Valery K. Leontiev was born in Baku in the family of a serviceman. In 1962, he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Dentistry of M.I. Kalinin Omsk State Medical Institute, where he began his professional and scientific career and remained for more than 30 years. In 1964, Valery Konstantinovich finished a clinical residency in therapeutic dentistry. From 1964 to 1969, he worked as an assistant in the department of biochemistry. In 1970 he was appointed the head of the Central Scientific Research Laboratory (CSRL) of Omsk State Medical Institute and worked in this position until 1980. From 1980 to 1986, he was the head of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry.Леонтьев Валерий Константинович родился в Баку в семье военнослужащего. There is scant documentation of the origins of dentistry in countries of the Middle East. This paper aims to identify and detail the development of dentistry in one of the smaller countries in the Middle East, Kuwait that has played a pivotal role in a wide range of political and socio-economic developments in the past fifty years.

Objectives: the name of Jan Evangelista Purkyně (Purkinje in German), born in Bohemia in 1787 and died in Prague in 1869, is mainly associated with discoveries in histology and specialist fields of Medicine like embriology, histological techniques, ophthalmology, cardiology and neurophysiology. This short article presents a brief account of his life, commemorates his achievements in biology and medicine but also in in the politics and literature of his Country (he was elected to the Diet of Bohemia but also he composed poems and important translations from German, French and Italian languages into Czech) and examines in depth his contribution to Dentistry. Materials and Methods: Purkyně’s major contributions to Dentistry, which focused on embryology and dental histology, endodontics and periodontology, are traced to two dissertations in Latin which were discussed by his pupils (Meyer Fraenkel and Isaac Raschkow), at Breslau University in 1835: we present a brief summary of each, with the major innovative findings highlighted. Results: the two dissertations contain remarkable, though often overlooked, contributions to Dentistry. Among these we can indicate the individuation of: the dental cement (substantia ostoidea), the acquired dental pellicle, the nature of optical illusion of Hunter-Schreger lines, the “enamel pulp” from which the enamel would evolve, the sub-odontoblastic nervous plexus which is the cause of tooth sensitivity, the predentine, the organic nature of the process of enamel formation, the dentine and enamel formation in opposing directions, the presence of alveolus membrane (id est: the periodontium). Conclusions: after reviewing the main innovations these two dissertations made to Dentistry, Purkyně’s personal share in both is very clear. Both the two his pupils acknowledged their debt to Purkyně and also famous contemporary Purkinje scientists such as Alexander Nasmyth, Sir Richard Owen, Sir James Paget had no doubt he is had generated the ideas expressed in the two little treatises.

This review focuses on the characteristics and applications of biomaterials through the ages, ranging from the prehistoric times to the beginning of the era of modern medicine, which has been arbitrarily set to the middle of the 19th century, when aseptic procedures, antiseptic substances and modern anesthetics were developed. After a brief discussion on the definition of "biomaterial" from an historical point of view and a short introduction on the general history of surgery and dentistry, each material or class of materials will be presented with references listed in chronological order and, where possible, with their real, scientifically demonstrated effects on biological tissues. Particular attention has been given to references that are nowadays considered spurious or affected by translation errors or other kinds of biases.

The United Kingdom has a long history of many good dental periodicals. The reputation of its scientific publication is a major mark of any professional organisation. Without doubt the British Dental Journal (BDJ) is very highly regarded throughout the worldwide scientific and clinical community, frequently appearing in important citation indices. This does not happen by chance. It needs an enthusiastic, skilled team led by a gifted editor. Stephen Hancocks has reached his fifteenth year as editor-in-chief of the BDJ, following in the footsteps of illustrious predecessors. Part 1 examines who they were and when they held the reins of the journal in the early days. Part 2 looks at the post-war editors.

Teaching history of dentistry and/or medicine in dental schools is not a priority today. A half a century ago it was part of a significant number of dental school curricula. As advances in science occurred and more demand on the curriculum were made, history of medicine and dentistry (HMD) was largely cast aside. In a recent survey of 393 dental programs in 100 countries on five continents, only 18.8% have a stand-alone course in HMD. Nearly half of the programs though have at least 1-2 hours of curriculum time devoted to HMD. When we consider a subset of the above survey, only 5% of dental schools in the US and Canada have a stand-alone course. The exclusion of HMD from current dental curricula is shortsighted. Teaching only current and state-of-the art aspects of dentistry is like showing a still image from the end of a movie without watching the rest.

The history of dentistry and medicine has a deep and ancient bond with the history of anatomy. From the ancient times to the present, the study of the human body represents the basis for research and clinical therapy. The historical contribution of anatomists to the development of dental medicine also helped in its characterization as an integrated but special and independent branch of medicine. From Galen's studies on animals to the discoveries of dental hard tissues characteristics using a microscope, this paper provides a brief literature review of how anatomy broadly contributed to the development of the dental sciences and how it still allows us to direct critical and fundamental anatomical-clinical paths for modern patient care. The history of the anatomy of teeth, description of skull bones, maxillary sinus characterization, the salivary glands, the tongue and labial musculature, and the microscopic anatomy of dental hard tissues will be examined. Historical research on the understanding of and progress in the oral field is of utmost importance in current clinical practice, thus inducing a future orientation in research. Most of the research especially that connected to the more distant historical periods has seen as main characters great personalities of morphological sciences, which contributes constituted fundamental basis for dental clinical aspects. Through a punctual and continuous historical assay, the ancient insights are reconnected to more recent knowledge and distinct research, thus permitting a detailed reconstruction of the historical-anatomical course in the progress of knowledge regarding the oral cavity and related anatomical structures.

Equine dentistry has been practiced for almost 3000 years, making it one of the oldest areas of equine health care. Progress has been slow and mirrored changes seen in human medical care. Many horsemen practiced equine dentistry during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Most of what was known then concentrated on sharp enamel points and abnormal dental occlusal wear. This changed slowly in the late twentieth century as research in equine dentistry increased. Today, veterinarians performing equine dentistry focus on detailed oral examination and base treatment for proper diagnosis of orthodontic, endodontic, periodontal, or other forms of dental disease.

The rationale that underpins volunteering has long fascinated behavioral scientists. James Meyrick Croker's personal life, professional career and community engagement conform to the classic twentieth century model for professional behavior. Accordingly, the authors use historical methods of investigation to evaluate the influences on and the legacies from a remarkable contribution to the professions and the community. The narrative demonstrates elements of altruism, collaboration, conviction, compassion, drive, entrepreneurialism, familial and grammar school influence, leadership, pragmatism and vision. Croker's professional and community service was multi-organizational. Concurrent demands on his time warranted discipline, energy and expertise. For the behavioral scientist, achievement, affiliation, nature and nurture appear relevant to the outcome. Available archives provide no evidence of ego-driven motivation. Dental modification is a cultural based display of personal adornment and social status with a long history, widely practiced. Among Australian Aboriginal cultures dental modification appears to have been limited to exarticulation. Although it is not known if the practice was introduced to Australian or arose in isolation the archaeological record hints at Australian contexts that predate those elsewhere. Exarticulation, along with many aspects of the hunter-gatherer lifestyle, was abandoned after European colonization.

Anatomy, comparative anatomy and embryology are fundamental to taxonomy and evolutionary biology. In the mid-nineteenth century many anatomists and zoologists made major contributions to more than one of these disciplines and a surprising number of them were also histologists. Historical accounts of discoveries and developments in anatomy, and in particular dental histology, rarely consider broader contributions and have tended to be concerned with establishing historical priority about who discovered or described what first. The period 1830 to 1840 saw new developments in light microscopy that enabled studies of histology, cellular pathology and embryology. It also saw a shift away from older ideas such as Naturphilosophie and vitalism towards a more rigorous experimental approach to scientific investigation. Many scientists with diverse research interests were working in parallel on comparative dental histology and were in many cases largely unaware of each other's work. One researcher, Anders Retzius, travelled widely across Europe, corresponded regularly with his scientific colleagues and, probably unbeknownst to himself in his own lifetime, made a lasting contribution to dental histology. Anders Retzius was a clinician, an anatomist, a comparative anatomist, a histologist and latterly an anthropologist. His life and career spanned the whole of this fast-moving period in the history of anatomy and histology.

Walter C. Guralnick, a major figure in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, educational innovator, master surgeon and mentor died, surrounded by family, on September 6, 2017 at Massachusetts General Hospital, the institution he loved and served for 65 years. Like others of his generation, Dr Guralnick served in the Armed Services in Europe during World War II. Little was known of his activities with the 7

Charles Octavius Vidgen was the Superintendent of the Brisbane Dental Hospital, c1917-1945. Hitherto, commentators' reviews rely on imposing but narrow streams of evidence to either ignore Vidgen's influence on the dental profession or portray it as both peripheral and controversial. In this account, the authors use historical method to provide a revisionist account of Vidgen's professional profile and, to a lesser extent, a character resurrection. Vidgen was probably introverted. His orientation relating to dental education became obsolete, inappropriate and disruptive. Vidgen's actions, beliefs and values incurred sustained and organized opposition from academe, the Australian Dental Association Queensland Branch, the Odontological Society of Queensland and some private practitioners. The sociopolitical context, namely the Great Depression and affiliated reconstruction, the community's demand for government-administered dental services, World War II, twenty-five years of continuous Australian Labor Party government in Queensland, Edward Hanlon's authoritarianism and the emergence of a welfare state were also relevant to Vidgen's becoming a nonconformist, nonjoiner and an outcast. However, the authors posit that, for the socially disadvantaged and the regionally and remotely domiciled, Vidgen was a humanitarian and a quiet social reformer who, under Hanlon's authority and tutelage, pioneered enduring changes to the delivery of dental services across Queensland.

Being the first collaborator and assistant of Professor Gheorghe Bilaşcu, the founder of Cluj and National School of Dentistry, Dr. Gheorghe Bârlea kept very close to his master in developing the Dental Medicine in Cluj and in Romania, from 1908 to 1936.From the beginning of his career, he was involved in the establishment of the new Dental Clinic in the University of Superior Dacia as well as in the compilation of the teaching curriculum at the level of the avant-garde universities at that time. He was deeply involved in the recognition of Dentistry as discipline and medical practice and in the official achievement of the law and practice of this profession in Romania. Dr. Bârlea devoted his life and wotk to the cultural and social life of the Romanians, his efforts contributing to the Great Union of Romania.Passing away at an early age, Dr. Bârlea left Romanian dental profession without an important support.

Oral Medicine has been a specialty at the cross-roads of medicine and dentistry, not entirely recognized as a specialty by organized dentistry (at least in the US), and not embraced by medicine. This study makes a case for its place as a specialty of Medicine.

Together with John Tomes, J. S. Turner was a leading campaigner in the fight to advance dentistry from a trade to a profession. Through the Dental Reform Committee he promoted the establishment of a Dentists Register and then the British Dental Association. As first secretary of the BDA he guided it through its first days. He became president in 1891.

Over the past 100 y, tremendous progress has been made in the fields of dental tissue engineering and regenerative dental medicine, collectively known as translational dentistry. Translational dentistry has benefited from the more mature field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (TERM), established on the belief that biocompatible scaffolds, cells, and growth factors could be used to create functional, living replacement tissues and organs. TERM, created and pioneered by an interdisciplinary group of clinicians, biomedical engineers, and basic research scientists, works to create bioengineered replacement tissues that provide at least enough function for patients to survive until donor organs are available and, at best, fully functional replacement organs. Ultimately, the goal of both TERM and regenerative dentistry is to bring new and more effective therapies to the clinic to treat those in need. Very recently, the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research invested $24 million over a 3-y period to create dental oral and craniofacial translational resource centers to facilitate the development of more effective therapies to treat edentulism and other dental-related diseases over the next decade. This exciting era in regenerative dentistry, particularly for whole-tooth tissue engineering, builds on many key successes over the past 100 y that have contributed toward our current knowledge and understanding of signaling pathways directing natural tooth and dental tissue development—the foundation for current strategies to engineer functional, living replacement dental tissues and whole teeth. Here we use a historical perspective to present key findings and pivotal advances made in the field of translational dentistry over the past 100 y. We will first describe how this process has evolved over the past 100 y and then hypothesize on what to expect over the next century.

Better understanding of dental caries and other oral conditions has guided new strategies to prevent disease and manage its consequences at individual and public health levels. This article discusses advances in prevention and minimal intervention dentistry over the last century by focusing on some milestones within scientific, clinical, and public health arenas, mainly in cariology but also beyond, highlighting current understanding and evidence with future prospects. Dentistry was initially established as a surgical specialty. Dental caries (similar to periodontitis) was considered to be an infectious disease 100 years ago. Its ubiquitous presence and rampant nature—coupled with limited diagnostic tools and therapeutic treatment options—meant that these dental diseases were managed mainly by excising affected tissue. The understanding of the diseases and a change in their prevalence, extent, and severity, with evolutions in operative techniques, technologies, and materials, have enabled a shift from surgical to preventive and minimal intervention dentistry approaches. Future challenges to embrace include continuing the dental profession’s move toward a more patient-centered, evidence-based, less invasive management of these diseases, focused on promoting and maintaining oral health in partnership with patients. In parallel, public health needs to continue to, for example, tackle social inequalities in dental health, develop better preventive and management options for existing disease risk groups (e.g., the growing aging population), and the development of reimbursement and health outcome models that facilitate implementation of these evolving strategies. A century ago, almost every treatment involved injections, a drill or scalpel, or a pair of forceps. Today, dentists have more options than ever before available to them. These are supported by evidence, have a minimal intervention focus, and result in better outcomes for patients. The profession’s greatest challenge is moving this evidence into practice.

Over the last decades, it has been confirmed that computerized tomography (CT) is a valuable tool for studying mummies. In joint efforts put forth by the Mummy Research Project of the Hellenic Institute of Egyptology, the National Archaeological Museum, and the Athens Medical Center, a mummy was transported to the Radiology Department of the Athens Medical Center for study. Thus, a complete CT scanning was performed of this Ptolemaic mummy (AIG 3343: Sekhem, male, 150-30 BCE), belonging to the Egyptian Collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. The most significant finding is an interproximal carious cavity packed with protective material. This is the second case of dental packing in the literature among ancient Egyptian mummies studied to date. Its remarkable resemblance to the previously published study may indicate a common dental intervention performed by ancient Egyptians. Despite the well-known early medical traditions of ancient Egypt, spanning from the Old Kingdom to the Ptolemaic and Roman Periods, little evidence remains of their practices in dentistry. Our finding represents a rare perspective on the origins of what remains today a major allied health field discipline.

Amália Frisch was born in Edirne/Adrianople, Turkey, in 1882 to an immigrant Jewish family from Hungary. Following her graduation from the American College for Girls in Istanbul in 1901, she traveled to Switzerland for her medical education. Amália Frisch graduated from the school of medicine in Bern in 1907, and received her MD (Doctor universae medicinae) degree from the Zurich University in 1908. She specialised in gynaecology at the Vienna University Clincs, before returning to Istanbul. In the December of 1908, Dr. Amália Frisch was appointed intern to the Austro-Hungarian Hospital in Galata to attend the women's ward. During the Balkan Wars of 1912-13 the hospital housed the wounded of the Turkish Army in its Pancaldi premises, and Amália Frisch received medals of merit for her services both from the Habsburg Emperor Franz Josef and the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed Reschad V. Amália Frisch was an active member of the Ottoman Society for the Protection of Women's Rights (est. 1913). She was deported by the French occupation command in 1919 and returned to Budapest, after which she altered her profession to stomatology and dentistry. Amália Frisch passed away in Budapest during war, in 1941.

Gheorghe Bilaşcu came to Cluj from Budapest, where he enjoyed all the privileges reserved for the high-class people in the Hungarian capital city, in 1919. He renounced this comfortable existence in order to establish the Romanian Dental Education in Cluj. When he made this choice, he was aware that he would sacrifice his life for a national ideal. The following text describes the background and events that shaped the future of Romanian dentistry in Cluj, driven by the personality of Gheorghe Bilașcu.

Colombia is one of the Latin American countries in which both research and academic writing are considered virgin areas. The dental profession is not the exception. The purpose of this paper is to construct a database of the dental books written in Colombia from the mid-1800s to 1900s and to analyze those books according to the decades in which they were published. The first book published in Colombia on Dentistry was Odontotecnia u observaciones sobre la estructura, fisiología, anatomía y enfermedades de los dientes (Dental Techniques or Observations on the Structure, Physiology, Anatomy and Dental Diseases), written by American dentist Joseph Watson ver Valen and released in Bogotá in 1849. In 150 years, a total of 72 dental books were found, most of which were published in Bogotá and Medellin.

Victor Klemperer was a Professor of Romance Languages and Literature in Dresden during the 1920s and 1930s. He kept a diary and the entries for the period 1933 to 1945 have been examined for references relating to dentistry and dentists. These give an insight into an aspect of the social life of the period that appears to have been previously largely overlooked.

Richard III is known to have had a particular devotion to St Apollonia who is the Patron Saint of sufferers from toothache. The dentition in his skeleton exhumed from a car park in Leicester shows missing teeth which are thought to have been extracted due to caries. It is suggested that Richard, when he was Duke of Gloucester, had prayed to St Apollonia for the relief of toothache before submitting to undergo dental extractions.

Since their conception in the 1960s, dental implants have evolved into a predictable solution for replacing missing teeth. Many of these advances have come from an improved understanding of osseointegration and material sciences, most notably recognising the inherent biocompatibility of titanium. This has allowed researchers and clinicians to focus upon achieving better functional and aesthetic outcomes. This paper describes the evolution from the original concepts to current practice in dental implantology and considers some of the challenges to success facing clinicians and patients today.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, teething was believed to be common cause of death in infants. A contemporary publication (The Scots Magazine) gives the annual causes of death in Edinburgh and London between the years 1739-92. The figures reveal that there were more deaths from teething in Edinburgh than London, although the reasons for this were not explained. One possibility is that the mechanism of recording the deaths was not medically valid.

Two hundred years ago the occupational boundaries between different medical practitioners were blurred and unspecified, with many practicing in several fields. However the 1815 Apothecaries Act had a major impact on both the emerging pharmaceutical and dental professions. The 1878 and 1921 Dentists Acts enabled pharmacists who did some dentistry to continue practicing dentistry. Changes proposed by the British Dental Association (BDA) resulted in the formation of a Chemists Dental Association in 1910 to defend the interests of this group, which continued in existence until 1951. This paper explores the changing relationship between chemists and dentists from the early nineteenth century through to the early twenty-first century. Sources used include the published work of both dental and pharmaceutical historians, documentary sources, and quotations from oral history interviews.

Introduction The study of classic papers permits analysis of the past, present, and future of a specific area of knowledge. This type of analysis is becoming more frequent and more sophisticated. Our objective was to use the H-classics method, based on the h-index, to analyze classic papers in Implant Dentistry, Periodontics, and Oral Surgery (ID, P, and OS). Material and methods First, an electronic search of documents related to ID, P, and OS was conducted in journals indexed in Journal Citation Reports (JCR) 2014 within the category ‘Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine’. Second, Web of Knowledge databases were searched using Mesh terms related to ID, P, and OS. Finally, the H-classics method was applied to select the classic articles in these disciplines, collecting data on associated research areas, document type, country, institutions, and authors. Results Of 267,611 documents related to ID, P, and OS retrieved from JCR journals (2014), 248 were selected as H-classics. They were published in 35 journals between 1953 and 2009, most frequently in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology (18.95%), the Journal of Periodontology (18.54%), International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants (9.27%), and Clinical Oral Implant Research (6.04%). These classic articles derived from the USA in 49.59% of cases and from Europe in 47.58%, while the most frequent host institution was the University of Gothenburg (17.74%) and the most frequent authors were J. Lindhe (10.48%) and S. Socransky (8.06%). Conclusion The H-classics approach offers an objective method to identify core knowledge in clinical disciplines such as ID, P, and OS.

The birth of the Degree in Dentistry in Italy has been very troubled, and only in 1980 saw its effective implementation. Very "instructive" in this regard is the history on the establishment in 1924 (the period of the seizure of power by Fascism) of a "National School of Dentistry" at the University of Rome, which was withdrawn after only ten months. The biggest supporter and proponent of the School, Prof. Angelo Chiavaro, after a few years, was "punished" with the transfer from the University of Rome to that of Genoa. We present some brief notes on the biography of this courageous pioneer and the matter of which he was the protagonist.La nascita della Laurea in Odontoiatria in Italia è stata molto contrastata e solo nel 1980 ha visto la sua effettiva realizzazione. Molto ”istruttiva” al riguardo è la vicenda relativa all’istituzione nel 1924, periodo della presa di potere da parte del Fascismo, di una “Scuola Nazionale di Odontoiatria” presso l’Università di Roma, revocata appena dieci mesi dopo. Il maggiore sostenitore e propugnatore della Scuola, il prof. Angelo Chiavaro, venne dopo qualche anno “punito” con il trasferimento d’ufficio dall’Università di Roma a quella di Genova. The use of microscopes in dentistry has become quite popular since the late 1980s. However, its origin for dental applications can be traced to the early 20th century, when a microscope, invented by an American biologist named Greenough, working in the Zeiss Company, was adapted for use in dentistry. Initially it had been used in botany, metallurgy, and zoology, in addition to revolutionizing the study of coral and entomology.

This article was originally presented as the annual Orland lecture at the 65th American Academy of the History of Dentistry meeting in London, UK.

Francisco Martinez de Castrillo was a pioneer Spanish dental author who wrote and published Coloquio Breve y Compendioso Sobre la Materia de la Dentadura y Maravillosa Obra de la Boca, the first book published ever in the Spanish language. However, his life and work is largely unknown to the history of the dental profession.

This article illustrates three examples supporting the modern value of early writings in dentistry and medicine. First, by studying cases described in works published long before the era of genetic science, we are able to develop new hypotheses about familial conditions and their genetic roots. Tooth transposition is presented as an example. Second, old writings may lead us to valuable historical insights and perspectives in medicine that can be revealed only in retrospective analysis. An example of this kind of historical analysis uncovers why dentistry became unnaturally separated from mainstream medicine in the 19th century. Third, early writings become keys to unlocking forgotten knowledge that enriches our understanding of historically significant people and events. The discovery of Norman Kingsley's long forgotten pyrographic paintings after Rembrandt portraits is used as an example. Libraries, the traditional custodians of these valued old texts, must continue to be supported, and not undermined by the paperless digital revolution.

This series of papers will examine how the Anglo-American dental profession was established in the eighteenth century, examining its need for a name and identity, public recognition and official status. This paper outlines the evolution of the names of the profession, from tooth-drawer to dentist, and notes the importance of the name to the profession.

For centuries only three professions were recognised as such: medicine, law and theology. Now that the word 'professional' is applied to all occupations it can be difficult to understand the meaning of professionalism within dentistry and healthcare. We simply cannot treat dentistry as a commodity or business when it is a highly specialised personal service. Now more than ever, dentistry is a team game and all dental professionals must maintain the values and codes that distinguish what we do from most other vocations.
