J.; Xu, Dong.--This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), which permits unrestricted reuse, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited., We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the afterglow of GRB 221009A, the brightest gamma-ray burst (GRB) ever observed. This includes the first mid-IR spectra of any GRB, obtained with JWST/Near Infrared Spectrograph (0.6–5.5 micron) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (5–12 micron), 12 days after the burst. Assuming that the intrinsic spectral slope is a single power law, with Fν ∝ ν−β, we obtain β ≈ 0.35, modified by substantial dust extinction with AV = 4.9. This suggests extinction above the notional Galactic value, possibly due to patchy extinction within the Milky Way or dust in the GRB host galaxy. It further implies that the X-ray and optical/IR regimes are not on the same segment of the synchrotron spectrum of the afterglow. If the cooling break lies between the X-ray and optical/IR, then the temporal decay rates would only match a post-jet-break model, with electron index p < 2, and with the jet expanding into a uniform ISM medium. The shape of the JWST spectrum is near-identical in the optical/near-IR to X-SHOOTER spectroscopy obtained at 0.5 days and to later time observations with HST. The lack of spectral evolution suggests that any accompanying supernova (SN) is either substantially fainter or bluer than SN 1998bw, the proto-type GRB-SN. Our HST observations also reveal a disk-like host galaxy, viewed close to edge-on, that further complicates the isolation of any SN component. The host galaxy appears rather typical among long-GRB hosts and suggests that the extreme properties of GRB 221009A are not directly tied to its galaxy-scale environment. © 2023. The Author(s). The NOT has a long tradition in the follow-up of gamma-ray bursts, starting with observations of the very first afterglow back in 1997. Focus has been both on the physics of these events and their use as probes of the distant universe. Twenty-five years later, the NOT has become a major worldwide contributor to this field. Starting in 2017, the parallel branch of gravitational wave sources electromagnetic follow-up has also sprouted. This presentation reviews past seminal NOT contributions and highlights new science goals which can be tackled using the forthcoming NTE, whose design has been optimized for transient sources.

GRB 221009A is the brightest Gamma-Ray Burst detected in more than 50 yearsof study. Here, we present observations in the X-ray and optical domainsranging from the prompt emission (optical coverage by all-sky cameras) up to 20days after the GRB obtained by the GRANDMA Collaboration (which includesobservations from more than 30 professional and amateur telescopes) and the\textit{Insight}-HXMT Collaboration operating the X-ray telescope HXMT-LE. Westudy the optical afterglow both with empirical fitting procedures andnumerical modeling. We find that the GRB afterglow, extinguished by a largedust column, is most likely behind a combination of a large Milky-Way dustcolumn combined with moderate low-metallicity dust in the host galaxy. We findthat numerical models describing the synchrotron radiation at the forward shockof a relativistic top-hat jet propagating through a constant density mediumrequire extreme parameters to fit the observational data. Based on theseobservations, we constrain the isotropic afterglow energy $E_{0} \sim 3.7\times 10^{54}$ erg, the density of the ambient medium $n_{\mathrm{ism}}\gtrsim 1~\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$ and the opening angle of the jet core to be$\gtrsim10.7^\circ$. We do not find evidence (for or against) of jet structure,a potential jet break and the presence or absence of a SN. Placed in the globalcontext of GRB optical afterglows, we find the afterglow of GRB 221009A isluminous but not extraordinarily so, highlighting that some aspects of this GRBdo not deviate from the known sample despite its extreme energetics and thepeculiar afterglow evolution.

Although it is common to divide the two populations at a gamma-ray duration of 2 s, classification based on duration does not always map to the progenitor. Notably, GRBs with short (≲2 s) spikes of prompt gamma-ray emission followed by prolonged, spectrally softer extended emission (EE-SGRBs) have been suggested to arise from compact object mergers6,7,8. Compact object mergers are of great astrophysical importance as the only confirmed site of rapid neutron capture (r-process) nucleosynthesis, observed in the form of so-called kilonovae9,10,11,12,13,14. Here we report the discovery of a possible kilonova associated with the nearby (350 Mpc), minute-duration GRB 211211A. The kilonova implies that the progenitor is a compact object merger, suggesting that GRBs with long, complex light curves can be spawned from merger events. The kilonova of GRB 211211A has a similar luminosity, duration and colour to that which accompanied the gravitational wave (GW)-detected binary neutron star (BNS) merger GW170817 (ref. 4). Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are bursts of electromagnetic energy released when supermassive black holes at the center of galaxies violently disrupt stars that pass too close. TDEs provide a new window to study accretion onto supermassive black holes; in some cases, this accretion leads to launching of a relativistic jet, but the necessary conditions are not fully understood. Here, we report the optical discovery of AT2022cmc, a rapidly fading source located at redshift z=1.19325. Observations of a bright counterpart at other wavelengths, including X-rays, sub-millimeter, and radio, supports the interpretation of AT2022cmc as a jetted TDE containing a synchrotron ``afterglow.'' Using 4 years of Zwicky Transient Facility survey data, we calculated a rate of 0.02 ^{+ 0.04 }_{- 0.01 } Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} for jetted TDEs based on the luminous, fast-fading red component, thus providing a measurement complementary to the rates derived from X--ray and radio observations (Brown et al., 2015), confirming that ~1% of TDEs have on-axis jets. Forthcoming observations of AT2022cmc could resolve the jet through high-resolution imaging, while optical surveys have the potential to unveil a population of cosmological flares of the AT2022cmc class.

ASASSN-15lh is the intrinsically brightest transient observed to date. Despite being the subject of concerted photometric and spectroscopic observing campaigns, there is still significant debate about the true nature of this transient and the mechanism responsible for its great luminosity. Here we report five epochs of imaging polarimetry and two epochs of spectropolarimetry conducted with the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph (FORS) polarimeter, spanning +28-91 d (rest frame) with respect to the light-curve maximum. The overall level of polarization across this period is seen to be low similar to 0.5-0.8 per cent, however at +51.6 d, approximately corresponding to a dip in the ultraviolet (UV) photometric light curve, the polarization is seen to briefly rise to 1.2 per cent in the observed V band. We discuss this behaviour in the context of previous polarimetric observations of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) and tidal disruption events (TDEs). F.; Vernet, D.; Vidadi, Z.; Zhu, J.; Zhu, Y., GRANDMA is a world-wide collaboration with the primary scientific goal of studying gravitational-wave sources, discovering their electromagnetic counterparts and characterizing their emission. GRANDMA involves astronomers, astrophysicists, gravitational-wave physicists, and theorists. GRANDMA is now a truly global network of telescopes, with (so far) 30 telescopes in both hemispheres. It incorporates a citizen science programme (Kilonova-Catcher) which constitutes an opportunity to spread the interest in time-domain astronomy. The telescope network is an heterogeneous set of already-existing observing facilities that operate coordinated as a single observatory. Within the network there are wide-field imagers that can observe large areas of the sky to search for optical counterparts, narrow-field instruments that do targeted searches within a predefined list of host-galaxy candidates, and larger telescopes that are devoted to characterization and follow-up of the identified counterparts. Here we present an overview of GRANDMA after the third observing run of the LIGO/VIRGO gravitational-wave observatories in 2019-2020 and its ongoing preparation for the forthcoming fourth observational campaign (O4). Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous transients in the universe and are utilized as probes of early stars, gravitational wave counterparts, and collisionless shock physics. In spite of studies on polarimetry of GRBs in individual wavelengths that characterized intriguing properties of prompt emission and afterglow, no coordinated multi-wavelength measurements have yet been performed. Here, we report the first coordinated simultaneous polarimetry in the optical and radio bands for the afterglow associated with the typical long GRB 191221B. Our observations successfully caught the radio emission, which is not affected by synchrotron self-absorption, and show that the emission is depolarized in the radio band compared to the optical one. Our simultaneous polarization angle measurement and temporal polarization monitoring indicate the existence of cool electrons that increase the estimate of jet kinetic energy by a factor of $>$ 4 for this GRB afterglow. Further coordinated multi-wavelength polarimetric campaigns would improve our understanding of the total jet energies and magnetic field configurations in the emission regions of various types of GRBs, which are required to comprehend the mass scales of their progenitor systems and the physics of collisionless shocks., Author's version. 41 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables

EIFIS (Extreme Integral FIeld Spectrograph) is a modular integral field spectrograph, based on image slicers, and makes use of new, large format detectors. The concept is thought to cover the largest possible field of view while producing spectroscopy over the complete optical range (3 000 - 10 000 \r{A}) at a medium resolving power of about 2400. In the optimal concept, each module covers a field of view of 38" x 38" with 0.3" spaxels, which is fed into a double spectrograph with common collimator optics. The blue arm covers the spectral range between 3000 and 5600 \r{A} and the red arm between 5400 and 10100 \r{A}, allowing for an overlap range. The spectra are imaged onto 9.2k x 9.2k detectors using a double pseudoslit. The proposed design for the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias uses a total of 6 such modules to cover a total of 2.43 square arcminutes. Here we will present the conceptual design of the instrument and a feasibility study of the optical and mechanical design of the spectrographs. Optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of the afterglows of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) provides a powerful diagnostic tool to probe the interstellar medium (ISM) of their host galaxies and foreground absorbers, even up to the highest redshifts. We analyze the VLT/X-shooter afterglow spectrum of GRB 210905A, triggered by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, and detect neutral hydrogen, low-ionization, high-ionization, and fine-structure absorption lines from a complex system at z = 6.3118, which we associate with the GRB host galaxy. We use them to study the ISM properties of the host system, revealing the metallicity, kinematics, and chemical abundance pattern of its gas along the GRB line of sight. We also detect absorption lines from at least two foreground absorbers at z = 5.7390 and z = 2.8296. The total metallicity of the z ∼ 6.3 system is [M/H]tot = −1.72 ± 0.13, after correcting for dust depletion and taking α-element enhancement into account, as suggested by our analysis. This is consistent with the values found for the other two GRBs at z ∼ 6 with spectroscopic data showing metal absorption lines (GRB 050904 and GRB 130606A), and it is at the higher end of the metallicity distribution of quasar damped Lyman-α systems (QSO-DLAs) extrapolated to such a high redshift. In addition, we determine the overall amount of dust and dust-to-metal mass ratio (DTM) ([Zn/Fe]fit = 0.33 ± 0.09 and DTM = 0.18 ± 0.03). We find indications of nucleosynthesis due to massive stars and, for some of the components of the gas clouds, we find evidence of peculiar nucleosynthesis, with an overabundance of aluminum (as also found for GRB 130606A). From the analysis of fine-structure lines, we determine distances of several kiloparsecs for the low-ionization gas clouds closest to the GRB. Those are farther distances than usually found for GRB host absorption systems, possibly due to the very high number of ionizing photons produced by the GRB that could ionize the line of sight up to several hundreds of parsecs. Using the HST/F140W image of the GRB field, we show the GRB host galaxy (with a possible afterglow contamination) as well as multiple objects within 2″ from the GRB position. We discuss the galaxy structure and kinematics that could explain our observations, also taking into account a tentative detection of Lyman-α emission at z = 6.3449 (∼1200 km s−1 from the GRB redshift in velocity space), and the observational properties of Lyman-α emitters at very high redshift. This study shows the amazing potential of GRBs to access detailed information on the properties (metal enrichment, gas kinematic, dust content, nucleosynthesis...) of very high-redshift galaxies, independently of the galaxy luminosity. Deep spectroscopic observations with VLT/MUSE and JWST will offer the unique possibility of combining the information presented in this paper with the properties of the ionized gas, with the goal of better understanding how galaxies in the reionization era form and evolve. © The Authors 2023., This work was supported by CNES. C.; Stella, L.; Tagliaferri, G.; Tanvir, N.; Watson, D., We observed GRB 190114C (redshift z = 0.4245), the first gamma-ray burst (GRB) ever detected at TeV energies, at optical and near-infrared wavelengths with several ground-based telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope, with the primary goal of studying its underlying supernova, SN 2019jrj. The monitoring spanned the time interval between 1.3 and 370 days after the burst, in the observer frame. We find that the afterglow emission can be modelled with a forward shock propagating in a uniform medium modified by time-variable extinction along the line of sight. A jet break could be present after 7 rest-frame days, and accordingly the maximum luminosity of the underlying supernova (SN) ranges between that of stripped-envelope core-collapse SNe of intermediate luminosity and that of the luminous GRB-associated SN 2013dx. The observed spectral absorption lines of SN 2019jrj are not as broad as in classical GRB SNe and are instead more similar to those of less-luminous core-collapse SNe. Taking the broad-lined stripped-envelope core-collapse SN 2004aw as an analogue, we tentatively derive the basic physical properties of SN 2019jrj. We discuss the possibility that a fraction of the TeV emission of this source might have had a hadronic origin and estimate the expected high-energy neutrino detection level with IceCube. © ESO 2022., A. We present the Global Rapid Advanced Network Devoted to the Multi-messenger Addicts (GRANDMA). The network consists of 21 telescopes with both photometric and spectroscopic facilities. They are connected together thanks to a dedicated infrastructure. The network aims at coordinating the observations of large sky position estimates of transient events to enhance their follow-up and reduce the delay between the initial detection and optical confirmation. The GRANDMA programme mainly focuses on follow-up of gravitational-wave alerts to find and characterize the electromagnetic counterpart during the third observational campaign of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. But it allows for follow-up of any transient alerts involving neutrinos or gamma-ray bursts, even those with poor spatial localization. We present the different facilities, tools, and methods we developed for this network and show its efficiency using observations of LIGO/Virgo S190425z, a binary neutron star merger candidate.We furthermore report on allGRANDMAfollow-up observations performed during the first six months of the LIGO-Virgo observational campaign, and we derive constraints on the kilonova properties assuming that the events' locations were imaged by our telescopes. © 2019 The Author(s)., Parts of this research were conducted by the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav), through project number CE170100004. In this study we define a new sample of distant powerful radio galaxies in order to study their host-galaxy properties and provide targets for future observations of HI absorption with new radio telescopes and to understand the fuelling and feedback from such sources. We have cross-matched the Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS) radio catalogue at 843 MHz with the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) near-infrared catalogue using the Likelihood Ratio technique. Photometric redshifts from the Dark Energy Survey are then used to assign redshifts to the radio source counterparts. We found a total of 249 radio sources with photometric redshifts over a 148 deg^2 region. By fitting the optical and near-infrared photometry with spectral synthesis models we determine the stellar mass and star-formation rates of the radio sources, finding typical stellar masses of 10^{11} - 10^{12}M$_{\odot}$ for the powerful high-redshift radio galaxies. We also find a population of low-mass blue galaxies. However, by comparing the derived star-formation rates to the radio luminosity, we suggest that these sources are false positives in our likelihood ratio analysis. D.; García-Alvarez, D., HiPERCAM is a portable, quintuple-beam optical imager that saw first light on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) in 2018. The instrument uses re-imaging optics and four dichroic beamsplitters to record us, gs, rs, is, zs (320-1060 nm) images simultaneously on its five CCD cameras, each of 3.1-arcmin (diagonal) field of view. The detectors in HiPERCAM are frame-transfer devices cooled thermo-electrically to 183 K, thereby allowing both long-exposure, deep imaging of faint targets, as well as high-speed (over 1000 windowed frames per second) imaging of rapidly varying targets. A comparison-star pick-off system in the telescope focal plane increases the effective field of view to 6.7 arcmin for differential photometry. Combining HiPERCAM with the world's largest optical telescope enables the detection of astronomical sources to gs ∼23 in 1 s and gs ∼28 in 1 h. We report on multi-band observations of the transient source Swift J0840.7-3516, which was detected in outburst in 2020 February by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. The outburst episode lasted just ∼5 days, during which the X-ray luminosity quickly decreased from LX ≈ 3 × 1037 d102 erg s-1 at peak down to LX ≈ 5 × 1033 d102 erg s-1 in quiescence (0.3-10 keV; d10 is the distance to the source in units of 10 kpc). Such x display--inline-block" style="background: var(--highlight-yellow); color: inherit;">a marked and rapid decrease in the flux was also registered at UV and optical wavelengths. In outburst, the source showed considerable aperiodic variability in the X-rays on timescales as short as x display--inline-block" style="background: var(--highlight-yellow); color: inherit;">a few seconds. The spectrum of the source in the energy range 0.3-20 keV was well described by x display--inline-block" style="background: var(--highlight-yellow); color: inherit;">a thermal, blackbody-like, component plus x display--inline-block" style="background: var(--highlight-yellow); color: inherit;">a non-thermal, power law-like, component and it softened considerably as the source returned to quiescence. The spectrum of the optical counterpart in quiescence showed broad emission features mainly associated with ionised carbon and oxygen, superposed on x display--inline-block" style="background: var(--highlight-yellow); color: inherit;">a blue continuum. No evidence for bright continuum radio emission was found in quiescence. GATOS (GTC Astrophysical Transient Octuple-channel imaging Spectrograph) is a multi-channel imager and spectrograph capable of simultaneously obtaining images of the same field in 8 optical and near-infrared bands or alternatively performing spectroscopy covering the range between 3500 and 23500 Angstrom in a single shot at a resolving power of R ∼ 4000. State-of-the-art detectors envisioned for this instrument will have negligible readout times and be able to perform high-time-resolution observations. An integral-field mode covering the same range simultaneously will be a crucial element of the design. In its current design, the integral-field unit covers a field of 12" × 8" with 0.6" slitlets. Finally, we aim to include a unique spectropolarimetry unit that will give GTC the first broad-band spectropolarimeter on a 10 m class telescope. The design is an evolution of the OCTOCAM concept that was selected to be built at Gemini, and is now known as SCORPIO.

H., GRANDMA (Global Rapid Advanced Network Devoted to the Multi-messenger Addicts) is a network of 25 telescopes of different sizes, including both photometric and spectroscopic facilities. The network aims to coordinate follow-up observations of gravitational-wave (GW) candidate alerts, especially those with large localization uncertainties, to reduce the delay between the initial detection and the optical confirmation. In this paper, we detail GRANDMA's observational performance during Advanced LIGO/Advanced Virgo Observing Run 3 (O3), focusing on the second part of O3; this includes summary statistics pertaining to coverage and possible astrophysical origin of the candidates. To do so, we quantify our observation efficiency in terms of delay between GW candidate trigger time, observations, and the total coverage. Using an optimized and robust coordination system, GRANDMA followed-up about 90 per cent of the GW candidate alerts, that is 49 out of 56 candidates. This led to coverage of over 9000 deg2 during O3. The delay between the GW candidate trigger and the first observation was below 1.5 h for 50 per cent of the alerts. We did not detect any electromagnetic counterparts to the GW candidates during O3, likely due to the very large localization areas (on average thousands of degrees squares) and relatively large distance of the candidates (above 200 Mpc for 60 per cent of binary neutron star, BNS candidates). Context. Galaxies that hosted many core-collapse supernova (SN) explosions can be used to study the conditions necessary for the formation of massive stars. NGC 2770 was dubbed an SN factory because it hosted four core-collapse SNe in 20 years (three type Ib and one type IIn). Its star formation rate (SFR) was reported to not be enhanced and, therefore, not compatible with such a high SN rate. Aims. We aim to explain the high SN rate of NGC 2770. Methods. We used archival HI line data for NGC 2770 and reinterpreted the Hα and optical continuum data. Results. Even though the continuum-based SFR indicators do not yield high values, the dust-corrected Hα luminosity implies a high SFR, consistent with the high SN rate. Such a disparity between the SFR estimators is an indication of recently enhanced star formation activity because the continuum indicators trace long timescales of the order of 100 Myr, unlike the line indicators, which trace timescales of the order of 10 Myr. Hence, the unique feature of NGC 2770 compared to other galaxies is the fact that it was observed very shortly after the enhancement of the SFR. It also has high dust extinction, E(B - V) above 1 mag. We provide support for the hypothesis that the increased SFR in NGC 2770 is due to the interaction with its companion galaxies. We report an HI bridge between NGC 2770 and its closest companion and the existence of a total of four companions within 100 kpc (one identified for the first time). There are no clear HI concentrations close to the positions of SNe in NGC 2770 such as those detected for hosts of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and broad-lined SNe type Ic (IcBL). We present post-jet-break Hubble Space Telescope, Very Large Array, and Chandra observations of the afterglow of the long gamma-ray bursts GRB 160625B (between 69 and 209 days) and GRB 160509A (between 35 and 80 days). We calculate the post-jet-break decline rates of the light curves and find the afterglow of GRB 160625B is inconsistent with a simple t(-3/4) steepening over the break, expected from the geometric effect of the jet edge entering our line of sight. However, the favored optical post-break decline is also inconsistent with the f(nu) proportional to t(-p) decline (where p 2.3 from the pre-break light curve), which is expected from exponential lateral expansion of the jet; perhaps suggesting lateral expansion that only affects a fraction of the jet. The post-break decline of GRB 160509A is consistent with both the t(-3/4) steepening and with f(nu) proportional to t(-p). We also use boxfit to fit afterglow models to both light curves and find both to be energetically consistent with a millisecond magnetar central engine, but the magnetar parameters need to be extreme (i.e., E similar to 3 x 10(52) erg). Finally, the late-time radio light curves of both afterglows are not reproduced well by boxfit and are inconsistent with predictions from the standard jet model; instead, both are well represented by a single power-law decline (roughly f(nu) proportional to t(-1)) with no breaks. This requires a highly chromatic jet break and possibly a two-component jet for both bursts.© 2020. The American Astronomical Society. Wide-angle surveys at different wavelengths are already providing triggers for very different kinds of transients. The most interesting science is produced when new sources are followed-up and characterised by using the right instrumentation, telescopes and observing strategies. In the coming years, with new large-scale surveys such as ZTF and LSST, the amount of triggers is expected to scale up massively. Furthermore, new observational windows, such as gravitational waves or neutrinos, are now opening and adding complexity to the picture. The instrumentation and strategies that we have been using over recent years may just not be appropriate for those new situations. In this Workshop we discussed the present and projected future of transient discovery, the instrumentation that will be needed for the follow-up of those targets, and the observing strategies, data analysis and community efforts that will be required to tackle the challenges that lie ahead of us.

Octocam is an 8-channel VIS and NIR imager and spectrograph to be installed at Gemini South in 2022. It provides simultaneous imaging in g’,r’,i’,z,Y,J,H,KS bands or simultaneous spectroscopy at a resolution of ∼4000, together with high time-resolution options. Additional capabilities such as spectropolarimetry or an Integral Field Unit could be added as an upgrade later. These properties makes it very well suited as a follow-up instrument for transient searches. It is planned as a dedicated follow-up instrument for LSST, and will start operations at the same time as the LSST main survey. Octocam was conceived as a consortium consisting of South-West Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, IAA-CSIC in Granada, FRACTAL SLNE in Madrid, and George Washington University.

In their final stages, massive stars can show large eruptions which can resemble core-collapse IIn SNe. Here we present SN 2015bh in NGC 2770, a IIn/impostor, where archival data show variabilities for at least 21 years before the main event in 2015. Serendipitous spectra during an outburst are the only SN progenitor spectra available since SN 1987A and show an LBV with a fast, dense outflow. Analogues to SN 2015bh are SN 2009ip and SNhunt 248 while the SN 2000ch impostor could be equivalent to the outburst phase of SN 2015bh. It is currently unclear whether SN 2015bh (and SN 2009ip) were final core-collapse events. Alternatively, they might be large outbursts shedding the outer envelope and creating a Wolf-Rayet star in only a matter of decades. Future large-scale high-cadence surveys such as LSST will detect many more of these events and allow us a unique insight into the largely unknown late stages of massive stellar evolution.

Observing the supernovae (SNe) associated to the different types of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is one of the few means to study their progenitors. In the past years, it has become clear that GRB-like events are more heterogeneous than previously thought. There is a marked difference between long GRBs, which are produced by the collapse of very massive stars and are normally associated with broad-lined type Ic SNe, and short bursts, which occur when two compact objects merge and that, at least in some cases, can produce an associated kilonova. Moreover, the SNe associated with different sub-types of long GRBs are also seen to differ, especially those associated with ultra-long duration GRBs. To address this issue in a systematic way we started an observing programme in 2010 at the 10.4m GTC telescope. Here we present some results of our programme, including the detection of 12 new GRB-SNe. Highlights of our sample are the discovery of the first spectroscopic SN associated with a highly energetic (Eγ, iso ~ 1054 erg) “cosmological” burst (GRB 130427A), the study of the SN associated with a shock-breakout GRB (GRB 140606B) and the SN associated with the peculiar ultra-long GRB 101225A at z = 0.85. The sample includes also the follow-up of several short GRBs in search for kilonovae emission (GRB 130603B and GRB 160821B are important examples). Amongst our latest results we present the photometric and spectroscopic observations of the SNe associated with GRB 150818A and GRB 161219B.

Massive stars in the final phases of their lives frequently expel large amounts of material. An interesting example is SN 2009ip that varied in brightness years before its possible core-collapse. Here we present SN 2015bh in NGC 2770 that shows striking similarities to SN 2009ip. It experienced frequent variabilities for 21 years before a smaller precursor and the “main event” in May 2015. Its spectra are consistent with an LBV during the outburst phase and show a complex P-Cygni profile during the main event. Both SN 2009ip and 2015bh were always situated red-wards of LBVs in outburst in the HR diagram. Their final fate is currently still uncertain, SN 2009ip, however, is now fainter than in pre-explosion observations. If the star survives this event it is undoubtedly altered, and we suggest that these “zombie stars” could be LBVs evolving into a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star over a very short timescale.

The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) is imaging similar to 9300 deg(2) of the celestial sphere in 12 optical bands using a dedicated 0.8mrobotic telescope, the T80-South, at the Cerro Tololo Inter-american Observatory, Chile. The telescope is equipped with a 9.2k x 9.2k e2v detector with 10 mu m pixels, resulting in a field of view of 2 deg(2) with a plate scale of 0.55 arcsec pixel-1. The survey consists of four main subfields, which include two non-contiguous fields at high Galactic latitudes (vertical bar b vertical bar > 30 degrees, 8000 deg(2)) and two areas of the Galactic Disc and Bulge (for an additional 1300 deg(2)). S-PLUS uses the Javalambre 12-band magnitude system, which includes the 5 ugriz broad-band filters and 7 narrow-band filters centred on prominent stellar spectral features: the Balmer jump/[OII], Ca H + K, Hd, G band, Mg b triplet, H alpha, and the Ca triplet. S-PLUS delivers accurate photometric redshifts (dz /(1 + z) = 0.02 or better) for galaxies with r < 19.7 AB mag and z < 0.4, thus producing a 3D map of the local Universe over a volume of more than 1 (Gpc/h)(3). The final S-PLUS catalogue will also enable the study of star formation and stellar populations in and around the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, as well as searches for quasars, variable sources, and low-metallicity stars. In this paper we introduce the main characteristics of the survey, illustrated with science verification data highlighting the unique capabilities of S-PLUS. The number of supernovae known to be connected with long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is increasing and the link between these events is no longer exclusively found at low redshift (z less than or similar to 0.3) but is well established also at larger distances. We present a new case of such a liaison at z = 0.33 between GRB171010A and SN 2017htp. It is the second closest GRB with an associated supernova of only three events detected by Fermi-LAT. The supernova is one of the few higher redshift cases where spectroscopic observations were possible and shows spectral similarities with the well-studied SN 1998bw, having produced a similar Ni mass (M-Ni = 0.33 +/- 0.02 M-circle dot) with slightly lower ejected mass (M-ej = 4.1 +/- 0.7 M-circle dot) and kinetic energy (E-K = 8.1 +/- 2.5 x 10(51) erg). The host-galaxy is bigger in size than typical GRB host galaxies, but the analysis of the region hosting the GRB revealed spectral properties typically observed in GRB hosts and showed that the progenitor of this event was located in a very bright H II region of its face-on host galaxy, at a projected distance of similar to 10 kpc from its galactic centre. In: Dwarf galaxies: from the deep universe to the present; edited by:McQuinn, KBW; Stierwalt, S.; ISBN:978-1-108-47161-9.--Conference: 344th Symposium of the International-Astronomical-Union (IAU), Vienna, Austria, Aug 20-24, 2018., Dwarf irregular galaxies are places of ongoing star-formation in the low-redshift Universe. Low metallicity dwarfs were originally thought to be the youngest galaxies in the local Universe, however, there is now evidence that they consist of matter which has previously undergone evolution and is enriched by star-formation. Here we present a sample of seven nearby metal-poor dwarf galaxies with a young stellar populations selected from the SDSS which we study using integral field unit (IFU) data from the VIMOS instrument, covering the spectral range between the He II 4686 line and the [SII] 6718/6733 angstrom doublet. We present property maps across the galaxies and compare different galaxies and different HII regions within the same galaxy. We find that the properties within one galaxy are not uniform and they also differ between different galaxies concerning star-formation, kinematics and metallicity and morphology. The observed differences across individual galaxies together with disturbed kinematics and morphologies can be interpreted as possible signs of recent interactions and/or mergers. Additionally, we present a comparison of different metallicity calibrations and search for systematic differences obtained using different methods.

Whether stars could have driven the reionization of the intergalactic medium depends critically on the proportion of ionizing radiation that escapes the galaxies in which it is produced. Spectroscopy of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows can be used to estimate the opacity to extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation along the lines-of-sight to the bursts. Assuming that long-duration GRBs trace the locations of the massive stars dominating EUV production, the average escape fraction of ionizing radiation can be calculated independently of galaxy size or luminosity. Here we present a compilation of H i column density (N HI ) measures for 140 GRBs in the range 1.6 < z < 6.7. Although the sample is heterogeneous, in terms of spectral resolution and signal-to-noise ratio, fits to the Ly α absorption line provide robust constraints on N HI , even for spectra of insufficient quality for other purposes. Thus we establish an escape fraction at the Lyman limit of (f esc ) ≈ 0.005, with a 98 per cent confidence upper limit of (f esc ) ≈ 0.015. This analysis suggests that stars provide a small contribution to the ionizing radiation budget at z < 5. At higher redshifts firm conclusions are limited by the small size of the GRB sample (7/140), but any decline in average H i column density seems to be modest. We also find no significant correlation of N HI with galaxy UV luminosity or host stellar mass. We discuss in some detail potential biases and argue that, while not negligible, systematic errors in f esc are unlikely to be more than a factor ~2 in either direction, and so would not affect the primary conclusions. Our observations with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillitmeter Array, Australia Telescope Compact Array, and upgraded Giant Metre-wave Radio Telescope were obtained by our low frequency observing campaign and range from ∼1 to ∼140 d after the burst and the optical observations were done with three optical telescopes spanning up to ∼25 d after the burst. Long-term radio/mm observations reveal the complex nature of the afterglow, which does not follow the spectral and temporal closure relations expected from the standard afterglow model. We find that the microphysical parameters of the external forward shock, representing the share of shock-created energy in the non-thermal electron population and magnetic field, are evolving with time. The inferred kinetic energy in the blast-wave depends strongly on the assumed ambient medium density profile, with a constant density medium demanding almost an order of magnitude higher energy than in the prompt emission, while a stellar wind-driven medium requires approximately the same amount energy as in prompt emission. © 2021 The Author(s)., We thank the staff of the GMRT that made these observations possible. The recently discovered rapid transient GN-z11-flash has been suggested to be the prompt-emission ultraviolet (UV) flash associated with a gamma-ray burst (GRB) serendipitously exploding in the ultra-high-z galaxy GN-z11. We here place the flash into the context of the early UV emission of GRBs, and find it is in agreement with the luminosity distribution of these events.

We present GTC-10.4m spectroscopy and multi-band photometry of the faint (r ~26) optical counterpart of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61. The 5000 - 9000 Angs spectrum -- the first obtained for a magnetar -- is featureless, allowing us to set an equivalent width upper limit EW < 25 Angs to the presence of emission lines in the Halfa region. Multi-band photometry in the g, r, i, z SDSS bands obtained at different epochs over 12 years shows no significant variability from minutes-to-years time scales. The photometry has been calibrated, for the first time, against the SDSS itself, resulting in solid upper limits to variability ranging from ~0.2 mag in i (over 12 years) to 0.05 mag in z (over 1.5 years). The shape of the optical + near-infrared (literature values) spectral energy distribution is not well constrained due to the high extinction along the line of sight. Using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis we find that it can be described by a power-law with a spectral index beta=-0.7+-0.5 and E_(B-V)=1.5+-0.4. This article covers ten years of GRB follow-ups by the Spanish BOOTES stations: 71 follow-ups providing 23 detections. Follow-ups by BOOTES-1B from 2005 to 2008 were given in a previous article and are here reviewed and updated, and additional detection data points are included as the former article merely stated their existence. Quantum yields and radical chain lengths have been investigated in photocatalyzed radical nucleophilic perfluorobutyl group substitution reactions of 2-mercaptothiolate anion under three different photocatalytic systemsoperating in reductive and quenching manners. Important propagation chain lengths have been uncovered with photocatalysts under both scenarios, reductive and oxidative. The different overall quantum yields and chain lengths observed demonstrate the balance between the efficiency of the photoinitiation events, propagation and termination steps. Theoretical calculations provide a better understanding and throw light into whether a closed or an open catalytic cycle is operating in photoinitiated perfluoroalkyl group- thiolate coupling reaction. Astronomical spectrographs play an important role in addressing some of the biggest challenges in modern astronomy. One of the most critical components of any spectrograph is its dispersing element, since it determines the resolution and dispersion of the spectrograph, and is typically one of the least efficient optical components of the instrument. The aim of this workshop was to bring together researchers and engineers involved in the design, development and construction of spectroscopic instrumentation, with companies and institutes that produce dispersing elements and associated optical components. The forum provided the opportunity to discuss the scientific needs of future instruments, and to address the technological challenges that will allow the development of new types of dispersing elements in the coming years., Published in The Messenger vol. 172, pp. 40-41, June 2018.

The SUperluminous Supernova Host galaxIES survey aims to provide strong new constraints on the progenitors of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) by understanding the relationship to their host galaxies. We present the photometric properties of 53 H-poor and 16 H-rich SLSN host galaxies out to z ~ 4. We model their spectral energy distributions to derive physical properties, which we compare with other galaxy populations. At low redshift, H-poor SLSNe are preferentially found in very blue, low-mass galaxies with high average specific star formation rates. As redshift increases, the host population follows the general evolution of star-forming galaxies towards more luminous galaxies. After accounting for secular evolution, we find evidence for differential evolution in galaxy mass, but not in the B band and the farultraviolet luminosity (3σ confidence). Most remarkable is the scarcity of hosts with stellar masses above 10M for both classes of SLSNe. In case of H-poor SLSNe, we attribute this to a stifled production efficiency above ~0.4 solar metallicity. However, we argue that, in addition to lowmetallicity, a short-lived stellar population is also required to regulate the SLSN production. H-rich SLSNe are found in a very diverse population of star-forming galaxies. Still, the scarcity of massive hosts suggests a stifled production efficiency above ~0.8 solar metallicity. The large dispersion of the H-rich SLSNe host properties is in stark contrast to those of gamma-ray burst, regular core-collapse SN, and H-poor SLSNe host galaxies. HiPERCAM is a quintuple-beam imager that saw first light on the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope (WHT) in October 2017 and on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) in February 2018. The instrument uses re- imaging optics and 4 dichroic beamsplitters to record ugriz (300-1000 nm) images simultaneously on its five CCD cameras. The detectors in HiPERCAM are frame-transfer devices cooled thermo-electrically to 90°C, thereby allowing both long-exposure, deep imaging of faint targets, as well as high-speed (over 1000 windowed frames per second) imaging of rapidly varying targets. OCTOCAM is the new large Gemini instrument in building. It is an imaging spectrograph with 8 cameras covering the range 370 nm to 2350 nm at a typical resolution of 3000-4000. It will have 2 IFUs, one for normal operation over all wavelengths, the other for AO in the NIR only and with a smaller field but a higher spectral resolution. Currently, no IFU exists that covers the entire range of VIS and NIR in a single observation. Such an IFU would have a number of applications: It can be used for resolved studies of HII regions over a broad wavelength range and emission line galaxies over a broad redshift range using the same set of emission lines. Another application is to observe transients with only arcseconds localization very early without waiting for a sub-arcsecond position, hence allowing to obtain very valuable early data. For bright transients such as SNe and GRBs we can study the immediate environment in detail, and even use the actual transient as AO tip-tilt star to study the environment at high spectral and very high angular resolutions. The IFUs will be Advanced Image Slicers, a proven concept now in use in many instruments around the world including Gemini NIFS, VLT MUSE and KMOS, and JWST NIRSpec. The normal operation slicer will have a field of 9.7> x 6.8> with 17 slices 0.4> wide giving 0.18> x 0.4> spaxels. The slices are smaller than the standard slit size of 0.54> (3 pixels) so will deliver higher spectral resolution. This IFU will deliver much higher performances than the GMOS IFU and NIFS with a larger field of view and spectral range but also considerably fewer pixels per arsec2 then reducing the readout noise. With its wavelength range starting at 370 nm, diamond machining cannot be used. A glass slicer system will have to be used as in MUSE. The wavelength range will however be much larger covering the whole VIS and NIR range. Modern reflection coatings as UV enhanced silver can be used but a trade-off may be better by starting at a longer wavelength to get higher transmission. Special consideration is necessary for the fore-optics which cannot be diamond machined and for the overall design due to the limited space envelope. The AO slicer will have a field of 2.5> x 3.6> with 31 slices 0.08> wide imaged on 2 pixels in the spectral direction to get proper sampling. The fore-optics will magnify the beam in both directions but with different magnifications to get spaxels of 0.08> x 0.08>. The smaller slice image width will give a spectral resolution of about 5000 including aberrations, about the same than NIFS but covering all 4 NIR bands at once. This slicer uses a slit 60% longer than OCTOCAM is designed for. It is possible because the magnification reduces the beam size so the aberrations and vignetting. ©2018 SPIE.

Perfluoroalkylation reactions of arenes have not been the subject of intense study as has been the case for the trifluoromethylation reactions of aromatics. However, the new synthetic methods proposed for achieving homolytic aromatic substitution reactions with perfluoroalkyl moieties have begun to claim a relevant role in functionalization reactions, as revealed by the interesting properties of arenes with large perfluoroalkyl chains. Methods for achieving Ar–Rf bonding reactions can be classified into thermal and photochemical, which can in turn make use of transition metals or be non-metal catalyzed. Reactions are mainly radical in nature. Radical methods for introducing Rf moieties into arenes have resulted as being the most popular and versatile options available to synthetic chemists. We reveal multiple components of an interacting galaxy system at $z\approx3.35$ through a detailed analysis of the exquisite high-resolution Keck/HIRES spectrum of the afterglow of a gamma-ray burst (GRB). Through Voigt-profile fitting of absorption lines from the Lyman-series, we constrain the neutral hydrogen column density to $N_{\mathrm{HI}} \leq 10^{18.35}$ cm$^{-2}$ for the densest of four distinct systems at the host redshift of GRB~080810, among the lowest $N_{\mathrm{HI}}$ ever observed in a GRB host, despite the line of sight passing within a projected 5 kpc of the galaxy centres. By detailed analysis of the corresponding metal absorption lines, we derive chemical, ionic and kinematic properties of the individual absorbing systems, and thus build a picture of the host as a whole. Striking differences between the systems imply that the line of sight passes through several phases of gas: the star-forming regions of the GRB host; enriched material in the form of a galactic outflow; the hot and ionised halo of a second, interacting galaxy falling towards the host at a line-of-sight velocity of 700 km s$^{-1}$; and a cool, metal-poor cloud which may represent one of the best candidates yet for the inflow of metal-poor gas from the intergalactic medium., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures. Binary neutron-star mergers (BNSMs) are among the most readily detectable gravitational-wave (GW) sources with LIGO. They are also thought to produce short $\gamma$-ray bursts (SGRBs), and kilonovae that are powered by r-process nuclei. Detecting these phenomena simultaneously would provide an unprecedented view of the physics during and after the merger of two compact objects. Such a Rosetta Stone event was detected by LIGO/Virgo on 17 August 2017 at a distance of $\sim 44$ Mpc. We monitored the position of the BNSM with ALMA at 338.5 GHz and GMRT at 1.4 GHz, from 1.4 to 44 days after the merger. Our observations rule out any afterglow more luminous than $3\times 10^{26}~{\rm erg\,s}^{-1}\,{\rm Hz}^{-1}$ in these bands, probing $>$2--4 dex fainter than previous SGRB limits. We match these limits, in conjunction with public data announcing the appearance of X-ray and radio emission in the weeks after the GW event, to templates of off-axis afterglows. Our broadband modeling suggests that GW170817 was accompanied by a SGRB and that the GRB jet, powered by $E_{\rm AG,\,iso}\sim10^{50}$~erg, had a half-opening angle of $\sim20^\circ$, and was misaligned by $\sim41^\circ$ from our line of sight. The data are also consistent with a more collimated jet: $E_{\rm AG,\,iso}\sim10^{51}$~erg, $\theta_{1/2,\,\rm jet}\sim5^\circ$, $\theta_{\rm obs}\sim17^\circ$. This is the most conclusive detection of an off-axis GRB afterglow and the first associated with a BNSM-GW event to date. Tanvir, N.R. et. al., We report the discovery and monitoring of the near-infrared counterpart (AT2017gfo) of a binary neutron-star merger event detected as a gravitational wave source by Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO)/Virgo (GW170817) and as a short gamma-ray burst by Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) and Integral SPI-ACS (GRB 170817A). The evolution of the transient light is consistent with predictions for the behavior of a >kilonova/macronova> powered by the radioactive decay of massive neutron-rich nuclides created via r-process nucleosynthesis in the neutron-star ejecta. In particular, evidence for this scenario is found from broad features seen in Hubble Space Telescope infrared spectroscopy, similar to those predicted for lanthanide-dominated ejecta, and the much slower evolution in the near-infrared k-band compared to the optical. This indicates that the late-time light is dominated by high-opacity lanthanide-rich ejecta, suggesting nucleosynthesis to the third r-process peak (atomic masses A ≈ 195).
