The overall declining state of the western taxonomy is clearly documented by the present fate of the extremely high valued and huge unidentified caddisfly material collected in India and deposited in the Canadian National Collection. Due to the general lack of both financial and scientific resources in taxonomy, this huge collection remained almost untouched during the last 70 years after its collection. With a tribute to the collector, Fernand Schmid, the great caddisfly collector and taxonomist we have reconstructed his collecting activities of the five years in India by geolocalization and elaborated about ten percent of his undetermined Hydropsychidae in the Diplectroninae and Hydropsychinae subfamilies. Description of 145 new species from this small fragment of the huge unidentified collection demonstrates a pronounced underestimation of the biodiversity in general, routinely measured by gross phenomics. During this study we have reinstated the species status of seven taxa: Diplectrona kirimaduhela Schmid, 1958, stat. restit., Cheumatopsyche rienga Oláh & Johanson, 2008, stat. restit., Cheumatopsyche amurensis Martynov, 1934, stat. restit., Cheumatopsyche banksi Mosely, 1942, stat. restit., Cheumatopsyche processuata (Martynov, 1927), stat. restit., Potamyia klakahana (Ulmer, 1951), stat. restit., Potamyia proboscida Li & Tian, 1996, stat. restit., and raised the subspecies status to species rank of Diplectrona stigmatica Banks, 1937, stat. nov. Furthermore, we have established four new species groups, sixteen new species complexes and described 145 new species.

Recently, the fine-grained geolocalization of User-Generated Short Texts (UGST) has become increasingly important. One challenge is that UGST contains relatively little location-indicative information due to such limitations as text length. Therefore, extract and effectively use the location-indicative information is the key issue for improving the effect of geolocalization. The existing works only consider the global weight of the terms and do not distinguish between the importance of identical terms in different locations. In addition, the existing add-one smoothing masks the difference between the features of different locations. In this paper, we propose a fine-grained geolocalization method to predict the PoI-level location of UGSTs based on a weight probability model (FGST-WP). The method mainly includes three parts: 1) Using the reverse maximum match algorithm to filter out UGSTs that do not contain any location-indicative information. 2) Building coupling of terms and locations and adopting a mixed weight strategy to assign weights to terms. 3) Calculating the probability of nongeotagged UGST posted from each location and selecting k locations according to the top-k probabilities. The accuracy of FGST-WP on the three ground-truth datasets reaches 45%, 68%, and 72%, respectively. The results indicate the superior performance of FGST-WP.

Cross-view geolocalization matches the same target in different images from various views, such as views of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and satellites, which is a key technology for UAVs to autonomously locate and navigate without a positioning system (e.g., GPS and GNSS). The most challenging aspect in this area is the shifting of targets and nonuniform scales among different views. Published methods focus on extracting coarse features from parts of images, but neglect the relationship between different views, and the influence of scale and shifting. To bridge this gap, an effective network is proposed with well-designed structures, referred to as multiscale block attention (MSBA), based on a local pattern network. MSBA cuts images into several parts with different scales, among which self-attention is applied to make feature extraction more efficient. The features of different views are extracted by a multibranch structure, which was designed to make different branches learn from each other, leading to a more subtle relationship between views. The method was implemented with the newest UAV-based geolocalization dataset. Compared with the existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) method, MSBA accuracy improved by almost 10% when the inference time was equal to that of the SOTA method; when the accuracy of MSBA was the same as that of the SOTA method, inference time was shortened by 30%.

We address the problem of aerial image geolocalization over an area as large as a whole city through road network matching, which is modeled as a 2D point set registration problem under the 2D projective transformation and solved in a two-stage manner. In the first stage, all the potential transformations aligning the query road point set to the reference road point set are found by local point feature matching. A local geometric feature, called the Projective-Invariant Contour Feature (PICF), which consists of a road intersection and the closest points to it in each direction, is specifically designed. We prove that the proposed PICF is equivariant under the 2D projective transformation group. We then encode the PICF with a projective-invariant descriptor to enable the fast search of potential correspondences. The bad correspondences are then removed by a geometric consistency check with the graph-cut algorithm effectively. In the second stage, a flexible strategy is developed to recover the homography transformation with all the PICF correspondences with the Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) method or to recover the transformation with only one correspondence and then refine it with the local-to-global Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm when only a few correspondences exist. The strategy makes our method efficient to deal with both scenes where roads are sparse and scenes where roads are dense. The refined transformations are then verified with alignment accuracy to determine whether they are accepted as correct. Experimental results show that our method runs faster and greatly improves the recall compared with the state-of-the-art methods.

The geolocalization of aerial images is important for extracting geospatial information (e.g. the position of buildings, streets, and cars) and for creating maps. The standard is to use an expensive aerial imaging system equipped with an accurate GPS and IMU and/or do laborious ground control point measurements. In this paper we present a novel method to recognize the geolocation of aerial images automatically without any GPS or IMU. We extract road segments in the image sequence by detecting and tracking cars. We search in a database created from a road network map for the best matches between the road database and the extracted road segments. Geometric hashing is used to retrieve a shortlist of matches. The matches in the shortlist are ranked by a verification process. The highest scoring match gives the location and orientation of the images. We show in the experiments that our method can correctly geolocalize the aerial images in various scenes: e.g. urban, suburban, and rural with motorway. Besides the current images only the road map is needed over the search area. We can search an area of 22,500km2 containing 32,000km of streets within minutes on a single cpu. We utilize roads as appearance invariant features for geolocalization.Using the road map an image database over the search area is not needed.We present a geometric hashing method to match partial line segments to line structures.The search method does not need a complete road detector which detects relations between roads as a graph, e.g. intersections.Using car tracks as road segment detection is invariant to different light conditions, seasonal changes and scale.

The use of rational functions has become a standard for very high-resolution satellite imagery (VHRSI). On the other hand, the overall geolocalization accuracy via direct georeferencing from on board navigation components is much worse than image ground sampling distance (predicted < 3.5 m CE90 for WorldView-3, whereas GSD = 0.31 m for panchromatic images at nadir). This paper presents the georeferencing accuracy results obtained from a single WorldView-3 image processed with a bias compensated RPC camera model. Orientation results for an image collected over Milan are illustrated and discussed for both direct and indirect georeferencing strategies as well as different bias correction parameters estimated from a set of ground control points. Results highlight that the use of a correction based on two shift parameters is optimal for the considered dataset.

Educational games (aka serious games, SG) are powerful educational contents. However, they are costly to develop, and once developed, SGs become dependent on software and hardware combinations that may become obsolete, such as Adobe Flash or Java Applets. Addressing these problems would allow a much greater use of SGs in education. The eAdventure authoring tool, developed by the e-UCM research group, addressed high development costs, and resulted in the creation of multiple SGs in collaboration with different institutions. However, eAdventure’s Java Applets have become increasingly difficult to run due to platform obsolescence. To maintain the benefits of the eAdventure platform and user base, we have created new platform called uAdventure: an SG editor built on top of the game engine Unity that allows for the creation of educational adventure games without requiring programming. Since Unity is supported on a majority of platforms (including mobile). By developing SGs with uAdventure, the games become future-proof, as they can be updated and retargeted for new platforms as required. In this sense, uAdventure improves the lifecycle of SGs by reducing both authoring and maintenance costs.

Background: Geographical distribution of HIV variants is an important way to understand the circulation and spread of such viral strains. Objectives: To evaluate the spatial distribution of HIV-1 variants in patients failing antiretroviral therapy, in Salvador, Brazil. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional evaluation of HIV resistance test reports of patients who underwent genotyping tests in a referral center in Salvador, Brazil, for the years 2008–2014. The laboratory database contains around 2500 resistance reports of patients failing antiretroviral therapy. Genotypic tests were performed by sequencing of HIV-1 POL region (TrueGene, Siemens). We assessed HIV-1 resistance mutations and subtype, as well as residential address, age, and gender of patients. Results: We evaluated 1300 reports, 772 (59.4%) of them from male patients. As expected, subtype B predominated (79%) followed by subtypes F1 (6.7%) and BF (6.5%). The most frequent mutations in HIV-1 reverse transcriptase were 184V (79.1%), 41L (33.5%), 67N (30.4%), 103N (42.4%), and 108I (11.1%). Most frequent mutations in HIV-1 protease were 63P (52.4%), 36I (47.9%), 15 V (33.0%), 62 V (28.1%) and 13 V (25.8%). Some mutations (41L, 215Y, 210W) were significantly more frequent among men. We detected a significantly higher accumulation of 103N mutation in specific areas of Salvador. We identified a more restricted circulation pattern for subtype FB (more frequent in some regions), and F1 (almost absent in a specific region). Conclusion: Our results suggest that specific subtypes/resistance mutations present a distinct frequency rate in specific areas of Salvador, probably due to a restricted circulation pattern. This trend to clustering was observed in regions covered by AIDS referral centers, suggesting that pattern of care for such patients can interfere in virological outcomes. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and mobile devices are deeply influencing all facets of life, directly affecting the way people experience space and time. ICTs are also tools for supporting urban development, and they have also been adopted as equipment for furnishing public spaces. Hence, ICTs have created a new paradigm of hybrid space that can be defined as Senseable Spaces. Even if there are relevant cases where the adoption of ICT has made the use of public open spaces more “smart”, the interrelation and the recognition of added value need to be further developed. This is one of the motivations for the research presented in this paper. The main goal of the work reported here is the deployment of a system composed of three different connected elements (a real-world infrastructure, a data gathering system, and a data processing and analysis platform) for analysis of human behavior in the open space of Cardeto Park, in Ancona, Italy. For this purpose, and because of the complexity of this task, several actions have been carried out: the deployment of a complete real-world infrastructure in Cardeto Park, the implementation of an ad-hoc smartphone application for the gathering of participants’ data, and the development of a data pre-processing and analysis system for dealing with all the gathered data. A detailed description of these three aspects and the way in which they are connected to create a unique system is the main focus of this paper. In this paper, we introduce a european re- search pro ject, interactive media with personal networked devices (INTERMEDIA) in which we seek to progress beyond home and device-centric convergence toward truly user-centric convergence of multimedia. Our vision is The User as Multimedia Central: the user as the point at which multimedia services and the means for interact- ing with them converge. This paper proposes the main research goals so that users can be provided with a per- sonalized interface and content independently of physical networked devices, space and time. As a case study, we describe an indoors, mobile mixed reality guide system: Chloe@University. With a see-through head-mounted dis- play (HMD) connected to a small wearable computing device, Chloe@University provides users with an efficient way of guiding in a building. A 3D virtual character in front of the user guides him/her to the required destina- tion.

International audience; Camera pose estimation from an image has long been a very active research for Video/GIS registration. Different from traditional methods which are based on direct building feature matching, this paper presents an alternative method which uses an overall Skyline feature to determine the camera's orientation. Through our skyline matching method we find out a way to transform an image/model matching problem into a curve matching problem which significantly reduced the computation complexity and make it a possible solution for real-time applications. 1 Introduction

[EN] The evolution of mobile telephones have produced smart devices that not only allows the mobile user to talk but also to use a lot of telematic services. High quality photos and videos are produced by smart mobile telephones. The Global Positioning System available in the Mobile telephones allows the user to tag their photos and videos. There are several photo and integral video tagging mobile software but there is not a mobile application that allows the mobile users to tag the full video frames. This full tagging process allows the mobile user to tag independent video frames in order to explode the photo-video properties of the integral video. In this paper we present a mobile application and a Server application that allow the mobile user to full tag the mobile videos and share them with other users (registered in the Server). We present some tradeoffs present in the design of the tagging process

International audience; This paper investigates issues related to the use of mobile social applications which aim at supporting coordination and communication, and enhancing the feeling of connectedness and social presence. To explore these assumptions, we conducted an empirical study of an application that enables group of users to share awareness information about their status and location. We present the results of the study, focusing on three issues: patterns of usage of awareness information, evolution of the usage, and privacy.; Les applications sociales mobiles se réfèrent à des services qui permettent à un groupe de partager des informations contextuelles concernant leur localisation ou leurs activités sur des téléphones mobiles. Ces applications sont souvent présentées comme des outils qui vont faciliter la coordination de la communication, accroître la « présence sociale », et entretenir voire renforcer le maintien des liens sociaux. Pour explorer ces hypothèses, nous avons développé puis étudié les usages d'une application qui permet à plusieurs individus de se rendre mutuellement visibles leurs activités respectives. Dans les résultats présentés ici, trois aspects seront abordés : les différentes formes d'utilisation de l'application, l'évolution des usages de celle-ci, les problèmes soulevés du point de vue des conséquences sur la vie privée (privacy).

In this article it has been presented a method of rough estimation of geographical coordinates of villages and cities, which has been described in XIX century geographical encyclopedia entitled: "The Geographical dictionary of Polish Kingdom and other slavic countries". It has been described functioning of the algorithm for estimating location, the toolbox used to acquire and process necessary information, as well as context of this research.

El novembre de l’any 2016 es va posar en funcionament el portal ‘GeoCommons: la UPC en el territori’ (http://geocommons.upc.edu), amb l’objectiu de poder mostrar l’activitat i l’impacte que la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) té en el territori, a partir de la geolocalització dels documents publicats al dipòsit institucional ‘UPCommons. Portal del coneixement obert de la UPC’. Pel desenvolupament del projecte es va formar un grup de treball format per bibliotecaris de diferents biblioteques de la UPC i informàtics, que en van definir els requeriments, model de metadades, prototipatge i mecanismes de gestió i actualització de la plataforma. Un dels aspectes que més es van tenir en compte va ser la sostenibilitat i viabilitat del projecte. Es varen desenvolupar eines específiques de suport al procés de geolocalització de documents o d’identificació de les organitzacions col·laboradores, per tal de reduir-ne els costos de gestió i actualització. El resultat ha estat un web que permet veure en un mapa del món quina ha estat la producció acadèmica de la UPC que fa referència a una zona concreta del món, mostrant les dades bibliogràfiques bàsiques del document i enllaçant-lo també al dipòsit institucional per poder-ne consultar el contingut. Com a valor afegit es pot visualitzar també amb quines organitzacions (empreses, universitats, centres de recerca, ....) s’han realitzat els treballs dipositats a UPCommons. La bona acollida de la plataforma fa que a dia d’avui s’estiguin implementant millores, com la personalització de mapes per il·lustrar pàgines web o el desenvolupament de projectes de caràcter interuniversitari. The GeoCommons portal (http://geocommons.upc.edu) was launched in November 2016 to show the activity and impact of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) across the world by geolocating documents published in the UPCommons institutional repository. A work group composed of librarians from UPC libraries and computer scientists was set up to establish the requirements and to develop the metadata model and prototypes for the portal. As sustainability and feasibility were priority objectives, specific tools were developed to geolocate documents and identify collaborating organisations, thereby reducing the costs of managing and updating the platform. The result is a website showing the academic output of the UPC on a world map that gives documents’ basic bibliographic data and a link to the full text in UPCommons. The organisations (companies, universities, research centres, etc.) with which the works deposited in UPCommons have been carried out can also be viewed. Because the platform has been well received, improvements such as the customisation of maps to illustrate web pages and the development of interuniversity projects have been implemented.
