (P‐ICEP). The ICEP was calculated for the Mississippi‐Atchafalaya River basin, and four subbasins: the Ohio‐Tennessee, Missouri, Upper Mississippi, and Arkansas‐Red basins from 1979 to 2015. The P‐ICEP indicated a stoichiometric imbalance that favored cyanobacteria for all but the Arkansas‐Red subbasin. The N‐ICEP indicated conditions favorable for cyanobacteria in the Upper Mississippi, Ohio‐Tennessee, and the northern Gulf of Mexico. Agriculture is the predominant land use in the Upper Mississippi and Ohio‐Tennessee subbasins and these subbasins controlled the stoichiometry of the nutrients delivered to the northern Gulf of Mexico. The imbalance in N, P, and DSi inputs to the Gulf was greatest during spring and early summer, and in most years transitioned to favoring diatoms by August or September. Comparing the 1980–1994 and 2001–2015 periods, there was a significant increase in the P‐ICEP for the Upper Mississippi, Ohio‐Tennessee, and Missouri subbasins that appeared to arise mainly from increased P loading to surface waters in the those basins. Tallgrass prairies, which once occupied a large swath of central North America, face the combined challenges of habitat loss and fragmentation. In Missouri, where less than 1% the historical prairie remains, prairies are being reconstructed from agricultural or wooded land.Invertebrates are often assumed to colonise reconstructions if native vegetation returns; however, the limited mobility of many invertebrates, the isolation of many tallgrass remnants, and the difficulty in establishing prairie plants raise serious questions as to whether invertebrate communities on reconstructed prairies are and will be equivalent to those found on remnant prairies.Grasshoppers (Acrididae) display a range of dispersal capabilities and may be valuable for assessing the success of prairie restoration for invertebrates.Our first objective was to compare grasshopper communities on reconstructed and remnant prairies and, if differences existed, identify species or functional groups associated with each habitat type. The second objective was to evaluate the effect of time because prairie reconstruction on grasshopper communities to determine if communities on reconstructions are converging with communities on remnants.Our results suggest that prairie reconstructions in Missouri do not support the same communities of grasshoppers as prairie remnants.Grasshopper diversity was generally greater on remnants. Many species had not colonised nearby reconstructions.Communities on prairie reconstructions were characterised by a few long‐winged, generalist species that are typically successful in agroecosystems.Further investigation into the habitat disparities driving low grasshopper diversity on reconstructions could help restore the grasshopper community of reconstructions. Urbanization, lack of contact with the natural world, and growing up removed from agriculture has contributed to a void of knowledge relating to food and food production, along with a phenomenon known as plant blindness. We sought to change this lack of appreciation and understanding of plants by the creation of a "top 10" list of plants that have most shaped or influenced our respective states. Using the public interface of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and the State Botanic Garden of Tennessee, we engaged the public by asking for their nominations of influential plants. The public was interested in proposing and guessing the "winning" 10 plants and learning why each plant was selected. In each state, a panel of experts used six criteria to make the final selections including: cultural or spiritual, economic or industrial, environmental, health, historical, landscape, and sustenance or food. After the results were announced, multiple institutions have held educational events using this theme, including state historical and horticultural societies, universities, botanic gardens, schools, Extension Master Gardeners, 4‐H, Ag in the Classroom, and alumni associations. This article outlines how these educational campaigns were developed as well as the programs, events, and publications that were created to educate the public and the next generation about the critical importance of plants and how they contribute to our society, health, and well‐being. As Peter Raven (Emeritus Director of the Missouri Botanic Garden) said when reviewing the book The 10 Plants that Changed Minnesota, "every state would benefit from a similar effort." The stigma associated with a felony conviction can impede the reentry process, and emerging research findings indicate that one's community can amplify or temper the mark of a criminal record. Researchers examining criminal stigma have focused on individuals living in urban areas, overlooking the experiences of persons outside these communities. Using qualitative data collected from a sample of men and women paroled for sexual offenses in Missouri, we contrast how social and structural stigma alter the reentry experiences for participants living in communities along the rural and urban continuum. The results show that the stigma of a sex offense conviction was a near‐universal experience and residence restrictions stymied efforts to find housing. Residents of urban areas and some large cities felt that the community offered relative anonymity from stigma but the stress of their status being discovered was omnipresent. Participants in rural areas and small cities had less social privacy and reported being shunned in the community, although strong social ties did mitigate some of the consequences of stigma. The results highlight the importance of considering place when studying reentry and have implications for designing correctional policies to address the needs of residents returning to non–metropolitan locations. Anticipating changes in hydrologic variables is essential for making socioeconomic water resource decisions. This study aims to assess the potential impact of land use and climate change on the hydrologic processes of a primarily rain‐fed, agriculturally based watershed in Missouri. A detailed evaluation was performed using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool for the near future (2020–2039) and mid‐century (2040–2059). Land use scenarios were mapped using the Conversion of Land Use and its Effects model. Ensemble results, based on 19 climate models, indicated a temperature increase of about 1.0°C in near future and 2.0°C in mid‐century. Combined climate and land use change scenarios showed distinct annual and seasonal hydrologic variations. Annual precipitation was projected to increase from 6% to 7%, which resulted in 14% more spring days with soil water content equal to or exceeding field capacity in mid‐century. However, summer precipitation was projected to decrease, a critical factor for crop growth. Higher temperatures led to increased potential evapotranspiration during the growing season. Combined with changes in precipitation patterns, this resulted in an increased need for irrigation by 38 mm representing a 10% increase in total irrigation water use. Analysis from multiple land use scenarios indicated converting agriculture to forest land can potentially mitigate the effects of climate change on streamflow, thus ensuring future water availability. BACKGROUND: School nurses and personnel play a vital role in promoting the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with school nurses' and personnel's professional practice to provide parents with HPV vaccine information and to encourage parents to vaccinate their child against HPV. METHODS: School nurses and personnel from Ohio and Missouri completed a survey to assess their professional practice in providing HPV vaccine information and encouraging parents to vaccinate their child against HPV. Independent variables included demographics, HPV knowledge/attitudes, perceptions of their as an opinion leader for the HPV vaccine, self‐efficacy to provide vaccine education, and perception of school district support. RESULTS: Providing parents with HPV vaccine information was predicted by age, role within the school, grade‐serving, knowledge, perceptions, self‐efficacy, and district support; accounting for 38% of the variance (p < .000, R2 = .38). Encouraging parents to vaccinate their child against HPV was predicted by perception, self‐efficacy, and grade‐serving; accounting for 39% of the variance (p < .000, R2 = .39). CONCLUSIONS: To enhance school nurses' and personnel's professional practice, interventions should focus on nurses' and personnel's perception of their role as opinion leaders and self‐efficacy to provide HPV education and vaccine recommendation. Elk (Cervus canadensis) have been successfully translocated to 11 states in the United States and 1 Canadian province in eastern North America. Availability of suitable habitat is an important factor in determining the success of relocations, but there is limited information on habitat selection of elk in eastern deciduous forests. Our objective was to determine resource selection of male and female elk recently translocated in the Ozark Mountains, Missouri, USA. We placed global positioning system (GPS) collars on all translocated adult elk. We modeled seasonal resource selection as a function of 9 habitat‐related covariates using a hierarchical Bayesian discrete choice model. Forage openings (cultivated fields providing forage for wildlife), glades, and cool‐season grasslands (pastures) had high probabilities of elk use. Areas with vegetation type heterogeneity, low canopy cover, and far from paved roads but close to 2‐track roads also had high probabilities of elk use. The availability of open lands, such as glades, pastures, and forage openings, appears to be important for elk in all seasons in forest‐dominated landscapes and may help encourage site fidelity following translocation and reduce conflict with private property as the population becomes established. Managers of elk populations in similar ecosystems should ensure sufficient availability of open lands, which might be met through maintenance of forage openings and restoration of natural open lands. Additionally, restoration efforts can benefit from post‐translocation monitoring that allows managers to improve upon externally derived habitat models through a process of adaptive restoration planning and habitat management. © 2018 The Wildlife Society. Availability of open lands (e.g., glades, pastures, forage openings) is important for elk restoration in forest‐dominated landscapes in eastern North America, and managers of elk populations in such ecosystems can ensure sufficient availability of open lands through habitat management. Abstract: Calibration of the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM), land model (ELMv0) is challenging because of its model complexity, strong model nonlinearity, and significant computational requirements. Therefore, only a limited number of simulations can be allowed in any attempt to find a near‐optimal solution within an affordable time. The goal of this study is to calibrate some of the ELMv0 parameters to improve model projection of carbon fluxes. We propose a computationally efficient global optimization procedure using sparse‐grid based surrogates. We first use advanced sparse grid (SG) interpolation to construct a surrogate system of the ELMv0, and then calibrate the surrogate model in the optimization process. As the surrogate model is a polynomial whose evaluation is fast, it can be efficiently evaluated a sufficiently large number of times in the optimization, which facilitates the global search. We calibrate eight parameters against five years of net ecosystem exchange, total leaf area index, and latent heat flux data from the U.S. Missouri Ozark flux tower. The calibrated model is then used for predicting the three variables in the following 4 years. The results indicate that an accurate surrogate model can be created for the ELMv0 with a relatively small number of SG points, i.e., a few ELMv0 simulations that can be fully parallel. And, the application of the optimized parameters leads to a better model performance and a higher predictive capability than the default parameter values in the ELMv0. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
