Mastic oil (MO) is extracted from the resin of the bark of Pistacia lentiscus var. chia, a tree abundantly grown in the Greek island of Chios. Various biological activities, such as antimicrobial, anticancer and antioxidant, have been associated with the dietary intake of MO. However, little is known about MO’s potential anti-inflammatory effects, while some of its main chemical constituents were reported to exert significant anti-inflammatory activity. This study aims to assay the bioactivity of MO on in vitro and in vivo experimental inflammation models, in particular on LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages, murine primary peritoneal macrophages and a model of zymosan-induced peritonitis in BALB/c mice. The per os administration of MO inhibited the recruitment of macrophages into the peritoneal cavity of zymosan-treated mice, but did not affect neutrophil mobilisation or the levels of IL-6 or TNF-α in the peritoneal fluid. Similarly, IL-6 and TNF-α secretion in primary LPS-stimulated macrophages was not affected by MO, but the levels of phosphoproteins that activate inflammation in macrophages were differentially regulated. Finally, MO and some of its individual constituents reduced nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 and TNF-α levels in supernatants of LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells and inhibited their phagocytosis rate. Our data imply that MO may promote an anti-inflammatory transition in macrophages due to the combined bioactivities of its individual constituents. Thus, as a mixture of various compounds, MO seems to affect multiple molecular mechanisms that are involved in the development of inflammation. Therefore, more research, focusing on MO’s individual constituents and employing various pre-clinical inflammation models that activate different mechanisms, is required for a detailed investigation of the oil’s potential anti-inflammatory activity.

The supported Ni-B/KIT-6 amorphous alloy catalyst was prepared by chemical reduction method for the hydrogenation reaction of α-pinene. The catalyst was characterized by XRD, BET, SEM–EDS, TEM, XPS, ICP and DLS, the influences of single factor of catalyst on its structure, morphology and performance were investigated and analyzed. It was found that the amount of Ni loading, preparation pH and B/Ni molar ratio had great effects on the reduction amount, dispersion and specific surface area of the catalyst, resulted in affecting the catalytic performance of the catalyst. The optimum synthesis conditions were at m(Ni2+)/m(KIT-6) = 1:3, pH 13 and n(B)/n(Ni) = 1.5, obtaining a 90.62% conversion of α-pinene and 97.67% selectivity of cis-pinane. In addition, the catalysts also exhibited better repeatability and stability.

Pinene is an active natural monoterpene from plants and has important applications in flavorings, fragrances,and pesticides. Especially, pinene dimers are regarded as renewable fuels with high density. However, the microbial pinene production was limited by the low activity pinene synthase. In this study, the pinene synthase activity was improved by fusion linker optimization and chaperon coexpression. To construct the pinene pathway in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, YPL062W gene was deleted to increase the MVA pathway precursor acetyl-CoA. Truncated 3-hydroxyl-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (tHMG1), isopentenyl-diphosphate isomerase (IDI1), and farnesyl diphosphate synthase mutant (ERG20F96W−N127W) were then integrated to improve the GPP pool. Pinene synthase tPt1 was expressed in the constructed engineered yeast, and the titer of pinene reached 0.166 mg/L. GPP is the direct precursor of pinene, ERG20ww and tPt1 were fused by different linkers and orders to improve the accessibility of GPP. Pinene titer reached 9.94 mg/L by fusion these proteins in the order of ERG20ww and tPt1 and with a flexible linker (G)8. After that, several chaperons were coexpressed and the chaperon Sil1p improved the pinene titer to 10.2 mg/L with a yield of 1.63 mg/L·OD600. The results presented here provide novel information on the applications of protein fusion and protein chaperons in microbial pinene production.

Introduction: Species of the Salvia genus are aromatic herbs and traditionally used for many medicinal purposes in Anatolia. The genus has produced an extraordinarily large number of beneficial secondary metabolites belonging to numerous chemical groups. Salvia pisidica is an endemic plant of southwest Anatolia, the dried parts of which are used as herbal tea and local materia medica. Methods: The composition of endemic S. pisidica essential oil was determined through GC-MS studies. In vitro cytotoxicity activity and apoptosis analysis were investigated by MTT assay, q-PCR and Annexin V staining experiments. Results: Our results showed that 1,8 cineole (19.15 %) camphor (18.12 %) and γ-gurjunene (8.58 %) were the major constituents of the essential oil. It showed cytotoxic effects on the human breast cancer MCF-7, colon carcinoma Caco-2, hepatocyte carcinoma HepG2, and prostate carcinoma LnCap. The results of q-PCR and image-cytometer analysis showed that the essential oil caused induction of apoptosis by intrinsic and extrinsic pathways in all cancer cell lines. Conclusion: S. pisidica essential oil demonstrates considerable cytotoxic activity due to an apoptosis-related mechanism, suggesting that their bioactive components could be used as natural anticancer substances. © 2023 Elsevier GmbH

Introduction: White pepper is an important commodity used to produce essential oils. Differences in the oil components are determined by which region the peppers used were sourced from. Aims: The aim of this study was to analyse the components of the essential oils produced by white peppers from different regions and to examine the specificity of these peppers. Methods: This analysis was carried out using the chromatography gas – mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) method on essential oil samples made from peppers obtained from the Java, Sumatera, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi Islands. Results: The results showed that white pepper essential oil contains 22 components, and that α-pinene, ꞵ–pinene, ∆-carene, sabinene, dl-limonene, and caryophyllene were major compounds within the oils. Furthermore, it showed that α-pinene, sabinene, and caryophyllene compounds were most found in samples from the Kalimantan, Sumatra, and Sulawesi Islands respectively.Meanwhile, those from Java Island contained ꞵ – pinene, ∆-carene, and caryophyllene in similar quantities.

The oxidation of biogenic and anthropogenic compounds leads to the formation of secondary organic aerosol mass (SOA). The present study aims to investigate α-pinene, limonene, and m-cresol with regards to their SOA formation potential dependent on relative humidity (RH) under night- (NO3 radicals) and daytime conditions (OH radicals) and the resulting chemical composition. It was found that SOA formation potential of limonene with NO3 under dry conditions significantly exceeds that of the OH-radical reaction, with SOA yields of 15–30 % and 10–21 %, respectively. Additionally, the nocturnal SOA yield was found to be very sensitive towards RH, yielding more SOA under dry conditions. In contrast, the SOA formation potential of α-pinene with NO3 slightly exceeds that of the OH-radical reaction, independent from RH. On average, α-pinene yielded SOA with about 6–7 % from NO3 radicals and 3–4 % from OH-radical reaction. Surprisingly, unexpectedly high SOA yields were found for m-cresol oxidation with OH radicals (3–9 %), with the highest yield under elevated RH (9 %), which is most likely attributable to a higher fraction of 3-methyl-6-nitro-catechol (MNC). While α-pinene and m-cresol SOA was found to be mainly composed of water-soluble compounds, 50–68 % of nocturnal SOA and 22–39 % of daytime limonene SOA are water-insoluble. The fraction of SOA-bound peroxides which originated from α-pinene varied between 2 and 80 % as a function of RH. Furthermore, SOA from α-pinene revealed pinonic acid as the most important particle-phase constituent under day- and nighttime conditions with a fraction of 1–4 %. Other compounds detected are norpinonic acid (0.05–1.1 % mass fraction), terpenylic acid (0.1–1.1 % mass fraction), pinic acid (0.1–1.8 % mass fraction), and 3-methyl-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid (0.05–0.5 % mass fraction). All marker compounds showed higher fractions under dry conditions when formed during daytime and showed almost no RH effect when formed during night.

BACKGROUND The rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L., 1763) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a stored grain/seed pest of several crops. Botanicals represent an option to manage this pest, especially those with high toxicity determined by its structure and physicochemical properties and low residue left behind on treated grains/seeds. Enantiomers are bioactive molecules in organic processes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the insecticidal activity of two enantiomeric forms of the monoterpenes citronellal, limonene, linalool, menthone and α-pinene against S. oryzae adults through contact, fumigant and repellent assays. RESULTS All results were compared with absolute acetone as the negative control and those from contact assays also with malathion as the positive control. (S)-(-)-linalool was the most toxic by contact to S. oryzae and (S)-(-)-menthone through fumigation, while the two enantiomeric forms of menthone and α-pinene were the best repellents. CONCLUSIONS The high toxicity of only one of the two monoterpene enantiomers showed the importance of form and percentage of enantiomer in the commercial product, which affect the success of the product to controlling S. oryzae. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) affect human health and climate change prediction; however, the factors (e.g., temperature, acidity of pre-existing particles, and oxidants) influencing their formation are not sufficiently resolved. Using a compact chamber, the temperature and acidity dependence of SOA yields and chemical components in SOA from α -pinene ozonolysis were systematically investigated under 278, 288, and 298 K temperatures using neutral ((NH 4)2 SO 4 ) and acidic (H 2 SO 4+ ((NH 4)2 SO 4 )) seed aerosols. SOA components with m / z less than 400 were analyzed using negative electrospray ionization liquid-chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Based on the slightly negative temperature dependence of the SOA yields, the enthalpies of vaporization under neutral and acidic seed conditions were estimated to be 25 and 44 kJ mol −1 , respectively. In addition, SOA yields increased with an increase in the acidity of seed particles (solid/near-solid state) at low SOA mass loadings, when compared with the seed particle amounts. Acidity dependence analysis of the chemical formula, molecular mass, and O:C ratio of the detected compounds indicated the enhanced formation of multiple oligomers in the wide molecular mass range with a wide range of O:C ratios under acidic seed conditions. The peak abundances of some chemical compounds increased with an increase in the acidity of seed particles (e.g., m / z 197, 311, 313, 339, 355, and 383), while decreases in the peak abundances of some chemical compounds were observed (e.g., m / z 171, 185, 215, 343, and 357). The acidity dependence could be explained by acid-catalyzed heterogeneous reactions or acid-catalyzed decomposition of hydroperoxides. In addition, organosulfate (OS) formation was observed under acidic seed conditions. Six out of the 11 detected OSs were potentially formed via the aldehyde + HSO 4 - pathway.

Introduction: Infectious diseases have been responsible for an increasing number of deaths worldwide. Staphylococcus aureus has been recognized as one of the most notable causative agents of severe infections, while efflux pump (EP) expression is one of the main mechanisms associated with S. aureus resistance to antibiotics. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the potential of α-pinene as an efflux pump inhibitor in species of S. aureus carrying the TetK and MrsA proteins. Methods: The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of α-pinene and other efflux pump inhibitors were assessed using serial dilutions of each compound at an initial concentration above 1024 μg/mL. Solutions containing culture medium and bacterial inoculums were prepared in test tubes and subsequently transferred to 96-well microdilution plates. The modulation of ethidium bromide (EtBr) and antibiotics (tetracycline and erythromycin) was investigated through analysis of the modification in their MICs in the presence of a subinhibitory concentration of α-pinene (MIC/8). Wells containing only culture medium and bacterial inoculums were used as negative control. Carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP) was used as a positive control. Results: The MIC of ethidium bromide against S. aureus strains RN-4220 and IS-58 was reduced by association with α-pinene. This monoterpene potentiated the effect of tetracycline against the IS-58 strain but failed in modulating the antibacterial effect of erythromycin against RN-4220, suggesting a selective inhibitory effect on the TetK EP by α- pinene. Conclusion: In conclusion, α-pinene has promising effects against S.aureus strains, which should be useful in the combat of antibacterial resistance associated with EP expression. Nevertheless, further research is required to fully characterize its molecular mechanism of action as an EP inhibitor.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common type of head and neck malignancy. Research on essential oils (EOs) has shown important cytotoxic and anti-tumor properties, among others. Piperaceae species are rich in EOs and here we highlight Piper rivinoides Kunth. We investigated the crude EOs from P. rivinoides, their pure major constituents and an enriched fraction with the main EO compounds (EF) as cytotoxic and selective OSCC agents. EOs presented as main compounds (-)-α-pinene, (-)-β-pinene and limonene. EOs showed an IC50 lower than all isolated compounds, except for (-)-β-pinene in OSCC cells. The (-)-β-pinene induced cell death with apoptotic characteristics. Commercial standards showed greater selectivity than EOs, and (-)-β-pinene was the most selective among them. EF showed higher selectivity compared to crude EOs and carboplatin, turning it into a good candidate as an anticancer fraction. These results are important for the possible development of new treatments for OSCC.

We have performed the first comparative analysis of the potential of two physiologically-diverse model cyanobacteria, Synechococcus PCC 7002 (S.7002) and Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 (S.7942), for the photosynthetic production of four chemically-different high-value terpenes: two monoterpenes limonene and pinene, and two sesquiterpenes bisabolene and farnesene. We showed, for the first time, that S.7002 and S.7942 can produce farnesene and bisabolene, respectively. Both cyanobacteria produced farnesene (S.7942 produced more efficiently than S.7002) more efficiently than the other tested terpenes (especially pinene, the weakest produced terpene). S.7002 produced limonene more efficiently than bisabolene, whereas S.7942 produced bisabolene more efficiently than limonene. These findings suggest that S.7942 is better suited to produce sesquiterpenes than monoterpenes. Interestingly, higher levels of terpenes were produced by S.7942 and S.7002 expressing a terpene-synthase gene from both an RSF1010-derived replicating plasmid and a neutral chromosomal site, as compared to either the plasmid alone or the chromosome alone. These results suggest that in both cyanobacteria, the production of terpenes is more limited by the activity of terpene synthases than the abundance of terpene precursors. Finally, higher levels of terpenes were produced by S.7002 growing on urea (a frequent pollutant) as compared to nitrate or ammonium, the standard nitrogen sources for cyanobacteria.

Poly(δ-pinene), PδP, is a promising new material derived from naturally abundant α-pinene. One of the persistent by-products in the synthesis of δ-pinene is α-pinene which required intensive and non-sustainable isocyanate chemistry to fully remove. This work presents an in-depth study on the effects that varying quantities of α-pinene has on the ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of δ-pinene using Grubbs 3rd generation catalyst (G3). It is determined that G3 is tolerant of low quantities of α-pinene (∼40 equivalents) in the reaction mixture and results in high conversions of δ-pinene and well controlled ROMP. Increasingly higher quantities of α-pinene have an inhibitory effect on conversion and loss of control. 1H NMR experiments revealed complex signals within the Ru-alkylidene and, surprisingly, the ruthenacyclobutane regions of the spectrum as a result of δ-pinene oligomerization. However, no identifiable signals were produced or lost upon interaction with α-pinene suggesting it does not inhibit ROMP through a productive metathesis event.

Turpentine is a renewable resource, has good combustion performance, and is considered to be a fuel or promising additive to diesel fuel. This is very important for the investigation of thermal stability and energy oxidation characteristics, because evaluation of energy or fuel quality assurance and use safety are necessary. The main components of turpentine are α-pinene and β-pinene, which have unsaturated double bonds and high chemical activity. By investigating their thermal stability and oxidation reaction characteristics, we know the chemical thermal properties and thermal explosion hazard of turpentine. In this present study, the thermal stability and oxidation characteristics of α-pinene, β-pinene and α-pinene/β-pinene mixture were investigated using a high sensitivity accelerating rate calorimeter (ARC) and C80 calorimeter. The important parameters of oxidation reaction and thermal stability were obtained from the temperature, pressure and exothermic behavior in chemical reaction. The results show that α-pinene and β-pinene are thermally stable without chemical reaction under a nitrogen atmosphere even when the temperature reaches 473 K. The initial exothermic temperature of the two pinenes and their mixture is 333–338 K, and the heat release (−ΔH) of their oxidation is 2745–2973 J g−1. The oxidation activation energy (Ea) of α-pinene, β-pinene and α-pinene/β-pinene mixture is 116.25 kJ mol−1, 121.85 kJ mol−1, and 115.95 kJ mol−1, respectively. There are three steps in the oxidation of pinenes: the first is the induction period of the oxidation reaction; the second is the main oxidation stage, and the pressure is reduced; the third is thermal decomposition to produce gas.

α-Pinene, an important biologically active natural monoterpene, has been widely used in fragrances, medicines, and fine chemicals, especially, in high-density renewable fuels such as jet fuel. The development of an α-pinene production platform in a highly modifiable microbe from renewable substitute feedstocks could lead to a green, economical avenue, and sustainable biotechnological process for the biosynthesis of α-pinene. Here, we report engineering of an orthogonal biosynthetic pathway for efficient production of α-pinene in oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica that resulted in an α-pinene titer of 19.6 mg/L when using glucose as the sole carbon source, a significant 218-fold improvement than the initial titer. In addition, the potential of using waste cooking oil and lignocellulosic hydrolysate as carbon sources for α-pinene production from the engineered Y. lipolytica strains was analyzed. The results indicated that α-pinene titers of 33.8 and 36.1 mg/L were successfully obtained in waste cooking oil and lignocellulosic hydrolysate medium, thereby representing the highest titer reported to date in yeast. To our knowledge, this is also the first report related to microbial production of α-pinene from waste cooking oil and lignocellulosic hydrolysate.

Using the methods of viscometry and potentiometry, the interaction of polyacrylamide and polyacids with different hydrophobicity (polyacrylic, polymethacrylic, copolymer of methacrylic acid with а -pinene) in an acidic medium (pH 2.53.5) was studied and the composition of polymer complexes formed was determined. The dependence of the solubilizing ability of polymer complexes on the hydrophobicity of polyacids, polymer concentration, and the type of solubilizate was described.

The walnut twig beetle, Pityophthorus juglandis Blackman, and its associated fungal pathogen that causes thousand cankers disease, currently threaten the viability of walnut trees across much of North America. During a 2011 assessment of seasonal flight patterns of P. juglandis with yellow sticky traps baited with the male-produced aggregation pheromone component, 3-methyl-2-buten-1-ol, dramatically reduced catches were recorded when Tree Tanglefoot adhesive was used to coat the traps. In summer 2011, two trap adhesives were tested for potential repellency against P. juglandis in a field trapping bioassay. SuperQ extracts of volatiles from the most repellent adhesive were analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, and limonene and α-pinene were identified as predominant components. In field-based, trapping experiments both enantiomers of limonene at a release rate of ~700 mg/d conferred 91–99% reduction in trap catches of P. juglandis to pheromone-baited traps. (+)- and (‒)-α-Pinene reduced trap catch by 40 and 53%, respectively, at the highest release rate tested. While a combination of R-(+)-limonene and (+)-α-pinene resulted in a 97% reduction in the number of P. juglandis caught, the combination did not consistently result in greater flight trap catch reduction than individual limonene enantiomers. The repellent effect of limonene may be valuable in the development of a semiochemical-based tool for management of P. juglandis and thousand cankers disease.

Optically active cyclobutanediyl- and cyclopropanediylbisalkylidene dihydrazides of isonicotinic and salicylic acids were synthesized when the peroxide products of ozonolysis of (–)-α-pinene and (+)-Δ3-carene were reduced with isonicotinic and salicylic acid hydrazides in methanol, methylene chloride or tetrahydrofuran. Using QSAR models, high antituberculosis activity in combination with low values ​​of acute toxicity and minimal inhibitory concentration was predicted for the obtained compounds.

A number of chiral chelating conjugates combining a bispidine central backbone and one or two pinene side fragments were synthesized. It was shown for the first time that the synthesized compounds are capable to act as catalysts in the Henry reaction both individually and in the presence of metal salts. It was found that the best catalytic results were shown for bis-tertiary amine combining bispidinone and two (–)-myrtenol fragments, and copper as well as zinc acetates.

The genus Candida is one of the main causes of otomycosis. The growing index of fungal strains resistant to antifungals makes necessary the search for new agents and α-pinene is a phytoconstituent present in plants with remarkable antimicrobial activity, which becomes an interesting object of study. Thus, the objective of this research was to evaluate the antifungal activity of α-pinene against Candida species isolated from otomycosis, determining the Minimum Inhibitory and Fungicide Concentrations, micromorphological analysis and verifying the effects of the association with boric acid. α-pinene showed significant antifungal activity, with greater inhibitory activity against C. parapsilosis, fungicidal action and proved to be effective in inhibiting fungal structures, such as pseudo-hyphae and promoting a marked decrease in blastoconidia. The combination of α-pinene with boric acid produced additive effects that may be interesting for use in clinical practice.

In this work, the protons of the Keggin heteropolyacids were exchanged by Lewis acid metal cations generating salts that were evaluated as catalysts on the β-pinene etherification with alkyl alcohols. The Fe(III) phosphotungstate salt (i.e. FePW12O40) was the most active and selective catalyst toward the formation of α-terpinyl methyl ether, the main reaction product. The activity of FePW12O40 catalyst was higher than their precursors of synthesis (i.e. H3PW12O40, Fe(NO3)3), other Fe(III) heteropoly salts (i.e. FePMo12O40 and Fe4/3SiW12O40), and heteropoly salts of different Lewis acids (i.e. AlPW12O40, Cu3(PW12O40)2). The effects of the main variables of reaction such as temperature, catalyst load, and alcohol nature were assessed. The Fe(III) cation, as well as the phosphotungstate anion, showed to be essential to the formation of the goal-product (α-terpinyl alkyl ether).

Managers of detection programs for bark and wood-boring beetles require cost-effective trap lure combinations that maximize species detections. A trapping study was conducted in 2012 to determine the effects of ethanol and α-pinene lures on beetle catches in traps baited with ipsenol and ipsdienol lures in a stand of Pinus taeda L. in north-central Georgia. Traps with all four compounds worked well for 20 of 25 species of bark and wood-boring beetles, and associated predators. Catches of Acanthocinus obsoletus (LeConte) and Monochamus titillator (F.) (Cerambycidae), Hylastes porculus Erichson, Hylastes salebrosus Eichhoff, Hylobius pales (Herbst), Orthotomicus caelatus (Eichhoff) (Curculionidae), Thanasimus dubius (F.) (Cleridae), and Temnoscheila virescens (F.) (Trogossitidae) in baited traps increased with the addition of ethanol and α-pinene with maximum catches in traps baited with all four compounds. Catches of Ips avulsus (Eichhoff) (Curculionidae) decreased with the addition of both compounds; the lowest numbers of I. avulsus and Ips grandicollis (Eichhoff) were caught in traps baited with all four compounds. α-Pinene increased catches of Buprestis lineata F. (Buprestidae), Ips calligraphus (Germar), Pachylobius picivorus (Germar) (Curculionidae), Corticeus spp. (Tenebrionidae), Lasconotus spp., and Pycnomerus sulcicollis LeConte (Zopheridae); ethanol had no effect on these species. Ethanol increased trap catches of Curius dentatus Newman (Cerambycidae), Dryoxylon onoharaense (Murayama) (Curculionidae) and Platysoma spp. (Histeridae); α-pinene reduced catches. The data suggest that ethanol and α-pinene should be retained with ipsenol and ipsdienol as a generic trap lure blend for pine bark and wood-boring beetles in southeastern United States.

Curry leaf is an aromatic tropical and sub-tropical plant originated from India. Besides its culinary purpose, curry leaf is known for its medicinal and industrial applications. Based on ethno-botanical reports and other floral distribution studies, the germplasm rich regions of curry leaf in India could be identified into six zones as Foot hills of Himalaya, North-East region, Middle India, Eastern Ghats, Western Ghats and Andaman – Nicobar Islands. With respect to color and size of leaves, habitat and flavor, the curry leaf plant is classified as brown/ gamthi, regular and dwarf morphotypes. Four genetically diverse chemotypes of curry leaves such as -pinene, -pinene, -carophyllene and -phellandrene exist in India. Due to its nutritional value, increasing export potential, less input, lower cost of cultivation, assured income, perennial nature and constant demand in local, national and international markets, the curry leaf is being cultivated on commercial scale in recent years in India.

Lippia gracilis Schauer, Verbenaceae, is a plant popularly known as "Alecrim-da-Chapada" or “Alecrim-de-Serrote", characteristic of the savanna areas in North and Northeast Brazil. Its essential oil has been tested for pest control due to its bioactive potential. In this work, the chemical composition was analyzed and the insecticidal effect of the pinene/cineol/limonene chemotype leaf oil of L. gracilis, from Chapada das Mesas, Maranhao State, was tested against the armyworms Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). GC and GC-MS analysis identified α-pinene (24.5%), 1,8-cineole (16.2%), β-pinene (11.9%) and limonene (9.6%) as the main constituents of the oil, which presented a yield of 4.3%. For the insecticidal activity, the topical and surface contact tests were carried out with ten-days armyworm’s larvae (third instar), in different concentrations of oil and α-pinene, its main constituent. For the oil, the acute topical toxicity (LD50) was 0.09 μL/insect, and the contact surface toxicity (LC50) was 1.55 μL/cm2, while for α-pinene these values were (LD50) 0.28 μL/insect and (LC50) 2.50 μL/cm2, respectively. Thus, the oil was more active than α-pinene showing that the insecticide effect is due to the synergistic action of the mixture of its constituents. The results lead to the conclusion that the essential oil is promising as a sustainable tool in the management of S. frugiperda.

Background: As mentioned in the first part of this study, sage leaves and their essential oils are very important and most commonly used in the food, drug and perfumery indus-tries. The volatile oil of dried leaves of "Sage" Salvia Offic-inalis was obtained by hydrodistillation method (1.2% v/w). Aim of Study: The present study was a continuation of the previous one where four new constituents Kuwaitine 1, 2, 3, 4 were unveiled further analysis was carried out along the same procedure to determine and evaluate the essential components of the volatile oil of sage by (GC-MS) provided further data exposing further constituents. Material and Methods: Crushed dried Leaves (100g), were subjected to hydrodistillation E.P. (1984) GC-MS analysis was performed on Hewlett Packard 5850GC CONNECTED TO AN HP 5970 quadruple nano spectrometer (70cw) and an HP 9000 work station with helium as the carrier gas. Results: As mentioned in part one of the study 26 com-ponents representing 95% of the total oil were identified. Four of these components were not reported before. Thujone, Camphor Camphene, Pinene, Myrecene, Eucalyptol, Terpinlen, Linolool, Borneol, a-Terpinol and most abundant constituents of the oil about (51%). In addition significant amounts of unreported constituents were found to be present such as Peak No. 19, 20, 23, 40 whose Mwt and suggested stu preliminary chemical structure were elucidated and called Kuwaitene 5, 6, 7, 8 by the Author. Conclusion: GC-MS analysis of the volatile oil revealed at least 35 components, most of which could be identified, four of which were not reported in the literature before (peak no. 19, 20, 23 and 40. M. Wts 136 (Bicyclo 4. 1.0 HEPTANE, 7 (I-methylethylidene) 196 (2-Nor bornanol), 196 Isomer (Terpinyl acetate), 332 (Sandaracopimar-15, en-8, beta-yl acetate) respectively) named by the author as "Kuwaitene 5, 6, 7, 8".

The Prangos platychlaena Boiss belonged to the family of Apiaceae is a native medicinal plant of Kurdistan-Iraq. The stem, leaves and flowers of the plant were collected in the mountain of Halgurd of the Kurdistan region of Iraq, and hydrodistilated to obtain the volatile compounds, using both Gas Chromatography ( GC ) and Gas chromatography/ Mass spectroscopy (GC/MS). The results showed that the P. platychlaena Boiss essential oils containing several compounds such as Sylvestrene, α-Pinene oxide, (Z)-Epoxy-ocimene, Borneol, epi-Longipinanol, Germacrene D-4-ol, epi-α-Cadinol, 3-Thujanol acetate and Acorenone with different amount which were not found in any other Prangos species, and all showed antibacterial activity. This experiment was concducted to reveal the toxicity of flowers essentail oils of the P.platychlaena Boiss on skin burns of the rat. The results revealed that the base cream which contains 1% of the essentail oils showd less time in healing wounds in comparing with the other groups. Histological examination of the treated ones showed significantly the formation of new epiderm in those rats which were receiving the base cream containg 1% essentail oils. These finding sugested that the essentail oils of this plant can be used as a surface treatment agent for the human burns.
