This study investigates whether and what type of anti-discrimination message changes people's attitudes towards hate speech against minorities in Japan. More specifically, we focus on 1) interaction effects of an anti-discrimination message and a message that appeals to a specific morality; 2) their moderated effects by people's endorsement to a specific moral foundation and their ideological orientation; 3) difference in effects on attitudes towards the government’s regulations and people's efforts in the society to eliminate hate speech; 4) moderated effects of an injunctive, anti-discrimination message by people’s readiness to give socially desirable answers as well as a descriptive, poll result information that the majority prefers the government’s regulations on hate speech; 5) difference in effect by a target minority group of hate speech; and 6) the role of political tolerance in shaping people's attitudes towards government regulation and people's efforts in the society. more...
