Tensor fields are useful for modeling the structure of biological tissues. The challenge to measure tensor fields involves acquiring sufficient data of scalar measurements that are physically achievable and reconstructing tensors from as few projections as possible for efficient applications in medical imaging. In this paper, we present a filtered back-projection algorithm for the reconstruction of a symmetric second-rank tensor field from directional X-ray projections about three axes. The tensor field is decomposed into a solenoidal and irrotational component, each of three unknowns. Using the Fourier projection theorem, a filtered back-projection algorithm is derived to reconstruct the solenoidal and irrotational components from projections acquired around three axes. A simple illustrative phantom consisting of two spherical shells and a 3D digital cardiac diffusion image obtained from diffusion tensor MRI of an excised human heart are used to simulate directional X-ray projections. The simulations validate the mathematical derivations and demonstrate reasonable noise properties of the algorithm. The decomposition of the tensor field into solenoidal and irrotational components provides insight into the development of algorithms for reconstructing tensor fields with sufficient samples in terms of the type of directional projections and the necessary orbits for the acquisition of the projections of the tensor field.

This paper presents two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations of a half-scale geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) bridge abutment during construction and bridge load application. The backfill soil was characterized using a nonlinear elastoplastic model that incorporates a hyperbolic stress–strain relationship and the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion. Geogrid reinforcements were characterized using linearly elastic elements with orthotropic behavior. Various interfaces were included to simulate the interaction between the abutment components. Results from the 2D and 3D simulations were compared with physical model test measurements from the longitudinal and transverse sections of a GRS bridge abutment. Facing displacements and bridge seat settlements for the 2D and 3D simulations agree well with measured values, with the 2D-simulated values larger than the 3D-simulated values due to boundary condition effects. Results from the 3D simulation are in reasonable agreement with measurements from the longitudinal and transverse sections. The 2D simulation can also reasonably capture the static response of GRS bridge abutments and is generally more conservative than the 3D simulation.

Objectives This study aimed at developing dictionary learning (DL) based compressed sensing (CS) reconstruction for randomly undersampled five-dimensional (5D) MR Spectroscopic Imaging (3D spatial + 2D spectral) data acquired in prostate cancer patients and healthy controls, and test its feasibility at 8x and 12x undersampling factors. Materials and methods Prospectively undersampled 5D echo-planar J-resolved spectroscopic imaging (EP-JRESI) data were acquired in nine prostate cancer (PCa) patients and three healthy males. The 5D EP-JRESI data were reconstructed using DL and compared with gradient sparsity-based Total Variation (TV) and Perona-Malik (PM) methods. A hybrid reconstruction technique, Dictionary Learning-Total Variation (DLTV), was also designed to further improve the quality of reconstructed spectra. Results The CS reconstruction of prospectively undersampled (8x and 12x) 5D EP-JRESI data acquired in prostate cancer and healthy subjects were performed using DL, DLTV, TV and PM. It is evident that the hybrid DLTV method can unambiguously resolve 2D J-resolved peaks including myo-inositol, citrate, creatine, spermine and choline. Conclusion Improved reconstruction of the accelerated 5D EP-JRESI data was observed using the hybrid DLTV. Accelerated acquisition of in vivo 5D data with as low as 8.33% samples (12x) corresponds to a total scan time of 14 min as opposed to a fully sampled scan that needs a total duration of 2.4 h (TR = 1.2 s, 32 $${k}_{x}$$ k x ×16 $${k}_{y}$$ k y ×8 $${k}_{z}$$ k z , 512 $${t}_{2}$$ t 2 and 64 $${t}_{1}$$ t 1 ).

The aim of this study was accuracy assessment of placed implants in full-arch cases using specific software and hardware to perform static computer-assisted implantology and immediately loaded prostheses. The degree of deviation existing between planned and achieved implants was carried out by a new noninvasive measurement procedure of the implant position performed on stone casts.Fourteen stone casts retrieved from 14 full-arch fully guided implant treatments were selected to perform the study. Each cast, manufactured for the surgical treatment by using a specific laboratory kit, was obtained from the respective surgical guide. A sleeve for each implant was embedded into the guide, which helped the examiners to manufacture a stone cast per guide containing the implant analogs, which was used to recover the final position of the planned implants. A total sample of 60 implants were assessed. The postoperative casts, poured to produce the immediate prostheses, were then processed by a contact (or tactile) scanner, and the generated standard tessellation language (STL) files were overlapped (best-fit alignment) using engineering software that revealed all the measured discrepancies. In terms of accuracy, differences relating to arch, assessed bone quality, implant length, and drill length (prolongation short or long) were reported.The use of a noninvasive tactile scanner revealed mean entry point horizontal deviations of 0.30 mm (SD: 0.39 mm), mean entry point vertical deviations of 0.20 mm (SD: 0.25 mm), mean apical horizontal deviations of 0.50 mm (SD: 0.73 mm), and mean apical vertical deviations of 0.24 mm (SD: 0.28 mm). The frontal and lateral angular deviations were investigated, and corresponding mean values of 1.99 degrees (SD: 2.30 degrees) and 1.80 degrees (SD: 2.44 degrees) were detected.The reported results demonstrate that the contact tactile scan is a viable and biologic way to assess implant deviations.

To assess the ability of four-dimensional (4D) flow MRI to measure hepatic arterial hemodynamics by determining the effects of spatial resolution and respiratory motion suppression in vitro and its applicability in vivo with comparison to two-dimensional (2D) phase-contrast MRI.A dynamic hepatic artery phantom and 20 consecutive volunteers were scanned. The accuracies of Cartesian 4D flow sequences with k-space reordering and navigator gating at four spatial resolutions (0.5- to 1-mm isotropic) and navigator acceptance windows (± 8 to ± 2 mm) and one 2D phase-contrast sequence (0.5-mm in -plane) were assessed in vitro at 3 T. Two sequences centered on gastroduodenal and hepatic artery branches were assessed in vivo for intra - and interobserver agreement and compared to 2D phase-contrast.In vitro, higher spatial resolution led to a greater decrease in error than narrower navigator window (30.5 to -4.67% vs -6.64 to -4.67% for flow). In vivo, hepatic and gastroduodenal arteries were more often visualized with the higher resolution sequence (90 vs 71%). Despite similar interobserver agreement (κ = 0.660 and 0.704), the higher resolution sequence had lower variability for area (CV = 20.04 vs 30.67%), flow (CV = 34.92 vs 51.99%), and average velocity (CV = 26.47 vs 44.76%). 4D flow had lower differences between inflow and outflow at the hepatic artery bifurcation (11.03 ± 5.05% and 15.69 ± 6.14%) than 2D phase-contrast (28.77 ± 21.01%).High-resolution 4D flow can assess hepatic artery anatomy and hemodynamics with improved accuracy, greater vessel visibility, better interobserver reliability, and internal consistency.• Motion-suppressed Cartesian four-dimensional (4D) flow MRI with higher spatial resolution provides more accurate measurements even when accepted respiratory motion exceeds voxel size. • 4D flow MRI with higher spatial resolution provides substantial interobserver agreement for visualization of hepatic artery branches. • Lower peak and average velocities and a trend toward better internal consistency were observed with 4D flow MRI as compared to 2D phase-contrast.

PurposeTo extend the MR MultiTasking-based Multidimensional Assessment of Cardiovascular System (MT-MACS) technique with larger spatial coverage and water-fat separation for comprehensive aortocardiac assessment.MethodsMT-MACS adopts a low-rank tensor image model for 7D imaging, with three spatial dimensions for volumetric imaging, one cardiac motion dimension for cine imaging, one respiratory motion dimension for free-breathing imaging, one T2-prepared inversion recovery time dimension for multi-contrast assessment, and one T2*-decay time dimension for water-fat separation. Nine healthy subjects were recruited for the 3T study. Overall image quality was scored on bright-blood (BB), dark-blood (DB), and gray-blood (GB) contrasts using a 4-point scale (0-poor to 3-excellent) by two independent readers, and their interreader agreement was evaluated. Myocardial wall thickness and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were quantified on DB and BB contrasts, respectively. The agreement in these metrics between MT-MACS and conventional breath-held, electrocardiography-triggered 2D sequences were evaluated.ResultsMT-MACS provides both water-only and fat-only images with excellent image quality (average score=3.725/3.780/3.835/3.890 for BB/DB/GB/fat-only images) and moderate to high interreader agreement (weighted Cohen's kappa value=0.727/0.668/1.000/1.000 for BB/DB/GB/fat-only images). There were good to excellent agreements in myocardial wall thickness measurements (intraclass correlation coefficients [ICC]=0.781/0.929/0.680/0.878 for left atria/left ventricle/right atria/right ventricle) and LVEF quantification (ICC=0.716) between MT-MACS and 2D references. All measurements were within the literature range of healthy subjects.ConclusionThe refined MT-MACS technique provides multi-contrast, phase-resolved, and water-fat imaging of the aortocardiac systems and allows evaluation of anatomy and function. Clinical validation is warranted.

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting techniques have emerged as the most popular methods to fabricate 3D-engineered tissues; however, there are challenges in simultaneously satisfying the requirements of high cell density (HCD), high cell viability, and fine fabrication resolution. In particular, bioprinting resolution of digital light processing–based 3D bioprinting suffers with increasing bioink cell density due to light scattering. We developed a novel approach to mitigate this scattering-induced deterioration of bioprinting resolution. The inclusion of iodixanol in the bioink enables a 10-fold reduction in light scattering and a substantial improvement in fabrication resolution for bioinks with an HCD. Fifty-micrometer fabrication resolution was achieved for a bioink with 0.1 billion per milliliter cell density. To showcase the potential application in tissue/organ 3D bioprinting, HCD thick tissues with fine vascular networks were fabricated. The tissues were viable in a perfusion culture system, with endothelialization and angiogenesis observed after 14 days of culture.

International audience; Craniosynostosis is a rare and complex pathology, and visuospatial skills are necessary for a good understanding of the condition. While the use of three-dimensional (3D) models has improved the understanding of complex craniofacial anatomy, no study has evaluated the impact of this teaching support on long-term retention. Our randomized controlled trial was designed to compare the long-term retention of information with 3D-printed models of four types of craniosynostosis versus classic 3D reconstructions displayed in two-dimensional (2D) among undergraduate students. All students benefited from the same standardized course followed by the manipulation of the learning tool associated with the group for 15 min. Long-term retention was assessed by the capability to properly recognize different types of craniosynostosis 3 weeks after the course. Eighty-five students were enrolled. Previous educational achievements and baseline visuospatial skills were similar between the groups. Stiff joints formed after trauma, surgery or immobilization are frustrating for surgeons, therapists and patients alike. Unfortunately, the study of contracture is limited by available animal model systems, which focus on the utilization of larger mammals and joint trauma. Here we describe a novel mouse-based model system for the generation of joint contracture using 3D-printed clamshell casts. With this model system we are able to generate both reversible and irreversible contractures of the knee and ankle. Four- or 8-month-old female mice were casted for either 2 or 3 weeks before liberation. All groups formed measurable contractures of the knee and ankle. Younger mice immobilized for less time formed reversible contractures of the knee and ankle. We were able to generate irreversible contracture with either longer immobilization time or the utilization of older mice. The contracture formation translated into differences in gait, which were detectable using the DigiGait(®) analysis system. This novel model system provides a higher throughput, lower cost and more powerful tool in studying the molecular and cellular mechanisms considering the large existing pool of transgenic/knockout murine strains.

The first goal of this study was to develop reliable three-dimensional definitions of alignment for the ankle, subtalar, and hindfoot joints. These alignments are based on three-dimensional morphological features derived from renderings of the bones obtained from weightbearing computer tomography. The second goal was to establish a database quantifying the alignment of the ankle, subtalar, and hindfoot joints in a healthy population during weightbearing bilateral standing. This level 1 study was performed on 95 normal subjects in which random subjects were recruited into a control group. Weightbearing computed tomography scans of the leg were collected in neutral, bilateral, standing posture. In 30 of the subjects, both the left and right leg was scanned. Six alignment parameters for each joint were calculated from morphological measurements conducted on three-dimensional renderings of the bones. Intra- and intertester reliability was assessed from repeated measurements by several testers. Analysis of variance statistics of the alignment parameters showed no statistical differences due to age, gender, or foot side. Intraclass correlation coefficient analysis showed excellent inter- and intratester reliability. It was concluded that the alignment process is comprehensive and reliable. Therefore, without classification by gender or age, it may be used as a foundation for quantifying abnormal alignment associated with various ankle deformities. Clinical significance: The alignment methodology and control database may be used to diagnose ankle, subtalar, and hindfoot misalignment. It can also serve as basis for surgical planning designed to restore normal alignment in various hindfoot pathologies, such as ankle realignment in total ankle replacement.

This study presents the design of three-dimensional biased proportional navigation guidance laws for arrival at a stationary target along a desired direction based on spatial rotation of predicted final velocity vector. The focus is on full constructive derivation using vector-form expressions without introducing local representation of rotation such as Euler angles or quaternions. The proposed approach synthesises the bias command in the form of an angular velocity vector through realisation of the predictive control design philosophy, the direction which has been unexplored in a three-dimensional setting. The proposed approach avoids heuristic choices and approximations in the design process and hence overcomes the limitation of earlier studies. The vector-form design approach provides theoretical and practical advantages including rigour in derivation, clear geometric understandings about the problem provided by identification of the most effective direction for rotation of final velocity, independence from selection of a fixed coordinate system, avoidance of singularities in local representations, more direct trajectory shaping, and simple implementation.

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the morphological characteristics of rheumatic (RMVD) and degenerative mitral valve diseases (DMVD) based on three-dimensional (3D) printing model before and after surgery and to explore the potential implication of the 3D printing model for mitral valve (MV) repair.Methods: 3D transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) data of the MV were acquired in 45 subjects (15 with RMVD, 15 with DMVD, and 15 with normal MV anatomy). 3D printing models of the MV were constructed by creating molds to be printed with water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol, then filled with room temperature vulcanizing silicone. The parameters of the annulus and leaflet of the MV were acquired and analyzed using the 3D printing model. Mitral valve repair was simulated on 3D printing models of 10 subjects and compared with the actual operation performed on patients. The effects of surgery were assessed by evaluating the changes in coaptation length (CL) and the annular height to commissural width ratio (AHCWR) before and after MV repairs. The correlations of the grade of mitral regurgitation with CL and AHCWR were analyzed.Results: 3D silicone MV models were all successfully constructed based on 3D TEE data. Compared with the normal groups, the mitral annulus size in the RMVD groups showed no significant differences. In contrast, mitral annulus in DMVD groups was dilated and flattened with diameters of anteroposterior, anterolateral-posteromedial, commissural width, annular circumferences, and area increased. Mitral repair was successfully simulated on 10 models with significant increase in leaflet coaptation area both in vivo and in vitro. Good agreement was observed in CL and AHCWR after surgery in the 3D printing model compared with real surgery on the patient valve. The grade of mitral regurgitation correlated inversely with CL (r = ‐0.87, P < 0.01) and AHCWR (r = ‐0.79, P < 0.01). Mitral valve repair was performed twice in one model to assess which provided a better outcome.Conclusions: 3D printing models of the MV based on 3D TEE data could be used in morphological analysis of the MV before and after surgery in RMVD and DMVD. Surgery simulation on 3D printing models could provide valuable information concerning morphological changes after surgery, with are closely associated with clinical outcomes.

The medico-legal identification is based on a set of discriminatory characteristics between individuals in their biological, social, cultural, religious, legal and economic framework. The purpose of this study was to characterize the biological variation, regarding gender and age, in a Portuguese population. A three-dimensional (3D) analysis of 215 mandibles (7–20 years old) from the database of the Laboratory of Forensic Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (CE-112/2019) was performed. A total of 13 cephalometric points defined 10 linear variables and 7 angular variables, on 3D reconstructions from ConeBeam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images. Intra and inter-observer errors were analyzed by Technical Measurement Error test. A descriptive statistics was performed. To verify the influence of gender and age on the variables and to determine its predictive value, ANOVA and Logistic Regression Analysis were performed. Gender and age influence most of the linear variables, however, the same is not true for angular variables. In the analysis of all variables, the model has a reasonable level of sensitivity (67.8%) according to gender. For the age prediction, with all variables, the model presented a reasonable level of sensitivity, classifying 79.4% of the individuals. The results supported, with a high level of statistical significance, an adequate recognition of individuals highlighting the identification and criminal imputability of Portuguese individuals.

Background Endoscopic transnasal transclival intradural surgery is limited by a high postoperative cerebrospinal fluid leak rate. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of three-dimensional printing to create a personalized, rigid scaffold for clival reconstruction. Methods Two different types of clivectomy were performed in 5 specimens with the aid of neuronavigation, and 11 clival reconstructions were simulated. They were repaired with polylactide, three-dimensional–printed scaffolds that were manually designed in a computer-aided environment based either on the real or on the predicted defect. Scaffolds were printed with a fused filament fabrication technique and different offsets. They were positioned and fixed either following the gasket seal technique or with screws. Postdissection radiological evaluation of scaffold position was performed in all cases. In 3 specimens, the cerebrospinal fluid leak pressure point was measured immediately after reconstruction. Results The production process took approximately 30 hours. The designed scaffolds were satisfactory when no offset was added. Wings were added during the design to allow for screw positioning, but broke in 30% of cases. Radiological assessment documented maximal accuracy of scaffold positioning when the scaffold was created on the real defect; accuracy was satisfactory when the predicted clivectomy was performed under neuronavigation guidance. The cerebrospinal fluid leak pressure point was significantly higher when the scaffold was fixed with screws compared with the gasket technique. Conclusions In this preclinical setting, additive manufacturing allows the creation of customized scaffolds that are effective in reconstructing even large and geometrically complex clival defects.

Background and Purpose Background phase errors in 4D Flow MRI may negatively impact blood flow quantification. In this study, we assessed their impact on cerebrovascular flow volume measurements, evaluated the benefit of manual image-based correction, and assessed the potential of a convolutional neural network (CNN), a form of deep learning, to directly infer the correction vector field. Methods With IRB waiver of informed consent, we retrospectively identified 96 MRI exams from 48 patients who underwent cerebrovascular 4D Flow MRI from October 2015 to 2020. Flow measurements of the anterior, posterior, and venous circulation were performed to assess inflow-outflow error and the benefit of manual image-based phase error correction. A CNN was then trained to directly infer the phase-error correction field, without segmentation, from 4D Flow volumes to automate correction, reserving from 23 exams for testing. Statistical analyses included Spearman correlation, Bland-Altman, Wilcoxon-signed rank (WSR) and F-tests. Results Prior to correction, there was strong correlation between inflow and outflow (ρ = 0.833–0.947) measurements with the largest discrepancy in the venous circulation. Manual phase error correction improved inflow-outflow correlation (ρ = 0.945–0.981) and decreased variance (p F-test). Fully automated CNN correction was non-inferior to manual correction with no significant differences in correlation (ρ = 0.971 vs ρ = 0.982) or bias (p = 0.82, Wilcoxon-Signed Rank test) of inflow and outflow measurements. Conclusions Residual background phase error can impair inflow-outflow consistency of cerebrovascular flow volume measurements. A CNN can be used to directly infer the phase-error vector field to fully automate phase error correction.

Characterization of Peyronie’s disease (PD) involves manual goniometry and penile length measurement. These techniques neglect volume loss or hourglass deformities. Inter-provider variability complicates accuracy. Using 3D-printed models, we aimed to evaluate measurement accuracy and variability and establish computational assessment workflows. Five digital phantoms were created: 13.0 cm cylinder, 13.0 cm hourglass cylinder, 15.0 cm cylinder with 40° angulation, 12.0 cm straight penis, and 12.9 cm PD penis with 68° angulation and hourglass. Lengths, volumes, and angles were determined computationally. Each phantom was 3D-printed. Ten urology providers determined lengths, angles, and volumes with measuring tape, goniometer, and volume calculator. Provider versus computational measurements were compared to determine accuracy using t-tests or Wilcoxon rank-sum tests. No significant differences were observed between manual assessment of length of penile models and designed length in penile models. Average curvature angles from providers for bent cylinder and PD phantoms were 38.3° ± 3.9° (p = 0.25) and 57.5° ± 7.2° (p = 0.006), respectively. When assessing for volume, hourglass cylinder and bent cylinder showed significant differences between designed volume and provider averages. All assessments of length, angle, and volume showed significant provider variability. Our results suggest manual measurements suffer from inaccuracy and variability. Computational workflows are useful for improved accuracy and volume assessment.

Polysaccharide scaffolds have been successfully employed to reconstruct environments that sustain skin tissue regeneration after injuries. Three-dimensional (3D) advanced additive manufacturing technologies allow creating scaffolds with controlled and reproducible macro- and micro-structure that improve the quality of the restored tissue to favor spontaneous repair. However, when persistent inflammation occurs, the physiological tissue healing capacity is reduced, like in the presence of pathologies like diabetes, vascular diseases, chronic infection, and others. In these circumstances, the bioavailability of therapeutic adjuncts like the growth factors in addition to the standard treatments represents undoubtedly a promising strategy to accelerate the healing of skin lesions. Precisely designed polysaccharide scaffolds obtained by 3D printing represent a robust platform that can be further implemented with the controlled delivery of bioactive adjuncts. Human elastin-like polypeptides (HELPs) are stimuli-responsive biopolymers. Their structure allows the integration of domains endowed with biological functionality, making them attractive compounds to prepare composites with smart properties. In the present study, 3D-printed alginate and chitosan scaffolds were combined with the HELP components. The HELP biopolymer was fused to the epidermal growth factor (EGF) as the bioactive domain. Different constructs were prepared and the stimuli-responsive behavior as well as the biological activity were evaluated, suggesting that these smart bioactive composites are suitable to realize multifunctional dressings that sustain the local release of therapeutic adjuncts.

In this featured review manuscript, the aim is to present a critical survey on the processes available for fabricating bioartificial organs (BAOs). The focus will be on hollow tubular organs for the transport of anabolites and catabolites, i.e., vessels, trachea, esophagus, ureter and urethra, and intestine. First, the anatomic hierarchical structures of tubular organs, as well as their principal physiological functions, will be presented, as this constitutes the mandatory requirements for effectively designing and developing physiologically relevant BAOs. Second, 3D bioprinting, solution electrospinning, and melt electrowriting will be introduced, together with their capacity to match the requirements imposed by designing scaffolds compatible with the anatomical and physiologically relevant environment. Finally, the intrinsic correlation between processes, materials, and cells will be critically discussed, and directives defining the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities offered by each process will be proposed for assisting bioengineers in the selection of the appropriate process for the target BAO and its specific required functions.

Three-dimensional printing is a technology in expansion in the medical field. It also presents many applications in orthopedics. Our review article aims to describe 3D printing, types of 3D printers, and its use in the orthopedic field. 3D models can be created using tomography scans. Those models can then be manipulated, even simulating surgeries. It is possible to print biomodels, which will help us understand deformities and plan surgeries. Orthopedic surgeons must be updated in these disruptive technologies that may help their daily practice. Level of Evidence V, Expert opinion. O objetivo deste artigo de revisão é descrever o que é a impressão 3D, seus tipos e suas aplicações na ortopedia. Modelos em 3 dimensões podem ser criados a partir da tomografia computadorizada. Estes modelos podem ser manipulados em softwares específicos, onde inclusive cirurgias podem ser simuladas. Utilizando impressoras 3D podemos criar biomodelos que nos ajudam a compreender deformidades e planejar cirurgias. Infantile hemangioma (IH) is the most prevalent type of vascular tumor in infants. The pathophysiology of IH is unknown. The tissue structure and physiology of two-dimensional cell cultures differ greatly from those in vivo, and spontaneous regression often occurs during tumor formation in nude mice and has severely limited research into the pathogenesis and development of IH. By decellularizing porcine aorta, we attempted to obtain vascular-specific extracellular matrix as the bioink for fabricating micropattern arrays of varying diameters via microcontact printing. We then constructed IH-derived CD31+ hemangioma endothelial cell three-dimensional microtumor models. The vascular-specific and decellularized extracellular matrix was suitable for the growth of infantile hemangioma-derived endothelial cells. The KEGG signaling pathway analysis revealed enrichment primarily in stem cell pluripotency, RAS, and PI3KAkt compared to the two-dimensional cell model according to RNA sequencing. Propranolol, the first-line medication for IH, was also used to test the model’s applicability. We also found that metformin had some impact on the condition. The three-dimensional microtumor models of CD31+ hemangioma endothelial cells were more robust and efficient experimental models for IH mechanistic exploration and drug screening.

Bone is a highly vascularized tissue and relies on the angiogenesis and response of cells in the immediate environmental niche at the defect site for regeneration. Hence, the ability to control angiogenesis and cellular responses during osteogenesis has important implications in tissue-engineered strategies. Self-assembling ionic-complementary peptides have received much interest as they mimic the natural extracellular matrix. Three-dimensional (3D)-printed biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) scaffolds coated with self-assembling DAR 16-II peptide provide a support template with the ability to recruit and enhance the adhesion of cells. In vitro studies demonstrated prompt the adhesion of both human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC), favoring endothelial cell activation toward an angiogenic phenotype. The SEM-EDS and protein micro bicinchoninic acid (BCA) assays demonstrated the efficacy of the coating. Whole proteomic analysis of DAR 16-II-treated HUVECs demonstrated the upregulation of proteins involved in cell adhesion (HABP2), migration (AMOTL1), cytoskeletal re-arrangement (SHC1, TMOD2), immuno-modulation (AMBP, MIF), and morphogenesis (COL4A1). In vivo studies using DAR-16-II-coated scaffolds provided an architectural template, promoting cell colonization, osteogenesis, and angiogenesis. In conclusion, DAR 16-II acts as a proactive angiogenic factor when adsorbed onto BCP scaffolds and provides a simple and effective functionalization step to facilitate the translation of tailored 3D-printed BCP scaffolds for clinical applications.

The purpose of this study was to report the clinical validation of the posture analyzing and virtual reconstruction device (PAViR) system, focusing on the accuracy of sagittal spinal parameters, compared with the EOS imaging system. Seventy patients diagnosed with segmental and somatic dysfunction were recruited between February 2020 and November 2020. Each patient was examined using the EOS imaging system and PAViR; the sagittal parameters of human body posture [forward head posture (FHP), T1 tilt angle (T1t), knee flexion angle (KF), lumbar lordosis angle (LL), and pelvic tilt angle (PT)] were analyzed to verify the correlation between the results of the two devices. The median differences in the results of the two devices showed significant differences in FHP (T4-frontal head and T4-auditory canal), T1t, and PT. In the correlation analysis, the values of FHP (C7-auditory canal, T4-frontal head, and T4-auditory canal), T1t, and PT showed a moderate correlation between the two devices (r = 0.741, 0.795, 0.761, 0.621, and 0.692, respectively) (p < 0.001). The KF and LL was fairly correlated (r = 0.514 and 0.536, respectively) (p = 0.004, both). This study presents the potential of a novel skeletal imaging system without radiation exposure, based on a 3D red-green-blue-depth camera (PAViR), as a next-generation diagnostic tool by estimating more accurate parameters through continuous multi-data-based upgrades with artificial intelligence technology.

Nowadays, the optical measuring approach is widely used in the precision machining industry due to high measurement efficiency. In the industry, measuring devices play a crucial role in the field of quality assurance. In practical engineering, the green measurement approach indeed plays an important role in the industry currently. In this study, a state-of-the-art green technique for three-dimensional (3D) optical measurements without environmental pollution is demonstrated, which is an environmentally friendly optical measurement method. This method can perform precise optical measurement without matte coatings. This work dealt with the possibility of measuring four metal components that were not sprayed with anything. The differences in the optical measurement results between with and without matte coatings were investigated and analyzed. It was found that the research result has practical value in the precision machining industry because average size errors of the four measurement objects with different surface properties can be controlled at about 3 µm, 0.1 µm, 0.5 µm, and 9 µm. A technical database with industrial value was established for optical measurements of metal components with different surface properties without matte coatings, which can serve as an alternative to the conventional 3D optical measurement.

To compare a 3D preoperative planning image and fluoroscopic image, a 3D bone position estimation system that displays 3D images in response to changes in the position of fluoroscopic images was developed. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of the estimated position of 3D bone images with reference to fluoroscopic images. Bone positions were estimated from reference points on a fluoroscopic image compared with those on a 3D image. The four reference markers positional relationships on the fluoroscopic image were compared with those on the 3D image to evaluate whether a 3D image may be drawn by tracking positional changes in the radius model. Intra-class correlations coefficients for reference marker distances between the fluoroscopic image and 3D image were 0.98–0.99. Average differences between measured values on the fluoroscopic image and 3D bone image for each marker corresponding to the direction of the bone model were 1.1 ± 0.7 mm, 2.4 ± 1.8 mm, 1.4 ± 0.8 mm, and 2.0 ± 1.6 mm in the anterior-posterior view, ulnar side lateral view, posterior-anterior view, and radial side lateral view, respectively. Marker positions were more accurate in the anterior-posterior and posterior-anterior views than in the radial and ulnar side lateral views. This system helps in real-time comparison of dynamic changes in preoperative 3D and intraoperative fluoroscopy images.

The demand for high-throughput electron tomography is rapidly increasing in biological and material sciences. However, this 3D imaging technique is computationally bottlenecked by alignment and reconstruction which runs from hours to days. We demonstrate real-time tomography with dynamic 3D tomographic visualization to enable rapid interpretation of specimen structure immediately as data is collected on an electron microscope. Using geometrically complex chiral nanoparticles, we show volumetric interpretation can begin in less than 10 minutes and a high-quality tomogram is available within 30 minutes. Real-time tomography is integrated into tomviz, an open-source and cross-platform 3D data analysis tool that contains intuitive graphical user interfaces (GUI), to enable any scientist to characterize biological and material structure in 3D.

Fluid pressure develops transiently within mechanically-loaded, cell-embedding hydrogels, but its magnitude depends on the intrinsic material properties of the hydrogel and cannot be easily altered. The recently developed melt-electrowriting (MEW) technique enables three-dimensional printing of structured fibrous mesh with small fibre diameter (20 μm). The MEW mesh with 20 μm fibre diameter can synergistically increase the instantaneous mechanical stiffness of soft hydrogels. However, the reinforcing mechanism of the MEW meshes is not well understood, and may involve load-induced fluid pressurisation. Here, we examined the reinforcing effect of MEW meshes in three hydrogels: gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA), agarose and alginate, and the role of load-induced fluid pressurisation in the MEW reinforcement. We tested the hydrogels with and without MEW mesh (i.e., hydrogel alone, and MEW-hydrogel composite) using micro-indentation and unconfined compression, and analysed the mechanical data using biphasic Hertz and mixture models. We found that the MEW mesh altered the tension-to-compression modulus ratio differently for hydrogels that are cross-linked differently, which led to a variable change to their load-induced fluid pressurisation. MEW meshes only enhanced the fluid pressurisation for GelMA, but not for agarose or alginate. We speculate that only covalently cross-linked hydrogels (GelMA) can effectively tense the MEW meshes, thereby enhancing the fluid pressure developed during compressive loading. In conclusion, load-induced fluid pressurisation in selected hydrogels was enhanced by MEW fibrous mesh, and may be controlled by MEW mesh of different designs in the future, thereby making fluid pressure a tunable cell growth stimulus for tissue engineering involving mechanical stimulation.

Aims Lower body half compression of bilateral secondary leg lymphoedema (LE) without relevant cardiac insufficiency gives rise to whether external leg compression may influence left ventricular (LV) function. Patients with LE were subjected to baseline two‐dimensional transthoracic echocardiography (2DTTE) for general assessment then three‐dimensional speckle‐tracking echocardiography (3DSTE) before and 1 h after lower body half external compression for LV torsion analysis. Methods and results Baseline 2DTTE was performed in the cohort of 25 LE patients, and the results were compared with those of age‐ and gender‐matched 52 healthy controls (mean age: 47.8 ± 12.8 vs. 40.7 ± 14.0 years, 24 women/1 man vs. 49 women/3 men, respectively). 3DSTE was conducted for the assessment of LV rotational mechanics where apical (AR), and basal rotations (BR) were measured before and 1 h after the use of compression class 2 (ccl 2) flat‐knitted medical compression pantyhoses (pressure range: 23–32 mmHg). 2DTTE showed significantly larger LV end‐diastolic volume and ejection fraction among LE patients compared with control subjects (108.3 ± 20.1 vs. 98.5 ± 21.7 mL, 69.8 ± 4.8 vs. 65.5 ± 4.3%, respectively) and notably smaller LV end‐systolic diameter and posterior wall thickness (28.9 ± 3.5 vs. 31.2 ± 3.4 mm, 8.1 ± 1.0 vs. 9.0 ± 1.7 mm, respectively). The results of 20 patients with LE were considered in 3DSTE examinations due to the drop‐out of five probands with technical failures. The data of four LE patients showing significant LV rotational abnormalities were managed separately, and the rotational parameters of the remaining sixteen patients did not differ significantly from those of matched controls except significant reduction of LV BR following the application of medical compression stockings (MCS) (−2.70 ± 1.26 degrees after 1 h use of pantyhose in patient group vs. −4.28 ± 2.18 degrees of the control group; P

Objectives: In this study, we present the use of case specific three- dimensional (3D) printed plastic models and custom-made acetabular implants in orthopedic surgery. Materials and methods: Between March 2018 and September 2020, surgeries were simulated using plastic models manufactured by 3D printers on the two patients with pilon fractures. Also, custom-made acetabular implants were used on two patients with an acetabular bone defect for the revision of total hip arthroplasty (THA). Results: More comfortable surgeries were experienced in pilon fractures using preoperative plastic models. Similarly, during the follow-up period, the patients that applied custom-made acetabular implants showed a fixed and well-positioning in radiographic examination. These patients did not experience any surgical complications and achieved an excellent recovery. Conclusion: Preoperative surgical simulation with 3D printed models can increase the comfort of fracture surgeries. Also, custom-made 3D printed acetabular implants can perform an important task in patients treated with revision THA surgery due to severe acetabular defects.

Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of a combination of 3D mixed-reality visualization of medical images using CarnaLife Holo (MedApp, Poland) system as a supporting tool for innovative, minimally invasive surgery/irreversible electroporation—IRA, Nano-Knife), microwave ablation (MWA)/for advanced gastrointestinal tumors. Eight liver and pancreatic tumor treatments were performed. In all of the patients undergoing laparoscopy or open surgery volume and margin were estimated by preoperative visualization. In all patients, neoplastic lesions were considered unresectable by standard methods. Methods Preoperative CT or MRI were transformed into holograms and displayed thanks to the HoloLens 2. During operation, the surgeon’s field of view was augmented with a 3D model of the patient’s relevant structures. Results The intraoperative hologram contributed to better presentation of tumor size and locations, more precise setting of needles used to irreversible electroporation and for determining ablation line in case of liver metastases. Surgeons could easily compare the real patient's anatomy to holographic visualization just before the operations. Conclusions The combination of 3D mixed-reality visualization using CarnaLife Holo with IRA, MWA and next systemic treatment (chemotherapy) might be a new way in personalized treatment of advanced cancers.

Recent developments in three-dimensional (3D) printing technology offer immense potential in fabricating scaffolds and implants for various biomedical applications, especially for bone repair and regeneration. As the availability of autologous bone sources and commercial products is limited and surgical methods do not help in complete regeneration, it is necessary to develop alternative approaches for repairing large segmental bone defects. The 3D printing technology can effectively integrate different types of living cells within a 3D construct made up of conventional micro- or nanoscale biomaterials to create an artificial bone graft capable of regenerating the damaged tissues. This article reviews the developments and applications of 3D printing in bone tissue engineering and highlights the numerous conventional biomaterials and nanomaterials that have been used in the production of 3D-printed scaffolds. A comprehensive overview of the 3D printing methods such as stereolithography (SLA), selective laser sintering (SLS), fused deposition modeling (FDM), and ink-jet 3D printing, and their technical and clinical applications in bone repair and regeneration has been provided. The review is expected to be useful for readers to gain an insight into the state-of-the-art of 3D printing of bone substitutes and their translational perspectives., Graphical Abstract

Stability diagrams are of great importance for investigating deoxidation equilibrium and controlling inclusions in molten steel. Combined with programming for calculation and drawing, the three-dimensional stability diagrams of MgO, MgO·Al2O3, and Al2O3 in the Fe–Al–Mg–O system were successfully drawn, which can visually explain the meaning of the iso-oxygen contours and the borderlines among different phases. They also offer straight evidence that the borderline method is imperfect. The three-dimensional stability diagrams can visually show more vital details that cannot be illustrated by the iso-oxygen contours. The most significant advantage of three-dimensional stability diagrams is not only judging the most stable phase in the specific component area but also visually showing the transformation trend among the phases from a three-dimensional perspective, especially when the equilibrium surfaces of these phases are relatively close. Besides, an interesting transformation of inclusions in the Fe–Al–Mg–O system was found. When the magnesium content is higher than 0.0065% and the aluminum content is lower than 0.21%, the equilibrium products of aluminum-magnesium composite deoxidation may be transformed from MgO to MgO·Al2O3 and Al2O3 in turn, which can be directly observed from the three-dimensional stability diagram based on the calculations.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect. Fetal screening ultrasound provides five views of the heart that together can detect 90% of complex CHD, but in practice, sensitivity is as low as 30%. Here, using 107,823 images from 1,326 retrospective echocardiograms and screening ultrasounds from 18- to 24-week fetuses, we trained an ensemble of neural networks to identify recommended cardiac views and distinguish between normal hearts and complex CHD. We also used segmentation models to calculate standard fetal cardiothoracic measurements. In an internal test set of 4,108 fetal surveys (0.9% CHD, >4.4 million images), the model achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.99, 95% sensitivity (95% confidence interval (CI), 84–99%), 96% specificity (95% CI, 95–97%) and 100% negative predictive value in distinguishing normal from abnormal hearts. Model sensitivity was comparable to that of clinicians and remained robust on outside-hospital and lower-quality images. The model’s decisions were based on clinically relevant features. Cardiac measurements correlated with reported measures for normal and abnormal hearts. Applied to guideline-recommended imaging, ensemble learning models could significantly improve detection of fetal CHD, a critical and global diagnostic challenge. Deep learning can facilitate identification of congenital heart disease from fetal ultrasound screening, a diagnosis that in clinical practice is often missed.

Non-invasive multi-scale and multimodal 3D characterization of heterogeneous or hierarchically structured intact mesoscale samples is of paramount importance in tackling challenging scientific problems. Scanning hard X-ray tomography techniques providing simultaneous complementary 3D information are ideally suited to such studies. However, the implementation of a robust on-site workflow remains the bottleneck for the widespread application of these powerful multimodal tomography methods. In this paper, we describe the development and implementation of such a robust, holistic workflow, including semi-automatic data reconstruction. Due to its flexibility, our approach is especially well suited for on-the-fly tuning of the experiments to study features of interest progressively at different length scales. To demonstrate the performance of the method, we studied, across multiple length scales, the elemental abundances and morphology of two complex biological systems, Arabidopsis plant seeds and mouse renal papilla samples. The proposed approach opens the way towards routine multimodal 3D characterization of intact samples by providing relevant information from pertinent sample regions in a wide range of scientific fields such as biology, geology, and material sciences.

To improve the understanding of the complex biological process underlying the development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), 3D imaging flow cytometry (3D-IFC) with transmission and side-scattered images were used to characterize hepatic stellate cell (HSC) and liver endothelial cell (LEC) morphology at single-cell resolution. In this study, HSC and LEC were obtained from biopsy-proven NASH subjects with early-stage NASH (F2-F3) and healthy controls. Here, we applied single-cell imaging and 3D digital reconstructions of healthy and diseased cells to analyze a spatially resolved set of morphometric cellular and texture parameters that showed regression with disease progression. By developing a customized autoencoder convolutional neural network (CNN) based on label-free cell transmission and side scattering images obtained from a 3D imaging flow cytometer, we demonstrated key regulated cell types involved in the development of NASH and cell classification performance superior to conventional machine learning methods.

A recurring issue with microstructure studies is specimen lighting. In particular,microscope lighting must be deployed in such a way as to highlight biologicalelements without enhancing caustic effects and diffraction. We describe herean analysis of the potential of diffractive optic approaches for addressing thislighting issue. First, an extensive study is undertaken concerning asymptoticequations in order to identify the most promising algorithm for 3Dmicrostructure analysis. Ultimately, models based on virtual light rays arediscarded in favor of a model that considers the joint computation of phase andirradiance. This paper maintains the essential goal of the study concerningbiological microstructures but offers several supplementary notes oncomputational details which provide perspectives on analyses of thearrangements of numerous objects in biological tissues.

Understanding peripheral nerve micro-anatomy can assist in the development of safe and effective neuromodulation devices. However, current approaches for imaging nerve morphology at the fiber level are either cumbersome, require substantial instrumentation, have a limited volume of view, or are limited in resolution/contrast. We present alternative methods based on MUSE (Microscopy with Ultraviolet Surface Excitation) imaging to investigate peripheral nerve morphology, both in 2D and 3D. For 2D imaging, fixed samples are imaged on a conventional MUSE system either label free (via auto-fluorescence) or after staining with fluorescent dyes. This method provides a simple and rapid technique to visualize myelinated nerve fibers at specific locations along the length of the nerve and perform measurements of fiber morphology (e.g., axon diameter and g-ratio). For 3D imaging, a whole-mount staining and MUSE block-face imaging method is developed that can be used to characterize peripheral nerve micro-anatomy and improve the accuracy of computational models in neuromodulation. Images of rat sciatic and human cadaver tibial nerves are presented, illustrating the applicability of the method in different preclinical models.

Inspired by natural living systems, modern cameras can attain three-dimensional vision via multi-view geometry like compound eyes in flies, or time-of-flight sensing like echolocation in bats. However, high-speed, accurate three-dimensional sensing capable of scaling over an extensive distance range and coping well with severe occlusions remains challenging. Here, we report compact light field photography for acquiring large-scale light fields with simple optics and a small number of sensors in arbitrary formats ranging from two-dimensional area to single-point detectors, culminating in a dense multi-view measurement with orders of magnitude lower dataload. We demonstrated compact light field photography for efficient multi-view acquisition of time-of-flight signals to enable snapshot three-dimensional imaging with an extended depth range and through severe scene occlusions. Moreover, we show how compact light field photography can exploit curved and disconnected surfaces for real-time non-line-of-sight 3D vision. Compact light field photography will broadly benefit high-speed 3D imaging and open up new avenues in various disciplines.

The Army is procuring the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) system to enable enhanced night vision, planning, and training capability. One known limitation of the IVAS system is the limited ability to portray virtual entities at far ranges in the outdoors due to light wash out, accurate positioning, and dynamic occlusion. The primary goal of this research was to evaluate fixed three-dimensional (3D) visualizations to support outdoor training for fire teams through squads, requiring target visualizations for 3D non-player characters or vehicles at ranges up to 300 m. Tools employed to achieve outdoor visualizations included GPS locational data with virtual entity placement, and sensors to adjust device light levels. This study was conducted with 20 military test subjects in three scenarios at the Naval Postgraduate School using a HoloLens II. Outdoor location considerations included shadows, background clutter, cars blocking the field of view, and the sun’s positioning. Users provided feedback on identifying the type of object, and the difficulty in finding the object. The results indicate GPS only aided in identification for objects up to 100 m. Animation had a statistically insignificant effect on identification of objects. Employment of software to adjust the light levels of the virtual objects aided in identification of objects at 200 m. This research develops a clearer understanding of requirements to enable the employment of mixed reality in outdoor training. Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army Approved for public release. Characterizing the microvasculature of the human brain is critical to advance understanding of brain vascular function. Most methods rely on tissue staining and microscopy in two-dimensions, which pose several challenges to visualize the three-dimensional structure of microvessels. In this study, we used an edge-based segmentation method to extract the 3D vasculature from synchrotron radiation phase-contrast microtomography (PC-μCT) of two unstained, paraffin-embedded midbrain region of the human brain stem. Vascular structures identified in PC-μCT were validated with histology of the same specimen. Using the Deriche-Canny edge detector that was sensitive to the boundary between tissue and vascular space, we could segment the vessels independent of signal variations in PC-μCT images. From the segmented volumetric vasculature, we calculated vessel diameter, vessel length and volume fraction of the vasculature in the superior colliculi. From high resolution images, we found the most frequent vessel diameter to be between 8.6–10.2 µm. Our findings are consistent with the known anatomy showing two types of vessels with distinctive morphology: peripheral collicular vessels and central collicular vessels. The proposed method opens up new possibilities for vascular research of the central nervous system using synchrotron radiation PC-μCT of unstained human tissue.

Metallic coil embolization is a common method for the endovascular treatment of visceral artery aneurysms (VAA) and visceral artery pseudoaneurysms (VAPA); however, this treatment is suboptimal due to the high cost of coils, incomplete volume occlusion, poor reendothelialization, aneurysm puncture, and coil migration. Several alternative treatment strategies are available, including stent flow diverters, glue embolics, gelfoam slurries, and vascular mesh plugs-each of which have their own disadvantages. Here, we investigated the in vitro capability of a shear-thinning biomaterial (STB), a nanocomposite hydrogel composed of gelatin and silicate nanoplatelets, for the minimally-invasive occlusion of simple necked aneurysm models. We demonstrated the injectability of STB through various clinical catheters, engineered an in vitro testing apparatus to independently manipulate aneurysm neck diameter, fluid flow rate, and flow waveform, and tested the stability of STB within the models under various conditions. Our experiments show that STB is able to withstand at least 1.89Pa of wall shear stress, as estimated by computational fluid dynamics. STB is also able to withstand up to 10mLs-1 pulsatile flow with a waveform mimicking blood flow in the human femoral artery and tolerate greater pressure changes than those in the human aorta. We ultimately found that our in vitro system was limited by supraphysiologic pressure changes caused by aneurysm models with low compliance.

Electronic patches, based on various mechanisms, allow continuous and noninvasive monitoring of biomolecules on the skin surface. However, to date, such devices are unable to sense biomolecules in deep tissues, which have a stronger and faster correlation with the human physiological status than those on the skin surface. Here, we demonstrate a photoacoustic patch for three-dimensional (3D) mapping of hemoglobin in deep tissues. This photoacoustic patch integrates an array of ultrasonic transducers and vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) diodes on a common soft substrate. The high-power VCSEL diodes can generate laser pulses that penetrate >2 cm into biological tissues and activate hemoglobin molecules to generate acoustic waves, which can be collected by the transducers for 3D imaging of the hemoglobin with a high spatial resolution. Additionally, the photoacoustic signal amplitude and temperature have a linear relationship, which allows 3D mapping of core temperatures with high accuracy and fast response. With access to biomolecules in deep tissues, this technology adds unprecedented capabilities to wearable electronics and thus holds significant implications for various applications in both basic research and clinical practice.

It was the aim of the study to assess if computerized simulation and the use of thermoformed cage splints are useful to plan cases of complex craniofacial trauma.patients with fractures in any of the thirds of the craniofacial skeleton and occlusion impairment. Virtual surgical planning with digital reduction of fractures, navigated planning, thermoformed cage splints were used in all cases. Surgical outcomes were evaluated by computing the surface deviation and occlusograms between planned and postoperative models.13 patients were enrolled in this study. Accuracy of bone repositioning was evaluated compared with the surgical planning. For the mandible, mean Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) was of 1.67 with a standard deviation (SD) of ±0.75 mm (p 0.001); for the maxilla, average RMSE was of 0.88 with SD of ±0.52 mm (p 0.001); and for midfacial and upper third bone segments, average RMSE was of 0.59 with SD of ±0.47 mm (p 0.001) CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of the study it seems that thermoformed cage splints might be a promising alternative to other well-established approaches for accurate occlusal restoration and can be fully integrated within the digital workflow.

Robotic-assisted kidney transplantation (RAKT) has shown solid results as a minimally invasive alternative to the standard open approach (open kidney transplantation [OKT]). However, RAKT is still limited in those cases where the recipient's iliac vessels present atherosclerotic plaques, frequently found in elder patients and in those subjected to long-term hemodialysis. Unlike OKT, where the surgeon can palpate the arterial plaques, in minimally invasive surgery the haptic feedback is missing, making the vascular clamping and arteriotomy unsafe.To employ three-dimensional (3D) imaging reconstruction using augmented reality (AR) to intraoperatively locate the plaques during the crucial steps of kidney transplantation.Our study was conducted according to the Idea, Development, Exploration, Assessment, and Long-term follow-up (IDEAL) model for surgical innovation. Three-dimensional virtual models were obtained from high-accuracy computed tomography scan imaging and superimposed on the vessels during RAKT using the Da Vinci console software.Three-dimensional AR-guided robotic-assisted kidney transplantation.The correspondence of virtual models with the real anatomy of patients was assessed comparing vessels' and plaques' measures.We tested the possibility of using the AR in the setting of vascular surgery by checking the correspondence of the virtual models to the real vessels. During the accuracy assessment, we investigated the anatomy of the iliac plaques and the capacity of the virtual models to correctly represent them. Finally, we tested the efficacy of the virtual model superimposition on the real vessels with plaques during RAKT in the recipients of living donor grafts. The main limitation consists in training needed to correctly superimpose virtual models on the real field.The employment of 3D AR allowed surgeons to overcome one of the main limitations of RAKT, setting the foundation to expand its indications to patients with advanced atheromatic vascular disease.The use of three-dimensional augmented reality guidance during kidney transplantation (KT) has the potential to "navigate" the surgeon during KT, allowing a safer procedure in patients with atheromatic vascular disease.

BackgroundTissue clearing technologies have enabled remarkable advancements for in situ characterization of tissues and exploration of the three-dimensional (3D) relationships between cells, however, these studies have predominantly been performed in non-human tissues and correlative assessment with clinical imaging has yet to be explored. We sought to evaluate the feasibility of tissue clearing technologies for3Dimaging of intact human prostate and the mapping of structurally and molecularly preserved pathology data with multi-parametric volumetric MR imaging (mpMRI).MethodsWhole-mount prostates were processed with either hydrogel-based CLARITY or solvent-based iDISCO. The samples were stained with a nuclear dye or fluorescently labeled with antibodies against androgen receptor, alpha-methylacyl coenzyme-A racemase, or p63, and then imaged with 3D confocal microscopy. The apparent diffusion coefficientand Ktrans maps were computed from preoperative mpMRI.ResultsQuantitative analysis of cleared normal and tumor prostate tissue volumes displayed differences in 3D tissue architecture, marker-specific cell staining, and cell densities that were significantly correlated with mpMRI measurements in this initial, pilot cohort.Conclusions3D imaging of human prostate volumes following tissue clearing is a feasible technique for quantitative radiology-pathology correlation analysis with mpMRI and provides an opportunity to explore functional relationships between cellular structures and cross-sectional clinical imaging.

A computational analysis has been performed in this study to solve three-dimensional thermo-solutal natural convection in a differentially heated cubical enclosure filled with micropolar CNT/water nanofluid stabilized by two types of surfactants lignin and sodium polycarboxylate. The work is carried out for different pertinent parameters as Rayleigh number (104 $$\le$$ Ra $$\le$$ 106), micropolar parameter (0 $$\le$$ K $$\le$$ 10), buoyancy ratio (−1 $$\le$$ N $$\le$$ 0) and nanoparticles’s volume fraction (0.0055% $$\le \varphi \le$$ 0.557%). It is observed that the heat and mass transfer rates are lower for a micropolar nanofluid model when compared to the pure nanofluid model. In fact, the enhancement of micropolar parameter results a decrease in average Nusselt and Sherwood numbers. The use of lignin as a surfactant ameliorates heat and mass transfer rate and nanofluid flow better than the use of sodium polycarboxylate as a surfactant. The nanoparticles volume fraction can be used as a control element for heat rate and fluid flow. Thus, for a nanoparticles volume concentration less than the critical value, the flow intensity is ameliorated and is deteriorated when it exceeds this value.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has become the biomaterial of choice for repairing craniofacial defects over time. Prospects for the point-of-care (POC) fabrication of PEEK customized implants have surfaced thanks to the developments in three-dimensional (3D) printing systems. Consequently, it has become essential to investigate the characteristics of these in-house fabricated implants so that they meet the necessary standards and eventually provide the intended clinical benefits. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the steam sterilization method on the dimensional accuracy of POC 3D-printed PEEK customized cranial implants. The objective was to assess the influence of standard sterilization procedures on material extrusion-based 3D-printed PEEK customized implants with non-destructive material testing. Fifteen PEEK customized cranial implants were fabricated using an in-house material extrusion-based 3D printer. After fabrication, the cranial implants were digitalized with a professional-grade optical scanner before and after sterilization. The dimensional changes for the 3D-printed PEEK cranial implants were analyzed using medically certified 3D image-based engineering software. The material extrusion 3D-printed PEEK customized cranial implants displayed no statistically significant dimensional difference with steam sterilization (p > 0.05). Evaluation of the cranial implants’ accuracy revealed that the dimensions were within the clinically acceptable accuracy level with deviations under 1.00 mm. Steam sterilization does not significantly alter the dimensional accuracy of the in-house 3D-printed PEEK customized cranial implants.

The aim of this study was to compare the positional information transfer accuracy of palatal temporary anchorage devices (TADs) of two different brands of transfer caps: PSM and Leone. Thirty plaster casts of maxillary dental arches were chosen for master models. A couple of Leone TADs were inserted in each master model. For each master model, two analysis models were created: using two transfer caps, Leone and PSM, the impressions were taken, the analogues were connected on the transfer caps, and the casts were poured. Using digital methods and equipment, such as a 3D scanner, a 3D analysis and a comparison of the accuracy of the two transfer caps in transferring the positional information of the TADs was then made. The data obtained were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U-test at a significance level of α = 0.05. PSM transfer caps showed higher error frequency in almost all measurements. Only two measurements had a larger error in the analysis models made with Leone transfer caps. The Mann–Whitney U-test found a significant difference between the error levels of TADs found in the analysis models created with PSM transfer caps. Leone transfer caps showed greater reliability in TADs positional information transmission.

This study applies deep-reinforcement-learning algorithms to integrated guidance and control for three-dimensional, high-maneuverability missile-target interception. Dynamic environment, reward functions concerning multi-factors, agents based on the deep-deterministic-policy-gradient algorithm, and action signals with pitch and yaw fins as control commands were constructed in the research, which control the missile in order to intercept targets. Firstly, the missile-interception system includes dynamics such as the inertia of the missile, the aerodynamic parameters, and fin delays. Secondly, to improve the convergence speed and guidance accuracy, a convergence factor for the angular velocity of the target line of sight and deep dual-filter methods were introduced into the design of the reward function. The method proposed in this paper was then compared with traditional proportional navigation. Next, many simulations were carried out on high-maneuverability targets with different initial conditions by randomization. The numerical-simulation results showed that the proposed guidance strategy has higher guidance accuracy and stronger robustness and generalization capability against the aerodynamic parameters.

Introduction: As has been established, the left ventricle (LV) and the left atrium (LA) form an organic unit of the left heart; however, little is known about the dependence of LV rotational parameters on LA volumes, even in healthy circumstances. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the associations between basal and apical LV rotations and LA volumes and volume-based functional properties throughout the cardiac cycle in healthy adults by three-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography. Methods: The present study comprised 167 healthy adults (age: 33.4 ± 12.6 years, 77 males) with normally directed LV rotational mechanics. All subjects underwent complete two-dimensional Doppler echocardiography with three-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography (3DSTE)-derived data acquisition. The 3DSTE-derived LA volumes and LV rotational parameters were determined at a later date. Results: An increasing end-systolic maximum LA volume (Vmax) was associated with increasing pre-atrial-contraction early (VpreA) and minimum end-diastolic (Vmin) LA volumes, and all stroke volumes were increased as well. Systolic basal left ventricular rotation (LVrot) was highest in the case of the highest systolic Vmax and early-diastolic VpreA. Apical LVrot did not show obvious associations with any increasing LA volumes. The highest systolic basal LVrot was associated with significantly increased diastolic VpreA and Vmin. Reduced diastolic LA volumes (VpreA, Vmin) were seen in the case of increased apical LVrot. An increasing basal LVrot was associated with the tendentious lowering of the apical LVrot and the significant elevation of LV twist. Similarly, an increasing apical LVrot was associated with the tendentious lowering of basal LVrot and the significant elevation of LV twist. Conclusions: Strong associations and adaptations between 3DSTE-derived LA volumes throughout the cardiac cycle and LV rotational mechanics were evidenced, even in healthy circumstances.
