A five-wavelength-switchable thulium-doped fiber laser with a fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based five-channel transmitting Fabry-Pérot (F-P) filter and a multi-coupler based triple-ring cavity (CTRC) filter, is experimentally proposed. For the first time, a multi-channel F-P filter and specially-designed coupler-based compound cavity filter were combined to realize multi-wavelength-switchable operation, with single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) lasing for each wavelength channel in a 2 µm band fiber laser. The theoretical analysis of the CTRC filter and the principle for achieving SLM operation by corporately using the F-P filter and CTRC filter were presented in detail. The experimental results demonstrated the good performance of the proposed filters. Five lasing wavelengths (1941.13 nm, 1941.22 nm, 1941.30 nm, 1941.39 nm, and 1941.47 nm) were obtained with good switchability, and each operated in a stable SLM state. The OSNR of each lasing wavelength was higher than 50 dB, and the linewidths of all obtained wavelengths were less than 8 kHz.

A switchable multi-wavelength thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) using either two-stage cascaded or two-segment Sagnac loop filters are proposed and analyzed. Both filters incorporate a 3-m and 1.7-m long polarization-maintaining fiber, which acts as a comb filter. By adjusting two polarization controllers, when the TDFL used a cascaded Sagnac loop filter, eight stable single-wavelength operations were obtained with easy switching among them. The wavelength range was 16.36 nm during the single-wavelength switchable operation, with the optical signal-to-noise ratio up to 55 dB. This TDFL can achieve at most quintuple-wavelength operation. When the TDFL used a two-segment Sagnac loop filter, we achieved single-wavelength and dual-wavelength switchable. This TDFL can achieve at most stable quadruple-wavelength operation. In dual-wavelength switchable operation, the maximum and minimum wavelength spacings were 21.78 nm and 1.50 nm. Due to its abundant range of wavelengths, the proposed TDFLs has great potential in wavelength-division multiplexing.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a multi-wavelength thulium-doped fiber laser using two cascaded single-mode-four-mode-single-mode (SFS) fiber interferometers and a 150-m-long highly nonlinear fiber. The transmission properties of SFS fiber interferometers with two different four-mode fiber (FMF) lengths are analyzed theoretically. The interferometer with a longer FMF is used to select specific wavelengths, and the one with a shorter FMF is used to stimulate more laser lines. By adjusting the polarization controller and increasing the pump power, the number of output laser channels and the wavelength spacings can be changed and switched. By selecting the proper length of the FMFs, 31 lasing lines are achieved with covering a wavelength range of $\sim 22$ nm. The power fluctuation and the wavelength drift of the 31-wavelength operation for the proposed fiber laser are within 0.706 dB and 0.02 nm, respectively.

Here we present a self-started passively mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser with in-band pumping at 1561 nm that fully retains polarization and emits beyond 2 μm. We obtained a sequence of light pulses at 13.084 MHz, where the pulse and spectral widths were 94 ps and 70 pm, respectively, at 2069.5 nm. The measured instantaneous angular frequency shows that these light pulses are chirp-free.

A dual-wavelength dissipative soliton resonance thulium-doped fiber laser based on nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) has been demonstrated. In this laser, mode-locking is achieved based on equivalent saturation absorption of the NOLM, while the dual-wavelength operation is attributed to the online birefringent fiber filter composed of a polarizer and a section of polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF). The wavelength spacing of dual-wavelength spectrum can be adjusted through changing the PMF length, and the central wavelengths can be tuned through rotating the polarization controllers. It is also found that at the two central wavelengths of the dual-wavelength pulse, switchable single wavelength mode-locked pulse can be generated. In addition, noise-like pulses with broadband spectra can be generated, when two kinds of mode-locking mechanisms conflict. The dual-wavelength dissipative soliton resonance thulium-doped fiber laser has important potential applications in the laser detection, sensing and other fields. Its rich dynamics also provides a system platform for basic research on laser physics.

A single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) thulium-doped fiber laser, based on an eye-shaped passive dual-ring filter, is designed and constructed. The eye-shaped passive compound cavity consisting of four couplers is used to increase the longitudinal mode spacing, and its performance is numerically analyzed in detail. A homemade uniform fiber Bragg grating serves as a wavelength selection device and a saturable absorber is used to further suppress the intense longitudinal mode competition in the laser cavity, ensuring the single-longitudinal-mode output. The experimental results demonstrate a laser output with a center wavelength of 2,049.85 nm and an optical signal-to-noise ratio of 63 dB. Moreover, the power fluctuation is less than 0.6 dB, and the center wavelength fluctuation is less than 0.03 nm over a continuous measurement period of 60 min, demonstrating an excellent stability. The laser linewidth is measured using an unbalanced Michelson interferometer and β-separation line method, resulting in a linewidth of 11.22 kHz.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of a thulium-doped fiber laser and a diode laser in zero ischemia kidney surgery, by carrying out a comparative study in a pig model. Material and methods: Research was carried out on 12 pigs weighing 30 kg each. A thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) and a diode laser (DL) operating at wavelengths of 1940 and 1470 nm, respectively, were used. The cut sites were assessed both macroscopically and microscopically. The zone of thermal damage visible in the histopathological preparations was divided into superficial and total areas. Results: During partial nephrectomy, moderate to minimal bleeding was observed, which did not require additional hemostatic measures. All animals survived the procedure. On day 0, the total thermal damage depth was 837.8 µm for the TDFL and 1175.0 µm for the DL. On day 7, the depths were 1556.2 and 2301.7 µm, respectively. On day 14, the overall thermal damage depth for the DL was the greatest (6800 µm). The width of the superficial zone was significantly reduced on days 7 and 14 after TDFL application. Conclusion: Both lasers are suitable for partial wedge nephrectomy without ischemia in pigs. The TDFL produced similar or better hemostasis than the DL, with a smaller zone of thermal damage and, therefore, seems more suitable for application in human medicine.

A thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) with switchable single-wavelength output was proposed and experimentally constructed, and its output characteristics were investigated. The central wavelengths were 1940.52 nm and 2048.04 nm, defined by a superimposed uniform fiber Bragg grating (SI-UFBG) with reflectivity larger than 92%. Switchable output was successfully achieved by using polarization-dependent loss, with the help of a drop-in polarization controller and an in-line polarizer. For both output wavelengths, optical signal-to-noise ratios larger than 80 dB were achieved. Maximum fluctuations of the central wavelengths of 1940.52 nm and 2048.02 nm under 60 min were, respectively, 0.04 nm and 0.01 nm. Maximum fluctuations of output power for the same wavelengths over the same time period were, respectively, 1.09 dB and 0.12 dB. Maximum output powers of 215.12 mW and 155.53 mW were achieved for the respective output wavelengths of 1940.52 nm and 2048.02 nm. Moreover, a tuning range of ∼2 nm was realized by enforcing a strain on the SI-UFBG. The proposed TDFL may be applied in laser medicine and free-space-related applications.

Wavelength-tunable thulium-doped fiber laser is demonstrated employing a digital micromirror device (DMD) in combination with a fixed grating. The diffraction property of four typical models of DMDs and its steering efficiency for the laser system are analyzed based on two-dimensional grating theory. By spatially modulating reflective patterns on a DMD, the stable, fast, and flexible tuning of lasing wavelength from 1930 nm to 2000 nm is achieved with wavelength tuning accuracy of 0.1 nm. The side-mode suppression ratio is larger than 50 dB around the 2 &mu, m band with 3 dB linewidth less than 0.05 nm. The wavelength drift and power fluctuation are lower than 0.05 nm and 0.1 dB within 1 h at the room temperature, respectively.

A single-longitudinal-mode (SLM), narrow linewidth thulium-doped fiber laser with a sampled fiber Bragg grating (SFBG), switchable among three wavelengths, with a cascade dual-coupler-ring-based compound cavity (DCR-CC) filter, is proposed and demonstrated. The coupling design, simulation analysis, and characterization of the DCR-CC filter provide the foundation for the experiment. A nonlinear polarization rotation system was injected into the cavity to suppress gain competition and achieve a laser switchable among three wavelengths. The fluctuations of the wavelength and power of the output laser are less than 0.60 nm and 0.91 dBm, respectively. For demonstration, the laser maintained in SLM operation measured by the delayed self-heterodyne method has a linewidth of < 3.7 k H z and relative intensity noise of < − 114 d B / H z .

Passively Q-switched thulium doped fiber laser (TDFL) has been successfully demonstrated using gold nanoparticles (GNPs), which were embedded into polyvinyl alcohol as saturable absorber (SA). The stable self-starting Q-switched laser was generated to operate at 1 891 nm when a tiny piece of the prepared film was slot in between two fiber ferrules and incorporated into the laser cavity. The repetition rate can be adjusted from 48.54 kHz to 49.64 kHz while the pulse width decreased from 3.52 µs to 2.38 µs with the increase of 1 550 nm pump power from 840 mW to 930 mW. The corresponding pump power output power linearly increased from 3.62 mW to 6.3 mW with a slope efficiency of 2.53%. The maximum peak power and pulse energy were recorded at about 39 mW and 0.12 µJ, respectively at pump power of 930 mW. The Q-switching operation was caused by the surface plasmon resonance absorption of GNPs.

A modified polarization-maintaining Sagnac loop mirror is proposed, and the simulated transmission spectrum of the proposed filter is in accordance with experimental transmission spectrum. Based on the proposed filter, a multi-wavelength thulium-doped fiber laser is constructed and experimentally demonstrated. The stable multi-wavelength oscillation within 60 minutes is achieved through the nonlinear polarization rotation effect enhanced by the highly nonlinear fiber. By fine tuning the polarization state, up to 35 lasing lines are obtained within a 10-dB bandwidth with wavelength separation of ∼1.38 nm at room temperature. The wavelength shift and the output power fluctuation are less than 0.04 nm and 1.69 dB, respectively. In addition, by changing the optical coupling ratio in the Sagnac loop mirror, different outputs with 7, 8, 16 lasing lines are also obtained.

We experimentally demonstrate a passively mode-locking thulium-doped fiber laser based on the combination of the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) and the semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). In contrast to SESAM mode-locking merely, the fiber lasers based on NPR working together with SESAM have more advantages. By using two mode-locking mechanisms, the nonlinear effect can be enhanced tremendously; then, the threshold of high-order harmonic mode-locking (HML) pulse trains can be decreased, and the pulses width can be compressed. The shapes of the pulses can also be reshaped better, and the HML pulse trains stability can be improved. The high repetition rate of 1.78 GHz is obtained by both NPR and SESAM in the experiment. Because of the variation of the gain-and-loss distribution in the cavity, the output wavelength of mode-locking fiber laser can be tuned from 1839 to 1890 nm, and the multiwavelength HML is also observed in the experiment.

We report on the pulse instability in GHz repetition-rate thulium-doped fiber laser from the numerical perspective, hinging on a combined physical model that incorporates rate equations of rare-earth ion energy levels and nonlinear Schrodinger equation. In terms of this more explicit model, we predict two pulsating regimes, i.e., gain- and soliton-induced pulsations. Further, the study also reveals a novel type of pulse instability in a continuous wave mode locking (CWML) regime, in which the pulse-intensity fluctuates as well as a notable pedestal of radio-frequency spectrum arises. The proposed modeling can be universally applied, and the numerical results are able to offer reliable guidance to design high repetition rate mode-locked fiber lasers.

We report the development of a widely tunable mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser based on a robust chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG). By applying mechanical tension and compression to the CFBG, an overall tunability of 20.1 nm, spanning from 2022.1 nm to 2042.2 nm, was achieved. The observed mode-locked pulse train from this fiber laser has a repetition rate of 9.4 MHz with an average power of 12.6 dBm and a pulse duration between 9.0 ps and 12.8 ps, depending on the central wavelength. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a tunable mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser operating beyond 2 µm using a CFBG as a wavelength-selective element.

A high-power, narrow-linewidth, continuous-wave, thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) based on a master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) was experimentally demonstrated. The main oscillator (seed source) yielded 0.64 W of narrow-linewidth laser output at a central wavelength of 1940.32 nm and a 3 dB spectral bandwidth of 0.05 nm. The output narrow-linewidth laser from the main oscillator was amplified by two-stage, cladding-pumped, thulium-doped, all-fiber amplifiers. The main amplifier yielded 26 W of narrow-linewidth laser at a central wavelength of 1940.33 nm. The slope efficiency of the main amplifier was approximately 55.6%. Significant residual pumping light component in the output laser was not observed. During the amplification process, no stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect, strong amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) effect, and parasitic lasers were observed at the reverse monitoring end. Moreover, the output power was only limited by the incident pump power and the output power had a good stability in a 50 min monitoring period.

This paper proposes and demonstrates a single-longitudinal-mode thulium-doped fiber laser using a passive triple-coupler ring-based compound-cavity filter (TCR-CC) and a uniform fiber Bragg grating. For the first time, the TCR-CC filter is used to select a single mode from dense longitudinal modes. Experimental results show that laser in the wavelength of 1941.28 nm can maintain exceptional stability with an optical signal-to-noise ratio of 74.1 dB. The measured maximum wavelength drift and power fluctuation are 0.01 nm and 0.45 dB, respectively. Meanwhile, the measured linewidth of the laser is 910 Hz, and the relative intensity noise is below −125.82 dB/Hz above 2 MHz frequencies.

We report a stable, robust, and compact passively mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser that can be wavelength-stabilized between 1958 and 2008 nm using the appropriate chirped fiber Bragg grating as a wavelength-selective element.

A single-frequency all-fiber thulium doped laser with distributed feedback is presented. The fiber Bragg grating with a phase shift, which is the cavity of the laser, is written in a highly-doped 36-mm segment of the thulium-doped fiber. The highest power of the single-frequency generation on the wavelength of 1919 nm reaches up to 80 mW at the power of the pumping radiation of 1.1 W. The generation linewidth is equal to 70 kHz. Relative intensity noises of the optical radiation do not exceed the level of 70 dB/Hz with the maximum at the frequency of 1.2 MHz.

As a new type of carbon-based material, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) have attracted much attention due to their unique physical structure and optical properties. In this paper, we propose the application of CNFs as the saturable absorber (SA) and established a passively mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) for verification. By mixing sodium carboxymethyl cellulose solution with CNFs, CNF SA was prepared, the nonlinearity of which was tested as follows: the modulation depth was ∼ 1.3 % , and the saturation intensity was 18 M W / c m 2 . By inserting the CNF SA into the TDFL ring cavity, mode-locked laser pulses of a central wavelength of 1954.47 nm and a 3 dB bandwidth of 5.93 nm were obtained. The spectral pulse width was 1.31 ps; the repetition frequency was 32.68 MHz; and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was calculated to be ∼ 57 d B . To our knowledge, this is the first time that CNFs have been reported as SAs for mode-locked lasers in the 2 µm wavelength region. Our work provides a new reference for using carbon-based materials in the realization of ultrafast lasers, and the proposed CNFs are highly advantageous in the development of ultrahigh-speed optical modulators and next-generation high-performance nonlinear photonic devices.

Partial and total splenectomies are associated with a high risk of substantial blood loss. Lasers operating at wavelengths strongly absorbed by water have the potential to improve hemostasis and cut while providing a narrow zone of thermal damage. The aim of this study is to compare a thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) emitting a wavelength of 1940 nm and a diode laser (DL) operating at 1470 nm for spleen surgery in a pig model. A partial splenectomy and spleen incisions were made in 12 animals using the two laser devices. The hemostasis was evaluated visually during surgeries. Post-mortem and histopathological evaluations were done on days 0, 7, and 14 following surgery. Neither TDFL nor DL caused bleeding on day 0 or delayed bleeding. On day 14, pale streaks at the site of incision were slightly wider after cutting with DL than with TDFL. Histological analysis revealed a carbonized zone with exudation and a deeper zone of thermal tissue damage on day 0. The width of the thermal changes was 655.26 &plusmn, 107.70 &mu, m for TDFL and 1413.37 &plusmn, 111.85 &mu, m for DL. On day 7, a proliferation of fibroblasts and splenocytes was visible, as well as a formation of multinucleated giant cells adjacent to the residues of carbonization. The zone of thermal damage was broader for DL (1157.5 &plusmn, 262.77 &mu, m) than for TDFL (682.22 &plusmn, 116.58 &mu, m). On day 14, cutting sites were filled with connective and granulation tissues with the residues of carbonization. The zone of thermal damage was narrower for TDFL (761.65 &plusmn, 34.3 &mu, m) than for DL (1609.82 &plusmn, 202.22 &mu, m). Thus, both lasers are efficient in spleen surgery, providing good hemostasis. However, TDFL produces a narrower zone of thermal damage, which suggests its better efficiency for spleen surgery, especially when performing more precise procedures.

In a passively mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser within the anomalous dispersion regime, we experimentally demonstrate conventional soliton (CS), hybrid (noise-like pulse (NLP) and solitons), as well as switchable single-wavelength and synchronous dual-wavelength NLP regimes. By properly adjusting the PCs, we can switch between CS to hybrid and single- or dual-wavelength NLP regimes. With sufficient pumping power and through manual polarization adjustments, self-starting mode locking at 1996 nm can be observed. At the pump power of 2.5 W, stable mode locking with an output power of 86 mW is obtained. When generating the CS state, Kelly sidebands due to the spectral interference of dispersive waves are observed. Keeping the pump power at 2.5 W but with a modification of the polarization adjustment we can switch to five different regimes involving NLPs with squared envelope. The noise-like nature of the squared pulses was confirmed in each case through an autocorrelation measurement. By additional adjusting of the PCs, single- and synchronous dual-wavelength squared NLPs can be generated, at either one of two wavelengths in the former case, and at both simultaneously in the latter. The pulse trains from the single-wavelength operations display a small difference in their repetition frequencies inherently determined by intracavity dispersion, whereas in dual-wavelength operation the pulse train displays a single repetition rate whose value is intermediate between the single-wavelength frequencies. The obtained results are valuable to deepen our understanding on the formation of CS and dual-wavelength pulses with noise-like squared profiles in fiber lasers.

We report on improvements of mode-locked soliton pulse energy and peak power in a thulium-doped fiber laser. At the pump power of 370 mW, conventional soliton can be first generated using nonlinear polarization rotation technology. By increasing the pump power to 550 mW and appropriately adjusting cavity polarization state, the conventional soliton pulse can be converted into the Gaussian pulse. Due to dispersion management, excess accumulation of nonlinear phase shifts in the cavity can be avoided. In this case, the pulse energy and peak power can be increased from 77 pJ to 1.38 nJ and from 106.9 W to 2.67 kW, respectively. These improvements indicate that the Gaussian pulse operation can effectively enhance the pulse energy and peak power of the thulium-doped fiber laser.

In this work, a 2.0-µm mode-locked thulium doped fiber laser is demonstrated using zinc oxide (ZnO) as the saturable absorber (SA) in a thulium doped fiber laser (TDFL). The ZnO nanorods was prepared by the facile hydrothermal method, and then embedded in polyethylene oxide composite film to form the SA. The laser is capable of generating soliton pulses at a central wavelength of 1945.45 nm with a 3-dB bandwidth of 3.47 nm. The pulse width is measured to be 1.395 ps, only slightly higher than the calculated transform-limited pulse width of 1.15 ps. The peak power of the generated mode-locked pulses is then calculated to be as high as 41.88 W, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 50.5 dB. The fabricated ZnO film in this work would allow the generation of mode-locked pulses, which could be useful for applications in spectroscopy and medicine due to the eye-safe and highly sensitive nature of the 2.0-µm region.

A 1.7 μm gain-switched thulium-doped all-fiber laser with a master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) configuration, utilizing a bandpass fiber filter and a 1550 nm erbium/ytterbium-codoped fiber MOPA, is demonstrated. The influences of pump pulse parameters (repetition rate and pulse duration) and laser cavity structures (ring and linear) on the laser performances were experimentally investigated. To the best of our knowledge, the power quenching and drop were observed in the 1.7 μm gain-switched thulium-doped fiber lasers for the first time, resulting from the mode-locked-resembling operation and nonlinear effects. Moreover, the fiber ring-cavity laser was more stable than the linear-cavity laser in the time domain and power. Finally, a laser with a maximum average power of 1.687 W, a slope efficiency of 19.7%, a single-pulse energy of 16.87 μJ, a pulse width of 425 ns, a repetition rate of 100 kHz and a peak power of 39.69 W was obtained.

The rectangular noise-like pulse (NLP) and dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) were generated in a thulium-doped fiber laser based on a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). The NLP and DSR pulses could be switched in the fiber laser by properly manipulating the intracavitary polarization controller (PC). The two different states are investigated by using the optical spectrum and radio frequency spectrum. The center wavelength of NLP is 1930.11 nm with the 3-dB bandwidth of 12.19 nm, and aforesaid parameters of DSR is 1944.04 nm, 10.36 nm, respectively. The radio frequency spectrum of the NLP pulse has two sub-peaks obviously, corresponding to the unstable long pulse train in the time domain. These findings may contribute to distinguish two rectangular pulses and lucubrate the dynamics of the rectangular pulses.

A multi-wavelength thulium-doped fiber laser based on a Sagnac loop mirror is demonstrated. By increasing pump power and adjusting the state of polarization, stable laser outputs with single, double, three, four or five wavelengths are realized within the spectral range between 1954 and 1975 nm. The laser has a high side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 40–50 dB.
