The capillary barrier effect (CBE) is employed in a large number of geotechnical applications to decrease deep percolation or increase slope stability. However, the micro-scale behaviour of CBE is rarely investigated, and thus hampers the scientific design of capillary barrier systems. This study uses microfluidics to explore the micro-scale behaviour of CBE. Capillarity-driven water flow processes from fine to coarse porous media with different pore topologies and sizes were performed and analysed. The experimental results demonstrate that the basic physics of CBE is the preferential water movement into the fine porous media due to the larger capillarity. The effects of CBE on water flow processes can be identified as delaying the occurrence of breakthrough into the coarse porous media and increasing the water storage of the fine porous media. The CBE can impede the increase of the normalised length and decrease the normalised width of the water front, suggesting that the two normalised parameters are potential indicators to assess the performance of CBE at the micro scale. CBE can be formed in square and honeycomb networks with the ratio of coarse to fine pore throat width larger than 2·0 when gravity is neglected, and its performance can be affected by pore topology and size.

For more than six decades, the European Union (EU) has promoted, one way or the other, systematic European territorial integration, understood as the process of reducing many kinds of cross-border barriers. This article debates the role of the EU b-solutions initiative in facilitating cross-border commuting in Europe via its contribution to a body of knowledge, which, in its practical application, has the potential to act as a resource to be drawn on in the mitigation of a wide range of legal-administrative barriers. A theoretical framework for relating cross-border commuting and cross-border barriers is set out, and existing cases from the b-solutions initiative are mapped against it. The authors demonstrate the framework’s value as a tool for determining the relevance of cross-border obstacles and solution factors for the issue of cross-border commuting. The paper concludes that the EU b-solutions contributed with concrete policy actions as well as a body of knowledge and solution-orientated planning towards reducing a range of legal-administrative cross-border barriers in Europe, and therefore represents a set of lebenswelt interventions contributing to the potential for increasing cross-border commuting flows. info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion

The Intraseasonal Oscillation (ISO) is the cornerstone for 2–8-week subseasonal prediction. Understanding the decadal variation of the ISO is important for improving subseasonal prediction; however, there is still a gap in our knowledge of ISO dynamics. Here, we presented a method, an Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis of 11-year-sliding ISO evolution, to objectively detect decadal variation of the ISO originated from the equatorial Indian Ocean (EIO) during 1979–2016. The results show that the properties of ISO have a notable decadal change since 1998 for both boreal summer and boreal winter seasons, mainly in its evolution rather than in its intensity at origin. During the pre-1998 epoch, the boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (BSISO), was confined to the Indian Ocean; since 1998, however, it propagated northeastward across the Maritime Continent (MC) and the intraseasonal variability over the western North Pacific was significant enhanced. On the other hand, the boreal-winter ISO, usually known as Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) shows minor changes in MC ‘barrier effect’ between the two epochs, and continuously propagates eastward across the MC. The MJO only shows suppressed activity over the central equatorial Pacific in the post-1998 epoch. These decadal changes are related to the eastern Pacific cooling during the ‘global warming hiatus’ period rather than to the four-decade global warming. Results here provide a set of potential precursors for foreseeing ISO propagation under different mean states.

The existence of a business phenomenon between companies in the modern herbal medicine industry related to the difference between switching barriers, brand trust, and customer retention. The purpose of this research was to examine the difference in the relationship between variables to this phenomenon. This study used a purposive sampling method with a total sample of 130 millennials in Surakarta who consumed herbal sachets at least in the last 3 months. The research method used in this study is a quantitative method using SEM analysis tools AMOS version 21.0. This study indicates that the switching barrier affects customer retention significantly both directly and when mediated by brand trust. So in the Modern Herbal Medicine Industry, the development of customer retention is very dependent on switching barriers and brand trust.

In this study, the effect of the pressboard barrier (PB) on streamer pattern in natural ester under the non-uniform electric field is investigated by experiment and simulation. The propagation patterns and characteristics of the streamer in the oil with/without a pressboard barrier are obtained by the shadowgraph technique. The mechanism of the pressboard barrier effect on the streamer pattern and propagation is revealed using a multi-streamer branch simulation method. Results show that the positional relationship between the needle electrode and the pressboard barrier significantly affects the streamer propagation and branching. The barrier effect of the pressboard, the distribution of space electric field affected by the pressboard barrier, and the image force of charge on the pressboard surface are all critical factors for affecting the propagation and branching of the streamer. The greatest threat to the pressboard failure is the z-axis streamer or those branches close to the z-axis that is severely inhibited by other streamer branches. It raises the risk of insulation failure caused by the breakdown of the insulating pressboard.

Despite the positive contributions of several European Union (EU) policies to reduce border barriers, the EU Cross-Border Review (CBR) initiative reaffirmed their relevance and persistence. Since 2018, the EU has supported the b-solutions initiative, specifically focused on tackling legal and administrative border obstacles, aiming to highlight replicable solutions which can contribute to reducing these obstacles. This article critically assesses the b-solutions and its contribution to reducing administrative and legal border obstacles, with an eye to promoting a more integrated European territory. The barrier effect of the Maritime Continent (MC) in stalling or modifying the propagation characteristics of the MJO is widely accepted. The strong diurnal cycle of convection over the MC is believed to play a dominant role in this regard. This hypothesis is studied here, with the help of a coarse-resolution atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM). The dry dynamical core of the AGCM is coupled to the multicloud parameterization piggybacked with a dynamical bulk boundary layer model. A set of sensitivity experiments is carried out by systematically varying the strength of the MC diurnal flux to assess the impact of the diurnal convective variability on the MJO propagation. The effects of deterministic and stochastic diurnal forcings on MJO characteristics are compared. It is found that the precipitation and zonal wind variance, on the intraseasonal time scales, over the western Pacific region decreases with the increase in diurnal forcing, indicating the blocking of MC precipitation. An increase in precipitation variance over the MC associated with the weakening of precipitation variance over the west Pacific is evident in all experiments. The striking difference between deterministic and stochastic diurnal forcing experiments is that the strength needed for the deterministic case to achieve the same degree of blocking is almost double that of stochastic case. The stochastic diurnal flux over the MC seems to be more detrimental in blocking the MJO propagation. This hints at the notion that the models with inadequate representation of organized convection tend to suffer from the MC-barrier effect.

In the United States (U.S.) the annual number of commercial motor vehicle (CMV) crashes has been on an upward trajectory since 2009. In 2016, CMV crashes accounted for 11.8% of all fatal crashes in the U.S., and in Kentucky, between 2009 and 2016, the number of CMV crashes rose 27%. Of particular concern to state departments of transportation have been crossover crashes involving CMVs. These occur when a vehicle leaves its intended path and veers into the path of oncoming traffic, typically resulting in head-on or sideswipe opposite direction collisions. While some researchers have found that installing cable median barriers can mitigate crossover crashes involving CMVs, no definitive conclusions have been reached. To move toward a resolution of this question, this study leveraged analysis by a panel of experts and the development of safety performance functions and crash modification factors to gauge how cable median barriers can influence the number and severity of crossover CMV crashes on Kentucky interstate routes. Expert panelists contended that cable median barriers will improve safety, a conclusion substantiated by statistical modeling. Despite the study’s limited scope, it appears that installing cable median barriers can prevent or mitigate CMV crashes.

Intumescent coatings employ the heat barrier effect of an expanded char in the fire protection of the underlying substrates. The effectiveness of an intumescent system is dependent on the strength and ability of the char to remain intact upon exposure to fire. Many approaches have been employed to measure the strength of the intumescent char, but there still remains the need for an established standard procedure. In the present study, the compressive strengths of reinforced and unreinforced intumescent chars are evaluated using the compression test for cellular materials (ASTM 1162 00). This standard procedure enabled easy evaluation of compressive strength by employing the principle of deformation force as a function of the axial displacement of char under an active load by using the common universal tensile testing machine. The force–deformation graph revealed an exponentially increasing curve with two distinct regions, an initial region of low force to high deformation representing the collapse of the cellular pores and a high-force–low-deformation region attributed to the bulk mass effect of the compressed char. The results showed that the force needed to compress a bauxite residue-reinforced char to 10% deformation increased by 59%, while the compression strength increased by 13.08% over the control char.

Morphological variation of the skull was examined in the northern treeshrew (Tupaia belangeri) from various localities across Southeast Asia. Through a multivariate analysis, the treeshrews from South Vietnam exhibited distinct morphological characteristics compared to other populations from Thailand and Laos, and Malaysia. The plots of the specimens of North Vietnam are not randomly mixed with Thailand plots segregation in the scatteregrams of canonical discriminant analysis. Since the skulls of the population from North Vietnam were morphologically similar to those form central Laos and northern and northeastern Thailand, the zoogeographical barrier effect of Mekong River was not clearly confirmed. The population of the Kanchanaburi in western Thailand is clearly smaller in size compared to the other populations. The southern border of the distribution of this species is determined by the Isthmus of Kra or Kangar-Pattani Line. In the northern treeshrew, which is distributed from southern China to Bangladesh and southern Thailand, we have detected osteometrical geographical variation driven by geography. These results indicate that the skull morphology in the Tupaia glis-belangeri complex distinctively differs in South Vietnam, western Thailand, and southern Thailand. The zoogeographical barrier and factor separating these districts are expected to clarify in the future.

The paper deals with a neural network to model the flow stress of the AlMg6 alloy at temperatures ranging between 300 and 500 C and strain rates from 1 to 25 s−1. In this temperature–strain-rate range, the movement of free dislocations is blocked and dynamic relaxation processes are inhibited. The results of training the neural network and its verification at a temperature not used in the training show that neural networks with a single hidden layer can correctly approximate and predict the rheological behavior of the AlMg6 alloy for the studied temperature–strain-rate range of deformation.

Vitreous enamels represent a class of coatings with different technological properties, mainly appreciated for the protection they guarantee to the covered substrates. This review introduces enamel coatings, describing their production technologies and presenting the main properties affecting the enamel’s durability. Firstly, this review article introduces the most important studies regarding the improvement in abrasion resistance, highlighting both successes and failures. Afterward, the work reveals an outlook about the resistance to chemicals, underlining the good resistance of enamels toward acidic chemicals and discussing the results of studies aimed to improve their performances toward alkaline solutions. This review also considers the corrosion protection property of enamels, highlighting the high barrier effect they provide against the absorption of aggressive substances toward metal substrates. Finally, new perspectives and possible future research paths are presented, being aware that this kind of coating offers both good product protection and functional integrity over time.

In January 2012, a serious accident polluted the Longjiang River with high concentrations of cadmium (Cd) and other concomitant metals and metalloids in the water. After emergency treatment (i.e., the addition of coagulants), these metals and metalloids were transferred from the water into the sediment through precipitation of the flocculent materials produced. In this study, the long-term distribution of six metals and metalloids in the sediment of the Longjiang River was investigated and their ecological risks were assessed. Approximately 1 year after the accident (i.e., late 2012), the average Cd content in the sediment of the affected sites decreased to 25.6 ± 19.5 mg/kg, which was 8 times higher than that of 3.16 ± 3.18 mg/kg in the upstream reference sites. In 2016 and 2017, the average Cd content in the sediment of the affected sites further decreased to 4.91 ± 2.23 and 6.27 ± 4.27 mg/kg, respectively. Compared with late 2012, the amounts of Zn, Pb, and Cu obviously decreased in 2016 and 2017, whereas there were no obvious differences in the As and Hg amounts during 3 years considered. Among metals and metalloids, the average contribution of Cd to the potential ecological risk index (RI) was 90%, 69%, and 70% in the affected areas in 2012, 2016, and 2017, respectively, suggesting that Cd was the most important factor affecting the ecological risk of metals in the Longjiang River. It should be noted that the average contribution of Hg to RI in the affected areas increased from 8% in 2012 to 25% and 23% in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The sequence of contribution of six elements was Cd > Hg > As>Pb > Cu ≈ Zn. A high ecological risk of metals and metalloids was found in the sediments of two reservoirs, probably owing to the barrier effect of the dam. This study will be useful for the environmental management of rivers affected by accidental pollution of metals and metalloids.

Summary A microseismic (MS) events barrier (MSEB) phenomenon was detected during infill well fracturing of the Fuling shale gas reservoir. This phenomenon was evidenced by MS monitoring results, indicating that when the infill well hydraulic fracture (HF) propagated close to the parent well stimulated region, only a main straight fracture was propagating. Also, the number of seismic events diminished abruptly, suggesting some barrier or an attenuation process for the MS. To clarify the mechanisms involved in the MSEB effect, the infill well fracture propagation is investigated. An integrated workflow is proposed to analyze complex HF propagation of an infill well after the offset parent wells have experienced fracturing and production. The workflow integrates a geological model with natural fractures, a parent well fracturing geomechanical model, a coupled flow-geomechanics production model, and an infill well fracturing geomechanical model. First, a natural fracture network is embedded in the realistic geological model. Second, a geomechanical fracturing model is developed to simulate HF of parent wells. Third, a coupled flow-geomechanics model is used to analyze stress field evolution during parent well production. Fourth, complex HF propagation for the infill well is simulated. The case model is validated with parent well production data and infill well fracturing MS monitoring results. It can be concluded from the simulation results that (1) during parent well production, the pre-existing complex fracture network is a major contributor to pore-pressure decrease; (2) stress evolution is affected by the geomechanical heterogeneity; (3) near the parent well producing fractured region, the fracture complexity of the infill well stimulation decreases sharply and that matches well with the MS monitoring results; and (4) there are two primary mechanisms that are responsible for the MSEB phenomenon—natural fracture (NF) activation during parent well fracturing and stress evolution in parent well production. The Fuling shale gas reservoir infill well fracturing case study reveals the mechanism of the MSEB effect by demonstrating the impact of parent well production on infill well fracturing. To serve the fracture-hits evaluation and to maximize the stimulated reservoir volume (SRV), the MSEB effect should be taken into consideration in infill well fracturing design.

In this study, we fabricated and characterized nanometric chitosan (Cs)/laponite (La) nanocomposite nanogels for controlled drug delivery applications. Cs and Cs/La nanocomposite nanogels were formed by ionic gelation method using tripolyphosphate. The release of honey as a model drug was monitored using a blood glucose meter. The results of dynamic light scattering and field emission scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that in the wet state, the mean particle size of nanogels were 133 nm and 118 nm for Cs nanogels and Cs/La nanocomposite nanogels, moderately reducing to 32 nm and 95 nm at dried state, respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed exfoliated morphology for nanocomposite nanogels. Although honey loading increased the size of the nanogels, it had no effect on the morphology of nanocomposite nanogels. The loading efficiency and loading capacity of encapsulation decreased in nanocomposite nanogels. The honey release profile of nanocomposite nanogels began with a burst release, and showed lower values compared to Cs nanogels during the first hour. Our results corroborated to the higher cross-linking density and barrier effect of La in nanocomposite nanogels.

Small-particle interlayers (lenticles) show some characteristic hydraulic properties and can affect the movement of unsaturated water. In this study, we developed a novel online capillary-water-absorption monitoring device and conducted three groups of comparison tests to simulate lenticle positions and thicknesses with respect to the capillary rise. The results show that the characteristic wetting front exhibits a fast rise in the early stage, a slow rise in the middle stage, and stability in the later stage. The motion of the capillary water in the lenticle is mainly transversal, with the upward curve being “flat,” and the longer is “flat,” the longer is the time needed for the water to move. The interlayer can form a capillary stagnation zone with moisture content close to saturation. The high interlayer may form a discontinuous corrugated capillary zone. Thus, when the wetting front reaches the “coarse-grain (lower)-fine-grain (upper)” interface, the “anti-capillary barrier effect” results in more moisture in the upper layer. Thus, when the wetting front of the capillary water reaches the “fine-grain (upper)-coarse-grain (lower)” interface, the “capillary barrier effect” causes the moisture content of the upper tailings to decreases sharply because of the horizontal movement of the water in the fine medium. It is clear that the presence of lenticles can retard the rise of capillary water by storing water.

This research presents a nudge-based approach to promoting honest behavior. Specifically, we introduce the moral barrier hypothesis, which posits that moral violations can be inhibited by the introduction of spatial boundaries, including ones that do not physically impede the act of transgressing. We found that, as compared to a no barrier condition, children cheated significantly less often when a barrier was strategically placed to divide the space where children were seated from a place that was associated with cheating. This effect was seen both when the barrier took a physical form and when it was purely symbolic. However, the mere presence of a barrier did not reduce cheating: if it failed to separate children from a space that was associated with cheating, children cheated as much as when there was no barrier at all. Taken together, these findings support the moral barrier hypothesis and show that even seemingly unremarkable features of children’s environments can nudge them to act honestly.

Based on the discovery of the "natural orange soil layer" in the wall foundation of the Ming Great Wall in Huangzhong County, Xining City, northwest China, this paper reveals the mechanism behind the barrier effect of this layer on the salinity deterioration through the combination of qualitative judgment and quantitative testing. Based on this mechanism, the conventional lime soil was improved by adding modified polyvinyl alcohol as the cementing agent and fly ash, thereby generating a modified cushion material. Indoor tests of freeze-thaw and temperature-humidity cycles for the modified cushion material were then conducted alongside field tests of rammed restorations in the basal sapping zone with and without the modified cushion. The test results show that the modified cushion materials have excellent durability and act as a substantial barrier to salinity deterioration. The research results provide a new approach to repairing the basal sapping of earthen sites.

Blueberry is rich in anthocyanins, but accounting for 98.2% of the total anthocyanins are in blueberry peel and difficult to release, due to the barrier effect of the cell wall, and the oxidation of polyphenol oxidase also lead to anthocyanins loss. The blanching has a desired effect on the blueberry cell wall and polyphenol oxidase. Therefore, the influences of blanching were studied. The results indicated that the total anthocyanin content of the pulp from the whole blueberry blanching was 1.3 times higher than that of the crushed pulp blanching, and the anthocyanin content obtained from the steam blanching was 0.19 mg/100 g more than the boiling water; the maximum value of 125.35 mg/100 g was reached at 2 min of steam blanching, and the polyphenol oxidase activity was reduced to less than 10%, steam blanching showed a good effect on anthocyanins extraction. Based on the optimal blanching condition, the pulp from blanched blueberries was less red and more blue than the non-blanched, due to the more of malvidin-glycosides and the addition of delphinidin-glycosides and petunidin-glycosides; the retention rate remained at 82% and the degradation rate remained around 1.09 after 40 days. This study could be proposed to apply on the blueberry pulp production for improving the anthocyanins extraction rate and stability.

This study explores possible mechanisms for the barrier effect of the Indo-Pacific Maritime Continent (MC) on MJO propagation. In particular, this study examines whether similar mechanisms can be found in both observations and CMIP5 simulations. All models simulate individual MJO events but underestimate the percentage of MJO events propagating into the MC. The simulations are grouped into the top and bottom 50% based on their capability of reproducing the MJO spectral signal. When compared with the observations, the bottom 50% of the simulations significantly underestimate the MJO strength and exaggerate the barrier effect intensity, whereas these discrepancies are not significant in the top 50% of the simulations. From the top 50% of the simulations, the MJO strength, moisture processes, and surface evaporation in the MC all play important roles in constituting the barrier effect. No such evidence is found in observations. The discrepancies may come from small observed sample size and/or misrepresentations of key physical processes in the models. A consistent result is found in the observations and simulations: Whether MJO events can cross the MC depends on the degree to which dominant precipitation over land shifts to over water in the MC as MJO convection centers approach the MC and cross it. This result emphasizes the critical role of precipitation over water in carrying convective signals of the MJO through the MC. The results suggest that diagnosing the model alone on mechanisms for the barrier effect could be misleading; further investigations using a combination of observations, global gridded data, and high-resolution models are needed.

Diffusion of the analytes across the diffusion boundary layers and subsequently through the fiber coatings determines the extraction kinetics of solid-phase microextraction in aqueous matrices. Besides, the matrix effects can distort the behaviors of the analytes transferring across the diffusion boundary layers. However, these processes were always studied via certain simplification, which often left the mass transfer through the fiber coatings unconsidered and the matrix effects partially investigated. Herein, a comprehensive study on the mass transfer processes in direct immersion solid-phase microextraction was presented. Under different agitation speeds, it was determined that the mass transfer coefficients across the diffusion boundary layers were three to six orders larger than those through the fiber coatings. However, the mass transfer across the diffusion boundary layers was generally the major rate-limiting step. In addition, the shuttle effect and the barrier effect, which were responsible for accelerating and retarding the extraction kinetics, respectively, were found to be the dominant matrix effect alternately under different agitation speeds. This study comprehensively illustrated the major rate-limiting step and the dominant matrix effects through recording the mass transfer coefficients.

Odour emissions from digestate applied on 21 October 2020 in a 2.4 ha field in the Po Valley (Casalino, 28060, Novara, Italy) were measured using dynamic olfactometry and a six-specialist odour panel, and two application techniques were compared. The measured odour emissions were 3024 and 1286 ou m−2 h−1, corresponding to the digestate application with surface spreading and direct injection, respectively. The odour dispersion for the different emission values was modeled to a distance of approx. 500 m from the center of the field and 15 m from the ground using a Lagrangian puff model (SCICHEM) in different meteorological conditions. The meteorological variables were measured at the closest station during the whole month in which the digestate application took place, mimicking a “worst-case scenario” characterized by the frequent applications along the considered period. The maximum odour concentrations within one square km area from the center of the field occurred in calm wind and stable atmospheric conditions. This study also evaluated the effect of a barrier downwind from the source. In the worst-case scenario (spreading technique with maximum emissions, no barriers), the average and maximum estimated odour concentrations were 3.2 and 18.9 ou m−3, respectively. The calculated probabilities of exceeding the threshold value of 1 ou m−3 were 36% and 47% for the whole period and the episodes of calm winds, respectively, and 14% on average for the episode of maximum wind gust. In the best emission scenario (direct injection), the average and maximum odour concentrations were 1.5 and 8.6 ou m−3, respectively, while the probabilities of exceeding 1 ou m−3 were 26% and 36% for the whole period and the episodes of calm winds, respectively, and 0.016% for the maximum wind gust episode. In the presence of a solid barrier downwind from the source and for the wind gust episode, the peak values of the concentrations and exceedance probabilities at the sampling height were found to be reduced by a factor close to 2.5 and 5 × 105, respectively. The study also evaluated the concentration field’s vertical distribution, showing that the odour plume’s vertical and horizontal dispersion slightly increased with the barrier. This is not a cause of concern unless the emitted substances causing odour nuisance are also atmospheric pollutants with potential harm to far-field ecosystems and human settlements at low concentration levels.

Based on an actual excavation of a metro station in Tianjin, China, a fluid–solid coupling numerical model was developed to study the characteristics of groundwater flow and strata movement induced by dewatering and excavation considering the barrier effect of pre-existing adjacent underground structures. Two parameters were selected for the model: the distance between the excavation and the existing underground structure (D), and the buried depth of the adjacent structure (H). By comparing the distribution of groundwater drawdown and deformation modes of the retaining structure and the strata under different working conditions, the influence mechanism of adjacent structures on the movement of groundwater and strata was revealed. The results show that the pile foundations have different effects on the groundwater flow and excavation deformation. Generally, the maximum groundwater drawdown could be enlarged by considering the adjacent underground structure, while the retaining structure deflection would be reduced and the ground settlement could be either enlarged or reduced. Additionally, as D decreases and H increases, a much greater groundwater drawdown and a much smaller retaining structure deflection would appear, which together affect the ground behavior. On the one hand, greater groundwater drawdown would lead to greater ground settlement by soil consolidation, while on the other hand, a smaller retaining structure deflection would lead to smaller ground settlement. Thus, a complex development of ground settlement would appear, and a specific analysis should be performed to assess this in practice, based on a specific H and D.

Historically, public policies in Brazil and many developing countries have prioritized individual motorized modes of transport. The urban space of Brazilian cities has been repeatedly remodeled, often to meet the demands of vehicle flow, to the detriment of spaces for pedestrian use. Part of the transport infrastructure, particularly the highways, are obstacles to the population’s mobility, constituting the barrier effect and expanding the physical separation of the communities that reside or transit between the adjacent neighborhoods. Based on the proposed mobility and accessibility indicators extracted from the Origin and Destination Survey databases, this article aims to analyze pedestrian mobility and access to cross the Celso Mello Azevedo Ring Road, located in Belo Horizonte/Brazil. The results indicate that, over the period analyzed, the flows of foot crossings were significantly reduced, even in areas where population growth was recorded. The evidence also shows the prevalence of crossings by motorized modes, whose mobility and access are characterized by a tangible inequality in spatial distribution, linked to the occupation pattern of the surroundings, one consequence of which is the expressive volume of accidents involving pedestrians on the highway.

Landscape effects might impede or increase spore dispersal and disease risk for crops, as trees and hedges buffer winds and can behave as spore traps, therefore limiting diffusion of fungi, or, on the contrary, behave as disease relay once vegetation is infected and become inoculum sources. In this study, we investigated weekly prevalence of the pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides on guava tree leaves, differentiating impacts of leaf height on tree, age, and location within leaf. We first estimated differences in prevalence for each covariate, and then related infection rates to weather effects during the year. Our results highlighted a great variance of prevalence among individual trees, and a lower contamination of tree tops, as well as a tendency for greater odds of infection in tips of young leaves compared to older ones. Last, we show evidence that individual tree contaminations are associated with different disease dynamics: early and dispersal-based, late and growth-based, as well as with intermediate dynamic ranges. Pathogen infection dynamics will thus be greatly impacted by cover characteristics at local scale, and tree cover should not be perceived as homogeneously driving disease levels.

Being the heart of every human settlement, the road network constitutes a significant component of the built environment that serves the accessibility and mobility needs and supports economic activities. Despite its positive role, the road network, in some cases, due to increased geometric and functional characteristics, can act as a barrier to the movement of vulnerable road users, thus fragmenting the urban space and creating the phenomenon of the “barrier effect”. The barrier effect is considered detrimental to the mobility of vulnerable users, causing delays or even cancellation of trips, increasing collision risk, limiting access to services, posing negative impacts on public health, and loosening social ties. In this context, the current paper focuses on a settlement in Greece (Dispilio) developed along two national roads and comprehensively evaluates the barrier effect. More specifically, the presented methodological approach attempts to investigate the actual and the perceived dimension of this phenomenon by applying well-established metrics and landscape indicators, such as the effective mesh size, and conducting a questionnaire survey, respectively. The overall research results highlighted interesting findings regarding the intensity of the barrier effect in the examined area and outlined some critical interventions that could be implemented in similar cases.

This paper aims to study the emptying barrier effect on the dangers caused by hydrocarbon liquids. For this work, the case study was a storage tank filled with benzene and the effect was studied by combination of event tree method ALOHA software and static analysis of SOLIDWORKS software. As a result, an increase in the safety ratio was observed with the event tree method. ALOHA modeling showed a decrease in the danger zones with each emptying rate. Finally, the static study showed that the danger applied to the tank decreased. This study presents the importance of the drain barrier in hydrocarbon plants on several levels: safety, environmental and goods (tank).

The influence of mountain ranges on broad-front bird migration has been investigated for several decades. However, almost all the studies have focused on flight behaviour, and have rarely considered the quantitative effect of mountain ranges as a barrier. The present study investigates the spatial and temporal pattern of autumnal bird migration across the eastern part of the Alpine Arc (Austria). Migration intensity was recorded continuously using two dedicated bird radar systems during a full autumn migration season. One radar was located to the north in the Alpine Foreland region for the whole observation period, serving as a reference for the number of birds approaching the Alps. The second radar was moved between four locations across the Alps, operating for 21–26 days at each site. Our findings clearly show that topography significantly influences the spatial distribution of bird migration. Most birds flew lower than the main ridges, with only a small proportion detected above such altitudes (~ 3000 m above sea level). The daily pattern of migration was similar across sites, and there was no accumulation of birds (“Zugstau”) in front of the Eastern Alps. At only one of the inner-Alpine sites did the day-to-day pattern of migration intensities differ considerably from the pattern in the foreland of the Alps. This may be influenced by the wind conditions, causing birds to enter valleys of different geographic orientation. At a large scale, we did not find any evidence of a major barrier effect. In contrast to the south-west oriented central part of the Alpine Arc, where birds concentrate along the mountain ranges, the flux of autumnal bird migration appears to flow over and through the nearly perpendicularly oriented (with respect to their migratory direction) Eastern Alps. This demonstrates how the influence of mountain ranges as barriers depends on their spatial context.

Graphene-based materials are being developed for a variety of wearable technologies to provide advanced functions that include sensing; temperature regulation; chemical, mechanical, or radiative protection; or energy storage. We hypothesized that graphene films may also offer an additional unanticipated function: mosquito bite protection for light, fiber-based fabrics. Here, we investigate the fundamental interactions between graphene-based films and the globally important mosquito species, Aedes aegypti, through a combination of live mosquito experiments, needle penetration force measurements, and mathematical modeling of mechanical puncture phenomena. The results show that graphene or graphene oxide nanosheet films in the dry state are highly effective at suppressing mosquito biting behavior on live human skin. Surprisingly, behavioral assays indicate that the primary mechanism is not mechanical puncture resistance, but rather interference with host chemosensing. This interference is proposed to be a molecular barrier effect that prevents Aedes from detecting skin-associated molecular attractants trapped beneath the graphene films and thus prevents the initiation of biting behavior. The molecular barrier effect can be circumvented by placing water or human sweat as molecular attractants on the top (external) film surface. In this scenario, pristine graphene films continue to protect through puncture resistance—a mechanical barrier effect—while graphene oxide films absorb the water and convert to mechanically soft hydrogels that become nonprotective.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of char on the flame retardancy of fabrics by a cone calorimeter, which is an important factor to compare the flame retardancy of different fabrics. Design/methodology/approach Cone calorimeter measurements were carried out in a Fire Testing Technology (UK) apparatus at the heat fluxes of 50 and 75 kW/m2. Fabrics with one and three layers were employed, with the name of cotton1, cotton3, FR cotton1, FR cotton3, PMIA1 and PMIA3. The dimension of the fabric was 100×100 mm2. A cross-steel grid was used to prevent the fabrics from curling during burning. The distance between the bottom of the cone heater and the top of the sample was 25 mm. The simulated Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) events in 27 general circulation models (GCMs) are identified using an MJO tracking method. The results suggest that the occurrence frequencies of simulated MJO events can represent a model’s ability to simulate several characteristics of the MJO to a certain extent during boreal winter, such as propagation range, strength, and termination longitude. All tracked MJO events are classified into those that propagate through the Maritime Continent (MC) (MJO-C) and those that do not (MJO-B), and the weakening and blocking effects on MJO propagation by the MC in GCMs were quantified. In general, if a GCM shows a stronger weakening effect on MJO strength over the MC, it tends to produce a stronger blocking effect on MJO propagation over the MC during boreal winter. The barrier effect of the MC on MJO propagation is exaggerated in most GCMs, while it can be underestimated in some GCMs, especially the coupled GCMs. Strong lower-tropospheric premoistening is identified ahead of the MJO convection center when it is over the central MC for MJO-C but not for MJO-B in most GCMs. Such strong premoistening is mainly attributed to the zonal gradient of lower-tropospheric easterly anomalies within the front Walker cell, which could be a precursor leading to the eastward propagation of MJO convection. In contrast to the observation, the role of the background sea surface temperature and land–sea precipitation contrast in the barrier effect on MJO propagation by the MC is not well captured by most GCMs.

Many people live, work and spend time during their commute in near-road environments (pollutant concentrationsusually remain high. We investigated the influence of roadside green infrastructure (GI) on concentrations ofparticulate matter≤10 μm (PM10), ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5), ≤1 μm (PM1), black carbon (BC) and particle number concentrations (PNC) under three GI configurations – (i) hedges only, (ii) trees only, and (iii) a mix of trees and hedges/shrubs – separately in close (2 m) road conditions. These configurations gave us a total of six different real-world scenarios for evaluation. The changes in concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, PM1, BC and PNC at all six sites were estimated by comparing simultaneous measurements behind and in front of GI (or adjacent clear area). A portable battery-operated experimental set-up was designed for measuring the pollutant concentrations for 30 full days over a field campaign period of three months. On each day, around 10 h of continuous data were recorded simultaneously behind and in front of GI/adjacent clear area, capturing both morning and evening traffic peaks. Our objectives were to: (i) assess the effectiveness of different types of GI in reducing various pollutants; (ii) evaluate the impact of wind directions and density of vegetation on reducing different pollutant concentrations behind GI; (iii) investigate the changes in fractional composition of sub-micron (PM1), fine (PM2.5) and coarse (PM2.5-10) particles; and (iv) quantify the elemental composition of collected particles before and after the GI. In away-road conditions, all three configurations showed reductions behind the GI for all pollutants. The ‘hedges only’ configuration showed higher pollutant reductions than the other two configurations, with maximum reductions of up to 63% shown for BC. In close-road conditions, the results were mixed. The ‘trees only’ configuration reported increases in most of the pollutant concentrations, whereas the combination of trees and hedges resulted in reduced pollutant concentrations behind the GI. Among all pollutants, the highest relative changes in concentration were observed for BC (up to 63%) and lowest for PM2.5(14%). Categorising the data based on wind directions showed the highest reduction during along-road wind conditions (i.e., parallel to the road). This was expected due to the sweeping of emissions by the wind and the wake of road vehicles whilst the barrier effect of GI enhanced this cleansing, limiting lateral diffusion of the pollutants. However, cross-road winds that took vehicular emissions to pass through the GI allowed us to assess their influence, showing up to 52, 15, 17, 31 and 30% reduction for BC, PM10, PM2.5, PM1and PNC, respectively. The largest reductions were consistently noted for the mixed ‘trees and hedges’ configuration in close-road conditions and the ‘hedge only’ configuration in away-road conditions. The assessment of various fractions of PM showed that ‘hedges only’ and a combination of trees and hedges lowered fine particles behind GI. The SEM-EDS analysis indicated the dominance of natural particles (50%) and a reduction in vehicle-related particles (i.e., iron and its oxides, Ba, Cr, Mn) behind GI when compared with the in-front/adjacent clear area. The evidence contributed by this work enhances our understanding of air quality modifications under the influence of different GI configurations, for multiple pollutants. In turn, this will support the formulation of appropriate guidelines for GI design, to reduce the air pollution exposure of those living, working or travelling near busy roads.

A literature study was carried out with respect to the release and accumulation of formaldehyde indoors. With reference to representative emission data, exposure scenarios were calculated on the basis of the European Reference Room with the aid of Monte-Carlo methods. Furthermore, data concerning formaldehyde concentrations in indoor and outdoor air, as well as data on air exchange, were collected for the European region. Various permanent, intermitting and temporary emission sources were compared under the specified conditions of the Reference Room. It was thereby necessary to bear in mind that, for example, the emission tests for raw wood-based materials and mineral wool do not take place under realistic conditions, as these products are not applied open in indoor areas. It is demonstrated that coatings and coverings drastically reduce the release of formaldehyde into the room air. Moreover, it becomes clear that the Reference Room concept allows a comparison of emission sources but also greatly overestimates the formaldehyde concentrations in indoor areas when diverse sources are simply added together. In view of the discussed aspects, as well as taking into account outdoor air conditions and diverse secondary sources, the potential problem of exposure to high formaldehyde concentrations in indoor areas can therefore not be solved through the further tightening of already existing regulations, in particular because peak concentrations and therefore high exposures would remain largely uninfluenced. Due to the fact that formaldehyde is a compound with a threshold effect, this aspect is of considerable importance. Consequently, an appropriate risk management option would be to primarily address the peak concentrations originating from temporary and intermitting sources.

Globally, the aggregate length of roads exceeds 64 million km and 90.7% of protected areas are disturbed by road penetration, and therefore understanding how road networks impact species and ecosystem processes is highly relevant to applied conservation ecology. Among various effects on wildlife, roads may disrupt the interaction between plants and their animal-mediated seed dispersers, compromising forest regeneration and composition. Here, using the acorn-rodent system, we quantified to what extent rodent functions on seed dispersal are modified by roads over two years (i.e. 2013 and 2014). Road had negative effects on seed-dispersal services provided by rodents, with an approximate 30% reduction of seed dispersal effectiveness (SDE) and 50% reductions of dispersal distance in proximity to the road. These detrimental effects gradually declined along a gradient from the roadside towards forest interior. Declines of rodent abundance in proximity to the road seem to induce these depressed seed dispersal functions. Although the influential magnitudes of roads on SDE were similar in both years, its influential magnitudes on seed dispersal were stronger in 2014 which indicates the more negative impacts of road encroachment on seed dispersal services. Crucially, no tagged seeds were dispersed across the road, implying that it imposed a barrier effect on animal-mediated seed dispersal and plant recruitment. Given wildlife’s key roles in plant recruitment, we conclude that the ever-expanding effect of roads on animal-mediated seed dispersal may ultimately cause profound changes in forest composition and structure across diverse ecosystems, on a global scale.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a highly promising bio-based polymer that can replace petroleum-based materials. The PLA-modified membrane has been found to effectively block soil odours in laboratory experiments, but its barrier effect at the excavated soil interfaces of actual pesticide sites requires further evaluation. This study investigates the barrier effect of the PLA-modified membrane on odours at the excavated soil interface of a pesticide-contaminated site in Guangdong Province, China. The membrane’s barrier effect on odours was comprehensively evaluated using the static chamber technique with three indicators: diffusion flux, odour concentration, and a health risk index. The results showed that the initial diffusion fluxes of six main odour substances: m- and p-xylene, o-xylene, toluene, ethylbenzene, n-propylbenzene, and cumene were 1.95 × 100, 2.88 × 10−1, 7.27 × 10−3, 1.49 × 100, 2.97 × 10−3, and 3.89 × 10−3 mg/(m2·s) based on the contribution rate. After laying the PLA-modified membrane, the flux reduction rate of all six odour substances was generally >90%. The weak interlayer, as a problematic geological body during tunnel construction, greatly influences the propagation of the blasting stress wave, the blasting excavation qualities, and the explosion efficiency. A series of numerical models were established to study the changes in the propagation process of blasting stress waves and the failure morphology of the surrounding rock mass, aiming to reveal the weak interlayer’s influence mechanism. The result indicates that the weak interlayer’s existence reduces the propagation velocity and stress peak of the stress wave at barred zones but strengthens the peak stress at reflection zones, which leads to an asymmetrical distribution of rock damage. Furthermore, the type and distribution of the weak interlayer were classified and generalized into four types. The tunnel blasting outlines under different types of weak interlayers are derived through numerical modeling for designing references. A strategy to resist tunnel overbreak and underbreak was proposed combined with previous work. The actual blasting solution is compared to the designed blasting solution with optimised blasting parameters.

Nanomedicine is a rapidly advancing field as capabilities in nanoscale materials, devices, and sensing grow. Biocompatible nanoparticles have made their way into the pharmaceutical and biomedical market in imaging, diagnosis, targeted drug delivery, and even repair. Similarly, protein therapeutics show promise for their unique combination of high biospecificity and diverse function. This brief perspective explores the merging of these two fields via light-controlled methods mediated by photon-upconverting nanoparticles. The framework of three photoactive protein therapeutic systems will be explored for their integration with upconverting nanoparticles.

Context Habitat specialists residing in human-modified landscapes are likely to be more vulnerable to disturbance because of a functional reliance on very particular habitat features. However, there have been few studies designed to specifically address that issue. Objectives This study aimed to explore how the red panda, an iconic endangered habitat specialist, behaves when faced with disturbances and habitat fragmentation. In particular, we attempted to examine the effect of anthropogenic disturbances and fragmentation on home-range size, activity patterns, and recursion. Methods Using GPS telemetry we monitored 10 red pandas and documented disturbances using camera trapping for one year in eastern Nepal. We performed spatial analysis, analysed activity patterns and evaluated the effect of habitat fragmentation and disturbances on home-range size and residence time using Linear Mixed Models. Results Home-range size increased in areas with low availability of forest cover whilst home ranges were smaller in areas with a high road density. Red pandas spent more time in large habitat patches away from roads and cattle stations. Crossing rates suggested that roads acted as a barrier for movement across their habitat. Red pandas also partitioned their activity to minimize interactions with disturbances. Conclusions Red pandas seem to make a trade-off to co-exist in human-dominated landscapes which may have adverse long-term effects on their survival. This indicates that current patterns of habitat fragmentation and forest exploitation may be adversely affecting red panda conservation efforts and that landscape-scale effects should be considered when planning conservation actions. Corrosion is a worldwide problem causing the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars every year. Throughout this chapter, many topics regarding materials, procedures, synthetic routes, and mechanisms of waterborne polyurethane and their composites for corrosion protection are explored. Waterborne polyurethane-based coatings are an extremely versatile group of polymers that can be designed virtually to target any property, for example, thermal, mechanical, abrasion, and, most importantly, corrosion protection in different environments such as against air, moisture, seawater, chemicals, and UV radiation. The preparation of highly stable dispersions along with effective barrier effect for the coatings that include proper packing, high crosslink density, and strong adhesion to substrates are the key factors to develop an effective coating. In this chapter, the most relevant waterborne polyurethane-based composites mentioned in the current literature are discussed in detail to provide a full understanding of how anti-corrosive coatings work and how their properties can be further improved.

In the era of economic globalization and cultural diversity, cultural differences are everywhere, and the most important difference between different cultures is the difference of values, and the most important conflict between different cultures is the conflict of values. Cultural differences have a direct impact on our middle school English teaching. This paper introduces the basic connotation of Hofstede's cultural dimension theory, analyzes the current situation and existing problems of western cultural education in China, and puts forward effective ways and methods to improve western cultural education. Hofstede's cultural dimension theory is used to analyze the differences of cultural values between target countries and to reduce and avoid the barrier effect caused by cultural differences, which can provide reference for the current Western cultural education in China.

Using the observational data and the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) models to show the influence of the North Pacific Victoria mode (VM) on the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) are examined in this analysis. The results show that the February–April (FMA) VM had a significant influence on the development and propagation of the MJO over the equatorial central–western Pacific (ECWP) during spring (March–May) between 1979 and 2017. Specifically, MJO development was favored more by positive VM events than negative VM events. One probably description for these complicated connections is that the SST gradient anomalies associated with positive VM events enhance the convergence of low-level over the ECWP, which, combined with the warm SST anomalies (SSTAs) in the equatorial central Pacific that lead to a boost in the Kelvin wave anomalies, results in the enhanced MJO activity over the ECWP. These conclusions indicate that the VM is an important factor in MJO diversity.

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a progressive bladder disease characterized by increased urothelial permeability, inflammation of the bladder with abdominal pain. While there is no consensus on the etiology of the disease, it was believed that restoring the barrier between urinary solutes and (GAG) urothelium would interrupt the progression of this disease. Currently, several treatment options include intravesical delivery of hyaluronic acid (HA) and/or chondroitin sulfate solutions, through a catheter to restore the urothelial barrier, but have shown limited success in preclinical, clinical trials. Herein we report for the first time successful engineering and characterization of biphasic system developed by combining cross‐linked hyaluronic acid and naïve HA solution to decrease inflammation and permeability in an in vitro model of interstitial cystitis. The cross‐linking of HA was performed by 4‐arm‐polyethyeleneamine chemistry. The HA formulations were tested for their viscoelastic properties and the effects on cell metabolism, inflammatory markers, and permeability. Our study demonstrates the therapeutic effects of different ratios of the biphasic system and reports their ability to increase the barrier effect by decreasing the permeability and alteration of cell metabolism with respect to relative controls. Restoring the barrier by using biphasic system of HA therapy may be a promising approach to IC.

The ocular surface flora perform an important role in the defense mechanisms of the ocular surface system. Its regulation of the immunological activity and the barrier effect against pathogen invasion are remarkable. Composition of the flora differs according to the methods of investigation, because the microbiome, composed of the genetic material of bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and eukaryotes on the ocular surface, differs from the microbiota, which are the community of microorganisms that colonize the ocular surface. The observed composition of the ocular surface flora depends on harvesting and examining methods, whether with traditional culture or with more refined genetic analysis based on rRNA and DNA sequencing. Environment, diet, sex, and age influence the microbial flora composition, thus complicating the analysis of the baseline status. Moreover, potentially pathogenic organisms can affect its composition, as do various disorders, including chronic inflammation, and therapies applied to the ocular surface. A better understanding of the composition and function of microbial communities at the ocular surface could bring new insights and clarify the epidemiology and pathology of ocular surface dynamics in health and disease. The purpose of this review is to provide an up-to-date overview of knowledge about this topic.

Aim: The aim of the article is to present the obstacles which constitute the so-called “barrier effect” while exploring the area of urban search and rescue operations on the first day after an earthquake. It also includes preliminary results of research conducted under the implementation project “EASeR”, aimed at developing procedures and outlines for fire-fighters from Italy, helping them minimise the “barrier effect”. They may also prove useful for other countries. Introduction: In the introduction, the authors outline the circumstances of the establishing of the INSARAG International Search and Rescue Advisory Group at the UN and its European counterpart with a broader spectrum of responsibilities (the EU Civil Protection Mechanism), along with the legal basis for the organisation, as well as recall the international guidelines defining standards and methodologies for the Search and Rescue Groups (GPR). The mechanism is responsible not only for USAR but also for almost 20 types of different civil protection assets. The authors also recall the whole cycle of the GPR mission, along with examples of natural disasters and circumstances that have led to the launching of the EASeR project. Finally, the assumptions of the project and its partners are presented. Methodology: The initial research material related to the subject matter in question included international UN and EU normative documents establishing the organisational and operational standards for the conduction of actions, and the operation of search and rescue groups (USAR), as well as exemplary EU implementation projects. The identification of the initial “obstacles limiting the conduction of initial assessments (ASR 1–3) at the scene of action, defined by Italian fire-fighters from Pisa as a “barrier effect”, was the starting point for a wider analysis of the facts, and the development of a questionnaire and international surveys, using a diagnostic survey in over a dozen countries around the world. Conclusions: The quantitative data and opinions on the main obstacles encountered during the disaster reconnaissance allowed the project experts to confirm or reject the pre-assumptions for the projected content of the final project documents, and during further meetings, it was possible to develop the final versions of operational procedures indexes for emergency services in Italy, as well as the index of guidelines for international USAR in the field of reconnaissance in the initial phase (the so-called ASR 1–3). After the consultation of the final project documents (procedures and guidelines), as a result of the collected opinions and further expert work, the second phase of the project was to take place.

Biodegradable Zn alloys containing Fe suffer from a common problem that FeZn13 second phase particles are coarse. This problem roots thermodynamically from the negligible solid solubility of Fe in Zn and priority of FeZn13 solidification over Zn. In this paper, bottom circulating water-cooled casting method is successfully developed to significantly refine FeZn13 particles in Zn-0.3Fe alloy, owing to its cooling speed about 8 times of that of conventional casting. The second phase refinement alleviates brittleness of the alloy, increases the ultimate tensile strength by about 62%, and decreases electrochemical corrosion rate (CR) by about 19%, but immersion CR by only about 4% due to barrier effect of corrosion products. Viability of human umbilical vein endothelial cells maintains at a high level over 95% in 25–100% extracts. A great potential is shown for improving comprehensive properties of biodegradable Zn alloys without changing its chemical compositions through such a physical method.

A pseudo-3D coupled model with fault using coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-damage (THMD) modeling processes is established by the framework of TOUGHREACT-FLAC3D. Four scenarios are proposed to evaluate the effect of deviatoric stress, injection temperature, and fracture spacing on conducting damage, inducing the fault slip, and changing the permeability evolution. Results indicates the larger initial deviatoric stress, the larger the area of ​​reservoir damage, the larger the area of ​​fault damage, the earlier the occurrence of fault damage, and the faster the damage passes through the fault and connects with the withdrawal well. It is found that the normal stress release and strength weakening are the dominated reasons of destabilizing the fault and demonstrated the ultimate slip resistance strength of fault is close to 23 MPa. Research on injection temperature has found that the main reasons for the damage evolution of reservoirs are the varying sensitivity of fluid viscosity to temperature and the variation of deviatoric stress. Both damage evolution and deviatoric stress influence the variation of fault slip distance. Similarly, we also investigate the effect of fracture spacing on damage evolution, which shows that the decreasing fracture spacing induces the increase of reservoir permeability which obviously decreases the barrier effect of the fault and widens the damage front surface after passing through the fault.
