Lotus and Green Tea leaves are two frequently used medicinal plants in Vietnam, utilized as food, drink, or in traditional treatments to help with weight loss and cholesterol reduction. The study’s major goal is to determine the parameters of the process preparation in order to generate instant tea powder that satisfies quality criteria for customer demand. Twenty experiments are conducted using the D-optimal model to evaluate the cause-effect relationship and optimize the production process of instant tea powder. Four independent variables are selected for the survey namely alcohol concentration (40%; 50%; 60%), carrier mass (10 g; 20 g; 30 g), inlet air temperature (160 °C; 170 °C) and flow rate (4 rpm/min; 5 rpm/min). The instant tea powder is effectively created and met quality parameters, with a drying performance, moisture content, total phenol and flavonoid content of 29.15%, 4.83%, 45.29 mg GA/g, and 70.68 mg QE/g, respectively. In conclusion, the optimal parameters of the preparation process were identified, which included an alcohol content of 60%, a carrier mass of 10 g, an inlet air temperature of 165 °C, and a flow rate of 4 rpm/min.

This work illustrates the development of a dry inhalation powder of cyclosporine-A for the prevention of rejection after lung transplantation and for the treatment of COVID-19. The influence of excipients on the spray-dried powder’s critical quality attributes was explored. The best-performing powder in terms of dissolution time and respirability was obtained starting from a concentration of ethanol of 45% (v/v) in the feedstock solution and 20% (w/w) of mannitol. This powder showed a faster dissolution profile (Weibull dissolution time of 59.5 min) than the poorly soluble raw material (169.0 min). The powder exhibited a fine particle fraction of 66.5% and an MMAD of 2.97 µm. The inhalable powder, when tested on A549 and THP-1, did not show cytotoxic effects up to a concentration of 10 µg/mL. Furthermore, the CsA inhalation powder showed efficiency in reducing IL-6 when tested on A549/THP-1 co-culture. A reduction in the replication of SARS-CoV-2 on Vero E6 cells was observed when the CsA powder was tested adopting the post-infection or simultaneous treatment. This formulation could represent a therapeutic strategy for the prevention of lung rejection, but is also a viable approach for the inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 replication and the COVID-19 pulmonary inflammatory process.

International audience; Spray drying produces spherical agglomerates to obtain powders with good flowability. Three alumina powders of different size and/or specific surface area were spray-dried without any binder using either two-fluid or ultrasonic nozzle technology. Compared to the two-fluid nozzle, the ultrasonic one shows a better ability to form agglomerates from a coarse powder and increases the size of the agglomerates when spray drying is carried out under the same operating conditions. The redispersion of spray-dried agglomerates in solution was analysed by applying variable ultrasound durations during size measurement by wet laser diffraction. The initial state of the powder plays a predominant role in relation to the spray drying operating conditions both in terms of size characteristics and redispersion properties. Regardless of the alumina powders and spray drying conditions, a similar trend in deagglomeration behaviour was observed with first-order kinetics and a characteristic kinetic time depending on the initial powder properties.

Volatile substances are in high demand, especially in cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications. To prolong their shelf-life and prevent their degradation if exposed to air, these volatile substances are often encapsulated. Most frequently, matrix materials are composed of high-molecular-weight polymers because some of them can efficiently retain volatiles and meet the safety requirements these applications impose. However, these substances must be processed at high concentrations, resulting in viscous solutions that are difficult to spray or emulsify. To address this shortcoming, we employed a low-molecular-weight substance, succinic acid, as a matrix material to encapsulate a model volatile, vanillin. To facilitate the encapsulation of low-molecular-weight substances, such as volatiles, we produce these particles through surface acoustic wave (SAW)-based microfluidic spray-drying. This technique forms drops with diameters as small as 1-10 mu m that dry within a few hundred ms. Thereby, we can kinetically arrest or even suppress phase separations. We demonstrate that vanillin is most efficiently encapsulated and retained over a prolonged time if succinic acid is formulated from solutions initially containing succinic acid concentrations exceeding 10% of its saturation concentration. If appropriately formulated, these succinic acid based particles retain volatiles longer than the much more commonly employed high-molecular-weight dextrin. These results open up a new avenue to encapsulate volatiles in low-molecular-weight compounds that pack more densely than high-molecular-weight counterparts and therefore can retain volatiles for a prolonged time.

Background: Wine antioxidants are linked to cardiovascular disease prevention, thus are highly valued by the healthy food market. The dehydration process removes alcohol and water from wine and allows it to extend its shelf life, while encapsulation can help preserve physical-chemical and antioxidant properties. Moreover, information on the effect of wine drying and encapsulation on non-anthocyanin phenolic compounds is limited in the literature. Methods: Listan Prieto and Syrah (Vitis vinifera L.) wines were dehydrated and converted into powder by freezing and spray drying. Powdered wines were subjected to water activity, pH, soluble solids, color, and phenolic compounds analysis. Results: Freeze-drying process produced powdered wines with higher pH than the spray-drying process. Powdered wines made by these processes presented similar water activity and soluble solids. Powdered wines did not show statistical differences in trans-resveratrol, hydrocinnamic acids, phloretin, kaempferol, and quercetin content according to their dehydration process. In addition, powdered wines significantly concentrated hydrocinnamic acid and quercetin when compared to non-dealcoholized and dealcoholized wine samples. Conclusions: The results suggest that the dehydration process does not negatively modify the characteristics of the wine, and it retains a significant concentration of phenolic compounds. Therefore, powdered wines have an interesting potential to be used as a natural source of antioxidants for food supplementation.

Regular consumption of hen eggs can help to prevent deficiencies of essential nutrients, such as essential amino acids, vitamin A and E or trace elements zinc and selenium, for vulnerable populations. This study focused on assessing the nutritional value of spray-dried eggs, favored by their manufacturability, storability and ease of addition to (complementary) foods. Using a wide range of analytical techniques, we recorded and compared the nutrient profiles of commercially produced pasteurized whole eggs and their respective powder samples spray-dried at 160°C. Important nutrients that were not significantly affected by spray-drying include total fat content, several amino acids, α- and δ-tocopherol, lutein, zeaxanthin, essential trace elements and cobalamin. The most notable mean losses were found for unsaturated fatty acids, e.g., linoleic (by −38.7%, from 4.11 ± 0.45 to 2.52 ± 0.75 g/100 g DM) and linolenic acid (by −60.8%, from 0.76 ± 0.05 to 0.30 ± 0.04 g/100 g DM). Despite recording significant retinol losses in two out of three batches, the overall low reduction of −14% recommend spray-dried eggs as a valuable source of vitamin A. A daily intake of spray-dried egg powder corresponding to one medium sized egg meets dietary reference values for children, e.g., by 100% for vitamin E, by 24% for retinol, by 61% for selenium and by 22% for zinc. In conclusion, even though a dry weight comparison favors supplementation with pasteurized whole eggs, our results demonstrate a high potential for spray-dried eggs as nutritional supplement. However, the spray-drying process should be optimized toward higher retentions of unsaturated fatty acids and retinol.

Microencapsulation of extra virgin olive oil has been taken into consideration. Initially, emulsions were prepared using extra virgin olive oil and aqueous solutions of different proportions of maltodextrin (MD) having dextrose equivalent (DE) 19 and whey protein isolates (WPI), such as 100% MD, 100% WPI, 25% MD + 75% WPI, 50% MD + 50% WPI and 75% MD + 25% WPI. Subsequently, emulsions were used for dehydration by either spray-drying (SD) or freeze-drying (FD) to produce olive oil microcapsules. Emulsion stability, viscosity and droplet size influenced the characteristics of the microcapsules. The highest encapsulation efficiency was achieved using 50% MD + 50% WPI in the emulsions with subsequent SD. The moisture content of the microcapsules increased with increasing proportions of MD. The size of the microcapsules increased with increasing proportions of WPI. The bulk density and tapped density were reduced with higher proportions of MD in the microcapsules. Furthermore, microcapsules with a higher proportion of MD exhibited poor flowability and high cohesiveness. Microcapsules from the higher proportion MD emulsions, followed by SD were spherical with a smooth surface; however, microcapsules with dent structures were produced from 100% WPI in the emulsions with subsequent SD. Microcapsules, produced from emulsions with a higher proportion of WPI, followed by FD were flat flakes and had irregular surfaces.

Phage therapy is recognized to be a promising alternative to fight antibiotic-resistant infections. In the quest for oral dosage forms containing bacteriophages, the utilization of colonic-release Eudragit® derivatives has shown potential in shielding bacteriophages from the challenges encountered within the gastrointestinal tract, such as fluctuating pH levels and the presence of digestive enzymes. Consequently, this study aimed to develop targeted oral delivery systems for bacteriophages, specifically focusing on colon delivery and employing Eudragit® FS30D as the excipient. The bacteriophage model used was LUZ19. An optimized formulation was established to not only preserve the activity of LUZ19 during the manufacturing process but also ensure its protection from highly acidic conditions. Flowability assessments were conducted for both capsule filling and tableting processes. Furthermore, the viability of the bacteriophages remained unaffected by the tableting process. Additionally, the release of LUZ19 from the developed system was evaluated using the Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME®) model. Finally, stability studies demonstrated that the powder remained stable for at least 6 months when stored at +5 °C.

Two plant-based emulsifiers, soybean lecithin and pea protein isolate, were studied for their emulsifying and encapsulating capacities of an antimicrobial molecule, trans-cinnamaldehyde (TC), at two different pH values, three and seven, and after drying with two different techniques, spray-drying and freeze-drying. To characterize the obtained capsules, various physicochemical tests were conducted to examine particle size, encapsulation efficiency, thermal and moisture stability, and powder morphology. The spray-dried (SD) and freeze-dried (FD) powders had an average particle size of 8.35 µm and 144.49 µm, respectively. The SD powders showed similar encapsulation efficiency (EE) for soybean lecithin and pea protein isolate with an average value of 95.69%. On the other hand, the FD powders had lower EE compared to SD powders, with an average of 58.01% for lecithin-containing powders and 83.93% for pea-protein-containing powders. However, the water content of FD powders (2.83%) was lower than that of SD powders (4.72%). The powders prepared at pH 3 showed better thermal stability. Morphological analysis showed spherical particles for SD powders and irregular shapes for FD powders. Nanoemulsions as well as dried powders showed interesting antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli and Listeria innocua, confirming their potential use as natural preservatives in foods.

The encapsulation of the 3-deoxyanthocyanidins (3-DXA) red dye, extracted from sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) leaves, was explored for food application. The extracts showed antioxidant activity at concentrations ranging from 803 to 1210 μg mL−1 and did not reveal anti-inflammatory or cytotoxic properties, indicating their potential for food application. Encapsulation was performed with two carrier agents (maltodextrin and Arabic gum) in different proportions (1:1, 2:1 and 1.5:2.5 (w/w)). The microparticles produced by freeze-drying and spray-drying were studied according to the concentration of the dye, the encapsulation efficiency, the process yield, the solubility and the colour of the powders. The dye extracts are released from the microparticles at different pHs. The variation in ratio composition of the 3-DXA encapsulation was assessed by principal component analysis (PCA) using data from ten physicochemical parameters. The results indicated that the maltodextrin at the 2:1 ratio had a higher dye concentration and total phenolic content (TPC) at pH 6. This ratio was selected to produce the microparticles by freeze-drying and spray-drying, and the particles were used in the temperature stability tests at pH 6. The results suggest that the freeze-drying process offers better protection to 3-DXA, with a degradation percentage of 22% during the heating period (80 °C for 18 h), compared to the non-encapsulated dye (48%). However, there were no significant differences between the two polymeric agents. The non-encapsulated 3-DXA was evaluated as control and lost 48% of the total colour with the same treatment. Red dyes from sorghum leaf by-products may constitute promising ingredients for the food industry and increase the value of this crop.

Spray-drying is one of the most popular techniques in the food industry for converting liquid material from a fluid state into a form of dried particles to produce encapsulated or instant products. Instant products are considered as convenient foods; moreover, the goal of encapsulation is to close the bioactive compounds in a shell, preventing them from being affected by environmental factors. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of spray-drying conditions, in particular three inlet temperatures, on the physicochemical and antioxidant properties of powders obtained from Camelina Press Cake Extract (CPE). The CPE was spray-dried at 140 °C, 160 °C and 180 °C. The solubility, Carr and Hausner Indexes, tapped densities and water activity of the powders were analyzed. The structural changes were also detected using FTIR spectroscopy. Additionally, the characteristics of the initial and reconstituted samples and their rheological properties were evaluated. The antioxidant potential, total polyphenols and flavonoids content, free amino acids, and the Maillard reaction products contents in the spray-dried powders were also evaluated. The results indicate a cascade of changes between the initial and reconstituted samples, and important changes in the bioactive potential of samples. The inlet temperature significantly influenced the solubility, flowability and particle sizes of the powders, as well as Maillard products formation. The results of the rheological measurements illustrate the changes after the reconstitution of extracts. This study indicates the optimal parameters of CPE spray-drying, those that yield favorable physicochemical and functional values, which may open up a promising path for CPE valorization, indicating its potential and the possibilities of its use.

Spray-drying is a widely used industrial technique and has shown an immense potential in the fields of nanoscience and technology. This is due to its ability to synthesize microgranules consisting of correlated nanostructures using evaporation induced assembly through bottom-up approach. Although the nature of correlation among the constituent nanoparticles and their size distribution could earlier be obtained by conventional Small-angle Scattering (SAS) technique, a statistically averaged quantitative measure of the shell thickness and hollowness of the formed granules remained a challenge. In this work, we have used Spin-echo Small-angle Neutron Scattering (SESANS) technique to characterize spray-dried nanostructured microgranules having different hollowness. It is shown that this non-destructive technique provided precise quantification of the granular sizes and hollowness by utilizing polarization property of neutrons in real space directly.

Much attention has been paid to the health benefits of including fruits and vegetables in the diet. However, for the compounds responsible for this beneficial effect to be effective at the level of the human organism, they must be available for absorption after digestion. In this sense, in vivo studies are needed to demonstrate the bioavailability of these compounds and their physiological activity. In order to provide information in this regard, this study collects data on the levels of vitamin C (VC) and naringenin (NAG) in the blood serum of the 11 volunteer participants in this trial, before and after consuming two different grapefruit juices. The juices were prepared by rehydrating the grapefruit powder obtained by freeze-drying (FD) the fruit puree or by spray-drying (SD) the liquefied grapefruit. No significant differences (p > 0.05) neither by juice nor by participant were observed in any case. The mean relative increase of VC, NAG and the radical scavenging ability (RSA) in blood serum due to grapefruit juices intake was 12%, 28% and 26%, respectively. Just VC showed a positive and significant Pearson’s correlation with RSA. The mean bioavailability of VC was quantified as 1.529 ± 0.002 mg VC/L serum per 100 mg of VC ingested.

The current study presents the most suitable method for encapsulating nutmeg essential oil with liquorice and red clover. Two widely used methods, spray-drying and freeze-drying, were employed to find the most suitable for essential oil volatile compounds’ protection. Results showed that freeze-dried capsules (LM) had a higher yield (85.34%) compared to the exact formulation of spray-dried microcapsules (SDM)—45.12%. All the antioxidant and total phenolic compounds’ results obtained with the LM sample were significantly higher compared with SDM. LM microcapsules were incorporated in two different bases with no additional sugar (gelatin and pectin) for targeted release. Pectin tablets had firmer and harder texture properties, while gelatin tablets had a more elastic texture. There was a significant impact on texture changes caused by microcapsules. Microencapsulated essential oil with extracts can be used alone or in a gel base (pectin or gelatin, depending on user preferences). It could be an effective product to protect the active volatile compounds and regulate the release of active compounds and give a pleasant taste.

O processo de secagem por atomização ou spray-drying é uma das operações mais frequentes para a obtenção de extratos secos a partir de plantas medicinais. No entanto, durante o processo de preparação desses insumos farmacêuticos ativos (IFA) de origem vegetal, uma série de fatores podem afetar a qualidade desses produtos intermediários. Por meio de levantamento bibliográfico científico e da legislação brasileira sobre medicamentos fitoterápicos, vivências do grupo em pesquisa e desenvolvimento (P&D) da Fiocruz e da realização de Brainstorming entre os integrantes da equipe, foi elaborado um diagrama de causa e efeito (Diagrama de Ishikawa). Tal pesquisa teve o objetivo de levantar pontos críticos no processo de produção desses IFA de origem vegetal, apontando aspectos do processo de spray-drying de ordem teórica e prática que poderiam afetar a qualidade do produto fitoterápico. Com base nas informações mencionadas no diagrama e na discussão desses pontos acerca de cada etapa até a preparação do extrato seco, foi possível racionalizar o processo de obtenção desse intermediário, com foco em transformá-lo em produto fitoterápico.

Tadalafil (TDL) is a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor (PDE5I), indicated for erectile dysfunction (ED). However, TDL exhibits poor aqueous solubility and dissolution rate, which may limit its application. This study aims to prepare amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) by spray-drying, using glycyrrhizin-a natural drug carrier. Particle and physicochemical characterizations were performed by particle size, polydispersity index measurement, yield, drug content estimation, Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and dissolution study. In order to evaluate the aphrodisiac activity of the prepared ASD, sexual behavior study was performed in male rats. It is further considered for the stability study. Our results revealed that TDL-GLZ spray-dried dispersion was a successful drug-carrier binary mixture. XRD and SEM showed that ASD of TDL with GLZ presented in the amorphous state and dented-spherical shape, unlike the drug indicating crystalline and spiked shaped. The optimized ASD3 formulation with particle size (1.92 µm), PDI (0.32), yield (97.78%) and drug content (85.00%) showed 4.07 folds’ increase in dissolution rate compared to pure TDL. The results obtained from the in vivo study exhibit significantly improved aphrodisiac activity with ASD3. The stability study revealed that the prepared ASD3 did not show any remarkable changes in the dissolution and drug content for 1 month storage at room temperature.

The present study was aimed to develop the powder from Moldavian balm extract using a spray dryer to preserve the valuable phytochemicals such as hydroxycinnamic acid and flavonoids. In order to produce optimum Moldavian balm spray‐dried powder, response surface methodology was applied. The inlet air temperature (120–180°C), compressed airflow rate (5–10 L/min), and carriers’ concentration (10%–30%) were kept as independent variables, while moisture content, drying performance, porosity, total phenol content, total flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity were selected as responses. The process was optimized with inlet air temperature of 140.36°C, compressed airflow rate of 9.13 L/min and carriers’ concentration of 18%, resulting in powder with moisture content of 7.68%, drying performance of 62.52%, porosity of 76.4%, total phenol content of 6.295 mg GAE/g, total flavonoid content of 0.378 mg QUE/g, and antioxidant activity of 51.78%. The optimized process led to attain the powder having significantly better phytochemical properties compared with others., A powder from Moldavian balm plant extract successfully obtained using spray‐drying. Air temperature, airflow, and carriers were experimental independent variables. Optimum conditions of variables were 140.36°C, 9.13 L/min, and 18%, respectively. Spray‐dried optimized powder retained significant amount of phytochemical compounds.

To increase their stability, therapeutic (or monoclonal) antibodies (mAbs) are often formulated as solids by using a variety of drying techniques, e.g. freeze-drying, spray-drying, or spray freeze-drying. The addition of excipients is required to preserve stability of the protein during the drying process and subsequent storage of the resulting solid form. The addition of low molecular weight excipients, such as amino acids, to sugar based spray- and freeze-dried formulations has been suggested to improve the storage stability of proteins in the dried state. In this study sugars (sucrose, trehalose), amino acids (Gly, Ala, Pro, Ser, Val, Leu, Ile, Gln, His, Lys, Arg, Phe, Trp) and combinations thereof were investigated for their stabilizing effect during spray-drying and subsequent storage and for their reconstitution time reducing effect. Two IgG4 mAbs were used as model antibodies. From an initial screening study, basic and small neutral amino acids, in combination with a sugar, such as sucrose or trehalose, showed reconstitution time reducing and stabilizing properties. Arg in particular displayed excellent reconstitution and stability enhancing properties. Moreover, Arg was the only amino acid providing stabilizing properties comparable to sucrose or trehalose. Previous work by the authors described a statistically substantiated comparison between the three basic amino acids in a sugar containing formulation, albeit limited to a single concentration level [5]. Therefore, a follow-up design of experiments (DoE) study was performed to determine the optimum trehalose/amino acid content required for an optimal protein stability and reconstitution time and to compare the effects of two basic amino acids, Lys and Arg, to those of two neutral amino acids, Gly and Pro. The conducted DoE covered a wide range of trehalose (30-120 mM) and amino acid (50-150 mM) concentrations. The concentration of trehalose was found to be the main contributor to a reduction in reconstitution time and an increase in stability. Here we show that the addition of amino acids such as Gly, Pro, and Lys does not improve stability nor does it reduce the reconstitution time. Of the tested amino acids, only Arg showed a marked reduction in reconstitution time and improvement in stability compared to a trehalose. Moreover, the properties displayed by Arg could justify its application as the main stabilizer in spray-dried mAb formulations, eliminating the need for a sugar matrix altogether. But the weight ratio of stabilizer to protein was found the factor exerting the strongest overall influence on the formulation's reconstitution time and stability. Consumer knowledge about pasta quality differs around the world. Modern consumers are more sophisticated compared to past times, due to the availability of information on pasta types and quality. Therefore, this study investigated the nutritional, physical, textural, and morphological quality of durum wheat pasta enriched with carrot waste encapsulates (10 and 20% freeze-dried encapsulate (FDE) and 10 and 20% spray-dried encapsulate (SDE)), as well as determining consumer preferences for this type of product. Replacement of semolina with FDE and SDE contributed to changes in the pasta nutritional quality, which was reflected in the increased protein, fat, and ash content. Additionally, changes in cooking quality, color, and texture were within satisfactory limits. The uncooked pasta enriched with 10 and 20% SDE was characterized by a lighter yellow intensity with color saturation, as well as an imperceptible waxy appearance compared to the control and enriched pasta with 10 and 20% FDE. After cooking, the yellow color was more intense in all the enriched pasta samples which can be linked to the raw cereal which was significantly greater in the control in comparison to the FDE and SDE containing samples. Overall, carrot waste can be a promising material for the food industry to produce high-quality pasta.

Gene therapy offers hope of cure for rare and other serious diseases that currently have no established effective treatments. It has become a valuable therapeutic strategy for congenital or acquired genetic lung diseases, such as alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency, infections and some types of lung cancer, among others. In this Thesis work, a new pulmonary delivery platform consisting of mannitol microspheres (Ma MS) containing chitosan-based nanocapsules (CS-based NCs) loaded with the model plasmid pCMV-betaGal is proposed for its direct delivery to the lung. The designed micro-nanostructures have suitable aerodynamic properties, are biocompatible with the A549 lung cell line and are distributed in the deep lung, producing transfection. 2023-03-30

The study reports the production of an innovative functional orange powder supplemented with probiotics and prebiotics, by implementing new ecofriendly and sustainable technologies, such as spray drying. The survival of Lactobacillus casei shirota, Lactobacillus casei immunitas and Lactobacillus acidophilus johnsonii, during spray drying in orange juice was proven and the stability of the powder obtained at room temperature and at 4 °C was investigated. Furthermore, the study highlighted the possibility to enhance the pectin obtained from the food agroindustry as a carrier for the spray-drying process. Combining maltodextrins and pectins at a 10:1 weight ratio. The study showed the efficiency of the maltodextrin/pectin mixture as carriers for the spray-drying process and the viability of the tested microorganisms during both the storage at room temperature and at 4 °C, showing that the latter represents the best storing condition for a longer viability of the microorganisms.

Background: Buccal delivery of drugs can be used as an alternative administration route to conventional oral route avoiding the liver first-pass effect and improving patient compliance. Objective: The goal of this work was to develop dry emulsions for buccal delivery of ketoprofen, used as a lipophilic model drug. The influence of two vegetable oils, olive oil or wheat germ oil, in the presence of α-cyclodextrin and different drying techniques on the dry emulsion properties was evaluated. Methods: Emulsions were prepared by adding olive oil or wheat germ oil to an aqueous solution of α-cyclodextrin and subsequently dried through an oven, freeze-dryer or spray-dryer. Dry emulsions were characterized in terms of yield, encapsulation efficiency, morphology and drug solid-state. In vitro drug release and permeation studies were carried out to evaluate dry emulsion ability to release the drug and to allow its permeation through the esophageal porcine epithelium. Results: The formation of stable and milky emulsion was assured by cyclodextrin ability to interact with oil components obtaining an inclusion complex with amphiphilic property able to act as a surfaceactive agent. The drying process influenced the yield and the encapsulation efficiency, while no significant differences were observed between olive oil and wheat germ oil. Freeze-dried emulsions, selected as the best formulations, resulted in fast release of drug thereby ensuring its permeation across the epithelium. Conclusion: Dry emulsions prepared with a simple and easy method, using natural ingredients and avoiding synthetic surfactants and organic solvents, could be used for buccal delivery of lipophilic drugs.

The objective of the present work was to determine the effects of the main variables of spray drying to obtain orange juice powder as an alternative method for the integral use of orange juice. The variables evaluated for the spray-drying were the air inlet temperature, feed flow, and maltodextrin concentration, which had a different degree of significance on the assessed responses, the air inlet temperature is the one that had a more significant degree on the moisture content (p ≤ 0.01) and polyphenol content (p ≤ 0.05). While the maltodextrin concentration was for the yield and moisture content (p ≤ 0.05). However, on the color attributes, no significant effects were observed under the evaluated variables. Therefore, using spray-drying an orange juice powder with stable physicochemical characteristics was obtained, using maltodextrin 7% (w/w) and 0.1% (w/v) sodium alginate as carrier agents, 160°C inlet air temperature, 14 mL/min feed flow, which will allow the use of this drying technology.

The study assessed the effect of carrier agents maltodextrin and gum Arabic on the storage stability of spray dried Nigella sativa powder packed in low-density polyethylene bags and stored at maximum 4°C for up to 12 months. At 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months intervals the samples were assessed for changes in caffeine content, moisture content, water activity, colour, solubility capacity, bulk density, and antioxidants activity as total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC). After 12 months storage, a 61-68% loss in TPC and TFC was observed and anti-oxidant activity had reduced by 70%-72%. Overall, water activity and moisture content increased with a decrease in total antioxidant activity, accompanied by a significant decrease in caffeine content. In this work, the capacity of the mucilage extracted from the cladodes of Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI) and aloe vera (AV) leaves as wall material in the microencapsulation of pink guava carotenoids using spray-drying was studied. The stability of the encapsulated carotenoids was quantified using UV–vis and HPLC/MS techniques. Likewise, the antioxidant activity (TEAC), color (CIELab), structural (FTIR) and microstructural (SEM and particle size) properties, as well as the total dietary content, of both types of mucilage microcapsules were determined. Our results show that the use of AV mucilage, compared to OFI mucilage, increased both the retention of β-carotene and the antioxidant capacity of the carotenoid microcapsules by around 14%, as well as the total carotenoid content (TCC) by around 26%, and also favors the formation of spherical-type particles (Ø ≅ 26 µm) without the apparent damage of a more uniform size and with an attractive red-yellow hue. This type of microcapsules is proposed as a convenient alternative means to incorporate guava carotenoids, a natural colorant with a high antioxidant capacity, and dietary fiber content in the manufacture of functional products, which is a topic of interest for the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.

Mimosa tenuiflora aqueous extract (MAE) is rich in phenolic compounds. Among them, condensed tannins have been demonstrated to exhibit a strong antioxidant and antiaflatoxin B1 activities in Aspergillus flavus. Since antioxidant capacity can change with time due to environmental interactions, this study aimed to evaluate the ability of encapsulation by spray-drying of Mimosa tenuiflora aqueous extract to preserve their biological activities through storage. A dry formulation may also facilitate transportation and uses. For that, three different wall materials were used and compared for their efficiency. Total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, antifungal and antiaflatoxin activities were measured after the production of the microparticles and after one year of storage at room temperature. These results confirmed that encapsulation by spray-drying using polysaccharide wall materials is able to preserve antiaflatoxin activity of Mimosa tenuiflora extract better than freezing.

Ocular drug delivery is challenging due to the very short drug residence time and low permeability. In this work, we produce and characterize mucoadhesive mixed polymeric micelles (PMs) made of chitosan (CS) and poly(vinyl alcohol) backbones graft-hydrophobized with short poly(methyl methacrylate) blocks and use them to encapsulate cannabidiol (CBD), an anti-inflammatory cannabinoid. CBD-loaded mixed PMs are physically stabilized by ionotropic crosslinking of the CS domains with sodium tripolyphoshate and spray-drying. These mixed PMs display CBD loading capacity of 20% w/w and sizes of 100–200 nm, and spherical morphology (cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy). The good compatibility of the unloaded and CBD-loaded PMs is assessed in a human corneal epithelial cell line. Then, we confirm the permeability of CBD-free PMs and nanoencapsulated CBD in human corneal epithelial cell monolayers under liquid–liquid and air–liquid conditions. Overall, our results highlight the potential of these polymeric nanocarriers for ocular drug delivery.

Essential oils have been studied for various applications, including for therapeutic purposes. There is extensive literature regarding their properties; however, their low stability limits their application. Generally, the microencapsulation of essential oils allows enhanced stability and enables the potential incorporation in solid dosage forms. Lavender and peppermint oils were encapsulated in microparticles using a spray-drying technique under optimized conditions: 170 °C temperature, 35 m3/h aspiration volume flow, and 7.5 mL/min feed flow. Arabic gum and maltodextrin were used as coating polymers individually in varying concentrations from 5 to 20% (w/v) and in combination. The microparticles were studied for morphology, particle size, oil content, and flowability. The formulated powder particles showed a high yield of 71 to 84%, mean diameter 2.41 to 5.99 µm, and total oil content of up to 10.80%. The results showed that both the wall material type and concentration, as well as the type of essential oil, significantly affected the encapsulation process and the final particle characteristics. Our study has demonstrated that the encapsulation of lavender and peppermint oils in Arabic gum/maltodextrin microparticles by spray-drying represents a feasible approach for the conversion of liquids into solids regarding their further use in powder technology.

International audience; The present work deals with a study on the physical characteristics of stoichiometric hydroxyapatite microspheres produced by spray-drying process through different operating conditions. Obtained hydroxyapatite microspheres are intended to be used as powder feedstock in powder bed selective laser processing additive manufacturing technologies where the flowability and the particle size distribution of the powder feedstock are of special importance. The powders produced at different spray-drying operating parameters were evaluated by analysing the particle size, shape, moisture, and agglomerates strength. Spray air pressure (0.25-2 bars) and the solid content of the slurries (10-50% wt.) were the most influent parameters to control the final particle size distribution, whereas the higher process recovery rate (79%) was obtained at specific values of inlet temperature (250 °C), spray air pressure (2 bar), and feed rate (4.9 kg.h −1). A 5 wt% of polyvinyl alcohol as an organic binder to the ceramic part was found to increase the strength of the granules. The flowability of the produced hydroxyapatite microspheres (x 50 = 64 μm; span = 1.77) was found to fulfil the defined feedstock requirements (e.g., Hausner ratio < 1.25), without alteration of the physico-chemical properties of the material. These promising results confirm the use of a spray dryer as an efficient method for the production of hydroxyapatite microspheres for powder bed selective laser processing.

Surface coating approaches for silicon (Si) have demonstrated potential for use as anodes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) to address the large volume change and low conductivity of Si. However, the practical application of these approaches remains a challenge because they do not effectively accommodate the pulverization of Si during cycling or require complex processes. Herein, Si-embedded titanium oxynitride (Si-TiON) was proposed and successfully fabricated using a spray-drying process. TiON can be uniformly coated on the Si surface via self-assembly, which can enhance the Si utilization and electrode stability. This is because TiON exhibits high mechanical strength and electrical conductivity, allowing it to act as a rigid and electrically conductive matrix. As a result, the Si-TiON electrodes delivered an initial reversible capacity of 1663 mA h g−1 with remarkably enhanced capacity retention and rate performance.

The encapsulation efficiency (EE%) and structural changes within the Anthraquinones-encapsulated casein micelles (CM) powders were evaluated in this study. For this purpose, the anthraquinone powder extracted from Aloevera, its freeze-dried powder (FDP) and whole leaf Aloe vera gel (WLAG) has been encapsulated in CM through ultrasonication prior to spray dying to produce nanocapsules: CM encapsulated anthraquinone powder (CMAQP), CM encapsulated freeze-dried powder (CMFDP) and CM encapsulated Whole leaf aloe vera gel (CMWLAG). Based on the pH of the solution before drying, CMAQP had the highest EE% following spray drying. However, due to air-interface-related dehydration stresses, SD resulted in a slight decrease in the EE% of anthraquinones (aloin, aloe-emodin, and rhein) in CMAQP. Meanwhile, a significant increase in EE% of CMFDP was observed compared to the aqueous state. According to SEM findings, the particle size of CMAQP was 2.39 µm and ξ-potential of ~−17mV. The CMFDP had a rough fractal surface with large particle sizes and potential of 3.49 µm and ~−11mV respectively. CM deformed, having the least EE% and lowest ξ-potential (−4.5 mV). Spray drying enhances melanoidin formation in CMWLAG, as evidenced by the highest chroma values. The results suggested that EE%, stability, and degree of Maillard reaction are closely linked to the type of anthraquinone encapsulated, the pH of the solution, and the nanostructure of casein micelles during spray drying.

Essential oils (EOs) are naturally occurring volatile aromatic compounds extracted from different parts of plants. They are made up of components like terpenes, phenols, etc., and are chemically unstable and susceptible to oxidative deterioration, leading to reduced shelf-life and overall degradation of the product. Encapsulation of EOs in a matrix can prevent degradation of the active ingredient and improve the shelf-life. In this paper, we report encapsulation of Dhavana oil (Artemisia pellen) in a modified starch matrix using a spray-drying technique. Physico-chemical properties of neat and encapsulated Dhavana oil were studied. We selected two powder bases: CaCO3 and TALC and, loaded neat and encapsulated Dhavana oil in it, studied their stability and interaction with the base matrices at 3 °C, 22 °C and 45 °C up to 2 months under closed conditions and one week at 22 °C and 45 °C under open condition. Thermal degradation pattern was studied for neat and encapsulated Dhavana oil and modified starch. Release of primary active component of neat and encapsulated Dhavana oil from the base matrices was evaluated with GCMS. Stability study and release mechanism were elucidated to understand the release pattern in different base powders under similar conditions. Retention of hydroxydhavanone was found to be better in TALC than CaCO3, and therefore, the former can be considered a suitable base matrix for developing a stable powder formulation with an optimum release of the oil. Dhavana oil is known for its anti-microbial activity, and hence, neat and encapsulated Dhavana oil was tested on different bacterial and fungal strains. The encapsulated oil depicted good anti-microbial efficacy against various bacterial and fungal strains, which is a step forward for developing anti-microbial formulations. Thus, the reported work will provide helpful information on cosmetic formulation and, therefore, be useful for perfumery, food, and cosmetic industries.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of spray drying (SD) and freeze-drying (FD) on the microencapsulation of green coffee extracts by using polydextrose (PD) and inulin (IN) as encapsulating agents and their physicochemical, bioactive compounds’ stability, phenolic compounds’ bioaccessibility after digestion, and sensory effects in unfermented dairy beverages. The extract encapsulated with IN by FD had lower moisture content, water activity, and hygroscopicity, while particles encapsulated by SD exhibited a spherical shape and the structure of the FD products was irregular. No difference was observed in phenolic compounds’ bioaccessibility. Dairy beverages with added encapsulated extracts had higher total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Microencapsulation allowed a controlled release of the bioactive compounds with an increase in the content of caffeine, chlorogenic acid, and trigonelline during storage. The dairy beverage with added extract encapsulated with IN by FD had the highest scores of acceptability regarding the overall impression and purchase intent.

Hydrogels warrant attention as a potential material for use in sustained pulmonary drug delivery due to their swelling and mucoadhesive features. Herein, hyaluronic acid (HA) is considered a promising material due to its therapeutic potential, the effect on lung inflammation, and possible utility as an excipient or drug carrier. In this study, the feasibility of using HA hydrogels (without a model drug) to engineer inhalation powders for controlled pulmonary drug delivery was assessed. A combination of chemical crosslinking and spray-drying was proposed as a novel methodology for the preparation of inhalation powders. Different crosslinkers (urea; UR and glutaraldehyde; GA) were exploited in the hydrogel formulation and the obtained powders were subjected to extensive characterization. Compositional analysis of the powders indicated a crosslinked structure of the hydrogels with sufficient thermal stability to withstand spray drying. The obtained microparticles presented a spherical shape with mean diameter particle sizes from 2.3 ± 1.1 to 3.2 ± 2.9 μm. Microparticles formed from HA crosslinked with GA exhibited a reasonable aerosolization performance (fine particle fraction estimated as 28 ± 2%), whereas lower values were obtained for the UR-based formulation. Likewise, swelling and stability in water were larger for GA than for UR, for which the results were very similar to those obtained for native (not crosslinked) HA. In conclusion, microparticles could successfully be produced from crosslinked HA, and the ones crosslinked by GA exhibited superior performance in terms of aerosolization and swelling.

In the present study, we evaluated the effect of spray-drying formulations and operating parameters of a laboratory-scale spray-dryer on the characteristics of spray-dried powders containing two Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteriophages exhibiting different morphotypes: a podovirus (LUZ19) and a myovirus (14-1). We optimized the production process for bacteriophage-loaded powders, with an emphasis on long-term storage under ICH (international conference on harmonization) conditions. D-trehalose-/L-isoleucine-containing bacteriophage mixtures were spray-dried from aqueous solutions using a Büchi Mini Spray-dryer B-290 (Flawil, Switzerland). A response surface methodology was used for the optimization of the spray-drying process, with the following as-evaluated parameters: Inlet temperature, spray gas flow rate, and the D-trehalose/L-isoleucine ratio. The dried powders were characterized in terms of yield, residual moisture content, and bacteriophage lytic activity. L-isoleucine has demonstrated a positive impact on the activity of LUZ19, but a negative impact on 14-1. We observed a negligible impact of the inlet temperature and a positive correlation of the spray gas flow rate with bacteriophage activity. After optimization, we were able to obtain dry powder preparations of both bacteriophages, which were stable for a minimum of one year under different ICH storage conditions (up to and including 40 °C and 75% relative humidity).

The fungus Beauveria bassiana is widely used for pest control; however, biostability and dispersion for broth pulverization are limiting factors for its application in the field. In this context, formulation techniques such as microencapsulation are viable alternatives. The aim of this work is to optimize B. bassiana formulations by spray dryer and evaluate its stability and biological activity against Spodoptera cosmioides compared to ionic gelatinization formulations. The fungus was biocompatible with all evaluated biopolymers (lignin, cellulose, starch, humic substances, and alginate). The encapsulation by spray drying was optimized by factorial design in an inlet and outlet air temperature of 120°C and 68°C, respectively; aspirator rate of 35 m3·h−1, feed flow rate of 12 mL·min−1; and drying gas flow at 35 L·h−1. The ionic gelation capsules were obtained using a 0.5% quantity of conidia in a 1% sodium alginate solution dropped into a 0.5 mol·L−1 CaCl2 solution using a peristaltic pump. Spray drying provided smaller microcapsules than those by ionic gelation. Both techniques produced more stable conidia when exposed to temperature and UV-radiation than non-formulated B. bassiana. The formulations prepared by spray drying showed gains at aqueous dispersion. Biological assays against Spodoptera cosmioides showed a mortality rate of up to 90%. These results demonstrate the suitability of encapsulating B. bassiana conidia stably in aqueous dispersion without loss of viability and virulence.

International audience; Due to their high porosity and chemical versatility, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit physical properties appealing for photonic-based applications. While several MOF photonic structures have been reported, examples of applications thereof are mainly limited to chemical sensing. Herein, the range of application of photonic MOFs is extended to local thermal and photothermal sensing by integrating them into a new architecture: MOF photonic balls. Micrometric-sized photonic balls are made of monodispersed MOFs colloids that are self-assembled via spray-drying, a low-cost, green, and high-throughput method. The versatility of the process allows tuning the morphology and the composition of photonic balls made of several MOFs and composites with tailored optical properties. X-ray nanotomography and environmental hyperspectral microscopy enable analysis of single objects and their evolution in controlled atmosphere and temperature. Notably, in presence of vapors, the MOF photonic balls act as local, label-free temperature probes. Importantly, compared to other thermal probes, the temperature detection range of these materials can be adjusted "on-demand." As proof of concept, the photonic balls are used to determine local temperature profiles around a concentrated laser beam. More broadly, this work is expected to stimulate new research on the physical properties of photonic MOFs providing new possibilities for device fabrication.

Ethyl cellulose (EC)-based microparticles, with and without the incorporation of polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a second encapsulating agent, were prepared using the spray-drying process for the encapsulation of retinoic acid (RA). The production of a suitable controlled delivery system for this retinoid will promote its antitumor efficiency against acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) due to the possibility of increasing the bioavailability of RA. Product yield ranged from 12 to 28% in all the microparticle formulations, including unloaded microparticles and RA-loaded microparticles. Microparticles with a mean diameter between 0.090 ± 0.002 and 0.54 ± 0.02 µm (number size distribution) and with an irregular form and rough surface were obtained. Furthermore, regarding RA-loaded microparticles, both polymer-based formulations exhibited an encapsulation efficiency of around 100%. A rapid and complete RA release was reached in 40 min from EC− and EC + PEG-based microparticles.

In the present study, carotenoids were recovered from processing sweet corn by-products (SCB). The total carotenoid content determined in the SCB extract was 1.19 mg/100 g DW, and the principal carotenoids identified by the HPLC technique were zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin and lutein. Freeze- and spray-drying techniques were applied for the encapsulation of SCB extract; for this purpose, four different wall materials were used: two proteins (soy and pea) and two carbohydrates (maltodextrin and inulin). The physicochemical characteristics of eight encapsulates were determined to assess their stability. The obtained results indicate that, by using the freeze-drying method, better water activity, moisture content as well as encapsulation efficiency were achieved. Spray-drying resulted in better flowing properties. All obtained encapsulates were microbiologically safe for food applications due to the fact that the obtained results are in agreement with the requirements for consumer safety, i.e., for further food applications and scale-up processes. Chemometric classification and ranking techniques were applied to observe potential grouping among the investigated encapsulates and to select the most favorable encapsulates regarding the used wall materials and encapsulation techniques for the assessment of sustainability in food products. The most suitable wall material and encapsulation technique for the assessment of sustainability in food products was produced by freeze-drying pea protein as a wall material (FDP).

Polyphenols have received great attention as important phytochemicals beneficial for human health. They have a protective effect against cardiovascular disease, obesity, cancer and diabetes. The utilization of polyphenols as natural antioxidants, functional ingredients and supplements is limited due to their low stability caused by environmental and processing conditions, such as heat, light, oxygen, pH, enzymes and so forth. These disadvantages are overcome by the encapsulation of polyphenols by different methods in the presence of polyphenolic carriers. Different encapsulation technologies have been established with the purpose of decreasing polyphenol sensitivity and the creation of more efficient delivery systems. Among them, spray-drying and freeze-drying are the most common methods for polyphenol encapsulation. This review will provide an overview of scientific studies in which polyphenols from different sources were encapsulated using these two drying methods, as well as the impact of different polysaccharides used as carriers for encapsulation.

The study compares the impact of freeze- and spray-drying (FD, SD) microencapsulation methods on the content of β-glucan, total polyphenols (TP), total flavonoids (TF), phenolic acids (PA), and antioxidant activity (AA) in commercially β-glucan powder (Pleurotus ostreatus) using maltodextrin as a carrier. Morphology (scanning electron microscopy- SEM), yield, moisture content (MC), and water activity (aw) were also evaluated in the samples. Our examinations revealed significant structural differences between powders microencapsulated by the drying methods. As compared to non-encapsulated powder, the SD powder with yield of 44.38 ± 0.55% exhibited more reduced (p < 0.05) values for aw (0.456 ± 0.001) and MC (8.90 ± 0.44%) than the FD one (yield: 27.97 ± 0.33%; aw: 0.506 ± 0.002; MC: 11.30 ± 0.28%). In addition, the highest values for β-glucan content (72.39 ± 0.38%), TPC (3.40 ± 0.17 mg GAE/g), and TFC (3.07 ± 0.29 mg QE/g) have been detected in the SD powder. Our results allow for the conclusion that the SD microencapsulation method using maltodextrin seems to be more powerful in terms of the β-glucan powder yield and its contents of β-glucan, TP, and TF as compared to the FD technique.

Cytisine (CYT) has emerged as a promising molecule to treat nicotine addiction, since it acts as a partial agonist of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. However, its unfavorable pharmacokinetic properties lead to multiple administrations per day, reducing the patient’s compliance and increasing the side effects. To overcome these drawbacks, CYT buccal administration is here proposed. Firstly, CYT stability in the buccal environment was assessed and its intrinsic ability to permeate/penetrate the tissue was determined by applying CYT solutions at increasing concentrations. Furthermore, a spray-drying method was selected and optimized as it is an eco-friendly, easily scalable and effective technique to obtain uniform and reproducible CYT-loaded (5% w/w) pharmaceutical powders, which were directly compressed, thus obtaining different buccal delivery systems (BDSs). The obtained BDSs were homogeneous and reproducible and embedded CYT in its amorphous form. The mechanism of CYT release was evaluated in vitro and found to be mainly driven by a Fickian diffusion phenomenon. Predominantly, the ex vivo permeation assays highlighted the ability of the BDSs to enhance CYT permeation, also producing high drug fluxes through the mucosa. Speculative mathematical evaluations based on the already-known CYT pharmacokinetic parameters showed that CYT-loaded BDSs could potentially be sufficient to obtain a therapeutic effect, thus making the reported formulations suitable candidates for further in vivo trials.

Background: One of the most used and effective preservation strategies in foods is drying. However, there are problems with the rheological properties, color, and viability of lactic acid bacteria in the yogurt once reconstituted when applying such conservation strategies. Objectives: Determine the concentration of the type of texture improver and drying that minimizes the negative effect on the rheological, color, and microbiological properties of a reconstituted yogurt powder. Methods: Intended to determine the texture improver which increases rheological properties of reconstituted yogurt powder, a mixture type experimental design was applied where three texture improvers were assessed; carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) (mass fraction 0 - 1), pectin (mass fraction 0 - 1), and xanthan gum (mass fraction 0 - 1). The rheological parameters; consistency index (K), flow behavior (n), viscosity at 100s-1 (η), the storage (G') and loss (G'') modules, and the phase shift angle (δ) of each of the reconstitutions were considered as design-dependent variables. Secondly, a central composite design (face-centered) was used for assessing the effectiveness of the drying (convection, spray-drying, and freeze-drying), the concentration of the texture improver (0.0 - 1.0 %), and the yogurt powder concentration (8.0 - 15.0 %). The above-mentioned rheological parameters, color, and viability of the lactic acid bacteria from each reconstituted yogurt powder were considered as the dependent variables. Optimization sought to match the parameters of reconstituted yogurt powder that approximated the conditions of fresh yogurt. Results: The independent variables in their lineal expression and some interactions between them had statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). At a concentration of 10.59 % with 0.03 % xanthan gum, the reconstitution of freeze-dried yogurt powder was the optimized condition (p < 0.05) and obtained the rheological, color, and microbiological parameters closest to fresh yogurt. Conclusions: The drying of the yogurt by freeze-drying mixed with xanthan gum as a texture improver allowed to obtain a reconstituted yogurt with properties close to the fresh product for direct consumption. Sin embargo, existen problemas en las propiedades reológicas, el color y la viabilidad de bacterias ácido lácticas en el yogur una vez reconstituido al aplicar tales estrategias de conservación. Objetivos: Determinar la concentración del tipo de mejorador de textura y secado que minimiza el efecto negativo sobre las propiedades reológicas, de color y microbiológicas de un yogur en polvo reconstituido. Métodos: Para determinar el mejorador de textura que aumente las propiedades reológicas del yogur en polvo reconstituido, se aplicó un diseño experimental de tipo de mezcla donde se evaluaron tres mejoradores de textura; carboximetilcelulosa (CMC) (fracción de masa 0 -1), pectina (fracción de masa 0 -1) y goma xantan (fracción de masa 0 -1); los parámetros reológicos: índice de consistencia (K), comportamiento de flujo (n), viscosidad a 100s-1 (η), módulos de almacenamiento (G ') y pérdida (G' '), y ángulo de desfase (δ) de cada una de las reconstituciones fueron considerados como variables dependientes. En segundo lugar, se utilizó un diseño central compuesto (centrado a las caras) para evaluar el efecto del tipo de secado (convección, secado por aspersión y liofilización), la concentración del mejorador de textura (0.0 - 1.0 %) y concentración del yogur en polvo (8.0 - 15.0 %). Como variables dependientes se consideraron los parámetros reológicos mencionados anteriormente, el color y la viabilidad de las bacterias ácido lácticas de cada yogur en polvo reconstituido. La optimización buscó igualar los parámetros del yogur en polvo reconstituido que se aproximaran a las condiciones del yogur fresco. Resultados: Las variables independientes en su expresión lineal y algunas interacciones entre ellas tuvieron diferencias estadísticamente significativas (p < 0.05). La reconstitución de yogur liofilizado en polvo a una concentración de 10.59 % con 0.03 % de goma xantan, fueron las condiciones optimizadas (p < 0.05) que obtuvieron los parámetros reológicos, de color y microbiológicos más cercanos al yogur fresco. Conclusión: El secado del yogur por liofilización mezclado con goma xantan como mejorador de la textura, permitió obtener un yogur reconstituido con propiedades cercanas al producto fresco para consumo directo.

Cereals are subject to contamination by pathogenic fungi, which damage grains and threaten public health with their mycotoxins. Fusarium graminearum and its mycotoxins, trichothecenes B (TCTBs), are especially targeted in this study. Recently, the increased public and political awareness concerning environmental issues tends to limit the use of traditional fungicides against these pathogens in favor of eco-friendlier alternatives. This study focuses on the development of biofungicides based on the encapsulation of a curcumin derivative, tetrahydrocurcumin (THC), in polysaccharide matrices. Starch octenylsuccinate (OSA-starch) and chitosan have been chosen since they are generally recognized as safe. THC has been successfully trapped into particles obtained through a spray-drying or freeze-drying processes. The particles present different properties, as revealed by visual observations and scanning electron microscopy. They are also different in terms of the amount and the release of encapsulated THC. Although freeze-dried OSA-starch has better trapped THC, it seems less able to protect the phenolic compound than spray-dried particles. Chitosan particles, both spray-dried and lyophilized, have shown promising antifungal properties. The IC50 of THC-loaded spray-dried chitosan particles is as low as 0.6 ± 0.3 g/L. These particles have also significantly decreased the accumulation of TCTBs by 39%.

Alginate microparticles were prepared by spray drying technique and chemically cross-linked with epichlorohydrin. Microparticles were characterized by size, surface morphology (SEM), zeta potential, thermal analysis (TGA/DSC) and Raman spectroscopy. Microparticles cross-linked with epichlorohydrin were found to have averaged sizes of 648 nm, and zeta potential value of −84 mV. The adsorption capacity of the matrix was studied using Lysozyme and Chymotrypsinogen as model proteins. The equilibrium isotherms were described by the Langmuir and Hill models, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities for Lysozyme and Chymotrypsinogen were 1880 and 3034 mg/g of Alg microparticle, respectively, which represent excellent results compared to the adsorption capacities showed by commercial resins and macro spheres of alginate. At the end, the capacity of selection and recovery of cross-linked alginate microparticles was assayed for both proteins. Fil: Brassesco, Maria Emilia. The objective of the work was to produce a new excipient based on D-leucine to improve the aerosolization properties of the poorly flowable micronized budesonide. The D-leucine powders produced by a nano spray-dryer were characterized in terms of dimensions, morphology, thermal behavior, X-ray powder diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. Then, micronized budesonide was mixed with the different leucine powders obtained or commercial D-leucine at different weight ratios (1:1, 5:1, 10:1) to investigate their aerodynamic characteristics using a glass twin-stage impinger. Commercial D-leucine powder is composed of large flattened crystals of about 30 μm with ~3 μm thickness, while micronized budesonide appeared as small irregular crystals. After spray-drying, D-leucine particles appeared wrinkled and porous. Particle sizes were mainly influenced by the amino acid concentration. Aerodynamic assessment showed that D-leucine was able to improve the aerodynamic behavior of micronized budesonide from about 28 to 45% emitted fraction. The best aerodynamic properties were obtained with D-leucine powdered from a water:ethanol (1:1, v:v) solution and using micronized budesonide:leucine weight ratio of 5:1. The direct physical mixing of the atomized D-leucine with the micronized active pharmaceutical ingredient is a valid and economic alternative for the production of carrier-free dry powders for inhalation.

Thermal treatment of ferrite magnetic nanoparticles in NaCl matrix gives an opportunity to increase their specific magnetization with preservation of nanoscale size. Composite materials based on mixed ferrites Co0.65Zn0.35Fe2O4 and Mg 0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 were synthesized by spray-drying of aqueous suspensions in presence of NaCl and annealed at 300 –900 °C. The microstructure and phase composition of nanoparticles before and after annealing were studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), X-ray diffraction analysis and IR spectroscopy. The magnetic properties of nanoparticles were estimated using a ponderomotive method of measuring the specific magneti zation at room temperature in a magnetic field with an induction of 0.86 T. The increase of the annealing temperature up to 900 °C was established to lead to the increase in the specific magnetization of ferrites – from 32.79 to 91.3 emu/g (Co0.65Zn0.35Fe2O4) and from 2.76 to 22.31 emu/g (Mg 0.5 Zn 0.5Fe2O4) due to recrystallization processes and increase of crystallinity degree of the ferrites. Due to the NaCl insulating layer, the particle size increases just slightly (from ~ 10 nm before annealing to ~ 60 nm after annealing at 900 °C). This method is effective for substantial increase in specific magnetization of ferrite nanoparticles with preservation of their nanoscale size.

The study investigated the influence of spray- and freeze-drying on the bio-oil powder quality. The powders were characterized by process efficiency, structure, colour, oil and bioactive compounds contents, fatty acid composition and oxidative stability. Cold-pressed bio-oils of evening primrose, borage and blueweed were homogenized with wall materials and water followed by spray-drying at 130°C inlet air temperature or freeze-drying at −56°C. It was shown that lower encapsulation efficiency of freeze-drying process correlated with higher surface oil content. The content of bioactive compounds was more affected by the processes than the fatty acid composition regardless of the method of drying. The powders produced by freeze-drying had a higher tocopherol content than those produced by spray-drying. Both spray- and freeze-drying significantly contributed to the changes of sterols concentration, but the changes were greater for bio-oil powders obtained by spray-drying.

Tamarillo fruit contains many phytochemicals that have beneficial therapeutic and nutritional properties. Spray-drying is widely used to preserve fruit puree in powder form. However, to obtain high-quality fruit powder, the optimisation of spray-drying conditions is necessary, as a high drying temperature can damage sensitive bioactive compounds. This study investigated the effects of spray-drying on the microstructure, polyphenolics, total flavonoids, total carotenoids, antioxidant activity, and anticancer capacity of tamarillo powder. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimise the spray-drying process to produce tamarillo powder. The independent variables were inlet drying temperature (120–160 °C), flow rate (1–5 g/mL), and maltodextrin concentration (0–10%). These variables influenced the microstructural attributes, bioactive components, and cytotoxicity of the spray-dried tamarillo powder. The increase in polyphenols and antioxidant activities were favoured under high-temperature spray drying conditions and a low carrier concentration. The optimised spray-drying conditions for producing tamarillo powder with high antioxidant and anticancer activities, high yield, and stable bioactive compounds were found to be at 146.8 °C inlet temperature, and a flow rate of 1.76 g/mL.
